If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.

MELANIE THIEL BANGOR, PA

How long have you been coming here? Since 1967 when my brother started attending Shelton College on the beachfront in Cape May. Who are you normally with? My husband and two daughters. We visit my brother and sister-in-law as often as we can. They live in Cape May year-round.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

turt. le. back

An arched projection over the upper deck of a ship at the bow and sometimes at the stern for protection in heavy seas

Favorite thing about Cape May? Of course the beach is amazing and so peaceful. But our very favorite thing is having quality time with our family. My brother and sister–inlaw are amazing people and we count the days to each visit. Least favorite thing? The fact that we do not live closer and the town needs lots more bike racks. We always try to bike everywhere. Favorite restaurants? Avalon Coffee every morning for bagels and the Lobster House for fresh seafood to cook at the house. Favorite places to stay? My brother and sister-in-law’s house, of course! If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I wouldn’t change anything about Cape May, I would change us… we would be living here now and not waiting until we retire which is our plan. Give us seven more years!

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... The Brooklyn Nobody Knows: An Urban Walking Guide by William B. Helmreich. Here the author re-walks the great borough of Brooklyn — 816 miles in all — and draws on hundreds of conversations with residents he meets along the way to provide a colorful portrait of every one of the 44 neighborhoods that make up Brooklyn. You will wish you walked alongside him. Beautiful and compelling.

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

J

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

udging by the condition of local roads these past few weeks, bicycle riders (especially men) should be investing in some extra-comfortable saddles for their summer rides around the island. You’ve surely noticed that Broadway in West Cape May, in particular, has been dug up every other week, and what’s been left behind is a series of asphalt mounds that are very many inches away from being flat. Granted, I’m no expert on road repairs, but I’m rarely impressed by the patchwork quilt that’s left behind by contractors — lately, though, it seems to have degraded to quite an alarming level. Driving into town on Broadway the other day felt like a rollercoaster ride. Imagine the bone-shaking, cojones-rattling effect on a bike. I asked Pam Kaithern, Mayor of West Cape May, if she had any intel — she said the bulk of the roadworks were as a result of South Jersey Gas installing high-pressure lines. “They’re upgrading equipment to provide better gas service,” she said. Which is great. But they’re leaving behind a mess.

I also contacted Dale Foster, County Engineer, who was in agreement that there was an unusual amount of work this winter and spring. “There is more ongoing utility work this offseason than I can ever remember — it appears they are in every community digging up the roads,” he said. I asked if the county stayed on top of contractors who carried out sloppy road repairs. “We have a person in this office, though only a part-time employee, who does stay on top of the utility companies about their restora-

tions of the road openings and sends constant reminders about the need to properly restore the openings. Unfortunately, during the offseason, hot asphalt is not readily available so they have to use cold patch or reheated asphalt patch material. Even today, the one asphalt plant in Cape May County is a day-today basis for production.” Well, I do appreciate being educated about the difference in quality between hot and cold asphalt. Foster said that Broadway was actually earmarked for a major resurfacing improvement project in the future. “It appears that the utility companies have done a job on the roadway,” he said. I also asked Foster about the progress of the roundabout planned for West Cape May, next to Wilbraham Park. “It’s a slow-go,” he said, adding that the county were still negotiating easement rights with local landowners who would be affected by the construction. “We do not have a timeline for completing the right-of-way purchases for the roundabout,” he said.

Dish Of The Week Since actor Jackie Chan was our inspiration for the Kung Fu Issue (it’s his 62nd birthday on Friday), it wasn’t hard to come up with an appropriate dish. “Dragon Lord”, “Twin Dragons”, “Dragons Forever”, “Dragon Fist”... Okay, Jackie, we get it. You have a thing for dragons. In China, where Chan was born, the dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. So the featured dish this week is the Kiss of Dragon Roll from Yozu in the Bayshore Mall. It comprises fried crab, avocado, eel, cucumber, with a crunchy topping. Feel like being picky by telling us that sushi is Japanese? Yozu owner Alex Teng is, like Jackie Chan, Chinese. Enjoy...

BEER OF THE WEEK Foreshore Shandy Style: Shandy ABV: 5.0% Cape May Brewing Company What’s more refreshing than a sweet and tart Cherry Limeade Shandy? Inspired by deconstructing a snow cone, Foreshore washes your palate with sweet cherries then balances the next gulp with a firm lime presence.

Open for DINNER Thursday through Monday Open 7 days a week for LUNCH & DINNER from April 12

Call now and make reservations for Easter Brunch and Dinner

WINE OF THE WEEK Bodegas Goulart “R” Malbec/Cabernet Blend $14.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street Rich ruby color with intense aromas of black cherry, smoke, and plum with hints of cedar and dried flowers making this wine a terrific red for the price. Pairs nicely with pasta, cheese and veggies.

Cocktail Of The Week Looking for a cocktail that packs a mean punch? Or how about a drink with a kick? Dating back to 1915, the Singapore Sling was created by a man named Ngiam Tong Boon, a Chinese bartender working at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel, Singapore. Still to this day, travelers visit this iconic bar while sipping on the world-famous pink cocktail. If you’re suddenly craving a taste yet don’t have a flight booked to Asia in the near future, don’t fret! The Iron Pier Craft House, at Beach and Decatur, is slinging up the tasty cocktail with Gordon’s London Dry Gin, Cherry Heering liqueur, Cointreau liqueur, pineapple and lime juice. Like Jackie Chan, it’s tougher than it looks.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

always adored the Kung Fu televisual show, even before I realized it was based on my own adventures and hardy attitude to life. The tale of a stoic and unblinking gentleman wandering the land looking for a quiet life, but running into gangs of unreasonable braggarts and toughs who provoked him to incredible violence. Much like any visit to Wildwood, really. These days I tend to use my silvertopped walking cane to dispense justice, though I grow misty-eyed with nostalgia when I remember the days when my hands and feet were deadly weapons. The fine thespian who played Kung Fu, that David Carradine lad, came to me in Cape May for lessons on how to walk, talk and carry himself. I at first thought he was a stalker, following me for nefarious reasons, and ambushed him outside Martini Beach. We fought in silence, across the street, down the beach and into the ocean, hands and feet striking with noises like gunshots. Finally, as I was about to tear his still-beating heart from his chest in a move I later taught the

legendary Patrick Swayze for the documentary Roadhouse, he gasped surrender and pledged himself to be my acolyte. I am rather glad I spared him, not least because I had on my best white Panama suit, and a loose heart makes a stain that my faithful manservant Kitchener has a devil of a job getting out in the laundry. We did not just study the arts martial, of course: I taught him manners, how to eat a 10-course dinner without social embarrassment, the correct way to strike a lady (never: if you answered any other way, then

you are marked for a chop to the side of the head next time we meet), and a thousand little things that separate a gentleman from the herd of men. I was a little surprised that Carradine ended up playing an Oriental fellow in the TV show, when, really, I am pale as a ghost. But I have no issue with that, and accept that the inscrutability that TV seems to insist Orientals have, suited the part well. In real life I tended to mock people who annoyed me with a variety of comedy expressions, such as an exaggerated “O” surprised mouth and my best cross-eyed smile. That was not quite as dignified as Carradine’s bored and pained facade, I admit, even though it made him seen a little constipated at times. I was asked to star in the movie version years later but by that time I had met the tiny and impossibility fast Mr Bruce Lee, who was visiting his grandfather, Brucie Lee, in Cape May, and I thought it best to leave the martial arts to a younger, deadlier generation, although I dead teach little Bruce how to make that peculiar angry scream.

his is the Kung Fu Issue. Why? Because it’s Jackie Chan’s birthday this Friday and we like to mix things up. Finding someone on this island who either teaches or practices kung fu proved troubling — but we aren’t fussy, so while chatting with Jim Barnes, a local builder, the subject of jujitsu came up. He practices it. And we thought, bingo! Because it IS a martial art. And that’s close enough. So here is a peek into the life of Jersey Jim Barnes. Why do you do jujitsu? Because I’m not getting any younger and I’ve always wanted to learn. Also, sparring with guys younger or stronger is great motivator to learn the techniques. How did you end up here? My lady Allison and I moved back from Bundoran, Ireland and London respectively. We were living in North Wildwood and looking for a place of our own. I was building the HomeStead HQ and Dagmer Chew had this great listing. We never even thought about West Cape May. Now that we are here, it’s probably one of the top five best decisions I/we have ever made! Where were you born and brought up? Have lived in 14 places — how about I give you percentages. Edison, North Jersey 40%; Pennsylvania 8%; Miami 4%; Manasquan, Central Jersey 10%; Ireland 20%; Cape May County 18%. What did you know about this island growing up? I didn’t know anything about Cape May until I started getting into surfing. I hear you’ve got some association with Ireland. Lived there nine years total. I started my own surfboard company, Legend Surfboards, in the surf capital of Ireland — Bundoran, Donegal. I handmade all the boards. I still have a board in the Olde Bridge Bar that all the pros sign when they come through town. I have lifelong friends over there. What do you do for a living? I’m the senior project manager with DL Miner Construction. I’ve been lucky to build some beautiful homes

Page 46 from Ocean City to Cape May Point for people I now consider friends. I grew up working with my grandfather in the construction trade from the time I could walk. I worked with my hands every day. What did you want to be when you were a little boy? The only thing I ever remember saying when I was asked this question was, “I want to be happy.” Well, I am. That cool old black Chevy in front of your home... it ended up in a movie called Wetlands. How? You mean Darth? He’s seen better days but I have plans to work on him. We were sitting in the living room having our morning coffee and the producer knocked on the door and said I want to use your truck in a movie. I’ll pay you a bunch of money. Oh, and Heather Graham will be driving it. He could have just told me Heather Graham was driving it and he would have got it for free. So you weren’t expecting a life here. Now that you have it, what are your thoughts about living here? Myself, Allison, Stout and Boru (our two rescues) have been welcomed with open arms. It really is a special place. What would you change about Cape May if you could? I’m a responsible dog owner, as are all my friends from the dog park. Dogs on the beach from September 15 to May 15. You’re a keen surfer. What’s it really like

“We were in the living room having our morning coffee and the producer knocked on the door and said, I want to use your truck in a movie. I’ll pay you a bunch of money. Oh, and Heather Graham will be driving it.” — JIM BARNES, BUILDER, SURFER, KUNG FU FAN to surf here? I love being in the water. It all depends on the day. Swim, handplane, shortboard, longboard, paddleboard, as long as I’m in the water. The surf gets really good here during big winter nor’easters. I love it. What is your perfect summer day in Cape May? Coffee on our porch while the sun comes up. An early morning paddleboard or surf session. Bella Vida for breakfast. Some time with my hands in our garden. Walk the puppies up to the Rusty Nail and grab them a couple bowzer beers and some margaritas and some food for us. Hang for a while and listen to the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey play. Walk the pups home and crash in the sunroom for a little nap. Get cleaned up and ride bikes into town to meet friends for din-

ner or maybe invite friends over for a BBQ on the grill. What about your perfect off-season day? Traveling with Allison to a foreign country to surf and meeting great locals. However, I’m sure you mean a perfect offseason day in Cape May. I do. Okay, maybe replace Rusty Nail with Higbee Beach — and riding bikes with driving to dinner. But really there so many festivals and things to do year-round now. We love the Beach Plum Farm festivals, Christmas Parade, Winter Wonderland at Congress Hall. And of course, with my Celtic roots (I’m of Irish and Scottish descent), I love the Exit Zero Burns Supper every January. This is the Kung Fu Issue... what’s your favorite movie of that genre? Every Bruce Lee film, but also Crouching Tiger, Hero, Fearless and ALL the horrible Saturday matinee kung fu B-movies... Drunken Master, Kid with the Golden Arm, any Shaw Brothers films and the best B-movie ever, Kung Fu Hustle. And... if I could add one thing? I have a life mantra that I would love more people to know and since I have this platform I’d love them to read it... “Life is good. I am thankful.” Sorry, Jim, there’s no room for that. interview by jack wright

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s time for Cape May Film Festival

t seems strange to think that Queen Victoria was around for the birth of film, but she was still on the throne when the first British film was copyrighted in 1897. Long before she was born, artists were on the hunt for a way to capture motion, but the result was more curiosity than art. Early attempts began in the fifth century, with camera obscura, which projected an inverted image through a tiny hole. The magic lantern projected light through painted glass slides in the early 18th century, and artists attempted to suggest movement by moving pieces of glass by hand. By 1800, thrill seekers could visit the phantasmagoria, in which a ghost would seem to approach and retreat as the magic lantern was moved by pulley along a smoky screen. This led, in 1831, to the phenakistoscope — a disk with a dozen images which, when spun before a mirror, would depict simple movements, like a man chopping wood, or a dancing couple. The zoetrope improved on this form by eliminating the mirror. It became a popular children’s toy. The flip book

allowed the presentation of more complex scenes, and cameras could capture about a minute of real-life motion by 1889. Before the Queen’s death in 1901, Frenchman Georges Mieles had produced the first multi-scene film, L’Affaire Dreyfus. Film was on its way to being an art form. The Cape May Film Society doesn’t go that far back as it presents its retrospective on April 8. Instead, it offers a chance to view several short films of the 21st century. The society, a volunteer organization, encourages the

“creation and appreciation” of outstanding films in southern New Jersey. They remind viewers of the joy of watching films together, in a dedicated room — in this case, in the West Cape May Borough Hall. Spoiler alert — the experience is much different than squinting at your phone as you fold laundry. This first retrospective offers a “wonderful look back at the last 15 years” of the Cape May Film Festival, with featured guests to enhance the viewing experience. There are two sessions, from 12-4 and from 6-9. Attendees can see both for $20 or either for $10. For more information, visit newnjstatefilmfestival.com. And if you want to see film thrive into the next century, consider the Cape May Film Society Teen Film Camp this June. It’s an outstanding camp for a kid looking to learn about the medium, or seeking to unleash her creative side. Teens spend the last week of June writing, filming and editing short films in groups of half-a-dozen students, each with an adult instructor — and on Friday evening, they show their completed films. Next week: Easter

T

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

he 2017 Cape May Film Festival is Saturday, April 8 at the West Cape May Borough Hall, starting at 1pm. This year, the festival will run a retrospective of films from its 17-year history. Stefan Prosky, curator for the festival, is very thankful for the local supporters. “It’s what always charged up my dad, actor Robert Prosky, a co-founder,” he says. “The town always comes out to support us, and we are deeply grateful for that! Also, we’ve watched our local young filmmakers grow up and become good people. We hope their involvement in the arts helped that become a reality. Prosky is also thankful to another group: the filmmakers who return year after year. “When you see the films we’re showing this weekend, some are from directors who have screened with us over and over,” he says. “They’re our favorite directors, and the films this weekend are the best of their best. We’re looking forward to having many of them as our guests — and you’ll love hearing from them.”

Stefan Prosky, film festival curator Veronica Scutaro, newly-elected president of the festival says, “It’s fitting that we’re doing a retrospective this year. This sets the tone for moving forward. How can you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been? We have a 17-year history of providing the premiere forum in South Jersey where filmmakers freely express themselves-with big screen and an audience of film lovers. And our film camp kids have the same opportunity for that crowd reaction. We hope these filmmakers move on to Tribeca or even Sundance, but they had an audience first in

Cape May.” Scutaro acknowledges all the residents and professionals that kept the film festival alive all these years. “Many small, community film festivals have fell to the wayside,” she says. “It’s not enough to have the passion, there’s a lot of hard work that goes into this as well — and we are extremely grateful to those who have kept this festival from going dark. As much as we’ve needed the volunteer leaders, we’ve needed an audience more. You can’t play to an empty house, and this town has the film lovers that keep coming back and supporting the effort.” While attending the Exit Zero Burn Supper this past winter, Scutaro ran into a couple excited for this year’s festival, adding, “One woman said, ‘We she couldn’t wait for the festival this year! Well, now it’s here and we hope everyone will join us.” Come to the CMFF17 this Saturday, April 8, starting at 1pm at the West Cape May Borough Hall. You’ll be amazed by the films and hearing from the filmmakers. Learn more at www.capemayfilm.org.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have been dating a lady I really like for about six months now. She’s a bit younger than I am and extremely attractive. The problem is my children and friends suspect she is a gold digger and not really interested in me for me. How do I tell that? As far as I’m concerned, everything is Camelot. And to tell you the truth, I don’t think I really care if she is a gold digger. — Honey Trapped Dear Honey It’s perfectly fine if you don’t care if you are getting reeled in, as long as you protect your ass-ets. For example, getting married too quickly and without a pre-nup might be an invitation for disaster. If she suddenly wants you to sell your house and buy another that “will be just ours” …not good. Plus,

Wise answers to perplexing questions

it sounds like your kids are worried about their inheritance. So, to set their minds at ease, enjoy Sunday brunch at Fins and talk to them about it, assuring them you’re not so daft that you would sell all for a passing fling. You could also test the waters with your lady love and casually mention that your estate, including the house, is in an airtight trust for your children and grandchildren. Or better yet, you are filing for bankruptcy tomorrow. If she flies the coop, you’ll know. And by the way, you really should care.

Dear Answer Lady I have been friends with another woman for two years. We’ve gone on trips together and in the summer, we would go out to dinner and the theater a couple times a month. I leaned on her when my marriage collapsed. I thought we were best friends until I found out she was saying some things about me that weren’t nice. The next time I saw her, she acted as though nothing was wrong. I don’t know what to do. Confront her? Ignore that I heard these things? — Deeply Hurt Dear Hurt If confronting her would make you feel better, go for it. However, you seem more hurt than angry, in which case it would be better for you to cut your ties. Learn the lesson and try not to repeat the error in judgment. She is not worthy of your friendship or anyone else’s. You need some pampering. The Answer Lady suggests you begin a detox massage at Cape May Day Spa, followed by shopping at Bath Time and Good Scents. A custom-made scent and an inspirational gift or piece of jewelry should restore your chi.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

arch 20, 2017. The inagural Monday Morning Meadows walk in the South Cape May Meadows. Only nine months until we call it a season. But until then, every Monday 7:30-9:30, I and my merry band of Associate Naturalists will use our birding skills to show residents and visitors the special nature of Cape May. It was a cold morning, but for once it wasn’t raining — as tradition has it, the first Meadows walk of the year is conducted under rainy skies. On this morning the roster included a dozen or so male red-winged blackbirds advertising their genetic fitness by keying up on strategic perches, flaring their epaulets and chanting the magic incantation, “Tur-a-ling.” It’s the spell that sends winter heading for the northern horizon. Just one vocalizing male blackbird tweaks the tail of every other male in earshot. By the time we started our one-anda-half mile circuit the whole Meadows was enveloped by blackbird surround sound. And the females hadn’t even arrived yet. On the ponds, ducks and geese, two by

two, were seeking out that perfect nest. Note to the Canada Geese that habitually nest by the bridge on the east path: It’s a stupid place to build a nest. The place gets constant traffic. The most entertaining performance came from the fivesome of American oystercatcher on the beach. With these large, vocal shorebirds, two is company, four’s a crowd. Five makes a frenzy but the antics were hilarious, a regular avian Keystone Cops routine with shades of West Side Story. On frenzied wings, the hormonally

charged fivesome vied for rights to the beach, making the air ring with their whistled taunts, while just offshore a host of northern gannets arrowed into the water, indicating the whereabouts of baitfish. In a few short weeks these large black and white sullids will be on breeding cliffs on the coast of Canada. Now it’s time to feed up on the bounty of fish returning to Delaware Bay. Osprey? None, although their arrival is imminent. In fact the only birds of prey to make the list were black and turkey vulture. Had the walk gone another hour we’d have tallied red-tailed hawk and bald eagle. Birds of prey keep banker’s hours, waiting until the sun starts thermals perking. All in all, 44 species in two hours is not a bad tally for mid-March, a time when the ranks of Cape May’s wintering birds have been whittled down by attrition and the flood of spring migrants is still several weeks away. Until then and every Monday we’ll be at South Cape May taking the pulse of the season. Please join us. Who knows what next Monday will bring?
