Ramblings From The Editor
B
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
etween a barrage of hurricanes walloping the Caribbean and the escalating threat of nuclear war with North Korea, it’s been a banner of a week. On a smaller, personal scale, my family, who were in Cape May for a three-week visit, left this week for my native Scotland, which always leaves me a little down. Terry’Oke at Rio Station, where we had a rollicking time last Friday night, won’t be the same without the musical stylings of my Shania Twainloving sister-in-law. Or without the rapping of Rusty Nail bartender/Exit Zero employee Katie Repici, who went (almost) beer for beer with the Scottish set, until she had enough liquid courage to channel Eminem — twice. Add to the mix a string of dreary weather, and you could say I’m in the Cape May doldrums. And — also the case when my family leaves town — a little hungover. But if you, too, ind yourself in need of some cheering up, take heart. I was happy to hear about the success of a feelgood event that took place in Cape May last Saturday. The Foster 100 — a 100-mile bike from Philadelphia to Cape May
— is the capstone fundraiser of Team Foster, a nonproit organization which pairs service dogs with wounded veterans in honor of Army Captain Erick Foster of Wexford, Pennsylvania, who was killed in Iraq in 2007 at the age of 29. Last year, when we hosted an after-party for the group, 50 riders rolled into Cape May to a soundtrack of ‘Eye of the Tiger.’ This year, twice as many riders completed the journey, meaning Team Foster is gaining the kind of traction you love to see for a group like this. Following a 7am start (and 20 flat tires),
the riders — divided into six teams based on ability — landed at the ferry terminal between 1pm and 4pm, where they enjoyed food catered by the ferry, chair massages from Ann Wenger Whipple of Accent on Beauty, donated beer by Dogish Head Brewery, and a beautiful sunset. That night and on Sunday, many of the riders and their support team, comprising 75 volunteers, recovered on the island’s beaches and in our downtown. When all was said and done, they’d raised $25,000, making Team Foster’s 2017 total more than $52,000, all the more wonderful when you learn it can take upwards of $20,000 to sponsor a single service dog, and the VA provides no support. “So much of our time is spent on our differences, or arguing different points of view,” Nick Liermann, Team Foster founder, told me. “Saturday was a reminder that there are still a lot of things we agree on.” Congrats to all involved. And if you’d like to learn more or make a donation, visit TeamFoster.org, or follow them on Facebook. As Eminem would say, “You can do anything you set your mind to, man.”

Dish Of The Week If you’re looking for a spot to spend your pennies, we think it would be WISE (see what we did there?) to mosey on up to the Iron Pier for their delicious Lollipop Wings. We aren’t clowning around, they are THAT good. No joke! And on the plus side, because the meat is cleaned from the bottom of the bone, there is no mess. And you only need to eat with one hand. Which allows the other hand free to pick up your drink, high five, juggle, call your friend who is sadly missing out... you get the point. Although they have classic buffalo, we recommend trying something different and going with the siracha honey. The sweet and spicy combo will knock your socks off!

A true beauty from the Russian River this chard boasts beautiful bouquets of bright fruit balanced with just the right amount of oak aging. A tremendous value.
A carny, also spelled carnie, is an informal term used in North America for a traveling carnival employee. Or, as the International Man of Mystery Austin Powers would say, it’s one of the two things in life that scares him — a clown. Which we are celebrating in The Clown Issue. Here in Cape May we have our own Carney. Or, should we say, Carney’s. Don’t be a bozo! Order up a Cape May Blueberry Lemonade at Cape May’s iconic beachfront bar. It’s made with Cape May blueberry rum and lemonade, garnished with lemon slice and blueberres. It won’t give you a red nose, but it might give you a fit of the giggles and the urge to clown around. And what’s wrong with that...

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, fall festivals
ummer really is ending, no matter how hard we fight it. School is back in session, the days are getting shorter, and while the ocean water may be warm, it’s getting chilly on the beach. Say hello to autumn at one of Cape May’s beer festivals. Beer is the focus of many fall celebrations for three important reasons. First, beer is a tasty adult beverage, rich in niacin and antioxidants. Second, there is the centuries-old tradition of Oktoberfest. Third, some brewers consider October 14 to be the anniversary of American craft beer. Americans had been brewing beer since colonial times, or course, but on October 14, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a bill which lifted Prohibition-era regulations on beer brewed for personal use, and made it exempt from federal tax. That change, combined with the 1972 release of a new breed of hops called Cascade made it easier to brew beer at home, and some say, kicked craft brewing into high gear. In Cape May, Oktoberfest transforms
Jackson Street and Carpenter Lane into a Bavarian Biergarten. There will be German food and music, German beer, and more than a few hardy guests sporting lederhosen, no matter the weather. American craft beer will also be available, and you can usually sample unusual harvest flavors. Waiting in line, you’ll likely make a friend or two, and share your opinions on different beers. Some people like heavy, almost chocolate-y beers as chilly weather approaches. Others prefer sours that will knock your tastebuds back a bit — this time of year, you’ll often find options with “Devil” or “Demon” in the name.
Keep an open mind — you didn’t expect to like that tomato lemonade at the West Cape May Tomato Festival, but it was refreshing, right? Festival etiquette allows you to avoid the extremes and find your favorites, so pay attention to the body language of the people in front of you as you make your selection. Raise your eyebrows in question and you’ll likely get an enthusiastic thumbs up or a discreet shake of the head to help you make a choice. Don’t be shy — you need a little human interaction before the cold weather sets in, and you just might find a new favorite beer. Oktoberfest is held Saturday, September 30 from 10-5. There is no rain date. Admission is free. Visit capemaychamber.com for more information. Other Cape May festivals include the Mutt Strut, a fundraiser for our four-legged friends, on Saturday, September 23; the West Cape May Lima Bean Festival on October 7; the Cape May Wine and Music Fest, also on October 7; and the Pumpkin Festival at Historic Cold Spring Village on October 14. Cape May Brewing Company offers tours and tastings.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I dated a man for two years who, unbeknownst to me at the time, dated other women while we were going out. I finally broke it off, but when I take my evening walks, I find myself going by his house. I see no harm in it. He lives with another woman and is rarely there. My girlfriends feel it is unhealthy and tantamount to stalking. I argue that being with him would be unhealthy and as there is no one in the house, what am I stalking? A house? Remembering the things I liked about him is comforting to me. Even though he is a serial philanderer, I still feel a great loss. I can’t help it. — Helpless Dear Helpless Your girlfriends are right. You need to get back in the saddle again and exorcise this

man from your life. By your own admission, he is not worthy of your love and loyalty and by holding onto the good and forgetting the bad, you are poised to slip back into his arms again, if he gives you any encouragement. In so doing, you are cutting yourself off from meeting someone who is true and honest with his affections. You definitely need to go to Cape May Day Spa and ask for the Perfect Escape to detox so you can open yourself to new experiences. And find another walking route.
Dear Answer Lady My husband is driving me crazy. We invited a well-heeled neighbor to our Labor Day barbecue. He RSVP’d but was a no-show. I later saw that he had sent me a text an hour before the party, apologizing for the fact that he would not be able to make it. My husband has taken it personally and has not stopped talking about it. He claims there is no excuse for “backing out at the last minute.” I don’t know what to do about it. — Dissed Dear Dissed My, my what thin skin your husband has. It sounds as though his social climbing master plan has been thwarted. The Answer Lady would tell him that. He’ll deny it, but at least you will have called him out on it. Other than reminding him that taking a pass on coming to a barbecue is not the same as dissing the Queen, you can really only distract him. Like a child. Take him to Fins for cocktails and a nice, thick, juicy hamburger and tell him to let it go. Protocol would be to invite him to one more event. If he shows, be gracious. If he doesn’t, be gracious.

The Movie Column
S
tephen King’s books have had a real hit-or-miss history when transferred from page to screen. While movies like The Shining (1980) and Stand By Me (1986) have become classics, others like Maximum Overdrive (1986) and Children Of The Corn (1984), not so much. So when the news broke that they were turning King’s book simply entitled It into a feature film, I had my doubts. I can now thankfully say this film will be on the classics list. It is fantastic. For those unfamiliar with King’s book, it’s the story of the Losers Club, seven friends who realize they need to bond together to stop the evil that is killing the children of the town of Derry. This evil takes the form of the kid’s darkest fears, most often appearing as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and he is 100% nightmare fuel. The film is directed by Andy Muschietti and scripted by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman. They manage to take King’s massive book and turn it into a movie that chills you to the bone early and
“It” reviewed by Mike Chamberlain
Bill Skarsgard is creepily excellent in It often. Just as importantly they manage to create fully fleshed out real characters that are all given their own moment to shine. The movie is set in the 1980s and has the nostalgic fun and adventure of The Goonies (1986) mixed with the surreal horror of A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984). That being said, the strength of It ultimately rises and falls on the young actors who make up the Losers Club. Jaeden Lieberher is Bill Denbrough the unofficial leader of the Losers. His little brother has
gone missing and he’s on a quest to find him. Jeremy Ray Taylor is Ben the new kid who is infatuated with the history of Derry. Sophia Lillis as Beverly is the sole girl of the group and the infatuation of Bill and Ben. Then there’s Finn Wolfhard who plays the wisecracking Ritchie, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie the germaphobe, Chosen Jacobs as Mike who lost his parents to a fire when he was a baby and Wyatt Oleff as Stanley whose father, the town rabbi, is unhappy with Stan’s progress preparing for his Bar Mitzvah. All of them are terrific. There is never a misstep or false note from any of them. Then there is Bill Skarsgard, whose Pennywise sets the bar for scary clowns. He is truly terrifying. It is a horror movie that combines a great script and a stellar cast — which is about as rare as it gets these days. Like to write? We need help reviewing live theater. Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hey call it “the hawk watch,” but the elevated platform at Cape May Point State Park is a window into the entire natural world, from flowers to ish to butterflies to all species of fowl. In half an hour last week, we went from monarch butterflies to migrating red bats to night hawks to American kestrels to the menhaden in the talons of the osprey. I’ll bet you didn’t know some bat species are migratory. Imagine how much more natural lore you’ll pick up on your trip to the platform? Dawn to dusk, seven days a week, rub elbows with local experts and visitors from all over the planet who have come speciically to witness the miracle of migration at the place known as the Migration Mainline. On Labor Day Weekend, I met a young mother, a Cape May Point homeowner new to birdwatching, who was enthralled by the parade of hawks. When her husband and kids announced they were going home for lunch, she stayed, too captivated to surrender the loaner Swarovski binoculars in
her hands. The best thing is that your hawk watch platform experience is FREE. The pond in front of the platform hosts a variety of water birds and you can count on the array of Swarovski spotting scopes to be trained on whatever is new and exciting. Speaking of which, wood storks have been sighted on multiple occasions recently. These southern water birds are very rare north of South Carolina but Cape May is a magnet for rare and unusual birds which
accounts for a county bird list in excess of 450 species, more than half the birds found in the US. Speaking of rare birds, a roseate spoonbill, another southern wading bird, is being seen regularly in the Heislerville Impoundments, Cumberland County (or Greater Cape May). This spatula-billed, pink-colored heronlike bird is most often seen roosting on the island in the north pool or feeding way back in the shallow north end of the pond, right beside the bike path. If it’s there it’s hard to miss but from the causeway you will need binoculars if it’s feeding way in the back. But if pink is not your color, there is an array of multi-colored warblers migrating through Cape May. Train those Swarovski binoculars on an adult male American redstart and the image will blow you back to a brain stem. The trees adjacent to the hawk watch platform host lots of warblers after a night of northwest winds. What’s a redstart look like? A bird dressed for Halloween.
