Ramblings From The Editor
L
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ast week, I spent my third wedding anniversary having skin cancer removed at a surgery center in Voorhees. More than a year ago, my wife sent me to a dermatologist for a tiny, innocuouslooking bump she’d noticed on the inner ridge of my right ear. Diane is typically a bit of a hypochondriac, so I resisted at first. I’m from Scotland — land of beautiful mountains, Harry Potter-like castles and a lot of rain — so I never spent much time in the sun growing up. Living in Cape May, I’ve made up for lost time. When I told Diane my idea for opening Exit Zero Cookhouse two years ago, her one condition was that I make time for the beach with her every Sunday — supporting her sun-and-water-worshipping habits was written into our wedding vows. Even though I always plant myself under an umbrella (and a baseball cap) on the sand, I agreed to see a dermatologist for the first time in my life. At that appointment, a year ago, I was diagnosed with a benign cyst and sent home with some cream. One year later, with the bump unchanged, I went back to the doctor. This time, she did a
biopsy, which revealed squamous cell carcinoma, the faster growing of the two common skin carcinomas. I scheduled an appointment with a surgery center straight away and, fortunately, they were able to remove my cancer in one shot. With 3.5 million cases diagnosed per year, skin is the most common kind of cancer in the US. And while I don’t know the statistics, I’m willing to bet those who spend their summers at seaside resorts like the Cape are particularly susceptible. The city offers free cancer screen-
ings at Convention Hall every summer, but don’t wait until next July — listen to your friends/relatives/significant others, and make an appointment. On a happier note, that was a fun weekend! Jackson Street was a sea of people for Oktoberfest on Saturday. Shout out to Jeff Gernitis of Fins for going all out this year with an outdoor biergarten complete with Bavarian food, live music, games, popcorn machine and beer maids wearing traditional dirndl dresses. On Monday, over a Fins burger with all the trimmings, bartender Ken Strain told me all the prep paid off — the place was “crazy.” This being the fall in Cape May, there’s plenty more fun and inspiration to come. This Saturday, it’s the quirky Lima Bean Festival in Wilbraham Park. The Sunday of the following week, October 15, don’t miss a succession of inspiring talks at TEDx Cape May, held at Lower Cape May Regional. Included among the guest speakers is Wyclef Jean! That’s some serious celebrity right there. For ticket info, visit TEDxcapepay.com. Until next week, wear your sunscreen!

Dish Of The Week To honor the man who (supposedly) founded this great land, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight a dish that combines his Italian heritage with an American influence. It’s a classic staple that is on almost every Italian restaurant’s menu in the states, but it was NOT invented in Italy. Welcome to the chicken parm. It was invented by immigrants to the United States and Canada, possibly because meat was much more affordable than it’d been in the old country. Discover why Godmother’s is our choice. Their breaded chicken cutlet topped with marinara, mozzarella and provolone, served with spaghetti, might not be the most adventurous choice, but it tastes like an American dream.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
The Federalist Cabernet $15.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard
The folks at CMBC take their dark, slightly sweet, and full-bodied stout and condition it on locally-roasted coffee from Avalon Coffee. A complex grain bill of pilsner, carafa, caramunich, roasted barley and oats. A delightful dessert or breakfast beer.
A lavish oak component makes this fullbodied wine very aromatic — smoke, black pepper, cardamom — and also adds a spicy accent to the bold, ripe fruit flavors. The rich texture feels velvety in the mouth. The spicy oak and fruit notes echo on the finish.
If Columbus DID in fact discover America, then we can’t think of a more appropriate drink to raise to the explorer than the Americano. This classic drink, which has returned to the spotlight after fading out of popularity for decades, is composed of campari, sweet vermouth and club soda. And where should you sip on this delizioso cocktail? Well, how about the classy/ cool bar at the Washington Inn. Enjoying a drink in honor of the man who discovered the New World in a restaurant named after the first American president... how appropriate is that? And if you’re not sure whether the Americano is for you... go on and do a little bit of exploring. It’s good for the soul.

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some Christopher Columbusappropriate products and found the answer from the Spice Cellar of Cape May on Carpenters Lane. The Item: Poverty Beach Rub, Higbee Beach Rub, Captain Mey’s Jerk Seasoning, Broadway Beach Rub. The Appeal: Back in the days of Christopher Columbus, men traveled the world for spice. Luckily for us, we don’t have to travel very far. Explore the flavors of Cape May with locally named spices from an adorable little shop right down the street. The Price: $8/small. $20/ large.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
id you know Cape May was almost called Cape Columbus? Actually, it was very nearly called Cape D’Catur, which would have been the best choice by far, but that’s another story of treachery, courage, derringdo and smoked haddock. Chris Columbus was a frequent visitor here, anchoring the Santa Maria off the Point while he visited Martini Beach for a cocktail. Such was his ego that he was keen to name our fair city after himself, and took umbrage that we might in fact be considering alternatives. He was also very much at odds with Cornelius Jacobson Mey, and the two used to needle each other to the point that they exchanged blows. This all came to a head one night after one drink too many, and the two declared that a race would take place the next night, with the fastest ship to go from the Point, along past the city, around the canal and back again, being the one whose captain would name the town. The Santa Maria was, in all fairness, a fleeter vessel than the New Netherland, and
Cornelius knew it. But he was a wily old bird, and so he came up with a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel (as my old friend Blackadder used to say), and in the dead of night, aided by a small band of sneaky brothers, he coated the hull of the Santa Maria in a mix of sand, cement, and water that was, I believe, the first use of concrete in the world. The idea was to slow the ship down, but in fact the mixture hardened so fast that not only did the Santa Maria sink in minutes, but Chris Columbus went down with it, firmly set into the concrete he had been trying to
scrape off by hand when it sank. Obviously this was politically sensitive, and so he was chipped off the wreck and returned to Spain in a state of cemented rigor mortis, where he was buried with full honors in a rather heavy cask. The Santa Maria, embarrassingly, was rather well preserved and can be seen to this day at Sunset Beach, though we have come up with some rather ludicrous explanations as to an alternate history that, to our amused surprise, people seem to be happy to believe. As if anyone would build a ship from concrete! Ha! We of course hushed up the whole incident, and Met was given the right to name out city in return for keeping his big mouth shut. Of course, we changed the spelling, to teach him a lesson, and suggested gently that should he talk about the whole inglorious incident he might find himself inside the sunken Santa Maria with nice new concrete captain’s boots on, and so far, the secret is safe. Obviously I am dictating this for my secret memoirs, which shall never ever be published!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s all about the lima bean
party is only as good as its honoree, and the lima bean as guest of honor is pure gold. Powerful, useful and quirky, this little legume offers the perfect excuse the wander into the streets of West Cape May — the Lima Bean Festival on October 7. West Cape May is like the Brooklyn of the New Jersey cape, combining traditional homes and businesses with hipster services like tattoo shops, vegan eateries and art galleries. It’s the kind of place where you dress up for dinner but ride your bike to get there; where linen suits and wet suits cross paths comfortably. The lima bean helped to build the town — there were 125 lima bean farmers in Cape May County at the middle of the 20th century, growing the affordable, nutritious bean for families across America, when West Cape May lay claim to the title, “Lima Bean Capital of the World.” By the end of the century, the lima bean was no longer the pot of edible gold — or green, or purple or red or black — on the American dinner table.
Luckily, fortune seems destined to favor West Cape May. In the early days, pirates like John Batteast hid, and spent, their gold here. When Batteast, a black man, died in the late 18th century, he left behind the money to build a church for the black community in town. By the time the town was incorporated in 1884, it drew entrepreneurial Philadelphians seeking a healthy place to live. George H. Reeves, who suffered from a variety of ailments, opened a branch of the the Hastings Goldbeating Company at 102 Goldbeaten Lane. Workers melted, molded, rolled and hammered 23
carat gold into sheets of gold leaf for art, fashion and buildings. It takes one ounce of gold to make 175 square feet of gold leaf. It took 10 years as an apprentice to learn the art of goldbeating, and about a year to learn cutting and filling. According to John Hastings, many women would learn the trade in a factory while young, work piecework at home when they had young children, and return to the factory when the children grew up — just in case you though the flexible workplace was a modern idea. Today, West Cape May is home to our own Exit Zero as well as modern farmers producing wine, honey and vegetables, including more than a few lima beans. The Lima Bean Festival runs 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, October 7. The rain date is Sunday, October 8. It’s like a regular street fair with a lima bean flavor, featuring lima bean dishes and the crowning of the Lima Bean Queen and King. After you fall in love with West Cape May, make plans to return for the Christmas Parade on December 2.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been having an affair with a married man for a number of years. I left my husband when the affair began and he was supposed to do the same, but that never happened and here I am 10 years down the road. Now, he seems to be taking an interest in another woman. They text incessantly. She always seems to have a problem which only he come fix. When we are together, he always seems to be so far away. I know how this ends and it’s not good. I’m beside myself. What should I do? — Losing Him Dear Losing What you should do is get down on your knees and be thankful for this gift which has fallen into your lap and finally freed you from this prison term. What exactly are you
Wise answers to perplexing questions
accusing him of? Cheating? On whom? Have you forgotten he has a wife? You’ve wasted a decade on a man who is unworthy. The first thing to do is tell him that it is over. The second thing is take yourself to Lace Silhouettes and buy a new array of foundation garments. With these, you can go forth in the world with a new attitude. Being alone is better than being compromised. Aren’t you worthy of being more than someone’s second choice? Dear Answer Lady My daughter is 10 and we are having bat-
tles to get her to do her homework when she gets home from school rather than stay after school to play baseball, soccer or “hoops.” By that time, she’s too tired and has to get up early in the morning to do it. Her grades are beginning to slip and I’m worried. I love the fact that she is so athletic but academics are equally important. — Worried Mom Dear Mom How about this? Take control of the situation. Right now she seems to be in the driver’s seat and she is not old enough to drive. See to it that she comes home directly from school. She can do her homework and then go back. If the games begin directly after school, you might have to put your foot down and limit her activities to the weekend. Or, make sure someone is there after the game to bring her straight home. Then sit down with her and help her with the homework. Even if you can’t help, your presence will help keep her focused. Once she knows you are serious, she might come up with a solution of her own. Why not take her to the Crab House at Two Mile Landing and talk it over?

The Theater Column
C
Cape May Stage’s “Outside Mullingar” is reviewed by Veronica Scutaro
ape May Stage’s production of Outside Mullingar is a beautifully acted tale of humanity in all of its frailty and strength. The play is written by John Patrick Shanley, the screenwriter for the 1987 film Moonstruck, which won him an Oscar. The theme of misfits in a search for love and meaning comes to us in the form of a Celtic fable with all of the mystery and heart that every soft Irish rain brings to mind. The lead actors, Chris Dolman as Anthony and Annie Edgerton as Rosemary, make the viewer forget that they are watching a play. They so embrace these identities that watching this play is like peeking through the window of their farmhouses and watching each neighbor’s drama unfold. Edgerton and Dolman play two brooding and moody adult children of aging parents. Tony, Anthony’s father played by Daniel J. O’Donnell, thinks his son unable to love the land and would rob him of his inheritance to satisfy his sense of pride. Aoife, Rosemary’s mother played by Marlena Lustik, sees her
Outside Mullingar is beautifully acted daughter as a force to be reckoned with but has no hope for her daughter’s future happiness. The old people berate and belittle each other and their children. The dialog waxes philosophical (What is the sky for? Stay where you’re miserable because it’s where you are.) The audience experiences the dichotomy of real relationship. Rosemary describes her father as a perfect man who loved to hate. Anthony confesses that he doesn’t like people. Rosemany chimes right in: Who does? No one!
All four of the actors in this very special production show great strength and skill in their craft. It is so satisfying to be in an audience that gets the chance to experience this level of acting. As the story unfolds, the four players in this comedy/drama act with a deep sense of connection to their characters. The comedic moments come at just the right time to relieve the tension mounting among them. The laughter could not overshadow the pain of the families as we watched the revelation of each human’s love for others and the love of their land. Love of the land, of the dirt itself, is a pivotal theme in this play, leading all of the characters to make assumptions and formulate opinions, each about another. Anthony (Dolman) and his father Tony, played by Daniel J. O’Donnell, act the scene of Tony’s confession, redemption and passing is a scene that breaks your heart. See this play and know that every relationship is quirky, that death is hard, and that love is harder — but worth the wait.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
e must have been a sorry-looking lot, last Monday, as our troop of sodden associate naturalists trooped into Bella Vida for our traditional post-meadows walk feast. The weatherman? He had promised a rain-free morning. As had Doppler radar. Birdwatching is an activity conducted outdoors. As such it leaves practitioners subject to the whims of the weather god. I hate being wet but because of my avocational convictions, I have been wet more times than anyone on the planet who hates being wet. Because of my fondness for dryness, I own a closest filled with rain gear. But, of course, you need to be wearing it for its watershedding qualities to be realized. Anyway, morning bird walks go rain or shine. It’s why you buy waterproof binoculars. By the time we reached the beach, all leaders and participants were thinking longingly of dry car interiors. But some of my greatest birding days have been conducted in weather that would stop a professional football game. There was
one World Series of Birding that was so rainy that one participant likened it to “birding in a car wash.” Not one team quit the field. Rain actually squeezes migrating birds out of the sky, precipitating massed groundings known as “fallouts.” I guess that is what I was thinking last Monday as I led our troops through the meadows. We saw a nominal number of species but lots of merlins. These feisty falcons probably outfly raindrops and, rain or shine, merlins can be counted upon to be up and about.
The beach was simply paved with gulls. Great black-backed gulls are seagoing birds. Offshore storms send them landward. This makes black-backs the exception. Most other gulls cannot drink sea water so are bound to the land. The term “sea gull” is, for the most part, inaccurate insofar as most gull species are never out of sight of land. So there they were, about 150 massed gulls. And there we stood, trying to keep the rain drops off our ocular lenses, searching for the odd rare gull or two. Bad weather also shuffles the deck. Ma Nature sometimes deals birders a few wild cards when weather turns gnarly. Not today. But the merlins were a great consolation prize and we did get great looks at an adult lesser black-backed gull, yellow legs and all. Rain or shine, it’s an ill wind that doesn’t blow some intrepid birder some good. At least it was a warm rain as hurricane spawned weather events tend to be. But come November, layer up.
