Birthday Brews For CMBC Euro Night In Carney’s Other Room P46-59

Cape May Brewing Company celebrated seven years in business last Friday. The party began at their tasting room on the grounds of Cape May County Airport (pictured above) and ended at Cabanas (left), CMBC’s first client, where the good people of Cape May first supped on a brew made by Ryan Krill, Chris Heinke and Bob Krill. In a press release, co-owner Ryan said, “I remember when we began, brewing up a 12-gallon batch of IPA and hoping that someone gets lost enough in the airport to stumble into our unit. The support we’ve seen since then is nothing short of humbling.” Congrats to the brew crew, and thanks for seven years of tasty memories.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What is heliotropism? It’s the practice of following the sun. For instance, a young sunflower will face the sun in the east in the morning, and continue tracking it across the sky throughout the day. But we think the word could just as easily apply to Cape May’s beachgoers.

Ron Howard, acclaimed director and actor known for roles in Happy Days, stayed at The Harrison Bed and Breakfast on Columbia Avenue in April of last year. He is the only surviving original cast member of The Andy Griffith Show.
Jellyfish may be a beach day bummer, but they’re pretty cool. Some species clone themselves, some glow in the dark and one type may even be immortal. (They revert back to their polyp stage whenever they’re stressed... must be nice!)
Fin’s Bar and Grille added color and excitement to Cape May’s restaurant scene after a top-to-bottom renovation in the summer of 2015. The bar — a 1.5inch rippled glass top illuminated with edge-lit LED — has become one of the city’s go-to places. And behind it sits a 600-gallon saltwater fish tank. The food is equally enticing — that Cape May seafood chowder is a tasty reminder that you’re in one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in all of America.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 18. Two fathers and two sons went fishing off Cape May. They were there the whole day and only caught three fish. One father said, that is enough for all of us, we will have one each. How can this be possible?

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
T
his weekend, the wife went to the beach with her parents, aka my in-laws, and her aunt. It ended in a yelling match about politics. It all started after a man several yards away erected a 20-foot Trump f lag that incited a debate between a family nearby. It then spilled over into my wife’s camp. Diane, not a big drinker, came home eager for a large tequila or two. Neither my wife nor her family are big yellers. They’re typically pretty subdued people who enjoy their beach time and each other’s company. But... people are divided in this country like I’ve never seen before, and now it’s spilling on to the beach. As a career journalist, I’m pretty big on free speech and all that good stuff. But maybe we should consider adding the hoisting of political paraphernalia to the list of beach behaviors, like feeding the seagulls, that are best avoided. Both can end up attracting a whole load of shit! And in Cape May in the summertime, there’s few things more disappointing than a sour end to a
beautiful beach day. Sometimes, it’s the little things. Okay, a LOT of times, it’s the little things. It’s Monday night and I just got back from sitting in my back yard, nursing a Manhattan (thanks to Nauti bartender, and my neighbor, Matt Reeves, I’ve changed my bourbon-vermouth mix from 3-1 to something closer to 2-2, but you HAVE to use Antica vermouth). In the yard, I was treated to my own little dance of the fireflies. Coming from the cold, damp climate
³
of my Scottish homeland (though it’s been warmer and sunnier than Cape May recently!), I’m always fascinated by the way more exotic species I see here in Cape May. Things like eight-foot snakes in my backyard (love them), bald eagles and fireflies. As I sat on the grass, taking my break while my wonderful wife was interviewing my wonderful BF Victor Grasso for the next color issue of EZ, I saw maybe two dozen fireflies out in the yard, all hovering around me, illuminating their little yellowy butts. And then I saw one on a blade of grass and picked up that blade. Only to discover there were not one but two fireflies on that lil’ blade, making some lil’ baby fireflies. Just had to share — it was one of the more lovely 15 minutes of my life recently. A nice break from all of the (very many) construction challenges at Exit Zero Filling Station. Speaking of... I’m now changing up my best guess of an opening date to around July 11. Watch our Facebook page for more details. And say a little prayer for us... Happy Fourth of July, folks.

Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Jamie Saporito from The Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? Five years. Favorite drink to make? A cubano. It’s a Mexican beer over ice, mixed with soy sauce, worcestershire, tabasco and lime finished with a salted rim. I got hooked on them in Cabo! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When girls take unsatisfied selfies...just give me the camera, I’ll take it! Biggest tip ever? When Rich Zickerman brings me my favorite meals and treats.
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Summer Catch - ABV: 5.50% Citrusy and refreshing, notes of orange peel and tropical fruits dominate this Belgian-style Wheat Ale. Lightly dry-hopped with Citra and Amarillo hops to give it a noticeably American twist, this wheat ale is complex yet approachable.
Sunset Liquors Deep Sea Chardonnay - $20.99 Brilliant acidity and delicate oak notes offer pure citrus and a whisper of vanilla. Bright lemon, green apple, lychee and mango are all present in this refreshing style of Chardonnay. Pairs well with light appetizers and entrees.
Produce Report Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that sweet corn is in season. Did you know that corn in the US is the second biggest crop in the world followed by sugar cane in Brazil? And the US produces more corn than it does milk, soybeans, wheat, sugar cane, sugar beets and potatoes combined?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Hot Dog Tommy’s. It’s a literal hole-in-the-wall on Jackson, meaning you place your order street-side. The guy in the hot-dog hat: That’s owner Bruce Carlino, who took over the business from founder Tom Snyder. He works the register and exclaims, “Very generous customer here!” when you put a tip in the jar. The line: It’s famously, wrap-around-the-block long. But it moves faster than, er, ketchup out of a bottle with a large opening that takes you by surprise. The aggravation: Shout-out to the jerk in the Prius who laid on his horn on our way to lunch because we were giving pedestrians the right of way. For you, we borrow a line from the Beastie Boys: “You’re a fake wearin’ sucker whose gold got rusted / Cheaper than a hot dog with no mustard / You tried to steal my fresh and you got cold busted / Mustard, mustard, mustard.” The fun fact: Both Eminem and 50 Cent have rapped about hot dogs. The order: Two Buffalo Dogs with spicy buffalo sauce, onions and blue cheese; a Summer Shower Dog with mashed potatoes, bacon bits, sour cream and cheese; a Mexi Dog with salsa, cheese, onions and tortilla chips; and a Tornado Dog with mashed potatoes, chili, cheese, salsa, peppers and sour cream. Oh, and a Carrot Dog (yes, an a carrot on a bun), plus a Potato Tornado in a cup. The choice: We ordered the Bigger Bad Dogs, which are all beef and made of Black Angus meat. The other option is slightly smaller, and made of beef and pork. “I usually order the Leaner Wieners,” Katie said. Please, Katie, this is a family publication. The initial reaction: “Look at the size of that one!” said Colleen, which sparked a few more innuendos not fit for print. The payment: Hot Dog Tommy’s accepts cash or your first born, according to a sign in their window. While you ponder whether to part with your child or your, ahem, Jacksons on Jackson, enjoy the musical stylings of Jimmy Buffet. (“Fins” was playing while we waited our turn.) The consensus: Let’s be frank. The dogs here taste like summer in a soft deli bun.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
W
e didn’t want LeBron anyway... I really should have sipped through that bottle of wine AFTER writing this column. You probably can’t tell, but I’m squinting real hard right now and my autocorrect is pretty mad at me. Apology of the Week: To Victoria Defrancisco for misspelling her name. Victoria and “Yeah Franky!” Mikulak were part of a fun karaoke night Friday at Rio Station. It’s taken a while, but it feels like summer has finally kicked in. And now I’m ready for September… It’s always nice to see my friends Bill Hofer and Janice Franks (aka Princess Ginger) at the Rio. They invited me to join them at some political protest on Saturday. I respectfully declined. Had a good gig with Tim Joyce on Saturday at Secondo, the (duh) second restaurant opened by the people behind Panico’s in the old Blue Claw. The patio is our new Saturday night home and we’d love your help in establishing this spot as a Saturday alternative to
the summer hustle and bustle of Cape May proper. And to put money in our tip jar. Saturday was the third night I got to hang out with my Karaoke Homies, Mike and Pam DelFranco, from Edison, NJ. There were some drinks, some songs and lots of laughs. Mike is a member of THREE a cappella doo-wop groups. And Pam has won so many national karaoke championships that they changed the rules to make it harder for her to win. She’s the Wilt Chamberlain of karaoke. There was a family from Jackson, NJ having a cocktail while they waited for their
inside table. I asked them if they ever saw any commercials for Davis Hyundai in Ewing that featured a short, fat, bald Danny DeVito type, which they had... Bartender Young Mike won himself a few fans assisting me with Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” Ah, I remember being young and thin with a full head of hair. Well, I remember being young and thin. Okay, I remember being young. Sort of. After the gig I had a post-show martini with Mike and Pam where I finally recognized Kevin Scullion after about a five-minute conversation about the Phillies game (Vince Velasquez is now Aaron Rowand-level). Kevin is the brother of my third favorite groupie, Kathleen Scullion and, as much as he hates being recognized for it, an excellent ER nurse at Cape Regional Medical Center. He gave me some real good drugs a few years back and I finally got to thank him for it. Tuesday was an epic karaoke day at Carney’s, where I’ll be every Tuesday for the remainder of the season. We started with a family and kids’ show, 530-830, where about

a dozen kids (and a few parents) got to sing their favorite songs. The best part? NONE of them was “Let It Go.” Though it looks like Moana is going to be a big seller this year, which is just fine. I went to cordless microphones about a year ago for several reasons. Among them was the fact that nervous kids have a habit of twisting the microphone around in their hands, knotting up the cables and damaging the internal hardware. Well I’ve fixed that. Now they screw the top or bottom off of the wireless mics. #ProblemSolver. The night show brought the usual degree of Carney’s Karaoke Madness. The Judges, Liam Lastnameunknown, Curtis Dodd and Chris Bezaire took full advantage of their salary (open bar tab during the contest) and we had a really amazing group of singers, with even a few of my Rio Station regulars making the trek south to participate. In the end, Pam DelFranco walked away with first place in a very tightly contested battle, with the three top spots separated by three points. Chris Bezaire did a nice job as the sort-of captain of the judges, Chris is also quite the successful real estate agent at Coldwell Banker, has a couple of great kids, and many, many other nice things that he’ll hopefully remember I said when he has extra 76ers tickets. Tom McKeefery manned the west side bar, while Dagmarra Baracka and Bones (just Bones) handled the east side. It was my first time working with these two, and only my second time ever at Carney’s, but they run a pretty tight ship over there. And Bones and Dagmarra are as nice as they come. Another 10 weeks with me should fix that. Somewhere in there we had a family lunch at Cappelletti’s on Texas Avenue. Lunch was, as usual, hit and tasty. And owner and founder Dan Cappelletti happened upon us and, amazingly, did not know who I was. He proceeded to give my kids a pep talk about staying in school, studying hard and pursuing their
July 5, 2018 dreams. By the end I was ready to run through a brick wall for him. Controversial Statement of the Week: The last episode of New Girl was the worst episode of New Girl. Fight me. REM Song of the Week: “Aftermath” from Around the Sun. I have so much penance to do for giving up on them in 1995. On a related note, if you enjoy comedy and REM as much as I do, check out the podcast “Are You Talking REM. Re: Me,” an album-byalbum retrospective on the greatest rock band America ever produced hosted by Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation) and Scott Aukerman (Mr Show with Bob & David). Very funny, very informative. Speaking of incredibly funny podcasts, The Undertow Podcast goes back into production this week. Possibly even while you’re reading this column. We took a few weeks off so Chris Nagle could baby-proof his penis and Kevin Ebner could make a short film (I’m not jealous), but we’ll be jumping back in with both feet on this, and the Talking Arts with Cape May Stage show we tragically lost to a digital grave last month. www.theundertownetwork.com. And I suppose I should tell you that The Undertow Players and our show, Downton Stabbey, are taking a summer hiatus from Iron Pier Craft House. We fully expect to return in the fall. With possibly a second show in our pockets. We’ll let you know. To support these and other upcoming projects from The Undertow Network, visit Patreon.com/terryoke1 and throw in a buck a month. That’s less than the cost of a cup of coffe and WON’T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN! Lastly this week, while I fully support the right of every qualified American to exercise their Second Amendment rights, if your first thought is to exercise it on a defenseless human being, go ahead and exercise it on yourself first, save us all a lot of trouble. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Blanca and Laura Nieto who are students from San Diego, CA and are spending the day walking around town. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? D. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
will never forget the day that Cape May almost won the World Cup. That was when America held a mini qualifying tourney, in which any town could field a team, and the winner of the “American World Cup” would progress to the lesser but still entertaining World Cup. We had ended top of our group, which included WildWood, Ocean City and Philly, having won all our games and scored 398 goals, all but three against Wildwood. In fairness, the Wildwood team was made up of Irishmen, who were under the impression they were attending the Riverdancing World Championships, and cut a tragic sight, in a circle in their own half, jigging for 90 minutes. In those days it was a real game, played by burly men and women, along with any other bipedal mammal that could fit into a team strip and kick a ball. The ball in question was made from solid leather, studded with metal tacks, and weighed 50lbs. The lesser World Cup was held in Berlin that year, and I remember as we trotted out, adjusting our calf-length shorts, to waves
of applause (the Cape May strip was an eye-catching vivid scarlet), the host nation’s strange little leader up in a box, all wildeyed and with that odd little mustache that for a time was in vogue. I recall he was not best pleased by our team, which consisted of myself, the Aaronovitch triplets, Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Oscar Wilde and that traveling gay gypsy acrobat troupe. In the final, it was us versus Adolf’s team, a strapping body of handsome blond fellows whose shorts were cut too small intentionally.
Well, the game was a nailbiter, I assure you, and when the final whistle blew, it was 10 goals each. When the penalty kicks were taken (the rules were rather different then), neither side could score (their goalkeeper was a marvel of speed and agility. Ours was Ygor the dancing bear, whose ample rear filled the net) and so it came down to the infamous sudden death penalty kick. I lined up for the shot and saw, behind the goal to the right, little Adolf, haranguing the keeper, telling him what way to dive, based on his own infallible reading of my style (he did not know that I lipread in German. I don’t speak the language at all, which is even stranger). In that moment, I knew I had the perfect opportunity to score and bring the cup home. But I also had taken a dislike to the little chap, and on a hunch, when I shot, instead of the goal, I sent the ball to thwack off Adolf’s head. Sadly, he survived, but was never quite the same again, and it was thanks to me that the lingering brain damage led to his poor choices that lost him the war. This is another Cape May True Story.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Independence Day bike parade
ourth of July will be over by the time some of you pick up this edition of Exit Zero, but there’s still time to celebrate America in Cape May. Join the Independence Day bike parade on Saturday, July 7 at 1:00pm. Cape May lovers sometimes quibble over when to celebrate our independence, especially when the holiday falls on a Wednesday. Never fear — quibbling over the date is a tradition as old as America herself. John Adams hoped people would celebrate on July 2, the date on which 12 of the 13 colonies agreed to separate from Great Britain. (New York abstained.) The text of the Declaration was finalized on July 4. The city of Philadelphia celebrated on July 8, and George Washington shared the news with his army on July 9. That painting of the signers that decorated all of our high school textbooks? Fiction. According to historians, no complete gathering of delegates to the Continental Congress took place. Most of the delegates signed a clean copy of the Declaration of Independence on August 2 and London got the word
on August 10. Had Adams foreseen his poetic passing on July 4, 1826, on the same day that Thomas Jefferson died, he might not have argued about the date. Coincidentally, James Monroe also passed away on July 4, in 1831. Only one President, Calvin Coolidge, was born on the Fourth of July, in 1872. The rest of us are happy to celebrate as Adams suggested, with “Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other” and “pomp and parade.” You can join Cape May’s Independence Parade by decorating your bicycle or your kid’s and following the crowd along Beach Ave-
nue. Don’t stress because you’re just learning about this — keep the decorations simple. Focus your energy on decorating the human and the helmet. Don’t try to match those who have been planning this for a year, and don’t rush out to buy decorations you’ll never use again. Instead, look around, and maybe pick up a roll of painter’s tape at Swain’s. Cut up yesterday’s (rinsed) red cups to make streamers for the handlebars, or use glossy red, white and blue ads from the newspaper. Make a handlebar bow tie from a bandana or yesterday’s tablecloth. Pipe cleaners work great. Let the kids do the bulk of the work, but make sure nothing interferes with the bike’s operations. Take lots of pictures, because though you’ll all be sweaty and cranky, you’re going to have fun. After the parade, hit the beach to cool off and enjoy one of the 150 million hot dogs Americans will eat over the holiday. In the evening, pay tribute to James Madison with a big scoop of ice cream, and relax at a concert of patriotic music at Rotary Park at 7. Bring your own chair.

The Movie Column
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Coco”
L
et’s talk about character chemistry, that certain spark between actors that makes movie magic when done right. Hearts Beat Loud features Nick Offerman of television’s Parks and Recreation fame. In this film, he plays Frank, an unconventional dad trying to convince his daughter, Sam, to take a year off before starting college to play in a band with him. Why is Frank pushing for Sam to postpone college? Could it be he just lost his lease on the record store he’s built over 17 years. Could it be he wants to revisit his youth when he tried to make music professionally? Yeah... definitely maybe. Sam is expertly played by rising star Kiersey Clemons, who has equal talent as musician, singer and actress. One night in their apartment (a makeshift studio), they produce a really tight tune called “Hearts Beat Loud.” Frank loves the song and tells Sam that “their new band” should make more songs. Sam says, “Dad, we’re not a band.” Frank thinks for a second and says, “That would be a great name for a band!”
Enjoy the chemistry in Hearts Beat Loud That night, “Hearts Beat Loud” by We’re Not a Band is published on Spotify in the indie category. And the song is a hit! When Spotify randomly plays the song at a coffee shop, Frank can’t help but loudly tell all the other patrons that it’s their song. Frank and Sam live alone — and only very briefly and sadly speak of Sam’s mother. There are family dynamics, unrealized dreams and other themes woven very subtly and beauti-
fully. Will Sam take a year off? The film stars a host of favorites. Oscar-nominated Toni Collette plays Frank’s landlord and (complicated) love interest. Multiple Golden Globe and Emmy-winning TV icon Ted Danson plays Dave, a bar owner who offers free advice and maybe a shot or two of mystery liquor. And multiple Emmy winner Blythe Danner, a Philly gal who is quickly becoming a beloved time-honored actress, plays Frank’s mother. The film reminds me of other great movies where music takes center stage like Once (2006) and Sing Street (2016). But here the music plays backup to the connected performance between Offerman and Clemons. Their chemistry as father and daughter is as much an overwhelming delight to watch as their songs are to hear. What does it make me think of? Well… my own beautiful daughters of course. So this one goes out to my Aly and Julia. They wanted to see this one together (with Sean, Aly’s great guy and my Jacquie). This was definitely a good one to catch together.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a friend whom I like very much. When I am with him or see him out with others, I have noticed that he is always kind and then I get home and see his Facebook page and I cannot believe it is the same person. Constant rants that are politically charged and intentionally inciteful. I don’t want to see these anymore because I want to keep the friendship. I know I can defriend him, but do not want to. Is there a fix for this? — Navigating Friendship Dear Navigating There is a button under Settings where you can Take A Break from your friend but not Block him or Unfriend him. The Answer Lady applauds you for wanting to keep the friendship but untether yourself from the
Wise answers to perplexing questions
vitriol. It is important to remember that we must try to find common ground and not fence ourselves in. Navigating the Facebook waters is tough for people of all ages. Pat yourself on the back by popping out to Harpoon’s by the Bay. Enjoy a lovely dinner while watching the sunset over the bay. Dear Answer Lady I made the mistake the other day of saying hello to my neighbor’s son — and by son I mean like a 70-year-old man. I asked him why he was packing his bags to
leave town when the holiday weekend was starting (my second mistake). He said, “I want to get out town before the crowds come. I hate these people and wish they would stay away.” To which I responded, “I have a business here and I’d be bankrupt if they stayed away.” To which he responded, “Then keep them on your side of the street.” I shot back, “I will,” and drove away. I despise that attitude and wonder what these people think their modest homes would be worth in an area that was not located by the sea. What would you do in that situation? — PR Nightmare Dear Nightmare There is no fix for ignorance. Next time, a simple smile and a wave and keep moving. Granted, the crowds can be overwhelming but that does not diminish Cape May’s beauty and verve. But trying to explain that will never end well. What you need is to go to Harry’s at the Montreal. Sit out on the deck, watch the ocean and have a cocktail. Use this an excuse for a zen positive moment and forget about the negative.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hat aggrieves you most on a trip through July woodlands is not the heat or biting insects, but the silence. This late in the breeding season, birds find no reason for song. All territory establishment is done, all the courtin’ over, at least with species that raise just a single brood a year. Yes, summer has just begun but birds keep a different calendar. Clock chimes solstice, birds call it quits. Literally, some even begin migrating south in late July. I once visited Great Slave Lake, Canada in late July and was astonished by the number of northern warblers already gathered. Yellows, yellow-rumpeds and even orange-crowneds, all heading south. Summer is short in the Arctic and birds in the know, know when it’s time to quit. Those first yellow warblers will be passing through Cape May through July. But you are thinking, the northern cardinal in my yard is still singing up a storm. Yes it is — cardinals may initiate a nesting cycle up to seven times in a season. No hardship for the male, perhaps, but an imposition on females
m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s
who get stuck with nest-building duties. Why so many nesting efforts? Ups the odds. Nest failure among cardinals is very high. It’s a great nesting strategy if you are a prairie bird, like cowbird, specialized to follow the bison herd. After the Eastern deciduous forests were felled and bison numbers dwindled, cowbirds moved east where they discovered a whole host of surrogate parents oblivious to the cowbird’s tactics. Some birds are more prone to the cowbird’s egg dumping tactics than others. Cardinal is
one. Another is wood thrush, whose population has declined by 50% since my childhood and continues to fall at a rate of 2% per year. Can something be done to save wood thrush? Yes, Invasive plant species control, like that conducted by New Jersey Audubon will help. So does your willingness to keep cats indoors and your embrace of woodlands with a healthy natural understory. Do not in the name of tidiness, clear out understory trees like dogwood and black cherry. This is the wood thrush’s ecological zone. No understory, no nesting wood thrush or cardinal or catbird or brown thrasher. It used to be said: “if you can smell your neighbors wood smoke, it’s time to move.” Today’s mantra might be: “if you can see your neighbor’s property line, it’s time to put the chain saw away. Birds like clutter and if you like birds so should you. A cleared understory is a sterile environment. Cooked by the sun and easily penetrated by cowbirds and predatory birds. Keep your property natural and in season the birds will reward you with song.

MAXWELL is a well mannered senior gentleman who arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer care for him. He is comfortable wandering around the yard or going for a leisurely walk. Maxwell is looking for a quiet household where he will be loved. His soft brown eyes will capture your heart as you pass by his kennel. Adopt!
MIKA arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer care for him. Although he lived with children, he would thrive as the only pet in the household. His infectious smile and outlook on life would make him a perfect companion for owners who are looking for a mature dog with plenty of eagerness for activity. Adopt Mika today!
ROXY is extremely affectionate and playful. She enjoys taking walks and plays ball in the yard like a champion. She is very well mannered and calm when she visits the homes of volunteers. Roxy lived with a foster family after her owner died, but they could not keep her. She had great house manners and loved sleeping in the bed and snuggling with them.
