How long have you been coming here? I started visiting Cape May as a young child with my parents when we would stay in Wildwood Crest and come over for the day. As I got older, my friends and I would rent a house in Cape May. Now my husband and I have been renting the same house for 11 years. We got married in Cape May on August 22,2015. Who are you normally with? My husband, though sometimes my mother, friends or family members will come and stay with us. Favorite thing about Cape May? Everything! It’s so greath that you can walk or bike everywhere. There are tons of dining choices, and they are all great. I also like the feeling that when I come to Cape May I’m not in New Jersey, even though I am. Least favorite thing? It is three hours away from home. Favorite restaurants? Merion Inn, Sapore Italiano, The Pier House, Oyster Bay. Favorite places to stay? The house on Hughes Street that we rent, Congress Hall and The Star Inn. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I miss some of the unique shops that were in the Washington Street Mall and wish there would be more. It is nice to do shopping and buy items I cannot find at home that remind me of Cape May.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
bum. boat
A small boat used to ferry supplies to ships moored away from the shore. Originally referring to a scavenger’s boat, the name comes from the combination of the Dutch word for a canoe— boomschuit.
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. His works are few, (upcoming recommendation for his latest), but astonishing in their portrayal of historical society. It’s 1937 and Katey Kontent chances upon Tinker Grey in a Greenwich Village, New York City jazz bar. What follows is a vivid telling of the complex relationships between the working class and the upper echelons of New York society.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
he issue of a parking garage in Cape May is controversial. This is obvious to anyone who has read social media comments on the subject or — gasp! — spoken to a person about the issue in a bar or a restaurant or the street — apparently some people still DO communicate this way. It’s a controversial subject for three reasons... 1. People are frustrated by how difficult it is to find a space in Cape May in the summer; 2. People hate getting tickets. It’s funny how the imposition of a $35 fee can send some people into a tailspin disproportionate to the financial penalty, much as the $5 late fee on returning a video to Blockbuster did back in the last century; 3. Although lots of people desperately want to see a solution to these problems, other people hate the idea of a garage being slapped down in historic Cape May. Which is why I am wondering how residents and visitors will react to the plan being hatched by a group of French-Canadian business from Montreal. Their plan? To take over the old Beach Theater and construct a parking garage on a
similar scale to Convention Hall across the road, although two stories higher. In all, there would be five levels of parking, accommodating 600 spaces. They also want to incorporate a bowling alley at basement level, retail and a food court. I saw the architectural drawings and the retail includes such luminaries as Gap, Banana Republic and Anthropologie. The outside of the building would look somewhat similar to Convention Hall. There are 500 windows, presumably to lend a maritime look (portholes!). The top floor is half
open and topped by a huge pergola, bearing a giant dolphin sculpture, which gives the overall effect of there being a huge roof garden up there, even though there is space for 100 cars. I spoke to the leader of the group, Avril Plaisante, by phone on Monday. She and her family have been visiting Cape May for 30 years, and her parents were regular visitors before her. She has had experience in parking garage development, having been involved in the erection of two similar structures in Montreal in the last 10 years. “Some people may not like the idea,” she told me, “but parking is a huge problem in Cape May, and it’s only going to increase. People have to stop fighting the inevitable. Our plan is for a beautiful building which blends in, but which also serves a very useful function.” City council members have seen the drawings, which are expected to be discussed at the next meeting. One council member, who didn’t want to go on the record, said he would welcome such a project. “It’s ambitious, but it could give the area a real shot in the arm.” Watch this space for more details.

Dish Of The Week What do you get when you cross a chili pepper, steam shovel and a Chihuahua? A hot, diggety dog. Get it? And where can you get this kind of humor, as well as delicious leaner wiener you say? That’s right, the one and only Hot Dog Tommy’s, serving some of the tastiest fare in town in their iconic hole-in-the-wall. Their famous tornado dog which is loaded with mashed potatoes, chili, shredded cheddar cheese, salsa, banana peppers and sour cream is one bad dog (in a good way.) Trust us, one bite and you’ll be begging for more. So make a date with the funny man in the wiener hat this weekend because Hot Dog Tommy’s is opening early. April Fool! They don’t open until May 19. Sucker!
BEER OF THE WEEK White Caps Style: Double IPA ABV: 7.7% Cape May Brewing Company Hazy and juicy, devoid of bitterness and yet bursting out of the glass with tropical fruit flavors. A softer mouth feel with a pillowy head and good body, featuring Mosaic and Citra hops and brewed with a hefty portion of oats and wheat in the grain bill.

WINE OF THE WEEK Villa Sparina 2015 Gavi $14.99 from Sunset Liquors, 106 Sunset Boulevard A great classic obtained from the Cortese grapes, this white wine is lightly oaked and boasts peach, apple, butter and spice flavors. It is lively, rich and very unique. Pairs well with creamy dishes, seafood, and shellfish.
Cocktail Of The Week It’s safe to say that most people have heard of the Tom Collins. It’s made with gin, lemon juice and soda water. Pretty boring, eh? But what most folks probably don’t know is that the cocktail began as a practical joke and became so popular that it was dubbed The Great Tom Collins Hoax of 1874. Here’s how it went — A man would approach his friend at the bar and ask him, “Have you seen Tom Collins?” The friend would then say, “I don’t know a Tom Collins.” The man would then tell the friend that a Tom Collins was talking badly about him at a nearby bar, leaving the friend furiously stomping off to find this dastardly devil. But there was no Tom Collins... and from that the cocktail was born.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
detest fools, and count April Fools among the worst of them. It was an April Fool’s joke that landed us with so many Irish and Scotchmen: some wag, possibly F. Scott Fitzgerald, posted an advertisement in The Irish Times, saying that Cape May was in dire need of red-headed giants who would come and work in the shamrock mines; and that there was a natural Scotch Whisky spring in the hills. A month later, whole boatloads of ginger fools arrived, and wouldn’t leave. Did we learn from this? We did not. For a few years later, a newspaper ran a “spoof” article on Cape May’s remarkable simian and ursine bartenders, and before you knew it, we had bear and monkeys in every hostelry. Admittedly, they proved very useful. Who knew that an orangutan could serve four drinks at once? Of course, we have not been above using this second-most annoying of dates (Thanksgiving is of course the most irritating: the sight of hundreds of unwelcome exiled sons and daughters of Cape May
arriving in town to tell tall tales of the city and to exclaim loudly how small the place looks, now, drives me to distraction) for our own ends: not so long ago, when the city IQ level dropped below genius for the first time (you thought that those incisive conversations I have with you when I meet you on the street are just idle? It’s part of our drive to keep Cape May the official Smartest City in All of America) and we realized that we needed to persuade the less smart of our inhabitants to relocate. So the Cape May Diamonds April Fool was launched, and

sure enough, every year a few dozen of the most gullible are seen shrieking with delight on the beach, and then head off to spend their fortune in Wildwood. There is no net loss: both us and Wildwood become all the smarter for the slow transfer of population. And, of course, once in a while the April Fool becomes true: that time we said that from henceforth a dog could be elected mayor of the city, Young Albert happened to read the announcement, and stood on a platform that was anti-cat and pro-bellyrub, plus cookies for everyone. He won by a landslide, and we had no option but to allow it, as he had lawyered up with a team of real slickers from Philly who used our article as defense. Of course, he became a truly dreadful dictator, who used Animal Farm as a blueprint rather than a warning, and in the end was displaced by a coup engineered by the chickens. It was short and bloody and ushered in our decade of Clucking Dictators. All this is true, I swear by the blood of a hundred Irishmen.

t’s the April Fool issue, so we figured we should talk to a business owner who’s ALL about the laughs. Susan Tischler and Barry Tischler (her ex-husband and current business partner — see, even that’s funny) run Just For Laughs on Washington Street. The place is full of humor high and low (okay, probably mostly low). We chatted with Susan about humor, politics and her favorite April Fool’s lark. When and how did you have the idea for the store? When we opened Kaleidoscope, a women’s clothing store, we started selling humorous gift items by a company called Anne Taintor. Women loved them. So, when the store next to us became available, we thought, “Hey, people need a good laugh. Let’s go for it.” And we did. Sense of humor is a subjective thing. When you are buying merchandise for your store, are you following your own sense of humor or are you trying to cover all the bases? Both. Our store managers, Laura Garrett and Aaron Menkins, are tremendously helpful in picking out items they know will appeal to our customers. I have to censor Aaron from time to time. He gets a little too bawdy. Do men or women tend to be your most enthusiastic customers? Women a little more than men, but we try to strike a balance. In last year’s political climate, our election humor crossed all boundaries. You’ve got some cheeky stuff in there. Has anyone ever been insulted by anything? Obama toilet paper. Liberals always get a little huffy. I would have sold Mitt Romney toilet paper, but he proved so bloody boring, the wholesalers couldn’t even get it together to manufacture any. One woman got on social media and ripped us a new one. I’m a lifelong Democrat, but I should have had both sides or not sold it. What’s your most risqué item? “I can’t believe I f***ed that guy” hand sanitizer. “Maybe you touched your genitals” and “I just shit in

Page 42 the woods” hand sanitizers are popular. Do you have any of the merchandise at home? Aaron, my boyfriend, wears, “I disagree but I respect your right to be stupid” T-shirt. And last night I rolled out the “Did we forget the children at baggage claim… again?” cocktail napkins. What’s your best-selling item? Socks, especially the “F**k this s**t” socks. They are articularly popular with older ladies. What’s the best April Fool that’s ever been played on you? My manager at the time, the late Nancy Beck, whom I was TOTALLY dependent on, told me she had to hand in her notice. She didn’t want to quit but it wasn’t working out. Finally, when I started to walk away to go cry, she yelled, “April Fool!” Oy! And what’s the best one you’ve ever done? I invited my trivia mate Steve Mullock over to the house for cocktails. Steve drinks Captain Morgan spiced rum and ginger ale. When he got to the house, I told him I bought a bottle just for him. It was one of those little airplane bottles. I loved the look on his face. Got anything planned for this week? Yes, I think I’ll tell my Happy Hour friends I’m picking up the check. Who’s the funniest person you know? Other than me? My best friend Bea Pessagno. What’s the best clean joke you know? A

“ My then-husband and current business partner, Barry Tischler, owned a vacuum repair store. We started selling weird stuff at flea markets. Lamps with Elvis heads on them, and cobra ashtrays.” — SUSAN TISCHLER OF JUST FOR LAUGHS nice, calm and respectable lady goes into the pharmacy, walks up to the pharmacist, looks straight into his eyes, and says, “I would like to buy some cyanide.” The pharmacist asks, “Why in the world do you need cyanide?” The lady replies, “I need it to poison my husband.” The pharmacist’s eyes go big and he exclaims, “Lord have mercy! I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband! That’s against the law! I’ll lose my license! They’ll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!” The lady reaches into her purse and pulls out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife. The pharmacist looks at the picture and replies, “Well now. That’s different. You didn’t tell me you had a
prescription.” How did you end up in retail? I was a journalist in Wheeling, West Virginia. My then-husband and current business partner, Barry Tischler, owned a vacuum repair store in Weirton. We started selling weird stuff at flea markets on weekends. Classy stuff like velvet paintings and lamps with Elvis heads attached to them. Oh, and cobra ashtrays made of plaster of Paris. How did you end up in Cape May? Our flea market ventures led us to Rio Grande. A few other “craftsmen” set up in what was then the Rio Mall for the summer. We would go to Cape May on our off hours and liked it so much we decided to open a store called The Zoo Company in 1980. Everything had an animal theme — oven mittens, stuffed animals, kitchen items with an owl or a frog on them. It was cute and people liked it. This summer what would you really like to do that you have never gotten around to? I seem to miss so many events in the summer like the Summer Concert series at Convention Hall and the Fourth of July celebration at Congress Hall and the wonderful events MAC holds. I’d really like to be a tourist one summer. Maybe even go to the beach. Isn’t that what tourists do? Go to the beach? That’s what I hear anyway.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get ready to be foolish
on’t let April 1 sneak up on you. Get ready for some foolishness on your next trip to Cape May. We all need, as Chuckles the Clown said, “A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants.” Harmless fun — seltzer doesn’t stain, after all — is good for us, boosting our immune systems and exercising our bodies. Humor eases pain, boosts creativity and builds team spirit. Leaders who take themselves too seriously get cranky. Pharaohs and kings hired jesters, or fools, to lighten things up. These “licensed truth tellers” hung around the court, sporting distinctive clothing and, often, a shaved head, to make jokes, juggle, dance or do tricks. Only the fool could speak the ugly truth — legend says a French jester once boasted about the swimming skills of his countrymen to inform the king that they had lost a naval battle — but it was a dangerous job. Henry VIII’s fool, Sexton, lost his position, and nearly his head, for making jokes about Anne Boleyn. His replacement, Will Somers, played it safe and lasted.
In America, presidents have traditionally known how to take a joke. “A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership,” said Dwight D. Eisenhower. Comedian Bob Hope mocked 11 presidents, saying, “As long as it’s funny, you can say anything.” The White House Correspondents’ Dinner has poked fun at presidents since Calvin Coolidge attended in 1921. In 1976, President Gerald Ford pretended to stumble as he rose to speak. First Lady Laura Bush teased her husband in 2005. President Obama laughed along with jokes about his
ears and his birth certificate, but President Trump will not attend this year’s event. Cape May is a great place to practice your foolishness, and April is a great time. Visit the Toy Shop and arm your crew for a water pistol battle on the beach, or pick up a new frisbee to practice with plenty of room. (Easter Bunny tip — one parent takes the kids to the Toy Shop while the other goes to the Fudge Kitchen. Personalized eggs are always a hit.) Or, channel your inner mad scientist —pick up some Mentos and Diet Coke from CVS. Get enough for each person to have a turn — the grownups who think they don’t want to do it will want to do it. Pick up borax and glue to make your own slime, or plastic wrap to sabotage the toilet. Treat a toddler to some chunky toys or bubbles from Whale’s Tales. Pick up a joke book at Cape Atlantic Books and practice your knock-knock delivery on a groaning ten year old. Treat a tooserious adult to a book, like “Fool on the Hill,” by Matt Ruff. Spin on your stool while you get a sundae at Dellas or Stewart’s. Giggle. Next week: Cape May Film Festival

ape May Film Festival 2017 will be here in a week, and we could not be more excited. Curated and hosted by film instructor Stefan Prosky, a retrospective of the past 17 years has been pulled together for this first spring edition of CMFF. Last week, we presented the first half of films — here are the remainder. The Kiddush Man A fidgety young boy in a synagogue finds the price of wandering around during services. He’s unable to sit still, but when he begins to explore quiet spots where he thinks he cannot be seen, his ear is pulled in reprimand. In the end, he is the one who will be offering a reprimand of his own. Shoebox Redhead With his best friend and a sardonic clown, a heartbroken Matt tries to uncover the mystery of an old Polaroid instant camera. What makes it a mystery is the pictures that appear of a redhead whose engaging smile haunts him. The Art of Theatrical Ushery A vehement movie theater usher battles insubordinate movie-goers. Save us the aisle seat — or else!
A scene from The Kiddush Man Cartilage Shopping carts get their revenge. “The day they push back!” Director Andrew Henry, who was my co-author on this column many years ago, will be on hand to answer questions. The Indescribable Nth A boy is born with his heart inside a snow globe. Disney animator Steve Moore created this award-winning short. Pink & Blue The issue of teenage pregnancy is explored in this award-winning short film made in one of our early Young Filmmakers workshops.
Plane Face One man’s quest to finish shaving in a surreal world. The film was written, shot, and edited in 24 hours for the 2008 Brooklyn Film Race, where it won many awards. Say Can You See An unlikely witness to the tragedy of 9/11. Wonderfully animated, the story is unique and moving. When you support the Cape May Film Festival, you are encouraging a host of filmmakers who are inspired to create unforgettable stories. Through it all, they don’t skimp on storyline and they don’t sacrifice on plot. And all on a shoestring budget mostly supplied by friends, family, or school. These stories are as original as you’d see in theaters (actually, more so when you cosider all the “re-imagined” work being touted as “new”. New CHIPs and Baywatch movies — really?). Join us on Saturday, April 8 at the West Cape May Borough Hall to see creative, intelligent, outstanding films that have withstood the test of time, and meet a few of the filmmakers. Visit capemayfilm.org to see a complete list of films.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My sister became a widow two years ago. The four of us — my wife and I, as well as my late brother-in-law and my sister, were inseparable. We vacationed with our kids, spent holidays together and loved spending summers in Cape May. We rent the same house every summer. Now my sister has met someone she found online and my wife and I cannot stand him. He is rude, obnoxious and antagonistic. We’ve avoided get-togethers on the pretext of being busy but what do we do about summer? We cannot bear the thought of living with this guy and having our summer ruined. – Cornered Dear Cornered You are feeling protective of your sister and you must level with her. Perhaps her
Wise answers to perplexing questions
loneliness prevents her from seeing him in the same light. The Answer Lady presumes you and your sister split the cost of the house rental. You are going to have to tell her that her new beau is not welcome and be prepared to pay for the rental yourself or look for another place. Life is too short to miss a cocktail at the Beach Shack because the chemistry is wrong with this newcomer. Dear Answer Lady We have a women’s book group which meets at my house. We recently invited
a newcomer and were aghast when she brought her husband. His presence disrupts the flow of the group, which is not, by any means, an excuse for male bashing, although he maintains it is by virtue of the fact that the books are written primarily by women. A couple of the members are intimidated by him and are threatening to stop coming. Others are prepared to go toe-to-toe with him. What should we do? – Booked Up Dear Booked Up The Answer Lady lived through a similar incident. The leader of our group simply changed the time and day of the meeting without notifying said couple. They got the hint and that was that. Why not take this time to change the venue? E.M. Hemingway’s, for example, would be a good place to meet. It’s large enough to accommodate a group and have a discussion without it being disruptive. Also, they have a conference room. Bonus, they have a liquor license. Cape May Winery is another lovely venue for a book group. Once the new couple knows they have to spend money, they will be gone.

Bird Droppings
V
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ery few New Jersey residents remember a time when Canada Geese were rare. But once, half a human lifetime ago, it was an uncommon winter resident and unknown as a breeder. This point was brought home to me March 5 as I took a walk through the local park and noted that the wintering birds were already paired and a new breeding season was upon us. Time for geese to go about the process of making more geese. Back in 1965, I recall the first pair of Canada Geese to take up residency in the ponds behind my parents’ house. Their nest failed but that did nothing to stem the tide. Canada Geese became a common breeding species throughout the state, forming a non-migratory population separate from those birds that nest in Canada and spend the winter here, much to the consternation of golfers and those who are tasked with maintaining the grassy integrity of municipal parks and corporate lawns. Birds don’t typically engage in population expansions unless the environment is altered to meet their needs. This is precisely what
happened with Canada Geese. When New Jersey was mostly forest, it was inhospitable to birds that like nice grassy expanses pocked with lakes or ornamental ponds. We altered the habitat and the birds saw this as the equivalent to humans putting up welcome signs. So when golf club grounds keepers call and ask how they can discourage geese, I tell them. “Don’t cut the grass. In a decade or two, as a result of vegetative succession, the grass will give way to trees and you’ll have an embryonic forest where you used to have fairway,” which,
unless you are Phil Mickleson, may make your short game challenging, but it will absolutely rid the course of geese. Golfers here should count their blessings. In southern and western states, Mississippi Kite have taken a liking to nesting in the tall trees flanking fairways. Following up on a ball hooked into the trees is sure to trigger the ire of nesting kites who will express their displeasure by stooping at your head as you search for your ball. While you chances of being struck are slim, a territorial kite trying to relieve you of you cap can really throw your game off. I only mention this because Mississippi Kite was found breeding for the first time in New Jersey just last summer. What can be done about this potential new hazard? Learn to hit the fairway. It’s not the bird’s fault that golf courses are ideal nesting places for kites. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry too much about kites. Deer ticks are a far greater hazard. Kites don’t carry Lyme disease. And geese? Just get out of your golf shoes before walking across the living room carpet when you get home.

ATLANTIS is an American Staffordshire terrier who is new to the shelter. She came in as a stray and noone has come looking for poor Atlantis. She is a very social, sweet girl who knows how to sit and is learning some leash manners. Atlantis would be best in a home with older children. Stop by the shelter today and give this lady a loving home!
ODEN is a young American bulldog mix who everyone at the kennel stops and fusses over! However somehow, Oden is still looking for his forever home. Although Oden is still young, he already knows how to sit when asked and is very well-mannered. All he needs is a patient companion and Oden will become your new, loyal best friend!
WONKA is a labrador retriever and American staffordshire terrier mix male who was named Wonka after his chocolate coat. He came into the shelter as a stray and sadly noone has come looking for him. Wonka would be best as the only pet in the household. If you’re looking for something sweet, adopt Wonka today!

Oswald is the sweetest boy and a glutton for belly rubs! He would gladly roll over and let you rub his belly all day if you wanted. Stop by the shelter and meet Oswald today!
PATCH is a big boy who is set in his ways. He would prefer being the only pet in the household so he can soak up all the love you have to give. Patch enjoys spending his days lazing on laps and listening to stories. So, if you’re looking for a guy who knows exactly what he wants, then Patch is your perfect match! Adopt today!
HILLARY is a nice little girl who loves to be pet. Although sometimes she likes her space and independence, she will let you know when shes not craving attention.
