Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.
TOM AND SUE CARROLL CAPE MAY
How long have you been coming here? We had never heard of Cape May when the Coast Guard sent us here in 1969. But we loved it from first glance. Two years later we moved to Jackson Street and opened the Mainstay B&B. Five years after that we opened what is now the Mainstay Inn. Who are you normally with? We are normally together and if not, we sure won’t tell Exit Zero. Favorite thing about Cape May? We both love history, historic settings, museums etc. Cape May is not just a beach town. The city offers year-around cultural and recreational activities and we enjoy them. Tom particularly looks forward to joining his tennis buddies almost every day. Sue is a regular at exercise classes at Franklin Street School. Least favorite thing? We wish the residents got along a little better, and weren’t so quick to criticize the efforts of others. We live in a wonderful, safe, accessible community, yet we fight over every issue, even fixing up a park. Favorite restaurants? When it is someone else’s turn to buy, we love 410 Bank and The Ebbitt Room. We also enjoy the wonderful selection of BYOBs, ranging from little Louisa’s to the elegant Union Park. If you could change one thing about Cape May what would it be? We are sad to see so many houses becoming house rentals. It would be wonderful if more people could experience the joy of living here year-round.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
sal. ty. dog
Slang for an experienced sailor who has spent much of his life aboard a ship at sea. A salty dog is often given increased credibility by ship mates in matters pertaining to ship-board life and duties.
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. Thank all your gods for getting Pinborough published in the United States. Established in Europe for many years she has had a running Twitter feed at #WTHThatEnding for a while. This newly released psychthriller is a modern love triangle that will leave the reader reeling until the final page. You will think you have it all figured out, but in the end will have to go back and trace how you lost the thread of the mystery.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
re you one of those people wondering about that giant tent on Lafayette Street, and just generally wondering what’s going on with the proposed public park? I recently asked our new mayor Chuck Lear for an update. By the way, the fact that I can ask the mayor for an update and receive a quick, honest answer is a small miracle I thank the gods for every day. Under the previous mayor, I’d have had to file half-adozen freedom of information requests to City Hall and still would likely have been blocked. Anyway, that big tent is where soil from the site gets dried out before being trucked off for testing — the site has long been polluted as a result of a coal gasification plant that existed there up until 1937. Jersey Central Power & Light have been cleaning up the site for several years, but work is still being done. Ultimately, the state Department of Energy will have to sign off before development can continue. Assuming that happens, the next step is uncertain. Mayor Lear told me he would like to see a committee set up to figure out what amenities should be included. I imagine a new
basketball court is a must-have. Do we still need a Little League field, though, or tennis courts? What about the nature trails that were previously discussed? I look forward to some good people being given a spot at the table for constructive, inspiring discussions. Speaking of good people, this has been a tough couple weeks. First, there was the death of Kyle Bove, a much-loved, big personality who passed away at the age of 33. Kyle, who served in the US Navy, dreamed of becoming an actor (and used to deliver Exit Zero)
³
is survived by siblings Kaitlyn, Brianna and Keith and mother Donna, a wonderful, graceful woman who’s already had to endure too many losses in life — two years ago this past week, she and her partner Ken Grace were grieving the death of Ken’s son Brandon at the age of 25. Condolences, also, to the whole Piacentine family — Jerry, Patti, Donnie Jr, Lauren, Talia et al — after Big Donnie lost his battle with cancer. Another well-loved character lost to the community. And last week we were stunned by the news that Jerry Griffin, a 28-year-old physical education teacher, suffered a series of strokes and was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden for treatment. Unbelievable. Just a few weeks earlier, I’d been congratulating Jerry and Helen Linney on their engagement. In the wake of Jerry’s illness there’s been a remarkable show of support by the community. “It’s been incredible,” his brother Ryan told me. “Jerry has been working so hard on his recovery — but we wouldn’t be where we are now without this community. The prayers are working and we are so grateful we can’t even put it into words.”

Dish Of The Week Like Alice in Wonderland (remember, it’s the March Hare issue), it’s time to go down the rabbit hole. Which means going on an adventure, maybe trying something out of the ordinary. And let’s face it, rabbit is no longer an everyday presence on American restaurant plates like it is in Europe. In fact, it’s regarded by some as being on the same gastronomic level as a squirrel. We beg to differ — done right, this can be a treat. And at The Ebbitt Room, it’s done right. The restaurant at the Virginia hotel is serving a Braised Rabbit appetizer. It’s served with kale pasta, caramelized onions, parmesan and rabbit jus. Hop along and try it.
BEER OF THE WEEK Misty Dawn Style: Saison ABV: 6.2% Cape May Brewing Company A medium-bodied ale is the perfect beer to watch winter turn to spring. A distinctive orange-leaning copper color with strong fruit notes — compliments of an estery yeast — accented by a peppery finish.
Open for DINNER Thursday through Monday
WINE OF THE WEEK Mas Donis Spanish Red $10.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store, 202 Jackson Street An elegant blend of Grenache and Syrah from the Montsant area of Spain. This red wine is dense yet elegant with approachable layers of cassis, berry and spice. A true value wine, enjoy!
Cocktail Of The Week Think of Alice in Wonderland and you might think of tea parties, which were hosted by the March Hare (the subject of this week’s issue) and the Mad Hatter. Since this is the cocktail column, we won’t be recommending that you go off and have a cup of Earl Grey at a local eatery. However, we DO recommend the Lady Grey, served at the Blue Pig Tavern in Congress Hall. This is a herbaceous concoction of Dickle Rye, cold brew Earl Grey tea, lemongrass syrup, lemon juice and thyme. If you want the cocktail but aren’t in the mood for food, they’ll serve you the drink at the adjoining Brown Room. And if it’s NOT your cup of tea, just disappear back down the rabbit hole.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have conflicted feelings about March and the Mad Hare. Which is a lot more than he is able to have about me, given that he met his untimely demise in Cape May at my hands. Well not technically MY hands, but it might as well have been. Oh, you can judge me, you with your rosy view of the world, and I know you blame me for that incident with Santa Claus and the landmine. And that Hare, he has some top-level spin doctors, with their picture of him as a gentle, pocket-watch-wearing japester. But really, he was an absolute asshole. Actually, now I think about it, I am not entirely sure he was an actual rabbit. I mean, he had the coarse body hair, the outsized ears and bare, long-clawed feet and the fluffy tail, but we’ve seen stranger in Wildwood, and they are technically human. One assumes. So anyway, he was down here one March, up to all kinds of irritating mayhem, and joined me in The Brown Room for whisky. I had neglected to mention to the Hare that my old pal Ernie Hemingway was inbound, and
I confess that I forgot to send a bellboy with a telegram to the airport to intercept Ernie when his Dakota seaplane landed. I totally blame myself: the Trophy Room in The D’Catur Mansion is filled with poor animals that Ernie encountered and murdered. And Ernie was always the kind to shoot first and think later. Actually, he tended to shoot first and not think at all, ever, but I digress: suffice to say the only living thing he met and did not successfully shoot was Your Albert, and only then because Yorkshire Terriers are composed of
90 per cent fur, and so Ernie managed only to blast a head-sized fluffy hole before Albert sank his tiny fetid teeth into Ernie’s ankle. From then on, the two observed a wary truce. But that night, when Ernie walked into The Brown Room and caught sight of me having a drink with a person-sized rabbit, he reached for his gun. Unluckily for Ernie, the Hare was even more of a brute than he, and caught sight of Ernie in the mirror behind the bar. Quick as a striking shoebie, he pulled a Bowie knife from his fur and threw it backwards over his shoulder just as Ernie fired. Well, in the chaos a newly opened bottle of finest Highland Park was smashed, and so I was positively raging and hoping that they had both inflicted deadly wounds on the other. As it happened, I was right, and I had the double task of disposing of the pair of them before morning. Let’s just say the Concrete Ship holds many secrets. Also, to this day I have a fine ermine-like two-thirds-sized fur cape. So it was not all bad.

Mark Kulkowitz at the Mad Batter, opened by his father Harry in 1976.
T
his is the March Hare issue — with all those Alice in Wonderland allusions, it made perfect sense to feature the Mad Batter, founded in 1976 and regarded as the inspiration for the restaurant revolution in Cape May. The Mad Batter and Carroll Villa were opened by Harry Kulkowitz, a World War Two veteran who was singled out in a speech by President Barack Obama during a 70th anniversary commemoration of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France three years ago. We chatted with Harry’s son, Mark, who now runs the operation along with his wife, Pam Huber. How did the Mad Batter name came about? My father was inspired by Alice and Wonderland, and also by his love of pancakes, waffles and French toast. When Harry bought the building in 1976, what where you doing? The plan was to teach English in New South Wales, Australia for two years. I was really looking forward to it — and to celebrate, I went bicycling in Europe for two months before I was going to leave. There, I met my best high school friend Bob Covelli in a beer garden in Munich, while he was on a weekend pass from his army unit in Gelnhausen. Bob said to me that if teaching didn’t work out I should join the army and see Europe. As it happens, my contract got cancelled — the Aussies had enough male teachers. So I signed up for three years. You’ve always described yourself as a hippie so how did your father’s military service influence your thinking? My father told me he would break my leg before he would let me fight in Vietnam. He felt like I did — that it was an immoral war. But after the war ended I was unsure of what to do — I was lost. The decision to join the “peacetime” army was influenced by the fact that my best English literature friend had enlisted because he had also reached a dead end in trying to find a teaching job. Plus, my father thought that enlisting and meeting

Like my father, I was in the signal corp and worked on sending and receiving unclassified and classified messages for the Third Armored Division. What happened after you returned to civilian life? I was discharged in October, 1978. I took a train to Kaiserstuhl in Germany, along the Rhine River and neighboring France to harvest wines with my friends and then bicycle around Europe. How did you end up in Cape May? My father had written me frequently while I was in the service. He wanted me to work with him in the hotel and restaurant. I visited for the first time, while on army leave. It’s funny because even though I went to high school in Philadelphia, no one knew about Cape May. The driving age was 16 and we would party in Atlantic City or Wildwood.Remember, the drinking age was 18 back then. How did you meet your future wife Pam? My sister Sigrid and Pam worked for my father when I came home and thought that Pam would be a great match for me. Pam did not know that Harry even had a son! When she saw me for the first time, at the Texas Avenue Co-op in my Boris Godunov Russian hat, she was intrigued… who was

“Even though I went to high school in Philadelphia, no one knew about Cape May. The driving age was 16 and we would party in Atlantic City or Wildwood. Remember, the drinking age was 18 back then.” — MARK KULKOWITZ, THE MAD BATTER this strange guy and why did Sigrid think we could be together? This was the summer of 1979. I’ve heard that both of you were occasionally fired by your father. Is that true? My father fired and rehired Pam at least three times. He was a taskmaster, a perfectionist, and not very sensitive to people. At the end of the year he was desperate for help and rehired her. I was never fired by my father. I left for two years and moved with Pam to Philadelphia. I was not coming back! Then he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. So you returned to Cape May. What was that like? Pam always reminds me about the first few years. Harry would tell her — remember, Mark married the business first!
I missed many, many family events — funerals, weddings, birthdays... the only time he thought it was okay not to work was when we went to a sporting event together! When did you take over the everyday running of the operations? After the first few years. My father was a showman and it was hard to follow in his footsteps. He was the total extrovert. He could talk to anyone... I can, too, but it took me years to go up to strangers because they were eating in our restaurant. Was the working relationship with your father difficult? Harry would be fine with a lot of my decisions — until he disagreed. Then the fun would begin. Harry was a hit-andmiss guy — you could serve 800 people and one person complained and he would read you the riot act. How do you and Pam divide the work? Pam has done it all, from housekeeping to waitressing, hosting, front desk. She worked through three pregnancies while fighting morning sickness. Her niche was the hotel. She had a great idea for colors, symmetry and putting things together on a shoestring. We inherited a couple beautiful Eastlake beds and dressers and scrounged for the rest in antique stores, flea markets and trips around the Mid-Atlantic for beds, fixtures and lights

for the hotel. Pam is the heart and soul of the place. She has always maintained a sense of family, fairness and goodness to others. In 2001 you paid $800,000 to buy a liquor license. How much of a gamble did that feel? The liquor license came to us through the old Shire, Chalfonte and then Congress Hall. At that point, it was a dream come true. This was the chance to make the property more of a onestop destination. Roll out of bed and have one of the best breakfasts, lunches of your life. The addition of liquor and the bar helped create the year-round business and vibe that we have. Would you do it again? Yes, it has worked out well. What are your thoughts on the $1500 liquor license bill that’s making its way through the New Jersey Senate? It would not be equitable for those of us who paid dearly for them, and it will make competition even harder. On the other hand, there should be some compromise to protect the haves and help the have-nots. So tell us about the new porch at the Mad Batter? The front porch is my Bridge on the River Kwai! Now that we are into the third generation of Huberwitzes it is fitting that this is the culmination of our lifetime achievement award. We are all very excited about the resurrection of our porch. The Batter has become the go-to music spot in town. Was that an accidental happening or part of a fiendish plan? As Joni Mitchell said, they paved parardise and put up a parking lot. The music is a reflection of the Batter — trying to keep a community together through song and spirit, since fewer and fewer people live here year-round. The music as well as monthly art shows are part of our vision and a way of keeping people involved. This is reminiscent of Cape May as I remember it in the ’80s — an artist community which had a more diverse and talented population. Your daughter Marta and son Kyle are very much involved now. What are their roles? Marta is rock steady and has been involved in the recreation of the hotel. She has received attention at two national bed and breakfast conferences on her repurposing of East Lake furniture, paints and wallpapers to bring the Carroll Villa Hotel to the present day — Victorian lace will not be found here. Kyle is in the direct line of schmoozers… Harry, Mark, Kyle. He and Mike Burke have created the Cheers bar of Cape May. Having 19 beers on tap — most of which are from New Jersey — is amazing! Are you still as involved every day? Yes, with the distinct distinction of having great people run the show for us — Kay, Lisa, Bruce, Mike, along with a cast of great people, have kept us on one of the longest extended restaurant runs in Cape May. That is our triumph. What’s your favorite dish at the Batter? And favorite cocktail? The Chesapeake Eggs Benedict with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and Mad Batter coffee. Cocktail would be a calvados with my WWII buddies, or a good rye, bourbon or scotch. Any other changes or improvements you’d like to make in the future? A couple more rooms need to be improved. The final push will be some bigger bathrooms. I want to reach the point where we have done the best we can with everything so we can say we tried. It still rankles me that you can please so many people — but there is always someone who just wants to complain for the hell of it! Just remember, Mickey Mantle struck out once or twice a game! Our business is about having fun and making connections. Your life won’t end if we don’t cook the eggs the way you want them. Finally, when you’re away from work, what’s your favorite thing to do in Cape May? I love to take my three dogs for a walk. When I am lucky, I can go with them to the magnesite plant and toward Davey’s Lake or Higbee Beach. Especially when I am accompanied by my wife along with my kids with their dogs. interview by jack wright

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s time for a good laugh!
he combination of cops and kids is comedy gold. From the little rascals of Our Gang tangling with Officer Murphy, to Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop assuring a tiny questioner that it’s “not a tumor,” to Burt Reynolds being redeemed by his small partner in Cop and a Half, the innocent child and the gruff police officer are a winning pair. Just think about how many videos go viral because a kid in a toy car is getting a “ticket.” The Cape May Police Department knows a winning formula when it sees one, so they are using a Comedy Night Social to benefit the local Police Athletic League (PAL). Good policing requires a playful sense of humor, and humor helps to foster a good relationship between police and children. As a New York City Police Commissioner named Arthur Woods discovered in 1914, communities are safer when children trust their local police force. Woods created a Play Streets campaign to give city children a little room to run around. The program had the added benefit of reducing tensions between
the police and the kids. That idea gave birth to PAL, a program of sports and activities designed to keep children away from crime. Cape May’s PAL provides guidance to local boys and girls in grades three through eight with five basketball teams. The PAL’s Comedy Night Social on March 18 raises money to support those teams, bringing gifted comedians to town. Robyn Schall likely has a special affinity for kids who need help. Before she was named a Top 5 Standout Comic by CBS, or appeared at Caroline’s, on the Howard Stern radio channels, or on
television, she was a little kid with braces on her legs “like Forrest Gump.” Joining Schall is Louis Ramey, who hosted three Comedy Central specials, appeared on The Tonight Show, and was a finalist on Last Comic Standing. He won Gilda’s LaughFest’s Favorite Clean Comedy Award. Audiences “complain” that this poised performer barely leaves time for you to catch your breath between jokes. Rounding out the ticket is J.J. Ramirez, the Latin Lunatic. Ramirez is a familiar face to fans who have seen his many television appearances and caught his shows at the Borgata and in New York City comedy clubs like Caroline’s and the Improv. The Comedy Night Social will be held at Cape May Convention Hall. Doors open at 7pm and the comedians begin at 8pm. Tickets are $40 plus a $3 facility fee. Visit capemay. com for tickets and information. While you’re in town, join the St. Paddy’s Polar Plunge on Saturday to benefit Family Promise of Cape May County. Dive into the ocean or stay dry with a pub crawl or road race. Visit carneysnj.com for more information.

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
e know all the big names from Oscar night, but what about the less celebrated films? There are several films from the short film category that deserve attention. As a film festival, we celebrate the short film, dedicating most of our schedule to this often neglected format. Having seen all the nominations for best animated short, let’s review them here. Blind Vaysha The story is simple: Vaysha was born with a unique eye disorder. Her one eye can only see into the past. Her other eye can only see into the future. When she looked at her parents, one eye would see them as children and the other eye as very elderly. Her town? One eye saw a developing small village, the other a futuristic metropolis. This chronological bipolar disease had its troubles. For example, when the young men in her town wanted to marry her, she could only see them as children or old men. This was a wonderfully allegorical animated short, and my favorite to win, though it did not.
Blind Vaysha tells a compelling story Borrowed Time My next favorite to win was this short. A sheriff stands at the edge of a cliff, dangerously close. His face is twisted with torment, and you can tell something is troubling him. Flashback to when he was a young teen, traveling with his father (who was at the time the sheriff). There is a pursuit of criminals and a horrific fall from that cliff. Could the straggly son save his father? Only time would tell. Pear Cider and Cigarettes This was my
least favorite short. It tried to be entirely too cool to its own detriment. Animated in film noir style, completely with detective style narrator, it takes us on a confusing, clichĂŠ of a ride. Pearl Her childhood home was a beloved hatchback. Playing guitar for tips, a single father plays in public places for spare change to keep the car (and the family) going. Eventually, her father sees that he must find a way to better provide for his daughter. He works hard and affords a humble home. She eventually becomes a teenager and starts out on her own. But ultimately she does not forget her dad who tried to provide so much. Piper This Disney Pixar short took home the Oscar. Is it amazing in its technique? Of course. Does it have wonderful storytelling? Yes. Did it deserve the top prize? Did the allpro US Olympic basketball dream team beat the pants off everyone else to win gold in 1992? Sure. But does that make it right? Check out these films at Oscar.go.com and give us your feedback here! Email capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My stepdaughter is in the process of a divorce. She has also found a new love and wants to visit us in Cape May with our threeyear-old granddaughter for the weekend. We don’t want to sound old-fashioned, but we are concerned about the sleeping arrangements. When she visited with her husband, the three slept in the same room. What’s the plan now, we wonder. I started to text her and ask, but we want to see how she handles the situation. What do you think, Answer Lady? — On Edge Dear On Edge The first question is whether or not they plan to sleep over. Perhaps they are actually planning a day trip. If they ARE staying over, the Answer Lady would prepare a bed or spare room for the boyfriend and make the
Wise answers to perplexing questions
sleeping arrangements a fait accompli. Most people will see the light and comply. To soften the blow, take them all to Oyster Bay for dinner and make sure you and your husband make the new beau feel welcome because your stepdaughter is obviously bringing him to get your approval. If you find you don’t like him, keep quiet. You can trash-talk him later. Dear Answer Lady My co-father-in-law joined our golf foursome last month. It struck us that although he isn’t that great, his score always is. Last
week he lost his ball in the woods and I went over to help him find it. As I approached, I saw him take a ball out of his pocket and throw it into the fairway. I pretended I didn’t see it. Outing him would oust him from the foursome and create a huge brouhaha with the family. But how can I ignore cheating? — Complicit Dear Complicit One question the Answer Lady has is — are you playing for money? Money does make his transgressions much more egregious. Nevertheless, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, you really cannot ignore it. It will manifest itself somewhere down the line. Look at this as a teaching moment. Simply snap a photo of him cheating and show it to him. Ask him if he would like you to buy him golf lessons from the golf pro at Cape May National. If he still persists, at the end of the round, when he’s marking his score card, publically correct him. Present him with a copy of the USGA Rules of Golf with the rule regarding “lost ball” circled in red. You can order a copy at Cape Atlantic Book Company.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his is the week pine warblers come to breed. These mustard-colored forest birds are the first of our songbird migrants. You may run into one in Cape May Point, but most birders head to Jake’s Landing where the pines flanking the drive provide good sightings. Not yet paired, you can count on newly arrived males to be in full song. The song translates as, “Hi, beautiful. Care to mix your genes with the biggest, burliest pine warbler in the forest? Name’s Setophaga pinus but you can call me Mr Right.” As the name suggests, these warblers are particularly partial to pines. Distinguished by their bold white wingbars and blurry streaks below, pine warblers are not as flamboyant and as many other warbler species but they ARE first. It will be two weeks before yellowthroated warbler arrives. Also aptly named, this flame throated bird occupies much the same forest habitat as pine warbler. So if you are wondering where all the beautiful birders are this week and next, check out Jake’s Landing Road and nearby Belleplain State Forest. They’ll be the ones
looking up. The butterfly folks, on the hunt for mourning cloak, will be scanning the sun warmed pavement. If the temperature gets into the 50s and you linger until late afternoon, you are almost certain to see red bats wheeling over Route 347. These hardy mammals winter locally and when warm days prompt flying insects to go aloft, red bats leave their snug cavities and snap up a little nutrition. If you can’t find the birders at Jake’s, head for Norbury’s Landing where at least one little gull has been hanging out with the flocking
Bonaparte’s gulls. Not hard to find. When the birds go aloft, just scan for the small one with black underwings. The underwings of adult Bonapartes are gray. Red-throated loons constitute another seasonal treat. Not yet in their maroon throated finery, these rapier-billed water birds are nevertheless vocal and frisky. One of the region’s hotspots is the Second Avenue Jetty in Cape May. Sorry to disappoint you but red-throated loons don’t yodel, they quack. The yodeler is the common loon, which more typically occur in back bays or well offshore. Sunset Lake in Wildwood often hosts a common loon or two and by March adult birds do typically show the black neck ring of breed birds. The smaller loon-like birds are called eared grebes, which may or may not yet be in breeding plumage. Great egrets and osprey should be in by St Patrick’s Day. You can almost set your calendar by them. So there you have it, the spring timetable as established by Ma Nature herself. The countdown to summer has begun. Laughing Gull? You’ll hear them any day now.
