Harry’s Opening Weekend Yet another Cape May hot spot opened its doors for the summer season this past weekend. This will mark the third summer since the Hirsch family renovated Harry’s at the Montreal Beach Resort. The bar was full of eager patrons on Friday, ready to take their first sip of the season off the famous crushed menu, which features five delicious cocktails including their best-selling orange crush. Live music will begin in two weeks. Summer’s coming, Cape May!

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. How did spring cleaning become a tradition? In the 1800s, homes were coated with soot by the end of winter, since lamps were lit with oil. It made sense to wait until warmer weather to open windows and doors through which rugs were beat and furniture was dusted — hence spring cleaning.

Robert Mitchum, one of the greatest stars of classic American cinema and an Academy Award nominee, played the lead — an ex con who murdered his wife — in the 1971 film Going Home, parts of which were filmed in Cape May.
It’s been announced that nonprofit Revive and Restore may have a safe, synthetic alternative to horseshoe crab blood for biomedical testing. This is excellent news for this ancient species, which frequents our shores this time every year.
The Chalfonte Hotel was built in 1876 by Colonel Henry Sawyer, who was shot through the neck and captured by Confederates during the Civil War. Just when he was about to be executed, Abraham Lincoln stepped in and coordinated a harrowing prisoner exchange — Sawyer for the son of General E Lee. Sawyer was saved, and returned to Cape May to build the Chalfonte. Today, Cape May Brewing Company makes a 9% barleywine called Sawyer’s Swap to commemorate the event.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — Answer is on page 18. A man stands on one side of a river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog, who immediately crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or boat. How did the dog do it?

Ramblings From The Editor
H
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
orseshoe crabs are never far from my mind this time of year. This is when, during dog walks, we start finding hundreds of them struggling to get back on their claws at Higbee Beach, having been flipped over during the great sex-and-gluttony show on the Delaware Bay (hey, that’s what the nature experts actually call it!) So I was glad to get an email telling me that Revive and Restore, a California-based nonprofit, has announced there is a safe, synthetic alternative to horseshoe crab blood for biomedical testing. Remember, the blue blood of these creatures is used to test intravenous drugs for bacterial contamination. Translation: They’ve saved countless human lives. Unfortunately, this bloodletting results in fatalities for 30 percent of crabs. And the gentle horseshoes — which predate the dinosaur — are already endangered thanks to overharvesting. So an alternative solution that saves humans AND crabs? Great news. The more sustainable testing method — rFC — was developed by global pharma-
³
ceutical brand Eli Lilly and Company. Their product — which is cost-effective — should allow us to cut down on the need for horseshoe crabs by 90 percent. This will allow the crabs to get back to their giant orgies on the beach, which produce the eggs on which our shorebirds depend. Ah, the circle of life. While rFC has been commercially available since 2003, patent protections have only recently expired, so we should be seeing the new test increasingly adopted in the near future. Hang tight, horseshoes.
Cape May lost a local legend with the recent passing of Bud Swain at the age of 87. Bud was the third-generation owner of Swain’s Hardware, founded in 1896 by his grandfather Charles and now run by Bud’s daughter Terri along with her brother Rick. Even if you didn’t know Bud, you might have felt as if you did. Advancing years didn’t seem to impinge on his energy — the pages of this magazine through the years showed him continuing to support a number of community organizations, as well as just enjoying a good night out. Rest in peace, Bud. Good luck to cultural guru Bill Sterritt, whose Cape May Fringe Festival makes its debut this weekend at the airport with theatre and music offerings. You can get a weekend pass for $20. Plus, there is a beer garden and that never hurts! You can get more information at 323-793- 2153 or email aerodromenj@aol.com. And see the half-page ad on page 64. Bill already operates the theatre company Aerodrome at the airport and is working his butt off to bring more culture to this area. More power to him!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Pat Ewing from Nauti Spirits is up. How long have you been bartending? Eight years. Favorite drink to make? A mojito. I love the process. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When people wear animal prints to the bar. Well that’s a first! Biggest tip you ever received? Don’t take any wooden nickels and don’t play in the street. Those are two huge life tips. At least you still have your sense of humor!
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Follow the Gull - ABV: 5.50% Originally brewed to celebrate Cape May County’s 325th anniversary, we brew with a ridiculous amount of Citra, El Dorado, Azacca, and Amarillo hops, yielding a juicy and ultra-drinkable hop-bomb bursting with tropical and citrus aromas.
Collier’s Liquor Store Haraszthy Bearitage Calif Red Blend - $13.99 A blend of Zinfandel, syrah, and Petite Syrah. Bright, fruity aromas of berry scone, dried cherries, and nut brittle with a silky, crisp, fruity medium body. An easy drinking everyday red. Enjoy with red meats or all by itself.
Produce Report Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that rhubarb is in season. Did you know that the leaves attached to the rhubarb stalk are poisonous! So no matter how enticing, green and crisp those leaves look, you should always discard that part of the plant.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The ranking: The surf-inspired Rusty Nail is one of the best beach bars in America, according to Travel and Leisure. If you’ve ever been to a happy hour at this sand-bottomed, outdoor bar — complete with live music, fire pits, a ping pong table and leaping dolphins just across the street — it’s easy to see why. The server: Nicole. She is “one of the nicest employees at the Nail,” according to Katie. (She would know… she tended bar here for seven years). The confession: Mike had to leave lunch early because he’d consumed 24 Hell or High Watermelon beers in the previous 48 hours. (In his defense, this wheat brew is made with real watermelon.) While soaking up the sun at the Nail is pretty great, it’s not easy when one is experiencing katzenjammer. (That’s 19th-century American slang for “hangover” from the German word for “wailing cats.” We may be a bit, ahem, lushy at our Friday lunches from time to time, but dammit our vocabulary is on point.) The drinks: A mojito for Diane. Kona Longboard Lager for Katie (who hasn’t been able to ride an actual surfboard in a year due to all her work at Exit Zero). Allagash White for Jack and Mike (hair of the dog, amiright?). And a chardonnay for our newest employee. Welcome to the column, Colleen! The app: Strawberry wings. We love when things that shouldn’t work together, do. The food: Many fish tacos servings (because, summer) and a pulled pork sandwich. The crime: We spotted a little boy happily removing sand from the fire pit area and depositing it into his mother’s purse while she chatted away at one of the picnic tables. Four-year-olds, man. The dogs: We didn’t bring any EZ puppies this day, although dogs are welcome at the Nail. The last time we brought one of our mutts — the late, great, 15-year-old Rudy — he experienced a little tummy upset and had to leave early. Though even he lasted longer than Mike. Bazinga!

I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
’ve played a lot of gigs at a lot of venues with a lot of bands over the years, but I can’t remember ever having as much fun as I did Saturday night. My band, The Strangers, completed our second annual Billy Joel Night at Cabanas. I was a little under the weather (as I always seem to be at these things; I think it’s 73% psychosomatic by now) but once we got rolling things opened up and I was able to sing free and easy. I took a lot of crap for a lot of years for being a Billy Joel fan (and for wearing a fanny pack until about five years ago, but that’s a whole other story), so it’s always nice to see a couple hundred people in a packed club singing along with you. Thanks to Dave Landis, Al Olivero, Walt Sapsai, Sue Polcer and Steve Kyle for making my job easy. Next up? An REM tribute. Then Squeeze. Then Prince. Then I’ll probably be dead. (The ultimate Prince tribute. Too soon?) Compliment of the Week: A Billy Joel fan who shall remain nameless (I forget his name) said, “I’ve heard a lot of good bands down here but you’re the best singer I’ve heard.” Incredibly humbling. Amazingly accurate.
Musician Gregg Carpenter was in the crowd so I sang extra-hard. You know us musical types only really perform when other musicians are in the room. Sunday was a sore-throated acoustic gig with Tim Joyce at the Rusty Nail. Tim is the honey badger of side men; he don’t care. Sore throat? Sing. Sinus infection? Sing. Arm fell off? Sing. Also, Tim never makes mistakes. Every missed lyric, botched arrangement and wonky chord is my fault. Just ask him. Over the last two gigs at the Nail, we’ve met employee Mervin, an absolute gem, sum-
mering here from the US Virgin Islands, and bar patron Jewel, visiting from the Bahamas. I think they’re doing it wrong. Jim and Laura Zeitler were there to make it feel warmer than it was but you gotta watch out for their daughter and my former co-worker, Olivia. She’ll cut you. With words. This week I was propped up by the presence of good friends Randy and Wendy Redelico (DING!), Sue Polcer (on weekend Billy Joel leave), Mary Beth Joyce (Tim’s sister from New Hampshire) plus Lindsey, Laurie and other assorted Axelsson cousins and hangers-on. All knew I was struggling, all offered words of encouragement, and a few offered whiskey. Of encouragement. Tim and I play Beach Shack Monday the 21st and alternating Sundays/ Mondays through October. If you’ve been to the Nail you’ve probably been served by Bill Scott. Bill is a fine bartender, a solid young dude and son of Bill, who is brother to Frank, which makes Bill (Jr) his nephew. Following? Frank (an excellent photographer and average karaoke singer) is

married to the lovely Regina, who has been in the fight of her life for the last year or so. So if you can spare a good thought, send one up. Vocal Lifesaver of the Week: ’Twas a pretty slow Terry O’ke night on Friday at Rio Station (the bar was busy, the karaoke was not), which usually means I end up singing 20-25 songs. Not ideal when you have to sing 40+ Billy Joel songs the next night. But bandmate Dave Landis bailed me out by singing about 13 songs, for which I am eternally grateful. I still felt horrible on Saturday. But, like, 3% less horrible. Also in attendance was Joseph Oswald! On his birthday! Joe just turned 43 or something and got to sing one song for every year he’s been alive! He always closes with Prince (a song whose title I cannot print here) and always slays it. Joe also hosts on 2NDPG (Second Page), a Facebook livestream talk show for hippie liberals, which I completely derailed recently with my crazily conservative assertion that Justice League is a pretty good movie. Rachel McGettigan sang some Journey, after which we tried to recall what made her literally fall down laughing during The Pink Panther Rides Again at my former place of employment. Oh, and it’s Rachel Scott now! I almost forgot. Happy Being Married! Rachel is a hostess at Harry’s Oyster Bar in AC. If you go, tell her I sent you. She doesn’t like me and I want to picture the look on her face. Blanket Statement of the Week: No, I do not know who you should talk to about getting a gig at Elaine’s. I don’t work there anymore. Stop asking. If you got fired from your job I wouldn’t call you to ask who’s doing the hiring at the place you just got fired from. That would be a dick move. Correction of the Week: Mary Perkins was recently at Terry O’ke with her Terminator arm. Not May Parkins. Apparently Google Drive has ducking autocorrect. Local blues band Bluebone
May 17, 2018 was formed by my friend Jay Bethel 20 years ago this summer. Can you believe it? They’ve been tapped to play the grand reopening of the newly-refurbished Mayer’s Tavern on Friday the 25th. Mayer’s was Bluebone Central for the better part of a decade. Thank you to Van Burriss, Bluebone bassist, for shamelessly dropping this plug into my Facebook Messenger. (Seriously, I always need material.) Major Announcement of the Week: Talking Arts with Cape May Stage, a brand new podcast, recorded its first episode last week in the spacious (cough) Cape May Stage offices at 31 Perry. Your hosts, Roy Steinberg, artistic director of CMS, and Terry O’Brien, artistic director of shower puppet shows which isn’t sad at all, talked all things theater and other stuff. We think it went pretty well but will leave it for you to judge. We (Undertow Productions) hope to have it “on air” by Memorial Day. I’ve got a couple of other projects I’m working on in this vein, but I can’t say anything just yet; waiting on a few more “official” approval (ahem, Jack Wright, ahem). But once that happens thing should come together quickly (name of my sex tape, beat you to it). Until then I’m forced to tease you for one more week. If you missed the April performance of Downton Stabbey at Iron Pier Craft House, we’re mounting it again (why so sexual this week?) on the 31st. Make your reservations online. Please. That’s all for this week. Thanks again to all who supported my various gigs; you are all appreciated. If you’d like to offer more tangible support (read; cash) you can back my Patreon (patreon.com/terryoke1) and/ or subscribe to my YouTube channel (youtube.com/terrynobrien, we’re at 43 subscribers and 73 hours of the 1000 and 4000 required to monetize) or just, you know, hand me 20 bucks. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
want your sweat. No, this is not the lyrics to a popular music sensation or the start of a steamy letter. What I mean is very literal: I am very keen to purchase your sweat, for scientific purposes. And for the purpose of making money. A chance scientific discovery that took place in the secret laboratory in the Mansion (which has, I realize, just become a whole lot less secret. Damn. Well, never mind: we are close to cracking the secret of cold fusion anyway, and already have the perpetual motion machine working. In fact the damn thing won’t turn off, which and the task I set it, of polishing the floor, looks set to tunnel successfully to China in a month at present rate of buffing) led me to realize that Cape May sweat is a potent substance indeed. I think it is the combination of rare and exotic things that residents and long-term visitors absorb into their systems: a mix of fine single malts, saltwater taffy, Uncle Bill’s secret pancake ingredient and the background radiation from the alien flying saucer that crashed back in 1956 and that we buried
under the lawn at Congress Hall. Whatever, when you gather Cape May sweat in quantities greater than the magical 10cc, it not only glows in the dark, but when distilled and made into tincture, lends the user all kinds of special abilities that verge on what one might call superpowers. We tested it on some Wildwooders, who are not unlike chimpanzees in their suitability to such tasks. Sure enough, within a day, the subjects were walking upright, wearing clothes and only infrequently hurling hand-
fuls of poop at one another. Oh, wait, I may have my notes mixed up. It is possible that we indeed used chimps as test subjects after all. Certainly the notes suggest it was the less hairy test group we picked, so that makes sense. So yes, not only was brainpower increased, but also the boosted monkeys/ Wildwooders/whatever developed what we in Cape May call “an eye for a main chance”. Put simply, this is the skill to part Shoebies from their money in all kinds of inventive and pleasurable ways, so that they leave financially poorer but in possession of all manner of items and gifts that may have seemed indispensable at the beach, but when taken back to a suburban home, are somehow rendered useless and in fact baffling. We managed to offload — I mean, er, sell — 300 XXXXl white tees with “Frankie Says…” on them, 130 season passes for the crazy golf, and 196 engagement rings set with Cape May Diamonds, which as you all know, are invaluable. Or totally without value.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, “A Year in the Trenches” at East Lynne Theater
perk of parenthood is the chance to connect with your kids’ classmates. Volunteering at the school’s field day or book fair, I saw the same kids over the years. I met them as wide-eyed kindergarteners; was ignored by them in middle school; clapped for them at the high school play. I know who’ll cry when Bambi’s mother dies, who won’t stop to get a bandage on a skinned knee, and who will make the class — and the parents — laugh. Now, it seems every store in town is staffed by nearadults who greet me with, “Hi, Allison’s mom.” As they bag my groceries, I learn their plans. Many of them will join the military. I blink back tears — I’m grateful for their service, proud though I can’t take any credit, and a little sad that their service is needed. I don’t want these terrific young men and women to suffer sand fleas, much less bullets. I’d rather they sit with me on a bench at the elementary school and read a story, and I can only imagine what their parents are feeling.
May is a good time to remember that old people have always sent young people off to fight. The East Lynne Theater Company offers A Year in the Trenches, a detailed look at people who serve. Written by James Rana and directed by Gayle Stahlhuth, A Year in the Trenches provides insight into the daily life on the front lines of World War One. Like today’s soldiers, they had to contend with rapidly changing technology as they fought faraway battles. In 1918, it was the telephone that brought war close to the home front, as young women translated dispatches and passed messages along.
Engineers worked to direct explosions and avoid casualties. Disease and vermin had to be kept at bay. For the creators of A Year in the Trenches, attention to detail so important that they include a thank-you to Major Rory McGovern at West Point Military Academy for his fact-checking on the website. The show runs from May 15 through May 26, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm. Tickets are $35, $30 for seniors, $20 for full-time students, active military and veterans. As always at East Lynne, children 12 and under are free. There is a 2:00 matinee on Wednesday, May 23 and no evening show that night. For Memorial Day, the City of Cape May and the American Legion Harry Snyder Post 193 and VFW Post 386 will conduct a ceremony on Monday, May 28, 2018 beginning at 11am in Convention Hall. At approximately 11:45, the US Coast Guard will present a rifle salute and launch a flower boat from Gurney Street beach. The public is encouraged to attend. Next week: Yard Sales

O
ne hundred. A milestone to celebrate... an anniversary to remember. It’s been one hundred years since the US entered World War One. And last year, when East Lynne Theater Company staged the James Rana play A Year In The Trenches, it was artistic director Gayle Stahlhuth’s 100th show with the company. The play is back by popular demand and now playing only through Saturday, May 26. The work, commissioned by NJ Historical Commission and NJ State Council on the Arts, was written by Rana and developed with Stahlhuth, based on the book Remembering World War I: An Engineer’s Diary of the War by Charles Edward Dilkes and other sources. During the evening, you meet young Dilkes, so proud to do his part, and a cast of other characters — all of whom have New Jersey ties. The cast includes Osborn Focht, Ryan Genauldi, Matt Baxter Luceno, Mike Newman, Tara Reuter and Hillary Wilson. Newman plays a variety of characters and
A Year in the Trenches at East Lynne Theater never breaks from any. Focht is one minute Father Duffy and the next General Pershing. Luceno goes from a gung-ho pilot to the sensitive Joyce Kilmer. As Kilmer, his scene with Father Duffy will make you cry. Reuter and Wilson give us the female perspective — like the Hello Girls, telephone operators who left home to run communications in France. Reuter convincingly plays one such young woman, Grace Banker. All the pride she feels is evident as well as the
hurt of being thought of as less than a soldier. Wilson (new to the cast this year) plays Nurse Amabel Scharff Roberts, another young woman willing to give up all comforts for the unknown of an experience that was far more than anyone bargained for. These two show the many ways in which women contributed to the war effort. In both English and French, they will treat you to songs of the era — you’ll be delighted to sing along. I am often amazed at Gayle’s ability to put on shows that both maintain the mission of ELTC and resonate strongly with today’s audiences. In this case a message I took from the show is that 100 years later we may not have learned that much from our mistakes. Since its world premiere in Cape May, readings of the play were performed around the state and the creative team was featured on a segment of State of the Arts on NJTV. If you missed this wonderful production last year, you don’t want to miss it in this limited engagement. And if you saw it last year, you will want to see you again. Visit eastlynntheater.org for details.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My friend asked me to the prom with a super proposal. He pulled up to my house in a pickup truck full of roses and when I let the tailgate down, he had spray painted “Prom?” on it. I said, “Yes” immediately and thought it was such a nice thing to do. We have been friends since kindergarten and I like him very much, but I don’t think we will ever be a couple. I just don’t feel that way about him. The problem is, a promosal like this — to me — says, “I want us to be serious.” I have college to look forward to and I just don’t want to get tied down. Is this something I should be worried about? — Prom Jitters Dear Jitters Sometimes it’s best not to think too much about, “What if?” and just enjoy the moment. If the evening does take a more
Wise answers to perplexing questions
serious turn, don’t overreact. Simply tell him you want the evening to be fun and friendly, not romantic. Clearly a truckload of roses is a serious gesture, so a talk will be necessary. Invite him to breakfast at Uncle Bill’s the next morning and bring up the subject then. Dear Answer Lady I have a large house near the beach and I know that the minute school is out my children will be coming down on weekends with their children, my grandchildren, and will leave said children for me to watch
while they go home — alone. First, I’m getting too old for this. Secondly, I resent the fact that because I no longer work, I am joyful at the idea of being saddled with rearing their children. I did my job of parenting and did it well. Now I want to do what I want to do, not what others want me to do. Is there any diplomatic way of addressing this without turning it into a kerfuffle? — Stressed Nana Dear Nana You must be perfectly frank and spell it out. To emphasize your point, on Sundays around 2-3pm, The Answer Lady suggests you reach out to your girlfriends; grab your golf clubs, tennis racket or walking shoes and walk out of the house. If you don’t feel like playing a sport, go to Cape May Winery for a nice tasting or Hawk Haven, which has entertainment every Sunday. You are way too available and obviously too hospitable, This requires retraining and reeducating your children to the fact that your time is not to be something to be taken for granted.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ast Saturday, Don Freiday and I went birding in Belleplain State Forest, the region’s hot spring birding destination. The first person we ran into was a British expatriate, living in Connecticut, who asked us for directions to summer tanager, one of our southern breeders. Later at the bridge, I turned to find myself face to face with Becky Marvil, down from Maine. She and a bunch of friends from Maine and Maryland were also on the hunt for some of our southern specialties, most notably Kentucky and yellow-throated warbler. We were soon joined by two vans of birders from the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Since the Mass group was interested in eastern meadowlark, we directed them to the Pee Fields, the grassy wastewater treatment center for the state hospital and one of the few places in the county where meadowlark can be relied upon. This reminded me of the Scottish birders I’d taken here last year. They, too, were searching for this grassland specialist. So, lets do a summary... Connecticut,
Maryland, Maine, Scotland. All of these visitors were here to see birds. So now the big question. When are the folks who promote tourism in New Jersey going to wake up to the fact that the state is one of the greatest ecotourism destinations on earth? The Costa Rica of the north. I know Cape May businesses are savvy to the birding trade, it’s the rest of the state that lags in terms of awareness. Birds. You don’t have to rake them, prune them, feed and water them or promote them.
All you need to do is maintain the habitat that sustains them. The ranks of birders are huge and growing annually. There are approximately 70 million in North America and birding is even more popular in the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden and Norway. New Jersey is served by four international airports. Millions of European birders are two strolls along a jetway from New Jersey, and I’ll wager that 40-50 million birders live within a tank of gas of Cape May. It’s a big, bird-rich planet but few bird species are found on every continent. One is osprey, but few places on the planet offer the volume of osprey found along the Delaware Bayshore. In the next few weeks, Cape May’s population is going to swell with the ranks of people drawn to see the spectacle of horseshoe crabs and shorebirds on the bay. Many, I expect, will be from the Washington DC area, directed here by a recent article in the Washington Post. Birding in Cape May — it’s big news.

ORCHID is a lovable girl who likes being held and pet. Although she loves flowers, hence her name, Orchid has a wicked case of allergies, just like a lot of her human friends. Sometimes she gets a case of the sneezes. But aren’t kitty sneezes adorable? So If you’re looking for a lovable companion kitty, Orchid is your girl. Adopt today!
TIGER LILLY is the name her family gave her before they walked out one day. Because she was abandoned, Tiger Lilly has some issues with trusting people. She needs a patient companion who will comfort her with petting and shower her with love. She prefers to be the only pet and likes a quiet household. Could you be the one to save her soul?
GOLIATH is a distinguished older gent who is looking forward to his golden years in a warm home with a kind family. Maybe one with a fluffy bed and some food would do for this big guy.
