Never Grow Up Spring Break This year, Congress Hall’s spring break getaway was yet another successful two-week event. It was a family-oriented kind of spring break. No keg stands or wet T-shirt contests here! There were bucketloads of activities to keep the kiddies busy, including the ever-popular Never Grow Up Luncheon where Peter Pan’s cast of characters roamed the ballroom, putting smiles on everyone’s face.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Why do fireflies light up? For a variety of reasons — to warn off predators, to attract a mate (higher flash rates are sexier) and to help identify members of the same species. The chemical reaction that allows for this spectacle is called bioluminescence, and it is bio-tastic.

Ramblings From The Editor

A

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

n ordinance introduced to Cape May City Council on April 3 that would keep some parking meters operational during the holiday season (and beyond) has our hackles up. Ostensibly, according to a letter from the Business Improvement District, such a law would discourage mall employees from taking spots that might otherwise be occupied by customers and merchants. I think this would do more harm than good. We should be rewarding people who are visiting Cape May in the colder months, not penalizing them. And while proponents of the ordinance will tell you that more open spots ARE a reward, we doubt the public will see this as anything but a money grab. Our meters already bring in a million dollars between May and October. Asking for more is a bad look, no matter what the rationale. Do we really want the rap as the only shore town in the region handing out overtime meter tickets along with holiday cheer? Secondly (assuming it IS employees taking the majority of these spots, which we’re

not convinced about) why should merchants be any more entitled to parking spots than their employees? At worst, it’s elitist. At best, short-sighted. Consider that it’s often employees — servers and bartenders — who are leaving work at the wee hours with pocketfuls of cash. Yes, one of Cape May’s biggest draws is its safety, but who feels entirely calm walking several blocks in the dark with a wad of bills, no matter the location? There’s no guarantee that charging for parking will keep employees out of these

spots. But there IS a guarantee it will illicit more than a few eye rolls from visitors. Having said that, I think we can all agree: Customer is king. Both merchants AND employees who are comfortable and physically able should make a habit of parking away from the main drag or, even better, walking, biking or even rollerblading into work. As employers, we should be incentiving our staff to do just that, rather than relying on the city to disincentivize parking close by. We’re willing to bet the former is a lot more effective than the latter, and it won’t annoy our visitors nearly as much. Was sad to hear about the fire in West Cape May last week that destroyed the home of Gayle Stahlhuth and Lee O’Connor, who run the city’s East Lynne Theater Company. “The outpouring of generosity from the Cape May community, and the NJ and NY theater community has been heartwarming and incredible,” says Gayle. Thankfully, the 2018 season WILL go on, even though some important archives were destroyed in the fire.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Robin Giannini from The Washington Inn is up. How long have you been bartending? One year. Favorite drink to make? A Woodford Reserve Manhattan. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer asks me to make them whatever I want. If you give me an idea, then I have a better chance at making something you’d enjoy. That makes sense! Biggest tip you ever received? $400.

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Beaches ‘N Cream - ABV: 6.0% Peach purée romping around with some juicy hops is the heart and soul of this brew. With a luxurious mouthfeel thanks to the addition of lactose, wheat, and oats, with Beaches n’ Cream, you’ll drink your dessert while catching some sun.

Sunset Liquors Strehn Blaufränkisch 2016 Rosè - $13.99 Bouquet of red apples, strawberries and raspberries, with hints of vanilla and cherries. On the palate is crispy, juicy and refreshing, with a lively elegant acidity. A wonderful spring sipper.

Produce Report Ever wonder what the best time is to eat corn or a tomato? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. So far, it’s been a pretty slow start for produce in our area due to the cold temps. However, lettuce season is just about here. And did you know that the potato is the only fresh vegetable that is more popular than lettuce in the US?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Delaney’s Irish Pub and Grill on Washington Street Mall. There are 130 items on this menu, folks — Jack counted them. Cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, quick bites, burgers, pizzas, lite fare, you name it. The music: “Don’t Dream it’s Over” by Australian rock band Crowded House came on at one point, which prompted Katie to get all nostalgic for the 80s — 80s movies, specifically. Among the EZ team favorites are: Goonies, Heathers, Can’t Buy Me Love, Say Anything, Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. (What’d we miss? Tweet us at @exitzeromag!) On the TV: The US Masters. How ’bout that infamous ankle roll? The server: Friendly Olga from the Ural Mountain region of western Russia. She’s been in Cape May since the summer, and she likes it — the weather, especially. You think it’s been cold here? It’s 17 degrees there. The drinks: Guinness for Mike (when in Rome…). A Harp lager for Katie (when in Rome…). A Tullamore Dew (or, as Diane mistakenly wrote down, Telemundo) Irish whiskey for Jack (when in Rome…). A water for Diane (when saving your calories for a starter of jalapeno poppers…) The food: Katie and Jack went splitsies on a sriracha burger with fried jalapeno straws (the ciabatta bun was flaky and delightful, not dry like ciabatta buns so often are), and a shepherd’s pie. Mike got the prime rib with fries, and Jack put the leftovers into an empty potato chip bag to take home for the EZ puppies, but left the potato chip bag on the table. When Mike dipped his fries into his jus, Katie called it the “lamest jus dip ever.” (Roll the tape…) Diane ordered a tasty chicken salad-stuffed tomato. Jack thinks the name of this dish is erroneous, since it is not in fact possible to “stuff” a tomato, so much as slice it partially open and finagle some chicken salad into the opening. Discuss. The discussion: Katie mentioned that she has seen “many, many” naked, burlesque drag shows, which led to a discussion of nipple tassles. How DO they stay on? Glue? Clips? Ventricular force? Also: Can dogs get high cholesterol? Spoiler: Yes, and a diet rich in table scraps is often the culprit. Who knew?

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Steve and Shanah B. from Millstone Township, NJ on their way to lunch. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Kurt Cobain. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

S

o apparently my last 250 columns got sent to the editor’s spam folder. I was wondering why everybody stopped talking to me. If you’re having trouble understanding me, I apologize. I have a very sore throat, which I fully earned while singing my proverbial ass off at the Second Annual Billy Joel Night, Cape May Part I (a long, annoying name, I know, but whaddyagonnado?) last Saturday night at Cabanas with my amazing band, The Strangers. The story behind this band is long and winding (a Beatles reference in a Billy Joel story? WHO DOES THAT!?!) and begins in 2013, when we were called Glass Houses. Yada yada yada... The Second Annual Billy Joel Night, Cape May Part II (or 2ABJNCMP2) happens on May 12 at 7pm, and if you’re not there I will be severely put out. So put out. Nationally renowned karaoke singer Randy Redelico (featured in the NPR segment about me and my book way back in 2008) was in attendance, with his lovely wife Wendy. These two have been huge (figuratively), unwavering supporters of mine since 2005 or so, coming to all my various musical and theatrical productions, which is always greatly

appreciated. They also never fail to tuck $2040 in my pocket when I’m not looking. Note to self: Get clothes with more pockets. Also in attendance were newbie Terry O’Brien fans Herb and Diane Mogck (pronounced Moh-guh-check, I think). You may recognize them from Diane’s constant heckling and Herb requesting Rolling Stones and Doors songs at Beatles and Billy Joel shows. (All in jest, of course; we love you guys.) They rarely tuck money into my pockets, but this is okay. Most people don’t. Did I mention The Beatles? The Love Me Dudes made its home in The Boiler Room at

Congress Hall from 2013-2016, until we found ourselves movin’ out (a Billy Joel reference in a Beatles story? WHO DOES THAT!?!) to Cabanas, where we’ve spent the last two winters. We deeply enjoyed our time at The Boiler Room, but things change and here we are. Cabanas has proved a wonderful new home for both bands and will remain so as long as they don’t pull any crap... (Kidding! Just kidding. Payton Bowman and the gang down there have been amazing to work with.) The Love Me Dudes recently completed our sixth (SIXTH!) Annual Beatles Nights this past January and February. Surviving founding members Terry Dougherty (bass), Al Olivero (drums) and myself (xylophone) have been joined for three years now by Herb Moore (guitar), Rachel Husta (vocals) and Sue Polcer (keys). There’s a lot of great bands out there. I’m not sure any of them are better than this one. Cabanas marks the second bar that Mary Sexton (Karaoke codename: Mary Sex-Bomb) and I have worked in together. This is surprising. But I’m not sure if it’s surprising because it’s only been two bars or because it’s only been two bars... see next page

Speaking of the Iron Pier restaurant, (I was, wasn’t I?) I am super-pleased to inform you that I and my aspiring, unnamed little theater troupe will be mounting our first production up there on Thursday, April 26. The show is called Downton Stabbey. And no, you don’t have to know anything about Downton Abbey to enjoy it, as long as you understand the concepts of butlers, maids and jokes. A very, very loose concept of jokes. I’ll be talking lots and lots about this in the coming weeks (yes, we’re hoping there will be more than one of these columns) but for now I’ll just tell you about my excellent cast — mah bois Kevin Ebner and Chris Nagle, and mah ladies Rebecca Sundstrom and Amy Plantarich (pronounced Plantarich). Chris Nagle may be the one person in the world more famous then me, but he’s in radio, so the data is sketchy. Downton Stabbey at the Iron Pier will run the last Thursday of each month until demand exceeds supply. Or... the opposite. Tickets are $60 and include a yummy three-course dinner and the show, which will be a murder-mystery, with fantastic, moderately priced prizes for the winners. But, and most importantly, I may be your waiter, so everyone but the Redelicos should come prepared to stuff cash in my pockets — of which there will be many. But seriously, we’re in rehearsals now and can’t wait to open the show. Iron Pier only has about 40 seats, with over 20 already sold for the 26th, so if you want to get in on April, do it soon. Otherwise you’re out of luck until after Memorial Day. Unless demand exceeds supply. (Wink, wink, nudge.) Let’s see... what else am I into these days? I am (still) at the Rio Station Friday nights for Terry O’ke where I’d LOVE to see some Cape May faces but I know there’s a bridge involved so, you know. Many things have changed at the Rio sine I started there in 2005. But two things have remained fairly constant — karaoke on Fridays and Tami Marks behind the bar to make you a fantastic drink and have very little tolerance for

April 12, 2018 your shenanigans. Starting end of June I will be the Tuesday night karaoke guy at Carney’s. Joe Carney has been trying to get me in there for years, but the timing just never quite worked out. This time he was able to lure me in with the promise of reasonable payment at the end of my shift. BONUS: Carney’s karaoke will feature a family-friendly show in the early evening prior to the late night madness. Yes, I have Frozen. (Breaks down in tears...) And some Hamilton. (Goes comatose.) My partner-in-acoustic crime, Tim Joyce, and I will be returning to the Beach Shack at Rusty Nail this season, alternating Sundays and Mondays and starting on Monday, May 7, 4:30-8:30. Tim and I first worked together in the 90s with the late, great Southwind (where he was, and remains, MUCH older than me) and got back together a couple years ag. He just can’t quit me. (A 10 years irrelevant Brokeback Mountain joke? WHO DOES THAT!?!) I’m also deep in the planning stages of launching a couple of online projects, and I have a nifty little YouTube channel going (w w w.youtube.com/TerryNOBrien) that’s been a lot of fun. Keep track of all these things and more this year as I return to stuff your brain full of things you really don’t care about or want to know. I’m very happy to be back. To offer financial support to any or all of the above-mentioned projects, please visit www.patreon.com/terryoke1 and make your monthly pledge. Patreon is a crowd-sourcing website a la Kickstarter or GoFundMe. But where those are one-time donation sites, Patreon vests monthly for as long as you wish to do so. 100% of the proceeds from the Patreaon go towards my various musical, theatrical and online ventures (acquisition of hardware/software, stage rights, actor pay, etc), which I’ll keep you looped in on both here and on the Patreaon site itself, where I’ll be creating patron-only content throughout the season. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

love the scent of spring in Cape May. As I stand on the porch of The D’Catur Mansion (close to the beach, but I will not divulge the exact address as we do find ourselves plagued by legions of fans, eager to have me rub their heads for luck), the breeze carries hints of saltwater taffy, cologne from Wildwood’s young bucks, a sweet intoxicating scent from whatever those lithe young surfers smoke at The Point, and horse poop. Ah, yes, horse excrement: the lifeblood of Cape May, once. It was not long after we opened our refuge for disturbed cavalry steeds, in 1918, and rather than the few dozen traumatized horses we expected, some 30,000 arrived, courtesy of the US Army. Many still had wide-eyed cavalrymen on them. Well, we are nothing if not soft-hearted when it comes to animals (the Scotch proprietor of this mag welcomes any and all two-legged put bulls into his home, and cuts quite a dash when he takes his evening constitutional with them. He puts me in mind of a portly Luke Skywalker being chased by tauntauns) So rather than open a meat pie factory,

we instead geared our entire economy to center on horses. Every family was given one, and every man, woman and Wildwooder living in the city limits was required to pass a horsemanship test aged 10. Failure to pass was punishable by being dragged through the streets behind the horse for a block. No automobiles were permitted, and every pound of goods brought in or taken out had to be hauled by horse. Even new horses being delivered to our “sanctuary city” had to be collected by other horses. I must say those were my

favorite days in Cape May: life at a walk is lovely. Of course, there were downsides: those poor poor steeds were not keen on loud noises, and every time some fool coughed loudly, a stampede ensued. Also, we tended to attract washed-up old cowboys and actors who imagined they were cowboys. That John Wayne moseyed into town one sunset, and took up residence in Martini Beach, where he drank Long Island Iced Teas and slurred “the hell you will” at all and sundry. The by-product of all these horses — namely 150,000 lbs of poop a day, was both a blessing and a curse. We employed a legion of small boys and girls to scurry behind the horses with little shovels and hemp sacks, and paid a penny a pound. Every garden in Cape May received an allowance of 100lbs a week, that ensured some of the most spectacular roses in the country. But there’s a limit, and even after farmers were made to spread the muck, we found the land levels were rising at a rate of an inch a month. So, we did what we had to: we compressed the manure and constructed Ocean City.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Feasting on History

isions of the future used to involve easy food. Tang was going to replace juice. Algae-based gel would provide the nutrients of vegetables without pesky stems or stalks. Nutrients would be delivered in pill form, or in a Willy Wonka-like three course gum, sparing us the “trouble” of eating. Food science was going to save the world from hunger, poverty, and the drudgery of the kitchen. In many ways, processed food is a wonderful thing, but it is no longer a part of the ideal future table. Most of us hope our future selves follow the advice of author Michael Pollan — if your great-great grandmother wouldn’t recognize it as food, don’t eat it — but we also hope our grandmothers were adventurous. Humans use food to learn about each other. Courtship almost always involves food, for example. Ritual meals define our holidays and tell our family stories. We use recipes our grandparents used, and then combine them with the recipes our friends learned from their grandparents. Top my pizza crust with your wasabi sauce or add a touch of the Amer-

ican south by making gnocchi with sweet potatoes. Attend a Passover seder hosted by a friend who grew up in Mexico and there will be jalapenos in the matzo ball soup. The blend of histories in our food is essential to America — after all, we use the melting pot as a metaphor when we tell our national story. Historical food is fascinating. We gag at the recipe for black broth served to Sparta’s soldiers. We speculate about when Chinese iced treats transformed into modern ice cream. We’re skeptical of the story that Benjamin Franklin introduced tofu, or Tau-Fu,

to America, but it’s a fun idea. We’re curious about what George Washington ate, and ashamed that he owned Hercules, the man whose extraordinary cooking skills made his dinner parties famous. We credit the WW2 soldiers who choked down early versions of power bars in D-rations, and we salute the astronauts who drank Tang on our behalf. Because food and history are so linked, it’s natural that food is behind the annual fundraiser for Cape May’s living history museum. The 18th annual Feasting on History gala brings together area restaurants in support of Historic Cold Spring Village. It’s a great party in a big space, and the open seating makes it easy to mingle with other history and food lovers. Local restaurants — and wineries, distilleries and breweries — offer signature dishes and drinks while celebrating history. The event takes place on Tuesday, May 1, at 6pm at Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum at Cape May Airport. Tickets are $85/person or $800 for a table of 10. For information and tickets, call 609898-2300 x10.

tar-crossed lovers meet cross-cultural differences in the new drama/ comedy Oh Lucy! Prepare to have your passport stamped as you venture from Tokyo to California with non-stop service to the universal destinations of spring awakening, betrayal, and unrequited love. Setsuko (Shinobu Terajima) is a forty-something, lonely single who is as much a hoarder as she is a recluse. Her social skills and graces are severely lacking, and her social circle is not much better. The relationship with her sister, Ayako (Kaho Minami) has been strained ever since Ayako stole Setsuko’s boyfriend several years earlier. They married and had a daughter, Mika (Kutsuna Shioli). Mika convinces her Aunt Setsuko to take over the English classes she committed to (and their payments) near their home in Tokyo. Setsuko Goes to the class finding its instructor (John Hartnett) very attractive. The instructor is unconventional to say the least. He gives her a blonde wig and a new

A scene from Oh Lucy! name, Lucy. He starts the one-on-one class with a hug— and you can tell that she enjoys the personal connection immensely. To her surprise, by the second class her teacher crush is gone. He is on his way to LA with none other than her niece, Mika! She is crushed. A few weeks later if she receives a postcard from her niece from a live-in motel in California. She decides to take time off to visit Mika, and her sister (Mika’s mom) insists on joining her. I know this is all starting to sound like a soap opera rather than a cool indie film.

Yes it’s melodramatic, but there are shining moments of comedy. One is where the two sisters are on the airplane heading to LA. Sitting between them is a passenger we only see for one scene — but you know who she is. She is played by Megan Mullally of the hit 1990s television show Will & Grace, When she finds she’s sitting between two sisters, she offers to move so they can sit together. They make it very clear that they would rather not! Part journey, part love triangle, Oh Lucy! delivers on laughs and scenes that nearly elevates it to poignancy. In the end you’re not left wanting more but you’re also not wishing it would have been more. Somewhere between those two places is a destination that’s worth the trip. Thanks to everyone who came to the Cape May Film Festival last weekend. It was our first real venture into a spring time slot, and a good time was had by all. The festival benefits the Teen Film Camp program in the summer, so watch out for more information about that coming soon.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I just received an invitation to my niece’s wedding and was shocked to see that it is in Las Vegas. I don’t have the money or the time to fly there, especially given that the wedding is on a Friday, which means I would have to take off Thursday and Friday. I’m a nurse and rearranging my shift is tricky. I know the family will be disappointed and give me grief but I just do not want to do this. Can’t I just say I can’t get the time off, which is partially true? And how do I make up for the fact that I am skipping the biggest day of my favorite niece’s life? — Can’t Afford It Dear Can’t The Answer Lady suggests you really think about your decision not to attend your niece’s wedding. Las Vegas is pretty affordable. If, however, you stay the course, don’t beat

Wise answers to perplexing questions

yourself up. When people decide to have a destination wedding, they’re pretty much expecting it will deter people from attending. To make up for your absence, you might want to step up the gift with perhaps jewelry — a watch for him; ear rings or a bracelet for her. Cape May is lucky to have fine jewelry stores such as Patricia Jackson, Henry’s, Mary Ann’s, Queen May and Victorious Dear Answer Lady I am a 50-year-old man who has been in a relationship for five years and very happy

with things the way they are. My significant other has drawn a line in the sand, demanding that we either get married or end it. I have to tell you, I’d rather end it than commit to a life sentence, plus I have a feeling she won’t really leave but is just bluffing and I don’t like being played. What’s wrong with me? — Commitment Phobic Dear Phobic The problem could be you, or it could be the relationship. It sounds as though your arrangement is convenient, not soul matebased. And we sense an attitude. “I don’t like being played” sounds like it is a poker game not a loving partnership. If you end it, which you seem inclined to do, do everybody a favor. Rather than waste some other person’s time, get a dog. Visit the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. Find yourself a friend in need of a home. Dogs are always happy to see you and make no demands other than to be loved, fed and let out. Maybe this unconditional love will be a teaching moment for you if you decide at some point to transition to the human side of commitment.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

’ve written about osprey quite a lot recently but it’s their time and it’s hard to get away from them. As I write, two adult bald eagle are trying to pirate a fish from an osprey behind the Center for Research and Education, here in Goshen. Last evening two birds were engaged in a spirited courtship display over Mauricetown. Apparently it was successful. This morning, wife Linda said she saw two birds copulating on the nest near the Mauricetown causeway. If the fishing is productive, it looks like were heading for another banner year. Three young per nest has been the modern average. A few decades ago the average was zero. Like eagles and peregrines, osprey productivity, too, was supressed by DDT. Many believed the bird was heading for extinction. Happily, we were wrong. If someone is motivated to nominate an emblematic bird species for Cape May County, osprey should be on your short list. Ornithologist Alexander Wilson, author of American ornithology, studied

and painted osprey in the region. He relates the story of a local resident who entreated the bar keep at Beesley’s Tavern (now Tuckahoe Inn) to prepare for him an eggnog using an osprey egg. The concoction prompted the patron to sprint for the out house. While it’s no longer an endangered species, the collecting of osprey eggs is prohibited by International treaty. So if you find yourself in the mood for eggnog, consider an alternative to osprey eggs. I also recommend that you keep a safe distance from

nesting osprey no matter what the nesting stage. While not known to be aggressive to humans, I did once see an osprey stoop upon a black-crowned night-heron and kill it. This display of redirected anger was caused by a bird bander who was banding the young in the osprey’s nest. So forceful was the attacking bird’s stoop, that the heron’s wings snapped on impact. I might also add that dislodging incubating osprey from their nest might result in nest failure. Don’t do it. Osprey often place their nests close to roads or waterways. The birds are calm when viewed from a reasonable distance. When the bird starts whistling shrilly or leaves the nest, your next step should be a step back. One more hint to ensure the safety of osprey. The birds are known to cart all manners of junk into their nests, including tangles of monofilament fishing line. Young may become entangled in these snarls resulting in injury or death. So when your reel develops a “crow’s nest,” burn the line or discard safely.
