What do you get when great cinematic entertainment meets a cool ocean breeze and starlit sky? Movies on the beach in Cape May! Every Thursday in July and August, bring your chair or blanket to the sandy stretch next to Convention Hall and maybe some popcorn and soda, and sit back and enjoy one of Cape May’s favorite traditions — kids’ activities begin at 8pm, and a film start promptly at 8:30pm.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Which song was named New Jersey’s unofficial youth rock album by New Jersey’s state legislature? That would be “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen. (Never mind that the song is about a desire to get out of town.) He wrote the lyrics in Long Branch, NJ in 1974.

«Call us on 609-770-8479 or email us at photo@exitzero.us. Either way, you need to tell us on which date the photo appeared, and on which page. Orders must be prepaid.

«Although we no longer offer subscriptions to the weekly issue, you can still subscribe to our three color issues. Call 609-770-8479 or visit ezstore.us. The cost is $25.

Donavon Frankenreiter performed at Cabanas in August, 2015, a show which benefited the deSatnick Foundation. Later, the singer drank a Blonde Ale from Cape May Brewing Company and called it “amazing.”

This week, Cape May Police Department found a suspicious character wandering the streets and posted his mug shot to social media. Make that pug shot. The missing pug, named Bean, was reunited with his owner shortly thereafter.

The red buoy next to the promenade on Beach Avenue at the end of Gurney Street marks the southernmost point in Cape May, aka the southernmost point in New Jersey. The structure — an excellent photo op — is reminiscent of the buoy marking the southernmost point in the continental US. That one’s in Key West, considered Cape May’s sister town both because of its similar vibe and all the Cape May locals who vacation there.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 18. Two men had lunch at Lucky Bones and order iced teas to drink. One man had five while the other man had only one. All of the drinks were poisoned. The man that had only one drink died but the man that had five drinks survived. How can that be?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: The Coffee Shop at The Lobster House on the harbor. While The Lobster House’s main dining room is an institution, the Coffee Shop is a little less well-known. Okay, a LOT less well-known. The vibe: Think old-school, coastal New England diner. You won’t find any fork-pressed avocado toast or flower-petal muesli here. (We swear that’s a thing.) Just good, simple food — no pretense. The occasion: We were celebrating the opening of the Exit Zero Filling Station gas station. That’s right — we are up and pumping, folks! The rest of the operation (restaurant, convenience store) will be opening shortly. Come fill your tank and say hello to gastenders Gill and Adam — they’ll be, er, pumped to see you. The server: Sarah. She’s a local girl who’s waited tables in the 500seat Lobster House dining room as well, but she prefers The Coffee Shop, which she calls “the best-kept secret” on the island. “Customers often tell me they’ve been coming to Cape May for 10 years and they’ve just now discovered us,” Sarah said. “It’s more of a locals’ spot.” The conversation: Apparently, ordering eggs stresses Diane out. What’s the difference between fried and over-easy? Do cooks really make a distinction between over-easy and over-medium? Is there any way to get sunny-side-up sans goo? Is it pretentious to ask for poached? How many eggs make for a decent scrambled portion? These are obviously questions for the ages. Meanwhile, is Diane embarrassed by her shaky hold on egg lingo? We guess you could say she has, ahem, egg on her face. Badum ching! The juice: Orange. Fresh-pressed right in front of us! The other conversation: Swain’s Ace Hardware has been a godsend as we prepare to open Exit Zero Filling Station. We’re over there constantly for everything from paint to screws to paper towels, and the staff has been “so incredibly helpful and patient,” Colleen says. The food: Eggs all around! (Diane panic ordered over-easy. Or was it over-medium?) Katie got hers with grilled ham and Jack added salt mackerel. It was so good, we took a Canadian bacon sandwich to go. The consensus: Egg-cellent! (You knew it was coming.)

Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

M

y apologies if last week’s column was a bummer. I’ll try to get back to 25 paragraphs of relentless fart jokes this week. But, uh, if you could all go without dying for a week or two, that would be super. Had a pop-up, fill-in gig with Ten Eddy Drive last Saturday at The Deck in Wildwood. I was once again joined by co-lead vocalist Shannon Vail, who stole, like, 10 of my songs. (It’s okay, she sings them better.) Eddie Rodriguez and Mark Selig lay down a nice groove while Dr David Bee rips it up on guitar. And who comes strolling in but Cape May legend Dawn Ford to peacock around like Mick Jagger! Turns out Dawn works for Dr Bee and my if it isn’t a small world. Ten Eddy Drive is a fun party band looking to fill up Saturdays for the remainder of the summer, so if you’ve got a bar, a stage and a few open hours you could do worse. Which reminds me; I got a bit of a late start booking my 2018 since my last job waited until mid-January to fire me, so now seems as good a time as any to start talking

2019. I’m talking Beatles, Billy Joel and R.E.M. tribute bands, a kick-ass new party/ dance band (The Lifters), chill acoustic with TNT (me and Tim Joyce) and, of course, Terry O’ke. Talent like this waits for no man. A little birdie tells me the Exit Zero Filling Station will be opening THIS COMING MONDAY! I’ll be serving there a couple nights a week for some extra do-re-mi (as well as gathering material for this little column, so tip well…). Be sure to stop on in. Exit Zero Filling Station, EZ’s big project promises to bring all the cred and swag you’ve come to

expect from the hippest crew in town. And I get to be one of them again! Yay me! Apology of the Week: From me, to you, for saying “Yay me!” in the previous item. It’s possible I had soy milk on my cereal. Tuesday was another humdinger of a Terry O’ke show at Carney’s. Brian, Jess and a whole mess of Groetsches highlighted what was our busiest family karaoke show yet. (I know I kind-of know a bunch of others that were there, but I’m as good with names as I am at losing weight — not very.) And Brian, I didn’t mean to bum you out, but I had been thinking of you recently. Brothers are brothers, impossible to replace. The evening once again turned into a Roman-esque bacchanal as the sun went down and the freaks came out (the freaks always come out at night) and another rollicking karaoke contest unfolded. Four weeks in, we’ve had a nice mix of locals and shoobies take the stage, with heretofore unseen talent levels on the Carney’s karaoke stage. One of my oldest Cape May friends, Stephen Prince, made an appearance, but chose

not to perform his all-in rendition of “Love Shack.” To do that song you have to COMMIT to the Fred Schneider part, and Prince commits. Hard. Ryan Hickey was his wing man. I once made Ryan sing. In a Christmas show, IN GERMAN. Mein main man! And their boy Fitz made it into our top five. I forget what he sang but he probably forgets being there, so let’s call it a draw. My homies Frank Mikulak and Victoria DeFrancisco (I think) once again sat at the judge’s table, joined by 101.5 WCFA personality Andrew Fitzpatrick, who hosts the Funky Boogaloo on Thursday at 7:00. Carney’s Family & Kids’ Show is every Tuesday, 5:308:30. Contest night starts at 9:30. Hit me up on Facebook if you’d like to be a judge one of these weeks. Pay is by the pint. Friday was a fair-to-middlin’ karaoke night at Rio Station. Everybody knows what a great job Tami Marks does, but Tammy Gilchrist has been there long enough that it might be safe to write about her now. (Beware the Undertow Curse!) You can usually find Tammy displaying her goods on top of the bar… writing the new beer additions in chalk. (Get your minds out of the gutters.) She also pours one hell of a Miller Lite. Be sure to request she sing “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. It will move you to tears. The North Cape May McDonald’s (my favorite restaurant on Earth) recently underwent a massive facelift which included comfy new seating, a design update and, most confusingly, new ordering kiosks. Took me 20 minutes to figure it out the first time. (15 minutes the second.) Most satisfying? My know-everything 16-yearold, Owen, who, when offered assistance, grumbled, “I got it, dad. Jeez”, proceeded to order his large #3… and two cheeseburgers... and two six-piece nuggets. Accidentally. The idiot. Don’t worry, it all got eaten. I’m 85% psyched and 15% terrified to be playing the Beach

July 19, 2018 Shack at Rusty Nail on Monday with Walt Sapsai, Jr and Sue Polcer. Psyched because they’re ridiculously talented performers who have the good taste to be in my Beatles and Billy Joel bands. Terrified because we’ve never played together as a trio before. What could possibly go wrong? (Sue is in the North Jersey band Hoi Polloi, Walt is in 27 Cape May-area bands, including Tribe and The Villas People — best band name in the area by a mile.) I know very little about Atlanta, even less about hip-hop music, and absolutely nothing about the African-American millennial experience, but I utterly adore Atlanta, the FX show created by Donald Glover (Community, Solo). Thrilling, vibrant, exciting. The kind of stuff I want my company to eventually produce. Speaking of which... Episode #4 of The Undertow Podcast is up on The Undertow Network (theundertownetwork. com) if you’ve got an hour to kill. Co-host Chris Nagle (94.3 WIBG) and I chat about all the day’s most pressing topics, like popular kids karaoke songs, Avengers: Infinity War and Coke Zero. Riveting stuff. And each episode gets a little bit better. This one is almost listenable. To support The Undertow Network and our various musical/online/theatrical endeavors, please visit Patreon.com/ terryoke1 and toss in a buck a month if you can swing it. Every penny goes towards operating expenses and equipment. Aside from the aforementioned Tuesday and Friday karaoke nights, you can catch my acoustic act, TNT, at Cabanas (Friday, 4:00-7:30) and Beach Shack (Sunday, 4:30-8:30). Lastly, I’d like to offer a sincere thank you to the hundreds of you who’ve reached out the last two weeks via phone or social media to offer your condolences. My brother Greg was an amazing, troubled guy. Hopefully, in death, he can find the peace that eluded him in life. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Mike Gleeson, a Coldwell Banker Real Estate Agent from West Cape May who is on his way to work. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? Ronald Reagan. The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ssuming you are not one of those smug maroons who drives an electrically powered car, purring around town with the only noise being that of the air escaping from your over-inflated head, then you must visit the new Exit Zero gasoline pumping station. I made Smithers drive the Bentley along there the other week, and I was both pleased and alarmed to note that the pump attendant looked to be the very twin of the undeniably primal Scotchman who edits this very rag. My specially adapted Bentley (a 1930s beast of rare beauty) holds 300 gallons of fuel, so the Scotchman was pumping and sweating for a half hour, before declaring: “Help ma boabby! That’s a big wan!” I have no idea what he meant, but I tipped him anyway, for his rude charm and then had Kitchener drive around the corner, empty the tank into a ditch (fear not, ye conservatorationitalists, no animals or birds were harmed: we threw in a match) and go fill up again, this time with convincing yet false French accents, so the stout fellow would not

know it was us again. Why were we doing this? We are big believers in local businesses run by local “characters”. Also, I have a soft spot for gas stations where an attendant pumps for you, stemming from the time we decided to have all of Cape May’s gas stations staffed by apes. This was in part to bring employment to our burgeoning primate population (we welcomed all immigrants apes, following a slight confusion after we watched that excellent movie Planet of the Apes and we were convinced that monkeys

had founded the USA) as there was a bit of a primate ghetto situation happening over where they had settled in Stimpson Lane, with a burgeoning chimp mafia, and banana smuggling. So those nimble apes were given jobs pumping gas, cutting hair, herding Wildwooders out of the city after curfew, and so on. It all went well until the monkeys, using their newfound wealth to make their mark on the town’s cultural scene, encouraged the Beach Cinema to run King Kong and Mighty Joe Young back to back. That gave them ideas, and before we knew it there were chimps atop City Hall, orangutan motorcycle gangs and gangs of rogue bonobos stealing the hats of gents’ heads and leaving small heaps of steaming poo in place of the stolen chapeaus. Well, that led to Cape May’s infamous Primate Act of ’33, in which it was expressly forbidden for lower mammals to be allowed to smoke whilst pumping flammable liquid from a high pressure hose. I can’t think why that reminded me of the new gas station, but you really must pop along to Exit Zero Filling Station on Sunset Boulevard.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, supporting the Nature Center of Cape May

f the Cape May beach is summer’s movie star, the Cape May harbor is like the back lot, where a cast of thousands work. Here, you find hundreds of people catching fish — summer flounder, scallops, surf clams, lobster, monkfish and more — and processing the catch so that it lands on plates locally and internationally. Fishing is second only to tourism in Cape May’s economy. In these waters, sailors who now glide past the lighthouse in picture-perfect style once struggled and dipped as juniors, learning the ropes at Corinthian Yacht Club. Here, kayakers learn which end of a paddle is up. And here, at the Nature Center, hundreds of little kids learn to value the habitat that makes their vacation so much fun. What better place to celebrate the New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May? According to its mission statement, the Nature Center provides quality environmental education experiences, encourages stewardship of natural areas and promotes volunteerism as a rewarding means of community involvement and service. According

to me, it is a terrific place for adults and kids to learn about the flora and fauna with whom we share the beach. With a combination of formal programs and simple displays, the Nature Center offers a little or a lot, as you wish. Borrow their binoculars to see the ospreys return to their nest. Stroll through the gardens and learn the proper names of native plants. Take a kayak tour and explore the marsh. Meet a naturalist on the beach at night to spot ghost crabs. Maybe you’ll get to watch a snake eat its dinner — it may put you off yours, but you will remember it. The Nature Center is why my grown

children can tell a plover from a sandpiper, and say things like, “Purple sandpipers are gone, mom. It’s June;” and, “Don’t worry, it’s only a little skate.” Catch Of Cape May is an annual benefit to support the Nature Center. The event will be held this Saturday, July 21, from 6pm to 10pm at Harborview Park, on Harbor Lane and Texas Avenue in Cape May. The location offers, as the name suggests, an excellent view. The Catch offers live music, cocktails, a silent auction, dancing, and dining on local delicacies. Artist Sean Taylor will offer a piece for the auction, adding the finishing touches during the event. Tickets begin at $100 per person, and go up to $3,000 for a full-service table. Reservations are required, and space is limited, as this is a popular event for both summer visitors and year-round residents. Visit www. njaudubon.org/cocm or call 609-427-3045. Guests must be 21 and over. The event is eco-friendly, so they request that you walk, ride your bike or carpool. Next week: Queen Maysea

Mary Crawford reviews “Calliope Rose” at the Aerodrome

et in an isolated lighthouse, Calliope Rose, a nautical comedy, opens with lighthouse keeper Rose Walker incanting a midnight prayer to Greek gods as she seeks to guide lost mariners from the raging sea. Could one of the endangered seamen be her missing husband Jason? And is Rose saving them or drowning them? The play, being presented by the SPQR Stage Company at Aerodrome at the Cape May County Airport, tells the story of an offbeat family fractured by idealism and greed. Rose’s daughter, Tina, tired of enduring her mother’s “Hellenic mambo,” attempts to declare Rose incompetent in order to seize ownership of the lighthouse and establish a kitschy yet profitable mariner-themed amusement park. Meanwhile, government inspector Dexter Hacke, disguised as an innocuous painter, has landed on the barren island to investigate suspicious instances when the lighthouse has gone black. Finally, a tattered castaway washes ashore, engendering unwilling emotions in both mother and daughter.

This thought-provoking comedy was written and directed by Bill Sterritt, veteran of the Cape May, New York and Hollywood theater scenes. Sterritt’s witty dialogue starkly illuminates the conflict between the ancient ideals of beauty and honor versus the grubby materialism of the modern day. His tight buoyant directing serves the actors well as the play explores whether Rose will be found a worthy keeper of the light. Susan Tischler, well known to Cape May theatergoers, delivers a knockout performance as “Calliope” Rose Walker, keeper of the light and worshipper of Greek gods whose misanthropy and disdain towards the modern world is comically and compellingly expressed. Justine S. Harrison displays a

fierce intensity in her portrayal of scheming potty-mouthed Tina, yet also exhibits tender vulnerability in the presence of her perhaps long lost father. Tom Bryda, the handsome undercover inspector clothed in neon yellow hip waders, is convincingly persuasive as Rose converts him from repressed bureaucrat to ecstatic whale watcher. Sterritt, playing both the castaway and Jason, is weary and regretful as the paterfamilias whose grandiose ideals have crumbled into painful misgivings. The play is presented at the new Aerodrome Event Space at the Cape May County Airport. The ingenious set recreates the top of a lighthouse tower and the intimate seating guarantees that every seat in the house is a good one, allowing spectators to observe the actors’ artistry up close and personal. Performances are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday through August 21. Sunday performances are at 7pm and Monday and Tuesday performances are at 8pm. Admission is $20. For reservations and locations, call 323-7932153 or aerodromenj@aol.com.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I had a baby a month ago and am still recovering. My husband has moved into full-blown helpful mode — which is so sweet. The problem is I have a certain way of doing things. Most particularly loading the dishwasher efficiently. I have this down to science. Also putting the dishes in the cabinets so they all fit. I don’t say anything because it would sound so ungrateful, but it drives me insane. Sometimes I sneak into the kitchen after he turns the dishwasher on and rearrange it. I’m afraid he caught me the last time I know I really hurt his feelings. What if I stood sat in the kitchen while he was loading the dishwasher or putting the dishes back and tell him how to do it. Do you think that would wrong? — Neatnik

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Neatnik? Honey, you are a bit more than a neatnik. The Answer Lady is thinking compulsiveobsessive. Don’t you have more important things to worry about? Like a baby. LET IT GO. Allow your husband the joy of helping you. Focus your attention on the baby and this most wonderful time, and don’t negate it by obsessing on the minutiae. Try turn the tic in your brain off. Get a mani-pedi at Accents on Beauty, but try not to tell the manicurist how to do her job.

Dear Answer Lady I am invited to my cousin’s bridal shower and cannot attend. My mother says I still have to by a present. I don’t know why. I’m not going to it. I will be going to the wedding and will be buying a present for that. Isn’t that more important? I hate all this. If I ever get married, I’m eloping. — To Buy or Not To Buy Dear To Buy Of course you have to buy a present. The obligation is still there whether you attend or not. And the Answer Lady will see if you still want to elope when you do meet Mr or Ms Right. The thing to do is make buying the gift more a quest than a chore. Go off the registry reservation and look for something fun and memorable, rather than mundane. Something sexy? Try Lace Silhouettes. They have a number of lovely lingerie items to choose from. Or something handcrafted? Try the Whale’s Tale or their affiliate Splash. When the bride to be opens her gift she’ll remember you and the thoughtfulness that it took to think out of the registry box.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

I

woke this morning to fresh westerly winds, the chirp of crickets and silent woodlands. Autumn is upon us. Every day, the earth inclines deeper into its winter angle, a process that will stabilize at the Winter Solstice. Until then, all we denizens of spaceship earth can do is go along for the ride. And what a journey it is. Fall across most of the Northern Hemisphere is a protracted and thinly spread affair. Not here. Cape May is the fulcrum of autumn, a place where migrating birds and insects are geo-magnified. South Jersey is a big land funnel. Cape May is the constricted neck. Cape May Point the funnel’s terminus. Southbound migrants get caught in the funnel and are directed here for your viewing pleasure. Note, for example, the dragonflies, speeding down the beach, all heading in the same direction. Dragonflies migrate? Yes. As for birds, if you own a swimming pool, you’ll note increased numbers of these emerald bodied speedsters sipping water on the fly. Speaking of which, you can be grateful for the bird’s partiality to greenhead flies.

NEW!

Snapping up insects on the wing, swallows migrate during the day. Most other songbirds migrate at night. It’s cooler. You can’t see these nocturnal migrants but you can hear them. From late summer into November, the night sky over Cape May is a symphony of chips, lisps, sneezes and burps.” Different species have different nocturnal flight calls. At dawn, their struggling forms can be seen coming in off the water or heading north along the dunes at Higbee. Concentrated as they are, food is at a pre-

mium. This is why all natural habitat in Cape May becomes “critical habitat” during migration. Banding studies have shown that hawks that migrate through Cape May herald from the Yukon to Greenland. This celebrated and highly visible migration begins in late July as a trickle of migrating American kestrel, our smallest and jauntiest falcon, and continues into December with big wide-bodied Buteos like red-tailed and red-shouldered hawk. The Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park offers comfortable viewing. From here on, local birders with expertise to share can be counted upon to be on the platform any time the winds turn west to northwest. Bald eagles are migrating every month and your chances of seeing one are good. Eagles are soaring birds who like days with good thermal production and northerly winds ferry them to Cape May Point. Bring binoculars, high expectations, and if you want to rely upon local knowledge, consider attending a CMBO bird walk. Schedules available online at birdcapemay.org.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

KIRA is a young dog that has a happy outlook on life. Whether it is wandering around the yard or learning behavior cues, she craves positive feedback and becomes very excited when praised. Kira’s leash walking skills are impressive for such a young dog. She prances happily at your side and looks to see what the world will present to her. Adopt today!

SMOKEY is an exceptionally sweet and gentle old man who was left at the shelter when his owner passed away. He has very few demands beyond the simple requirement for food, love, and a comfortable place to sleep. He is about 14 years old and in good health except for some arthritis which slows him down. Adopt this sweet boy today!

MIKA arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer care for him. Although he lived with children, he would thrive as the only pet in the household. His infectious smile and outlook on life would make him a perfect companion for owners who are looking for a mature dog with plenty of eagerness for activity. Adopt Mika today!
