Burns Supper Rocks The Hall The fourteenth annual Exit Zero Burns Supper was quite the occasion. Nearly 400 people packed Cape May Convention Hall to enjoy this quirky celebration of legendary 18th-century Scots poet Robert Burns. The Washington Inn prepared superb food, while entertainment came from Nae Breeks pipe band, the Bastard Bearded Irishmen and recitals from Exit Zero’s Jack Wright, if you can call theat entertainment. The Big Exit Zero Information Page The happenings and events in America’s Original Seaside Resort
FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Why did the New England Patriots bench their best defensive player in the Super Bowl? It isn’t clear why Malcolm Butler didn’t line up at cornerback, but aren’t you glad he didn’t?!
HOW TO... ORDER A PHOTO
REQUEST A PHOTOGRAPHER
«Call us on 609-770-8479 or order online at ezstore.us. Either way, you need to tell us on which date the photo appeared, and on which page. Orders must be prepaid.
SUBSCRIBE TO COLOR ISSUES
«Although we no longer offer subscriptions to the weeky issue, you can still subscribe to our three color issues. Call 609-770-8479 or visit ezstore.us. The cost is $25.
«Email info@exitzero.us and write PHOTO REQUEST in the subject line. Or call 609-770-8479. Tell us the date of the event and how many people are expected. There is no charge.
SEND A VACATION PHOTO
«We love pictures of our magazine on vacation. Email your photos and details to info@exitzero.us and write EZ ON VACATION in the subject line. Do NOT send hard copies. They don’t print well.
READ US ONLINE
«You can read our issues online, courtesy of our virtual magazine reader. Just visit our website, exitzero.us, and click where it says THIS WEEK’S ISSUE. Enjoy!
ADVERTISE

SOME INTERESTING TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Celebrity Sightings
On The Wild Side
Local Landmark
It’s a badly kept secret, but punk legend Blondie, aka Debbie Harry, is a regular visitor to the island after buying a home in Cape May Point last year. Sightings include dinner at the Mad Batter. Remember: Give celebs their space!
We were sorry to hear about the passing of snowy owl Higbee in January. RIP to this beautiful creature, who, wearing a transmitter, helped advance The Nature Conservancy’s understanding of the value of New Jersey’s salt marshes.
The mostly submerged SS Atlantus, part of a fleet of concrete ships commissioned during World War I, ran aground just off Sunset Beach in 1926 while it was being prepared to form a manmade reef. Reminder: Please do not walk out to the remains on frozen water this winter, as many have done. It’s not safe — there’s moving water and currents under that ice. In fact, walking out there makes even less sense than a ship made of concrete!
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Every week, we’re offering up a riddle that we first try ourselves. This one stumped us all. Can you do better? Answer is on page 24, but don’t cheat. A Lower Township student leaves home. He makes three left turns. He returns home and finds two masked men. Who are the masked men?

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
W
e went to press before Tuesday’s city council meeting, but I can tell you, if you don’t know already, that the council reached an agreement with former police chief Rob Sheehan. He is sadly not getting his job back but will retain the post of captain and also received a financial settlement. More on this in the next issue. If you’re a true sports fan who actually ENJOYS watching your team, I’m envious. Never managed that feat. Watching the game at the weekend, I had butterflies at the beginning, roared with relief when we took the lead, then spent the rest of the game worrying we would lose it. In the end, victory was ours. And how stupendously satisfying that was. It also put me in a great frame of mind for Super Bowl the next day. Sorry... am I confusing you? Let me explain — MY big game of the weekend was beloved hometown soccer team St Mirren attempting to stay on top of the Scottish Championship. I’ve had way too many decades of heartache following this team, but
I loved the Super Bowl wager the folks at Cape May Brewing Company had with Boston-based Night Shift Brewing. Thanks to the efforts of Foles & Co., the owner of Night Shift will soon be heading down to work the bar at the Cape May Tasting Room, wearing a “We Lost 18” T-shirt. Nice job. Speaking of wickedly enjoyable events, we had the biggest, bestest Burns Supper of all time on January 26. Nearly 400 people packed into Convention Hall for a night of revelry, poetry, bagpipes, Celtic rock and superb food, served up by the experts at the Washington Inn. Michael Craig and his team did an amazing job. So excited and inspired was I by the reaction that we are going to go all out next year. The supper will just be one part of Burns Weekend, a four-day long celebration of Scotland’s national poet. A reminder that we closed Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse until we open the new Exit Zero Filling Station, in late spring. We’re working from a secret location, but you can call us on 609-770-8479 or email info@ exitzero.us.

this season has been special... so far. Sound familiar? This is why I empathize so strongly with Philly sports fans. And not just because my inlaws are north-east Philly stock. The Eagles evoke the same blue-collar aura I associate with my favorite game back in Scotland — the ORIGINAL football. All in all, a fantastic weekend of sporting action. I hope that all Eagles fans are soaking up every minute of this because it might not happen again for a while, even though you’re surely favorites to repeat in 2019.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit someone up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every Saturday, our photographer walks the streets of America’s Original Seaside Resort, armed with a warm bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Barbara and Barry Kolvek of Little Egg Harbor. This retired couple were visiting the stores on the mall when they were ambushed. Who would they most like to share this bucket with? Their parents. Photograph: Aleksey Moryakov
The best read of the year! It starts with a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast of Cape May and develops into a story that will keep you turning the pages... Available from Whale’s Tale and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or buy at the Exit Zero online store. Visit ezstore.us/books.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
rganized sports are not my thing. I say this as my faithful manservant, Kitchener, tries for the thousandth time to explain the rules of American football, or “football” as he insists on calling it. I had watched it for many years, and taken part at a high level (Cape May’s Saltwater Taffies were unbeatable in their day) without having much idea what it was about. I had assumed it was a well-mannered blend of dancing and brawling, and applied myself in the same manner I used to when things got out of hand at the Mug in the old days. Imagine my surprise when I realized there was a scoring system! We love to play soccer in the grounds of the D’Catur Mansion, though less than we like, as Young Albert ate the map showing the location of the landmines I buried in an effort to deter mormons and trick-or-treaters. Also, the 40lb leather ball I insist we use, tends to render unconscious anyone rash enough to attempt a header: this is why so many of our older residents appear to have no necks, and addled wits. Well, partly, anyways: our prox-
imity to Wildwood and its shallow gene pool has done us no favors, either. Cricket I am passingly fond of: we used to, after coming back from the war, use live hand grenades, the adrenaline-chasing young fools that we were, but soon we ran out of players. Baseball we were game for, too: I was a fan of those uniforms and the hand signals and such like: I have the same fascination for baseball and its ornate traditions as I have for the Catholic church and those strange fellows who ride around in little cars
wearing fezes upon their heads. Golf, I am actively opposed to. I regard it as the occupation of morons and presidents. That’s not to say the motor skills are not useful in real life: many’s a night I have stood atop the widow’s walk on the mansion, on a small square of turf, with a driver and a stack of balls, picking off stray shoebies at a distance of well over 300 yards. There’s something infinitely satisfying about the noise of the club hitting the ball, watching the arc for long seconds, then seeing a tiny figure leap in the air and fall prone with a tiny thwock sound carrying to one’s ears on the evening breeze. Usually, I send Young Albert to retrieve the balls and any wallets he can pry from the unconscious figure with his little dog teeth. Darts, now that is truly the sport of kings. We used to have a dartboard in The Brown Room, and all sorts of interesting people would settle minor disputes with those tiny lethal throwing arrows. At least until Ernie Hemingway decided to dip his in an Amazonian nerve toxin. But we don’t speak of that.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, fighting racial segregation
y brother shares his January 31 birthday with Jackie Robinson, a fact that bolstered his boasting in Little League. Back then, we couldn’t understand the radical change Robinson represented. Sure, he was the first African-American to play in the major leagues, but we underestimated his impact. When Robinson broke the color line, it was April, 1947. New Jersey schools were not yet integrated. The United States military was not yet integrated. A black man playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers was a very big deal. Robinson was not the greatest baseball player in the Negro Leagues. He may not even have been the greatest athlete in his own family. His brother Matthew Mackenzie, aka Mack, won silver at the 1936 Olympics. Mack left college to support his family by sweeping the streets of Pasadena. Racism cost him that job when he was fired, along with all other black employees, in retaliation for a judge’s order to integrate public pools. Mack’s experience warned Jackie that his athleticism would not protect him from racism.
Dodgers owner Branch Rickey chose Jackie Robinson because he had “guts enough not to fight back.” Robinson was targeted with rough play, physical abuse and verbal assaults, sometimes from his teammates. Manager Leo Durocher supported his player, telling teammates who objected to integration, “I do not care if the guy… has stripes like a f****** zebra. I’m the manager of this team, and I say he plays.” Baseball commissioner Happy Chandler spoke out against a threatened strike by white players because,
“This is the United States of America and one citizen has as much right to play as another.” By 1948, Robinson no longer carried the burden alone, as Larry Doby, Satchel Paige and other African-Americans joined the league. By then, Robinson’s skill had won him fans, and a poll showed him behind only Bing Crosby as the most popular man in America. Of course, Robinson’s acceptance did not end racism, and thousands of little kids were required to emulate Jackie Robinson as schools were integrated, braving insults and injury from students and teachers. The Center for Community Arts, in partnership with Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, explores that history with From Segregation to Unification, an exhibit running until April 15 at the Carroll Gallery at the Physick Estate. The exhibit focuses on the Franklin Street School, which served Cape May’s vibrant African American community from 1928 to 1948. Admission to the Carroll Gallery is free. Check capemaymac.org. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a best friend and we used to do everything together. I don’t just mean going to the Ugly Mug and drinking, although we did plenty of that. We hung out at least three times a week — poker, tennis, golf. Six months ago, he met a girl and they hit it off. So, amen to that, but she has systematically closed his world off to all his friends, not just me. My question to you, Answer Lady; what do we do about it? Just say sayonara to a good friend? — Left Out in Left Field Dear Left Field Sadly, yes. That is exactly what you must do. Not sayonara, but adieu until the dust either settles on the relationship or your friend is ready to reconnect. Maybe the girlfriend is threatened by all the single friends her beau
Wise answers to perplexing questions
is surrounded with. Do not, however, close the door on the friendship. Ask both of them to join you at the Ugly Mug for dinner and a cocktail and maybe bring a date just to ease any tensions that might be hovering. That’s all you can do really, is to keep reaching out and hope your friend has the wisdom to know that friends not only do not grow on trees but will wither without proper care. Dear Answer Lady I am recently married for the second time and pregnant with my second child. My four-
year-old daughter is very much attached to her stepfather. On the other hand, my ex-husband is less and less involved with her now that he has a new wife of his own and a new baby. My husband wants to adopt my daughter so he can provide for her. I’m not really sure what is right. I don’t want to alienate her from her father, but he has been out-to-lunch for some time now, especially financially. — On the Fence Dear Fence The Answer Lady strongly suggests you do not allow the adoption without the express permission of your daughter’s father and we do not mean just legal permission. He needs to be okay with this. Flawed though your ex-husband may be, he is still your daughter’s father and her relationship with him will affect all of her future relationships. It’s important that she knows that it is okay to love him even if you don’t. So, it is best to be sure that a move like that will reap more good than not. You might want to talk to your daughter about it. Take her to Stewart’s for an ice cream sundae or a banana split and just get a sense about how she feels about it.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
I
t’s February. That means birds of prey and waterfowl, both of which are be found in abundance in Cape May and Cumberland County. It wasn’t long ago that bald eagles were rare in New Jersey, their numbers diminished by pesticide poisoning. No longer. Winter is the best time to see eagles, when the ranks of our local breeders (perhaps thirty pair) are augmented by northern breeders, squeezed out of their northern territories by ice. Eagles, as primarily fish-eating birds need open water. In addition there are lots of immature eagles around. With nothing to do until they attain breeding age, in the seventh year of their lives, young eagles are essentially nomadic, going where the food is. Since pre-Colonial times the Delaware Bay region has been a winter eagle stronghold, serving up winter killed fish as well as waterfowl and deer carcases. Yes, boys and gulls, our national emblem eats carrion. There’s no shame attached to eating carrion. It’s just nature’s way of recycling.
m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s
Protein is protein, warm or cold. And the nice thing about carrion is, it’s easy to catch. Good news for vultures whose feet, unlike other birds of prey are not designed for grasping, the signature characteristic of a “raptor.” Black and Turkey Vultures are actually storks, who have evolved into raptor-like birds. True raptors or not, vultures are champion aerialists whose mobility is limited only by the hours of daylight. Some think vultures are loathsome. I find adult turkey vultures, with their red
heads and bone-colored bills, striking. Black Vulture? You got me there. That skeletal-like face is something only a mother could love. Turkey vultures lack black vultures’ sense of smell so they often rely upon their smaller cousins to lead them to some roadkill left over after black vultures have had their fill. The unfeathered heads of both species are refinements that allow vultures to delve deeply into carcases the size of deer. But if an eagle shows up, both vultures give ground to the much larger bird of prey. As for hungry red-tailed hawks, they must wait their turn or find another meal. Speaking of red-taileds, the birds are courting now. Their aerial displays visible over the trees at Jakes Landing. Our resident bald eagles are already incubating eggs. Great-horned Owls, too. Osprey? Patience. Our resident osprey are still enjoying the tropical sun. They’ll be back around St Patty’s Day.

The Movie Column
I
“The Post” is reviewed by Elissa Campanella, Cape May Film Society
am a retired history teacher who lived through the Vietnam War era and vividly remember the Pentagon Papers controversy. Steven Spielberg’s The Post is generally well done. The film, like many in the genre, takes some liberties too as it focuses on a slightly minor player in the controversy. Daniel Ellsburg leaked to the New York Times a secret report stating our elected officials lied to the American people about the course of the war (namely, that we were winning, but we weren’t). The New York Times began to publish them, but was enjoined from further publication. Ellsburg then released portions of the report to The Washington Post and approximately 15 other major newspapers around the country. The film focuses primarily on the Post, its owner and publisher, Katherine Graham (Meryl Streep, brilliant as always), and brash editor-in-chief, Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks, who was a highlight for me). It centers on the decision to publish the reports. Yes, the film is suspenseful and exciting. Will they or won’t they publish? Will free-
Streep and Hanks shine in The Post dom of the press be sustained? Can Richard Nixon’s government curtail the truth through repeated attacks on the press? Will Graham and Bradley end up in jail? The performances are first-rate, but the screenplay has issues. The focus on the Washington Post’s role relegates Ellsburg to a footnote. The film never tells what happened to Ellsburg, who is ultimately arrested and tried. There was also a lack of subtlety at times. Another major subplot in the film reflects how women were treated in the 1970s, because,
after all, Graham is a woman in “the man’s world” of newspaper publishing. The film clearly portrays how women were dismissed, ignored, not taken seriously. As a woman of the 1970s, this hit home. But some of the scenes were too blatant. Graham emerges from the Supreme Court building and walks down the stairs through a throng of adoring young women. The supporting cast includes Sarah Paulson who has one terrific scene with Tom Hanks, and Bob Odenkirk, who as we’ve seen in his show Better Call Saul, was as always a joy to watch. Visually the film captures many of the details of the era, down to rotary phones and typewriters. And how everyone smoked! The smoky, harried pace of a typical newsroom is presented authentically as well. The truth here is that although this film is not perfect, the themes presented remain important and, sadly, current. For that reason alone, as well as the amazing performances, I recommend the film. After you watch it, don’t forget to Google Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers for the complete story.

SANDY is a chow chow mix who is looking for a caring “retirement” home. She was adopted from Canada and lived in a home until 3 years ago when her owner died. Since then she has been living outside and has developed severe arthritis in her back legs. Hopefully there is a caring individual who will open their home and heart to Sandy.
MARGARET is an affectionate English bulldog and St. Bernard mix who arrived at the shelter with her litter mate when their owners were no longer able to care for them. With Maggie adopted, Margaret is waiting at the shelter for someone to give her a loving home as well. Hopefully, she too will find a loving home as did her sister.
LUCKY is a three year old pit-bull terrier mix who has been waiting at the shelter for over a year. Altough she is very petite for her breed, Lucky has a huge personality and tons of energy. Whether she is settling quietly in her kennel or showing off her favorite tricks, she loves meeting new people. Lucky is waiting for her very special someone to love forever.
