Ramblings From The Editor
H
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ere’s some exciting news to end the year. There might finally be a future befitting one of Cape May’s most elegant and neglected buildings. Plans are afoot to move a dramatically expanded and improved library from its current site on Ocean Street to the Franklin Street School. Mayor Chuck Lear is expected to offer more information at his address on January 2. In a release issued last Friday, he said, “We are fortunate to have Cape May County operate the current library for our use, but it still has limited space for research and reading and virtually no space for meetings, lectures, exhibits or socializing. “My initial library idea was about a new facility, but the city-owned Franklin Street School, currently under a long-term lease with the Center for Community Arts, and the adjacent gymnasium might be an ideal site for an upgraded library and community center serving Cape May, West Cape May and Cape May Point.” As well as functioning as a library, the
new space could also be a great venue for museum exhibits involving the Greater Cape May Historical Society as well as continuing to accomplish some of the CCA’s interests — particularly the promotion of the city’s African-American heritage. Franklin Street School was opened in September 1928 as an elementary school for local African-American children. Twenty years later, with segregation banned by New Jersey, there was no longer that need. For decades this wonderful old building has lain

New Year!
practically unused. “The critical first step for the county and the city is a feasibility study,” said Lear. “Depending on the outcome of the feasibility study, discussions and negotiations with county officials could continue.” On the same subject, the Library Commission of Cape May has developed a survey about the services available at the city library. They will be mailed out to residents, plus there are copies available at City Hall and in the library — in both English and Spanish. The Spanish translation was completed by Para Plus Translations, who donated their services. A generous thing to do. Don’t miss the Exit Zero Burns Supper, at Cape May Convention Hall on Friday, January 26. There will be 320 people seated café-style, enjoying music from Pittsburgh’s Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of Nae Breeks. We’re also hosting a whisky sponsor, thanks to the folks at Usquaebach, a fabulous 250-year old Scotch. Buy your tickets online at ezstore.us, or call us at 609-770-8479.

Dish Of The Week We’re taking a winter break Closing Jan 2 — Reopening Feb 9!
Around 40 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, and the majority center around one goal: getting healthy. This means New Year’s Eve is likely your last hurrah, folks. So even if you’ve got a fancy-pants dinner planned, stop off, first, for a cheesesteak flatbread at Fins. With Cheese Whiz, filet tips, cheddar, mozzarella, a bacon shallot marmalade and spicy ketchup, it has “last hurrah” written all over it. Tomorrow, you’ll get healthy. But tonight, you’ll party like it’s 2017.

New Year’s Eve and champagne go together like salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly, January 1st and a hangover. This year, put on your sparkliest attire and order yourself a sparkly cocktail to match. We’re talking about the Ebbitt Room’s pear and cranberry bellini, made with fresh pear puree, elderflower liqueur and — the drink of the hour — champagne. Fun fact: The approximate number of bubbles in the average champagne flute is one million. See? You’re starting the new year off wiser already. Cheers! And remember, taxis and Ubers are your friends.
ENTER THE CLIPART CONTEST This is the Champagne Issue, which is why we hid a couple clinkin’ little glasses in an ad. Enter in one of two ways: 1. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
do adore champagne. I was saying just that very thing to my dear friend Bubbles Devere at an upscale reception at the D’Catur Mansion last week, and engaging in healthy debate with the editor of this very rag, a tuxedo’d Scotchman who exudes a certain virility as other men exude sweat. He was sipping at a pint of single malt, whereas Bubbles and I were throwing back champagne like there was no tomorrow, and I was reminded that Cape May was once the champagne capital of the world. The beverage was first known as capemagne and we exported so much that we had to dig a canal to meet demand. We also had a pipeline that ran under Wildwood, but enterprising locals tapped into it and were drunk as skunks for an entire year, so that was shut down (after being amusingly filled with gasoline — it made no difference to the thieving imbibers, at least until one of them lit a cigarette). But we were the toast of the world, until one careless day we allowed a party of Frenchmen to enter the city. Normally, a combination of carefully worded laws and
a pack of trained doberman pinschers prevents any such Gallic incursion, but we were careless, and a trio of beret’d fellow sneaked in and bludgeoned the guards at the champagne factory with a stale baguette, before making off with the recipe (wait… you thought champagne was like wine? Oh non! It is a purely chemical process, involving spring water, a bubble machine and a sticky syrup whose ingredients I cannot disclose, mostly because those French scoundrels stole the only copy of the recipe). Well, they rebranded and instead of
using the same packaging as we did — capemagne came in waxed paper sacks — they got all fancy with bottles and embossed labels. Well, we made quite a fuss, I tell you, and employed some hoity-toity lawyers from New York to take it to court, and won a substantial amount of money. I can’t recall what we did with it, but if I remember correctly, our accountant said he was buying large stakes in such unheard-of fledgling companies as Apple, Facebook, Google and Bitcoin. I told him he was a fool, but to go ahead anyway if it kept him out of mischief. I think he buried the paperwork in a tin box on the beach somewhere: if you stumble upon it, do be a darling and bring it to the Mansion, won’t you? The container is a shortbread tin from the old country, depicting a burly man in a kilt, with a little dog looking up it and a caption saying “Jings! Whit’s that?” or some such gibberish. Anyway, it being 8am, it is time to open a bag of vintage capemagne: I have a glass with my morning caviar and toast, and it sets me up nicely.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the countdown to 2018
ou’ve got a few days left to ponder your possibilities for 2018. What’s going to be different in 365 days? You could be planning a major life change, like a new home, a baby, or a run for office. Maybe you want to learn something — Cape May County Technical Schools offer useful courses in outboard motor repair, upholstery and woodworking, and certification in things like CPR and boater safety. They also offer enrichment courses for your leisure time, like guitar, dog obedience and Russian. Visit capemaytech.com for more information. Perhaps you need a party to kick 2017 to the curb. The Rusty Nail will ring in 2018 with an indoor beach party. Wear your flops and dance in the indoor sand pit. $50 general admission includes open bar, appetizers, a champagne toast, party favors and live entertainment. Add a buffet dinner at 6:30 or 8:30 for $75. Or, celebrate in classic style at Elaine’s, with dinner and a show for $75, complete with champagne toast and midnight breakfast. Treat yourself to
dinner at the Merion Inn, with an early, family-friendly seating at 4:30 with party hats, noisemakers and a “practice” countdown. Opt for the 7:00 seating at $90 per person for three courses plus piano music, a chef’s “amusee,” a champagne toast and another practice countdown, or go for the five-course meal at the 9:30 seating for $100 per person, with the real countdown to midnight. Tax and tip are extra. Plan to stay in? Your perfect New Year’s Eve may embrace the Danish concept of hygge, pronounced HYOO-ga, which kind of demands you shout it like a foghorn, but it’s more gentle than that. Hygge, meaning
something like “cozy togetherness,” has its roots in Norwegian for “wellbeing.” It describes the not-just-Scandinavian notion of reveling in a winter evening spent being quiet and rather lazy. Hygge can be a dinner with friends, a family curled up in the same room with different books, or a candlelit Tuesday dinner for one. If you love the idea of gathering with blankets and throw pillows, wearing clothes made for comfort instead of display, and spending time with people who don’t require constant conversation to connect, you may be practicing hygge. Swede Things likely has accessories to inspire you. Arm yourself for hygge with reading material from Cape Atlantic Book Company, pick up oversized mugs and hot chocolate from Love the Cook, start knitting a scarf with help from Fiber Arts, wrap yourself in a blanket from Flying Fish Studio and hygge out. If the piles of pillows hygge requires sounds like too much, try the Swedish concept of lagom — the “fruitful yet frugal” concept of living with “just enough.” Happy New Year!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Re: Last week’s Answer Lady in which she suggests that the lone Republican “suck it up” in the face of overzealous Democratic in-laws. I have to say I agree with you 100% of the time. Uncannily so. So this one came as a surprise. You really think the Republican should suck it up? My in-laws are Republicans and I posted a flier on my front door at Thanksgiving, saying they would be asked to leave if they brought up politics. Inexplicably, they still back Trump and I love them but can’t stand to hear them say that, so I stop it from happening. I think it’s totally unfair of him to have to suck it up. I felt for sure you would be turning on his wife’s family, who wanted to even bring up politics at Christmas dinner. — Whoa Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Whoa The Answer Lady absolutely gets your point. You are quite right. Why should he or anyone be held hostage for their views and be made to feel badly because they differ from the others? BUT you can put a flier on your door warning those of the opposite end of the political spectrum to “stifle themselves” IF you are the one hosting the dinner. In this instance, our Republican friend was the guest in someone else’s house and in-laws at that. The Answer Lady still maintains
that Little R. must take the high road and suck it up for one night. Going toe to toe with your in-laws at Christmas is just not going to end well. He can still defend his position CIVILLY, with the hope that the angels will reward him later and make sure he hosts the next gathering in which he will take your advice and put that flier on the door. Dear Answer Lady I am dating two women off and on and don’t know what to do about New Year’s Eve? I can’t go out with both of them. Can I? — In a Fix Dear Fix Either stay home or make a decision. Your question suggests that if you could take them both out and get away with it, you would. The Answer Lady has no sympathy for you. What did you have in mind — a first seating at the Merion Inn for one and dinner by the fire at the Blue Pig for the other? The Answer Lady is curious as to whether the two women are aware of each other. She suspects not. Consider it your New Year’s resolution to figure out what it is you want out of a relationship.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
W
inter doesn’t mean bird watchers go into hibernation until spring. Birds don’t hibernate and many bird species are only found here in winter. So it’s actually an exciting time in Cape May. Every patch of open water holds waterfowl. Great places to look for excellent views of wigeon, northern pintail, gadwall, and other rakishly plumaged birds include Lilly Lake, Bunker Pond in Cape May Point State Park and ponds at South Cape May. The fields along Stevens Street in West Cape May often host wintering Canada geese and the possibility of a rare goose among them — perhaps a cackling goose or white-fronted. Among the regular species attending your bird feeders, you may find pine siskin and, in some years, common redpoll. These irruptive species typically hang out with American goldfinch and, like them, are crazy about thistle seed. Siskin are like more crisply streaked pointy-faced house finch. Redpolls are akin to small, plumpish
finches with a touch of red on the crown. When not clutching your thistle sock, the flocks festoon birch trees, where they feast upon birch catkin. This should surprise no one. Where redpoll breed, birch trees are about the only woody plant to thrive. In Cape May, redpoll often arrive as late as February so if you have none now don’t despair. I recall one February morning at the Second Avenue jetty when hundreds of redpoll flew in off the ocean at sunrise. Exhausted, the
birds collapsed in the dune grass to join the savannah sparrows that eek out a living in this sparse vegetation. A special subspecies of savannah sparrow, the Ipswich sparrow favors dune habitat. Breeding exclusively on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, wintering along the Atlantic coast, Ipswich is slightly larger than other races of savannah. If your field guide treats Ipswich sparrow as a separate species, it is way, way out of date. Here’s a special New Year’s challenge: Try to find an Ipswich. Hint: try the edge of the dunes between Cape May and Cape May Point. But avoid stepping into the dunes. If you find a small feeding group of savannah sparrows, the paleness of Ipswich will be immediately apparent. Other birds to look for in this habitat include horned lark, snow bunting and lapland longspur. Good luck. And be alert for Snowy Owls. It’s a banner year. Yes, I realize sparrows are an acquired taste, but they really are dapper and easier to identify than you think.

BRONSON maintains his big smile in spite of saying goodbye to his family when they moved and could not keep him. He was clearly loved by his family which included a small child who hugged him very tightly before he went to his kennel in the shelter. Bronson would be the best present this Christmas. Let him be loved again!
OLIVER is a senior boy found wandering in Woodbine. He is calm in his kennel and nestles in his bed. When it is time for a walk, Oliver ambles along like a distinguished, older gentleman and enjoys sniffing his new environment. He deserves to spend the rest of his years in a loving home where he can snuggle. He’s the perfect Christmas pup!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
PHILLY lived her whole life with her brother. Although their owner loved them very much, he could no longer care for them, which is why they ended up here. Unfortunately, due to her age, Philly often gets passed by for the younger, energetic kitties. But she deserves love just like all the rest. Won’t you be the one this Christmas? She’s waiting...
LILY is a sweet lady whose owner passed. Now she is here at the shelter with her last years ahead of her. It’s alot for this old girl to handle. Lily just wishes that she could find another home again. Quiet with someone that just wants another old soul with them. Maybe watch tv again or read the paper. Remember Christmas is only days away!
ARTEMIS is the sweetest kitty you will ever meet. She becomes mush in your arms the second you hold her. And her cute little black dot on her nose is irresistable. Just come in and see for yourself! Although she requires two shots a day due to her diabetes, she takes it like a champ because she loves the attention. Give Artemis a second chance!
