Cape May Guard Wins Again! Rob Moran of Cape May Beach Patrol took first place at the 37th Annual SuperAthlon on July 2. This was the second time Moran took first after winning back in 2016. The idea of a SuperAthalon lifeguard competition was born when Buzz Mogck assumed the leadership of the Cape May Beach Patrol in 1981 and sought to stage a unique competition involving South Jersey beach patrols. The competition consisted of a 2.3 mile run, a 1.5 mile row and a 1/4 mile swim. The Rusty Nail hosted the after-party.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Why do we call this month July? It owes its name to the Roman Senate, who titled it after their general, Julius Caesar, born this month. July is also the month when zip codes were introduced for US mail (in 1963) and Sony introduced the walkman (1979).

On The Wild Side

Local Landmark

The late Andrew Wyeth, among the bestknown artists of the 20th century and someone who has frequently been referenced in the Peanuts strip, came to Cape May in the early 90s. One of his paintings, a lifeboat and a nun, is titled “Cape May.”

Seaweed gets a bad rap — no one wants to feel something slimy brush against their legs in the water. But did you know this algae is needed to make everything from toothpaste to ice cream? It also provides 70 percent of the world’s oxygen!

Cape May was recently named by National Geographic among the top 10 birding destinations in the world, so it makes sense we’d have a world-class destination for all things birding. The Cape May Bird Observatory on East Lake Drive in the Point offers a range of binoculars and spotting scopes, clothing, books and more. While you’re here, pick up a copy of CMBO’s quarterly events schedule, featuring everything from easy-going nature strolls to intensive workshops.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 18. Two men play five games of checkers in Rotary Park. Each man wins the same number of games. There are no ties. How is this so?

Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Kristen Heiler from the Cape May VFW Post 386 is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to make? A cosmo. I enjoy drinking cosmos, so I make them just how i like them, and my customers are always happy. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When I ask a customer what they want to drink and they tell me “I’ll have a beer.” Okay, what beer would that be? Biggest tip ever? $400 from one customer.

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co The Bog - ABV: 3.90% What happens when you make a cranberry wheat and accidentally add too much cranberry? Embrace it and turn it into a shandy! A tart cranberry wheat beer blended with lemonade, The Bog is light and refreshing while still packing tons of flavor.

Collier’s Liquor Store Castellroig Dry Rose - $13.99 A beautiful strawberry red. Red fruit aromas (strawberry and cranberry). Structured and full bodied. Fruitiness comes through in the mouth. Wellbalanced and persistent wine. Pairs with salads, pasta, rice dishes, as well as white and red grilled meat.

Produce Report Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that cucumbers are in season. Did you know that cucumbers can cool the blood, get rid of bad breath, cure a hangover, curb your appetite, relieve stress, give you energy and even erase ink marks? Who knew cucumbers were such a big dill?

Where We’re Eating

Here’s what the EZ team had for breakfast this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The spot: George’s Place on Beach Avenue. You may have seen it on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. It’s an iconic part of the Kara Restaurant Group, which also owns The YB, Michael Kara Catering and Shamone. The black eye: That belongs to Colleen, who accidentally walked into a light fixture this week, hence the sunglasses at the table. Question her about it, and she’ll tell you Jack gifted her with it when she asked when the Exit Zero Filling Station will FINALLY be open. Badum ching! The debate: Is the word “glamourpuss” A) an offensive thing to call a woman, B) a bit of innocuous 1950s lexicon used to describe an unusually attractive woman or C) the name of Katie’s cat? The answer, according to Diane, is A. The answer, according to Jack, is B. And the name of Katie’s cat is Stevie, after Stevie Wonder, because she shakes her head in a similar fashion. The server: Debbie, future corrections officer. Selfishly, we hope she changes her mind about that and keeps waiting tables forever because she makes dining at George’s a delightful experience. The other debate: Is addressing a group of female acquaintances with the colloquial greeting of “Hi, guys!” A) annoying — they aren’t guys, after all! B) totally fine, or C) wait, there’s actually a debate about this?! The answer, according to Katie, is A. The answer, according to Diane, is B. And the answer, according to Jack, is C. The food: A white veggie wrap for Colleen. Her order was swiftly reimagined by Jack, who enjoys breaking into extemporaneous rhyme, as a white veggie “rap.” Diane ordered the oatmeal with blueberries and brown sugar. Katie got the salmon scramble (which she says was “great, and I don’t usually even like scrambled eggs”), and Jack went for the quesadillas. Our hash brown side was so beautiful, it looked like a glamourpuss. No? Using that wrong? The consensus: George’s is a great choice, but ONLY if you’re looking for a tasty meal by the beach with perfect service and a nice vibe. Otherwise, stay away!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

irst, we have to talk about Carney’s. I’m their karaoke host this summer and we’ve been running a great kids and family show on Tuesdays, 5:308:30, so stop over if you’ve got some little ones that like to belt them out. There was some serious young talent on display this week (and sorry for forgetting to mention you last week, Kesami Hitaffer) and amid the classic rock, Beatles and 80s glam, it appeared a new kid’s song of the summer might be emerging — “That’s How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Could it be? Could my first season back as a kids karaoke host since 2014 be freed from the curse of Frozen…? No. “Let it Go”, goddamned “Let It Go” reared its ugly head and dominated the last hour of the show. GAH! Parents, please! Get them another DVD! Any DVD! Why does no one ever think of the poor karaoke host!?! WHY!?! Okay, I jest. Any kid is welcome to sing whatever song they want. I’ve just got a little Frozen PTSD, which is easily treatable by

using my adult brain to think of something else for that four minutes and 32 seconds — but who’s counting? Prior to the show it was fun to hear Joe Carney and Richard Crossley exchange some good-natured banter over the World Cup. Is the one month every four years Americans pretend to care about soccer almost over yet? After the kids’ show I took a bit of a breather before starting the night show because BAHGAWD! Tuesday nights at Carney’s are an absolute zoo. (The good kind of zoo. Like a petting zoo. Wait, let me rephrase

that…) The big Tuesday night karaoke contest has brought it not only many outstanding singers, but many people in general. This past week might be the busiest karaoke night I’ve hosted, with both bars packed, barely any room to stand, and over 30 singers in the queue (ALL of whom want to be next…) Uncle Bob, Cousin Ray and Kathleen Scullion (my third favorite stalker) were our judges for the evening. Might seem like an easy gig, but when there are 15 really talented singers every week it takes some actual judging. Just ask one of last week’s judges, the handsome and charming Chris Bezaire (I’m still angling for those 76ers tickets). Except for one incessant mic-dropper who shall remain nameless and songless for about a month, everyone was pretty well behaved. FYI: I’m always looking for judges so if you’re into it hit me up on the Facebook. The rest of this column is going to be sad, so if you don’t want your good mood spoiled, now might be a good time to dip out. Last Monday was one of the hardest days of my life. My youngest son Henry and I had

just come out of the Texas Avenue Wawa with road trip supplies (Cokes and Doritos) when my phone buzzed. A missed call from brother Mike. We were about to hit the road to pick up Cathrine, who was visiting her mother, so I figured I’d call back from the highway. Owen was at work, Jackson was dancing at Disney. And I had a four-hour window to make this three-hour round trip before my gig. Mike usually calls to talk about music, get answers to trivia questions, or brag about how well his Netflix stock is doing. This was not that. “Hey Mike, what’s up?” “Are you at home?” “No, on the road for the next few hours.” “Well, I hate to tell you this while you’re driving…” A deep breath. “Go ahead.” A pause. “Our brother Greg is dead.” And everything changed. My brother Greg was something. He got all the looks, a full head of hair and forever maintained a 28-inch waist. He was an insanely gifted guitar player and vocalist, partial to a Peter Frampton-style Les Paul, black. He was also cursed with crippling stage fright, which made sharing these gifts excruciating. A highlight of my life remains New Year’s Eve 1999, Anglesea Pub, rocking in the new century with The O’Brien Bros Band. Greg was my childhood hero. He was the cool brother. The one with all the pretty girlfriends. The one with the framed rejection letters from his tryouts with the Phillies, Cubs and Royals. He taught me to hit like George Brett and wiggle my butt like Mike Schmidt. He was also the one who promised to take me to the ball game, so I’d hit the front stoop around four o’clock with my glove and cap. I’d start looking for him around five. At six, I’d start getting nervous we might hit traffic and miss the first pitch. At 6:30 I’d figure if he got here now we could make it by the third inning. At seven, I’d put the

July 12, 2018 game on the radio and if we left right now we could make it by the fifth. At eight, I’d figure out he wasn’t coming and sit there on the stoop with my glove and cap like a chump. Greg was good for about two of these per month. Maybe I should have known that these were signs of trouble, but at 10-12 years old all you want to do is hang out with the coolest guy you know. If I’m being honest, this was part of his mystique, his not being there, his dropping in and out of my life like a storm of laughter. My other siblings? Mike, Chris, Dan and Erin? They were boring, They were always there. Greg, he was the cool one. The others were The Avengers, but Greg was Tony Stark. Greg was also an alcoholic. And though the circumstances surrounding his death are murky at this time, whatever the official cause ends up being, it was the booze that killed him. Greg O’Brien was one of the sweetest souls to ever walk this earth. He often joked that he last uttered a serious word sometime around 1979 and damned if it wasn’t true. If he met you more than twice he had a nickname for you. (Mine was Terrax the Untamed, a Fantastic Four villain because I was a comic book nerd. Still am.) One of the great things in the world was to make him laugh. That laugh was love. So, last Monday was tough. I spoke with Henry about his uncle. We picked up Cath and told her on the way home (I didn’t want to ruin her visit), then I went to the Rusty Nail. I’m still not quite sure how I managed that gig with only one mini-breakdown (stupid Ed Sheeran), but I know I could not have done it without my wing man, Tim Joyce, getting my back. A good player, a better friend. Erin, Dan, Chris, Mike. I love you. Thank you for being there. Greg, you will be mssed. Greg O’Brien, 1961-2018. “Oh, won’t you show me the way?” ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Hannah Faulkner and Tori Speece who are from Cape May and are spending the day working at the Cape May Fish Market on Washington Street Mall. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Don Henley. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

watched that interesting televised documentary “The Purge” last night with my household staff, and I must say, I was very impressed indeed. I am not sure where it was made, but think perhaps from the high levels of squalor and carnage, that it might have been Philly, but was very impressed with the core idea, that once a year the citizens can go on a mad rampage and do as they please. Of course, we have that already, and know it as “A Friday night in Wildwood”. And I am not suggesting we do the same for Cape May: it took us a long time to clean up after that other exercise in anarchy, ie: The Irish, and the lesser plague “The Scots and Latvins”. And I will not go into detail about the events of the night some lunatic (it may well have been Chuck Darwin, who was always in town spouting his mad ideas to that odd friend of his, Nietzsche) let all of the inmates of the famed Cape May Sanatorium For Insane Apes free. Let me only say that in the end it took 3,000 bananas and the same weight in TNT to rid ourselves of the problem.

Cape May’s cultivated vibe of “anything goes” is in fact more carefully curated and policed behind the scenes that that other recent documentary Westworld. You may think that our crazy golf is the wildest thing in the world, but try and go back around the course the wrong way once finished, and you will feel our wroth. And Iron Pier might well seem to you to be the perfect place for one martini too many, but more than one rambunctious tippler has woken up on the beach, staked down in the path of the raking machine.

That is not to say we don’t appreciate the impulsive visitor: we absolutely do, and will chuckle at your wild destructive and uncouth japes even as we row you out to the Concrete Ship in the dead of night, with suitably made cement shoes on. Sometimes we even put the shoes on the opposite feet! Of course, we are ourselves a crazy bunch: why just the other day I asked for my usual coffee to be one of those wild “lattes” I keep hearing about from my junior staff and inbred younger relatives, and when it arrived, I did not sniff, gasp or hesitate: I downed the entire thing in one scalding milky gulp, as my family cheered and took notes in tiny notebooks. Of course, once I eventually managed to stop coughing up my lungs (nobody had deigned to tell me the beverage was hot), I laid about me with my indoor walking cane, and The D’Catur Mansion echoed with the pleasing whack of supple wicker on bare bottoms, and the high shriek of Trust Fund kids who have never had to work a day or been beaten savagely by a kindly uncle, in their lives.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, local art shows

vacation in Cape May offers opportunities to expand your skill set. Even in the height of summer, you can find quiet spaces to stretch your body and your mind. New artists set up their easels where they can make their mistakes in private. A novice fisherman releases a skate caught by mistake, with only other fishermen to see. People of all shapes and sizes stretch in relative isolation at the harbor, emulating the fit folk practicing yoga on paddleboards. Someone is learning to drive a stick shift on an inland road while someone else learns to ride a two-wheeler. Rocks are being skipped; kites are taking flight; sand castles are surviving invasions. Most challengingly, in crowded houses and hotels all over the island, families are learning to bite their tongues. Memories are being made. Capture those memories with a souvenir from the promenade art show. With the ocean at your back, you can peruse the work of a variety of artists and perhaps find a little bit of Cape May beauty

to bring home. Stroll the row of white tents and marvel at the variety. Bring your wallet. Dozens of artists offer everything — mosaics, jewelry, leather goods, oils, watercolors, mixed media, photographs, and things you never imagined. Find the gifts you’ve been searching for, and, of course, a little something for yourself. Here, a colorful print shows a vintage car loaded for a trip to the beach — the perfect thank-you for the friend who let you practice and never once mentioned the damage you might be doing to her clutch. There, a photograph of the empty Cove with the lighthouse

in the background will inspire your inner artist during the winter doldrums. Abstract fish commemorate the ones that got away. Creative head wraps bring a bit of beach to your hometown workout. Colorful earrings would be perfect for your sister’s birthday, and she’ll probably let you borrow them. You may find a depiction of your rental home or hotel. Although not every item relates directly to Cape May, most have some connection. If it’s not obvious, talk to the artist. The Promenade Art Show runs Friday, July 13 through Sunday, July 15, from 10-5 along the paved promenade in front of Convention Hall. The show runs rain or shine, and most artists are equipped to be there whatever the weather. Most will take credit cards, but it’s always good to have cash if you know you’re buying. Keep your kids in sight and teach them not to touch. Parking is a challenge, so take your bike. If you fall in love with a large item, you can arrange to come back with your car to pick it up. Some artists do custom work and will ship to your home.

Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “The Heart of Nuba”

S

ummer comic book flicks can make you feel good, but how many caped crusaders leave you feeling inspired? Let’s take a break from the blockbuster du jour for a movie about a hero with one extraordinary superpower — caring enough to heal. The Heart of Nuba takes you through an African region torn by war to witness one doctor’s struggle to mend it. The documentary feature-length film started on Hulu last week. I’m trying to bring it to the film festival next April! Dr Tom Catena is as unlikely a hero as you’d ever meet. A graduate and football star at Brown, he went to med school to become a doctor. If that was the end of his story, it would maybe make the local town paper. But Dr Tom’s “local town” is the Sudan, an expansive desert tract home to a fierce civil war. Their dictatorial leader cares more to bomb his own people and take their resources rather than lead peacefully. The Nuba people are vast in number and encompass a variety of cultures and lan-

The Heart of Nuba features a real superhero guages. They are also defenseless against ruthless tyrants who want to bomb their villages. There is one hospital among the people that tries to care for the wounded — one doctor treating thousands of patients. How did a graduate from the school of Rockefeller and Kennedy end up here? Maybe it was a calling, or maybe it was destiny. Or are those two (calling and destiny) tied together like runners in a three-legged race? The film starts with a day in the doctor’s life.

It begins with bombings and images of children cowering in ditches that can barely keep them out of harm’s way. And after the blasts and dust settles, the doctor’s work begins. Mother of Mercy Hospital is bare bones, and it is funded and supplied by the Catholic Church. If not for the hospital, you can see the region would be abandoned of healing or hope. Dr Tom is surgeon and advisor, specialist and GP — all at once. Primary care for sure with no frills, no insurance — and certainly no second opinions. The journey captured in this film spans only a few months — you won’t be sure if you can take much more. It will leave you with a feel for how desperate the conditions are in so many parts of the world — parts where angels (except those guarding one doctor and a handful of brave missionaries) fear to tread. Correction: Two weeks ago, I clumsily worded a quick review about The Incredibles 2 movie. What I meant to say was the hero’s powers may have been innovative but the storyline unfortunately was cliché. See a real hero — watch The Heart of Nuba instead.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I had a barbeque for some of my friends Fourth of July. Afterwards we sat on the porch and watched the fireworks. It was a really good time and the first time I ever had a party without my mother organizing and taking charge of it. I also did not invite my mother, because I wanted to do this myself without her interference. Now, I’m getting the cold shoulder. I’m a 23-year-old man — the cord has to be cut some time or I’m never going to find a partner who wants to share my life. MY life not hers. But I don’t want my mother mad at me either. Now, I feel guilty. — Cold Shouldered Dear Cold Shouldered As the Answer Lady’s daddy used to say, “If she’s mad; she’ll get glad again.” You are

Wise answers to perplexing questions

her son. But are her feelings hurt? Absolutely. And you can surely understand that. You took a U-turn in behavior. However, it sounds like a lot more is going on, other than one barbeque. It sounds like mom might be a bit overprotective and not ready to see you fly on your own. So, this barbeque was a big step for you and we applaud that. The Answer Lady suggests not bringing the subject up unless she broaches it. Instead, why not take her to dinner at George’s? Don’t react if she rebuffs the invitation. She’ll come around.

Dear Answer Lady My parents have decided to send me to a different school in the fall. I went to a private school my first six years and now will be going to Teitelman and am very nervous. I’ll have no friends there. What if no one likes me? I would like you to tell what is the best way to fit in. — Worried Dear Worried What the Answer Lady is about to tell you will sound clichéd. Nevertheless — the best way to “fit in” is to be yourself and not worry about fitting in. The truth is no one fits in but some people are good at surrounding themselves with people who make it appear as though they fit. Try very hard to turn what you are looking at as a negative into a positive. Think of your new school as a trip abroad. A chance to meet new people. You need a Zen night out at Sunset Beach. A round of miniature golf, then get a burger at The Grille Shop. Enjoy it while looking over at the sunset and share the moment with one of your friends. Remember, you have friends. Now you will have more.

Bird Droppings

A

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

s most people know the killing or capture of bird species not classified as “game birds” is illegal, their protection established and defined by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The impetus of the act was the wholesale slaughter of birds whose feathers fueled the fashion trade. What many people fail to realize is that this legislative action is largely responsible for the wealth of birds we know today. When people think of the fashion trade, their minds go to those Victorian ladies with plume-bearing headsets. Thousands of herons and egrets were slaughtered for their plumes, but the slaughter did not end there. Gulls, terns, shorebirds and even songbird species were caught up in the craze. The first piping plover I ever saw was the centerpiece for my Grandmother Dunne’s bonnet. A proper Victorian lady, she’d worn the piece during her years at a “finishing school” outside Washington. Here in New Jersey, snowy egrets, great egrets, tricolored herons, Forster’s terns and

piping plover were all extirpated. Now recovered, they are as nature would have it, part of our visual dowery, the feathered centerpieces of a healthy coastal ecosystem. So far did the greed for feathers extend that herring gulls were hunted to depletion on the Maine coast where their keening cry is once again iconic. And yes, birds continue to face challenges today. The wood thrush, whose flute-like notes waft through the forest, have declined by 40% since my youth in North Jersey and continue to decline at a rate of 2% per year.

The reasons are multiple and complex but as a species we have recognized our obligation as the planet’s custodians in the past and will so again. What Charles Darwin taught us was not that the fittest survive but that with a measure of intelligent accommodation, multiple species can co-exist. So when I think of species in decline, like wood thrush, piping plover and greater yellowlegs, I am brought to recall that 100 years ago, the only piping plovers to be found, resided atop fashion-minded debutantes, some of whom were the founders of the Audubon movement, after the plight of plume-bearing birds was brought to light. Yes, humans cause environmental problems but we solve them, too. The Migratory Bird Treaty gives us the legislative footing to keep us moving in the right direction. My money is on the wood thrush and greater yellowlegs whose southbound migration is ferrying birds through Cape May airspace as you read this line. Breeding in Canada, wintering in Surinam, Cape May is a critical link for greater yellowlegs, one of 800 protected in Canada and the US by treaty.

ROCKY is a stunning two year old blue pit/ cattle dog mix breed. He lived in a family with children and another dog and it is reported that he was well mannered and social. At the shelter, Rocky has warmed up quickly to staff and volunteers. He enjoys playing in the yard, relaxing in the training room and taking long walks. Adopt today!

ROONEY is a highly energetic young boy who loves to go for long, spirited walks. He is full of life and shows that by his enthusiastic attitude. Rooney prances in his kennel until harnessed and will just as willingly climb into your lap for a quick pet. He is very loving and affectionate. Stop by the shelter and meet this eager boy today!

MIKA arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer care for him. Although he lived with children, he would thrive as the only pet in the household. His infectious smile and outlook on life would make him a perfect companion for owners who are looking for a mature dog with plenty of eagerness for activity. Adopt Mika today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

REESE and her brother came to the shelter over a year ago. He was adopted right away but Reese is still searching for her new family... perhaps that could be you? Although she is a bit shy, Reese is sweet and likes other kitties too. She’s looking for a patient family to come and take her to her forever home. Stop by the shelter today!

CRUELLA is her name. But cruel she is not! She’s just a little cranky to be cooped up with all the other kitties. It’s just too crowded at the shelter for miss Cruella! She’s looking for a family and some space to call her own. Maybe a nice lap or comfy pillow to lay her head on. Could this be you?

NOLE was adopted as a kitten from here and a few years later they needed to bring him back. But Nole got lucky and another family member took him in. Now the tides have changed and he had to come back again. It has all been a bit stressful for poor Nole. He’s looking for a quiet home and a loyal family to call his own. Adopt today!
