The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Which fictional character on AMC’s acclaimed series Mad Men is from Cape May? Betty Frances, played by January Jones, aka ex-wife of Don Draper (Jon Hamm). While her character grew up in a Philly suburb, her bio states that she originally hails from Exit 0.

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry isn’t just a way to cross the Delaware Bay in 80 scenic minutes before an afternoon of shopping in tax-free Rehoboth or sunbathing at, say, the Delaware Seashore State Park. The ferry is also an attraction in its own right. Drive, walk or bike onboard, enjoy quality pub food and a cocktail at the outdoor bar, and keep your eyes peeled for leaping dolphins. Ramblings From The Editor

A

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

decade of working on daily newspapers in the UK helped me develop a high tolerance for stress. When you’re given 15 minutes to take halfa-dozen different news reports of, say, a plane crash and rewrite them into one succinct piece for the next day’s front page, you tend not to frazzle easily. And so... When I was standing on the forecourt of the new Exit Zero Filling Station last week, wanting to grab the first horse I could see and ride out of Dodge and into the sunset, it wasn’t because I was being a wuss. It was because I’ve never had such a mental ass-kicking as the one I’ve been handed, pretty much every day, over the last few months. If someone suggests you should open a business that incorporates a publishing company, a restaurant, a convenience and merchandise store and a, um, gas station, you might want to take a minute before saying: YES! That’s for me! Regrets? I have none, I swear. Can’t wait to get this show on the road. But I could’ve wished for more good luck on our journey.

We started pumping gas a week past Saturday, even though the restaurant and store weren’t yet ready. After a few days, I decided to do our first Facebook post: “We’re pumping gas, folks!” Five minutes later, two things happened. The first was that we ran out of premium gasoline. The second was that ALL of the pumps suddenly shut down. This was the moment I wanted to ride off. As it turned out, the delivery company put the gasoline in a tank we couldn’t access. Something that had never happened before.

Hence the lack of premium gas. As for the shutdown? That was due to a problem with the grid. No electric means no gas pumps. It might not seem like much. But here’s a quick list of the slings and arrows that have come our way. Got a fancy neon light installed in our restaurant: a worker promptly broke it. Had a new point-of-sale computer stolen. Turns out it was a worker on the job (nabbed him, thanks to security cameras). New tile floor installed. Ice machine leaks, and new tiles pop up all over the place. The worst, wettest spring I can recall in 20 years of living in the US didn’t help. That led to serious construction delays. As did a severe lack of construction workers. All of this is to say... I’m really sorry that all the visitors who came here in June and July, looking to eat curries and buy EZ merch, were left disappointed. I’m bummed, too. So when are we opening the damn thing? I’ve stopped trying to guess a date. But... I’m thinking this coming Monday. (Smiley face.) Watch for news on Facebook.

SATURDAY, JULY 28 Santa will be visiting!

Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Charles Wise from the Washington Inn is up. How long have you been bartending? Eight years. Favorite drink to make? A paper airplane. I like to make it because it’s my favorite drink to drink. It’s made with bourbon, lemon juice, Aperol and Amaro. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer gets my attention but they aren’t ready to order their drink. Biggest tip ever? $200 from one customer.

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Devil’s Reach - ABV: 8.60% A Belgian beast, fruity and light, the complexity and character of Devil’s Reach comes from a robust Belgian yeast. Deceptively simple, caution is demanded because, before you know it, Devil’s Reach has swallowed you whole.

Collier’s Liquor Store Avalon California Cab - $11.99 Aromas of plum, cherry, boysenberry and a definite blueberry note with oaky nuances of caramel and cedar. This wine always drinks easy with luscious fruit flavors. Enjoy with red meat dishes or all by itself. Cheers!

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that peaches are in season. Did you know that peaches are known to reduce anxiety and are often referred to as the “fruit of calmness” and in some countries, peaches are the symbol of good luck, protection and longevity?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Saltwater Cafe at South Jersey Marina. We dined al fresco with a view of the boats and the salty breeze off the harbor. While we didn’t bring our mutts, the patio IS dog-friendly. The no-show: Katie bailed — BAILED! — on her colleagues, because she woke up late and is never hungry so early in the morning, anyway. Blasphemy! The menu: They’re printed on thick, possibly waterproof paper that feels oddly luxurious. Jack couldn’t stop caressing his copy. He needs to get out more. The server: TinaMarie. She has four kids so she’s obviously wellsuited for serving. Both parenting and waiting are, after all, physically and mentally demanding. Both are thankless. And both require coping with temper tantrums in public. Zing! The trivia: Since Saltwater Cafe is the spot of the week, let’s discuss, ahem, salt water. It was in the 16th century that physicians began prescribing a dip in the ocean as tonic for everything from fevers to depression. In the Victorian era, Cape May became popular not just for tourists, but sick patients seeking a cure. They were advised not just to swim, but to sweeten the salt water with honey and drink it. We’ll go on the record as recommending a Saltwater Cafe smoothie instead... The food: Seasonal berries for Diane. Avocado toast for Colleen. And a savory piggy for Jack. That’s a pulled pork dish made with BBQ sauce, cornbread, fried eggs and home fries. It’s served in a skillet which is, according to Jack, “super cute.” (And he’s a tough Scottish man. The only other things he typically describes that way are his dogs.) The whining: Diane complained that, since she works from home, people don’t actually think she works. Stop asking her for rides to the airport on Tuesday afternoon, people! (Unless you’re also going to invite her on vacation with you. In which case, Philly or JFK?) The soundtrack: Lapping water and the occasional gull. The consensus: Does salt water really have healing powers? We don’t know. But eating breakfast or lunch on the patio of the Saltwater Cafe will defo lift your spirits.

J

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

ust came from a meeting at the all-new Exit Zero Filling Station, led by that most gifted of public speakers, Jack Wright. Fifteen years I’ve known him, and I still only get about every third word with that accent. Regardless, the place is shaping up nicely. If you’re unaware, a bunch of local investors bought the gas station in West Cape May and built a new home for his publishing company, restaurant, gift shop and, um, gas station. Hence the moniker of Exit Zero Filling Station, where you can fill your tank, then go inside and have some curry and buy a T-shirt. “Eat Here, Get Gas.” I wish I’d thought of that. One side will be the restaurant, with its nifty, diner-ish breakfast bar and Indian-infused menu. The other will be a combo gift shop-convenience store, with top-end candies and exotic soda pops. The upper level will be full of ink-stained wretches. The plan is to open sometime between Monday and 2027. I was pretty excited about it because I was going to work a few server shifts there but now I can’t because Olivia

Zeitler, my arch enemy, is working there. That’d be like Darth Vader working with ObiWan, Batman working with Joker, Trump working with anyone slightly to the right of Karl Marx. Had a wonderful gig at Beach Shack last Monday. Every gig there is wonderful; there is no better setting in Cape May in which to perform and/or consume live acoustic music. But this one had a little extra juice as it was my first time trio-ing up with Wal Sapsai, Jr and Sue Polcer. We’ve been in my Billy Joel and Beatles tribute bands together the last

few years, but never before had we taken the stage together to play songs by more than one artist. Sure, we played our fair share of Beatles and Joel tunes, but Sue kicked ass on some Fleetwood Mac and Adele songs, while Walt tore up a wide array of classic rock tunes. Great music, great fun. Keep an eye out for our new dance/ party band, The Fukushima Contrails, which should debut this fall. Before that show I managed to get through 48 years, four months, nine days, 16 hours and 43 minutes without singing Brown Eyed Girl. This past Sunday my regular acoustic partner, Tim Joyce, returned from California. The Beach Shack was packed, as usual, as was our tip jar (Thanks!). Being my fourth gig in about 54 hours, the ol’ pipes gave up early on, but I was able to man up and power through (thank you, Mr Jameson). Lindsey Axelsson and most of her pants were there hassling me about not knowing any Kenny Chesney (don’t song shame me, Linz) and tell me how much she misses me (she tends bar at Elaine’s). I miss you, too! Giselle Suarez, not so much.

But you for sure! Mike and Judy Mann were there to listen, as they have been since the Mug in the 90s. And they still can’t believe Tim won’t learn that Squeeze song. (Neither can I, guys. Neither can I.) It was also the first time in about three weeks I got to see Wendy and Randy Redelico (Ding!). That’s way too long, guys. I was getting worried. Tuesdays at Carney’s have been pretty insane, though this past week, while still insane, was the least insane yet, but still insane. Follow? Lower Cape May Regional High School vice-principal Pete Daly was there to keep us from running in the hall, and also led a stellar panel of karaoke judges, which also included Kyle “K-Rod” Rodriguez, my Beach Shack soulmate/ bartender, and Mike Pittman, who used his perch atop the stage to accrue several dozen phone numbers. Wise man. They did a great job and Carney’s drew another deep pool of talented singers (though I’m still the best). Moms and dads, don’t forget family Karaoke at Carney’s, every Tuesday at 5:30. You can eat and drink, I’ll watch the kids and die a little inside every time they sing “Let it Go.” I told Carney’s server Kurt Seer (arch enemy: the handsome and talented Chris Bezaire) I would write something funny about him this week, but I can’t think of anything at the moment. Paige Golden (server) and Taylor Mahon (bartender) are also hard-working Carney’s employees, which is impossible because they were both 12 about five minutes ago. Meanwhile, my son Owen drives us to work every morning. If you could all knock it off, that’d be great. Saturday, Tim and I picked up a VERY last-minute gig at Secondo (phone rang at 4:45, gig was at 6) filling in for a weather cancellation. And man, did it rock. The bar at Secondo is not usually the kind of place known for raucous crowds and dirty dancing, but it was on Saturday. Easily a top five favorite gig this

July 26, 2018 season, spearheaded by a group of women wearing from Ohio, of all things, Cleveland Browns regalia. (Best T-Shirt: Undefeated 2017 Pre-Season Champions.) It was Gretchen’s 21st 29th birthday. She offered to buy me a drink, but I declined. They already gave us Carson Wentz. Angie Doughty, Jourdan Richardson and Mike Rohm worked the busy bar yet also managed to keep me hydrated (the most important aspect of their job) and Young Mike backed them up with aplomb. The food looked and smelled ah-mah-zing — congrats to the Panico’s group on what appears to be another successful endeavor. I love going to all my gigs and watching the Mets and Yankees games... Movie That Knows Exactly What It Is of the Week: Skyscraper. The Rock, a big building, a fire, some plot. Awesome. Dear Everybody on Facebook, I don’t care what movie came out 22 or 34 or 17 years ago this week. Episode 4 of The Undertow Podcast is up! Go to theundertownetwork.com to give it a listen (and click on “Archive” to hear episodes 1-3, as well as episode 1 of Talking Arts with Cape May Stage). While far from perfect, I think each episode gets a little bit better. My co-host, Chris Nagle (94.3 WIBG) makes it easy because he does so much stupid stuff for me to make fun of, a rare talent in a podcast partner. To support The Undertow Network and our various musical, theatrical and (eventually) film and television productions, visit Patreon.com/terryoke1 and pledge a buck if you have one. That’s all for this week. If you need a little live Terry in your life, come see me Friday (Rio Station, Terry O’ke, 9-12), Saturday (Cape May Distillery, 2-5; Secondo, 6-10), Monday (Beach Shack at Rusty Nail, 430-830) or Tuesday (Carney’s, Terry O’ke, 530-830 Kids, 930-130 Adults). ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Bob, a retiree from Pittsburgh, and his grandsons on their way to Dellas 5 & 10 on Washington Street Mall. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Jesus. The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

e have concluded a fascinating and complex experiument into global warming in the D’Catur Mansion’s basement laboratory. No easy task: I had to watch the tide come in and out several hundred times, a glass of single malt in one hand, a notebook in the other. Also, I confess that when we hosted the Tribute to the Top Scientists in the World conference last year, we took the liberty of borrowing some for a few months, by dint of slipping them a Mickey Finn and assisting them to sign their names on what they had for some reason assumed was an award acceptance slip, but was in fact a detailed and binding contract. I set them to work with a demand: “What does ‘climate change’ means for Cape May.” They agreed, on the condition I stop making air quote marks when I called it ‘climate change.’ They were given every scientist-type piece of equipment I could find, or could recall from my extensive movie watching (Cecil B. DeMille used to vacation in Cape May and stored his cellulose film in the basement of the Admiral

Hotel. It was during a whisky-and-cigar-night there to watch Cleopatra that a fistfight broke out over who Claudette Colbert may or may not have chosen to marry out of all of us, and a lit match put an end to the collection and the hotel. For the record, it was that boor Ernie Hemingway who started it.) So we had bubbling test tubes, sparking Van De Graaff generators and several large glass capsules that would fit a man and in theory transform him into an insect and/or teleport him to a faraway place. I think it was a combination of both:

when the mansion’s chimpanzee staff staged a strike (they refused to eat anything save for organic bananas and I insisted that banana loaf was both a sensible way to use up soft brown ones, and also very nutritional) and ran down to the basement lab, shouting (in “ooks” and “eeks”) that they were going to teleport to Wildwood for a few days of paid leave. All I found was an empty room, a smell of ozone, and a newspaper clipping about a plague of exceptionally large hairy flies in that town. Anyway, I digress. Finally, a delegation scientists (and a large fly) came to see me with a stack of notes as high as the ceiling. “I am a man of direct thought,” I cautioned them. “Not to be confused with low intelligence. Tell me in a few sentences how things will be in Cape May in a century if we do nothing.” There was much muttering then a bespectacled chap spoke. “Take a sheet of plain paper,” quoth he. “Now pick up that blue crayon on your desk.” I did just that. “Now color the entire sheet in.”

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, beauty pageants in Cape May

ature’s beauty surrounds you at the beach, and Cape May offers a couple of chances to show off your own beauty. Beauty pageants have long been associated with vacations, and “queens” have been selected for festivals for eons. In ancient China, the queen had to be so beautiful she made birds forget to fly. In Greece, beautiful men were rewarded with ribbons tied on their prettiest parts — you might sport a ribbon for the best bicep, but your neighbor might get the ribbon for the finest calf. Modern European beauty competitions are said to have begun in Scotland in 1839, when the Duchess of Somerset was named the Queen of Beauty. A glamorous, international beauty pageant was held in the resort town of Spa in 1888 — women wore gowns and men wore tuxedos. Marthe Soucaret was pronounced the beauty queen and presented with 5,000 French francs and a modeling contract. The prizes were less lucrative in 1921 when Atlantic City’s InterCity Beauty Contest — the precursor to

Miss America — was won by Miss Margaret Gorman, who earned $100 and a statue of a golden mermaid, which she had to return the next year. Beautiful babies had their own pageants, like one organized by P.T. Barnum in 1855, which attracted 143 contestants. Baby pageants led to Better Baby Contests, held at state fairs, where naked babies were evaluated like cattle in an odd attempt to teach parents how to care for their children. These events were edged out by the more popular — and less creepy — baby parades, including one in Asbury Park which drew 30,000

spectators. Fears of polio shut these events down for a few decades, until the 1960s, when the polio vaccine made it safe for children to gather. Cape May’s 86th Annual Baby Parade is scheduled for Friday, August 3 at 11am. The procession moves from Congress Street, down Beach Avenue to Howard Street. Prizes will be awarded in five categories: Pretty Baby, Decorated Baby Carriage, Children Walking in Fancy Dress, Children Walking in Comic Dress and Decorated on Wheels, Best Float and Best Overall Entry. For young misses (age 6 - 10 ) who are year-round residents of Cape May, there’s the Queen Maysea Coronation at 7pm on July 31 Convention Hall. For more information please call the Department of Civic Affairs at (609) 884-9565. Even the family dog can show off her beauty. Historic Cold Spring Village will hold its Annual Dog Show on Saturday, August 4 from 11-noon. Owners are, of course, responsible for dog behavior and clean up. One handler is admitted free.

Sally Galbraith reviews “Chapter Two” at Cape May Stage

irst impressions really do make a difference, and the set of Chapter Two at Cape May Stage is a stunning example. The set, designed by Leah Mazur, is a well-crafted introduction to an equally finely-honed production. Because the Shackleton Playhouse has no curtain, the audience sees the full stage as they enter. Split between two New York City apartments, one Upper East Side, one Central Park West, the set captures the contrasting world views of the two protagonists: dark/ light, masculine/feminine, grieving/hopeful. We see the two, recently widowed George Schneider and newly divorced Jenny Malone, in paired scenes that feature similar scenarios and contrasting attitudes. George and Jennie are two intelligent and talented people coping with their new aloneness. As George’s brother, Leo, observes, “Next to Christmas, loneliness is the biggest business in America.” The cast, with John Patrick Hayden as

novelist George Schneider, Michael Basile as his talent agent brother Roy, Alexis Bronkovic as actress Jenny Malone, and Lianne Marie Dobbs as her friend and sometime actress Faye Medwick, are fluid, attractive, and believable in their roles. We have the pleasure of watching two individuals start over, of watching them fall in love, while the supporting players have their own struggles with loneliness and love. Chapter Two centers on the story of George, who is still struggling to get over

the death of his first wife when he meets Jenny. After a cute meet involving confused phone numbers, a whirlwind romance ensues. How fast is too fast the second time around? George and Jenny are about to find out. This semi-autobiographical Neil Simon play premiered in 1977 and is dedicated to Marsha Mason, the actress who became Simon’s second wife. His first wife, dancer Joan Baim, died in 1973. In this production, directed by Roy Steinberg and with Amy Adams as stage manager, every detail, the period appropriate furnishings, costumes, props, and even music, the lighting and set design, and the snappy dialogue so skillfully delivered, contributes to a pleasurable theater experience. Chapter Two is touching, funny and wellacted. The play runs through August 3, with performances Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm and Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. Go see it. It will make you laugh, and, maybe, make you cry, but you will leave Cape May’s “little jewel box of a theater” with a smile.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have been living solo for quite a while and am okay with that. I had a bad marriage and did not want to get into another relationship. As luck would have it, I recently met someone at a friend’s party. He asked me out that night and I said, “yes,” without even thinking. We’ve been seeing each other for about a month and I feel I am falling for this guy, but I’m not sure he feels the same. It’s nothing I can put my finger on, he just seems rather distant sometimes and our dates are not as frequent as I would like. Truth be told, I would like to see him every day and if he doesn’t feel the same way, I think I would rather end it now rather than get in any deeper than I already am. What do you think, Answer Lady? — Falling

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Falling The Answer Lady understands your reservations — you don’t want to be hurt. BUT... give the guy a break. It’s only been one month. Men do not move at the same light speed as women. Also, there may be other things going on in his life. Does he have children? You have been flying solo — he may not have been. Slow down and give this a little time to unfold naturally. Don’t push it. Not yet. If the holidays roll around and he is still in your life but you find yourself sitting

under the Christmas tree alone, then you’ll know. In the meantime, go to Mayer’s. Sit out on the deck and order the scallops and a glass of pinot grigio. Life is good. Enjoy the moments. Dear Answer Lady Two of my friends are having birthday parties on the same night at the same time. I can’t go to both because one lives off the island and it will take a bit of time to get there. I don’t want hurt anyone’s feelings and we run in the same social circle so it will get back to one if I go to the other. What to do?! — Overbooked Dear Overbooked Tough one. You could go to neither and send a gift to both, which means you miss out altogether on the fun. If you choose to go to one, you must tell the other and be upfront about it. As you pointed out, it will get back to them and you risk jeopardizing one of the friendships. The Answer Lady suggests you go to Coffee Tyme. Order a spice chai and sit back as you decide what it is you would like to do.

Bird Droppings

A

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

cross much of North America, mid to late summer can be a dreary time for bird watchers. With breeding season drawing to a close for most species, woodlands fall silent and with no reason for colored courtin’ clothes, males molt their breeding plumage and don feathers less likely to attract hunting eyes. One notable exception to this end of season retreat is New Jersey’s state bird, the American (sometimes called Eastern) goldfinch. This canary-like late breeder has two molts per year, one in late winter, one in midsummer. The reason for the retarded breeding season is twofold. First, goldfinch are seed eaters. Efforts to breed in early spring would find food stocks deleted. Plus, they line nests with milkweed and thistle down, not available until late summer. Nesting as they do at the edge of open fields, goldfinch are susceptible to cowbird parasitism. Cowbirds do not make their own nests, preferring to egg dump into the nests of other birds who rear the cowbird chick as their own. But American goldfinch has a

NEW!

secret weapon. Unlike goldfinch chicks which are vegetarians, cowbirds require insect prey. So no matter how much goldfinch food the cowbird chick grabs, starvation is its destiny. Goldfinch are common in South Cape May Meadows, in the fields of Higbee Beach and in front of the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park. Don’t forget to listen for the call note — Potato chip. This species is readily attracted to backyard bird feeding stations where its partiality to thistle seed may quickly bankrupt a modest

seed budget. Luckily the birds seem equally pleased to gorge themselves on less expensive black-oil sunflower seed. American goldfinch is not the only yellow bird in town. The smaller, petite-billed yellow warbler is migrating through our region, as are the larger orchard oriole. I don’t know why goldfinch was selected as the state bird, but I suspect that New Jersey Audubon Society petitioned for it. The early part of the 20th century saw a rash of state bird adoptions, a craze rooted in the same conservation movement that gave rise to the Audubon societies. All were a backlash again the exploitative excesses of the Victorians, who saw the demise of vast herds of American bison, the destruction of America’s wilderness and the extinction of the passenger pigeon, once the most abundant bird in North America. So as we celebrate the abundance of American goldfinch, we should be mindful that the fortune of all the birds we hold common today can turn quickly and irrevocable. It’s why the conservation movement is ongoing today — and deserves your support.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

LIZZY is a calm and friendly pointer/lab mix. She is very gentle and walks extremely well on the leash. She seems to enjoy long walks and relaxing in the exercise yard with shelter staff and volunteers. She is about 5 years old. Lizzy could live with another dog with an appropriate introduction. Lizzy would make a wonderful addition to any family. Adopt!

LUCKY is a three year old who has been waiting at the shelter for over a year. She is very petite for her breed, but has a huge personality and tons of energy. Whether she is settling quietly in her kennel or showing off her favorite tricks, she loves meeting new people. Lucky is waiting for her very special someone to love forever. Adopt today!

CRICKET is as happy and energetic as a dog can be. Even though she arrived at the shelter as a stray, she has quickly become a favorite of the staff and volunteers due to her enthusiastic and perky personality. This adorable young girl will be a wonderful companion for a family that is willing to work with Cricket and continue her training. Adopt today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

REESE and her brother came to the shelter over a year ago. Her brother was adopted right away leaving poor little Reese all alone. How could noone want to cuddle with this adorable face? Maybe it’s because shes a bit on the shy side. But if the right family shows her the love she deserves, there’s no doubt she will open up and let you lover her!

STAR is another sad story whose owner passed away leaving her all alone to find a new, loving home. Noone shines brighter than Star. Her joy to see you will make any night in your life seem very bright. She would love nothing more than to hear what you have to say and be able to cuddle you close. Come meet this shining girl!

CODY is round two here at the shelter. He was adopted as a kitten before, but unfortunate circumstances landed him back here. Cody is a huge love bug that deserves another shot at a family. So if you’re in the market for a sweet tuxedo wearing boy, then Cody is the one for you! Stop by the shelter and adopt today.
