Feeling Crabby? Drink A Beer It’s the quintessential summer pairing: fresh seafood and a cold beverage. Last Saturday, visitors to the Emlen Physick Estate were treated to both. The seventh annual Cape May Craft Beer and Crab Festival featured live music, tons of food vendors, an old-fashioned Victorian circus and — of course — plenty of steamed crabs and local and regional beer offerings. Best of all, admission was free. Mark your calendars for next year... we’re already excited to get crackin.’ (Get it.. like, cracking crabs?!)

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. How do I help a sunburn? While time is the most effective healer, adding a cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath can kickstart healing. Chamomile essential oil in the tub will help with stinging and pain. Best advice? Reapply your SPF.

SOME INTERESTING TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Celebrity Sightings

On The Wild Side

Local Landmark

Matt Szczur, a 29-year-old outfielder for the San Diego Padres (and World Series ring holder), hails from the Cape. He’s a graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School and he’s still based here. For him, Cape May is a place that bats 1,000.

In the past 20 years, scientists have had made more progress mapping the surface of the moon, Venus and Mars than they’ve had in the last 500 years mapping the ocean. Ninety percent of what exits in the sea is unknown. [Dun-dun-dun.]

Originally, Cape May city was cut off from the rest of the peninsula by Cape Island Creek. Save for a small portion where the city borders Lower Township, this small waterway is still in tact. But even without it, Cape May is an island. During World War II, the Army Corp of Engineers created a canal connecting Cape May’s harbor with the Delaware Bay, improving Navy operations. You have to cross it to enter Cool Cape May!

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 20. You have three stoves in your Cape May beach house: a gas stove, a wood stove, and a coal stove, but only one match. Which should you light first?

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Crusty Barnacle - ABV: 6.40% This beast is fermented entirely with Brett hops that take on a wave of exotic and tropical aromas of papaya and pineapple. With oats in the malt bill for a greater head retention and a creamier mouthfeel.

Sunset Liquors La Ola Del Melillero - $16.99 A delicate nose of melons and white flowers, with a great acidity, freshness, balance and at the same time, complexity, roundness and unctuousness. This is a great apertif and refreshing white wine that pairs well with chicken and fish.

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: H&H Seafood Market on Ocean Drive. The history: This spot was founded in 2006 as an outlet for the commercial fishing fleet H&H Fisheries. They needed a place to unload their product and sell to the public. You don’t get any fresher than that. The vibe: This is waterfront dock dining, casual and cool. And we mean cool in a literal sense — that breeze off the water is heavenly — though we also mean it in a figurative sense. You order from a window, pick your favorite table under a covered awning and your food is served in baskets. Pretension-free dining that’s a delight for the senses. Take in the salt air, the pink sky (if you time it right) and the calming sound of water lapping against nearby boats and colorful kayaks. This is a slice of Jersey Shore living at its best. The booze: H&H is BYO, and they provide ice and plastic cups. We chose a bottle of Argentinian rosé to pair with our meal because, well, rosé all day. The food: All around us, couples sharing a fun date experience and families looking for a memorable vacation memory cracked and hammered at all-you-can-eat blue claw crabs. They looked delicious (the crabs, not the people) but we opted instead for the lobster macn-cheese, crab dip, crab bisque and Old Bay shrimp. You could call it a crustacean celebration, a shellfish smorgasbord, a sensational seafood spread, a… shame that it was all over so quickly. The oversight: At the time, we did not know H&H offered blueberry white chocolate cheesecake (blame it on the shellfish coma), and so we left dinner without so much as a bite of this delectable-sounding dessert. We appreciate your condolences. The trivia: Old Bay is the brainchild of Gustav Brunn, who escaped Nazi Germany and sailed to the US in 1939 where he combined 18 herbs and spices to create this now famous seafood seasoning, named for a steamship line that traveled the Chesapeake. The takeaway: This is great food with a captivating (crabtivating?) view. What else could you possibly need?

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

ell, I finally did it. I worked a seven-day week. I tried like hell to avoid it this year, maxing out at around five days a week (three short of a Beatle), but those pesky utility bills kept calling my name, and they finally finished building (most of) the damn Exit Zero Filling Station, so here we are. But I digress. As ever, my weeks are bookended by gigs at the Beach Shack at Rusty Nail. Last Monday was a pretty standard Rusty Nail show — that standard being excellent. But this past Sunday had a little something extra on it. Tim Joyce, my wing man, and I arrived around 3:45 and caught the end of Wes Ochs’ set. There were literally zero people in the crowd. This had nothing to do with Wes, who is a very fine performer, and everything to do with the near-100-degree temperature. Sitting on those black beach chairs was like tossing a burger on the grill. Anyway, as we set up, a few tables arrived. Then a few more. Then a few more.

By 5:30 the place was packed, the crowd was rowdy and engaged, calling out song after song that Tim and I either played or faked, and my niece Becca Rondinelli showed up with husband George in tow! (Side note: Becca and I took turns not looking at each other as I sang our customary finale, “Heart of the Matter” by Don Henley, which is difficult enough to sing on its own merits, more so when you realize it’s the first time you’ve seen your niece since your brother passed away.) In general, it felt less like a gig and more like an event, which is pretty

great. Randy and Wendy Redelico (DING!) were there to extend their Terry O’Brien Gig streak to 1,380. We also shattered our record in tips! They like me! They really like me! And that would have been a pretty great way to end a Sunday. Except I had to go to Wildwood. Yes, Wildwood. Cape May’s hungover cousin from the wrong side of the tracks that wears a little too much makeup and last night’s clothes. Wildwood, the Vegas of Jersey minus the class. Wildwood, three family-friendly amusement piers surrounded by 50,000 horny 18-year-olds like the Siege of Minas Tirith. Wildwood, the city that time and the rest of the world forgot. Childwood. I’m kidding. I actually love Wildwood, I just had a bunch of metaphors and similes to use up. Regardless, I was there to run karaoke for an employee party at The Wharf. I was hired by T.J., who works with Conn MacMullan at Owen’s Pub, who’s brothers with Anglesea Pub owner Sean MacMullan. (Following?) As I was loading in, the boys

from Stellar Mojo were loading out. I go back a long ways with singer-guitarist Jon Katity, an early adopter of Terry O’ke and fellow R.E.M. superfan, and an even longer ways back with lead vocalist John King, who looks just like me if you put me on the rack, stretched me out a foot, shaved off 90 lbs, squared off my jaw and made me into a handsome bastard. Stellar Mojo’s got the goods. See them if you can. The party was fine (these kids today and their rap music), but I mostly enjoyed reminiscing about my mid-90s heyday with Southwind. We played The Wharf quite often and it never ceased to rock. Terry O’Brien, Tim Joyce, Ed Dobbs and the late Carl Simpson and “Sugar” Dave Wait. THAT, my friends, was a lineup. Does anybody want my cats? Tuesday I had the honor of being one of the first servers to work at the brand new Exit Zero Filling Station restaurant. After several delays (aren’t there aways in new construction?) the EZFS made its long-anticipated debut and, all things considered, things went pretty well. The menu is built around an array of amazing curries, but also features some truly ungodly burgers, dogs and seafood dishes. Kudos to Jack Wright and his team. Jack is not only a creative editor, talented writer and bold entrepreneur, he’s also a world-class expeditor (guy who puts spoon on plate). Exit Zero Jazz Festival muckety-muck Michael Kline took over on my second and third shifts. Along with myself, that’s a whole lot of artistic talent working in one restaurant. Also? A perfect encapsulation on why pursuing a career in the arts is pointless. Camden lawyer Nick Lierman and his beautiful wife and daughter stopped in for dinner. And to talk to Jack. And Diane. For 45 minutes. That’s okay. Take your time. I don’t need to turn that table to live. By all

August 9, 2018 means. (Geez, one week back as a server and I’m already a salty b-word.) I can’t just now be putting it together that Jack Wright and his lovely bride Diane Stopyra are Jack and Diane, can I? Little ditty and all that? That doesn’t seem possible. (Jack, thank you for the kind words regarding my tribute to my brother, and damn you for the kind words regarding the tribute to my brother.) And while my aging bones are a little extra sore from my first service shifts since December, it’s been an absolute blast going to work with my son, Owen, who stepped up and pitched in when called upon. Not only a great son, but now I can have a drink and HE CAN DRIVE HOME. The Phillies now have Odubel Hererra and Asdrubel Cabrera. The young man walking around Beach Shack with a smile on his face all the time is busser Khamar Matthews, a recent LCMR graduate who played football, basketball and could absolutely stuff you in your locker. Khamar hopes to get into Keane University this fall to continue his education (and stuff nerds in lockers). I look forward to keeping track of this fine young fellow. If you want to catch me this week I’ll be at Exit Zero Filling Station Thursday (4-9), Rio Station Terry O’ke Friday (9-12), Secondo on Saturday (6-10), Beach Shack Monday (430-830), Carney’s Terry O’ke Tuesday (kids 5:30-8:30, adults 9:30-1:30). The Undertow Podcast is on hiatus for a bit as we close out summer, but you can catch the first four episodes at theundertownetwork.com. To support all my creative endeavors, visit Patreon.com/terryoke1 and toss in a buck. Was supposed to write a joke about the vile, smelly Kurt Seer vs the noble, handsome, Chris Bezaire, but I’m out of space... ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Ugly Mug crew, Ashley, Tanya, Joana, Jess and Petra from Cape May, Del Haven and Prague who are going back to work! So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Tom Petty. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am afraid we have to refloat The Concrete Ship again, dear friends. I know, we agreed that night we sank it that we would leave it and its secrets be, but these are desperate times and we need a navy. Obviously we have to look ahead and our best minds (myself and some bar flies in congress at Iron Pier one night recently) have ascertained that once this nation disintegrates into a number of independent city states, we will need to defend our interests with vigor and hot lead. Obviously we have an air force, the centerpiece of which will be that marvelous F-14 Tomcat in our wonderful local Naval Aviation Museum (you MUST visit when in town, ideally purchasing gas at this newspaper’s filling station). It needs some work, but I am confident that within the year I will be in the pilot seat, having painted my clever and slightly double-entendre-ish nickname on the side. “Huge Organ” is mine. But we need to rule the waves, too, and thus far we only have the German submarine, U-858, that we stole away and hid in 1942. We even gave the non-Nazis among the crew citizenship and I am confident that we have a

core of 90-year-old ex-submariners who can still sail the thing. But we need a ship, and despite our efforts, the battleship New Jersey is still in Camden, NJ, where it will remain until we assemble a crack team to buy tickets, take the tour then sail it away. So it is time for extreme measures, and the SS Atlantus is, we are sure, perfectly serviceable with a few minor repairs. Of course it looks to be a wreck, but don’t be fooled. Our expert plans, drawn on a stained napkin, include fill-

ing it with helium balloons. We have calculated that we need only three million such, and have come up with the genius idea to meet that target by hosting and widely advertising The Cape May Inflatable Animal Clown conference. That will achieve several worthwhile goals for humanity in one fell swoop. If I could think of a use for chimpanzees in this enterprise, then I would be able to die a happy man. We do not actually have weapons for the ship, but no matter: I was watching that televised documentary 300: Rise of an Empire the other week and have decided that we need only a bronze ram affixed to the front. I have designed the very thing, a 30-foot spear in the shape of Abraham Lincoln, that will wreak havoc on any ships it impacts. We obviously, for reasons of historical accuracy, need 500 stout men and women to man the oars. To that end, we have an industrial sized jar of choloroform ordered, and several thousand white linen handkerchiefs. We will be looking to employ a few score burly lads and lasses to comprise our Press Gang: this will get the crew and be a tourist draw.

M

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a classic car show

aybe I’ve been brainwashed by the Beach Boys, but cars look more beautiful at the beach. Sometimes it’s because the car is truly gorgeous — there’s a visiting Plymouth Belvedere, circa 1963, that oozes mid-century glamor out of every shining bit of chrome. You can easily imagine Audrey Hepburn driving it, her gloved hand resting elegantly on the giant steering wheel. Other cars make playfulness look pretty, like when a Messerschmitt microcar squeezes into a space built for a bicycle, or when the Linen Ladies and their red and black ladybug car draw giggles. Still other cars are beautiful for the lifestyle they suggest, like when a road-weary car sports stickers from roadside attractions in every state, or pulls a well-loved boat. You imagine the stories those sticky windows could tell. Heck, even a minivan looks cool if there’s a surf board sticking out of the window. Such a visceral reaction is pure id, I know. There’s little practicality in quirky cars. In vintage models, you sacrifice com-

fort, like adjustable seats and headroom, and safety, like restraint systems and power brakes. You certainly can’t plug in your phone to listen to your music. It’s nice that the engines are simple, and you CAN fix the carburetor or the water pump, but it’s annoying that the water pump always needs fixing. With hot rods, you sacrifice gas mileage and storage space for speed. Then again, what you sacrifice in convenience, you make up in style. It doesn’t have to be a DeLorean to be a time machine — you’ll feel seventeen again in a Ford Woodie or a Chevrolet Camaro even if these cars were outdated

before you were born. Slide into the driver’s seat and your imagination will plug your friends into the passenger seats, singing at the top of their lungs. For a few brief moments, the road stretches out before you, free of adult responsibility, with nothing to think of but finding a parking spot near the beach. Visit your dream cars at the Classic Car Show at Historic Cold Spring Village this Saturday and Sunday, August 11-12. Antiques will be on display Saturday from 10-3 and hot rods on Sunday 10-2:45. Restored and preserved vehicles from the 1910s to the 1980s will be parked along the Village’s streets. The Village’s historic buildings will be open during regular museum hours, teaching guests about the crafts, trades and lifestyles of Early America. Admission is $14 for adults and $12 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under 3 are admitted free. The main entrance to the Village is 720 Route 9, Cape May. For more information call (609) 898-2300 or visit the Village website at hcsv.org.

The Theater Column

E

Dottie Knapp reviews “Arsenic and Old Lace” at East Lynne Theater Company

ast Lynne Theater is still “on the sunny side of the street,” but this time the street is in Brooklyn! In the new show, Arsenic and Old Lace, we enter the home of two lovely elderly ladies (Abby and Martha Brewster) who have a “special way” of helping their fellow man. But wait, there’s more. There is a brother who believes he is President Teddy Roosevelt, a criminally insane nephew who reminds everyone of Boris Karloff thanks to the latest botched operation by his companion, a drunken surgeon. Lastly, there is another nephew who is the worst of all — a theater critic! Coming and going are an assortment of police, a minister and his daughter, and last but not least is a hospital superintendent who doesn’t drink, but can’t resist a glass of the sisters’ homemade Elderberry wine. I need to mention the fine work that Mr Hoskins and Mr Spinalzo do. Although they have no lines, they are perfect for their roles. Suzanne Dawson and Gayle Stahlhuth perform as if they really are sisters, Suzanne,

so full of life and excitement and Gayle quiet and meek until you cross her and then she can be quite stubborn. This large cast has a great time with this zany comedy. Everyone is terrific in their parts. Jennifer Flynn plays the minister’s daughter with just the right amount of sassiness to let you know she has spent more time in the choir loft than is wise. Compliments to Scott Harrison (Mortimer) and Morgan J. Nichols (Dr. Einstein) on their physical comedy which has been hilariously directed

by Stahlhuth. It always amazes me how well she is able to use the space, particularly in a scene with nine people on the stage and yet it never seems claustrophobic. The costumes, done by Marian T. Brady, were outstanding but especially the sisters’ funeral regalia. While Tommy Raniszewski plays a number of characters, who doesn’t love him best when he plays an Irish cop. Kegan Witzki, Jeff Sharkey, Bob Reader and Paul Battiato, who in real life is much more handsome than Boris Karloff, and Robert LeMaire are all well suited to their parts and handle the comedy well. Lee O’Connor’s lighting bathes the set in a warm glow and fades to creepy when… If you know this classic play, and most people do, I don’t have to finish the sentence. If you aren’t familiar with Arsenic and Old Lace, written by Joseph Kesselring, this one of the funniest productions in years. The play runs Wednesday-Saturday, 8:00pm through September 1. ELTC is in residence at First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 609-884-5898, eastlynnetheater.org.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am a woman of a certain age, single and... I like younger men. I struck up a conversation with the new mechanic at my car dealership a few weeks back. We agreed to meet for a cocktail at Harry’s one night but it never ended up happening. I texted him last week to see if he was still interested. He said he was but “couldn’t remember what I looked like” and asked me to send him a photo. Which I did and asked him to send me a photo of himself. Which he did — totally naked from top to bottom. Well, that was the end of that upcoming date. But what do I do the next time I need an oil change? Do I ignore him? Talk to him as though it never happened? And is this how millennials navigate the dating waters? — Awkward

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Awkward Sometimes the land of denial is a good place to live in. Pretend it never happened. He may not even remember you because the Answer Lady suspects this is his M.O. with women. And why should YOU be embarrassed? He was the one who sent an inappropriate photo. One would think he would at least wait for the first date before revealing all his assets and shortcomings. As to the mating rituals of millennials — they are certainly a little careless, not to mention

stupidly trusting with the whole internet thing. But don’t judge an entire generation based on one amorous mechanic. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I were at the Rusty Nail about a year ago and a friend of ours came up and asked him to dance. He does not like this woman and said, “I don’t dance, ever.” Well, he does dance. We love to dance. So, we couldn’t dance that night. Instead we were left foot-tapping the night away. Now when go anywhere and she is there, we can’t dance. — Wallflowered Dear Wallflowered Ah, what a web we weave. Tell her the two of you went to Tom Cupp for dance lessons and what a genius the man is. Of course, that means he will have to take a turn with said woman, so he may have to think of another deception — gout? Tell him to dance with the woman and get it over with. If she persists, however, tell her that your wife is the only woman you really want to dance with. Now get yourselves out there to the Rusty Nail and dance the night away.

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

his weekend I was given, once again, a glimpse into how optics can capture and fascinate young and old. The occasion — Beth Van Vleck’s birthday, the setting, a porch beneath a star-studded, planet-rich sky. Twenty-six adults and five grandchildren in attendance Seeing a bright celestial body poised near a half moon, I correctly deduced it was one of the planets in our solar system. With my spotting scope at 20x I was not only able to confirm my suspicion but deduce via the array of moons that it was Jupiter. My challenge: “Who wants to see Jupiter?” Was followed by a chorus of “Me, me, me, me, me.” But, more interesting to me than the enthusiasm of the younger crowd was the interest of the senior set. “Real planet in real time,” I shouted as 26 adults made their way toward the scope. Two, while waiting their turn, called up their star-gazing aps and training their phones on the object confirmed it. “Yep, it’s Jupiter.”

How about that one? Someone wanted to know, pointing in the direction of a bright celestial body almost directly overhead. Noting the brightness, the sense of twinkle and the location, I deduced it was a star. “Arcturus?” I ventured. A guess confirmed by both aps and the arcing handle of the Big Dipper, which points to Arcturus. It wasn’t long before someone noted another bright body just cresting the horizon. I was able to fix the new planet in the scope, expecting to find Saturn, but sharpening the

focus I was surprised to see not merely our solar system’s second-largest planet but a full encircling halo, the ring of Saturn. It’s the first time I’ve seen the full ring. By now everyone was on the hunt. “Where’s Venus?” Someone wanted to know. “Behind the trees,” one of our app-armed party members noted. Yes, that app is handy but my take home is that even in this age, real planets in real time trump every time. On every cloudless night, the universe puts on a show for anyone with an eye for discovery. Just look up. In many places, the show in the night sky has been erased by light pollution. But here in Cape May, with water on three sides and the unblemished sky of the New Jersey Pine Barrens to the north, visitors can still see the sky Henry Hudson saw when he parked the Half Moon in Delaware Bay. I’ll bet you thought you were going to read about birds, didn’t you? You should know that migrating birds navigate by the stars, too. Step outside in the hour before dawn and you’ll hear them.

BUSTER is a medium sized boy who loves to be with people and enjoys long, leisurely walks. While in the yard, Buster chases toys but hasn’t mastered the trick of returning them! His sweet face looks at people as they walk by his kennel, hoping that someone will take him home and allow him to show what a good companion he will be!

KOLBY packs a great deal of personality in a small body! He loves to take long walks where he prances by your side. In the yard, Kolby takes his time examining his surroundings and is willing to jump on a lap for a quick session of petting. For someone looking for an affectionate little dynamo, Kolby would be the perfect fit. Adopt!

COTY is a 10 year old chow who found his way to the shelter when his owner passed away. He was severely matted when he arrived at the shelter so his look has changed dramatically. Coty looks like a shorn lamb! Coty is quiet and polite in manner. He would make an excellent companion in an adult household that is predictable and calm.
