Cape May Culture Last Saturday, the much-anticipated Titular opened at SOMA NewArt Gallery in Carpenter’s Square Mall. Featuring oils, watercolors and graphite drawings from Victor Grasso, the show “combines classic archetypes of beauty with images of looming sea creatures, fairy tale goats, and coastal landscapes,” according to the artist. Also showing was Adam Wallacavage and the Philly-based artist’s famously tentacled chandeliers. Missed out on opening night? No worries — the show runs through September 9. Go get your art on.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. How many pounds of tater tots do Americans eat per year? More than 70 million. In the 1890s, tots were a staple of the finest hotels in Manhattan. Today, in Australia, they’re known as potato gem or potato pom-poms.

Cape May Winery — in the North Cape May section of Lower Township — opened in 1992. In 2003, the Craig family of The Washington Inn and Lucky Bones purchased the business. Today, they bottle more than 40,000 gallons and over 20 varieties of wine, making this the fourth-largest producing winery in the state. (It’s also home to the most mature vines in the county.) Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

T

here are still a few countries in the world that enforce military service upon its civilians — Austria, Denmark, Mexico and Russia among them. I’m not going to suggest that America joins them. However, I AM going to suggest that every American citizen over the age of 18 has to serve at least six months in the restaurant business. I realize there is a lot of strife in this country, and while I don’t believe that mandatory restaurant service will cure all of our ills, I think it will go a long way to alleviating the stress that exists on both sides of the restaurant equation — staff and customers. Cape May is a restaurant town. Among the residents of this area, there are a LOT of people who either work in the industry or have at one time. I’m a newbie. Other than a brief time washing pots in a restaurant kitchen at Glasgow Airport 37 years ago and working at Congress Hall pool bar in 2002, I had no experience when I opened Exit Zero Cookhouse in 2015. Since then I’ve learned a huge amount. Maybe the biggest lesson I’ve

learned (other than the fact that “specials” often aren’t that special) is that the average customer is clueless. Just as I was pre-2015. Like most people who haven’t set foot inside a restaurant kitchen, I would sit back while dining out and toss around the odd complaint about why my food hadn’t come out, or how the server forgot the hot sauce. (I should add that I have NEVER been a jerk to a server or busser. I broke off a year-long relationship after my ex verbally abused a busboy who hadn’t brought her the right bread. It was

a jolting insight into her character.) But now? Now I marvel at how a cook can stay on top of a dozen burgers on the grill at Exit Zero Filling Station, keeping a temperature check on every one of them. Have we sent out burgers that weren’t at exactly the right temperature? I’d be a liar if I said we hadn’t. But I think the average Joe or Johanna would be impressed at the workings of a busy restaurant. And I’m willing to bet they would be a whole lot more forgiving over the mishaps that inevitably happen. Restaurant work is hard. And, for cooks especially, it isn’t well paid. Next time you sit for dinner, loosen up on the judgement and enjoy the moment. No one — from the busser to the server to the cook — is trying to spoil your evening. But mistakes happen. There are humans in that kitchen, not robots. I’ve became uncommonly fond of customers who are chill and get their priorities right. Dinner came late? No worries. No one died here. Sit back, enjoy the show. And for god’s sake, people, stop making changes to our burger menu!

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Beach Plum Farm off of bucolic Stevens Street in West Cape May. The occasion: Jack has lost 10 pounds since opening Exit Zero Filling Station (bussing tables will do that), so he needed a good lunch! The story: This 62-acre farm was launched in 2007 as a way to provide clean produce for the island’s Cape Resorts restaurants. What started as a modest operation has grown to include more than 100 crops. And the concept of the farm has expanded, too. Since the space opened to the public in 2009 it’s become a community hub, a public park and a serene place for connecting with nature and one another over a meal of farm-fresh food and drink. That’s right — there’s now a kitchen on site. The setup: We placed our order inside a rustic, Amish-built, postand-beam barn made from Pennsylvania hemlock, pine and cypress. Then we chose an outdoor picnic table overlooking majestic tulip poplars and flower gardens. Nearby, children fed the farm’s free-range chickens and skipped off to see the heritage, Berkshire, humanely raised pigs. (It’s a Norman Rockwell painting come-to-life!) The chef: Todd Phillips. He’s a graduate of the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute and avid gardener who walks the farm-to-table walk at work AND home. The meal: Colleen opted for the veggie wrap (a wise choice at a restaurant that grows its own kale, asparagus, spinach, zucchini, cabbage, onions, bok choy, squash, radishes… you get the idea). Diane went for the caprese salad because Beach Plum Farm grows at least eight varieties of juicy Jersey tomatoes. And carnivores Jack and Katie chose the barbecue pulled pork sandwich with sides of Jersey corn. The meat comes from very happy animals and you can taste the difference. The server: Jen. She looks like Taylor Schilling, aka Piper Chapman from Orange is the New Black. As far as we know, Jen has never been locked up, but she does do a criminally good job supervising at Beach Plum Farm. Badum-ching! The consensus: Aw man, do we really have to go back to work?

Undertow

B

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

een a sick, snotty, drooly, miserable week here at Undertow Central. And if I have to be sick, snotty, drooly and miserable, then you have to be sick, snotty, drooly and miserable with me (at least for the duration of this column). Everything was going fine. The weekend was busy but uneventful, Monday I enjoyed a day off, Tuesday karaoke at Carney’s was normal (and by normal I mean among the busiest karaoke nights I’ve ever hosted). It was during my equipment load-out, around 2am Wednesday morning, that I felt a little tickle in the back of my throat. By Wednesday afternoon I was feverish, full of ick and without a voice. Gross. So gross I had to call out of my Exit Zero Filling Station serving shifts. I never... well, can’t say never now... but I rarely call out of work. But alas, as a person who makes the bulk of their living with their voice, it was my only choice. Which stinks. Not only do I need the extra cash I make at Exit Zero Filling Station, I actually enjoy working there.

But enough about me, let’s talk more about me… I saw recently that the NFL is going to introduce male cheerleaders. This is all well and good, but will they kneel? Mini-rant of the Week: I heartily, respectfully, disagree with EZ movie reviewer Tom Sims’ assessment of AntMan & The Wasp that “it doesn’t matter” if you’ve missed previous installments. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an endeavor unlike any other in the history of film — 18 movies over 10 years, all sharing

a world where each chapter ties into the next, creating the grandest tapestry ever caught on film. Only Mission: Impossible comes close. And for nerds of a certain age, these movies are the culmination of a lifetime of world-building. The thrill of seeing The Avengers assembled on film for the first time has never been equalled. And I saw Star Wars in theaters. No, not every MCU movie is The Godfather, but the thing is... a few of them are. So, while I won’t call Tom’s review snooty, it was more dismissive than necessary. What a snooty jerk. New EZ Feature of the Week: Find the Laura Zeitler! In these pages or in person! If you see her, yell out, “There’s Laura Zeitler! What do I win!” (You don’t win anything, but the joy of seeing Laura’s face turn red is prize enough.) Speaking of Laura, she wanted me to give a shout-out to everyone’s favorite local guy, John Delowery, who was hanging with Laura and Jim Zeitler at Secondo on Saturday night. (I have no idea what the joke is here, but Laura and Jim always stuff our tip

jar. So here you go.) Speaking of Secondo, if you haven’t been yet, you should. The food is amazing, the vibe is great and I hear they’ve got a pretty good acoustic duo in the bar on Saturdays. I even overheard the big boss, Thea Panico, saying nice things about us. Wait til she hears me with more than two working vocal chords! Was also nice to meet Elise Dalicandro and Kathleen Chiolo at Secondo. They’re our newest groupies. They also sell real estate for Long & Foster. They sat politely and listened to us all night and didn’t boo once. How busy was Carney’s Terry O’ke on Tuesday? So busy that one of my judges asked for a potty break… then never came back. (Nobody local or I’d totally drag them in here.) We snagged someone on the fly, finished strong and had our first ever First Place Sing-Off! The drama! The emotion! The beer! Tuesday afternoons at Carney’s is turning into the Marla Groetsch Show Featuring Karaoke! Marla and her wing girls, Maddie, Cameron, Kameron, Peyton and the rest of the Spice Girls, have made the show a great time. I did not know until this week there was such a thing as “The Taco Song.” Margie Campo seemed a happy mom-mom amongst the youngsters and confessed to having read (and enjoyed!) my book, Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales, published in 2008. As punishment, I will now email her several of my other stories. Apparently I bear a striking resemblance to Chris Funk, guitar player for The Decembrists, which I was told at karaoke after singing a song by The Decembrists. (“Sons & Daughters”, which I, like many others, discovered while rewatching The Office. It’s a long story…) Every time I watch the ESPN scroll, I crave a Tootsie Roll. (Makes sense, I promise.) Friday was a rip-snorter of a karaoke night at Rio Station. This was good, as I rolled out

August 16, 2018 of my sick bed with no voice. I usually enjoy singing about six songs at my shows (it’s why I started the business; to sing a few nights a week even if I wasn’t in a band. Now I’m in four). Thankfully, Terry O’ke Nation came out in full force and saved my ass. There were the usual suspects — Victoria DeFrancisco, Frank Mikulak, Andre the Vocal Giant — all of whom I rely on to keep the wheels turning. But I also get the occasional surprise from the likes of Chris and Shari Murray. Both fine singers. Chris is partial to classic 80s hair metal (and giving the host the finger), Shari goes for more obscure 90s female hard rock (and giving the host the finger). It’s fun and I miss them. Until I see them again. No Randy and Wendy Redelico this week. (Sad ding…) Lastly this week, happy birthday to my youngest son, Henry James O’Brien. A child no more, he turned 13 on the 15th but has the advanced sulking skills of a much older teen. Henry is your typical 13-yearold, loves Fortnite, NBA2k18 and pizza. But he is also atypical because he is mine and I love him very much. So does his mom. But mostly me. I look forward to watching you grow into a fine young man, unlike your rotten, no-god brothers. (Kidding... Owen and Jackson are awesome kids.) I hope you enjoy your video games and Russell Westbrook jersey and 76ers tickets I’m SURE my handsome good friend Chris Bezaire will give us later this year. To support me an mine, visit Patreon.com/terryoke1 and pledge a donation, come to Cabanas Friday, 4-730, and Secondo Saturday, 6-10 for TNT Electric, Beach Shack Sunday, 430-830, for TNT Acoustic, Carney’s Tuesday (530-830, 930-130) and Rio Station Friday (9-12) for Terry O’ke. Wednesday and Thursday I’ll be at Exit Zero Filling Station. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Fabio Apolito who is a dentist from Freehold, NJ on his way to the Toy Store on Washington Street Mall. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? Pope John Paul II. The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

was wandering the widow’s walk on the D’Catur Mansion the other night during a thunderstorm, when a thought struck me. Also, a lightning bolt struck me on the top of my head, which was a reminder to me to get a dentist to remove those old metal fillings. On the plus side, it gave me a burst of original ideas, which included how to solve the problematic issue of cold fusion, the secret of home desalination kits, and a way to stop people from Ocean City from entering Cape May and talking about their boats. Unfortunately my hat was set alight by the bolt, and by the time I had flung it to the wooden boards and stamped the flames out, those other startling and world-changing ideas had gone, too. However, it was then that the thought struck me: we need to harness the power of these summer storms for common good. And I do not by that mean the old use, whereby we would gather unsavory sorts on a disguised metal plate in front of Congress Hall, and then fly kites above them, until such time as lightning struck and there would be a brief and energetic version of that remarkable

Riverdancing show that one of my strange great-nephews made me attend in Philly. I was so impressed that I strode backstage to deliver my regards to the lithe Michael Flatley, but he was still jigging on the spot, and my hand remained unshook as he vibrated like a tuning fork. Then I laid about him with my walking cane, and that stilled the jitters. No, this time we need to be smart, and the lightning mast we are building will connect to leg-thick cables that will immediately send the power to a variety of devices that will benefit

no matter the time of day. Our carbon-to-diamond crusher is one (that also doubles as out pesky tax collector disposal), the arbalest that fires Wildwooders back home if they are here after curfew, the carts that pull raw saltwater taffy from the mine up on Stimpson Lane, and the giant pistons that inch by inch are widening the canal, pushing our island closer to International Waters (and a cunning new tax status). Also, we will have our not-at-all-likeFrankenstein’s-monster scientific experiments to power: at time of typing we have an impressing range of specimens to re-animate, from the griffin that Ernie Hemingway accidentally ran over in his Model T Ford and has been in cold storage ever since, to a dozen or so much-missed pets, to that odd but compelling fellow who came to town claiming to be Jesus, but sadly slipped on a stray pickle on the sidewalk just before he could jot the new commandments down on a cocktail napkin from Iron Pier. His last words were: just put me somewhere with a nice view and I’ll be back soon, but I hate leaving things to chance.

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, jet boating

raveling with teenagers is more of a business trip than a vacation — you’re doing the same work, but in a different location. Experts offer concrete tips to make the most of your family time, and Cape May is the perfect location. Teenagers are notoriously challenging, whether you’ve birthed them or borrowed them. In our better moments, adults have the patience to deal with them kindly. After all, it’s not easy to live in a hormone tornado. No matter what path teens are considering — military, college, or the workforce — some thoughtless advisor is going to have something negative to say. Their summer jobs are particularly gross and their summer homework is particularly hard. Worst of all, they are uncomfortable in their own skin, having no conception of just how cute they are. We get it. But in our weaker moments — say, in a beach house that feels smaller as the week progresses — adults lose that precious patience. A teen’s biological need to

separate from us conflicts with our human need to be treated with respect. We impose consequences, but their contempt hurts our feelings. It wasn’t that long ago that they thought we hung the moon. Parenting experts offer tips for vacationing with teenagers. First, let them sleep in a little, no matter how batty their schedule makes you. Their body clocks are skewed, and they still need nine hours of sleep a night. Second, give them some independence. Let them go to the arcade or to play mini golf without you. Third, schedule some device-free time before you slap the

phone out of their hands. (Just me?) Finally, do something new together. Novelty is relaxing, and East Coast Jet Boat can help. On a family vacation, the goal is to make connections. Excitement connects people, and the jet boat offers plenty of that. Speeding along the waters around Cape May, the boat dips, spins and sprays everyone with water. There’s also an educational component, as the Captain points out landmarks and wildlife, but that’s not the part your kid is going to remember. My nephew’s recap ran along the lines of “wicked turns…blah, blah, beautiful back beaches…cool 360… elegant water fowl…totally soaked.” He only wants to remember 45 minutes of adrenaline, but the quieter moments were a welcome break for the rest of us, and the back beaches really are beautiful. Tickets are $40 for adults, $30 for children. Discounts are available if you buy online. You know your family — this is not the ride for a timid eight-year-old or an achy 60-year-old. Call (609) 898-UFLY or visit eastcoastparasail.com. They can also hook you up with jet skis or parasailing.

The Movie Column

Y

Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Eighth Grade”

ou’ve heard of coming-of-age movies — but have you heard about a stuck-at-an-age story? For some people, this is exactly what their experience is like at the end of elementary/middle school. The new movie Eighth Grade brilliantly depicts this awkward time of uncertainty. Kayla is 13 years old, and she’s one week away from graduating. She’s not the most popular kid in class — everyone thinks she is quiet, and maybe because of this she has trouble making friends. She and her dad live alone, and it’s a little painful to watch her father try to break through the moodiness and aloofness of his daughter to have even a brief conversation. Unlike other coming-of-age movies that depict a strong friendship in the protagonist’s life somewhere, Kayla appears to be a loner, though she does shoot a lot YouTube videos. They are life lesson videos — you heard me right, life lessons from a 13-yearold. Not surprisingly, this insightful kid has a lot to say. Elise Fisher, an award-winning

Elise Fisher impresses in Eighth Grade child actress who has received accolades for her work in the Despicable Me animated feature films, plays Kayla. She puts enough “ums” and “uhs” in those brief videos that you never question her genuine portrayal. Just like you would expect from an overly dramatic teenager, some of the simplest social situations in Kayla’s life present significant personal challenges. She is invited to a pool party for a girl who she knows does not like her. There, she bumps into the boy of her dreams — the one she fantasizes

about kissing. Whenever the music plays as she sees this boy (and his appearances are in slow motion for dramatic effect), it is LOL funny. The kid is as scrawny as can be — yet the music is bold and hard and clearly meant for a more robust looking specimen of a male. This film makes outstanding use of subtle humor like that. Bo Burnham writes and directs. We have heard very little from this millennial. His most prominent work was in the supporting cast of last year’s hit comedy The Big Sick and as the lead in the comedy series Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous. With this level of expert filmmaking, it’s easy to predict that Bo is “gonna be more famous” as well. A brief mention about Kayla’s dad, played beautifully by Josh Hamilton. You can easily get lost in the rapport between these two. And an outstanding ensemble helps to make this a standout stuck-at-an-age film. So check it out... even if you just want a reason to be thankful you’ve moved past this troublesome stage of life.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My ex-fiancée has kept in touch over the years. Not being a vindictive person, I have been okay with that and have always been cordial. I broke off the engagement when I realized that not only had he not yet divorced his wife as he had said, but was dating another woman in town at the same time as I was sporting the diamond necklace and engagement ring he gave me. Earlier this week he texted me a photo of his new Russian wife with a famous movie star at a restaurant in Manhattan. I thought he was just name-dropping, then I noticed the necklace she was wearing. The same one he sued me for when we broke up. Do you think I should cut the ties completely or ignore this ploy to raise my ire? — Diamond Jane

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Diamond The Answer Lady doesn’t understand why you encouraged any communication with someone so deceitful and vindictive. You must be a kind person who still does not understand the depth of the dark side of this man. To your credit, you broke it off before it was too late. He’s probably still furious about that. Ignore him — FOREVER. Having someone like that in your orb is a negative. Visit Patricia Jackson Jewelers and have her make you a piece of jewelry

which will serve as a reminder of how close you came to being married to a cad. Dear Answer Lady A couple of my friends have bigger dogs, and they frighten the life out of me. I noticed that dog people never seem to realize that the attention of their dogs is not always welcome. Furthermore, any criticism is treated as though you were insulting their first born. Is there a polite way of getting this message across without offending the pet owner? — Dog Tired Dear Dog Tired Although The Answer Lady is a dog person, having had a big dog she understands the look of terror on guests’ faces when they visit. Further complicating the matter, the more fearful you are, the more the animal acts out in reaction. When you walk in the room, ignore the animal. If he/she jumps on you, turn your back until he stops. You might also subtly suggest that The Doggie Nanny is available for doggie sitting at dinners and parties, as well as the usual occasions.

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

h, you fortunate reader. You stand upon the threshold of a life of discovery and wonder. Of course, I’m talking about birds. Those multi-colored creatures that gained our envy before our ancestors fell from the limbs of thorn trees on the plains of East Africa. The birds flew. Hence our envy. But you, in Cape May, have placed yourself at the crossroads of bird migration just in time to witness the whole natural spectacle. Fall migration, beginning to end. Remember all the times you shoulda, woulda... bought that property on Cape May Point when interest rates were rock bottom. Purchased those shares of Apple stock before they became a household name. Forget those missteps. Right now you can buy into birding at just the right time. Right now is the time to go to South Cape May (Nature Conservancy preserve on Sunset Boulevard) and harvest a treasure trove of southbound shorebirds with quaint names like yellowlegs, dowitchers and black-bellied plover. The yellowlegs will be

the ones stabbing at the water. Dowitchers probe. Plovers walk, stop, peck, like robins. Take a Cape May Bird Observatory field trip and garner 50 bird species in two hours. Also in August is the vanguard of fall songbird migration. Bobolinks, orioles, warblers of every pattern and hue. The woods of Higbee Beach are world famous. Go on your own or take an organized field trip. At Cape May Point State Park, the first of the migrating birds of prey will be passing

after a cold front. When winds turn northwest, American kestrels, bald eagles and osprey will pass in review. Hawk migration gathers speed in September when the official count begins and the platform will host a cadre of associate naturalists sponsored by Swarovski. There are few places on earth that can match the hawk migration over Cape May. We’re talking an average 60,000 birds of prey between September and November and lots of other species. The interns keep a daily tally of total bird species. It averages about 50 a day, but over 120 have been tallied. In November, the cold weather birds of prey come out: golden eagle, red-tailed and red-shouldered hawk. You’ll need binoculars and you’ll discover why Swarovski has loaner bins. But you can go to the Northwood Center, 701 East Lake Drive. Cape May Point and test drive a Swarovski binocular any time. By the way, the little woodland next door is the hottest birding spot in Cape May...

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

REDS is a lively 9 year old Pomeranian mix who is looking for a family. He is comfortable with children, other dogss and cats - a perfect family companion. Although he enjoys a quick romp in the yard, one of his favorite things is going for a dip in the baby pool- appropriate for the “dog days” of summer. Adopt Reds today!

MISTY is only one year old. She lived in a home with young children, cats, and another dog. Unfortunately, she did not do well with her canine sibling which caused her family to relinquish her to the shelter. She is playful, well mannered and very sweet but would be best in a house as the only pet. Give this beautiful lady another chance and adopt!

COTY is a 10 year old chow who found his way to the shelter when his owner passed away. He was severely matted when he arrived at the shelter so his look has changed dramatically. Coty looks like a shorn lamb! Coty is quiet and polite in manner. He would make an excellent companion in an adult household that is predictable and calm.

SABLE loves to be petted and given attention. He would love the chance to catch the occasional mouse for you, or if you don’t like that, he could keep your feet warm in bed instead! Although Sable requires a special diet, it’s not a big deal. Please come and say hello to Sable. He deserves a happy home just like every other kitty!

CRUELLA is her name. But cruel she is not! She’s just a little cranky to be cooped up with all the other kitties. It’s just too crowded at the shelter for miss Cruella! She’s looking for a family and some space to call her own. Maybe a nice lap or comfy pillow to lay her head on. Could this be you?

TIGER-LILLY is the name her family gave her before they walked out one day. Because she was abandoned, Tiger Lilly has some issues with trusting people. She needs a patient companion who will comfort her with petting and shower her with love. She prefers to be the only pet and likes a quiet household. Could you be the one to save her soul?
