Ramblings From The Editor
H
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ad a great meeting the other day with Laurie Taylor, the city’s marketing director, about the Exit Zero Burns Supper, at Cape May Convention Hall on Friday, January 26. At first, I was loathe to take our event from the pub vibe to the big space at Convention Hall (we had 12 great gigs at the Ugly Mug, before switching to Carney’s last year). But now I’m just plain old excited at amping up the heat to be a real highlight on the Cape May calendar. There will be at least 320 people (assuming y’all buy your tickets!) seated café-style, enjoying great Celtic music from Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks (translation: No Pants) band. We’re also hosting a whisky sponsor for the first time, thanks to the folks at Usquaebach, a fabulous 250-year old Scotch — the word means Water of Life in Gaelic and is mentioned in one of Robert Burns’ poems. Burns, in case you are unaware, is the great 18th-century Scots poet — he wrote Auld Lang Syne among many others — who is
haggis, including the veggie type, or shepherd’s pie. Buy your tickets online at ezstore.us, or call our store at 609-770-8479 and pay by credit card... BUT, please note, we are moving out of our store on December 23, so if you don’t like buying things online, get yourself over to 109 Sunset Boulevard toute de suite. We just published our latest book (I think that’s more than 40 we’ve got in our wheelhouse so far), a Cape May memoir by Dave Clemans called Destination Exit 0. We previously published three other books by Dave — he’s a multi-talented old bastard, aka Renaissance Man. He writes, he paints (hundreds of beautiful oil paintings), he cooks (founded the late Cucina Rosa restaurant), he plays the ukulele, plus he and wife Chris restore historic properties. Oy! The book, which is a fun mashup of Cape May memories and Dave’s opinions on everything from fashion to lasagna, is available at our store or online at ezstore.us. It’s a nice little stocking stuffer. Until next week, stay cozy, my friends...
³ honored at Burns Suppers, which are held worldwide. A FREE Usquaebach tasting begins at 5pm, which is when the doors open at Convention Hall. Even if you don’t drink whisky, you’ll be able to hang out in the lovely lobby and enjoy wine from Hawk Haven, beer from Cape May Brewing Company, Tito’s vodka and other drinks. Your super-cheap $35 ticket does not include drink, but it does include the aforementioned entertainment plus a three-course dinner — entrées are

There’s something incredibly comforting about slurping down a bowl of hot soup after romping outside in the snow. It’s the perfect medicine to cure the chill in your bones and warm your belly. Which brings us to the main inspiration for this week’s dish, Campbell’s soup. Particulary the ’90s commercial where the snowman sits down and takes a spoonful of chicken noodle soup and thaws out into a happy little boy. If you don’t remember, Google it... it’s pretty adorable. 5 West Pub takes a delicious twist on the classic soup with their buffalo chicken noodle soup. It’s a house favorite and far surpasses the Campbell’s brand. You could say, they sleighed it.

Winter is coming... but unlike the HBO hit “Game of Thrones,” where viewers have eagerly been waiting for seven long seasons for winter to finally arrive, it’ll officially be here next Thursday. So that little brush of snow we had last week is just the beginning. Luckily, there are still places open this time of year to grab a drink and stay toasty. The Rusty Nail is our pick this week because... have you seen that fireplace? It’s the perfect spot to curl up on their couches and enjoy a Violet Rose cocktail, which is one of the drinks on the Nail’s new winter menu. It consists of fig-infused vodka, raspberry simple syrup, lemon juice, fresh blackberry, mint and ginger beer. It’s a cocktial fit for a queen... of dragons.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
on’t dare talk to me about “snow” unless it’s so deep you can’t see out the windows. The second floor windows, at that. Back in the day, we used to consider anything less than that a “flurry”. “It’s flurrying outside,” I counseled Scott of the Antarctic as we sat glumly looking at the falling flakes fall on his ill-fated expedition. “Best settle in for a few months until it passes, old chap.” Of course, he didn’t listen, and I grudgingly volunteered to step out and have a wander, to seek help. I admit it was a robust flurry: I even had to roll down the sleeves on my tweed jacket, and lower the ear flaps on my deerstalker hat. Of course, back then, Cape May used to see an average daily snowfall of 100 inches, from October thru March, thanks to a bizarre conjuction of geography, tide and ill fortune. We used to sit at The Admiral Hotel bar, whiskies in hand, noses pressed against the window, on October 1, as unsuspecting Shoebies strolled past in T-shirts (a hideous invention, unless snug and designed to show one’s pectorals off) and flip-flops (a
hideous invention: feet are not meant to be displayed in public), gazing up at the aching blue sky with not a care in the world. “I see a cloud,” someone would mutter excitedly, and sure enough, there on the horizon would be the kind of tiny perfect fluffy cloud that one imagines is the shape of a rabbit or other small mammal. “You out there!” one of us would cackle, tapping on the glass to catch the fools’ attention. “There’s snow coming!” Invariably, the hapless tourists would ignore us, or sometimes even make the
universal rotating-finger-against-temple motion that indicated mental deficiency, to their companions, as we rocked with laughter and raised our glasses in mocking salute. Then, before their scoffing had even died away, there would be a soft and satisfying “crump” noise, and we’d be looking out at a wall of snow, in which confused silhouettes could be seen. “Watch out for the flurries,” I would crow (I recognize that I was, then, what was in the lingo of the time known as ‘a horse’s ass’). In time, those snowfalls accumulated and started to form the Cape May Glacier, and that was, even I admit, a little too much snow. So we had to take steps to break the climate cycle, by shunting our city a few yards, so we could catch the very edge of the Humboldt Current. And that is how we came to have the canal. Also, why we seldom get little more than a flurry. So beware: if you use the “s” word at me and I can in fact see any of your head still protruding from a drift, I will strike your foolish head with my cane.

The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s time to winterize your home AND your body
W
inter is coming, even for those of us who can’t tell our Starks from our Lannisters. We must be prepared, which likely means a visit to Swain’s is in order. Winterize the car — check the wiper blades, wiper fluid and antifreeze; pack a blanket, gloves and jumper cables in the trunk; find the ice scraper and folding shovel. Winterize the house — change furnace filters, reverse ceiling fans and install storm doors and windows. For a seasonal home, shut off the water, set the thermostat to around 52, unplug the fridge and leave the door open. When that work is done, tackle the more pleasant chore of winterizing your skin. Changing seasons can be tough on skin, particularly the change from fall to winter. Cold winds dry exposed skin, heated indoor air lacks moisture, and holiday stress makes all of your body’s cells work harder, leading to skin that cracks and itches. Caring for your skin will make the long weeks until spring more comfortable. Drink more water, shorten your hot shower, wear gloves, switch
from lotions to thicker moisturizing creams. Never leave the house without lip balm and remember that your face still needs sunscreen. Beyond that, consider professional help to care for your body’s largest organ. Cape May is the perfect place to prepare your skin for the harsh winds of winter. At Sea Spa, seasonal specials are on tap to get your skin into fighting shape. Indulge in a Sugar & Spice Body Scrub, which uses pure cane sugar to exfoliate. Fifty minutes is $100. The Sugar & Spice Pedicure spoils your feet with seasonal scents and Christmassy colors for $60. Peppermint Bliss offers the highlights of the spa experience for $99.
If time is short, treat yourself to the Secret Escape at Accent on Beauty for $125. Enjoy an hour of pampering including a back scrub, custom facial and treatment for your hardworking hands and feet. For the simple, skin softening pleasures of a manicure or pedicure, try Shear Sunsations or Artizan. Try the Couples Hot Lava Massage for $275 at the Well Center to address the winter aches that are more than skin deep. Cape May Day Spa offers the Naughty and Nice package for $390 — perfect for couples who can’t decide what to get each other. These side-by-side Swedish massages are followed by pedicures to put a little pep in your holiday step. Or, choose All of the Lights package for $275 to get a holiday glow with a body scrub, facial, and spa manicure. Boost your immune system with a seawater bath that won’t require a lifeguard, a hot stone massage and a spa manicure for $220. Or try the Holiday Smorgasbord — enjoy four peaceful hours featuring a little bit of everything, including light refreshments, for $380.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I are worried about our son and daughter. Well, not worried, but concerned. They are 10 and 12 years old and they don’t read books unless forced to. If it isn’t on a computer, it doesn’t exist. My wife and I are avid readers and have a library of books which they seem to have no inclination to look at. We would like to encourage them to read more, without being heavy handed. What do you suggest? — Literacy Lions Dear Lions The first thing to do is Goggle top 10 books for adolescents and sort through which books would be of interest to your children. Do NOT order through Amazon but take the trip to Cape Atlantic Book Company and buy there. If they don’t have it, they will order
Wise answers to perplexing questions
it. Then start a family book group. Read the books along with your children and discuss over pizza and popcorn. Make it fun and, most importantly, listen to your kids and what they think. If you are looking for a book that is fun to read on Christmas morning, pop into Just For Laughs. They specialize in erudite works like My Quotable Kid, Farts in the Wild and Darth Vader’s Little Princess. Dear Answer Lady I am thinking about Christmas presents for my in-laws, which is complicated by
my husband, who is critical of the fact that I buy online exclusively. It is just so easy and I like the anonymity of it, but he makes me feel guilty. He maintains I am “single-handedly helping to destroy independent businesses.” I consider this a gross exaggeration, though I am aware that I spend too much time in front of the computer. Where do you recommend I begin? — Willing to Change Dear Willing Put your coat on. Get some fresh air and visit Washington Street Mall — there is so much to choose from. For bath products, go to Bath Time and A Place on Earth. For unique gifts, there are several places to choose from, including Madame’s Port, Across the Way and Good Scents. Gallery de May and Soma Art Gallery are excellent for that special someone and don’t forget that gift certificates are no-fault choices for their favorite restaurants or just about any store that strikes your fancy. Hard to please? Ahhh, The Original Fudge Kitchen is always a safe choice as well as Louisa’s Chocolate Bar and Collier’s Liquor Store. Now, shop til ya drop.

The Movie Column
“Justice League,” reviewed by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
D
o critics ever simply “watch” a movie? Let me say right from the top, I am not a critic. I’m a reviewer. Big difference. I express my opinion about movies, but I don’t tell you what movies to go watch. Okay, truth be told sometimes I do tell you what to watch. What can I say? I get excited about some movies. If I like them a lot, I see the more than once. Like this week’s movie. If you look on some of the movie sites, you will see that the new superhero flick, Justice League, was given a bad rating. I mean really bad. But sitting right next to the critic score on Rotten Tomatoes is the audience score. Vastly different. So what audiences are loving the critics are trashing. I’m with the audience on this one. Certainly there is a lot to criticize about this movie. The characters are not so well developed — critics were right in calling them one-dimensional. The premise is not at all unique; in fact I can’t tell you how many times I have seen it. And the dialogue? One more cliché would have placed
Superheroes galore in Justice League me on a tipping point. But it was fun. No I’m not just sticking up for this movie because it includes Wonder Woman. It’s no secret that I have a crush on Gal Gadot, who masterfully plays the character. Equally as fun is watching Ezra Miller play The Flash. The last time I saw this guy in a great film was when he was a teenager in City Island (2010), one of the films I feature in my book Flix You Missed (which you
can buy in time for the holidays at FlixYouMissed.com — shameless self-promotion). Over the years, DC Comics has struggled to demonstrate consistent success with its superheroes on film. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. What worked: Wonder Woman earlier this year. Sorry, am I gushing? My girlfriend says, “Get a grip.” What hasn’t worked? Well… more than just a few adaptations. In contrast, rival Marvel Comics (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Avengers) has seemingly had more successes — but has had its fair share of failures as well. Suffice it to say, DC needed a win — and while it didn’t get one with critics it got one with us folks in the audience. What critics fail to see sometimes is that audiences rip a lyric from the classic Cyndi Lauper tune — they just want to have fun. Sure, the characters are one-dimensional but nobody seemed to take themselves too seriously. The action sequences packed a punch. And by the time the movie was over, you just thought about how much fun you had. Who can be critical of that?

Bird Droppings
Y
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ou’ve decided to give your budding John James Audubon binoculars for Christmas, but you don’t know what to look for. First comes fit. The instruments must be compact enough to fit small hands. Small enough so an index finger falls easily upon the focus wheel. It’s also vital that the distance between the two barrels (the inter-pupillary distance) is capable of accommodating close-set eyes. If the hinged barrels cannot be brought close enough, it is impossible for those with closeset eyes to get a clear image. Weight is also a concern. Binoculars are, very literally, a weight upon your neck. For most people, anything under 28 oz is fine. Adjustable eyecups are also important, especially if the birder wears eyeglasses. Waterproof instruments are also desirable. Not water “resistant,” not “splash proof,” but waterproof. Happily, there are instruments available that meet all these standards and which range in price from $50 to $500.
Power or magnification? Eight power (8x) are very user-friendly and serve well for all-around nature study. Higher magnification is too difficult to hold steady. The image will dance in the glass. NEVER buy a zoom or no-focus binocular. How about stabilized binoculars? Sure, if you have a pronounced hand tremor. If not, most users can get the optimal image quality out of a non-stabilized 8x glass. The sleek, “roof prism” design offers the best stability because it allows users to keep
elbows close to the body, not up and out, tiring muscles. As for field of view, bigger is better. No less than 300 feet at 1,000 yards. Close focus? Anything under 12 feet works but binoculars that focus down to six feet or less are prized, especially for viewing butterflies. There are lots of optic buying resources online, including featherEDGE optics. But if you live in Cape May you would be remiss not to stop by the Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point, to take advantage of their expertise and test drive the finest selection of binoculars in New Jersey. Prices are competitive and the store staff understand their product line and your need. Binoculars for the holidays? It’s transforming. Imagine... intimacy with the natural world that is supernatural. Change a life. Give someone the gift of vision. It’s wow! in a glass. Search the world over — ain’t nuthin’ beats wow! It’s been 50 years since I first brought binoculars to my eyes and the wow! remains the same.

LAYLA came to the shelter after living in an outside environment. As a result, she loves to interact with people at her own pace but wants to learn new skills. Her previous owner had several children and said that Layla was comfortable with them. Layla has a soulful expression that begs for attention and care. Won’t you be the one?
MISSY came to the shelter after living with her family for eight years because her owner became ill. She is house trained and has excellent canine manners. She enjoys playing with her toys and running in the yard, but is also quite content to simply take a leisurely walk. Stop by the shelter and bring this little lady home for the holidays!
