Now in its seventh year, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival is a celebration of music with more than 30 sets of jazz, blues, New Orleans jazz, R&B and more. For the first time ever, the festival kicked off with a parade that started at Convention Hall and worked its way down the promenade, up Decatur Street and ended at Washington Street Mall. It was a fabulous introduction to a rockin’ weekend. Some of the festival headliners included The Baylor Project, Deva Mahal, William Bell & the Memphis Soul Revue, Chris Botti and the Joey Alexander Trio. Congratulations to festival director Michael Kline on another brilliant job. Top: The High and Mighty Brass Band Left: The New Sound Brass Band

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What is America’s favorite tree? The oak! In 2004, the National Arbor Day Foundation took a poll, and the oak won. That’s why it’s now our official, national tree. Fun fact: Only one in 10,000 acorns manages to become an oak tree. Amazing what you find out here...

Local Landmark

In 1998, Julia Roberts was spotted shopping in Celebrate Cape May while wearing a baseball cap, tee-shirt and jeans. From there, she took a horse-and-carriage ride through town. Perhaps it’s time for this pretty woman to make a return trip!

Arbor Day is this Friday! The holiday originated in Nebraska in 1872 and within 20 years was celebrated by every state (except for Delaware). To take part, hug one of the island’s many trees, something that sets us apart from other shore towns.

Cape May’s beachfront used to be small, rocky and not at all conducive to sunbathing. When the Army Corp of Engineers built the canal connecting harbor and Delaware Bay to protect American ships from attack during WWII, they created an erosion problem. In 1991, under a directive from President George Bush, the federal government allocated money for a dredging program to restore the beaches. This was the first federally funded dredging project of its kind in the state.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — A Cape May doctor and a trolley driver are both in love with the same woman, an attractive girl named Sarah. The trolley driver had to go on a long trip that would last a week. Before he left, he gave Sarah seven apples. Why? Answer is on page 18.

Ramblings From The Editors

M

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

ost of the talk at the April 16 open house on Cape May’s reexamination of its master plan would have seemed very familiar to anyone who paid attention back in 2003, when the last master plan was completed. Or to the reexamination of that plan in 2009. Or to the master plan before that. Or any of the plans stretching back over the decades. As speaker after speaker had their say during the two-hour meeting, it kept coming back to parking. And to the long-championed, much-reviled idea of a parking garage. In some cases, it was the same people making the same point they’ve made over those decades. Among them at the Monday meeting was Wister Dougherty, known throughout Cape May as Barney, a local fixture and self-described old guy. He was a young guy, he told the crowd of about 150 people in Convention Hall, when Mayor Walter C. Wright asked him to join Cape May’s first planning board back in the 1960s. Even then, he said, parking was an issue. “Parking is essential for Cape May to

survive,” he said at the Monday meeting. “We need a parking facility. We need a parking garage. I know that’s going to go over like a big bomb, but we need a parking garage.” By now, the broad strokes of the discussion should seem familiar. There’s not nearly enough parking around the mall in the summer. More bikes, better shuttles and remote sites can help, some. But not as much as would a centrally located parking garage, bringing more business and building the economy.

Bill Bezaire, the longtime chairman of the planning board, said after the meeting that parking study after study after study offered the same conclusion: Cape May needs more parking. “You really have to build a garage to do that,” he said. Some of the speakers on Monday said it would not need to be a hideous concrete bunker squatting among the tree-lined Victorian streets. It is possible to design a good-looking parking garage, they insisted. Of course it is. There are cons, of course, or else it would have been done long ago. One speaker called it the third rail of Cape May politics. It will be expensive, in the multiple millions of dollars at least. It has also been said that it’s a year-round solution to three-month problem, although those three months have been extended to five or six months at this point. For proof, try to find a parking space within a mile of the West Cape May Christmas Parade in December. There were other issues discussed. While business is booming, Cape May’s year-round population continues to slip. Summer traffic

remains overwhelming. Some at the meeting spoke of working on some of these issues islandwide, building closer ties to West Cape May, Cape May Point and Lower Township. Other issues are already being worked on, such as making the town better for bikes and widening the promenade. One gentleman wants a senior center, suggesting developer and business owner Curtis Bashaw could donate a vacant shop (which is, to say the least, highly presumptuous — we’re assuming he doesn’t know what Cape Resorts already donate to the community). “There’s no program there that I can see for the welfare and entertainment of senior citizens,” said Gus Mosso, questioning why Cape May does not have a senior center when many other towns do. “My concern is I can’t wait 10 years to have one.” At the end of the meeting, Bashaw said he has plans for those empty stores, to make way for a needed Acme expansion. He suggested Cape May’s planning is too afraid of density, pointing out that the most beloved and beautiful streets in town could not be rebuilt without extensive variances under current zoning rules. Cape May doesn’t just want new McMansions, he said, so the zoning rules should reflect what’s best about the town, not try to imitate a suburban setting. Bashaw wants a goal of the new master plan to be to bring in hundreds of new year-round residents. He also advocated working with all the municipalities south of the canal. “If we want to have a school on the island, we have to be able to think about having an islandwide collaboration,” he said. T.J. O’Hara, whose family has Uncle Bill’s and Sunset Liquors, wants to see more apartments. The town needs young families. Businesses need employees. But for most, living in Cape May is way out of reach. O’Hara described himself as one of the lucky ones. “A lot of people want to come

April 26, 2018 back to the island and can’t afford it,” he said. Census data show Cape May’s population declining. Several of the many speakers raised this as an issue, and it was brought up in the 2003 master plan as well. How can a town attract and keep young residents? Some of the recommendations would not have seemed familiar at all to Cape May residents in the 1970s or ’80s, including a call for citywide wifi and another for a tourism app. Other things have changed. The 2003 report raised concerns about the size and condition of the former Convention Hall, built in 1965 to replace one demolished by the 1962 storm. In 2012, the city opened the doors on a $10 million building, where a crowd that would have been packed in like sardines if the meeting were held in City Hall had plenty of room to stretch out and comfortable seats. Craig Hurless of Polistina and Associates of Egg Harbor Township opened the meeting with a PowerPoint presentation on what needs to be addressed and the timetable for a new master plan. The consulting engineering and planning company has a $47,500 contract to guide Cape May through the master plan reexamination process. Over the summer, an advisory committee will begin a survey, with a series of workshop meetings expected in early winter. A plan could be ready for review and adoption by February of 2019. A city’s master plan doesn’t make any laws, but guides the planning and zoning boards and the city in setting future zoning law. According to Hurless, the plan is to get the entire community in on making that plan so that the next one will reflect the priorities and concerns of that community in the decade to come. Hopefully by then, we won’t STILL be discussing the idea of a parking garage.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Kenny Strain from Fins Bar and Grille is up. How long have you been bartending? Six years. Favorite drink to make? A muddled old-fashioned. I make the best on the planet! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer asks what we have on tap. There are 20 beers! “Here’s a menu” I say with a smile. Biggest tip you ever received? $1,000 from Macy Gray. When she tried to walk away...did she stumble?

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Summer Catch - ABV: 5.5% Citrusy and refreshing, notes of orange peel and tropical fruits dominate this Belgian-style wheat ale. Lightly dry-hopped with Citra and Amarillo hops to give it an American twist, this crushable ale is complex yet approachable.

Sunset Liquors Les Petit Gueissard Rosè 2015 - $10.99 Pale peach-pink in color with aromas of tart strawberries. Subtle strawberry and grapefruit notes zip along to the dry, citrus zest finish. Manageable on its own, but pairs well with light snacks and spicy food.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The park job: Similar to that executed by Austin Powers in the International Man of Mystery film, according to Katie. Jack was driving. In his defense, his chariot is a temperamental and sputtery Subaru Outback with more than 240,000 miles. The place: Tisha’s on Washington Street Mall. The server: The lovely Karmen. Pronounced like Karmann Ghia, which is a car Jack used to own (and park, presumably better.) The vibe: Upscale without being fussy. Everything is clean — the food, the design, the space. The food: Diane ordered the crab cake tacos, which had the perfect crunch to non-crunch ratio. Jack and Katie split the lobster mac and cheese and a tasty chef’s burger, because sharing is caring. Mike went for the delectable bacon, egg and cheeseburger with fries. The music: The 1939, big band hit “In the Mood” by Glenn Miller, whose mysterious disappearance at the age of 40 was likely due to a plane crash over the English Channel. The conversation: Rom-coms! Jack’s a big fan of “harmless and fun” Hugh Grant flicks like Notting Hill. Another of of his favorites is 27 Dresses, and he’s not ashamed. Mike can’t name a single romcom he’s seen, although he’s sure he HAS seen a couple, maybe with Sandra Bullock. Diane finds Ryan Reynolds annoying but can’t articulate why. Number of inappropriate jokes made by Jack: Thirty-seven. We can’t repeat them here, but believe us when we tell you he was on a roll. Mike nearly choked on his iced tea. Thankfully, there are no pearl-clutchers in our group. The dessert: Katie ran across the mall for candy from Cape May Sweet House. Because gummy worms never go out of style. How you know it was good: We ate so much, Jack’s shirt button popped at the end of the meal. “There must be something wrong with the button,” he said. Now that’s a glass-half-full attitude if we ever heard one.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Joshua Jr and Miguel “beach bum,” a retiree from Cape May, who were ambushed while strolling the mall. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Their friends. Undertow

U

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

ndertow. If we knew we were going to live this long we’d have taken better care of ourselves. Tonight is the big night! (Unless you’re reading this after Thursday, in which case the big night was Thursday.) “Downton Stabbey,” a show I wrote, debuts at Iron Pier Craft House (upstairs from Cabanas) to a sold out house! If you miss it, you should feel sad. But not too sad; we do it again May 31. At its core, “Downton Stabbey” is a throwback to the style of theater I cut my teeth on in the 1990s. Fast-paced, a little absurd and stuffed with jokes (a few of which are even funny). There’s also a little singing and dancing. Very little dancing, in my case. More like rhythmic rippling. The plot, such as it is, involves a murder and the reading of a will. Simple, right? You’d think so but you’d be wrong. The show is an homage to the comedy of my youth; Monty Python, Mel Brooks, “Fawlty Towers” and Beatles movies. Jaysus I’m old. It’s also a murder mystery, meaning a few lucky guests might walk out with a prize of moderate value, assuming anyone can figure out what the hell

is going on long enough to solve the mystery. “Downton Stabbey” is brought to you by the Iron Pier and TKO Productions. TKO is the fledgling production company I’ve started with my partner Kevin Ebner. (BUSINESS partner, wise guys.) I’m the T, he’s the K, the O is... just kind of there. This show is the first step on our march to global domination. Over the course of 2018 we hope to produce another live show or two, develop several online properties, and start production on our first feature film. (We’ll also make a commercial for your small business.) Exciting times.

Kevin is not only my production partner but a pretty fair-to-middlin’ actor himself, tackling several roles in the play. He’s also our resident hunk, so even if he forgets a line, at least he’s still cute. (BUSINESS partner, I said.) But sorry, ladies, Kevin is spoken for by the fetching Amy Plantarich (sounds like it’s spelled) who plays a couple parts of her own and managed to herd these cats into something resembling choreography. Amy daylights at the Wetlands Institute, making sure the land is still wet, or some such. Lil’ Becca Sundstrom brings sassiness and class (classassiness?) to her roles, and also said nice things to me at Billy Joel Night a few weeks ago, flanked by her sisters Ashley and Debbie, forever securing a place in my heart. Me? I only play one guy. But I play it, like, really good. But the crown jewel of this cast, and I still can’t believe we got him, is Chris Nagle. You read that right; Chris. Nagle. CHRIS FREAKIN’ NAGLE! Yes, the same man whose dulcet tones lull you to sleep as you drive home from work listening to 94.3 WIBG, is bringing some much-needed pedigree and luster

to our little show. Chris, aka The Pleather Mist, hit the Wife Lottery when he married Shannon Baker (Channel, according to his autocorrect) a few years back, and they’ve now got a little one at home eating up all their food and money, and another little one on the way. When I offered Chris the part he said, “God, yes! Please! Anything to get me out of the house!” Then I made him wear a dress. These are the facts as I know them. If you would like to toss your support to TKO Productions, I’ve got a Patreon where you can pledge a monthly donation. (We’re non-denominational, we’ll accept any denomination.) $1 a month can really make a difference. Patreon.com/terryoke1. Special shout-out to Iron Pier and Cabanas managers Debbie Felice and Donna Russo who, for the last two months, have let us in after hours, in the cold, on their days off, to allow us to rehearse. That’s it. No jokes, no snark. We’re just really appreciative of your time/patience. And all the free booze. (Kidding, Payton Bowman! Just kidding. We paid for most of it. [still kidding].) And one more yelp to Cabanas ace sound man John Fullerton, who has joined our little troupe as light and sound designer (somehow less, and yet more, glamorous than it sounds). John owns South Jersey Sound & Recording (and has produced some pretty sweet videos of Love Me Dudes and The Strangers because he’s a filmmaker, as well). So if you’ve got a bunch of original, mediocre folk songs you’d like to record, John will charge you a reasonable rate to do so! (That’s a pull-quote, John.) I’m going to miss rehearsing this show. 50% because of the camaraderie among the cast, 50% for our post-rehearsal beers at the Ugly Mug, aka Chris Nagle Gets To Talk To Adults Hour. Amber and Kaitlyn pour a fine martini, and Dwight Dunbracco is always happy to see me. I can tell because his lip twitches. Check out his band, Escape Plan, with Michael Dowe and Geoff Moran. They

April 26, 2018 play an eclectic mix of songs and always let me sing one of them. The 4/20 party at Rio Station last Friday was a blazer. (Heh.) It was the first 2018 appearence of karaoke super couple Bill Hofer and Princess Ginger (nee Janice Franks). She is a classy lady who’s always dressed to the 9s and sings an array of torchy jazz songs. And he’s Bill. (I kid because I love.) Not only are they truly good friends, they are truly good people, as evidenced by their recent adoption of an abandoned hurricane puppy in St. Croix, where they spend their winters. Kudos and woof. The lovely Maryse Selit also popped into the Rio on Friday. She and her husband Howard (a tall drink of water in his own right... wow, this is my gayest column ever) have been regular karaoke visitors for about a decade. (She sings, he listens, and they both recommend the Cuban Burger.) Maryse is recently retired from entertainment law, now pursuing her dream of being a singer and... wait a minute... I smell a sitcom, Parker Smith! But the highlight of the evening was Rick Rutherford, Jr and Liz Franco’s supple, moving rendition of “What Does the Fox Say?’ by Ylvis. If you ever want to see a speaker melt, hand Ricky a microphone. (That’s a volume joke. He’s loud, not bad. And sometimes sounds just like a fox. A fox that fronts a death metal band.) I still can’t believe I live in a world where the Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champs. YouTube Statistics of the Week: I am currently at 42 subscribers and 67 hours of consumed content and need 1000 and 4000, respectively, to start making money. Come on, people! It’s almost like you don’t want me to be an internet millionaire. youtube.com/TerryNOBrien. Lastly this week; two years ago last Saturday I was sitting in the empty dining room at Elaine’s, streaming XPN radio, writing a new show, when I heard the words I still can’t believe. “Breaking news out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prince is dead.” I’ll be back 4 U next week.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have become aware of this new evil that goes under the name of Heir Bee And Bee, I think. One of my vile descendants was using it on his cellular computing device the other day, and although he tried to hide it when I caught him in the act in the Drawing Room of the Mansion, I gently persuaded him to show and tell, by dint of striking him on his hindquarters with my leather boot. Which I had my manservant Kitchener put on for just that very task, as he is long of leg and can deliver a much more impressive kick. Once all the details were clear, I had learned two things. First, that there exists a service whereby any Tom, Dick or Harry can pretend their shack is a fine summer abode and extract cash from unsuspecting visitors for the pleasure of staying in it. “Steps from the beach”, I learned, means a 20-minute drive. “Cute” means the furnishings are from yard sales and dumpsters. “Sleeps six” means there is a single bed and a stack of wooden pallets in the yard. And “partial AC” means the house next door has it and that if you ask nicely you can sit outside the badly sealed

window in the back of the house and get a faint cool waft of air once in a while. Second, that my conniving worm of a great-whatever-he-is had been using that very “applicator” to rent out parts of The D’Catur Mansion for this same task! The nerve of the boy! Apparently for only a few hundred dollars a night, one can stay in the guest wing and enjoy the full run of the facilities, except those times when “the eccentric housekeeper might be passing by”. I’ve no idea who that is, but gather the visitors must then conceal, as

the old chap likes to play hide and seek. If I meet him, I will tell him my thoughts on adults playing children’s games. But it did make sense of some recent and odd encounters, whereby I had been passing through room and heard giggling, but could see no one. And that time I came up behind a trio of strangers all peeking around the corner from the Library to the Trophy Room (disused) and whispering, “I think he’s coming!” Well, I set about them with my walking cane and they fled into the night, squealing like the Spring Shoebie Sacrifice to the Pagan Gods, and I thought no more of it until I saw Kitchener emptying armfuls of cheap clothing and luggage into the incinerator. I had assume he had relapsed into his serial killing days, but he assured me no, that he was keeping finding what seemed to be tourists’ possessions in the uppermost bedrooms, and was simply cleaning the house out. I did not tell my vile relative to desist, I simply dusted off Young Albert’s “hunting teeth” and we will henceforth make a sport of it every weekend!

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Cape May Stage’s new show!

ape May Stage explores family relationships this spring with their shows “John & Jen” and “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End.” From 1965 to 1996, Erma Bombeck wrote observational humor in her column, “At Wit’s End.” In more than 500 newspapers, she offered a light look at the serious business of living. Bombeck understood the value of laughter in papers full of bad news, and delivered columns that said, “The odds of going to the store for a loaf of bread and coming out with only a loaf of bread are three billion to one.” and “Did you ever notice that the first piece of luggage on the carousel never belongs to anyone?” She advised parents that children don’t want your understanding, they want your “blinding love and your car keys.” She cautioned readers to “Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.” As the mother of three children, she understood that the often terrifying work of raising humans is unbearable without humor. After all, she advised, ”If you can’t make it better, laugh at

it.” Ordinary situations — being embarrassed by your children and being embarrassing to them, lost socks in the dryer — painted a warm, relatable picture. Bombeck died of kidney failure in 1996, shortly after her final column, which affirmed, “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’” In addition to using her talent for her work, Bombeck campaigned for equal rights for women and worked to promote organ donation. Her support for her alma mater, the University of Dayton, led to

the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop. Cape May Stage’s “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End” is a loving tribute to the humorist, written by Allison Engel and Margaret Engel and directed by Marlena Lustik. It runs May 23 through June 22, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8, and Saturdays and Sundays at 3. Visit capemaystage.com for tickets. Focusing on siblings who could be Bombeck’s children, the musical play “John & Jen” looks at family life in twentieth-century America. Written by Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald and directed by Ted Wioncek III, “John & Jen” runs April 27 through 29 and May 4 through 6. In it, Jen and her younger brother demonstrate family divisions that mirror the country’s, including the wish that youngsters striking out into a dangerous world could simply, “Play baseball instead.” Also, in support of Cape May’s theater family, donations to help the East Lynne Theater Company recover from a fire are being accepted at eastlynnetheater.org.) The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

O

ysters. Lke them? Love them? If you’re a local, chances are you can (at the very least) appreciate them. There’s a value to oysters in a seafarin’ town like Cape May. On Saturday, May 5, the Cape May Film Society will “celebrate the oyster” with a Jersey-centric documentary, The Oyster Farmers. The film is receiving high critical acclaim from audiences who both love mother earth (Happy belated Earth Day!) and oysters alike. Forty North Farmers, a group from the Barnegat Bay area where the film was shot, explain the history like this: “Oyster hamlets once littered along the mid-Atlantic coast. Hamlets turned to villages. Villages turned to towns. Towns turned to cities. It was the mighty oyster that built it all. In this case, the botany of desire proved to be lethal. A victim of its own success (and an oyster disease), oyster stocks collapsed and with them, a way of life. We are digging up that legacy and sharing it with a society poised for a bivavale comback. Picking up right where our predecessors reluctantly left

off.”

Matt Gregg holds a Rose Cove Oyster from Barnegat Bay

“When settlers…first sailed into all of our coastal bays, they were crystal clear,” says Matt Gregg of Forty North Oyster Farm. “The reason? Oysters. This part of the world, Barnegat Bay, has a strong heritage and culture that has relied on the bay. Overharvesting and pollution made it impossible to make a living from harvesting oysters.” Gregg says conditions have changed and demand has risen so that oyster farmers can take an eco-friendly and profitable approach to the business now. “In New Jersey, we have

about 12 oyster farms,” he says, pointing out that oysters filter algae from the water and have a positive effect on the waters locally. “What’s going to improve the environment is people’s attitudes, and maybe the oyster will change people’s attitudes.” Forty North Oyster Farm has been featured in or on USA Today, NBC’s Today, Esquire, among many other national, regional, and local news outlets. The film has been screened at several film festivals nationwide. The screening in Cape May will begin at 5pm on May 5 and will include an oyster tasting. Please join us at the West Cape May Borough Hall, 732 Broadway. And a special announcement from the Cape May Film Society. Many PBS stations aired the film Still Dreaming this month and — check local listings — there will be over 400 airings across the country in April alone (so you still may be able to catch it!). The Cape May Film Festival gave it its NJ premiere, and some of our members donated money to help fund this PBS presentation.

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady The prom is not far off and I want to do something dramatic with my hair — like cut if off. Right now it comes down to the middle of my back and I’m tired of taking care of it. Also, I think short hair would make me look more mature. I will be job hunting in June and I look much younger than I am. My boyfriend went nuts when I told him. His opinion does mean something but not everything. But now, I’m debating. Maybe I should just trim it. What would you do? — Time for Change Dear Change Before you do anything, make an appointment with Jeannette Cohen at Accent on Beauty. Take a picture of the hairstyle that you have in mind and ask her opinion. It’s not just a haircut. You are looking for a wee bit of a transformation. That is a decision that you

Wise answers to perplexing questions

and you alone must make — well, you and your hair consultant. Your rationale for the change seems quite sound, the Answer Lady would just caution you to seek advice from someone more objective. That way, you have a second opinion when it comes to dealing with the opposition. And, by the way, hair does grow. This isn’t a point-of-no-return move. Dear Answer Lady My best friend’s husband made a pass at me when I called asking to talk to her. It was a lewd remark about how low-cut my

top was when the four of us (including my husband) met for a round of golf at Cape May National last week. Clearly, my friend was not home when I called, otherwise he wouldn’t dare open that door. I slammed it shut immediately, but I wonder if I should tell my friend. I know that if I do, he’ll just say he was kidding and make me look like a trouble maker, but there’s no doubt in my mind what was going on. What do you think, Answer Lady? — Mum’s the Word Dear Mum Mum is what you should stay. Sharing that information will only jeopardize your friendship. The fact that her husband is not the front end of a horse, will become all too clear eventually, but she may not be ready to hear that now. When that time comes, you will be there to lend an ear. As to Mr. Right, the best way to deal with him is to humiliate him on the golf course... meaning: out drive, out putt, out score him. See the pro there and take some lessons. He’s most likely a hack anyway and it won’t take much to put him in his place.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

T

he bad news is, you missed it. Cape May Bird Observatory’s annual optic’s sale. The good news is, there is still lots of binoculars and spotting scopes in stock, still bearing the sale price. Lots of Zeiss, Swarovski, Steiner, Opticron and Celestrons — priced to fit every budget and excel in any application, from concert going to viewing sporting events to boating and, of course, bird study. Binoculars are your link to the natural world. They confer supernatural intimacy with butterflies, pollinating bees and flowers/ Studying flowers through today’s super close focusing instruments is like stepping into a Georgia O’Keefe painting. You have never seen flowers like this! As for birds. Discover what 70 million American bird watchers have already discovered, a world of color and animation. Cape May is North America’s Number One birding destination, with over two hundred species present at any given time. Spring migration is already upon us. In the next few weeks, millions of northbound warblers, orioles and

tanagers will festoon themselves across the peninsula. Binoculars make them come alive. Spotting scopes, with their higher magnification, confer up close and personal looks at shy birds of prey and distant waterfowl. Yes, you missed the sale. The dealer reps are gone. But CMBO’s knowledgeable staff remain to fit you with just the perfect instrument, whether you are new to bird watching or a globe trotting lister. Beginning birders, in particular, need precision optics designed for bird study. Instruments that offer a wide

field of view, good depth of field, close focus and a bright, sharp image. These qualities can be found in binoculars costing less than $50, but to get one, you’ll need to go to a dealer that specializes in birder-worthy instruments. I recall the last customers of the saleday. They’d been birding more than a decade but were having problems finding birds through their “purchased on-line” instruments. The 12x24 travel binoculars in their hands were simply unsuited for bird study. The 12 power magnification, coupled with small size made them impossible to hold steady. The minuscule field of view would have tried the patience of a saint and the dark image made woodland birding near impossible. Frankly, I felt surprised after 10 years of frustration they were still birding. They went out the door with the instrument they should have had all along and with smiles on their faces. Bird watching can be many things, a sport, a hobby, a passion, a career and a pastime. The one thing it should not be is a frustration. With binoculars that fits your hands, face, interest and budget, it won’t be.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

ROXY is extremely affectionate and playful. She enjoys taking walks and plays ball in the yard like a champion. She is very well mannered and calm when she visits the homes of volunteers. Roxy lived with a foster family after her owner died, but they could not keep her. She had great house manners and loved sleeping in the bed and snuggling with them.

BUDDY is a happy, frisky young dog who craves exercise and affection. He arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer take care of him but she indicated that he lived with cats. He is extremely affectionate and willingly climbs in laps if allowed. Buddy would thrive in an active family that would continue his training. Adopt today!

JAZZY arrived at the shelter as a stray who had experienced neglect. Jazzy’s fur was sparse and her skin was unhealthy. After several weeks of medical attention and top quality nutrition, Jazzy has rebounded. Jazzy is about 10 years old and is a classically sweet chocolate lab. She is very affectionate, loves to play fetch and run in the yard. Adopt!

BUGSY is the king of the cats! Maybe it’s because he is fearless. So if you are looking for the coolest cat around, look no further. Other than being a cool cat, Bugsy is also a super sweetheart. He enjoys curling up on a lap for a nice, long petting session. He’s the perfect, well-rounded gentleman looking for some love in his life. Could this be you?

ELLA is a black and white long hair mix who is looking for an older companion such as herself. Someone who likes long talks, is affectionate and will be able to pet and brush Ella for hours while she sleeps in your lap. If you’re looking for a cuddly friend, then Ella is the perfect match for you. Don’t waste any more time, stop by the shelter and adopt!

FRITZ came in with six other cats. He just loves the company of being with someone and hearing good stories. Fritz is looking to spend his senior years in a loving and warm home where he can curl up on your lap and listen to what you have to say. So if you’re looking for someone to lend an ear, adopt sweet Fritz today!
