Ramblings From The Editor
W
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
hile hurricanes have brought devastation to Texas, Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico — and there can be no silver lining there — the storms have sent decent waves to our coast, meaning surfers have been cutting work and school to paddle out. My wife and I went to the Cove on Saturday, where she joined the ranks of surfers crowded at the jetty. It’s not Diane’s favorite break because of the rip current that pushes a surfer against the rocks, creating a constant paddle-battle. The waves here also pitch in such a way that makes for a steep and sometimes harrowing take-off, with less room for error than you might find a little further north — she prefers the slower break at Stone Harbor. But, hey, I had a pretty harrowing experience on shore, too — those bastard black flies had me swatting the morning away. But it wasn’t all hairy and scary. At one point, David LaPuma, director of Cape May Bird Observatory, paddled out to get a closer look at a white-winged scoter. Swimming on the surface of the fairly turbulent water, the duck
never got its feathers ruffled even amidst the surfing and kayaking chaos (yes, a lone sea kayaker also took to the chest-high waves this day). We were also treated to the show put on by a trio of dolphins leaping into the swells. I also got a kick out of watching Billy Scott, bartender at Nauti Distillery and Rusty Nail, carve up and down the textured face of each wave with the same ease and professionalism he uses for mixing cocktails (you’re welcome, Billy). Then there was my friend, artist Victor Grasso, longboarding in a baseball cap he only
lost once. (Okay, maybe twice.) “This is probably the best season we’ve had for waves since ’96,” said Cape May surfing legend Steve Steger, Sr, who’s been paddling out at the jetties at Headquarters, Stockton, Stegers and the Cove. “And it’s set to continue into the weekend.” Some people make surfing look so easy, it can be easy to forget the ocean is a scary place, and no one should enter the water without first knowing the conditions. Something else I’ve learned? There are rules in the lineup just as there are on the road. The person closest to the peak has the right of way, and dropping in on someone else’s ride makes you a kook. After a couple of hours, Diane and I headed to Harry’s, where we drank orange crushes on the roof deck and chatted with bartender Emir Santos, whose family hails from Puerto Rico. He is still waiting to hear about damage to his mother’s property, but from the sounds of things, it’s not looking great. You’re in our thoughts, Emir. Until next time, respect the ocean... and don’t be a kook.

Dish Of The Week If you’re into big waves and burritos, we’ve got just the spot for you. It’s called Big Wave Burritos. And it’s run by local Mickey Chew who has been known to ride some giants in his day. Just check out the pics on the walls. Order up the protein-filled breakfast burrito loaded with egg, egg and bacon or egg, bacon and steak folded into a 12’ tortilla, choice of refried or black beans, salsa, corn, cheese and sour cream. And the best part is that it’s served all day and night. So whether you’re wanting to grab and go before your dawn patrol surf sesh, or wanting some grub after a two hour sesh later in the day, this dish will leave you totally stoked.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
Blackcurrants and spice abound in this lovely jam packed red. Enjoy with beef or pork dishes or all by itself. A true gem.
As the Beach Boys famous song “Surf City” goes, “I’ve got a ’34 wagon and I call it a Woody (Surf City here we come). You know it’s not very cherry, it’s an oldie but a goodie (Surf City here we come) Well it ain’t got a back seat or a rear window, but it still gets me where I want to go”. Now although the Beach Boys weren’t surfers, except for one (Dennis Wilson), they did put out some catchy, beach-boppy surf tunes in their day. And the classic woody wagon was the ultimate surf mobile. So after a long day of catching tubes at the cove til your arms feel like noodles, celebrate with a Woody Margarita at Cabanas. It’s made with Patron Silver, Grand Marnier, lime juice and splash of sour. Surf’s up!

Harvest Ale is something of a beer/wine hybrid. Beginning its journey with a simple Saison grain bill, it’s brewed with a generous helping of Hallertau Blanc. These hops have a gentle, earthy bitterness with loads of white wine and grape-like flavors.

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some surf-appropriate products and found the answer from Southend Surf Shop on Beach Avenue. The Item: Surf wax and wetsuits. The Appeal: If you plan on shredding the gnar this fall/ winter without freezing your buttocks off, then a good wetsuit is a must! And to avoid a slippery wipe-out, pick yourself up some Sticky Bumps surf wax, too. The Price: Wetsuits vary in price due to thickness, style, etc. But wax is just a couple bucks a pop.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a night at the theater
t’s back to school time in Cape May — why not brush up on your history? See A Year in the Trenches at East Lynne Theater Company. When the United States entered The Great War 100 years ago, New Jersey played an important role. German saboteurs struck at the Black Tom depot in Jersey City, killing seven people and sending shrapnel into the Statue of Liberty. Camp Dix in Burlington County became one of the largest training camps for soldiers, and Hoboken was the point of departure for thousands of troops. When the United States formally ended its involvement in the war, President Warren G. Harding signed the declaration on a golf course in Raritan. Trentonian Needham Roberts won the French Croix de Guerre, eight New Jerseyans earned the Congressional Medal of Honor and 140,000 brave men and women from New Jersey were a part of the fight. Playwright James Rana mines history to tell the stories of real people, using diaries, letters and other documents to bring each individual to life. Grace Bunker
left her job as a telephone operator to work in communications at the front lines, translating from German to French to English. She understood the importance of the work she and other “Hello Girls” did. In the play, when she is asked to leave her post because the building is on fire, she responds, “Well, put it out! Someone has to answer these phones!” Charles Dilkes joined an engineering unit and found himself riding and shooting as the battle raged, even though he had never touched a gun or a horse before basic training. Dilkes lived to write a memoir, An Engineer’s Diary of the War. Poet Joyce Kilmer
never got the chance to write the war book he had planned. A decade older than most of his fellow soldiers, left behind a wife and five children when a sniper’s bullet claimed his life. Nurse Amabel Scharff Roberts, a Vassar alumna, died of blood poisoning in a field hospital before she was thirty. Pilot Kenneth Russell Unger, a flying ace with fourteen victories, lived to a ripe old age, and chose to serve his country again by flying transport planes in World War II. A War in the Trenches tells their stories. Period music, from spunky to somber, sets the mood. The show plays Wednesdays through Saturdays through October 14 at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street, Cape May. The play is written by James Rana, commissioned by the New Jersey Historical Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, with help from the New Jersey Theater Alliance. The play is directed by Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth. Tickets are $32, with discounts for seniors, students and military. Children 12 and under are free. Visit eastlynnetheater.org for details.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My niece, who is 15, has been hounding me for a doggie-sitting job. My golden retriever needs a strong hand so I thought I would try her out on weekends to watch him while we are home, freeing us to do some chores. For the second week in a row, she has either been a no-show or arrived two hours late. I am trying to deal with her rather than bring my sister-in-law into this but so far, my niece seems unwilling to take this seriously. Do you think I should fire her and tell her mother and keep trying to teach her to be responsible? – Anxious Aunt Dear Anxious The Answer Lady thinks you should tell her you no longer need her services and not bring her parents into it. Explain to her that
Wise answers to perplexing questions
you need someone who wants to take the job seriously. You naturally will have to stay strong if the flood of tears begins. Be sympathetic but suggest to her that perhaps she’s just not ready for the discipline of a job and you can try her again a few months down the road. Meanwhile, call the Doggie Nanny to watch your pooch and give you a wee break without anxiety. Dear Answer Lady I am worried about Halloween. I don’t like passing out candy. I live alone now that
my husband and I are divorced and the kids are out of the house. Plus, I eat more of the candy than I pass out. On the other hand, I fear hiding in the house. If they catch me, I’ll get the toilet paper treatment. Also, I’d be the only house not participating because my neighborhood is full of kids. When can I stop doing things I don’t want to do? — Trick-orTreat Dear Trick-or-Treat The answer to your question is never. That’s what most humans do — stuff they don’t want to do. As to the Trick-or-Treaters’ dilemma, the Answer Lady is not all that sympathetic because she thinks it is one of the last vestiges of the days when we welcomed strangers with open arms. Since you’re not all that welcoming and you fear you cannot control your candy intake, take yourself to Louisa’s for dinner. You might want to ask a friend (clearly not a neighbor). Take the opportunity to go to Washington Street Mall on October 22 for Trick-or-Treat from noon-2 with the Halloween Parade following. The sight might alone might change your heart.

The Theater Column
O
East Lynne Theater Company’s “A Year in the Trenches” reviewed by Dottie Knapp
ne hundred years has passed since the United States entered the first world war. After seeing A Year in the Trenches I have to ask, has anything changed? This show, running through October 14, is an original production from East Lynne Theater Company. Commissioned by the NJ Historical Commission and the NJ State Council on the Arts, this play was written by James Rana and developed with Gayle Stahlhuth. It was based on the book Remembering World War I: An Engineer’s Diary of the War by Charles Edward Dilkes and other sources. Meet young Mr. Dilkes, sincerely played by Ryan Genualdi — so proud to do his part — and a cast of other characters all of whom have New Jersey ties. Mike Newman has the job of playing a variety of characters and never forgets who as he transforms. Another outstanding performance is by Osborn Focht, who goes from priest to general in one minute — and you’ll forget you’re watching the same actor. Similarly, Matt Baxter Luceno goes from a gung-ho pilot
Don’t miss A Year in the Trenches at East Lynne to the sensitive Joyce Kilmer. As Kilmer, his scene with Focht’s priest will make you cry. Jennie Bissell and Tara Reuter give us the female perspective. Did you even know about the Hello Girls, telephone operators who left home to run communications in France? Reuter convincingly plays one such young woman, Grace Banker. All the pride she feels is evident as well as the hurt as being thought of as less than a soldier. Bissell plays the nurse Anabel Scharff Roberts, another woman willing to give up all com-
forts for the unknown of an experience that was far more than anyone bargained for. They also take on a number of rolls showing the many ways in which women contributed to the war effort. We see these women as both American and French and in both languages, they also treat us with songs of the era. I was delighted to sing along. Stahlhuth has the amazing ability to put on shows that maintain the ELTC mission to preserve history and resonate strongly with today’s audiences. This show taught me that in 100 years we may not have learned that much from our mistakes. This is Gayle Stahlhuth’s 100th anniversary show for ELTC. Over the years she has taken me from the Presbyterian Church to the Natchez Trace, down the Mississippi on a raft, in a sword fight in old California, and now in the trenches of WWI. My expert tour guide always brings me there with attention to detail and unsurpassed artistic style. I don’t just see Stahlhuth’s shows, I am happy to say I experience them. Join me for the experience!

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he question on many minds is, ‘How spectacular will this year’s monarch butterfly migration be?’ Peak flights involving hundreds of thousands of butterflies happen every several years and we’re about due. It all depends when the cold front passes. Like birds, butterflies are driven south by northwest winds. During peak flights, the dunes of Cape May and Cape May Point are festooned with gossamer-winged insects. Seaside goldenrod can be bowed to the ground under the weight of insects. Roost trees, the morning after a big flight, bloom orange at the touch of sun. Where are the roosts? One is just north of the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park. The rest are a secret. I once had some kook ask about good places to collect the insects. She used the wings in some craft project which I will not name for fear that some other kook will think “that’s a good idea.” Migrating all the way to Mexico is dangerous enough without having to contend with feeble-minded people waving nets. Of course, I exclude those net-waving
researchers who are part of the Cape May Monarch Monitoring Project. Their ongoing tagging and release program has helped unravel the mystery of monarch migration. You can learn about the program by attending tagging demonstrations at the picnic pavilion north of the hawk watch Friday, Saturday and Sunday 2:00 pm until October 15. Monarchs are not the only insects migrating but their numbers, size and orange-and-black wings command attention. I once saw a monarch migration so huge
that the sides of Sunset Boulevard were paved in butterfly wings that rose in orange waves. So give migrating monarchs a break. If the air is saturated with migrating butterflies, ease up on the gas pedal. Migrating warbler or dragonfly will also be grateful. We in Cape May have a special obligation to be mindful of the wildlife resources of places hundreds of miles away. Speaking of that, our monarchs herald from New England and Eastern Canada. The best migrations come on the heels of a dry summer and New England has been dry. The last generation to hatch is the one that forgoes breeding and uses pent-up sexual energy to get it to winter roosts in the mountains of Central Mexico. One thing you need not worry about is monarchs being predated upon by birds. Their diet on milkweed renders the insects inedible. An eastern kingbird’s first taste of monarch is also their last. Birds that get a mouthful of monarch adopt an expression that suggests that they just took a sip of kerosene.

PEANUT & GIZMO arrived together and have been together since they were puppies. Like brothers, they wrestle, run, play and share their toys. When going for walks, they stride down the street with each other. If a lap is available, they quickly pounce and curl up for petting and a nap. They would be a double blessing for any family.
PETEY lived happily in a family with kids and a cat since he was a little fellow. Sadly, his family moved to a home that does not permit dogs. Petey is very well mannered and calm in the home. He loves sitting close by and relaxing with everyone in the family. He thinks that car rides are a very special treat. He is ready for immediate adoption.
LUKE was found abandoned and tied to a tree with two other dogs. He is a spirited boy and needs time to be comfortable with new people. His cute little face begs to be taken for a walk where he steps lively down the road and curiously examines his surroundings. A quiet home and comforting lap would work best for Luke. Adopt today!
