Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

t had to happen, didn’t it. The Exit Zero Burns Supper, once the scrappy little engine that could, has gone all corporate. We’ve lost touch with our roots. We’ve become that band that stops playing the clubs and starts appealing to 80,000-strong arena crowds. Or something like that. The truth is, we’ve been bursting at the seams for a few years now and it was time to either put a cap on it, and disappoint lots of new people who wanted to come... or to expand and get a bigger boat. And that’s what we’ve done. Which is why the fourteenth annual event will be held at the mighty Cape May Convention Hall on Friday, January 26. I will admit to having some misgivings about losing the pub vibe from 12 happy years at the Ugly Mug... and then there was that barnstormer at Carney’s last year. You thought that place got busy in August? It was heaving last January. But the upside is that we can sell up to around 350 tickets and we can enjoy the unmissable wail of the bagpipes on a big

stage, along with some wonderful Celtic rock music. You’ll also have to suffer the sight of me taking center stage, too, and murdering The Proclaimers’ “500 Miles.” But hey, it’s my party and I’ll sing if I want to. This time around, we are going to set up a buffet. That way, you won’t have to wait for your food. And there will be bars offering wines from Hawk Haven along with beers from Cape May Brewing Company. I’m also hoping to get some specialty whisky. To recap... you get a three-course din-

ner and a whole night of entertaiment for the ridiculous sum of $35. Proceeds go to Music Connects, the nonprofit arm of Exit Zero Jazz Festival which aims to bring music into the lives of kids in Cape May County who may otherwise not get the chance. Buy tickets online at ezstore.us or call 609-770-8479. Staying on the subject of us... I want to officially announce that we will be moving across Sunset Boulevard this spring to launch Exit Zero Filling Station. It will be a groovy gas station, a merchandise AND convenience store... and a restaurant I am insanely excited to introduce to you. We will still be offering some Indian and Thai cuisine, along with a whole LOT more. In the meantime, Exit Zero Cookhouse is shuttered. Please also note that we will be vacating our store at Sunset on December 31. So, yes, for a few months this winter and spring, you will have to live without an Exit Zero Store while we plan this exciting development. More on the details later. In the meantime, a very happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Well, considering the theme of this issue is all about turkey, it comes as no surprise that this week’s dish consists of...you guessed it, turkey. Now, if you’re one of those people who either go out or eat at a friend’s house for Turkey Day, then you may just miss out on what we think is the best part of Thanksgiving, the leftovers. Football is a close second and friends and family come in third. Wink-wink. So where can you order up a Thanksgiving meal after this Thursday? Lucky Bones offers a houseroasted turkey meal with cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy every Sunday for $13 until 5pm. Now that’s something to give thanks for!

This elegant wine is well balanced with rich aromas of raspberry, black currants and figs flowing over notes of chocolate and tobacco. Enjoy with red meats and pasta dishes or all by itself.

With all the buzz of Winter Wonderland opening at Congress Hall this weekend, we’re going to send you over to the Brown Room for a toasted old fashioned. It consists of beer barrel bourbon, toasted almond syrup, black walnut bitters and apple orange candied almonds. Sounds pretty delicious huh? Now, not only would this cocktail pair perfectly with your Thanksgiving meal, it will also warm you up as you peruse through the magical display Congress Hall puts forth on their Grand Lawn. Bourbon has a way of feeling like you’re covered in a warm fluffy blanket just after a couple sips! So stay warm this weekend and take a ride on that magical old carousel!

My favorite spot in the world is in a little caé I know, by the banks o the Bosphorus: I sit with book in hand (Cool Cape May — which I hand annotate and send to the publishers by mule post), fez on head, sipping tiny but potent cofees and twirling my mustaches, before retiring to a secret wrestling club, where we strip, oil up, and…. oh wait, my manservant, Kitchener, is interrupting my dictation: he seems feverish… Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, I love turkeys. Not as much as Turkey, but still. Did you know that that bird was once legally sacred in Cape May. To harm, impede or ofend one was punishable by death or — i the crime was particularly heinous — exile to Wildwood. It was all through a slip o the pen, when the city constitution was being drawn up, and we did not think to pause while we compiled a lunch order. The line “and no one shall in any way harm a dog” (we have always been big on canine protection here) became “and no one shall in any way harm a turkey.” And when

lunch came, you can only imagine out horror when we found ourselves dining on poodle on rye, mayo and pickles on the side. At least it solved the mystery o the disappearance o Ernie Hemingway’s beloved Miss Lulu. In the fuss, retching and retribution that followed, we didn’t notice the turkey line, and it was made law. It took a decade to change it, during which time those pesky birds went from being a charming occasional sighting, and lunch, to being a damnable nuisance. Turkeys — the most cunning o birds,

and the most arrogant — were soon taking up the entire sidewalk, deliberately blocking the street and occupying every window seat in the best restaurants, not to mention making a dreadful mess o the bar stools in The Brown Room. There, they would drink Wild Turkey and pick ights with unwary stangers, who would be goaded into stepping outside for what he assumed was a one-to-one bout o isticufs, but who would then be set upon by a hundreds o the foul fowl. They took over most civic posts in town, and at one stage comprised 90 per cent o the police force: the other 10 per cent was an Irish fellow name O’Shuanessy who in all matters o brainpower and integrity was exactly like a turkey, and so was let alone by them. In the end, we found a loophole in the constitution and had our famed Night o the Long Sandwiches, where the turkeys were shown how things really are. It’s why to this day I am not overly fond o their meat, as we were compelled to consume the evidence o our legal but unsavory deed: have you ever had to eat three entire turkeys on your own?

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner o relationship quandaries, matters o the heart and ethics. I you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup o cofee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Since my parents died four years ago, my older sister insists on hosting Christmas dinner. There are TEN of us, for god’s sake and we all have wives and husbands and children and grandchildren who are tired of this drill. Everyone is afraid of my sister, including me, but no one wants to tell her. It was fine the first two years after my mother died, but now it’s time we made our own traditions. How would you handle it, Answer Lady? — Hogtied Dear Hogtied Sounds as though a coup d’etat is already underway. It starts with one sibling having the courage o their convictions and that might be you. The easiest out is to plan a trip to the mountains or the islands, just not this

Wise answers to perplexing questions

one. The adult thing to do is to tell your sister that you and your family have decided to join your in-laws for Christmas at Congress Hall, and suggest that an alternative family gathering be planned in the future. Brace yoursel for the fallout, the guilt and, o course, the martyr speech, but know that others will follow your example, so you must stay strong. Your sister will have to bend or find that these vital family ties will break. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend wants to be invited to our

family Christmas party and I don’t think I want to. We haven’t been dating long and because of pressures like these, I’m not sure we’ll be dating much longer. She has made it clear she wants to be married soon. I’m still on the fence about everything and I don’t need another highly charged situation because bringing a date to meet my family will be interpreted by them as “serious”. They’ll be picking out wedding invitations before we leave. But telling her may end the relationship right then and there and I don’t want that either. — Pressure Cooker Dear Cooker A romantic dinner at Peter Shields Inn is in order. Ater dinner, stop by Fins for an ater-dinner cocktail and tell her your concerns — that your family will misinterpret her presence and that you are not ready for that. I she ratchets up the ante, be prepared to tell her that you don’t know where the relationship is headed yet and be prepared for the consequences. However, the Answer Lady suspects that she will hang in there to see where the ride takes you both.

The Movie Column

C

Cape May Stage’s new holiday show, reviewed by Veronica Scutaro

urt Foy, Matthew Hardy and Jeremy Konopka take the audience on an irreverent romp through the holiday season in Cape May Stage’s The Ultimate Christmas Show (ABRIDGED), a variety show now playing with great humor, satire and just plain fun. Because o a snowstorm, three players must be an ENTIRE variety show on their own. And they do a magnificent job. High energ is the key phrase for Foy, Hardy and Konopka, who are nonstop. While there is a certain amount o audience participation, the actors approach audience members with respect and sensitivity, so don’t be put o i you aren’t a “get in the fray” type o holiday reveler. The show has some real highlights that shouldn’t be missed, including ‘The Twelve Days o Christmas’ (where did you get that memory, Mr Foy?), the Bee Gees (all three players here outdid themselves showing the audience their excellent voices and maybe not so great disco duds! Remember those?) and “The Nutcracker.” Bravo, Jeremy

Nonstop fun in The Ultimate Christmas Show Konopka! A shout-out is well-deserved for his “ballet” skills. There is a time in every culture, in every nation, in every generation when people need to take a breath and relax. Take the time to laugh at yoursel and at each other, too, with tenderness and heart. Some o the repartee in this witty comedy can make the audience pause and think and that’s a good thing. That time to step back, take stock and feed your funny is upon us. See The Ultimate

Christmas Show (ABRIDGED) to sing some songs, laugh at yourself, and be thoroughly entertained. Now let’s take a brie look at the 2018 lineup o productions planned by Cape May Stage. First, Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End, a loving tribute and lampoon o life in the suburbs filled with light-hearted humor and nuggets o wisdom that give insight into the life and family o the beloved 1960s columnist (May 23-June 22). Next, Neil Simon’s Chapter Two, this semi-autobiographical story o a recently widowed writer, his press agent brother, soap star love interest, and her neurotic best friend explores what it means to take a second chance on romance (June 27-August 3). The Lion of Winter is a tale o sibling rivalry, adultery, and intrigue in a classic that chronicles the personal and political conflicts o Henry II (August 8-September 14). The Shuck is a world premiere from a Cape May native (September 19-November 9), and An Actor’s Carol is next year’s holiday production (November 14-December 30). So mark your calendars!

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

he holidays are just around the corner and there’s still time to get that perfect git, one that will transform a life, not simply ill a slot on that git list. Consider binoculars. Butterf lies, dragonf lies, honeybees. Studying f lowers through binoculars is like stepping into a Georgia O’Keefe painting. The color and detail in today’s instruments will simply blow you back to a brain stem. Best o all, there is a binocular to it every budget. You can buy ield-worthy binoculars for under $100 or you can borrow on your retirement and treat your young John James Audubon to a German Alpha, which run from $349 to $3,000. New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory specializes in putting high quality, nature-calibrated optics in people’s hands. We it binoculars, not just sell them, and we take the obligation seriously. We’ll even take the time to calibrate them for your eyes. What do you need to know before you

buy? Nothing, i you are buying from us. Cape May Bird Observatory’s sales force can work you through all the arcane qualities that distinguish good glass from not. There are lots o ways to go wrong when buying binoculars. One o them is buying binoculars that do not it your hands or frame. I once hosted a birding workshop in which a petite beginning birder arrived wearing Zeiss Night Owl binoculars. The large and heavy instruments ofered a great image but did not

come with a Sherpa to tote them. The instruments dangling from her neck, my student resembled a binocular with arms and legs. Ater a day o frustration I coaxed her into using a smaller and eminently more user-friendly instrument and she was a much happier birder. All you need to know is that CMBO only sells the best ield-worthy binoculars at any given price point. We sell it, we stand by it. We’re a New Jersey Audubon ailiate so our job is not to sell optics but to empower you to engage the natural world. For over 100 years that has been NJ Audubon’s mission. What about spotting scopes? CMBO has the region’s inest selection o scopes, too, as well as tripods, natural history books, and bird-related gits. Binoculars for the holidays. This year, don’t just give a present. Change a life. The CMBO is at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point (hours 9:30-4:30, closed Tuesday); 609-884-2736 www.birdcapemay.org.
