Say Cheers To A New Brewery! Just when you thought you were spoiled for choice in this area, with a great range of wineries, breweries and a fab distillery, too... up pops another place to cruise for booze. MudHen Brewing Co., which opened this week at the old Harley-Davidson in Wildwood, is named for a junction of the old West Jersey Railroad. Today, the brewpub’s industrialrustic vibe pays homage to this history. Last Friday and Saturday, hundreds of eager patrons piled into the beautifully remodeled space for a taste of the good stuff. Good luck, guys.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What is the Earth Day theme? Yes, Earth Day has a theme every year. This time around, the focus is plastic — how we can stop it from suffocating our planet. Check out the new campaign at earthday.org.

Boy band fans, this one’s for you. Thirtyyear-old Kevin Jonas of pop-rock sensation the Jonas Brothers was spotted on Washington Street Mall in 2015. You might say he was just living up to his 2010 track, “Chillin’ in the Summertime.”

Earth Day, which is this Sunday, is the largest civic-focused day of action on the globe — one billion people in 192 countries participate. What will YOU do to celebrate and protect our little blue dot? Let us know by tweeting to @exitzeromag!

In the 1960s, when mayor Frank Gauvry introduced his plan for a pedestrian-friendly mall in the heart of Cape May, residents were skeptical. At the time, most city planning in the country revolved around car-friendly construction. But Gauvry pushed ahead and, in 1971, the mall was completed. It became an instant success, and city leaders from around the country flocked to see it. Today, it’s home to some of our most iconic businesses, as well as artisanal newcomers.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — Answer is on page 18. A man, seven feet in height, is holding a water glass above his head. He lets it fall to The Brown Room carpet without spilling a single drop of water. How could he manage to drop the glass from this height without spilling a drop of water?

Ramblings From The Editor

O

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

n April 11, the Cape May Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which launched last June, hosted Cape May Connections, a public meeting at City Hall to discuss opportunities for creating a safe and connected network of bicycle paths and trails on the island — a mission that is, I think most of us can agree, overdue. Thirty-nine passionate adults and three children turned up to learn about and show support for the cause. Leading the meeting was Melissa Miklus of Baltimore-based RK&K civil engineering firm, who remembers getting her first boogie board as a kid here. “There’s something special about this place — it’s tangible and intangible,” she said. “Whatever we do, we want to make sure we celebrate that. I’m not the person who comes in and paves 200 miles of trails.” But Melissa IS a person who could advise us on ecologically sensitive, character-preserving, cost-effective strategies for making this place more bike-friendly. The city put together the beginnings of a plan a couple of years ago in partnership with New Jersey

Department of Transportation, but it lacked community input. This time around, that will be prime focus. Melissa started off by asking the crowd about priorities. “I would like to end the false belief that roadways are unsafe for cyclists,” said Peter Hardy, of the Cape May Hustle cycling group. He also leads a group of students on their bikes from the Coast Guard base to the elementary school and back every day. Peter is understandably frustrated that, despite a $300,000 grant awarded to the city three years ago for

this purpose, no painted bike lanes along this route have yet to materialize. The Department of Transportation is dragging its heels on approval. “We don’t belong on sidewalks; we belong on roadways and with more lines and signage, we can make that happen,” he said. Melissa went over some options — bike lanes, shared-lane markings, hybrid solutions and bike boulevards among them — and she shared a system for prioritizing ideas. But she has not been hired as a consultant yet. Advisory committee member Bill Murray told us we are still in the exploratory stages. Next steps would include composing an action table, nailing funding sources and creating a budget. For what it’s worth, we can’t wait. Seriously jazzed for this weekend? You should be. World-class musicians will be playing in America’s Original Seaside Resort from Friday through Sunday. Yep... it’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival, a twice-a-year musical spectacular that puts a lot of life, energy and dollars into this town. I will be in Scotland, but I hope you get your butts out and enjoy a fabulous weekend of swinging music!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Steven Gremmert from Nauti Spirits is up. How long have you been bartending? Twelve years. Favorite drink to make? Water. Haha. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer comes in and tells me what the bar needs. For example, a retractable roof above the bar on the deck, or some eclectic spirit that we don’t carry just so when they stop in every few months, we have it. Biggest tip you ever received? $1,000. Wow!

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Harmonic Rhythm - ABV: 5.5% Ginger ale, lime, and your favorite neutral spirit make one helluva cocktail. That was the impetus behind this brew. A hefty dose of freshly-minced ginger added to the boil garnished with a hint of fresh mint and juices of lemon and lime.

Collier’s Liquor Store Breca Old Vine Garnacha from Spain - $16.99 This jam packed red from Spain drinks more like a California Cab. It’s full bodied and boasts a deep, rich, lingering blackberry flavor. This wine over delivers for the price. Pairs well with lamb or other gamey meats.

Produce Report Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with Christina Albert from Beach Plum Farm, she informed us that red kale is in season. Did you know that in Scotland, kale provided such a substantial part of the diet that the word became synonymous with food in some Scottish dialects. To be “off one’s kail” is to feel too ill to eat.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: MudHen Brewing Company, in a former HarleyDavidson outlet on the main drag into Wildwood. The vibe: Picture 5,500 square feet of industrial rusticness. MudHen was gutted and remodeled. The brick exterior? Reclaimed from Philly industrial sites. The wood inside? Reclaimed from old wine barrels. The layout: On the main floor are two concrete bars —the 40-foot one provides a view of the production area and its 15-barrel brew system. Through glass garage doors you’ll see an outdoor patio lined by pine trees and complete with fire pits. Upstairs in the loft area is the tasting room, where you can sample beers with names and flavor profiles inspired by Wildwood’s history. The whole thing is cool without being gimmicky. The menu: This barbeque-and-smoked-seafood-heavy menu was designed by celebrity chef Brian Duffy of Food Network fame. The conversation: Katie is afraid of saying anything because she will be quoted. But we did learn that she gets panicky when she wants several things from a menu. Her dad, Dave, who was also dining with us, has to remind her that she can, in fact, come back at a later time for more. The order: We got a LOT (obvi) but some of our faves were the green eggs and ham mac and cheese (smoked ham, pesto, bacon dust, cheddar bread crumbs, fried egg) and the rooster burger (smoked chicken, tomato, bacon and rosemary jam, fried egg, swiss cheese, onion brioche). The morning surf cocktail is as good as its name, the 1883 IPA is a win for hopheads, and the MudHen wheat beer has refreshing hints of citrus, orange peel and ginger. The staff: We challenge you to find a nicer bar manager than Amanda Axelsson. And shout-out to food runner Simba who we also met at Fins (and who still has the coolest name ever). The name: The brewpub gets its moniker from a junction of the West Jersey Railroad that carried tourists in the late 1800s from Cape May Court House to North Wildwood. Because it often derailed, stranding riders in the marsh, locals nicknamed it Mud Hen. But no worries! Today, a meal at MudHen is one way to help keep your vacation — wait for it — on track. Badum-ching! We’ll be here all year, folks.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Mike, Katie, Sammy and Emmie Sheeran from Absecon, NJ on their way to Congress Hall. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? No-one. They’re too delicious! Undertow

T

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

he Return of the Undertow: This time... it’s personal. We are but one day from the big 4/20 (cough, cough, pass) party at Rio Station. It’s this Friday, 4/20, duh, and will not be your average, run-of-the-mill Rio Station Friday night. Oh no. We’ll be doing karaoke in the big room on the big screen with the big bahoivitz! An array of Cape May beers will be taking over the taps. There’s going to be a costume contest (the theme is there IS no theme; ANARCHY!). Parties are great, but the impetus behind this shindig is to introduce the Rio’s Munchie Menu, the new standard for bar and late night fare. Head Chef Rick Rutherford (pupil who became master) has whipped up a gastro pub-inspired menu to pair with their impressive selection of craft beers. A hipster’s dream! So come on out for a rollicking good time and sing a bunch of songs I can make fun of in next week’s column. My favorite micro-brew is Miller Lite. Fight me. Speaking of Rio, I ran into Bob Riper and Claire Reeves as I loaded in my karaoke gear. I explained it was karaoke night and Claire cor-

rected me. “You mean Terry O’ke.” BAZINGA! Bob and Claire are staunch supporters of my Beatles band and local music in general. And remember, no matter how ripe you are, Bob is always Riper. Like a fine banana. Also bumped into prodigal bartender Sean Haggerty at the Rio. Hard to believe it’s been five years since he pulled up stakes and moved up north. Rumor has it he’ll be back in the area for good later this summer. You may remember Sean’s dad Dan from TV’s Grizzly Adams. This statement is 100% false, but I just can’t resist a good Dan Haggerty mention.

One final Rio Station note this week (until my Cape May jobs start, it’s all I have!), I’d like to wish a fond farewell to Mike Taylor; package store guru, replacer of empty kegs and enthusiastic karaoke yeller as he heads out to the left coast to pursue his dream job. I forget what it was, but I’m happy he got it. We are a scant ONE WEEK AWAY from the revival of my first original show, Downton Stabbey, at Iron Pier Craft House. The show debuted at Elaine’s in 2015 (more on this later) and has been adapted to fit its new surroundings. The (metaphorical) curtain rises next Thursday, April 26. Dinner seating begins at 6:30. For tickets to what is no doubt going to be an... interesting... show, go to cabanasonthebeach.com and click on SHOP. In case you were wondering, NO... you don’t need to know a darn thing about Downton Abbey to enjoy the show. In fact, you don’t need to know anything about anything to enjoy the show. Though it helps to have a taste for the absurd. Lots of absurd. I was remiss last week in not giving you the rundown on my new Billy Joel tribute band,

The Strangers. Most importantly, there’s me. There’s also Al Olivero on drums and Sue Polcer on keys, horns and flutes. (Al and Sue are Love Me Dudes holdovers.) Steve Kyle is the guitar player (a MUCH harder gig than it sounds... if you buy Steve’s complaining). Walt Sapsai, Jr slappa-da-bass, which he slappa da better than anybody. This is just fact. And Dave Landis on first chair piano rounds out the team. He’s a real mucker and grinder on the half-boards, good for the organ-i-zation. Together we make a lot of good noise. Next show is May 12 at Cabanas, 7pm. Bitching about Taylor Swift’s cover of “September” is the premier event of the First World Problems Olympics. Cry for Attention of the Week: Pam and Steve (but mostly Pam) Brockman, who heard about the return of Undertow then LIT UP my Facebook asking, “Why aren’t WE in your column?” in what I can only imagine was her standard high-pitched whine. Congratulations guys! Now you’re in The Undertow! (I am so gonna pay for that...) Precisely 42 of you may be aware that I have started a YouTube channel. I talk about the fun things I do on a given day; gigs I’m playing, books I’m reading, kids I’m beating, etc. I also use it as a platform to promote my upcoming theatrical, online and, eventually, film productions. I mention this only because, while I enjoy sharing my interests with others, I am hoping it will become a money-making platform. Very, very eventually. In order to monetize a YouTube channel you must first reach 1,000 subscribers who’ve consumed 4,000 hours of your content. I am currently at (drum roll please...) 42 subscribers and 67 hours. I entrust you, my loyal readers, to go to YouTube.com/TerryNOBrien and send those numbers skyrocketing. Once I’m rich, I promise... I will forget every single one of you. I’d like to close this week with a few words on where the hell I’ve been the last five years. Longtime readers will remember when I gave up the glamorous

April 19, 2018 title of World’s Greatest FullTime Karaoke Host (2005-2009) to work at Morey’s Piers as the World’s Okayest Haunted House Manager (Ghost Ship, 20102014). Those who really know me know this all followed two stints at Elaine’s Dinner Theater (19931999, 2002-2004). In the years following I always wondered if I’d give acting another shot (dozens of failed film and TV auditions notwithstanding). When Elaine’s called in 2014 to assist with a project (I had to decline) it started a conversation that led to my third tour of duty at the theater, this time as Artistic Director. The Big Mahoff. Everything went well. Until it didn’t. For those asking why I’m no longer there... I don’t know. However, they are free to run their business how they see fit, and if I wasn’t part of their plans, so be it. From 2015-2017 I was given free reign over the theater, and produced a number of shows I’m proud of (Downton Stabbey, The Mostly Dead, The Pink Panther Rides Again, Sherlock Holmes & the Werewolf of London, Young Dracula), one I’m only slightly proud of (Sherlock Holmes & the Baffled Butlers) and one Christmas standard (Scrooge the Musical). It was great renewing my on-stage partnership with Parker Smith (retirement!), getting to work with John Alvarez, discovering young talent like Rebecca Sundstrom, Kevin Ebner, Amy Plantarich, Steven Church and Miranda DeLong and working with fine character actors like Lisa Weck, Amanda Brough and Jeff Sharkey. (The O’Donnell kids, Errol, Lennon and Ashe, may have been the highlight). While I’m certain I’m forgetting more than a few, it was my pleasure to share the stage. Perhaps we’ll do so again one day. Was not one second on that stage I was not having the time of my life. Next week I’ll be back with more ways you can all help me make money and regale you with all the exhilarating things I’ve done! Oh, the things I’ll do! ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

must admit I enjoyed that documentary program The Walking Dead on the televisual device, even after one of my vile grand-nephews pointed out to me that it is not real. I was so shocked that he relented and admitted that while of course genuine, the situations are what they call “scripted” for purposes of drama. Which at the same time disappoints and pleases me, because zombies are not to be trifled with. None of of who have ventured into Wildwood on a Saturday night in the summer season are unfamiliar with hordes of rampaging cannibalistic undead, but even so, these are tame compared to the real and actual zombies that shamble the earth. We first encountered them a century ago, here in Cape May, when that bombastic English explorer, Burton, brought one back from somewhere that he claimed was “Darkest Africa” but I suspect was merely Philly. Either way, the raggedy, rotting mess of a man was paraded through town, where holiday makers paid a farthing to be allowed to go close to his cage for the thrill of him trying to bite them. Well, of course, some maroon was too slow

and got nipped on the hand, whereupon he also turned into a foaming, shambling monster. Less enlightened cities would, when facing a zombie plague, have simply burned them and moved along. But not Cape May — this is the town that brought you bear barmen, monkey lifeguards and elephant taxis. So we stowed the zombie in the fort on the beach, and hatched a plan for free, tireless seasonal labor! We simply let the zombies loose for a night, and they bit only those visitors and townspeople too slow of foot and thought

to escape: it was a perfect Darwinian move, too (that chap used to winter in Cape May, did you know? He was fascinating once you stopped him talking incessantly about that survival of the fittest stuff). In the morning, we rounded them up with nets and cattle prods, and after a wee bit of a struggle making them put on their new uniforms (smart slacks and blazers, with little buttons proclaiming: “I Might be Dead, But I Can Still Help You!” along with armbands saying “Do Not Feed”) we were up and running. When you remove the need for smoke breaks, alcohol breaks, flirting breaks and toilet breaks, the efficiency gains are remarkable. We fed them a mostly vegetarian diet, unless we were short on vegetarians, in which case they would eat people from Ocean City. We might have had an unblemished summer, too, if our zombie cabana boys and girls hadn’t coincided with the Summer Fat Camp booking for the hotels. Looking back, 300 rotund oiled visitors in little swimsuits, roasting cheerfully on the beach, was too much for even our well-behaved zombies to bear.

I

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Cape May Designer Show House

made big home improvement plans this winter. While the snow piled up, I bingewatched HGTV. When the power failed, I grabbed a flashlight and read “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning” by Margareta Magnusson. I vowed to beautify my life once the weather cleared. Now, spring is here, and my excuses are gone. Time to clean house. Magnusson’s Swedish death cleaning is like Marie Kondo’s techniques for tidying up, with the reminder that your stuff will be a burden to your heirs. Instead of asking yourself whether an item to be purged brings YOU joy, Magnusson asks whether anyone will be happy that you saved it. For most things, the answer is no. Sure, the kids want your wedding picture, but do they want the love notes sent by your middle school boyfriend? Your college essays on German literature? The wedding gift that has remained in its box for decades? No. Toss it. Sell it. Donate it. Isn’t that better? Once your house is clutter free, make it beautiful. Take a tour of the Designer Show

House for inspiration — it’s like walking through your favorite HGTV show. Professional designers have lent their talents to the historic 1911 John P. Forsythe House at 1601 Beach Avenue, and proceeds from tickets will benefit the Mid-Altantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC). The home — dubbed “Our Fan-ta-sea” by owners Patrick and Kristen McGonigal — has undergone a “multi-million dollar transformation.” There are eight bedrooms, a spiral staircase, and even a dry sauna in this three bedroom mansion, and each visitor will receive a fullcolor program book with details about the

designers and products used in the home. The Designer Show House will be open to the public from April 27- May 24, May 29-June 14, August 24-September 6, and October 11-31, with guided tours from 1pm to 4pm. You can combine the house tour with a trolley tour. Buy your tickets through MAC — call 609884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org for more information. Admission is $30 for adults and $15 for children 3-12. The designers have given you plenty of fodder for inspiration, and some of their techniques are especially useful for a Cape May home. Open storage — which you can do now that you’ve ditched the clutter — makes it easy for guests or renters to find things in your beach home. The dishes you use every day become part of the decor. The perfectly placed reading chair draped with a cozy Afghan invites you to continue your beach book. Fresh flowers add life to every room, and remind you to treat yourself to a few blooms. Light the candles you’ve been saving. Use the good dishes and the guest towels. Next week: Cape May Stage

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

S

ome directors make names for themselves by creating blockbusters (Spielberg), some for bloodbaths (Tarantino), but how about a name synonymous with oddball? Wes Anderson comes top of mind. Some say Anderson is too quirky, and some say he’s not quirky enough. His latest film, Isle of Dogs, has garnered praise, apathy, and controversy as well. Although I enjoy Wes Anderson movies, I’m not a groupie. In fact, if I hear a criticism that the director is “too out there” I can understand and won’t put up a fight. There is something just disturbing and endearing enough in his films to make them work. When I saw a trailer for Isle of Dogs, I didn’t mark my calendar for the release date, but I did make a mental note. The premise is simple. Set in the nottoo-distant future, the cat-loving leader of a fictitious Japanese city banishes all dogs to a remote island landfill off the coast. His distant nephew makes a fearless and desperate attempt to find his lost dog, Spots, which was

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs is typically quirky one of the first to be exiled. Simple as that. There are a dozen or so celebrities who voice the dogs: Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson… even Yoko Ono. Anderson attracts this caliber of celebrity because of his ideas are top shelf and his execution is sound. Even though it’s an animated movie about talking dogs, this film won’t amuse little kids. In fact, it may scare them a little. This is not Disney. And maybe that’s what’s so appealing about this and Anderson’s

other animated film, Fantastic Mr Fox (2009). They are made for adults, which isn’t to say they have explicit content. It’s more that they have an adult mood and mature tone. For some, that tone is not culturally sensitive — more vocal critics say it is racist. I’ve not seen any Wes Anderson films as racist — even this one. Certainly, it’s set in a futuristic Japanese city, so there are all the audiovisual trappings that come with that (think language, imagery, etc). Still, the film never crosses the line to be insulting or exploitive. This film’s visuals are compelling (as with any Anderson film). Its sounds are equally engaging. This film, like most from Anderson, has a flavor that is unmistakably his. This six-time Oscar nominee has become a critic favorite, but his audience has broadened much. His films do well at the box office, but his most impressive figures are about the same for Spielberg’s lackluster films. Still I give them high marks for innovation and artistic quality. So still an acquired taste, but add another favorite to his selection.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My 60-something mother insists on wearing designer stilettos when she goes out to dinner. She has fallen twice and turned her ankle once. Is there nothing I can say to make her start wearing sensible shoes? And bonus — when she isn’t falling and twisting in them, she clearly has trouble putting one foot in front of the other. She often loses her balance and ends up bumping into a table, a waiter, or a doorway. It’s like watching a drunken flamingo. — Concerned Daughter Dear Concerned The Answer Lady takes you at your word that you are concerned for your mother’s welfare and not coveting her shoe collection. If you have lived your life as a fashionista, it is hard to give up the spark that drives your joie de vivre (Frenchy for joy of life). Your job is to

Wise answers to perplexing questions

find the middle road. Surely she will not be adverse to a trip to Casale’s for a pair of, no, not stilettos, but definitely fine shoes for those more conventional dinners and extremely smart sandals for warmer weather, which will hopefully come our way soon. Then maybe you can switch roles and you can be the drunken flamingo once in a while. Dear Answer Lady My brother and sister-in-law refuse to cook. They eat out three to four nights a week. The other nights they either get take

out or thaw out something from the frozen food section of the grocery store. I am a strong believer in cooking whole foods and I can see the toll not doing so takes on people, particularly them. Their failure to go the market, get a chicken and throw it in the oven is starting to show — literally in their expanding waistlines and healthwise. They are chronically nursing some affliction. Any advice? — Health Nut Dear Health Nut Being right isn’t always a winning strategy in persuading people to change their lifestyle. They have to make that decision on their own. But here’s the thing, it does requires organization and meal planning so you are not trying figure out what to eat on your way home from a hard day’s work. You might think about helping them to prepare a week’s menu. Introduce them to Gaiss’ and Westside Market. Farm markets like Duckie’s, Park Central and LeGates will be opening soon. Beach Plum Farm is another terrific source. Cooking does not need to be a chore, but it does take practice and the will to change.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

’ve never heard anyone rank brown thrasher as their “favorite bird.” Yet the thrasher is a gifted singer and industrious species whose foraging tricks include digging for grubs with their sturdy, sickle-shaped bills. In winter they join assorted other hardy species in berry thickets. But the bird in my yard this morning is almost certainly a migrant, ferried north on last night’s southerly breezes. My partiality to thrashers goes back to childhood, where I used to make the funding of their twig nests my summer preoccupation. Lined with rootlets, these carelessly built platforms housed the bird’s three-tofive finely flecked blue-green eggs. Set about four feet above the forest floor, they were just within reach of my six-year-old hands. Once, while parting the outer leaves with my hands, I found myself eye-to-eye with an incubating bird who rewarded my inquisitiveness with a stout peck on my nose. Her vengeance delivered, she quickly departed, leaving me to admire her catch of eggs. In England, it was common practice for

young bird enthusiasts to plunder eggs. In the US, the practice of egg collecting seems to have gone out of fashion with the end of the Victorian Age. In Cape May, the fox-colored, spotbreasted birds can be found in Cape May Point State Park, Higbee Beach and South Cape May. Some new to birding may see the thrasher’s heavily spotted breast and are reminded of another woodland denizen, wood thrush. But wood thrush have round spots, the spots on thrasher are more tear-

shaped. More determining still is the length of the tails. wood thrush have short tails, and their folded wings covering half that tail. Thrashers have tails that are as long as their body. Note, too, thrasher’s bright yellow eye. Wood thrush have baleful black eyes but to see these details may require binoculars or place you in danger of a peck on the nose. My youthful exuberance, notwithstanding, wild birds are best studied at a distance. Binoculars, the defining tool of bird study, allows bird watchers to study birds at distances that allow birds to behave naturally. If you want to see brown thrasher, you are advised to go before May while birds are establishing territories and males sing well into the morning. If not keyed up on some conspicuous perch, search for thrashers on the forest floor, where they will be flipping last year’s leaves aside in search of beetles, caterpillars and other insects. Gardeners could do worse than share their yard with thrashers. Don’t trim the rose bush and one might take a liking to your yard.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

LAYLA is an affectionate and playful young Airedale mix breed dog. She is comfortable and polite in the house when she visits the homes of volunteers. She loves dog toys, especially those with a good squeaker. Layla’s previous owners reported that she is good with children. An active family would be a good match for Layla. Adopt today!

SHEBA is a mannerly, playful girl who loves people and enjoys a good game of fetch in the yard with a tennis ball. She loves to take long walks and has good leash manners. Sheba is also crate trained which makes the transition to a new home an easier process. Previously she lived with children. Stop by the shelter and give sweet Sheba a forever home!

When WALL E’s owner passed away, he was brought to the shelter. We have learned that WallE loves running and playing fetch. He happily retrieves balls to continue play. He likes squeaky toys and stuffed animals as well. On home visits, WallE loves interacting with people. He is calm in the house and very well mannered. Give Wall E a second chance!

SIMMONS has lost his home. He was found wandering around looking for a safe place to live.
