Having A Blast At The Ice Ball! Around 10pm In The Brown Room P35-39
Around 11pm At Fins Bar And Grille P41-47
Take around 250 people, erect a giant tent on the lawn of Congress Hall, set up some amazing ice sculptures (an ice bar, anyone?!) and raise a TON of money for public projects, while doing lots of eating, drinking and general indulging. Those are the ingredients of the annual Ice Ball, which puts money into the coffers of the Fund for Cape May, which helped redo Rotary Park and is now targeting a new war memorial park in the center of the historic district. Moore photos inside. Top: Sue and Tom Carroll flanked by friends at the ball. Left: Will Riccio shows his moves with MaryLou Hayko.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. How can the Cape May Acme run out of salt? It does seem like the kind of staple that should ALWAYS be stocked, but you know how quirky our local Acme can be. Plus, too much salt gives you high blood pressure. Eat less of it! That’s this week’s health advisory.

You already know Tina Fey is hilarious. But did you know she’s a Cape May superfan? She regularly vacations on the island, staying on Jackson Street. Oh, and she’s also a fan of writer Craig McManus’ Ghosts of Cape May series.
The Nature Conservancy paid $1.3 million for 477 acres in Green Creek that will be added to Cape May National Wildlife Refuge. It will provide important habitat for wildlife AND support outdoor recreational opportunities.
Poverty Beach on the east end of town was once described as “one of the finest drives on the New Jersey Coast,” according to an 1878 atlas. In the 50s, no longer frequented by hobby motorists, the peaceful stretch became the beach of choice for servants who worked in Cape May, hence the name. Today, some of the area is taken up by the city’s US Coast Guard training center… and a whole lot of happy surfers, though it’s not for beginners.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Every week, we’re offering up a riddle that we first try ourselves. This one stumped us all. Can you do better? Answer is on page 18, but don’t cheat. A trolley driver goes the wrong way on a one-way street. He passes the cops but they don’t stop him. Why?

Ramblings From The Editor
Y
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ou could call it the end of an era... or, more accurately, the end of an error. I’m referring to the meeting of Cape May’s city council last week that settled the saga surrounding former chief of police, Rob Sheehan. Except absolutely no one is happy about the settlement. Sheehan received an $800,000 payout, just over half of which will be paid by taxpayers, the rest by the insurance company. He received the money in return for agreeing to drop the lawsuit he filed against the city after they voted him out of a job three years ago. So is HE happy? Not at all. Sheehan has seen his reputation dragged through the mud, he lost a job he was very good at, and I’m sure he’s had more than a few sleepless nights over it. But the alternative was to take the case to a trial, and we all know that’s a crapshoot, especially in the United States, where juries can drive up payoffs to excessive amounts — or, sometimes, quite the opposite happens. There were at least two other people who weren’t happy at the meeting... council members Bea Pessagno and Roger Furlin. Both
said they would have preferred if the case had gone to trial, where the “facts” would have come out. But they voted for the settlement because they couldn’t take the risk of the city ending up with an even bigger burden. Furlin was especially unhappy — “angry” was his word. And he said the majority of taxpayers would be, too. Too right, Roger. But not for the reason you think. You know why Chuck Lear was appointed mayor in a landslide victory over Ed Mahaney in November 2016? That was the voters letting the city
know what they thought of the Sheehan case. Furlin then made this ridiculous statement: “When residents try to assign blame for this burden, they need look no further than this council and Captain Sheehan.” Roger, the blame lies squarely on YOUR shoulders, plus those of Pessagno and Mahaney, who voted to give Tony Marino the job of chief with a three-year contract, despite the lawsuit that was hanging over the city. That was an act of repugnant defiance, the last foul breath of a dying administration. It stank this whole city up. And it still reeks. Marino should never have got the job in the first place, but at the very least he should have been given the same one-year probation Sheehan got when he first took office. Instead, the city’s hands were tied. Mayor Lear was in fine form at the meeting. “Our decisions should be reinforced by broad and deep analysis and an understanding of the issues and facts involved,” he said. Indeed they should. This didn’t happen in the Sheehan affair. This was the battle that no one won.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Mary Sexton from Cabanas and The Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? 15 years. Favorite drink to make? The southern spiked lemonade from Cabanas. Key ingredient is the fresh-pressed lemon juice. Very refreshing. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When people help themselves to the fruit tray. I will gladly give you as many olives as you would like. Just ask. Biggest tip you ever received? $400. Nice!
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Always Ready Pale Ale Cape May is home to the Coast Guard, so they salute those who are Always Ready with the addition of wheat and oats for a medium body. With aromas of tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and citrus zest, this lush hop-bomb is delicious.
Sunset Liquors Montes Cherub Rosè Wine A seductive, elegant, dry wine with an intense cherry-pink color. Expressive of the grape and its terroir, it shows distinct Syrah character: spiciness and hints of strawberry, rose and orange peel. Pairs well with grilled fish and poultry.
Seafood Report Ever wonder the best time is to eat an oyster or a crab? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. This week, after chatting with several local fishermen, we were informed it’s cod season. Did you know this meaty fish once inspired a war between Britain and Iceland over fishing grounds? Iceland won.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Lucky Bones Backwater Grille. The table by the fireplace. The trivia: A lucky bone is the hook-like claw of the male horseshoe crab, worn by Cape May fishermen in the 1800s for good fortune. The vibe: Cape May casual. Comfortable whether you’re on a business meeting or a Tinder date. (Perish the thought.) The server: Jenni, whose pleasantries are equalled only by her ability to memorize an impressively large list of specials. The occasion: A birthday celebration for our staff artist Mike DeMusz. “I feel fantastic,” he said about turning 40. (Or maybe that was influenced by the Guinness he drank with his appetizer.) The drinks: One mimosa, one Guinness and one Honey Porter from Cape May Brewing Company. (Hey, it’s made with local honey and this is flu season!) Oh, and one Konig Ludwig wheissbeir that came in an embarrassingly large glass. Operations manager Katie Repici is easily embarrassed. The surprise: A marmalade dressing on our beef slider starter. Delightful! The mains: A veggie burger (now being done with a patty AND a portabella mushroom) for the writer. Chicken parmesan and linguine for the boss. A pastrami sandwich for uber-carnivore Katie (she hasn’t seen a creature she hasn’t devoured). And a pork chop sandwich for the birthday boy. (Not a single pizza between us. Weird.) The conversation: That time when Exit Zero was first starting out, and the office was located in a rundown property under construction on Stimpson Lane. One of the builders fell through the roof and into a bathroom Mike happened to be using at the time. Did he help the poor soul or finish up first? “I finished up WHILE helping,” Mike said. Cheers to multitasking! The nice touch: Those cute little hot chocolate shots that come with the check, complete with whipped cream. The consensus: An excellent pick-me-up in the middle of a dreary afternoon. We’ll go back (duh).

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Jeff Long, Curtis Warburton, Jay Brown, Brandon Nash and Rick Lundholm of Cape May Fire Department. Who would they most like to share this bucket with? Well, Cape May Police Department, of course! PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am pleased that Cape May has won the contract for a new private prison. Not only will it provide 100 jobs for those citizens whose natural bent is towards wearing a uniform, and rattling a nightstick along the bars whilst shouting “lights out!” from behind a toothpick and reflective sunglasses. But it will also provide a readymade workforce for several thousand lowlevel prisoners, eager to make amends to society through manual labor. Actually, thanks to a clerical error — the deal was signed after too many malts in The Brown Room — we will not initially be getting the mild-mannered virtually-not-even-criminals-as-such inmates we expected. We will receive those miscreants whose crimes against humanity are so awful, so severe and unforgivable, that they have been gathered from secret black sites around the country to be sent here. We may have to make some minor changes to the plans for the prison, with that in mind: perhaps the knee-high picket fences and the “please don’t leave” signs might
need to be modified to include automated flame-throwers and landmines. Also, we have revised the previous city law that forbade the use of primates as guards and police officers. That was drawn up when our chimpanzee cops, who had until that moment been without complaint (or at least no one who complained had made it to court), were exposed to the theater’s showing of Planet of the Apes and got some very smart ideas. So, as the prison is constructed on the site of the current Emlen Physick Estate, we

will be interviewing all kinds of apes, and possibly bears, to assist in running it. Anyways, as soon as we have security somewhat revised, we will be able to organize the new guests into teams to carry out all kinds of useful tasks round town. Lawns will be mowed, hedges trimmed and ditches dug, even if you don’t happen to have a lawn, hedge or a need for a ditch. And before you say, in your usual astute if irritatingly pedantic manner: “So what happens when we have rehabilitated all of these people? Who, then will populate the chain gangs we have become so dependent upon?” Worry ye not: We are close to signing a deal with Wildwood to incarcerate 5,324 citizens deemed to be at high risk of committing some crime or other eventually. Oops, I realize I have committed a terrible typo which gives a totally misleading picture of our dear neighbors. I didn’t mean 5,324, as clearly there are only 5,325 people living in Wildwood! What I intended to type was 5,325! As if we’d be so callous as to leave one person there alone!

W
hat’s your idea of burlesque? Do you see it as a dirty, exploitive strip show, or a playful, sex-positive flirtation? Do you think of the musical Gypsy and speculate about your gimmick? (I was always partial to Electra, who was electrifying without even trying.) Or do you think of the seedier side of the business that Mama Rose feared her daughter would face? Burlesque in America is an art form born of satire, baptized in vaudeville and raised by Prohibition. British exotic dancers brought burlesque to America in the 1860s, when the British Blondes introduced topical pantomimes and parody songs to an eager audience. American performers put their own spin on the idea, adding elements from “leg shows” and “minstrels” to create a unique form. Comedians and singers took turns onstage with novelty acts which featured mostly female performers, like fire eaters, contortionists, and mimes, who used broad styles to poke fun at the arts they practiced. Eventually, burlesque split from vaudeville,
with the bawdier, more ribald acts staying in burlesque, where they aimed to entertain without breaking the law, leading to a unique blend of tittering and titillation. In the early 20th century, America was entertained by fixed burlesque shows, like Minsky’s in New York, and the burlesque circuit that played nightclubs and dance halls. Alcohol fueled the fun and Prohibition tipped the balance in favor of more skin and less skill. The striptease became the main focus of burlesque, and the form faded when regulators
cracked down on nudity in the 1940s. By the 1970s, when nudity was commonplace in art, burlesque seemed to be dead. In the 1990s, a female-focused “neo-burlesque” emerged, as performers like Dita von Teese reintroduced satire and glamour and used circus skills and arial silks alongside exotic dancing to reclaim their own sexuality. Audiences responded in droves, with women making up the majority of the crowd. Of course, it’s not for everyone critics don’t see the metaphorical middle finger neo-burlesque claims to flip at the patriarchy. That performers don’t care whether you like their attitude is perhaps the defining characteristic of burlesque’s present form. You can check out a salute to burlesque when Elaine’s presents “The Vintage Vixens of Valentines.” Love is the focus of the night, and where there’s love, humor follows. This show is for mature audiences only. Tickets are $30. Performance is Friday, February 16 at 8pm at Elaine’s, 513 Lafayette Street. Come early for cocktails. For more information, call 609-884-5404. Next week: Winter Beer Garden

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I work in small office where we are required to dress and I feel one of my colleagues is dogging me. I take great pains to find the appropriate outfits and accessories and I get many compliments from my coworkerd. Two weeks later this one particular woman would be wearing almost the same outfit. One day she even had the exact same necklace that I wore a month before at one of the dinners we attended. I was so angry I nearly ripped it off her neck. I know that this is a superficial concern, but she creeps me out. Should I say something? — Cloned Dear Cloned No, you can’t say anything. A: She’ll deny it. B: You give her credit for looking good — even though it is your look she’s replicating. Face the fact that she is envious of your good

taste and style and do not for one minute think that your co-workers have not noticed. To assuage your discontent, go shopping. Fit & Chics and Victorious are both under one roof on the mall and will deck you out in fine fashion. With regard to the necklace — wear it. If she happens to wear it the same day, get your timeline in order and that will be the end of that. Dear Answer Lady Another Valentine’s Day has gone by and still no engagement ring. My boyfriend and
I have been dating for five years and he has deftly avoided any discussion that involves a wedding. “You know I love you,” he says and then I melt and all is forgotten. Should I be content with my lot and just shut up? He is a good boyfriend. He’s kind and generous but I want more. Is that wrong? — Waiting to Exhale Dear Waiting Oh please. Of course you have a right to want more. Of course you have a right to want a future with the man you love. The question you have to ask yourself is why he doesn’t want that. Quit waiting and decide if this is a dealbreaker and act accordingly. Before you make any rash decision, however, visit Bath Time and have the staff prepare a soothing scent created just for you. Choose the accompanying bath products and indulge, giving you time to exhale and think this through. When you’re ready, sit “Mr Right” down and have a heart-to-heart. Perhaps he is blissfully unaware of your angst – men are like that. Sometimes they need a good prodding.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he eagle has landed. No, not the lunar lander or the Philadelphia football franchise, but the real deal, the f lesh-and-feather emblematic bird that so inspires emulation. Cape May County hosts at least four bald eagle nests; nearby Cumberland County seven. Salem County? I lose track. Where 20 years ago the bald eagle was accounted a rare bird in our region, now it ranks among our most common breeding raptors. Why this sudden turn around? First, because our region, blessed with a surfeit of open fish bearing water, large trees for roosting and nesting is eminently suited to meeting the bird’s needs. Add to these advantages a large osprey population and the absence of human persecution, and what you get is ideal eagle habitat. Osprey are fish-catching machines and the larger eagles appropriate a portion of the osprey’s catch. Protection from human persecution means eagles are free to live a life as long as 20 years. At present the challenge eagles face
m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s
seems to be finding a suitable nest tree, one capable of supporting the bird’s massive stick nests, which may be 18 feet in depth and weigh in excess of two tons. Just as birds of prey have long served as emblematic mascots of conquering armies and sports franchises, they now serve as indicators of environmental quality. When predators at the top of the food pyramid thrive, it signifies a healthy ecological foundation. As the chant goes, “Fly eagles, f ly.”
So the next time you see a large, plankwinged bird of prey soaring over the lighthouse, know that it represents a celebration of sound environmental planning and a token to the human resolve to keep our environment clean and safe. Just as the players of the Philadelphia franchise dominate football, real eagles dominate the airspace over our region. Only an osprey might find fault with this. But given the health of fish populations, osprey are too busy carting fish to their own young to grudge bald eagles. Due back any day now, newly returned osprey will find resident bald eagles eagerly awaiting their arrival and newly hatched eagle chicks awaiting their tribute of fish. What species of fish? With birds of prey, typically the most abundant prey species are targeted. In Delaware Bay, this means menhaden, aka bunker. A good technique for finding eagles is to watch osprey with a menhaden in its talons. This is how osprey troll for eagles... and the beneficiary is you.

The Movie Column
T
“Phantom Thread” is reviewed by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
he movies seem to be filled with all sorts of mis-matched couples carrying bucket loads of dysfunction. So what’s wrong with one more? Hey, happy belated Valentine’s Day! Phantom Thread is the final movie featuring the Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis. He plays Reynolds Woodcock, a famous and fastidious dressmaker. Okay, maybe he’s a little crazy. He lives with his sister, Cyril (Lesley Manville), in a larger-than-life mansion. The time is 1950, and the setting is London. Reynolds is a self-proclaimed eternal bachelor. Cyril dotes on him, knowing on which side her bread is buttered. The two share breakfast one morning with his latest disposable companion. The third wheel is squeaking about how she’s not feeling loved. Reynolds heads to the family country estate a day early, leaving his sister behind to send the latest girlfriend away. During his trip, he stops at a local restaurant for breakfast. There, he meets the latest subject of his desire, Alma (Vicky Krieps). He is immediately smitten.
The relationship between the two is never ideal, but somehow it works. Well... sort of... In the beginning, what works is that she has the right body for him to design and try new dresses. I know, right? This Reynolds seems like a real substantial guy. The age gap between the two is very alarming at more than 25 years — I almost always find old geezers and young female leads very unappealing in a love story. Still, Krieps is well-cast against Day-Lewis. She handles the role with grace and silent authenticity.
Oh, wait. Maybe not so silent. She butters her toast too loudly at breakfast. That is one of his complaints. Can you imagine? But the couple works somehow. Well… how it works… is the best part of the story. Let’s just leave it at that. The movie is nominated for six Oscars including best picture, best directing, best costumes, and best original score. Day-Lewis and Manville are nominated for lead actor and supporting actress. And all well deserved. Like the dressmaker protagonist, this film pays particular attention to detail — thanks to director/writer Paul Thomas Anderson. One of Anderson’s best known films is There Will be Blood (2007), for which Day-Lewis won one of his three Best Actor awards. If you’re looking for a romantic date night, this could be a good plan. I guess it depends on where you are in the relationship. If there was an award for best awkward but charming couple, these two would take it. I’m sure it’s not meant to be a comedy, but I found it to be humorous throughout. Whether that’s to its credit or not I will let you decide.

SANDY is a chow chow mix who is looking for a caring “retirement” home. She was adopted from Canada and lived in a home until three years ago when her owner died. Since then she has been living outside and has developed severe arthritis in her back legs. Hopefully there is a caring individual who will open their home and heart to Sandy.
SHADY is a three year old mastiff mix who lived with his litter mate and family until they surrendered both dogs to the shelter due to apartment regulations. Shady lived in the same household for his entire life and is house trained, well mannered in the home, enjoys car rides and is friendly towards people. Adopt this sweet boy today!
MASON is a three year old, well mannered, and affectionate pitbull mixed breed. He was surrendered to the shelter because his owner’s circumstances did not allow him to keep Mason. He was loved in his home and lived with another dog and children. Mason is calm and happy meeting new people and would do well in an active family.
