How long have you been coming here? Since 1938, when I was only several months old.

Who are you normally with?

My family.

Favorite thing about Cape May? Cape May has been home to me for most of my life and my favorite thing about it remains all the beauty there is to be enjoyed here — on the beach and in the town.

Least favorite thing? The parking situation during the summer months. So much has been written about this problem that I have little to add. I do think that an attractively designed and landscaped parking garage would be of great help with the problem.

I feel certain that the everincreasing number of visitors to Cape May would only welcome one also.

Favorite restaurants? Merion Inn, Washington Inn, Sapore, Lucky Bones, Tisha’s, Lobster House — it’s very difficult to choose favorite restaurants as Cape May is so very lucky to have so many to offer.

Favorite places to stay? I’ve always been fortunate not needing to pay to sleep a night in Cape May, so I’m afraid I have little to contribute here.

If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Overbuilding and overcrowding.

This powerful thriller would be a great novel — except that, sadly, it is true.

Note: A film, starring Jessica Chastain, based on the book is out this week.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

he Elliotts are a trio from Australia who play what’s been described as upbeat 60-style pop. Having checked them out on YouTube, I’m excited to see the real thing, which I’ll get to do either this Friday night at Elaine’s or at Carney’s on Saturday.

I figure that if the Elliotts can be bothered to fly 9,500 miles to play in Cape May that we should make the effort to go see them. Sounds fair, right?

The Elliotts are easily the most-traveled of the performers who are turning up for this weekend’s Singer Songwriter Cape May, but they’re by no means the only reason you should get your butt into town on Friday or Saturday — or both. Singer Songwriter is one of my favorite events. On a weekend when, in previous years, Cape May was pretty dormant, the city bursts into life as around 150 musicians head from venue to venue, guitar cases in hand, with dreams of making a career in the music business — or, at least, making a decent hobby out of it.

The Chamber of Commerce of Greater

Cape May estimates that the event adds about 60% more business than would normally be the case for a March weekend.

It’s not just a festival — during the day, on Friday and Saturday, musicians attend sessions at Congress Hall where music professionals dish out advice on making a career out of playing music.

In all, 14 venues on the island (I love that Corinthian Yacht Club is one of them) will host musicians from all over the country (and, yes, Australia, too). There are also

four separate acts from Nashville, America’s home of music, which I found really cool.

Every year, founder and organizer John Harris wrangles two keynote performers — this year they are Jim Boggia and Jonatha Brooke. Boggia speaks and performs at Congress Hall on Friday, while Brooke does her thing on Saturday. Other than those keynote performances, every single event on Friday and Saturday night are free.

Check out the listings on pages 46 and 47 then either come up with an itinerary for you party — or simply glide from event to event, enjoying a drink, food, and being delighted way by some seriously good performers.

It’s also gladdening to see so many Cape May performers represented — I’m not sure this island has ever been so well served by the arts. Speaking of which, it’s only a month until another musical extravaganza, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, on April 20-21. More on that later.

See you around town — I’ll be the guy hobbling around with a big boot protecting my fractured leg.

Dish Of The Week Boy, did we search long and hard to find a dish that we could link to Bob Dylan. But we found nothing. Which probably explains why he’s always been so skinny. Maybe the dude just doesn’t eat. But he DID spend a lot of time in Manhattan, and one of the many things that place is famous for is... great pizza. Which brings us to the Boiler Room at Congress Hall, which serves up some good stuff from their brick oven. Our favorite is Soppressata and Capicola, topped with sweet soppressata, hot capicola, fig jam, rosemary, aged balsamic, red onion and goat cheese. It’s so good it’ll be going, going, gone (yes, that’s a Dylan track).

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

hard cane is gonna fall,” I said to Bob Dylan one night in The Brown Room. And it did, right on top of his annoying curly head. He had it coming, too, hogging the mic, and stopping those four tousled chaps from Liverpool from having a go. I’m not sure who they were, really, but they looked to be down on their luck, and the crowd needed cheering up after Dylan’s funereal offering. So down he went, with a perfect mirror image of the silver top of my walking cane imprinted on his temple, and so the young lads stepped up and started singing about the hallucinogenic properties of illegal drugs, which was very entertaining and all, and of course led to their being hustled into the back of a Paddy Wagon and driven to the city limits as soon as they were done.

I seem to recall pouring a restoring single malt down the unconscious Dylan’s throat, and helping him back on stage to restore gloomy order. I was told later that Dylan wrote a ditty about my corrective measure, but I didn’t investigate.

We had our Summer of Love here in Cape May, you see, and it was a mess. All those hippies running around fornicating and not washing. Dreadful people, and how they could go on and on about peace.

Looking back, we have had a generous share of musical talent in this fine city. I like to think we act as an incubator of greatness, and also a filter, where we encourage and elevate the greats and discourage the chaff, often through violent means.

Did you know, too, that Little Richard was born here? And also Duke Ellington?

And three of the Four Tops? They all played The Brown Room, though if memory serves, Little Richard limited himself to a cover of that Wildwood native Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World”, which he played 300 times until I set Young Albert on his ankles.

Lately, we have been less successful in nurturing talent. I let that Bieber upstart sing one note before chasing him along the beach, and we did not recover from that vulgar Madonna parading her wares here. I did, though, admire her ability to cuss like a sailor, though did not appreciate being called a variety of names that I cannot repeat, all because I suggested she don a cardigan for the sake of decency. I think from now on we will stick to barber’s quartets.

iven that this is the weekend that Singer Songwriter Cape May blows into town, we’ve made this the Bob Dylan issue. In recent years, Cape May has been blessed by a growing local music movement which likely has its roots in the Open Mic nights at the old Pilot House, hosted by Barry Tischler. That scene has since moved to the Mad Batter, where any night of the week you’re likely to be serenaded by some of the area’s most talented musicians. One of those people is Mike, aka MQ, Murphy, who pays the bills by doing carpentry work and then gets to strum the guitar for fun, usually with The Squares, a trio that also includes J.M. Kearns and Debra Donahue.

MQ, you’ve become one of the leading lights of Cape May’s informal singer-songwriter movement. When and where was the first time you got your guitar and performed for the good people of this town? That was probably at the Open Mic that Barry Tischler used to host at the Pilot House.

Had you performed live anywhere else before that? I think I had insinuated myself into a gig that J.M. Kearns and Barry Tischler were doing at the Cape May Marlin and Tuna Club. J.M. and Barry were very gracious and patient.

When did you first pick up a guitar? I bought my first guitar at a pawn shop in Philadelphia in 1964. I was 13 years old.

Did you get any lessons or self-taught? I’m mostly self taught.

I got some beginner lessons from a college student when I first started — a little bit of finger-picking, “Kumbaya” and that sort of thing. Started playing electric guitar in 1965 and just learned from friends. Played in rock bands in high school and college.

Who were your musical heroes growing up? The usual suspects — Clapton, Hendrix, Duane Allman, Buffalo Springfield.

Page 40 Fell in love with the sound of Jim Messina’s Telecaster on the first Loggins and Messina album and I bastardized my Gibson SG guitar by putting a telecaster bridge pickup on it.

Where did you grow up? Philadelphia — the University City section. As a kid I used to love listening to bands playing at fraternity parties in the neighborhood.

How did you end up in Cape May? I had spent every summer in Cape May Point when I was a kid. When I graduated from college without any kind of well-thoughtout plan I moved here to be an artist. I had a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a place to stay for the first winter.

So how did that go? During that first year out of college it didn’t take long to realize that my art wasn’t covering the bills so I got a job in a machine shop. Then I drove a cab. Then I was a night-shift baker at Dunkin’ Donuts. Unloaded fishing boats down at the docks. Then I was a short order cook and then a breakfast cook — at The Mad Batter. There’s a rhythm to kitchen work that I failed to latch onto so when a friend offered me work driving nails I went for it and that turned out to be a good fit.

Been doing carpentry for over 40 years now.

That would be a safe assumption.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? That would be Woodstock in 1969.

An amazing experience.

And what’s the one gig you would dearly love to have seen, but didn’t? The Who at Woodstock. I slept through their set.

How/when did the Mad Batter become rock central in Cape May? The fact is that Mark Kulkowitz, the owner of the Batter, is a big music fan. If the Mad Batter is a hub of the music scene in Cape May it’s got a lot to do with him. I’ve been hosting the Open Mic for going on six years — somewhere

along the line the Mad Batter started hosting live music seven nights a week. I think that a lot of local musicians have gotten to take advantage of the Open Mic to try out material, get a feel for playing in front of an audience — and the audiences at the Batter are very supportive. The music community here is amazing.

Tell us about how you came to christen the Bastard Sons of Levon Helm, now known as the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey? They came in to the Open Mic a couple of years ago — Max, Dylan and Chris. I hadn’t heard of them. I’m not sure if they’d named themselves at that point but they really had a great sound and their camaraderie was charming and infectious.

They had such a natural feeling for the type of music — it’s a genre that has come to be called Americana in recent years, kind of a melding of folk, country and rock. Their choice of material was impressive, stretching from current artists like Shakey Graves back to The Band, and they were writing really good songs of their own. Somehow it almost seemed like they’d been transported from Levon Helm’s barn in New York State and dropped right down here in Cape May. And how do you feel about the fact that

they had to make a name change after hearing from Levon Helm’s family? I think it was really cool that they got a letter from the family. It meant that they were on the radar.

Does Q in MQ actually mean anything, or is it just to make you sound cool? Does it sound cool? My middle name is Quinn, after a cousin who was a Jesuit missionary. I decided to use the initials when Facebook came along — if I’d signed up as Mike Murphy, it would’ve been Mike Murphy 684 or something. It’s a very common name.

What’s your opinion of Singer Songwriter Cape May? What does it bring to the town?

I think it’s a great thing. I love seeing all the musicians in town, hustling from venue to venue with guitar and fiddle cases. It’s a whirlwind twoday thing that brings some real road-tested veterans here to impart stories and experience at the keynote speeches and panels. The attendees get to ask questions, shake hands with their heroes — immersion is an overused word, but it’s a good dip.

Have you performed in it, or any plans to? I’ve played in the last four or five. I decided to take this year off because I haven’t really gotten any new material finished.

How many original songs have you written? I think I’ve got about a dozen that I consider finished — and probably 10 or 15 more that are in various stages of disrepair. I am a bona fide late bloomer — I just started writing songs a few years ago. I kick myself for not starting a long time ago, but I probably wasn’t ready back then.

Do you always prefer singing your own songs to covers, or does it depend? Good question — I like both. There are songwriters whose work I love — John Gorka, John Prine, Lyle Lovett. When you work on learning their songs you’re studying the masters of the art — their wordplay, their melo-

dies. Hopefully you learn some things that you get to apply in your own work.

You were part of a tribute concert at the Harbor Theater in Stone Harbor recently. How did that go down? That was really fun. I performed with The Squares — the trio that I’m a member of with J.M. Kearns and Debra Donahue.

Is that a good venue? A very cool venue — it holds about 250 people, has comfy seats in a nice theatre-like setting — and you can order beer and wine! What’s not to like?

Do you wish Cape May had something similar? Or is Convention Hall something that could be used more effectively, do you think, for gigs like this? Convention Hall is a larger venue — well suited to the larger shows that have been getting booked. I’ve got to do a shoutout to the First Presbyterian church on Decatur Street. They have a wonderful series of concerts that benefit the Food Closet of Cape May County — it is a really nice, intimate venue with great acoustics and sight lines. I got to play there once a few years ago and really loved it.

When we watch TV shows, things are always cooler when scenes are filmed in slow motion, with a great soundtrack. What would be the single track that defined you?

The one you’d like to hear if you were moving toward the camera in slow motion? That’d be “Dear Mr Fantasy” by Traffic.

I have wished I could write a film — sort of along the lines of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, but a bit darker — about someone who fantasized perhaps a bit too much. That song over the opening and closing credits would be perfect.

We always ask this question… what are you most looking forward to doing in Cape May this summer? It might be nice to jump in the ocean. I manage that from time to time.

And I always look forward to playing as much music as I can.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Singer Songwriter Cape May

ape May will be alive with the sound of music during the tenth annual Singer Songwriter conference this weekend — March 24 and 25.

Some people are built to be be great singers — your singing voice is a genetic trait having to do with brain function, skull shape and vocal cord structure. That’s why there are so many singing families, like the Carters, the Osmonds, Sister Sledge, Hanson, and the Von Trapps. But singers can lose the gift. Just as people born with perfect pitch can lose the skill unless they have music lessons by age five, singers need practice to make the most of their voices. That may be why so many great singers come out of a gospel background. In church, all singers are encouraged to join in, and young singers get a lot of unself-conscious practice.

There is some good news for the pitchy among us. For one thing, our fellow humans are more tolerant of poor singing than of poor performance on a musical instrument. Enthusiasm counts for something.

And almost anyone can learn to improve her

singing — only 2% to 5% of Americans are actually tone deaf — meaning they can’t tell whether or not they are hitting the right note.

The rest of us who sing poorly — up to 62% of non-musicians — know we sing poorly.

That’s why we sing out loud in the car or in the shower, where no one can judge.

Knowing we stink can also help us to improve. As Julie Andrews taught her charges in The Sound of Music, it’s best to start at the very beginning, singing scales like Do-Re-Mi and mimicking a fine singer who can correct

our mistakes. Sadly, those of us without a natural gift, who most need the practice, are least likely to take lessons. We do, however, make excellent audiences.

The singers who come to Cape May for the Singer Songwriter conference make the most of their training. They are professionals, some from as far away as Australia and some from Cape May County, who make their living in music. They will be in town for two days to learn more about their art and their business.

For two nights, they will show off what they have learned, with 150 musical acts offering free performances in 10 venues all over town. The schedule of performances is available at sscapemay.com (and on pages 46, 47). Don’t try to see them all. You can either move from venue to venue, following artists you think you’ll like, or park yourself in one venue and listen to a series of performances.

uess what time of year it is? It’s time for the 17th Annual Cape May Film Festival! Wait, what is that you say?

Isn’t that festival in November?

Well, not any more. We’ve decided to spring CMFF from its frigid November digs and place it in with the tulips.

CMFF17 takes place on Saturday, April 8 this year (that’s only a few weeks away!).

Because of the short time frame from the last festival, we will be hosting a retrospective of films — a best of the past several years!

We’ve invited filmmakers to join us so you can expect the same energy you’ve come to expect from CMFF. Here is a breakdown of just some of the films we’ll be screening this year...

A Pirate’s Life What does it take to be a pirate? To be an appropriate pirate, the kid needs: the right clothing, to find a way to sail the seas, and of course treasure to bury. The last part may not be so easy — but he has a plan!

Every other weekend I make meals to get her through the week. My sisters look in on her every day, but I can’t — I have a fulltime job and three children. So, this is my way of helping out. Last week I went to the house to discover my mother had given her pots to my sister — who doesn’t cook. When I asked her where the meatballs and sauce were that I put in the freezer, she told me she gave them to my other sister because she felt sorry for her since she lives alone and doesn’t cook. He’s not that clever and I could certainly get my hands on his phone if chose to. But should I? Is that a breach of trust? Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ild birds do not need our handouts. They are perfectly able to survive on their own, but you should know that offering food to wild birds will help them through stressful times. Spring is a particularly stressful time because natural food stocks have been depleted by a winter’s dependence. Plus birds are striving to maintain their health as breeding season approaches.

But the truth is that I feed birds less for the survival edge it gives them than the entertainment it provides. A steady stream of birds attend the feeder just outside the window. Their common interest is the black oil sunflower seed I dispense. But what makes the endeavor so entertaining is the array of feeding styles the various species employ.

The chickadees, titmice and whitebreasted nuthatches are snatch-and-bolt artists, heading for a protected place to hammer away at the husk. Blue jays arrive two and three at a time, commander the feeder and bolt down unshelled seeds one

after the other. They’ll stay until a squirrel usurps the treasure.

Jays have also been known to cry wolf to clear the feeder of birds. In my neighborhood, wolves are scarce so sentries spend most of their watch time looking out for the neighborhood Cooper’s hawk. Jays are just about the perfect meal package for Cooper’s hawks, though their preference is for mourning doves that cluster beneath the feeder. Me? I don’t take sides, content to let Ma Nature work matters out and bolstered

by the understanding that mourning doves have a high reproductive capacity. Even after a winter of working our feeders, the Cooper’s hawk has not even dented the local dove flock’s reproductive capacity.

I consider the hawk just one more bird coming to the feeder. Squirrels are another matter. The furry-tailed tree rat can break a modest bird seed budget and while one sits of the feeder, my feathered minions go hungry.

Luckily our spaniel McKenzie has volunteered for squirrel duty — she throws herself against door, squirrel flees, Mackie Mack (aka siphon gut) gets treat.

With the squirrel looking on the feeder is quickly inundated with house finch who tend to use their weight of numbers to commandeer the feeder and munch seed until they are satiated. Finches are not fastidious feeders and I believe it is the finches’ dribbled seed bits that attract the doves beneath the feeder.

And now you must excuse me, there’s a squirrel hogging the feeder and Mackie is on break.
