The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What percentage of America is under the ocean? If we’re talking about our legal jurisdiction, which includes ocean territory, about 50 percent. Another piece of wild, watery trivia? A whopping 94 percent of life on earth is aquatic, meaning us land-lubbers are way outnumbered.

Have you noticed all the bunnies hophop-hopping around the island this year? If it feels like they’re everywhere... they are! Turns out, one female rabbit and her babies (and her babies’ babies, etc) produce 185 billion rabbits in just seven years.
The Southern Mansion was built in 1863 by Philadelphia industrialist George Allen, who wanted to mimic a — wait for it — southern mansion. That’s because, at the time, Cape May — aka the “up North down South” — was very popular among the southern gentry. In the 1940s, when the last Allan descendent passed away, the home began falling into disrepair. By the 80s, it was condemned. Now, it’s been beautifully restored by Barbara Wilde, who operates it as a private B&B.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 18. You have a dime and a dollar. You buy a dog from the Animal Shelter of Cape May County and a collar. The dog costs one dollar more than the collar. How much is the collar?

500 FEET OF WATERFRONT DINING!
Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Carley Mendyk from Mayer’s Tavern is up. How long have you been bartending? Two years. Favorite drink to make? A French martini. I learned how to make a good one at the Lobster House and I really like the color. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer moves the coaster right as I’m about to put their drink down! Biggest tip you ever received? I don’t think about the tips. It’s all about the people I meet.

Did you know that broccoli was brought to America by Thomas Jefferson. He imported broccoli seeds from Italy and planted them in his own garden in 1767. Thanks Tom!

E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Uncle Bill’s Pancake House on the beachfront. The history: This place used to be a circular cocktail bar for Congress Hall in the 1950s. The server: Brianna. She’s a 19-year-old student at Atlantic Cape Community College who gets up at 5:45am to make her morning shift on time. She was one excellent server. The nudity: This was the hot topic at today’s lunch. Diane shared a story she’d heard about a very drunk couple who went skinny dipping on their honeymoon at 3am in Cocoa Beach, FL years ago. When the wife looked around, she noticed her husband was gone — but his clothes and wallet were still on the beach. She assumed he’d drowned, so she called the cops. A search was launched — all beach patrol and police resources were called in (including helicopters) — until, nine hours later, someone thought to knock on the guy’s hotel room door. He answered... still drunk, still naked. Apparently, he’d walked to the hotel in the nude and asked for a new key to his room at the front desk, where a shockingly nonplussed (or maybe blind) employee obliged. The apps: Buffalo wings to start because… Jack. The meal: Two roads diverged in a wood and we, we took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. (Ahem, we ordered lunch instead of breakfast.) Jack went with the tuna melt. Katie ordered a pizza steak. Colleen got a mahi-mahi wrap. And Diane chose the mahi-mahi salad. The nudity, part two: Colleen said she ran into some nude bathers at Higbee Beach over the weekend. While Higbee used to be birthdaysuit-friendly, it’s gotten less so since it’s become a popular spot for families and boaters. Plus, imagine the sunburns! The mistake: Why — WHY — didn’t we think to order a plate of ooey-gooey blueberry pancakes for the table?! Rule number one of lunch club is you don’t talk about lunch club. No, wait, that’s not it. It’s to ALWAYS order pancakes for the table. The consensus: Uncle Bill’s — which is definitely, 100% NOT nudist friendly — isn’t just for breakfast.

Undertow
I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
t’s a sad day at Undertow Central as we said goodbye to a great man last night. More on that later. For now, I’ll try to keep it light and upbeat, even though I am neither of those things. My weeks begin and end at the Rusty Nail, where Tim Joyce and I (TNT Acoustic) play every other Sunday and Monday. Rarely a dull moment. One week it’s the weather chasing us from the outside deck to the inside bar, scurrying like ants from the rain, the next it’s rolling up to the evocative smells of Pig Roast Monday, where the grill sizzles all day and your hapless entertainers perform downwind for four hours in an act of torture so acute if I had state secrets I’d spill them for a single rib. Rusty Nail chef James Burton simply brings it every single day. Thousands of meals for thousands of guests, and every damn one looks better than the last. On Sundays we follow Wesley Ochs at the Nail. He does a nice job warming up the crowd for us from 12-4 then gets out just before the rain starts. A bunch of the usual suspects were out
this week, headlined by the world’s friendliest stalkers, Randy and Wendy Redelico (ding!). They own Redelico Paint up in North-North Jersey and are looking to sell so they can ride off into the sunset. If you know anybody… My second favorite stalker, Rebecca Sundstrom, popped in with my bandmate and third favorite stalker, Sue Polcer, to have a couple cocktails and talk loudly over my amazing vocals about boys and stuff. (I kid, Becca always has nice things to say to me, and Sue talks loud all the time, not just over my amazing vocals.) Sue was in town to meet
up with my fourth favorite stalker, Kathleen Scullion, as they are headed up to the U2 concert. I bet Bono doesn’t have four stalkers... Was nice to see Chief Tony and Barb Marino, along with the Hendersons and Tim’s wife Terri Joyce (with whom I happen to share a name and a birthday). I guess we sounded okay. No arrests were made. Beyond Sunday at the Nail, this was my busiest weekend of the season so far, with five gigs between 4pm Friday and 4:30pm Sunday. That’s a lot of singing for an old guy like me, and by Sunday night I was sounding like a weird mix of Don Henley, Axl Rose and Kim Carnes. I’d complain but it’s not like we’re digging ditches. Better just to lean into it and have a little fun. And a lot of whiskey. For medicinal purposes. Friday we started with a happy hour show at Cabanas, our second, and a new weekly gig for us, 4:00-7:30. This is a fun, low-key gig and a great way to kick off the weekend. The only thing that could make it better is if bartender Mary Sexton would sing. Make sure you bug her about it. She loves that.

Local Honey and So Much MORE
135 Sunset Boulevard, West Cape May 609-425-6434 capemayhoneyfarm.com
Friday night, of course, was Episode #574 (or so) of Terry O’ke at Rio Station. Bar servers Crystal Gruhbe (Ghrube? Grubhe? Eh, whatever…) and Larry Campbell have officially used up all their karaoke goodwill and are now on Triple Secret Karaoke Probation. Otherwise, it’s getting pretty weird over there on Friday nights, which is just how we like it. Saturday Tim and I made our debut at Cape May Distillery in Green Creek. Wasn’t sure what to expect as it’s a little off the beaten path and distilleries don’t get the press that breweries do, so I was very pleasantly surprised at the great turn-out; a full bar and several full tables in the tasting room (and a nicely filled tip jar). Unfortunately Chris Nagle and Bob Daddona were allowed in. It’s a free country, I guess. I took some heat last week from EZ guru Jack Wright for talking about Cape May Distillery so much when they don’t advertise in the magazine and their competitor, Nauti Spirits, does. “Why don’t you get a gig at Nauti Spirits?” Jack asked. The only possible resolution to this quandary is for: (A) Cape May Distillery to take out an ad next week; and (B) Nauti Spirits to book TNT Acoustic. What say ye? Anyway, we finished at the Distillery at 5pm and started at Secondo at 6. Secondo (formerly Axellson’s Blue Claw) was absolutely slammed. Tim and I staked out our corner and played to an appreciative crowd (congratulations to that horse for winning that thing), then we appreciated that ridiculous brick oven sausage, feta and tomato pie. Abbondanza! Secondo is going to have a fabulous year... kudos to the Panicos. Oh, and my fifth and sixth favorite stalkers, Bill and Kimberly Mastrianni, had dinner and drinks at Secondo. I think my life is becoming a Black Mirror episode. I’m going to open a soybased, gluten-free, non-dairy, vegan restaurant and call it
June 14, 2018 What’s the Point? So, as you can see, a pretty crazy weekend. We payed “Margaritaville” eight times, “Brown Eyed Girl” seven times, and I listened to “Castle on a Hill” (Ed Sheeran) 15 times, but never had the guts to sing it. Great song, but it needs to die in a fire. Wasn’t sure what to expect during my last visit to Clary’s Country Corner after cracking a few jokes at their expense recently. Well, turns out they love me there! And Bob Daddona paid for lunch! Win-win! (Get the Cowboy Cheese Steak. Don’t ask questions, just have it.) Patron Saint of Poor Car Owners of the Week: Saint Chuck Matthews of Sunset Towing in Erma. Quite unintentionally, we had some repairs snowball on us at the worst time of year and, well, Chuck is a pretty good guy. He is also an ardent baseball card collector and so nods understandingly when I tell him I have 19 Von Hayes rookie cards. By the time you read this we should have new episodes of Talking Arts with Cape May Stage and The Undertow Podcast up on The Undertow Network (theundertownetwork.com), my fledgling podcast enterprise. To support this and my other artistic endeavors, please visit Patreon.com/terryoke1 and pledge a monthly donation. 100% of proceeds go back into the business for hardware, software and other upgrades. We’ll also have our (very reasonable) advertising rates ready soon. This is your chance to be an early adopter. Lastly this week, at approximately 10pm last Sunday night, my father-in-law, Sal Fiorentino, said his final goodbye, surrounded by his children, in his home, with his wife, when he was ready. The last few years were tough for Sal, but like the ornery little cuss he’s always been, he never gave up, until it was time to give up. He was a father, grandfather, great grandfather, “poppop” to many, and an irresistible force of nature. And now he is gone. So long, old pal. 1924-2018. ’Til next week...

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Angelina, an Outreach worker, and her mom from Forked River, NJ who are spending the day walking around Cape May. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
abhor tattoos, unless they have a story that does not bore me. The thought came to mind when I was visiting a local establishment that I will not name, and was made to wait (something else I despise). While doing so, the receptionist, rather than enquire after my excellent health or my exciting plans for the day, chose to witter aimlessly to a friend on the telephonic device. “So, I’m getting a new tattoo,” she gibbered. “On my ribs. It will say ‘de ja vu’… in French…” I was sorely tempted to suggest she instead get “moron” in English but refrained because that would have been mean, ungallant and also given away the fact that I was eavesdropping. Also, whilst I have had some staggeringly fine tattoos, I have also had some dreadful ones, and as I always say, “Let he who is without subdermal dye, cast the first sterilized needle.” My best is the perfect replica of the sailing ship Cutty Sark on my belly, which, when I flex my impressive seven-pack (a tragic accident in a duel cost me one ab: I will say no more about
it here) the ship seems to be at full canvas in a gale. My worst may be the secret map of the location of Captain Kidd’s treasure, which I had inked on my back, but in reverse, so I could see it in the mirror. The actual map had to be burned, for fear of discovery. My mistake was only that I engaged a tattoo artist who was more about the mood than accuracy. So rather than an exact map, showing local landmarks and a scale, I have a billowing expanse of lovely sand, and a simple “x” in the middle. (I added another smaller “x” myself, with a needle and
ink, showing the unmarked location of the execrable tattoo artist’s resting place). I do, for purely research purposes, wander Cape May’s beaches, studying interesting tattoos, and documenting the interesting ones in pen and ink. Also, I carry a portable needle and ink set, with which I edit those that I consider to be poorly executed, or in fact, stupid: if you are one of those Caucasians who bear some Chinese script on your body, and when asked, can only say “It’s my name!” or indeed a sleeve tattoo suggesting you are Japanese when you are from New Jersey (if you are of Japanese descent AND from new Jersey, you are exempt), or a Celtic anything, then you will be leaving the beach with a choice of one of three designs that are pre-prepared: a kitten playing with a ball of yarn, a quantity of saltwater taffy, or an all-over sun tan ranging from “latte” to “George Hamilton IV”. In special cases, all three will be combined: there is at least one bemused Wildwooder wandering around looking like George Hamilton eating taffy while playing with a small cat.

The Activity Column
A
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, local theater
ll the world is a stage,” as Shakespeare said. Theater fulfills the human instinct for storytelling, teaches empathy, and brings the community together. In addition to these ephemeral benefits, theater boosts the economy, providing jobs ranging from stagehand to star and purchasing goods like wood, textiles and cosmetics. Most people agree that theater is good, but you have to do more than “like” the social media posts. Cape May Stage proves itself worthy of your support with shows eight months of the year. Staying true to their mission to “produce compelling impactful theatre” and to “create a catalyst for audiences and artists of tomorrow,” producing artistic director Roy Steinberg delivers what the audience wants and invites them to stretch a little — there’s generally fun in summer, with more serious themes, including premiers and rare plays, the rest of the year. Equity performers bring their best. Some come from film and television, still brushing the stardust off their shoulders; others are regional talents; all
are eager to share their gifts with an appreciative audience. Some performers bring a built-in love of the area, others discover the Jersey shore for the first time, often bringing kids or dogs. Costume designers suggest an era, a mood or a mindset with deceptively simple design. Lighting doubles as a curtain, suggests time shifts or changes tone. Stage hands move unobtrusively, somehow suggesting that the audience is part of the team, and the audience plays its part, whether they are theater lovers, vacationers or teenagers surprised to find themselves having fun. The “show must go on” attitude
carries on through power outages, storms and injuries. The simplest way to show your support is to buy a ticket. At Wit’s End: The Erma Bombeck Story starring Kate McCauley Hathaway, runs through June 22, while the Neil Simon ode to second chances, Chapter Two, starts June 27. Later in the summer, see Candace O’Donnell in Sarah Bernhardt —La Divine, a benefit performance on August 27. O’Donnell brings the story of the “world’s greatest actress” to life. Learn more about the woman whose talent let her play the teenaged Joan of Arc at age 65, and support Cape May Stage. You can also show your support at the 30th anniversary gala, The Pearl Evening. This night of prizes and surprises features music, dancing, live and silent auctions, food and cocktails, held at the waterside Corinthian Yacht Club, on Saturday, June 16. Tickets are $150. Sponsorship levels begin at Cultured Pearl, $500, and go up to Akoya Pearl, $10,000. Visit capemaystage. org for more information.

ave you ever wondered why you cry at movies? Maybe you don’t cry at all. Okay tough guy... that’s sad for you. Because good movies you feel — not just watch. Now I ask this... Have you ever cried at a documentary? Ah, I may have lost you there! Who cries at documentaries, right? They’re so bland or heady. And true — the bad ones can make you YOL (yawn out loud) more than jerk those tears. But why do we cry at movies? Maybe you cry at a tender reunion or the death of a beloved character — common tearjerkers. Some people cry less, but I admit that I cry a lot. Laura Casely writes for the blog Little Things and says crying at movies shows “that we’re experiencing empathy and being in someone else’s position, even if that person isn’t real at all. So... movie criers [have] a deep and hidden strength.” Yeah, Laura, you tell’m! Even I was admittedly a little surprised about how emotional I got watching Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary about life and accomplishments of none other than Mister Rogers. Do I need to say more? Unfortunately
The gentle icon, Mister Rogers for a generation of people who did not grow up on the PBS television show Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, maybe I do. Fred Rogers was a Pittsburgh-born musician, puppeteer and performer who planned to go into the seminary and belong to the presbyterian clergy. Instead, he went into television and ended up belonging to generations of children who learned from him the importance of tolerance, sensitivity, and treating others and yourself with respect.
And he was a beautiful soul. Certainly, this documentary shares the life and history — even some very revealing facts — about the TV icon. It even gives voice to the opposition who asserted he was creating weak and narcissistic kids. But history has been thankfully kinder to Fred Rogers, lifting him above his critics. Some of those kids are adults now, trying to make a positive difference In the world, trying to counter pervasive divisiveness, fear mongering, and anger. One of those kids was me. To us, Fred represented all that was good in us. So yeah... shut up and hand me another tissue. This is a well-crafted film about a different celebrity — one of profound influence and noble character who taught us one of life’s most important lessons: kindness does not equal weakness...i t does in fact equal strength. Pack some Kleenex and go see it. This column is dedicated in loving memory of Ryan Lanahan, a gentle giant who loved this show when he was a kid, as an adult sported his own Mister Roger’s Sweater and who will always be remembered.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My sister, who says she wants to be a vet someday, took in a puppy about a year ago. She was living with my mother at the time and did not ask my mother about bringing a dog into the household. She has never taken proper care of it, never trained it and never shown one iota of concern for the poor thing. Now, she has moved out of state to live with her boyfriend, leaving the pooping and peeing dog behind. My mother, who has never had the patience to deal with pets, acts as though, “What dog?” I feel so bad for it, but there is nothing I can do. I live in an apartment that does not permit pets. — Unpampered Pooch Dear Unpampered This makes the Answer Lady very sad. All dogs want is to be loved and they
Wise answers to perplexing questions
respond tenfold. The Answer Lady thinks you will have to do two things. One: Contact the Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club regarding upcoming training classes. Two: Contact Cape May Animal Shelter and actively pursue finding the poor pooch a home where he will be welcomed. And, yes, it does seem that you will have to be the one to do these things. Also, if you can manage to get to your mother’s house or sweet talk her into letting the dog out at specific times of the day, that would go
a long way to making everybody happy, particularly the pooch. Dear Answer Lady My wedding is in August and I am still at a loss as to what to give my bridesmaids. There are only four so I want to make their gift special. My mother died last year. Naturally, I was devastated by the loss but more so as I planned my wedding which I thought I would be sharing with her. My bridesmaid just stepped up and took over helping me with every detail from flowers to menu. — Happy Bride = Happy Bridesmaids Dear Happy Bride A trip to Henry’s Landmark Jewelers on the mall is in order. They will guide you to the perfect gift. The Answer Lady is thinking a charm bracelet with one charm, engraved with the date. They can add to it as they, themselves, have special events they want to remember. Every woman loves jewelry, but more importantly when they open their gifts, they will see how grateful you are for their friendship and their support.

Bird Droppings
S
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
orry you missed Cape May Spring Bird Festival. The weather was actually better than projected. Most field trips managed to avoid the worst of the weekend’s rain and bad weather commonly means good birding. The woods adjacent to the Northwood Center in Cape May Point were vibrating with grounded warblers. You didn’t even need binoculars to get in-your-face looks at magnolia, Canada and (gasp, sigh) bay-breasted warblers. The ethereal ping of blackpole warblers was so incessant it approached the level of a din. Sadly, the high pitched call is beyond the range of many older birders. Me? I have trouble in the mid-range, 4000 hertz or so. Thursday, May 17 was one of the greatest birding days in my 60 years of birding. Flocks of migrating shorebirds were coming in off Delaware Bay and there must have been 400 warblers at Northwood. Only raptors were absent. As is typical of thermal-loving birds, they awaited clearing skies. Yep, you missed it. The birds were there. You were elsewhere. But don’t despair, Cape
May Bird Observatory hosts a suit of daily walks all summer. Go online to birdcapemay. org or stop by the Northwood Center, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point and pick up a schedule. Those migrant warblers may be gone, but Cape May’s wealth of breeding birds is compelling and our Associate Naturalists are skilled at getting new birders onto birds. Hint, Hint: When trying to spot a bird moving through branches, let your unaided eyes be drawn to motion. Then, without taking your eyes off the bird, grasp your binocu-
lars with your hands and raise them to fall in line with your eyes and where you are looking. Rule of thumb: Eyes find; binoculars study. No binoculars? We’ll have loaners. You say your binoculars are fogged because of all that rain. That’s because you bought the wrong binocular. Birding binoculars should be waterproof. No splash-proof, rain-proof or water-resistant. Waterproof– capable of being submerged for 20 minutes. Rain or shine, join us on a morning walk. Nobody is going to yell at you when you come home with wet shoes. You’re an adult now. But if you, like me, simply don’t like being wet, you can always retire to the protective confines of the Sunset Grill’s outside deck and watch seabirds. Tell them Seymore sent you. It’s birding economics at work (and play). And who wouldn’t want to enjoy a cup of joe and a breakfast sandwich while watching Sooty Shearwaters glide by the bunker. Just be careful that in your exuberance, you don’t knock over someone’s spotting scope, especially mine.
