Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

am a fan of festivals and, in fact, any event that provides our visitors (and locals) with fun distractions and activities. It’s a big part of what makes Cape May the most liveable year-round resort on the east coast. (Yes, it’s official, according to me.) I had a great time on the Congress Hall lawn on Sunday, hanging out with my family from Scotland, listening to great music from the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey and Little Country, sipping Manhattans and taking in the vibe of the hotel’s annual Labor Day Music Festival. The previous day, I took the family to Wilbraham Park for the West Cape May Tomato Festival. My mum had a good time poking around for antiques and other bric-abrac. But she, and everyone else in my family, wondered why it was called a tomato festival. Earlier, my brother had wandered into town and told me there was a “car boot sale” going on in the park. That’s the British phrase for what we call a yard sale. I had to convince him that there was, in fact, a tomato festival going on. “Didn’t see any tomatoes,” was his

answer. And it’s hard to argue. There’s not a great deal of difference between the festivals in Wilbraham Park, whether it be held to celebrate the tomato, the lima bean or the strawberry. Okay, there is definitely more fuss made over the lima bean, but that festival is still full of the same random stalls that look like they’re packed with the contents of someone’s attic. It’s easy to stand on the sidelines and criticize when we should, first and foremost, be thanking the unpaid volunteers who organize these festivals. So... thank you for these

community-spirited efforts. But I think the people who man the stalls need to make an effort and that there should be some thought given to replacing them with folks who might want to breathe some fresh air into these festivals, if such people are around. At the tomato festival, it was only the food vendors who were offering any themed goods, with the always-notable exception of Flying Fish Studio, whose owner Sue Lotozo and her staff always go out of their way to create super-cute T-shirts and apparel that celebrate the lima bean, the tomato and the strawberry. I would be surprised if they’re breaking even, so kudos to them for making the effort. I’m sorry, but selling utterly random artifacts, with a couple paper tomatoes taped to your table, or a couple Campbell’s soup cans sitting there (seriously), is NOT celebrating the spirit of the festival. The organizers of these events deserve better. Speaking of festivals, the Dragon Boat Race and Festival, slated for September 9, has been canceled due to a lack of teams. Let’s hope this fun event is on the 2018 calendar.

Dish Of The Week Wings are needed to fly. And if you’re an Eagles fan you SHOULD know that you need wings to fly towards “the road to victory.” Sadly the road has ended short for our beloved birds. But there’s always this season! So this Sunday, stumble into the C-View Inn and tackle their famous buffalo wings. Maybe eating wings will give them wings. It’s a strange idea, but aren’t most sports superstitions a little weird? Choose between mild, hot, suicide, teryaki, honey hot and BBQ served with celery and blue cheese. And for those fantasy footballer’s out there, the C-View also has the NFL package. It’s a wing-win for everyone!

Although it’s football season, it’s still too warm outside to suggest a hot toddy or Irish coffee you’d normally drink to dethaw your bones as you cheer for your favorite team (ahem, the Birds). And we all know that football and beer go together like Tom Brady and Bill Belichick (boo). But this is the cocktail of the week, not the beer of the week. So with that being said, since it’s also hurricane season (go Miami!), how about bellying up to the Rusty Nail bar for both college and pro games this weekend and ordering up a dark and stormy made with muddled limes, ginger beer and Gosling’s dark rum. Just pray the only wind you’ll feel is the cool ocean breeze.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do so adore a good game of football. Who among you wouldn’t appreciate the sight of 500 burly topless men coated in pig fat running around chasing a 30lb football made from the polished skull of a rival chief, wrapped in leather? Wait, what? This is 2017? I was lost in the mists of time, there, and thought it was 1817, when Cape May’s founding mothers (the D’Catur matriarchs have always been a rule of law in this town, and woe betide any man who thought to cross them. I remember that boor, Colonel Sawyer, daring to suggest that Great Grandma D’Catur’s claim that she had invented the percussion cap pistol was possibly not true: she felled him with a single punch to the temple and then kicked seven bells out of him) invented the game of football. In those days it was a rougher game. Also, faster, as the pig fat the laddies were smeared with tended to attract wasps, buzzards, the occasional wolf, or that nest of cannibals who took up residence over in Wildwood, and so any player soft enough to

take a “time out” was swiftly consumed. I think that the aim was purely to get the ball from one side of town to the other, something I’d seen in that rambunctious Scotch island, Orkney, through any means necessary. Mostly those means were brute force, and the application of fist to jaw, but other, more sly techniques have won the day: once, Ernie Hemingway (an out of towner but an honorary member) mailed the ball, and so the match was forced to run for a whole week whilst the legendary local postman, Wally “Blind Wally” Blind attempted to deliver it

CAPE ISLAND BIKES

Rental

to “the other side’s goal line”. In the end he did, and though Wally was trampled to death on the goal line, the point stood and we won. How we laughed! Kicking was allowed, of course, and I was actually a specialist kicker, called in when a member of the opposing team needed belted with a boot with especially great force and accuracy. Did you know we used to export eunuchs to the courts of the world? I forget why that came to mind, but there you go… So anyways, we had thought the same would have taken hold nationwide, but for some reason, a one-to-three percent maiming/death rate for platers (slightly higher for spectators) was deemed too harsh for our less robust fellow citizens, and so we had to amend the rules a little to allow 100lbs of foam padding and those weird inventions “helmets” to be worn. Well, I lost interest at that stage, obviously: what kind of sport is it that you do not return home with your enemy’s blood on your shoes? And maybe a skull to be polished and mounted above the fireplace?

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, pursue the perfect

ecently, I accompanied a friend to visit her godmother in a nursing home in Ithaca, New York. When I mentioned Cape May, a man at the next table piped up, “Miss Dorothy’s chicken was the best fried chicken I ever ate in my life.” He referred, of course, to the signature dish of the late Dorothy Burton, who once ruled the Magnolia Room restaurant’s kitchen at the Chalfonte. This man had searched in vain for a chicken dinner to rival the one he ate in Cape May 30 years and 300 miles ago. Everything tastes better in Cape May. Whether it’s the ocean air, the extra exercise, or the sense of relaxation that comes with leaving the “real world” behind, your tastebuds work better here. Excellent chefs and bartenders help, too. Visitors swear that their favorite foods just aren’t the same back home in Delaware, or Pennsylvania, or in Ithaca, so when they get to town, they order their favorite dish at different restaurants, in pursuit of the perfect version of the thing they won’t order

anywhere else. My nieces, mothers with young children, loved the Bloody Mary at the old Pier House. This summer, disappointed to learn that the Pier House was no more, they scoured the town looking for a replacement. They set off power walking to a different place every day — the Mad Batter, Harry’s, Elaine’s. They didn’t find a match, but they also didn’t find a bad one, because, “Bloody Mary tastes better in Cape May.” It’s no use trying to tell them that the perfection might be tied to the magic of sharing a long talk with the sister who lives far away, or the

luxury of lunch without the kids, and it’s no use telling them to try a different cocktail. My husband thinks he has found perfection in a Quincy’s Original Lobster Roll, but he’ll order one at Fin’s or the Rusty Nail, just to be sure. My father sits outside at the Harbor View and orders a crab cake sandwich for lunch as soon as he gets to town. Later, he’ll order a crab cake for dinner, too. When my mostly vegetarian brother-in-law comes to town, we’ll be going to the Lobster House, and we will all order lobster. After all, as he points out, it’s not called the Flounder House. My brothers laughed the first time I made them stand in line at Hot Dog Tommy’s, but now we go every visit, because they like to be reminded what a perfect hot dog tastes like. Then they’ll get one from a beach cart, or Stewart’s, just to compare. They probably won’t have another hot dog until they come back to Cape May next year, but they’ll have three or four while they’re here. Each one will be perfect.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My best friend likes this girl. He was trying to get up the nerve to ask her out all summer. There is a dance coming up at school and he is planning to ask her out when he sees her again. He has an elaborate plan about sitting with her at lunchtime. Anyway, last night she called me up and asked ME to the dance. I had to tell her that my friend liked her and was planning on asking her to it but she said she likes me. So, I said, “Okay. I’ll go.” Yes, I like her too, but now what do I do? Do I let her tell him she doesn’t like him or do I tell him? What a mess. — Dancing with the Star Dear Dancing The Answer Lady thinks it must have been quite a boost to the ego to find out you were the object of her affection and not your

Wise answers to perplexing questions

friend. What to do? Call the young lady back and tell her you need to tell your friend first before making the date final. Tell her the truth — that you like her but you can’t do that to a friend, at least not without a heads=up. She will protest that she was not even aware of your friend’s interest, which is a fair point. But before anything else proceeds, you need to ask your friend out for a burger. Go to Bella Vida and tell him what has transpired. It’s a touchy thing and he may not take it well, but you will at least be doing the right thing.

Dear Answer Lady My son is computer junkie. He is 15 and I think it’s time for him to start looking at girls — real girls. It’s time for him to start getting involved in school activities now that school is back in session. And it is definitely time for him to put that smartphone away and start making eye contact. We made great progress this summer, but I fear he will regress. What can I do to convince him that human contact beats virtual reality any day? — Worried Dad Dear Worried Human contact takes nerve, at least initially. The anonymity of the computer is very seductive. A regular family night out is the ticket. Depending on his and your skill level, try miniature golf at Sunset Beach Mini Golf. Think about joining the Cape May Tennis Club or Cape May National Golf Club. If neither of you is athletically inclined - birding is another option. As to girls — that will resolve itself.

The Movie Column

K

“The Big Sick” reviewed by Tom Sims and Mike Chamberlain

umail Nanjiani, a stand-up comic, is gaining a lot of momentum as an actor. Born in Pakistan, Nanjiani is making a name for himself on a variety of television shows, and now he is starring as the lead in an autobiographical film, The Big Sick. Mike and Tom offer up their review here. Tom: When you roll drama into a comedy, one or the other is sometimes lost. If it’s the drama, the story still has a chance, but there’s no hope if the comedy is lost. This film not only finds that balance, it makes it work consistently beginning to end. This film is from the producer of Bridesmaids (2011) and Trainwreck (2015), both well received… so it had a fighting chance. Nanjiani is a credible lead who shares the screen graciously while still commanding presence. Zoe Kazan is completely irresistible as his girlfriend, Emily. She has been a favorite since starring with partner, another fave, Paul Dano, in the 2012 fantasy/comedy Ruby Sparks. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter are so genuine as Kazan’s par-

The Big Sick hits the spot ents you almost forget you’re watching Hollywood royalty. His parents are masterfully played by Anupam Kher (dad) and Zenobia Shroff (mom). The whole supporting staff creates an unsurpassed ensemble. Mike: Let me start by saying I’m not the biggest fan of romantic comedies, and the ones that I do like tend to lean towards the unconventional. I would much rather watch The Princess Bride (1987) over Pretty Woman (1990) or High Fidelity (2000) over Sleepless In Seattle (1993). That is exactly why I enjoyed The Big Sick so much.

The movie starts out as a typical romantic comedy with the usual “meetcute” (thank you Roger Ebert for that term) between Kumail and Emily. Then the story comes to the inevitable second act “relationship snag” and break-up fairly early. After that, the “big sick” of the title comes into play essentially taking Emily out of the picture for almost the entire second half of the movie. From that point on Emily’s parents (Romano and Hunter) enter and turn the movie into much more of an uncomfortable comedy. This tonal change really works well thanks to the great performances from not only Hunter and Romano but mostly from Nanjiani who does a stellar job playing both the lead and awkward third wheel at the same time. Nanjiani also wrote a screenplay with his real-life wife Emily V. Gordon (based on their experience). There is never a false note in the whole film, it is utterly charming from beginning to end. It takes a lot to melt this cynic’s heart and The Big Sick did just that.

Bird Droppings

Y

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

our peaceful, vegetated back yards have been infiltrated by a host of migrating birds, mostly warblers and vireos. These small escape artists are masters at concealment. Despite the colorful patterns found on many, when a warbler lands they burrow themselves into the foliage and defy you to find them. They herald from the boreal forests of Canada and the northern US and are heading for Central America and the West Indies, with Cape May a stopover. This morning I watched two American redstarts burrow into a forsythia in our back yard and disappear. It’s a neat trick, honed by evolution and time. Redstarts are one of the most active and flamboyant of the tribe. Fitted with bright red or yellow (females) panels in their tails, these hyperactive insect eaters dance through the undergrowth, attempting to startle hidden insect prey into flight. Once flushed, the warbler sallies out and snaps up the prey with an audible snap of the bill. The black-and-white warbler has a different technique. Able to clamber up tree

trunks in the manner of a nuthatch, it uses its nut-pick-like bill to glean insects tucked into nooks and crannies. Both black-and white and American redstart are common migrants and I can virtually guarantee that your yard will host one or more almost daily. If not, visit the Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. Even in the heat of midafternoon, when everywhere else seems quiet, the Northwood Center still buzzes with bird activity. If it’s too hot to sit outdoors, go into the Center.

Enjoy the air conditioning and watch birds from windows snugged right up against the vegetation. If the mister is on, the fine spray of water attracts birds who “leaf bathe,” the avian equivalent of sponge bathing. Another good warbler destination is the beanery. Flanked by wet woodlands, access to this celebrated migrant trap requires a current binocular decal, which comes free with a Cape May Bird Observatory Membership. The Hawk Watch at Cape May Point State Park, sponsored by Swarovski Optik, is free thanks to the benevolence of New Jersey Forest and Parks and Swarovski’s sponsorship. Operating daily, dawn to dusk, the hawk watch is North America’s premier hawk watching destination. Bad news for migrating warblers but good news for Cape May residents and visitors who care to witness this seasonal Grand Canyon worthy spectacle. As for Monarch butterflies, Cape May’s other celebrated migrant, this fall looks like a good one. It all depends upon the timing of a cold front whose northwest winds ferry the gossamer-winged insects down the coast.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

ATLANTIS has a sparkly and energetic personality. She is a stocky 55 pounds at the young age of 3 years. Atlantis has learned to walk nicely on leash wearing her gentle leader harness. Although she loves long walks, she enjoys running in the yard as well. Atlantis would be a wonderful addition to any family. Adopt today!

MAGGIE & MARGARET are eight year old litter mates that lived in a loving home together until they were dropped off at the shelter because their family was moving and could no longer care for them. Yes, they want to be adopted together! The girls could not be more affectionate toward everyone they meet. Stop in and adopt this dynamic duo!

WALL E is a terrific family pet. When his owner passed away, he was brought to the shelter. We have learned that WallE loves running and playing fetch. He happily retrieves balls to continue play for a long time. He likes squeaky toys and stuffed animals as well. He is calm in the house and very well mannered. Don’t wait, adopt!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

CLEO is a domestic gray and white longhaired kitty who loves to be held and calls out with little squeaks when shes seeking a cuddle. Cleo also enjoys back rubs and will reach out for more if you stop! She may be a bit shy at first, but given enough love and time, Cleo would be the best girl that anyone could ask for. Adopt Cleo today!

OTIS is the puuurrfect kitty if you are looking for the bestest friend ever! He would love nothing more than to play, run around and have a good ole’ time. When anyone walks past, he meows, reaches his paw out and throws his toy mice around the cage. Come by the shelter and let Otis impress you. He will make any family very happy!

LEONARD is looking for an older companion such as him. Someone who likes long talks and is affectionate. Needs to be able to pet for hours while Leonard sleeps in your lap. Being an older fellow, his thyroid is a bit on the fritz. Very manageable with some cheap pills. Don’t let that deter you. Leonard’s love will more than make up for that!
