Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
his week, I became an uncle for the tenth time — my wife’s sister Donna Cannon and her husband Ian welcomed a little girl Alloway, named for the Scottish town in which the famed poet Robert Burns was born (yes, it was my idea). I have a lot of respect for my sister-inlaw, who labored for eight hours sans drugs. My wife served as doula, a word with which I’ve only recently become acquainted, and she reported that the whole thing was as “wild as everyone says.” I’ll take her word for it — I don’t need to see the pictures that were taken. Speaking of miracles, have you been following this year’s monarch migration? While it’s too early to tell how good or poor a year it’s been for this remarkable butterfly, anecdotal evidence points to a strong showing in Cape May, an important migratory stopover on the 3,000-mile journey from Canada to Mexico. I’m sure Alloway will be very advanced for her age (just ask her father), but as with any human child, it will be years before we’ll be able to trust her not to run in front of a school bus or stick her finger in an electrical socket. These
fluttery insects, on the other hand, pop out of the cocoon equipped for an eight-to-ten-week odyssey using only the food (nectar plants) they find along the way, and some very sci-fisounding internal brain compass. On the island, you may have seen the vehicles marked with “butterfly research” that drive at a snail’s pace from Higbee Beach to the Point in order to conduct a census around this time every year. While most other drivers are considerate, I have it on good authority that some people display a lack of patience when caught
behind these cars. I get it — there are already a lot of pedestrian crosswalks and horse-drawn carriages to contend with in town, and this can be frustrating. But it’s important that we let the fine folks from Cape May’s Monarch Monitoring Project do their job tracking these little guys — their continental population is in dire straits and we depend on these butterflies to pollinate our food supply. Plus, let’s face it, they’re aesthetically pleasing — watching them flutter has become as important a hobby on the Cape as eating ice cream or taking photos on the lifeguard stand. Shout-out to all of the Cape May residents who have taken up wildlife gardening in recent years in order to provide habitat for these monarchs. In our latest color issue, reporter Bill Barlow interviewed local wildlife gardening expert Pat Sutton for a list of things you can plant to get started. But when all else fails, she says, go to a native plant nursery and ask for help, and don’t be intimidated. “You don’t need much of a green thumb to do this,” she told us. Until next time, may there be a million monarchs in your backyard.

Dish Of The Week It’s time to get your ducks in a row before it’s too late! Migrate over to The Black Duck for their honey slowroasted half duck over apple smoked bacon and sweet potato risotto topped with a red currant jus. They are also offering a $25 menu for those early birdies from 5-5:30pm. So there’s no need to go on a wild goose chase looking for a place to eat this weekend. Don’t be a quack and reserve a table today. Trust us, this place is definitely NOT for the birds. AND if you’re a lucky, you might get a view of a beautiful October sunset. A great meal with a view. It’s like killing two birds with one stone. Oh dear, it’s a pun overload... we’re sorry.
BEER OF THE WEEK
For Reservations Call: 609-884-9119 322 Washington Street Mall, Cape May • www.tishasfinedining.com •
Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
Copper and Thief Red Wine Blend $24.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard
Thanks to the tartness of the cranberries, this beer is crisp and snappy, yet fruity and zesty due to the addition of sweet orange peel. A harmonious blend of fruits and beer, it is pink in color with a tart finish, with the cranberries taking center stage.
A dark and jammy red wine blend loaded with bourbon-inspired flavors and aromas. Aged for three months in bourbon barrels, gives way to soft, velvety tannins with a subtle heat. The combined result is a rich flavor, with a long, lingering finish.
It’s looking like it’s going to be a beautiful weekend here in Cool Cape May. Which means it’s the perfect opportunity to get out of your nest and visit all your favorite spots before they close their doors for the season. And where do we recommend you belly up before they go belly down for the winter? The Schooner at the Lobster House. Order up a Grey Goose martini with olives and watch the birds fly by. And don’t worry! The Eagles game is Monday night, so there’s no excuse to stay inside. And if you didn’t already know, the NJ Audubon Cape May Autumn Festival and Bird Show is this weekend (hence the theme of this issue, you silly goose).

Why, back in the day I used to be a dazzling figure out and about in Cape May, in my cloak of peacock tailfeathers, my bird-of-paradise cap, a vest of twinkling black starling feathers and my dodo-bone shoes. I sparkled, fluttered, rustled and clinked as I walked, and people pointed and small boys ran in my wake. Of course, times change, and fashions, and I realize that it is not ideal to be clad in the remnants of 2,867 tiny creatures. I even disposed of my kitten cape (I was not so rash as to burn it, given the artistry and indeed feline loss of life in making that lush carpet of undulating fur, dotted with tiny paws and hundreds of glass kitten eyes: I donated it to Cape May’s Home for Alopecia’d Dogs, where last time I saw, a cheery homicidal pit bull/chihuahua mix was sporting it, to impressive effect) and my Albino Snow Leopard (the creature was totally black with white spots) chaps. Also, I made a bird friend, one day. I was in the D’Catur Mansion garden, stripped to the waist, glistening with sweat from my toils
(I had been shouting at our gang of Scotch laborers for three hours straight, and lashing them with my elephant-tail switch) when a beautiful blackbird landed on the peak of my cap. He leaned down and we regarded each other eyeball to eyeball. I refused to blink: one needs to keep eye contact when dealing with Irishmen, birds and certain types of bear (others, you need to pretend to be dead. Some more, still, you should run at, screaming. I forget which is which, so I tend to to all three of these things in swift rotation, to be on the safe side). After an eternity, he flew
off, leaving a tiny black drifting feather and a dollop of bird poop on my hat. From then on, we became fast friends: he used to bring me credit cards and small items of jewelry from visitors, and I used to feed him crumbs from my weekly delivery of cookies. I named him, too: Aloysius, after a favorite stuffed bear I once owned. Aloysius used to perch on my shoulder when I went for my morning constitutional, and whenever I hailed someone (“huloo!” to friends, “rot in hell!” to strangers) he would cheep in concert. Of course, Young Albert, though feigning camaraderie, was actually consumed with jealousy, and so one day, midway through Aloysius’ rousing rendition of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”, that tiny fierce dog leaped high in the air and snapped the surprised bird up in a small explosion of feathers and poop. I was about to give Albert the thrashing of his life, when I noticed that his head was bedecked with feathers, giving him an irresistibly comic look. How we laughed!

The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s all about the birds
Y
ou already know that birding is big in Cape May. You’ve heard that people travel from all over the world to check out our feathered friends. There’s even a column on birding a few pages away in this very paper. What you don’t know is what will prompt you to become a “twitcher.” Maybe you’ll be captivated by the robin who builds a nest in your yard, or the colorful visitors to your neighbor’s bird feeder. Maybe you want to know who to blame for an annoyingly early wakeup call, or your doctor suggests that you need more exercise. Or maybe, like so many birders, bingewatching David Attenborough’s Life of Birds will be your trigger. Birding can be a “cheep” hobby for beginners — wait until you’re hooked to spend big bucks on binoculars, cameras and travel. It’s a year-round hobby, so there’s no need to wait. Start by googling the sounds of common birds in your area, and begin to look by listening. Some experts teach kids to listen first, and make pretend binoculars with their hands so they can focus on the
bird without any magnification. After you get the hang of finding birds, you can use binoculars to get a better look. Follow the Cape May Bird Observatory on Twitter — @ cmbobirds — to learn what other birders are spotting on a given day. For a deep dive into birding, the Annual Cape May Fall Festival comes to town from Thursday, October 19 through Sunday, October 22. Cape May locals Pete Dunne and Kevin Karlson will talk about their new book, Birds of Prey. On Saturday, there will be a panel on international collaborations in migration monitoring. There are children’s
activities and workshops on identifying bird calls, which are different from songs. Jonathan Wood offers raptor shows on Friday at 1:00, 2:30 and 4:00; Saturday, 11:00, 1:45 and 4:00; and Sunday, 11:00, 12:30 and 2:00. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband refuses to dress appropriately when we go out to dinner or to a party. If I see that worn-out “I may be old but I saw all the cool bands” shirt on him one more time, I’ll scream. I was especially embarrassed last week at a work-related dinner. He met me there and showed up with a sport jacket covering a salmon-colored T-shirt. Black would have been cool. Salmon? He might as well have held a spotlight on himself as he came to the table. A table filled with men wearing suits, ties and ironed dress shirts. What do I do? — Fashionista Dear Fashionista There’s an old saying that, “He (in your case She) travels fastest who travels alone.” You’re not going to change him. You have
Wise answers to perplexing questions
two choices: accept it and go solo to those affairs where attire is an issue, or tweak it. The Answer Lady suggests a shopping trip to Galvanic. The reason being that they have stylish, but still casual, clothing that he just might take a liking to. Everybody wants to look good. Some just need a guiding hand. Dear Answer Lady My son is 12 and beginning to be a problem. I want to teach him discipline, responsibility and a work ethic. Every time I want him to help with chores, do an errand, teach
him carpentry and woodwork, he goes to his mother to get him out of it and she complies. I feel it is wrong on many levels, not the least of which is the strain it is putting on our marriage. Nor is it helping my son with anything except learning how to manipulate women. Got a suggestion? — Undermined Dad Dear Undermined You need to have a serious chat with your wife and get the rules of engagement straight. When that fails, implement Plan B. Put the whole discipline and responsibility thing on hold for now and plan activities that are fun, giving him no reason to wheedle out of them. The Answer Lady is big on birding and thinks the Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) offers a wonderful array of activities. If the two of you never see a bird, it will still be a wonderful experience. Kayaking is still an option. Aqua Trails near the Nature Center offers rentals. Make sure each foray includes a trip to the Ugly Mug for a hamburger and fries. Make up your mind to win this war of wills and everyone will be the better for it.

The Movie Column
H
Gayle Stahlhuth of East Lynne Theater and Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
alloween is the perfect time for a scary movie! This season, see one considered the first horror movie ever made. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) will screen Sunday, October 29, at 7:30 pm. This is part of the Silent Film Series started in 2011 by East Lynne Theater Company and Cape May Film Society. The movie is screened with live organ music, which will give you even more goosebumps. The story begins at a carnival where a sideshow operator named Caligari, played by Werner Krauss, exhibits Cesare, a Somnambulist, played by Conrad Veidt. Caligari claims Cesare has been sleeping since birth, and keeps him in a coffin. Caligari also claims that he can answer any question, including when someone will die. Directed by Robert Weine, this film is one of the first examples in cinema of German Expressionism, a visual style in which both characters and the world itself are out of joint. The set is comprised of jagged landscapes, tilted walls, and staircases
going in odd directions. It’s influence in camera angles and lighting can be seen in such later “film noirs” like The Third Man (1949). Wiene began his career in 1913 and directed 47 films, including The Hands of Orlac (1924). He fled to the United States during Hitler’s rise, and at the time of his death was working on Ultimatum (1938), with another refugee, Erich von Stroheim. Veidt, also a refugee, made 119 films includ-
ing Casablanca (1942), in which he played Major Strasser. Wayne Zimmerman has been playing organ for the Silent Film Series since its beginning. He has played in a variety of venues nationwide. At varying times he’s served as organist at the Lansdowne Theatre in Lansdowne, PA, the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA, the Brookline Theatre in Havertown, PA, and the Merlin Theatre in suburban Philadelphia. Experience this chilling movie at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes St., Cape May, NJ; call 609-884-5898 or e-mail eastlynneco@aol.com. Speaking of Halloween flicks, Mike Chamberlain recently reviewed the new movie based on the Stephen King novel It. Chris from Cape May wrote to ask why the review didn’t mention that the film is a remake of the Tim Curry adaptation, which aired on television in 1991. Mike didn’t think much of that version, but we only said to Chris, “We don’t bring up television shows in a movie column.” At that point, Chris

OLIVER is a senior boy found wandering in Woodbine. He is calm in his kennel and nestles in his bed. When it is time for a walk, Oliver ambles along like a distinguished, older gentleman and enjoys sniffing his new environment. He deserves to spend the rest of his years in a loving home where he can snuggle and go for leisurely walks.
JAX is a typical, friendly black lab mix who was surrendered to the shelter at one year of age. Max loves to play ball in the yard and is a champion at fetching and returning the ball to continue the game. He seems to have boundless energy so would do well with an active family. Stop by the shelter and adopt Jax today!
