Ramblings From The Editor

C

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ongratulations to Lower Cape May Regional High School senior Will Berger, who placed first in the Cape May County cross-country championships held last Friday at the Cape May County Park and Zoo. Although Lower didn’t claim the title — Ocean City went home with that honor — Will’s time of 15.57.26 is something to celebrate. Not only was this a personal record for the 17-year-old, it marked a record for the 3.2-mile course. In the early 2000s, my wife ran crosscountry for Middle Township High School, whose home course was at the zoo, and she still sometimes insists on heading over the bridge to Exit 11 to jog here. She tells me the drive is worth the pretty, flat and shaded trails… and that the sound of zoo creatures howling behind a runner can only motivate her to pick up the pace. I’ll have to take her word for it — I’m not much of a runner — although I have been playing soccer at Lower, thanks to the nudging of my neighbor Jim Barnes. On Sunday, I managed to strain my quad on the pitch (hey,

it’s better than breaking a leg), so to work out the muscle, I planned on taking Karen Bosna’s aqua yoga class at Cape May City Elementary School’s newly renovated pool. I’m not really sure what water yoga entails, but instructor Karen assures me it’s an alllevels course, and at $5 a pop, I have no excuse not to try. I don’t foresee breaking any water yoga records (is that a thing?), but I AM excited to check out the pool... and it will help work off the beers I indulged in the other night at Lucky Bones. Will Berger isn’t old enough to

know this yet (right?), but Cape May Brewery’s Honey Porter is the kryptonite of this old guy attempting an athletic comeback. Speaking of congratulations, shout-out to all who work at The Virginia Hotel, Congress Hall and the Sandpiper Beach Club — this week, Conde Nast Traveler released the results of its 30th annual Readers’ Choice Awards, and all three properties were rated among the 25 best in New York State and the Mid-Atlantic Region. The hotels took fourth, ninth and 17th place, respectively, thanks to the submissions of more than 300,000 readers. Pretty good incentive for an off-season staycation. All you curry lovers out there... this is the LAST WEEKEND Exit Zero Cookhouse will be open until we move across the road, which won’t be until next spring. Saturday, October 28 is our last day. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Until next time, enjoy your Halloween! And if you’re out driving on Tuesday, be extra mindful. If the turnout at Cape May’s Halloween parade last Sunday is any indication, there will be hordes of mini werewolves and princesses roaming our streets on the 31st.

Dish Of The Week Looking for one wickedly delicious cauldron of curry to spice up your Halloween weekend? Naturally, we are going to recommend Exit Zero Cookhouse. Not just because they/we offer a scarily good menu of curries — but because this is the LAST WEEKEND you can go there until the new restaurant opens next to the gas station, next spring. So what dish are we going for? Order the Green Dream, loaded with spinach, red peppers, carrots and potatoes (and chicken, if you are a meateater) then kick it up a notch by adding an extra pepper or two for a hot treat. Not a spinach lover? Go for the Mushroom Masala. It’s wicked good!

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

Angeline Reserve Paso Robles Cabernet Sale: $13.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street

The folks at CMBC take their beloved Apple Bomb and infuse it with the spices from the favorite fall classic, Mop Water. An entire batch, (60 kegs) of this spicy, apple-y treat. Sweet from the Apple Bomb, savory from the spices, and all-around deliciousness.

This beautiful fruit-forward red exhibits a wonderful balance between structure and lively concentrated black fruit. Enjoy with red meats or just by itself. Cheers!

If you’re looking for a bar that oozes Halloween, we’re pretty sure you’ve already guessed where we’re going to send you. Because unless you’re blind as a bat, then you’ve seen the large, terrifying spider sitting on Elaine’s lawn, frightening small children and arachnophobes on the daily. They even created a few spooky cocktails to add to their already impressive display. One being the Flaming Smores Martini. They add Stoli Vanil Vodka, Baileys and Creme de Cocoa into a shaker and pour into a graham cracker-crusted rim and drizzled chocolate syrup martini glass. Then, to top it off, a marshmallow coated in rum is placed on top and lit on fire. It’s devilishly delicious...

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

will not hear a bad word said about witches. To be accurate, I will not let a witch hear me say a bad word about her. This is based on common sense, stemming from the fact that my grandmother, the estimable Widow Dee Catur (the name evolved over time, into something fancier than the original) was a witch. A Witch, to use the capital letter the lady herself demanded. She was a master at the use of spoken capitals, was Granny Dee. “That is not a Full measure,” she would say to the barman at The Admiral Hotel. “That is too Small to be a Full measure. That will, if you let it persist, cause you Trouble.” And even if the whole of Cape May had not known Granny Dee was a witch, that tone would have commanded respect and trembling obedience. Of course, the whole town did know she was a Witch, and so what Granny Dee wanted, Granny Dee got. And what Granny Dee did Not want, tended to stop. Instantly. I would like to say that Granny Dee used her powers only for good: herbal remedies, wise advice, an accurate weather forecast,

and so on. But I would be lying a little. In truth, 99 per cent of what Granny Dee did was for the Greater Good, but tended, along the way, to be very much for the Smaller Bad, at least for those who felt her wrath. She had a particular anger for what she called “dunderheided men”. To Granny Dee, most men fell under this category, which was pretty much on the nail. She was not one for men who treated women as less than their equal, at the very minimum. Nor did she approve of a drunken lout staggering home and taking out his impotent rage on a

woman. Likewise, any man rash enough to call her “my dear” or such terms. What did she do? Well, all manner of delightful things, from the “disappearing act” trick for physical bullies (which was not, really, a trick, or permanent, in that the recipients tended to wash up a few months later, in parts) to a range of interesting and impressive transformations. It’s a little-known fact that more than one small yappy dog in town is descended from dunderheads who offended Granny Dee, and were majicked into canine form. In return, she would sometimes replace the more prominent transformed men with dogs that she had turned into human form. Inevitably, this was for the best, though we had one notable mayor whose resultant habit of urinating in corner of his office caused quite a scandal. I am not sure exactly what happened to Granny Dee. She didn’t die, so much as just get so old and tiny that I believe the is still here, but invisible to the eye. But handy to sort out some of Cape May’s more egregious dunderheads, from time to time.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, murder mysteries

etective stories have been popular since Edgar Allen Poe introduced the form with Murder in the Rue Morgue in 1841. Poe usually gets the credit, although some say the 1819 German tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Mademoiselle de Scuderi, contains many of the elements of detective fiction — the locked room, the quirky investigator, the seemingly unsolvable crime. The Notting Hill Mystery of 1863 and The Moonstone of 1868 carried mysteries out to novel length, and, in the 20th century, Agatha Christie expanded the public’s appetite. For more than a century, mysteries have drawn legions of readers. In Cape May, mysteries also draw diners. Solve a mystery between meals on a Murder Mystery Weekend. Apparently, playing detective is hungry work. Agatha Christie used food to bring her characters to life, feeding boiled fish, chicken and measurably square sandwiches to sensitive-stomached Hercule Poirot. Christie lets sensible Miss Marple enjoy small luxuries — a big-bellied teapot, perfect poached eggs, or an apple meringue. Christie also used food to

bring about death, using poisoned marmalade, tea, hot chocolate, and fish paste to kill off characters. Detective Nero Wolfe hires a chef to prepare meals in his New York townhouse, introducing Depression-era readers to delicacies like starlings with sage and polenta and regional treats like Creole curds and cream. Even Sherlock Holmes, a man whose habits dull the appetite, likes his pots of tea, rashers and eggs, and beef sandwiches. He values brandy on a cold day, and treats John Watson to a woodcock and foie gras pie. Yum? Cape May’s murder mystery weekends promise puzzles and fun in between boun-

tiful breakfasts and decadent desserts. The Henry Sawyer Inn and the Twin Gables Inn have partnered with the East Lynne Theater Company to offer a Murder Mystery Weekend October 27 and 28. Guests play all the parts — detective, murderer, innocent bystander, and more — and are given just enough information to “get sleuthing skills going.” The fun begins with Friday night appetizers, when each guest will receive a dossier with the information needed to play the assigned role. The solution will be revealed at a dessert reception on Saturday, after dinner at a local restaurant. Make reservations at the Henry Sawyer Inn at 609884-5667 or henrysawyerinn@verizon.net; or at Twin Gables, 609-884-7332. Elaine’s has three weekends full of “mystery and mayhem” in November. Start with cocktails on Friday where you meet the suspects, and ponder the possibilities over breakfast on Saturday. Seek more clues at the dinner and submit your theory on Sunday morning, after another indulgent breakfast Call 609-884-1199 or visit elainescapemay. com for more information.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am dating a man who told me on our first date that he gives “these things 60 days” and then breaks up because “60 days is enough time to tell if the relationship is going to work.” He said he just wanted to be “up front” with me. We are two weeks in and I really, really like him. What will I do if he breaks up with me when 60 days comes around? What can I do to make sure that doesn’t happen? — Deadline Phobic Dear Phobic Are you crazy? You really want to keep this guy who is setting you up like a decoy for target practice? The Answer Lady will tell you exactly how to keep him, if that’s what you want. Dump him after 30 days. Tell him it’s not working out and he’s right, there’s no

Wise answers to perplexing questions

sense prolonging the agony. And stay firm. He’ll be on you like bees to honey. Speaking of which, just to soften the blow, give him the gift of honey when you tell him it’s over. Pop over to Cape May Honey Farm and buy him a parting gift of their Morning Power Pack. Or buy yourself one because the Answer Lady knows you will not follow her advice and that on day 61, you will need some bee healing. Dear Answer Lady My 15-year-old daughter is well endowed and an A-student in a private school. Last

week the principal called me in to bring her a change of clothing because he said the T-shirt she was wearing was too revealing and might upset the boys. I refused. It was not too tight. It was a T-shirt and within their clothing standards. Why should my daughter be made to feel ashamed of her body? Why should she be held accountable for the actions of an entire sex? What do you think? — Outraged Dear Outraged The Answer Lady finds the principal’s decision perplexing. You might suggest, since it is a private school, that if he feels this strongly, he should institute a uniform code of dress so that the rules apply to everyone, not just certain ones. Meanwhile, reinforce to your daughter that she has done nothing wrong and should not let her self-esteem suffer because of this humiliating way of handling the raging hormones of others. Sounds like a sundae at Dellas’ Five-n-Dime luncheonette counter is in order for both you and your daughter. Nothing soothes the soul more than ice cream — well alcohol does, but that’s several years down the road.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

M

ovies can sometimes bring the animal out in us, am I right? This weekend, Cape May Film Society partners with our friends at Animal Outreach for a double feature that will be the cat’s meow.Lil Bub & Friendz features a cat’s adventures with her pals as they visit with friends and otherwise have the feline fun that you’d see on social media. The film was featured at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. If you can’t get enough of these videos, you’ll not want to miss this film. The second part of the double feature is The Black Cat, the classic 1934 horror film directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and starring horror film greats Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. This movie was the first of eight to pair the iconic actors, and it became the biggest box office hit of the year for Universal Pictures. It was also renowned for being one of the first movies with an almost continuous music score. Both of these films will screen this Sunday, October 29, beginning at 3:00pm at West Cape May Borough Hall. When you purchase a bag of popcorn for the event, the film society

The Black Cat will be shown this Sunday will donate a can of cat food to Animal Outreach. The film society has a few more events coming up that are noteworthy. Golden Slumbers is speaking lecture featuring local celebrity mortician (you heard that right), Gene Schultz, who is the past Director of New York City’s Famed Campbell Funeral Home. Some call him Mortician to the Stars, and he will provide an insider’s glimpse into the lives and deaths of Hollywood’s famous!

On November 18, join the film society for a great movie and discussion based on the book In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. Have you ever wondered what to eat to be healthy? This film explores food and tries to debunk the media barrage of conflicting claims about nutrition. Also, this weekend join us at the First Presbyterian Church in Cape May for the silent film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari with live organ music. And do you feel something is missing from your fall to-do list? Could it be that you’re wondering why we’re not writing about our annual film festival, which had been part of the autumn lineup of fun things to do in Cape May? The reason is simple. Remember we’ve moved our annual film festival to the spring, and it’s now April 2018. Keep your calendar open and watch here for details about the festival. Visit our website at newnjstatefilmfestival.com to learn more about all the ways the Cape May Film Festival is out in the community.

Bird Droppings

L

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ooking out the window of my office I just saw a soaring adult bald eagle. So? Precisely. Eagles are now so common in New Jersey, we almost take them for granted. A dozen sightings a day is average fare at the Hawk Watch Platform, these days. But only a couple of decades ago, a dozen bald eagles was what you might hope for over the course of the entire three-month hawk count. What’s changed? Numbers, obviously. Back in 1976 there was but a single bald eagle nest in New Jersey. Now there might be close to 200. Not a day goes by that I don’t see two or six on my way to and from work. At the Hawk Watch at Cape May Point, the birds are about hourly. And while some viewers have grown so jaded that an eagle hardly rates a raised binocular, I still slam optics to eyes. Common they might be but regal, too. The founding fathers thought so. So does the Philadelphia NFL franchise. Plus the 101st Army Airborne division. So don’t take a knee when an eagle

passes. Stand up and savor a great bird and conservation success story. Yes bald eagles steal fish from osprey, but it takes a measure of skill to relieve a smaller more nimble raptor of its hard-earned fare. And, yes, the call of a bald eagle is so enfeebled that in advertisements featuring eagles, they overdub the call of a red-tailed hawk, but there is something about that snow white head and tail that commands attention. The six-foot wing span gets your attention, too. As for hunting skill, I’ve watched eagles fly

down black ducks in level flight and once watched a bird stoop into a flock of herring gulls and emerge with dinner. Eagles come with high entertainment value, too. Migrating birds often linger over the Hawk Watch Platform and multiple birds interact. On two occasions I’ve seen birds lock talons and cartwheel over the platform. The ooh, ahh factor was about a 12 on a scale of 1-10. But I’m not going to lie to you, from October on, the eagle most of us are aching to see is golden eagle. Unlike bald eagle, golden eagles remain rare. They no longer breed in the northeastern US. But a few do winter locally. In migration, they are associated with strong northwest winds in late October and early November. Dress warmly and plan your excuse in advance. A golden eagle is worth missing work, skipping school, or being late for that scheduled procedure. If the cold front falls on your anniversary, bring your spouse. It will give you something to talk about over dinner at your favorite Cape may restaurant.
