“At Wit’s End” Hits The Stage Playwrights Allison and Margaret Engel bring us a loving tribute and a lampoon of life in the suburbs filled with light-hearted humor and nuggets of wisdom that give insight into the life and family of the beloved 1960s columnist, Erma Bombeck, played by Kate McCauley Hathaway. Kate returns to Cape May Stage having previously been seen in I Hate Hamlet, Steel Magnolias and Other Desert Cities. The show runs Wednesday-Sunday until June 22 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What’s the scariest-looking shark? A goblin shark. This is a matter of opinion, of course, but Google the goblin and tell us you don’t agree! The animal has fanglike teeth that extend out of its mouth on elastic tissue to catch just-out-of-reach prey. Don’t worry — they’re located mostly off the coast of Japan.

Local Landmark
In 2010, Lynn Cohen, aka Magda on Sex and the City and Mags in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, dined at The Ebbitt Room. She was in town portraying Winnie in a Cape May Stage production of the play Happy Days.
The endangered horseshoe crabs are back (the EZ crew flipped hundreds of them right-side-up this morning). Just a reminder: It’s great to right them when they’re upside down at the tideline, but please don’t lift by the tail!
In March of 1962, a great nor’easter battered Cape May for three days with 63mph winds and 35-foot waves. No one was prepared — meteorologists had predicted only a slight drizzle. The storm ripped apart many structures, including our famed boardwalk, and did $3 million in damages to the city (or about $26 million in today’s money). The city replaced this boardwalk with a 1.4-mile promenade. Today’s, it’s a favorite amongst bikers, joggers and roller bladers.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 18. A rooster laid an egg on top of the barn roof at Beach Plum Farm. Which way did it roll?

Ramblings From The Editor
P
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
lastic drinking straws are evil. In the US alone, 500 million plastic straws are used daily — for about 20 minutes each — and none of them will biodegrade. That means they’re clogging our oceans at a frightening rate. In the water, straws are frequently ingested by marine life, often with fatal consequences. Seventy-one percent of seabirds and 30 percent of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs, according to StrawlessOcean.org. They’re being ingested by us, too. Research has shown seafood eaters could be consuming 11,000 bits of plastic per year. While the impact of this is still being studied, I think it’s fair to assume we’d all prefer our scallops sans pollution. You may be thinking, “But I don’t litter my straws — I dispose of them properly!” But because straws are so small and lightweight, they are difficult to recycle and often end up falling out of sorting machines. And, in landfills, little straws are part of a big problem — toxins from our plastic waste are seeping into
our groundwater. On the bright side, we’re wising up and taking action. We’ve seen a number of campaigns encouraging people to go strawless. In February, there’s now a designated National Skip the Straw Day which, if everyone in the country abided, could save the planet enough straws in one 24-hour period to circle Earth’s circumference two-and-a-half times. And we’re seeing an increasing number of restaurants offering paper or stainless steel versions. At one restaurant in Maui, Twizzlers
have replaced straws completely. I’m proud to say Exit Zero Cookhouse decided two years ago that we would be a plastic straw-free restaurant (unless people, you know, demanded them). When we finally open, Exit Zero Filling Station will be, too — we’ll be going with paper straws. I would love to hear of other eateries who are following this course. I know that Magic Brain Café are on the same crusade. I know there are grumblings. Recently, when Monmouth Beach officials followed the lead of many European nations and banned single-use plastic products in their municipality, some members of the Cool Cape May Facebook page commented this was government meddling. I’d rather lose the freedom to buy every kind of plastic than lose the freedom to swim in a clean ocean. Full of turtles. A word of introduction… we recently hired a new Business Manager, Colleen Joyce. Colleen is a Media, PA transplant who now lives on the island. I’m excited to have this energizer bunny on our team. You’ll be seeing a lot more of her this summer!

Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Leo Moryakov from The Ebbitt Room is up. How long have you been bartending? 10 years. Favorite drink to make? An old fashioned because it’s one of those cool, classic cocktails that you want to make right. What’s your bartending pet peeve? Nothing. But we weren’t willing to accept that answer. Impatient people who order food before their drinks. Biggest tip you ever received? $1000 on two different occasions.

Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that strawberries are in season. Did you know that strawberries aren’t true berries. Technically, a berry has its seeds on the inside. Meaning each seed on a strawberry is considered by botanists to be its own separate fruit.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille at the Montreal Beach Resort. Nary an empty table. Even on a(nother) crummy day. The server: Devin. Her name is of Celtic origin and means “poet.” She delivered us our Harry’s signature orange crushes — served icecold in mason jars — which we’d call poetry in motion. The awkward moment: Mike and Colleen showed up in the same Exit Zero T-shirt. If this were a tabloid, we’d tell you who wore it best. But this is Exit Zero, so we’ll just tell you who wore it without spilling on it (Colleen). The food: Smoked trout dip and Thai chili wings to start, followed by Asian chicken salad, ahi tuna sliders, lobster BLT and a crab macand-cheese dish that was meant for Mike but got pilfered by everyone at the table, especially Jack. We requested a takeout container of every size, but ended up eating, well, pretty much everything. The conversation: Jack’s passion for food is second only to his passion for his wife (according to, ahem, his wife), so he would like the menu at the new Exit Zero Filling Station to be — from what we can surmise from his near-constant stream of food-related emails — the same length as oh, say, Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (less existentialism, more hot dogs). Others in the EZ crew (mainly Colleen) argued for something more Goodnight Moon in length. (Fewer bowls of mush, more hot dogs). We’ll be whittling still-in-the-running items this week because, as they say in the writing world, kill your darlings. The run-ins: At the bar, we spotted Kate Robbins, owner of the Muddy Paws self-service dog-grooming salon in North Cape May. (Their anti-shedding shampoo did the impossible and actually slowed the shedding of Exit Zero mutt/lovable basketcase Rudytoo). She was dining with the equally lovely Corinne Rietheimer, owner of the gourmet soapery Shore Soaps on Washington Street. Harry’s affable food-andbeverage director and third-generation hotel operator, Jonathan Hirsch (also lovely — those dreamy eyes), manned the liquor store. The consensus: A visit to Harry’s is tonic for whenever you’re feeling, erm, harried. Badum-ching!

Undertow
I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
cordially invite you to join The Undertow Players tonight (Thursday) at Iron Pier Craft House for Downton Stabbey, a murder-mystery-musical-comedy. The show is a trifle; a murder, the reading of a will, zany shenanigans. The real magic is in the chemistry of my excellent cast. Amy Plantarich, Rebecca Sundstrom, Kevin Ebner and Chris Nagle bring a warmth and camaraderie that can’t be faked. Unless they’re really good actors, which is possible... I wrote the show in 2015 the same way I write all my plays and short stories; title first. And, no, you don’t need to know anything about the TV show to enjoy the play. Our April show went over like gangbusters and we can’t wait to do it again and see if we remember our lines. Make your reservations on the Iron Pier Craft House website. It’s only 40 seats, so get in early or you’ll have to wait until June 28. Speaking of Rebecca Sundstrom, I think she may be stalking me. First she comes to my gig at Secondo (more on that later) on Saturday THEN shows up at my Rusty Nail gig (more on that later) on Sunday. She likes
young, tall, fit, handsome men with wavy hair. And I clearly check all those boxes. Correction of the Week: It was Clary’s Country CORNER, not Clary’s Country Kitchen, where Bob Daddona fell hopelessly in love with our waitress, Kim. My apologies. Bob and I made another stop at the Cape May Distillery in Green Creek, where Bob is a distributor, and the second time was just as charming as the first. Marge Troutman mixed me a fine mojito, salesman Colin O’Brien (no relation) created a new drink of strawberry-banana rum and ginger ale (quite
yummy) and marketing and music director Colleen Barry booked TNT Acoustic for Saturday, June 9, 2pm-5pm. I should really stop by there more often. Every time I do, good things happen! Or maybe it’s the mojitos... It was a biblical Sunday at the Rusty Nail. At precisely 4:25pm Tim Joyce and I (TNT Acoustic) finished setting up on the outside stage, at precisely 4:27pm it started pouring and did not stop for six hours. “Like a cow peeing on a flat rock,” as my dad used to say. Tim and I and roughly 200 diners moved into the bar, where the humidity spiked to approximately 300%, but the Beach Shack staff was on top of it, cranked the AC and things chilled pretty quickly. What followed was a fun, if damp, gig. My third of the weekend. Met Jim and Linda Ankrom from Stillwater, NJ. Not only did they buy and read my book (Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales), they actually enjoyed it! You can get your copy today from Amazon today for literally $.01. Plus shipping. I enjoyed a post-show cocktail with “Cousin” Ray Heslip. Trust me, you know

him. Even if you don’t know, him, you know him. And he has seen every band you want to see but never have, three or four times. From backstage. And has the autographed album to prove it. Also ran into some fellow theater-folk. Monique Cuyler (master electrician) and Meg Dowling (assistant stage manager) from Cape May Stage, where they opened Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End, a one-woman show starring Kate McCauley-Hathaway. (You can hear about this and other upcoming CMS shows on my new podcast, Talking Arts with Cape May Stage, co-hosted by Artistic Director Roy Steinberg which should be on CapeMayStage.org very, very soon. Tara Reuter, Osborn Focht and Matt Lucerno from East Lynne Theater Company’s production of A Year in the Trenches were also there. Matt is from Missoula, Montana, which he says is like the Austin of Montana, which explains the hat. A Year in the Trenches plays Wednesday through Saturday after an acclaimed 2017 run. Michael Carney and lady friend Thai Nicholas were there, as well. Michael is heir to the Carney’s Empire (along with Sean), Thai is the daughter of Jen Dowe and, thankfully, does not carry her mother’s karaoke gene. (Carney’s Karaoke starts Tuesday June 26 with yours truly as host. I hate that term, yours truly. But… here we are.) Compliment of the Week: while on break at Rusty Nail, my friend Kelly Batz said, “Terry O’Brien! I just emailed Myra (Vassian, Congress Hall Entertainment Director) to find out who this amazing acoustic duo is and she told me it’s you! You guys are awesome!” I swear, I’m not making these things up. There were no Bill Scott shenanigans of note this week, but I’m keeping an eye on him. (Bill is a fantastic bartender at the Rusty Nail, despite his inferior martini-shaking skills. Keep practicing, buddy! You’ll get it!) NARRATOR: He didn’t get it. Played a (hopefully recur-
May 31, 2018 ring) gig at Secondo on Saturday. Secondo is the second (hence the name) restaurant from the Panico’s family. It’s in the former Blue Claw, just shy of the Wildwood Crest bridge. We played inside and out, and met a variety of people either waiting for tables or trying to leave their tables but lacking the strength. The food looked and smelled amazing. And we sound like a million bucks in that bar. Stop on out! We play 6-10. Cape May chanteuse Rose Kelly plays Fridays. This Week’s Sign of the Apocalypse: Boiler Room sound man Brandon Smith and bartender Frezel Burton singing and dancing at Terry O’ke in the Boiler Room last Wednesday (a one-off private party, you didn’t miss anything). It was, in a word… no, there are no words. About that podcast... Now that we’ve actually produced a few, I can officially announce my “next step” on this bountiful journey we call life (god, I’m so poetic sometimes); Talking Arts with Cape May Stage, graciously co-hosted by Roy Steinberg, and The Undertow Podcast, co-hosted by Kevin Ebner and Chris Nagle, are the first two of a projected eight shows we hope to have in production by the end of the summer on The Undertow Network, our home website ( under construction), and are the unofficial “official” podcasts of CMS and EZ. Other shows will focus on the Wildwoods and beyond, as well as music, food and pop culture. I am very excited about this project and hope you are, too. At least some of you. We’ll even take hate-listeners (we get paid by the click). So keep your eyes (and ears) open. It’ll be coming together pretty quickly. To support this and other upcoming projects from The Undertow Network you can — make a monthly pledge at Patreon.com/terryoke1; subscribe to YouTube.com/TerryNOBrien; advertise on one of our shows; terryoke1@yahoo.com for our (very reasonable) rates. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Anthony and Andrew Chrobak from Effort, PA who are in retail management and on their way to the beach. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Elvis Presley. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have mixed feelings about people parking automobiles on the beach. On the one hand, it’s fine for Wildwood. On the other, anyone attempting to do such a thing in Cape May will be met with fire and fury. Literally. But let’s not get high and mighty about the things that park atop, and are buried beneath, our famed beaches. Back before the army corps of engineers was helping out, we found ourselves facing an incoming storm of unheard-of proportions, and needed to make a breakwater. Well, as luck would have it, this very rag was preparing its Special Cape Gay Issue, and so we ran a small ad in the issues that were delivered to Philly, New York City and other Shoebie origin points, declaring a music festival on the beach, at which free beer, and some of the top Vaudeville acts of the day would perform. “Come at midnight tonight!” the ad read. “Park on the beach! For free! And tell your friends to come too!” Well, by 1am, when the wind was picking up and the tide was low, we had directed some 300 venerable automobiles down to the waterline. And there we had our breakwater! What
of the drivers, I hear the fainthearted of you ask, querulously. Were they all right? To you, I say do not worry, shed not a tear and ask no further questions on this subject. Think only of the fact that the beach was saved, and thus the city! And if you hear the forlorn hooting of ghostly car horns at low tide in the dark nights, close the windows and cross yourselves. And it’s not just cars (and perhaps the drivers, or perhaps not) that lie under our pristine sand. We also buried the fabulous treasure of Captain Kidd on the beach, though that plan
was a little flawed in that the map was drawn on a napkin, with barbecue sauce, and I made the schoolboy error of leaving it within reach of the Young Albert of the day, who wolfed it down in one gulp. That, dear friends, is why my evening constitutional takes in a meandering path along the beach, with me brandishing a long pole, which I stick into the sand with every step. Well, that and the Cape May Mermaid, who has never forgiven me for spurning her love and who has been known too snatch feckless men off the beach, never to be seen again. Also, there’s that German u-boat whose crew came ashore to surrender and had too many Dark and Stormys at Martini Beach, and forgot where they parked it. Cape May Beach hides its secrets, we old-timers always say. And just in case she has any problems with this, we members of the top secret Cape May Magic Circle (oops… ex-top secret) are on hand with a variety of concrete shoes and muffled rowboats, to ensure that secrets stay secret, with the odd exception of the occasional high tide.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... it’s Cape May Restaurant Week!
ape May is rich in culinary choices. Any one of our dozens of fine restaurants would be the showpiece of another town. Because so many places are so good, it’s easy to fall into a delicious rut — hit the Lobster House because the vegetarian sister loves it. Get the silver dollar pancakes at Uncle Bill’s for the kids. The Ebbitt Room is always the husband’s first choice — once they served him gourmet grits, he was a forever fan. The problem is, once you hit your favorites, there’s little time to try new places. Restaurant Week to the rescue! Restaurant Week entices you to try something new without breaking the bank. With fixed price menus, participating restaurants offer three-course dinner menus for $35 per person with at least three appetizers, four entrées and three desserts to choose from. Some food trends will never go out of style — the fresh bread at Backstreet is timeless, for example. For those who seek novelty, Cape May is at the forefront of trends
for 2018. Headlines proclaim that poke is the new pho, but Harry’s was serving Hawaiian poke bowls two years ago. Hip ciders are on tap at the Iron Pier Craft House. Craft brewing of beer is still popular, joined in 2018 by craft butter, ketchups and pickles — all can be found right here in town. Unusual protein sources are in — no surprise for fans of the octopus at Mythos or the Washington Inn. The locavore movement is narrowing to hyper-local, a trend Cape May’s farm-to-table restaurants — and 410 Bank Street’s trawler to table — have long embraced. Probiotics — food designed
to promote gut health — are old news, making way for nootropics, such as salmon, turmeric, eggs and dandelion greens. I think I’ve had all of these at Tisha’s. The trendy combination of low-brow and high-brow comes to life in the combination of a grilled cheese sandwich and duck fat French fries at the YB. Sustainable kitchens are in, and Cape May’s chefs are already cooking with carrot tops and bone marrow while ditching single-use plastics. In desserts, look for combinations — the cronut is joined by the townie (a brownie tart) or the ice cream cupcake. Peace Pie seems to have a head start on this trend. In addition to the latest trends, Cape May Restaurant Week also offers flexibility. Some members of your party can order off the restaurant’s regular menu while others choose the fixed menu. Some restaurants offer lunch specials. Beverages, tax, and gratuity are not included, with few exceptions. Visit cmrestaurantweek.com for an updated list of participating restaurants. Make a reservation so you can find your new favorite.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
T
here are few directors whose films I invariably place on a must-see list. Jason Reitman is one of them. His latest film is Tully, starring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron. Reitman has a string of Oscar nominations himself for his films Juno (2007) and Up in the Air (2009), though he’s never won. With quirky films like Thank You for Smoking (2005) and Young Adult (2011, also starring Theron), he has established himself as a young director who has his finger on the pulse of… well, let’s just say on some pulse somewhere. This film is his latest after a break since his lesser-known film, Labor Day (2014), which was panned. Tully is well worth the wait. Theron plays Marlo, a mom in her forties who is pregnant with she and her husband’s third child. Her other two kids are a little older, so this may be classified as an “oops” baby for sure. When Marlo’s life isn’t mundane, it’s just downright frustrating — sometimes painful to watch but you have a heart for her right away. Her older son, brilliantly played by child actor Asher Miles
Theron and Davis excel in Tully Fallica, has special needs. The school where Marlo’s brother is a major donor is subtly (or at least diplomatically) trying to tell her they can’t handle the kid. When Marlo has the baby, she goes into the android mommy routine. It’s a struggle to keep up with the demands. As witnessed by her Oscar-winning portrayal in Monster (2003), Theron can expertly pull off the not-so-glamorous role! The part of frazzled mom? Yeah that can be not-so-glam!
Where is her husband in all of this? Drew, played by Ron Livingston, is sometimes clueless. When there is an incident involving Marlo outside the home, he tells a nurse (paraphrasing), “I don’t know why she would do this. She left the kids alone in the house.” The nurse says, “Weren’t you there?” He says, “Well… yes.” Clueless like that but still likeable. Marlo gets help through her brother, Craig (played by Mark Duplass), who hires a nanny for her to help out overnight. Enter Tully (played beautifully by Mackenzie Davis). She is a dream come true. Takes care of the newborn, cleans the house — heck, makes cupcakes! She gives Marlo the one thing she desperately needs: sleep! With that comes peace. The big “aha” moment in this film will leave you speechless. Suffice it to say: if you can’t take care of yourself, who can you expect to do it for you? There are many more social commentaries, but this one stands out. Put this Reitman film on your watch list... it’s one of his best works!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I don’t know what to do about my grandparents. They are constantly on Facebook. Worse, they share a page, which is so lame. If we visit, they keep their laptop (which they share) in front of them trolling Facebook, asking us to look at this; look at that. They are forever posting pictures of me. It is very sweet, in a weird way, that they are so interested in my life, BUT I don’t want my life out there. Prom pics were bad enough but now graduation is coming up. I don’t like it and you can’t talk to them about it. They think I’m being “too modest” and not “social enough.” It’s my life. Is there no stopping them? — Stalked Dear Stalked Regarding their postings, The Answer Lady is afraid that the only solution is for you
Wise answers to perplexing questions
to avoid their camera. As to their obsession with Facebook, you and your parents have every right to ask them to put the laptop away during visits. If they fail to comply, the visits should become less frequent. It is definitely appropriate to have a talk about this. Why not have them over for a family BBQ? Pick up some hot dogs, hamburger meat or steaks at West Side Market and don’t forget to get one of their homemade pies for dessert. Air your grievances but be aware — they probably won’t listen until you actually stop engaging
with them as long as that laptop is open. Dear Answer Lady My best friend would do anything for me, but she is SO bossy. She has an opinion about everything from what I should wear to how I load my dishwasher. I really can’t stand it anymore. But any criticism of her actions is like an arrow to the heart. I had her and few friends over to dinner the other night and she dominated the conversation. I could see people rolling their eyes and looking for an excuse to leave. I don’t want to end the friendship, but what to do? — Bullied Dear Bullied No need to end the friendship, but a timeout is in order. Put the friendship in the deep freeze for a while and focus on yourself. It’s an excellent time to invest in a mani-pedi at Accents on Beauty followed by an infrared sauna. Adding some nature walks to your routine will also be restorative and put your chi in line. Remember these moments of zen the next time you and your friend get together and try to ignore her machinations. Have more faith in your decision-making processes.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his story is about Pat. She’s a real person with a last name which I avoid here to save her embarrassment because Pat is also a humble person who gives generously of her time. Pat is on the surface a retired grandmother spending a portion of her year in Cape May. She is also a Cape May Bird Observatory volunteer, one of the very special people you meet on a CMBO field trip. I know that she is an active member of her church and every natural wonder she encounters, be it a singing cardinal, a hummingbird building a nest or a morning sparkling with dew, is a message from her creator and her mission as god’s humble witness is to interpret it. She is not preachy. Her enthusiasm gilds every natural encounter with wonder. Through Pat, I have come to think of the natural world as a cathedral and birds akin to feathered acolytes bearing our aspirations aloft, even if these are, at times, no greater than our ambition to know the bird’s name.
At the very least the wealth of birds we find bears witnesses to the health and stability of the natural world and for this we can all be grateful. Every newly arrived species returning from the tropics is a sign that the world between Central and South America and Cape May is functioning as it should. Hallelujah! Cape May is a sanctuary, hosting tens of millions of weary pilgrims every spring and fall. During migration, every shrub and grub-infested yard may mean the difference
between life and death for some northbound wood thrush or ovenbird. While a humble-looking bird, brown-backed and spotbreasted, ovenbird has a loud voice that makes woodlands ring with its signature chant: “Teacher, Teacher, Teacher....” You can find this feathered acolyte in the woodlands of Belleplain State Forest where you may also run into Pat or another CMBO volunteer seeking out insights and being affirmed by the hosts of resident and migrant birds that make up our natural dowery. Almost anyone can go to Belleplain and find ovenbird. The easiest way is to attend a CMBO field trip — visit birdcapemay.org or stop by Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point and pick up a Kestrel Express for 2018 events. Binoculars are a must. If you don’t own a pair, this can be amended by a trip to CMBO. Arrive early, get outfitted and learn the rudiments of using binoculars. It’s as easy as “keep your eye on the birdy” but as difficult, too. First you need to find the bird.

DJ arrived as a stray with a lot of older puppy energy. He loves to run around the yard but quickly returns to make sure his human is still there to continue with the games. DJ loves to ride in the car and quickly claims his spot to watch the world go by. DJ would thrive in a home that has the time and energy to work with his high spirits and exuberance.
PEACHES is a young lady that came to the shelter as a stray. She enjoys being around people and is in the process of learning to walk politely on the leash. While being brushed, she leans in to you for added contact and loves to be petted. She would be the perfect companion for a family willing to continue her training. Adopt Peaches!
SHAKIRA is a mature girl who is well behaved and loves to be with people. She readily climbs into laps when invited and is very affectionate. While taking walks, she displays good leash manners and is interested in surveying her surroundings. Her previous owner indicated Shakira does well with kids and would be a great family pet.
