Will Run For Wine! Arguably the best thing about running? The guilt-free drinks after you’re done, of course. Last Saturday, Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery hosted the Fourth Annual Scurry for Sangria 5k, in which finishers were met with refreshing, fresh-made sangria or wine (hey, you have to hydrate, right?) and souvenir wine glasses. Participants who braved the humidity came for the exercise and stayed for the after-party featuring food vendors, live music and games. More photos inside...

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What is the deal with Circus Peanuts? They’re one of the most divisive candies on the planet and one of the oldest. (Read: Late 1800s.) Rumor has it this weird, banana-flavored marshmallow led to the creation of Lucky Charms after a General Mills employee chopped them up in his Cheerios and fell in love.

You already know Norman Rockwell was prolific in his famous paintings of smalltown Americana. But did you know he drank Coca-Cola for breakfast, had the middle name of Perceval and vacationed in Cape May Point in 1962?
New Jersey has the toughest fertilizer laws in the nation. Problem is, they’re difficult to enforce, and not many know about them. Remember: It’s illegal to apply fertilizer during or just following heavy rain, since doing so can harm the ocean.
South Cape May used to be a town of about 225 acres and 50 bungalows, many of them occupied by year-round residents. The Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944 destroyed most of the colony, while a 1950 storm wiped out the rest. Today, this area, which stretches parallel to Sunset Boulevard from Patterson Avenue to the Point, is a preserved refuge for migratory birds comprised of meadows and freshwater wetlands. The walking trails provide a serene place for communing with nature and history.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 18. Cape May has only two barbers. One of the barbers has a nice, tidy haircut, and the other has a shaggy, messy haircut. Which barber should you go to?

Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
here has, rightly, been a lot of talk about making Cape Island a whole lot more bike-friendly. On a recent trip to Europe, I was blown away by how many people commuted to work in Copenhagen (and ferrying their kids to school on bikes, too). It’s great for the environment, it’s great for the human body — and for a place like Cape May, it only adds to the serenity of this place. But there will be challenges, some bumps in the road, which is obvious to anyone who drives (or cycles) along Broadway. That road recently got a much-needed repave. And it also got a new “bike lane.” Previous to the roadworks, that lane only began after Central Avenue, where Broadway turns into Seashore — aka the land of Lower Township (where the really cool people live). Now, there’s a lane in West Cape May. And this must be disconcerting to visitors on bikes who are unfamiliar with the territory since this lane is, often times, populated by a LOT of vehicles. To my eyes, there has been a big increase recently in the amount of parked
cars on that side of Broadway, but maybe that’s just because I’m noticing them because of the lines. In any event, these parked cars are not breaking the law. You can presumably put the blame for this confusion on the county, who have responsibility for Broadway and who employ the contractors who repaved it — and painted those lines. I spoke to Cape May police chief Tony Marino this week, who said the addition of the “bike lane” in West Cape May was a cond-
undrum. “When folks see these lanes, they will expect certain behaviors,” he said. “But this is not a bike lane, so it might cause some misunderstandings. People have always parked on that side of the road. But with discussions on the new island-wide initiative, this might be something we need to look at.” Chief Marino said his department would be discussing the matter with West Cape May commissioners this week. In the meantime, bikers stay careful on that road. And motorists, keep your eyes out for bikers. Just off Broadway, on Sunset, you’ve probably noticed that big, ugly gray metal building going up. And you maybe wondering when something is finally going to happen there. Well, my best guess is that Exit Zero Filling Station will be open in time for my birthday, July 7. Watch our Facebook page for more details. Happy Fourth! Stoopid error on page one last week. I wrote that Michael Carleton was the founder of Cape May Stage when, in fact, it was the late, great Michael Laird. Got my Michaels in a twist. Mea culpa.

Bartender Of The Week
All-You-Can-Eat Blue Claw Crabs!
Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Sara Werner from The King Edward Bar is up. How long have you been bartending? 10 years. Favorite drink to make? An old fashioned. I love putting a little muscle into it and then putting in the extra love with a garnish. Getting to burn the orange peel is always a fun show. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer orders the same complicated drink one at a time. Biggest tip you ever received? Don’t throw actual rocks in customer’s glasses.

Produce Report Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that onions are in season. Did you know that the oldest known cultivation of onion dates back to around 5,000 BCE? This means that they have been around for some 7,000 years. Also, one way to get rid of onion breath is by eating parsley.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Cold Spring Grange restaurant on the 30-acre grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village. The building: The Grange — now listed in the State and National Historic Registers — was constructed in 1912. Originally, it served as a gathering place for local farmers to discuss business, politics and gossip. It is the only property at Historic Cold Spring Village — a living history museum that seeks to promote New Jersey’s heritage — that stands in its original spot. The vibe: The Grange has all the charm you’d expect from such an historic building. Plus, it’s light and airy and inviting, with an outdoor porch overlooking the lush grounds of the Village. The accident: Our fingers were more buttery than our rolls! We spilled water all over the table and broke one glass. Thank you to the understanding waitstaff for making us feel a little less embarrassed. The apps: The pierogies with caramelized vidalia onions and sour cream got two thumbs up from our resident Polish employee. (Serious question: If people from Poland are called Poles then why aren’t people from Holland called Holes?) We also highly recommend the French onion soup. The mains: The cedar plank salmon with lemon sabayon broth and tomato and fennel salad was the best. No, wait. The shrimp and grits with bacon chutney was the best. No, wait. The burger with housemade fries was the best. No, wait. Everything’s the best, and that’s just the way it is. Don’t @ us. The run-in: We saw the lovely Angela Monaghan, veteran of Cape May City’s Beach Patrol. She’ll be getting married at The Grange this September. Did we mention this is a lovely place for a wedding? The bonus: The Grange is BYO and that’s just perfect, because the restaurant is situated next to Cold Spring Brewery, which operates out of an 1804 English-style Cape May County barn. After your meal, buy a pint of the malty-delicious Cold Spring Red, grab a picnic table outside and watch the fireflies come to life.

Undertow
I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
would love to talk politics in this little column, but I also enjoy dining out and going to the movies... For those who have asked, my return to Exit Zero was prompted by several events — working in Cape May for the first time since 2009, a burning desire to see my name in lights again, a burning desire to make fun of others in print. But I knew it was time to come back in February, when I saw one of the best pictures of me ever taken, by EZ photog extraordinaire Aleksey Moryakov, during a Beatles show, behind the mic, singing passionately, looking pretty okay in my suit and tie, accompanied by the caption, “Terry O’Brien — the constipation must have been strong.” How much more of an invitation do you need? We kicked off Carney’s Terry O’ke with a “soft” opening Tuesday. I wasn’t sure what to expect, it being my first time hosting there (after 13 years of Joe Carney chasing my skirt; congratulations, Joe! You finally got me!), and how DOES one prepare their expectations for a night at Carney’s? Pro tip: You can’t. Karaoke started around 9 and by 9:15
the place was jammed. To the point they had to open the second bar and snag a bartender from the Other Room to handle the volume (unintentional music pun). My friends Victoria “Vicky” Defrancesco, Francis “Don’t Call Me Francis” Mikulak and Dave “Just Dave” Tooley served as judges. We trimmed 16 contestants down to five, with my man C.J. (a Rio regular) taking home first prize with… (checks notes) … “Mother” by Danzig. Yes, you read that right. We’ve also started our Family Karaoke shows at Carney’s, Tuesdays, 530-830, so
bring the wee lads and lasses down to sing and please God, let little girls be tired of Frozen by now. And Wednesday at Carney’s is Family Fun day, with loads of cool stuff for the kids and discounts and whiskey for the adults. Win-win. Check it out. Shout-out to bartenders Tom McKeefery, Eric Fletcher and Taylor Mahon, who had to put up with the volume and THE VOLUME! Congratulations to all the kids and teachers at Cape May Dancers for another outstanding recital weekend. And to all the friends and parents who shuttled our kids around while I worked and our other car went into the shop (again). Heather Sporl Oliver, you may not be getting your Navigator back. While Jackson danced (amazingly), Owen worked the curtain and Henry hung out with his friends Jeffrey Larsen and Shea Booth, talking about whatever 12-year-old boys talk about. Farts and boobs probably. Attended the recital with my old friend Edward Kohl, hairdresser at Artizan Salon & Spa. It was the second time hanging with Edward in a week after not seeing him for

about five years. These hangouts are generally bad for my liver. If you’ve been keeping up with Undertow you’ve seen me mention my Patreon account (a monthly crowd-sourcing site). Well, feel free to hop in there this month and throw in a buck. After losing the first hour of Terry O’ke at Rio Station to a frozen laptop, I think it’s time for a new computer and I’m flat busted. Patreon. com/terryoke1. Otherwise it was a fun night of karaoke, with appearances by old friends Darlene Tschopp and Tom Cupp. Darlene was an early adopter of Terry O’ke way back in 2005 and still pops out when she can. And I used to direct shows for Tom in the pre-2000 Dark Ages. It was like the world’s strangest family reunion. Tim Joyce and I had quite the day at Beach Shack on Sunday. The place was packed, the vibe was excellent and our tip jar was overflowing! One of our friends snuck a $50 in there. With Chris Dillon, Paul Farnan and Brian O’Conner and family in attendance it was like 1995 up in here. Brian was, and, I suppose, still is, the reigning Shipwreck Saloon Sing Along with the Band Contest Champion of 1995 (we only had the one) and joined us to sing “Piano Man”, to which he remembered a solid 47% of the lyrics. (And, I think, dropped that $50. Thanks, bro.) Brian asked if my angry Elaine’s rant from a few weeks back was about him. I will, for once, deny the urge to make a joke here and simply say... it was not. Young Karli Witten hopped up and joined me on “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran, which I finally worked up the nerve to sing. I asked her if Jackson, her prom date last month, behaved like a gentleman, to which she replied “Of course”, deeply disappointing his father. Rachel Sheets, who was there to celebrate her 21st birthday and have her first ever drink with mom, Gina, helped us out with Blues Traveler song (keeping the 1995 vibe going). Seems like just yesterday I was hosting
June 28, 2018 karaoke at her eighth birthday party. Would you damn kids stop aging, please? You’re making the rest of us look bad. We had several guest singers ranging in age from 13-30, in flagrant violation of Beach Shack’s “No Guest Singers” policy, for which I will receive a strongly worded email from entertainment director Myra Vassian. In my defense, Myra, I really didn’t feel like singing those songs. Had a liquid mood enhancer sent my way by Joe Matteo in appreciation of the brief tributes I wrote to my late father-in-law, Sal Fiorentino. Joe has been enjoying Undertow since its 2003 inception and even goes back to my early 90s days at Elaine’s. He asked me how Sal Riggi was doing, I told him I killed him (Murder-Oke, 2006) but hoped to see him at Carney’s karaoke this summer. Thanks, Joe. After the show I was well taken care of by Jamie Saporito and Kyle “K-Rod” Rodriguez (what’s with all the nicknames this week?) as I watched the end of the Phillies game (this year Adrian Beltre, next year Manny Machado) and briefly chatted with Krystina Kennedy, who ragged me a bit for dubbing her one of the Four Horseladies of the Apocolypse in a 2008 column about karaoke at The Ugly Mug. I assured her that, though I don’t specifically recall writing it, it was all in jest. In return she gave me pestilence. (When I really need famine.) Quote of the Week: “You’ve got a pretty great voice for a big guy.” — Rusty Nail patron Pat. Lastly, while production on new episodes is on hiatus while Chris Nagle (WIBG) is on paternity leave, you can still head over to The Undertow Network (theundertownetwork.com) and listen to our first few podcasts. They get progressively better and by the end of the summer might actually be good. Regardless, give them a listen while you’re on the beach or on your commute. Even if you don’t like me. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Sophie Idilbi and friend who are academics from Washington DC on their way to Atlantic City. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Anthony Bourdain. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
t’s time, dear hearts, to select a volunteer to ensure next year’s harvest is a good one. Of course, by “harvest” I do not mean just corn and suchlike, but the annual crop of Shoebies and random strays who follow the highway and end up here, puzzled, delighted, and if traveling alone without having told anyone, likely to stay forever. And by “volunteer” I mean a randomly selected tourist. What is it for, I hear you ask? Well, we don’t take such things as successful summers, a continued absence of volcanic eruptions, or a lack of plagues of frogs falling from the sky for granted. Rather, we appease the old gods with a few choice offerings. How quaint, how olde worlde, I know you are thinking! And you’re right! It was an ancestor of mine, Thor “Hamsterbane” Olaffson, who brought the concept of vengeful old actual gods with him, along with — if you believe the legends — a grumpy and rather baleful Thor. So, we simply offer up our volunteer, prepared just the way a gang of brutish old Norse gods like, and then sit back and expect another bumper year! Easy, and painless.
Well, “painless” in that for most of us it’s easy. Before you scoff, or cry about “human rights”, I want you to pause and look up from this delectable rag, take in the wee bit o’ heaven that is Cape May and ask the person sitting next to you: “How is it possible that such a place can exist?” If they smile hopefully at you, with maybe a twinkle in their eye, feel free to add my never-fails line: “And that it contains an angel like you?” No need to thank me. If they answer “human sacrifice,” then tell them they have said too much, and that I will
be along soon to strike them in the head. But we have made a small change in the volunteer process this summer: in the past we simply scooped up whatever ne’er-do-well/ tax collector we happened on, and considered it done. But the Olde Gods are no fonder than we are of the latter and so we have had to pick from a way more prime selection of volunteers. Namely, readers of this fine newspaper. Now, don’t get all fluttery, assuming you will look up and see a trio of burly men with nets. The odds are against that. No, we have printed a lottery number on each and every copy of this paper, and only the reader who has the winning (“winning”) number will be chosen. If you think about it, it’s actually a rare honor: your descendants will receive a signed certificate (once the statute of limitations for the crime of “sacrifice to Ye Olde Gods” has passed), stating that you died a Hero of Cape May, a title that confers a lifetime supply of lima beans to your line. I am afraid that only the following number printed below will ensure you are a “winner”... 59987.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr
hen Martin Luther King, Jr came to Cape May to speak to a gathering of Quakers, he had yet to become an icon. He was the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the successful Montgomery bus boycott was behind him, but Selma, the Nobel Peace Prize, and the March on Washington were yet to come. He was only 29 and could not know that he had but a decade to live. King came to a town that still bore traces of segregation. His contemporaries were the last class graduated from the Franklin Street School, and African-American beachgoers were limited to Grant Street beach, by custom if not by law. King came to speak to the Quakers, or Society of Friends, who gathered to burnish their “radical faith.” Since 1868, Quakers have held a “Friends General Conference” in various forms in the United States and Canada. Cape May hosted for the first time in 1916, and was the steady host from 1928 to 1962. King’s topic was “Nonviolence and Racial Justice,” and the audience
was apparently receptive to both topic and speaker. The Quaker tradition of social activism matched the goals of the SCLC, whose founders hoped to harness the organizing power and moral authority of black churches to “conduct nonviolent protests in the service of civil rights reform.” The 382-day boycott that had pushed Montgomery to integrate its busses had demonstrated that the technique could work. King’s speech likely included the definition of agape, the Greek concept of fellowship which allows you to seek peace with those who hurt you, and it likely ended with King’s confidence that justice was inevita-
ble. It was perhaps a more optimistic speech than later works, for the young King had yet to come to the “regrettable conclusion” he describes in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” that “the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice.” Perhaps he had yet to tire of being asked to wait for a “more convenient season.” Cape May will present A 60th Anniversary Celebration of King’s visit this Wednesday, June 27 at 7pm at Convention Hall. The program will include excerpts of King’s speech read by Derrick McQueen, a New York City pastor with a theater background; an examination of the context of the speech by Harold Dean Trulear, associate professor of applied theology at Howard University; and musical selections.” Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by the city, Center for Community Arts and Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts.

The Movie Column
T
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Coco”
his week I saw three movies, but I only have this one column (so I have to choose). There were two blockbuster sequels out in theaters, Deadpool 2 and The Incredibles 2, and an Oscar winner, Coco, which probably very few of you saw and is now out on Netflix. Yeah, I choose Coco. I saw this Disney Pixar animated feature when it came out in theaters in 2017, but it was Oscar season and I had a lot of movies to review — so I never reviewed it here. Honestly, the first time I saw the movie, I had mixed emotions. On one hand, its theme of remembering deceased loved ones is unmistakably profound. On the other hand, all that is packaged in a kid’s film that I didn’t think too many kids would understand or appreciate. Seeing it again, now it dawned on me — Coco is unique. Instead of offering an animated film for kids that adults can appreciate (think Shrek or Toy Story), Coco actually offers an animated film for adults that kids will find fun.
Coco is unmissable and not just for kids Miguel’s family has had a decades long ban on music in the house. His great-grandfather was a musician who picked up his guitar and left the family to find stardom. Miguel (played by Anthony Gonzalez) is a young boy and aspiring musician forbidden to play music in his home. He goes out each day to shine shoes and borrows street performers’ guitars to practice. On the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday, Miguel visits the local mausoleum of leg-
endary guitarist and songwriter Ernesto de la Cruz (oh and steal the guitar from inside). When he picks up the guitar, he is mystically transported to the Land of the Dead. There, he begins a journey that rivals any epic tale. I’m not sure what resonated with me more the second time I saw Coco. It won Oscar for best animated film and best song. Maybe it was the sweeping beauty of the Land of the Dead. Maybe it was the profundity of what happens to poor souls who are no longer remembered in this life. Whatever it was, suffice it to say this film was even better the second time around. Children laugh and love the movie, but don’t pass it up as something for kids. No this rare gem was really meant for adults. Now, just a word about Deadpool and The Incredibles — both noteworthy sequels. Deadpool is as raunchy as ever but gets the laughs if you’re not easily offended. The Incredibles delivers after 14 years since the first installment, and comes with both innovative superpowers and a welcome lack of clichéd storytelling. Both are worth seeing.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I usually go out on Fridays with two other couples, but lately we have not. Last week, my husband said he was meeting one of the couples at Harpoon’s by the Bay and did not invite me. I’m not a big drinker, but that should be irrelevant. I told him I was going and that was that. But, don’t you think there’s something off in that kind of behavior? I’m still obsessing about it. My question is, should I continue to make a deal about it or just fahgettaboudit. — Dissed Dear Dissed Perhaps not make a big deal about it but ask what the thought process was that made him think that would be acceptable. That said, guys think differently about social situations. It was a big deal to you, but his
Wise answers to perplexing questions
thinking probably went something like: she doesn’t like to drink that much so I won’t bother her. On the other hand, if he thinks because you do not drink as much, you are not fun to be around — that’s a whole other scenario. The Answer Lady suggests you wait and see if he repeats his thoughtless actions. In the meantime, take yourself to Ostara’s Coffee House for an amazing sandwich and afternoon entertainment. Dear Answer Lady My best friend’s ex has let me know she
would like to go out with me. I have to admit that I do like her, but she and my friend had a bad break-up and I’m afraid my dating her would not go so well with him. It has been about six months since they ended it. I’ve thought about dating her on the sly at least until I see how it works out. What do you think? — Interested Dear Interested In a small town like this when people know what time you take a shower? You must be kidding. No. You cannot date her on the sly. Ask her out. Take her to SeaSalt which is a little more private. Tell your friend the day of the date. Tell him you don’t know how things will go but you want to give it a try without it interfering with your friendship. Be prepared for a chilly reception. It can’t be easy for him. And also be prepared for him to tell you why they broke up, that is if you don’t know already. If the two of you continue to date, things will no doubt settle down. But for god’s sake do not date “on the sly.” That is so lame.

ets go down to the beach and watch the sandpipers playing tag with the waves.” Pregnant idea, but stillborn as a plan. Those sandpipers, more accurately called sanderling, are thousands of miles away from here in June. They breed in the high Arctic. The birds you see on the beach are migrants or winter residents and they won’t arrive here before late July, when the nesting season draws to a close. Winter birds in July? Yes, shorebirds keep a different calendar. By July the Summer Solstice has passed. Every passing day finds the sun lower in the Arctic sky as the northern hemisphere inclines toward winter. Typically, adult shorebirds start heading south as soon as the young can fend for themselves. Still wearing vestiges of their copper-colored plumage, these migrating adult birds will gather in small flocks and forage in the wave zone. Their primary prey are the tiny mole crabs that lie just beneath the surface. Young birds? They typically reach Cape May in August and are distinguished by scaley-like backs.
m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s
Mole crabs lead a precarious existence. They are also a favored prey of the American oystercatcher, an orange-billed cantaloupe-sized shorebird that resembles a bird wearing a tuxedo, smoking a carrot. When flushed they emit a series of shrill whistles. Unlike most shorebirds, oystercatcher, do breed locally and their young, resembling puffballs on stilts need your help. Still unable to fly, young oystercatchers are easy prey for unleashed dogs. When walking the beach between Cape May and Cape May Point,
please leash your dog. Sadly, one species you will no longer see along this stretch of beach is the piping plover, a sanderling-sized beach nesting shorebird whose young are easy prey for fish crows, who learned that the wire exclosures used to protect breeding plovers signaled dinner when young plovers ventured out to feed. But back to migrating shorebirds. Even though sanderling are not here yet, several other sub-Arctic breeding shorebirds are, or will be, come July. These include greater yellowlegs, short-billed dowitcher and least sandpipers. Not typically found on beaches. Most “sandpipers,” are mud pipers, partial to foraging on mud flats or salt marsh ponds. To see these species you can take a back bay cruise or attend a Cape May Bird Observatory to the South Cape May Meadows. The definitive text on shorebirds was written by three local experts — Michael O’Brien, Richard Crossley and Kevin Karlson. You can pick up your copy at CMBO 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point.

PUP PUP is only 7 months old and his life has already taken an unfortunate turn when his owner could no longer keep him. He is full of puppy energy and enthusiasm and is eager to learn behavior cues. Pup pup loves to be with people and constantly displays his happy grin to the world. If your looking for a young companion adopt today!
ZELDA is vivacious young girl who loves to play in the pool, run around the yard and go for a walk. She has an engaging personality that will make you smile. Just when you think it is impossible to find her more appealing, she climbs into your lap. Zelda is at the shelter waiting for the perfect person to accept her into their family. Adopt!
LIZZY is a calm and friendly pointer/lab mix. She is very gentle and walks extremely well on the leash. 1140 ILLINOIS AVENUE, CAPE MAY Pride of ownership is evident throughout this expanded Village Greene Twin. The original structure, which consists of living room, eat-in kitchen, 2 bedrooms, bath, front porch and storage area, has been dramatically enhanced with the addition of a large family room/ dining room/den in the rear of the house — just off the kitchen. This expansion allowed for the addition of a second full bath to create a master bedroom. The rear family room also has the ability to be transformed into two rooms, by utilizing the unique built-in sliding room divider. There is a detached 1 1/2 car garage and a fenced in rear yard for your furry family members. Kitchen upgrades in 2015 include granite counters, stainless steel appliances, recessed lighting, porcelain tile floor and “portable” kitchen island. Settle then swim. Buyers just need to bring their bathing suits to closing — this place is that well maintained. $479,900
