Coasting In Cool Cape May Cape May is an Official Coast Guard Community and this past weekend, festival-goers got an inside look of the US Coast Guard base, the only USCG training center in the country, churning out recruits every couple months who go on to serve all over the country, protecting America’s coastline. Families enjoyed tours of Cape May harbor, fun activities, interactive displays, vendors, food, beer, live music and cultural and historical exhibits.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. When is National Bike Month? Right now! The League of American Bicyclists sponsors this May-long celebration of all things cycling. Established in 1956, the campaign encourages more people to trade four wheels for two. Check it out at bikeleague.org.

On The Wild Side
Local Landmark
She’s won a Golden Globe and been nominated for three Emmy awards. Something lesser known about Calista Flockhart (aka Ally McBeal)? She’s been spotted at Cape May’s Dairy Queen. Celebs. They’re just like us.
The 24-hour World Series of Birding — in which teams of birders compete for the most avian sightings — will take place in Cape May this Saturday, May 12! Since the event launched in 1984, it has raised nearly $9 million for bird conservation.
Today, The Star Inn on Perry Street is a Cape Resorts property. But in 1878 this was the location of the Ocean House Hotel, which took up the entire block. It’s also where the Great Fire of 1878 began. Embers from this fire blew onto the roof of Congress Hall, burned it down, then continued burning through 40 acres — 40 acres! — of town. In 2003, when The Star Inn was renovated by Cape Resorts Group, ash from this fire was discovered under the building’s foundation.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — Answer is on page 18. A Lower Cape May Regional boy throws a baseball. It travels 40 feet and then goes right back to the boy. How is that possible?

Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
his Saturday kicks off the 35th annual World Series of Birding, which has raised close to $9 million for bird conservation. Sometimes, you hear that word “world” (“world-famous crab cakes,” “world-famous chicken wings”) and you know there’s some serious hyperbole at play. But in the case of this birding event, the use of “world” is apt. Not only does the 24-hour competition draw competitors from around the world, Cape May is known internationally for its birding — we’re the second-best spot in the world, according to National Geographic (beaten only by South Georgia Island in Chile). But it’s not just birding that brings us global prestige. The wife and I were just discussing all the ways in which Cape May has earned a spot on the world’s radar. Our zoo has been ranked 13th best on the planet and third best in the nation — hat tip to TripAdvisor, which has also named our beaches ninth best in the world, second in the nation. We’ve made Budget Travel’s list of top 10 coolest small towns in America.
And Cape May Brewing Company makes the best beer in the country, according to The Beer Connoisseur magazine (that’s their Topsail brew, for those who just got thirsty). The Albert Stevens Inn on Myrtle Avenue has been named among the top 25 B&Bs in the world, and the Mission Inn on New Jersey Avenue is consistently ranked one of the nation’s 25 best (TripAdvisor again). We’ve got “one of the longest and best growing seasons for European vinifera wine grapes on the Eastern Seaboard” (New York Times)
and The Virginia hotel and Congress Hall have been honored by Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, as fourth and ninth best hotels in New York State and the MidAtlantic Region, respectively. And this isn’t an exhaustive list of accolades. Cape May is like that annoying kid in high school who got all the awards at graduation. Dean’s list! MVP! Honor roll! We have a feeling we’ll only be seeing Cape May’s name in print more often — the town is looking better than ever. The earthy green siding job on Victorian Towers looks great (I’ll soon be old enough to qualify for an apartment there, if I’m not already). And we’re stoked for a new sidewalk on West Cape May Bridge and the new asphalt on Seashore (I’m not just saying that because my wife has a habit of hitting every damn pothole she sees in our poor Subaru). Now if we could only get the same treatment for Sunset Boulevard… In the meantime, good luck to all the birders flocking our way this weekend. We’re excited to have you in our neck of the woods. We hope you find it world-class.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Jourdan Richardson from Secondo is up. How long have you been bartending? Three years. Favorite drink to make? A Secondo Shandy because it tastes delicious. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers snap their fingers to get my attention. Biggest tip you ever received? At a previous place I worked, we were the only place open during a snow storm, a man came in, ordered two shots of tequilla and tipped me $75.
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Lady in Room #10 - ABV: 6.10% A sour brown ale that’s wildly complex with lush and rich berry undertones. With a year-and-a-half in the barrels with a multitude of microbes, three months of conditioning on black currants and plums amplifies the assertive acidity.
Sunset Liquors Floriography - Blooming White The wine is an explosion of aroma and flavor. It has prominent muscat flavors with apricot and floral notes on the nose. Well balanced with a delicate sweetness and crisp acidity. Enjoyed as an aperitif; partner to spicy fusion foods – mild curries and sushi.

Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with Ken Nichols, a local fisherman, we were informed that tilefish is in season. Did you know that tilefish nearly became extinct after a flooding of abnormally cold water along the bottom of the warm zone of the ocean, killing at least a billion and a half fish in the late 1800s?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Secondo - Panico’s. Haven’t heard of it? That’s because it’s brand-spanking new. This classy Mediterranean spot on Ocean Drive — formerly the site of Axelsson’s Blue Claw — is brought to you by the folks behind Panico’s Bistro in West Cape May. The occasion: A soft opening. The view: Just beyond the restaurant’s patio — complete with twinkly lights and a fireplace — is the bay, where deep-sea, commercial fishing ships are docked and where ospreys circle overhead at twilight. The brininess of the fleet is juxtaposed with the sleekness of the restaurant’s interior, which is cool (color-wise and otherwise), sophisticated and modern. The table: The EZ crew sat with Pat and Kaitlin McBride, who have three children (aged two, seven and 11), so they rarely get a night out… though they DID promise to go kayaking with us on the Winding River in the Pine Barrens in June (because there IS, evidently, life over the bridge). Pat said he’d bring a floating cooler. Oh, hi, new BFF! The food: The buffet offerings were plentiful, so we couldn’t possibly eat them all, though we gave it the old college try: Marinated artichoke hearts, tomato and mozzarella salad, Italian sausage, salmon fillet, pesto tortellini, delightfully seasoned chicken, and wood-fired pizza. Diane ate off Jack’s plate because he neglected to get her one of her own. (#GroundsForDivorce. #NeverDenyAWomanTortellini.) The run-in: We chatted briefly with Parker Smith and his lovely wife Stina. We’d tell Parker that retirement looks good on him, but he’s only truly retired from his job as a trial lawyer. He’s still acting/ modeling/taking on slimy politicos one Facebook post at a time. The bar: Which one? At Secondo, there’s an oyster bar AND a bar-bar. We frequented the latter for a few — okay, *quite* a few — vodka and clubs (It was Friday!). Oh, and we had some Manhattans with Fireball-soaked cherries. Apparently, we like our cherries like we like our operation managers: Tipsy!(We kid, Katie, we kid.) The bummer: It may be called Secondo, but this place is NOT secondo-rate. (Sorry.)

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Kevin, Tonya and Bailey Swales from Bellmawr, NJ who are in sales. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Since they left this part blank, we’re going to assume no one! PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Undertow
D
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
id you know that “May the 4th” sounds like “May the Force” from the Star War? There are many days on which it is best to avoid the social medias — Aprils 1 & 20, any day thoughts and prayers are offered and mercilessly mocked, the day after an election when a Republican wins. May 4 might top them all. Unless you’re celebrating quatro de cinco, Gob Bluth’s birthday. This deep Arrested Development reference brought to you by chronic unemployment. Hit the road with mah boi Bob Daddonna, good guy, good friend, and sales rep for Vacation Time magazine (those fold-out maps and dining guides you see everywhere). He needed help distributing them to EVERY STORE BETWEEN HERE AND ATLANTIC CITY. Bob and I did shows together a million years ago at the Grand Hotel for producer Tom Cupp, whom I can still bring to tears by quoting a little Monty Python. Nih! We popped in to Cape May Distillery in Green Creek, where Bob is a distribution guy, and it turns out that 12 sips of various cus-
tom-made rums, bourbons and gins can get you pretty fustigated. (Chill: Bob, was driving.) I introduced myself to owner Jay Sporl, who said, “I know a wonderful kid named O’Brien who’s a great dancer.” DING! Turns out my son Jackson is besties with Jay’s granddaughter, Hannah, whose mother, Heather, Jay’s daughter, runs Seashore Camp Sites in North Cape May, which they used to own… Long story short — Jackson will be an activities leader for them this summer. This, along with his history of dance, should prepare him for his future as cruise ship director.
A highlight of my first Tour de Undertow (2004-2011) was the numerous times I heard, “I feel like I know your whole family from your column.” I’m not sure how happy my family was about that, but I always took enormous pride in it. The boys are all growed up now. Owen is 16, a junior in high school and has emerged as a gifted comedic actor and singer, the poor bastard (his Prince Farquaad in Shrek was a revelation). Jackson is 15, a freshman, and prodigiously talented dancer, the cutesy rump-shaking of youth replaced by the powerful, gazelle-like leaps of a young man. Henry, 12, is in sixth grade, and still unsure what he wants to be when he grows up (it’s okay, buddy, so am I). The smart money is on video games. Anyway, Cape May Distillery. Not only did I tangentially know the owner, my tasting flight was served by Marge Troutman. If a fiesty redhead served you a meal at Pilot House or Harbor View any time between 1995 and last week, it was Marge. She is enjoying her new full-time role at the distillery And mixes one hell of a mojito. So I’ve heard.

Cape May Distillery is easy to miss, nestled in a small office park on Route 47. But I strongly recommend you make the effort. They feature a beautiful brass bar up front and a nifty sitting room in the back with comfy mood lighting. No, this is not a paid advertisement, although they do have live music on the weekends and I just happen to know a pretty okay acoustic duo. (Catch TNT; Terry & Tim, Sunday at Beach Shack, 430-830.) Had lunch with Ed Henry at Avalon Bagel in Rio Grande. (Teresa was getting her hair did or something.) Mr and Mrs Henry were the folks behind Zoe’s (still Zoe’s), Harpoon Henry’s (now Harpoon’s on the Bay) and Henry’s on the Beach (now, uh, not that). They have been our full-time friends and part-time employers for a lot while now. Ed was handing down some financial advice as I am broke for, let’s see, the 48th year in a row. When I asked him how to become a millionaire, he answered, “First, get a million dollars.” Man is a sage. Was happy to see May Parkins and her bionic arm come walking in to Friday night karaoke at Rio Station. She’s like Winter Soldier if Winter Soldier sang Adele songs. Mary’s son John and his lady friend Shannon Spadt accompanied her. Shannon got to Hollywood week on American Idol a few years back, and John once watched American Idol. He asked if he and I and Shannon could do a threesome. I replied, “I think you mean trio.” Before singing “Zoot Zuit Riot,” John asked, “Hey! Are there any swingers in the audience!” I think he meant swing dancers. And I think it was me that said it. Francis “Don’t Call Me Francis” Mikulak and Victoria (insert funny cat noise here) DeFrancisco, true Terry O’ke stalwarts (and former Ghost Ship employees so it’s surprising they still talk to me) were also there to brighten my night. Frank did “War Pigs” for the 74th time (no fooling; my laptop has a counter) and Victoria and I cried over Avengers. Avengers: Infinity War is what
May 10, 2018 happens when Star Wars and The Godfather have a baby and that baby turns out to be Mozart. Had a great time filling in for Ten Eddy Drive at The Deck last Saturday. I normally wouldn’t be caught dead singing Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars or Nick Jonas (because of me, not them) but here we are. Ten Eddy Drive are Mark Selig (bass), Eddie Rodriguez (drums, who I kept calling Joe; thank you for not shanking me with a broken stick) and Dr David Bee (guitar, optometrist). It was messy at times as we were only had one rehearsal, but mostly it was loud and fun. I’ll be doing it again on June 2 if any of you Cape Mayans want to come, but you never do, because Wildwood may as well be Mars. Big props to Steven Church who mowed our lawn and fixed our mower all for only $20. No, this isn’t a sex metaphor. Or is it? By the time you read this I will be putting the finishing touches on an exciting new project that I’ll (hopefully) be able to officially announce next week. For now, I’ll just be a big tease. Because that’s how you like it, isn’t it. Yeah. You’re so dirty… Sorry, I… I’m not sure where that came from. Lastly this week, come out to Cabanas on Saturday around 7pm for Billy Joel Night. My excellent band, The Strangers, will be culturally appropriating the hell out of 42 songs by America’s foremost pop composer. Cultural appropriation is not a thing, by the way. Everything is derived from everything. Literally, everything. I mean, if monkeys could talk, don’t you think they’d be yelling, “Hey! You! With the walking upright! Stop it! That’s our thing!” Those monkeys need to get over themselves. Though, admittedly, this would make zoos more interesting. That’s all for this week. Don’t forget Downton Stabbey on May 31 at Iron Pier Craft House. I mean, you could do other things, but none of them would have me in them, so what’s the point? ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
Y
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ou are not taking care of your skin. Yes, you. I see you, from my not-atall-creepy vantage point behind the high-powered telescope atop The D’Catur Mansion. I see what you have for dinner, your favorite bath salts, your tiger-and-giraffe-patterned jammies, I see what you… well anyway, enough about that! More importantly, though less interesting for my forthcoming Cape May Behind the Curtains coffee table book, I see how poorly you take the power of the sun seriously. I see you, the lady who uses tinfoil to reflect the sun’s rays up under her chin for what she considers her “all-over tan.” I see you, the burly gent who lies out on the beach in those reprehensible board shorts with no sun block on on Day 1, in the sure knowledge that though he may be red as a beet by nightfall, the next day he will be the color of beef jerky. I see you, the muscled young fella who takes way too much pleasure in oiling his torso with factor zero tanning serum, and who will by age 21 resemble the old loafer Young Albert chews before bedtime every evening.
So, I must act. Previously, we put up posters informing visitors and residents of the dangers of too much sun. These had no effect, so we formed the Sunblock Police, who would patrol the beaches with spray guns and tanks full of thick emulsion paint. That just got messy, and the nightly tractor that rakes and cleans the sand was getting clogged with sticky, leftover Shoebies. Now, we have converted crop-spraying airplanes ready to douse the city with chemicals every hour. As well as an organic non-an-
imal-tested sunblock, we added a nourishing aloe vera mist to soothe you afterwards, and a light moisturizer. Then, because we in Cape May are notorious for not leaving well enough alone, we thought we should include a depilatory agent to avoid that unfortunate look when sunblock mixes with body hair, and a rather promising rejuvenating serum my lab came up with. I see you shifting uneasily on your lounger, but worry not: we paid Wildwooders a full dollar to be test subjects. In cash. Each! I think perhaps we rushed things just a little: when I gazed down from the plane as we did a final check over Wildwood’s beach, to witness the effects, I could swear that I was seeing hundreds of newborn babies on the sand! Surely an optical illusion! But just in case I am right, we have taken the liberty of ordering a few thousand bassinets, diapers and binkies, so worry not if you wake from your beach slumber aged 18 months: you will be changed, powdered and swaddled, before being put to work making Persian rugs and iPhones in our new Nimble Fingers manufacturing facility.

The Activity Column
S
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, flower show inspiration
pring is here, and with it comes the hope of a new start. This year, your baseball team may make the playoffs. Your friends may make time to do all the fun outdoor activities you talked of all winter. Your garden may finally impress the neighbors. It only takes a short walk around the streets of Cape May to find inspiration for your own little patch of ground. For the sake of your future self, don’t rush things. Your present self is eager to go home and set to work, happy to see shoots popping up, happy to be outside after a long winter, happy to work hard in the cool air. As you plan your garden, spare a thought for future you. Think of the gardener you will be in July, when the novelty of weeding has worn off, when the mosquitos are awake, when the temperatures soar. There are things you can do now to make life easier in July. Plant in double rows to make less room for weeds, for example, and use newspaper under your mulch. You can try to install a beehive, if you’re very ambitious. Most
efficiently, stuff your garden with native plants — the lazy gardener’s best friend. Native plants offer the biggest reward for the smallest effort. They tolerate our climate without extensive watering. They attract the insects that eat aphids and other flower destroyers. And, they feed the birds and butterflies that add beauty to your yard. Get your native plants at the Nature Center of Cape May on Saturday, May 19, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. They promise just what you need to make your gardens the “buzz, tweet, and talk of the neighborhood.” They offer New Jersey native
plants and some non-invasive foreigners to feed the butterflies. For a list of the plants they expect to have, visit njaudubon.org/ centers/nccm. The sale will be held at the Nature Center, 1600 Delaware Avenue. (This is also the site of their outstanding summer programs for children, so I always get a little nostalgic while I’m buying my plants. My girls left their squeamishness behind and learned to love the all the creatures of the sea — even the squishy, scary ones — with the crafts, stories and projects they did as little kids at the Nature Center. Sign your kids up!) Before you get your hands dirty, see what real plant artists can do. Visit the Garden Club of Cape May Flower Show at Convention Hall this Friday, May 11, from 12:30pm to 6:00pm. Admission is $2. Enjoy a tribute to “Victorian Poetry in Bloom,” speak to local vendors about tools and tips, and meet other Cape May gardeners. Then, go home, pick up your tools, and get to work. Next week: Salute to Soldiers
Celebrate American Artisans

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
S
ome movies are impressive with their elaborate sets or star-studded casts or digital special effects. But while they impressed, sometimes they disappoint in the end. Then there are movies that are the opposite — where you’re not so impressed in the beginning but in the end you’re moved. If you see 1945, you may wonder where exactly the story is going. And by “wonder” I don’t mean in a positive, suspense-building way. I mean in that in a “I nodded off twice” sort of way. But suffice it to say some stories are better told, and some are better when they unfold. The beginning scene of the film is shot beautifully. The locomotive coming into a run down station is a sight to see. You are in a small town in Hungary. The year is… well... the title of the film! A cart and horse is waiting for a delivery from the train. And it comes by way of two Jewish gentlemen, one older and one younger. They bring two trunks with them. And a lot of controversy! You don’t know why they are so con-
1945 is well worth sticking with troversial — but the town is buzzing. Who are they? What do they want? Why are they here? Have they come back to right a wrong? The town seems particularly guilt-ridden. The town clerk knows. The pastor knows. And the town drunk — he knows so much that he keeps himself pick holding a bottle of gin through most of the movie. By the time you get clued in to what is happening, you’re not nodding off any-
more. At least that’s how I was. As the two strangers come to town, and take their long pilgrimage from one side to the other, you feel that the angst of the townspeople is separate. But it’s not. More surprising is one of the last scenes with the two strangers in the cemetery. What they brought in the trunks, what they came to do, was enough to have a small crowd outside the fence with pitchforks. And when the town clerk arrives to confront the two men, you can feel the injustice. Would this film have been better if it was shorter? No, if it were shorter you wouldn’t see the anguish — and in the end you wouldn’t feel it. I say this all the time; some films are not for everyone. Those who have the ability to sit and wait will have a very moving experience at the end of 1945. Next week, I’ll review the new Avengers movie. Seen it? Email me your feedback — tomhsims@aol.com. And remember: I can’t publish any spoilers so be careful how you word it!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’m beginning to sense that my girlfriend is losing interest. She doesn’t return my phone calls right away. She seems to be spending a lot more time with her girlfriends and when we are together, she seems distant. I have to admit that I took a peak at her cell phone and I didn’t see any weird texts that would hint at another guy, but something’s wrong. What to do? — One Foot Out the Door? Dear One Foot The Answer Lady is going out on a limb here, but why not ask her? Being afraid of the answer is always at the heart of such hesitation, but it is better to know than to stay in the dark. Better yet, why not take her out for a romantic dinner at The Ebbitt Room and a walk on the beach afterwards and see how
Wise answers to perplexing questions
that goes. If she is distant after that effort, you need to confront the situation. Don’t sit around waiting to be issued your walking papers. You deserve better than that. Dear Answer Lady Mother’s Day is rolling around and once again my brothers and I have to find a way to please our mother. If we take her to dinner, she complains about the food or the price or the service. If we buy her flowers, she starts sneezing — even if they’re artificial. If we buy her jewelry, we have to return it. If we ignore
the whole day, she complains we don’t love her. Is there any scenario in which everybody is, if not happy, copacetic? I’m always the one in charge of this, being the oldest, and she turns her wrath on me while my brothers snicker in the corner. — Mom Loves Me Least Dear Least First things first. Mom does NOT love you least. Of that fact, The Answer Lady is sure. She is just cantankerous and you are in the front lines. The Answer Lady has the perfect solution to your dilemma. Buy her candy from The Original Fudge Kitchen, preferably candy that you and brothers like. When she poopoos it, you will at least have the satisfaction of knowing it won’t go to waste. Moreover, The Answer Lady suspects the minute she sees none of you are wounded by her rebuff, but in fact are enjoying HER gift yourselves, she may come around. But no matter what she does, you can’t live your lives trying to please someone who refuses to accept your generosity and love. Do your best and try not to internalize her criticism. It seems she is, as we say in literature, an unreliable narrator.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hink of bird watching and stress doesn’t come to mind. But on May 12, you may encounter binocular-toting individuals who are visibly stressed. These are World Series of Birding participants, scouring Cape May in search of feathered treasure. This statewide competition, hosted by New Jersey Audubon, puts the spotlight on New Jersey’s diverse birdlife and raises money for bird conservation. Wining teams will tally over 200 species in a 24-hour romp across northern forests, southern coastal woodlands, marshes and mud flats. Participants have spent a year refining a route, one that connects the greatest diversity of habitats by the shortest route. The absolute shortest route is the Big Stay category, which limits participants to those species they record from a 17-foot diameter circle. The record of 146 species was set in Cape May, near the end of Sunset Boulevard. Most participants compete in the Limited Geographic Area category to cut down on drive time in these carbon-conscious times. In fact there is a category limited to partici-
pants that do not resort to internal combustion means of locomotion. The Cape May Bird Observatory team is competing in this category, vying for the Zero Carbon Cup. Birding by bicycle and on foot, Director David LaPuma and cohorts should tally over 100 species along their mostly Cape May route. So if you see some stressed bikers wearing binoculars, cut them some slack and if you care to spur their efforts with a pledge upon the number of species they tally, visit worldseriesof birding.org, click DONATE.
The World Series has generated millions of dollars for conservation since its inception in 1984 and certified New Jersey’s fame as North America’s premier bird watching destination. I’ll bet you didn’t know that. But location, location, location. New Jersey sits astride one of the planet’s greatest migratory corridors. If you winter in the tropics and breed in eastern Canada, you gotta fly through New Jersey airspace. Combine this with New Jersey’s habitat diversity and you have the ingredients for a bird-rich destination. The trick is pinpointing the date when the greatest volume of migrants will be passing. There is about a three-week window in May, though weather is unpredictable. What World Series participants dream of is strong southerly winds with winds going northwest by dawn. A wall of rain doesn’t hurt. It knocks migrants out of the sky. But all-day rain makes for miserable birding, not that any team will quit because of it. Unlike baseball, the World Series of Birding is never called on account of rain. Let’s play bird!

SHADY is a three year old mastiff mix who lived with his litter mate and family until they surrendered both dogs to the shelter due to apartment regulations. Shady lived in the same household for his entire life and is house trained, well mannered in the home, enjoys car rides and is friendly towards people. Adopt this sweet boy today!
BOOMER is a one year old pup who was very stressed when he arrived at the shelter, but has become increasing friendly as he gets to know the volunteers and shelter staff. Boomer needs the full attention of someone who will be devoted to helping him relax and learn basic behavioral skills. Take a chance on this loving boy and adopt today!
SATIVA is 11 yrs old and found her way to the shelter because her owner is not well. She is healthy and would love nothing more than a companion to spend her days with. Sativa would be a perfect pet for a senior citizen looking for a buddy in retirement to share a lap. She is a good walker and enjoys getting out into the fresh air. Adopt today!
