It’s Getting A Little Chili! Clearly, it’s a good time of year for eating chili, since close to 1,000 people headed for the Grand Hotel on February 8 for the eighth annual Cape May Chili & Chowder Cook-Off, run by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May. Although there were some people unhappy at the wait, that’s what happens when an event really takes off. Best chili was won by Coldwell Banker realtor Chris Bezaire, while Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille again won the chowder prize.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Ever wonder why chefs wear those tall hats? It all started in France in the early 1800s. They’re white because that indicates cleanliness, and the tallest hats (toques) were worn by the top chef. The minions? They wore shorter caps.

Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States, was the first POTUS to visit Cape May. He came for Fourth of July in 1855, and stayed at Congress Hall. The motivation? He thought the trip would help his wife’s depression.

Fire Control Tower No 23 is a World War II lookout tower that played a key role in coastal defense, helping to identify German battleships. Built in 1942 and located near Sunset Beach, it’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008 and 2009, the structure was restored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. The third level features a Wall of Honor with then-andnow photographs of more than 100 area World War II veterans.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Every week, we’re offering up a riddle that we first try ourselves. This one stumped us all (except Jack). Can you do better? Answer is on page 18, but don’t cheat. A man shot his wife, soaked her in acid, then 10 minutes later took her out to dinner at the Washington Inn. How did he do it?

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
I
did not spend Valentine’s Day with my bride. That’s because Diane, along with our friends/West Cape May neighbors Jim Barnes and Allison Faith Morgan, drove to the public meeting hosted by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Energy Management (BOEM) at a Hilton in Hamilton, New Jersey, about 100 miles north. (I had a deadline to meet, or I would have joined them — no, really.) The point of the meeting? To answer questions about offshore drilling, since the Trump administration has moved to open nearly all US coastal waters to oil and gas drilling. The proposal would make more than a billion watery acres vulnerable to global energy companies, and this includes the area off Cape May. Imagine being at the Cove on a beautiful summer day and looking up from your beach read (or copy of EZ) to see... a pod of dolphins? A flock of birds? How about a grimy oil rig? Diane, Jim and Allison are all surfers, so they have a vested interest in protecting our oceans. But even if you don’t care about surfing or swimming or kayaking or even occa-
sionally giving a passing glance to the beach to remind yourself how awe-inspiring it is, you should care about this proposal. New Jersey’s annual tourism industry is worth $44 billion — with a B. It’s also responsible for half a million jobs. The commercial fishing industry is worth $7.9 billion. In other words, we are utterly, completely dependent on a clean-ocean economy. We already know that spills are devastating to the ecosystem (and that they’re inevitable), but lesser known is that even

without a spill, the process of drilling releases thousands of gallons of polluted water. Think arsenic, radioactive material and toxic benzene. Secretary Zinke of the Interior Department wasn’t at the BOEM meeting to hear these concerns. In fact, the meeting (held oddly far from New Jersey’s coastal communities) wasn’t open to public comment. All activists could do was submit testimony via computer (which you also can — and should — do until March 9, by visiting regulations.gov). For this reason, nonprofit Clean Ocean Action set up a citizen’s hearing at the next room over, so that public testimony could be heard, transcribed and sent to BOEM. (Shout-out to Cape May’s Jeff Martin of Aqua Trails who serves on Clean Ocean Action’s board of trustees). In the meantime, we look forward to the press conference happening on Monday at the Ocean City Music Pier, where our local leaders, including Mayor Chuck Lear and Congressman Frank LoBiondo will take a stand against offshore killing. Not a typo.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Tommy Caruso from The Ugly Mug is up. How long have you been bartending? 25 years. Favorite drink to make? It’s called a Cubano. Made with a light beer, worcestershire and tabasco sauce and a salted rim. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers start fights! Biggest tip you ever received? $1400. It was during the MidAtlantic Fishing Tournament. Very Nice!
BEER OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Belgian Strong Ale A Belgian beast, fruity and light, the complexity and character of Devil’s Reach comes from a robust Belgian yeast. Deceptively simple, caution is demanded because, before you know it, Devil’s Reach has swallowed you whole.
WINE OF THE WEEK
Collier’s Liquor Store Primarius Reserve Oregon Pinot Noir This beautiful Pinot Noir over delivers in quality with small berry fruit. Flavors of cherry and strawberry are abundant while portrayed in an elegant body. A true winner for any Pinot lover.
Seafood Report Ever wonder the best time is to eat an oyster or a crab? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. This week, after chatting with local fisherman Keith Bove we were informed it’s winter fluke (flounder) season. Did you know that left-side up flounder are flukes, and right-side up flounders are called flounders?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: The Boiler Room. It was packed and buzzy — we got the last table for four. The trivia: Because of the greenhouses at Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May, some of their produce is available year-round, including more than eight tomato varieties. And yes, the pizza sauce on the wood-fired Boiler Room pizzas is made from these local tomatoes. The vibe: Cozy-industrial. (Yea, we made that term up, but it fits, no?) The server: Michaela from Romania. She has really nice eyebrows. Hey, we promised we’d tell you what we talked about at the table. The occasion: It WAS national pizza day, but that’s just a really great excuse to get a slice. The drinks: One berry and apple, which is made from cabernet, brandy, apples, blackberries, strawberries and cinnamon — think posh sangria. One rye manhattan. One old-fashioned. One vodka soda. The mains: We shared four 12-inch pizzas between the four of us — Berkshire (fontina and ricotta cheese, caramelized onions, woodfired roasted wild mushrooms, smoked ham, mustard greens, white truffle oil); sopressata and capicola (sweet sopressata, hot capicola, fig jam, rosemary, aged balsamic, red onion, goat cheese); smokey pulled BBQ (housemade barbeque sauce, Beach Plum Farm hickory-smoked pulled pork, red onion, spicy padron peppers, aged white cheddar, cilantro); and proscuitto (tomato sauce, mozzarella, proscuitto di parma, arugala). Excellent dough-to-toppings ratio. The crusts: None of us ate them. Well, the EZ puppies did. The silverware: Nope. We’re a with-your-hands kind of crowd when it comes to pizza. The run-ins: We happened to see local political activist/avid cyclist David Von Savage and his wife Claudia; big man on (Cape Resorts) campus Patrick Logue; former EZ manager Michelle Mulligan and her wife Paul; and local designer Dawn Austin. ’Twas a pizza kind of night. The consensus: The Boiler Room has stolen a pizza our hearts. See what we did there?

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Tom Stansbury a carpet cleaning tech from Shore Carpet Care. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? TuPac Shakur. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
dictate this from my new office in the glittering Exit Zero HQ, overlooking the city. Well, perhaps I am getting a little ahead of myself. I am spats-deep in mud on the site of the future Exit Zero HQ. I have popped along to make sure the blueprints meet my requirements. Thus far, I cannot find that silver fox of a Scotch publisher anywhere, but did hear a car engine start and the squeal of tires, and so assume he did not hear my arrival and is dashing off on some journalistic errand, such as new ribbon for the typewriters or for “hot metal” that his “compositors” will use to “set” the front page “splash” for printing an “exclusive”. Oh, yes, I am very familiar with the whole business, having started the first newspaper in Cape May. In my day we used parchment for printing and cut potatoes in half and carved every letter out with a pen-knife, to be dipped in ink and pressed to the page. We were somewhat pressed for time, obviously, not to mention potatoes. The fact that the chief “compositor”, Fat Bob, used to take sly bites of the potatoes, did not help. Most days
we were able to produce a single sheet with a limit of 140 characters. We would stick to the basics: “Man Punched in Brawl over Charabanc Parking Row” and “When Will We Ban Bears From Tending Bar? Scandal Must Stop!” and so on. Nowadays it is all about “the brand” and so the Scotchman is opening a palace of Exit Zero wonders, featuring an eaterie, a gasoline-pumping station, a store selling pieces of hokum and the newspaper’s seething newsroom and printing presses. The idea

is, visitors will consider stopping for a gallon of fuel, and an hour later will stagger from the premises with swollen stomachs, armfuls of salty seaside souvenirs that will suggest an oceangoing past to house guests, and a portable version of last week’s news that can be rolled up in one’s pocket and used to deliver stinging smacks to errant children. Above all of that is my planned office, which will feature floor-to-ceiling windows and a large telescope. From there, I will be keeping an eye on you all, and my column will then become a larger part of this newspaper, entitled: “I See That Thing You Do, And Am Full of Disgust.” I will describe your more colorful goings-on in gory detail, possibly with etchings that will capture the full salaciousness of the occasion. Names, ages and identifying birthmarks will of course be captioned, to remove any doubt as to the people involved. Subscribers who agree to pay the new annual fee of $1000 will be given the right to have such details and etchings removed ahead of printing. As a business model, I can see no downside.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, winter beers
A
cold beer refreshes on a hot summer day, but a winter beer can hit the spot after a long session of snow shoveling. In moderation, beer after shoveling can even be good for you. Put a pint glass in the freezer before you go out to shovel and you can look forward to a black and tan or, more politely, a half and half, as a reward for your hard work. (An Irish bartender recently scolded me for ordering a black and tan, reminding me of the association with the British paramilitary force known for its brutal methods of suppressing the Irish independence movement in the 1920s. American bartenders tend not to mind the term.) Fill the glass halfway with ale or lager, and then hold the glass at an angle and pour the stout over the back of a tablespoon until the glass is full. The cold, dry air of winter brings out the taste of the beverage. One — one, mind you — of these layered beer drinks will restore you, with about 250 calories of antioxidants, B vitamins, iron, fiber, prebiotics and even a little protein. Enjoy it with a
bowl of soup without disrupting your healthy eating plan. Indulge with shepherd’s pie or cheesy nachos and you’re going to have to shovel the neighbor’s walk, too. A winter warmer or Christmas beer is any beer brewed to give as a gift. Back when preserving food was a challenge, beer was an especially useful gift in winter — the high calorie count helped keep families going when food supplies might be limited. Beer historians claim the tradition dates back thousands of years, when brewers produced special
beers to mark Saturnalia. Monks continued the tradition to celebrate Christmas, and custom required that European farmers provide their laborers with juleol, or yule ale. Workhouses and orphanages in Victorian England provided their inmates with a ration of beer around Christmas, to supplement their gruel. There’s no real rule about what makes a winter beer, so there is a wide variety. Generally, winter warmers fall into two broad categories, either hearty stouts, high in alcohol, calories and malt flavor; or spiced lagers featuring cloves, allspice and nutmeg. Many are barrel-aged, like whiskeys. Find your favorite winter beer in Cape May — the Winter Beer Garden at Congress Hall is open Friday nights through March. From 5-10:00pm, the fire pits are lit to keep you cozy and warm. Join your friends in a game of tabletop corn hole, or snuggle with your sweetie, safe from most of winter’s chill. Call ahead in the event of severe weather — 609-884-6542. Or, visit the Cape May Brewing Company tasting room and sample a variety of brews to find your warming favorite.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have two good friends, Mary and Jane. The three of us have been pals since grade school. Over Christmas break, Mary and Jane had a huge fight and still are not speaking. The problem is Mary has put me in the middle. I didn’t think she had, but after she found out that Jane and I went to lunch at Lucky Bones last week, she has put me on her Do Not Touch list. Should I try to bring the two back together or just concentrate on repairing my friendship with Mary? — Caught in the Middle Dear Middle What you should do is thank the lord that Mary has shown her true colors. The only recourse you have is to ignore her. If she comes round, fine, but otherwise, what have you lost? Friends don’t blackmail friends nor pull some childish high school maneuver in which they
Wise answers to perplexing questions
try to isolate another by withdrawing their friendship. One final point — it is important to note that Jane did not threaten to withhold her friendship if you persisted in talking to Mary. Quite possibly the grievance is severe enough to warrant such action, but clearly, you don’t think so Dear Answer Lady I’m worried about my four-year-old’s birthday party in May. She goes to a fancy pre-school which I like very much for its educational philosophy but I’m seriously
stressing. Last fall there were parties which included pony rides, another to Wildwood for the kiddie rides. We don’t have that kind of money. Our money went to paying the tuition. What do I do? Our family hosts simple at-home parties with some games and a birthday cake. — Fear of Disappointing Dear Fear Fear not. Your love for your child is the only thing worth worrying about and that is not manifested in how much money you can spend on a child’s birthday party. But the Answer Lady has the perfect solution. There is a spot along the Liberty Way on the Washington Street Mall called Art Block. They host arts and crafts parties. The kids can make as big a mess as they want and come out with something creative to show for their efforts. Bonus — Jo Jo’s Pizza is in the same area and you can treat them to pizza, cheesesteaks and sodas. Serve ice cream and cake as a finale and then send them home all sugared up and ready to present their parents with a nice, tangible memory of the afternoon.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Y
es, I know. It’s February and birds are at their nadir. You’ve chased your snowy owl, gotten your fill of wintering waterfowl and just counting down the days until the first osprey turns up. Don’t sulk. Try gulls. They’re common, challenging and enjoy a high turnover rate. “But gulls are impossible,” you’re thinking. So many plumages, so much variation. Think again. Gulls are large, socially complex and common. What’s more they play fair, stand in the open, allow prolonged study and close approach — and they gather in multi-species flocks, permitting comparative study. But how do you identify, say, adult herring gull? First, it’s one of the most common gulls on the Atlantic beach. The bill is shaped like a church key can opener and the face looks like drawn taffy. The eye is bright, bright yellow and gives birds a mean beadyeyed expression. Legs pink. Body compact. What’s your problem? Great black-backeds are barrel chested
and heavy billed. Lesser black-backeds have plump breasts and more petite bills. Ringbilleds have dull yellow eyes and walk with quick mincing steps. Herring gulls waddle. If you don’t care to pin them down to species, just watch them. Gulls are an integral element of the winter beach. Just hearing the keening cry of herring gull makes me feel 10 degrees colder, and the squealing cry of ring-billed gull always brings my head up. These dapper, quick-stepping birds are ever alert for hunting raptors.
Great black-backeds are the beach masters — whatever rolls in with the surf is theirs. You’ll note, too, that most gulls keep their distance from great-black-backeds, who are not only predatory but canibalistic. On the other end of the scale are the delicate, tern-like, Bonapartes, who like to hover over turbulent water and pluck near-invisible edibles from the surface. The Second Avenue jetty is a great place to see Bonapartes. In terms of gull identification, the large format Sibley Guide to Birds is simple, well conceived, lucid, and utilitarian. You need this guide, written in Cape May Point. Wife Linda and I own half a dozen of them. One for each car, one for the upstairs bathroom, one for the library, one for my office, one for the kitchen table whose normal range, also incorporates the downstairs bathroom. So... gulls. Don’t be frightened. They’re easier than sparrows and they don’t hide in the foliage like warblers. The gray frontier. It’s what winter birding is made for.

The Movie Column
T
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews the local Oscar party!
he Oscars are Sunday, March 4 and why experience the thrill of the red carpet alone? Join the Cape May Film Society elite (some regular folk, too) at Elaine’s to talk about “who she’s wearing” and “what he said.” Oh and talk about a movie or two as well (for good measure). We reviewed many of the best picture nominated films right here, so if you’re scurrying to line up at the theater or add to your Netflix queue to catch up, look back on our columns to get the scoop! The Shape of Water was flooded with an impressive 13 nominations (the most of any film this year). It’s a nostalgic, 50s-style romance and horror creature flick combined, and it’s magical (see our review a few issues ago). Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including best picture. Elissa Campanella, one of our contributors, says, “If ever there was a film that skirts the black and white of morality, this is it — a film possessed by damaged people struggling to keep their heads above water emotionally and in some cases physically!”
Stephen Spielberg’s The Post is about the Washington Post’s printing of the Pentagon Papers. Campanella wrote a couple weeks ago here: “The truth here is that although this film is not perfect, the themes presented remain important and, sadly, current.” The film got two nominations with one for Meryl Streep for best actress. Will she win her fourth? Chances are not likely. Dunkirk got mixed reviews — and right here in this column! Mike Chamberlain did not like the film nearly as much as I did. It received
eight nominations including Best Picture. No really, that wasn’t a “so there” moment on my part — really it wasn’t! Get Out got four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. I liked it but not nearly as much as another film released by the same producers called Sleight (which was nominated for nothing). Lady Bird is Greta Gerwig’s latest, and it was very well done. For a first-time Oscar nominee, she did very well — nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and the film for Best Picture. She has been a favorite of mine for years, and I’m convinced she will walk away with something! Phantom Thread was nominated or six Oscars and was just reviewed here last week. Join the Oscar party March 4! Now for my own Oscar speech. Thanks very much for reading the Movie Column! I could not have done it without my guest columnists (Dottie, Elissa, Gayle, Mal, Michael, and Veronica). You all are the best! Oh… the music is starting telling me to get off the stage? Okay, okay, I’m done.

SANDY is a chow chow mix who is looking for a caring “retirement” home. She was adopted from Canada and lived in a home until three years ago when her owner died. Since then she has been living outside and has developed severe arthritis in her back legs. Hopefully there is a caring individual who will open their home and heart to Sandy.
BRONSON maintains his big smile in spite of saying good bye to his family when they moved and could not keep him. He was clearly loved by his family which included a small child who hugged him very tightly before he went to his kennel in the shelter. Give Bronson another chance at happiness and adopt him today!
BUDDY is a happy, frisky young dog who craves exercise and affection. He arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer take care of him but she indicated that he lived with cats. He is extremely affectionate and willingly climbs in laps if allowed. Buddy would thrive in an active family that would continue his training. Adopt today!
The best read of the year! It starts with a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast of Cape May and develops into a story that will keep you turning the pages... Available from Whale’s Tale and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or you can buy a copy at the Exit Zero online store. Visit ezstore.us/books.
