Seafarers’ Weekend At Cold Spring Village P62-64
One-hundred-and-fifty-one boats entered this year’s MidAtlantic Tournament, which kicked off on August 19 and wrapped up on Friday. The 27th annual competition, widely considered sportfishing’s main event, awarded more than $3.3 million in prize money. A record-setting 55 blue marlin were caught. On the final evening, a lavish celebration featuring booze and buffets (and likely lots of spirited conversation about the ones that got away) was held at Canyon Club Resort. Next year’s tournament is already on the books for August 18-23. In the meantime: Fish happy, Cape May. Top photo: Reelin Feelin Gimlet Aleksey Moryakov

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What is a draisine? A two-wheeled device with no pedals that’s mounted by a person and propelled by pushing one’s feet against the ground — a precursor to the bicycle. It was invented in 1817 by a German baron named Karl von Drais.

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
I
was skeptical when my wife, back in January, suggested we do a blurb each week on a celebrity who’s visited Cape May. I was even more skeptical when, on week two of our current volume, she was floating a B-list name. But I have to say, I’ve been impressed with the roster. By now, most of us have heard about the Hollywood starlets who’ve shopped at Collier’s (Anne Hathaway), the US presidents who’ve stayed in Congress Hall (Ulysses Grant), the daytime television queens who’ve dined at The Blue Pig (Oprah) and the fictional characters who’ve sunned themselves on our sand (Betty Draper, Mad Men). But some names which amped Cape May’s cool factor have flown under the radar. This week, my wife’s aunt Debbie brought to our attention an obituary she read in March — that of 87-year-old Jane Moffet, who lived in Rio Grande. Jane, who received her master’s degree from Rutgers, spent 42 years in education, 23 of them as principal at Saddle Brook High School in north Jersey. You get all of that information from Jane’s
may be cool, but so are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. You never know what stories your neighbors have to tell. I will always have warm feelings for the Ugly Mug, even though I’m too old and too married to party there the way I used to in the early days of Exit Zero — Terrible Tuesdays were a highlight. The Mug is a Cape May classic, and coming up soon is one of its most beloved events, the frothblowing contest. This hot mess of an event will be held on Sunday, September 9 and will be the 70th ANNUAL. That’s some record. If you’ve never been, it’s one of the quirkier Cape May events. Speaking of classics, Rio Station is up for sale. For four decades, Ric Rutherford and family have been dishing out consistently good food at this local landmark. I know that Gordon Ramsay was sniffing around it a few years ago, but the family didn’t want to sell at the time. The asking price is $3.5 million. Interested? Don’t bug the Rutherfords. Call big Yogi Kurtz at Coldwell Banker — office number is 877-248-2684. Happy Labor Day!

obit before you get to this: Jane, inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, was a catcher with the Kalamazoo Lassies, one of the original teams of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League depicted in A League of Their Own. You know, the 1992 classic starring Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks (“There’s no crying in baseball!”). The film tells the story of the launch of a women’s league after World War II threatens to shut down the MLB. It’s a good reminder: Celebrity sightings

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Corey Johnson from the Congress Hall Pool Bar is up. How long have you been bartending? Almost 10 years. Favorite drink to make? A mojito, but my margaritas are the best. Diane can attest to that. She slugged hers down in less than five minutes! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers act ready to order when they’re not, and when they put their hands in the fruit tray. Biggest tip ever? $375.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Harpoon’s on the Bay in North Cape May. The vibe: Imagine a Jimmy Buffett song come to life. The conversation: We talked about how lame it is when an employee doesn’t show up to work because they’re hungover. “Yeah,” Katie said, “just show up and take a nap on the couch like I do!” The server: The very friendly/capable Yulia from Russia. She has a large tattoo on the entire front of her neck. “Is that a wolf?” we asked, to which Yulia replied in the affirmative. “Do people ask about your tattoo a lot?” we further asked, to which Yulia replied again in the affirmative. “Is that annoying?” we asked again, to which Yulia thricely responded in the affirmative, quickly adding, “But not when you guys do it!” Sure, Yulia, sure. The food: We ordered the addictive, hand-dipped tempura rock shrimp, tasty mahi fish tacos, a refreshing beet and goat cheese salad, a savory el cubano sandwich and hot wings — grilled, not fried… a revelation! We did not order any Island Oasis frozen drinks because it was a work day and we didn’t want Katie to get wasted away again in Margaritaville and end up on the office couch AGAIN. But, damn, they looked good. The infatuation: Turns out, all the women who work in the Exit Zero office have a crush on Doug Marandino of Cape May Honey Farm and a Washington Inn veteran. Doug helps oversee the kitchen at Exit Zero Filling Station, where — unbeknownst to him — he’s won the hearts of Diane, Colleen and Katie. Even Jack recently referred to Doug as “smoogy-boogy” in a group text. What can we say? The man has undeniable sexual magnetism. (And thankfully he’s a very good sport.) The dad joke: “You have a chip on your chin,” Diane said to Jack, pointing to the crumbs of a tortilla stuck in his beard. “No, it’s on my shoulder,” Jack said. The consensus: Blew out a flip-flop? Stepped on a pop top? Cut your heel and had to head back home? Harpoon’s will help you hang on.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
t may be hard to tell by reading this (or perhaps it’s incredibly easy to tell by reading this) but I may have had a couple of cocktails before sitting down to tap out this little missive. IN MY DEFENSE, I forgot I had a column due. Then had a couple of cocktails. And some day, when you’ve all shed a tear over my Great American Novel, you’ll say something like, “Man, remember when he wrote that drunk column a few years ago?” It’s a tale as old as time. So… where was I? Right! My column. Had what may have been the sweatiest night of my life on Monday. Wait. Let me rephrase that. Had what may have been the sweatiest GIG of my life on Monday. I’ve been very sweaty a lot of times so it’s hard to say exactly which was the sweatiest. Put it this way; before Tim Joyce and I (TNT Acoustic) even started playing, I needed a new shirt. I didn’t HAVE a new shirt, but I certainly needed one. It was so hot, the audience was too
tired to even clap after half of our songs. That’s a reason why people don’t clap, right? Right? Anyway, it was just another in a string of excellent gigs at the Beach Shack at Rusty Nail. My voice has been shot since about mid-July, but people see to still like it, for the most part, and I may have even lost a pound or two! Randy and Wendy Redelico (Ding!), the world’s friendliest stalkers, were on hand. And, lucky for them, they got to meet my wife, Cathrine, whom they have
only been lightly stalking for the past couple of weeks. Cath sang a Fleetwood Mac song with us and, of course, walked off with the loudest applause of the night, damn her. This reminded me of my 90s heyday, when I would take my bow after the show at Elaine’s, hop on my bike and hustle to the Shipwreck Saloon or Rusty Nail version 1.0, sing my guts out for an hour or so, only to invariably have someone say to me, “Hey Terry, you sound great!” Beat. “When is Cathrine getting here?” Our marriage is one of those keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer type deals. (If she can start hosting karaoke and stringing together 1200 relatively cohesive words every week she won’t need me at all anymore. Which is why I never let her type.) And, yes, she did cry while reading my awful bathroom stories last week. What can I say? Some guys got it, some guys don’t. “It” being a horrible stomach virus. Terry O’ke at Carney’s has officially

wrapped for the season. I was kind of hoping for one more week to see if Bones the Bartender was able to break his personal best of 10,000 lemons sliced in one hour. Alas… But I had a great time there this summer. Made some new friends. Rekindled some old ones. Had a drink. Ate a sandwich. I think my electric bill is due. I really need to cut the grass this weekend. What were we talking about? Special Carney’s thanks to all the judges, all the singer, and, of course, Pete Daly for printing up some scorecards and number placards, lending a modest air of competence to the whole zoo. So as one gig closes, another one opens. As you may have read last week, my new band, The Credibles, debuts Saturday, September 22, 8pm at Cabanas. And, hopefully, we’ll have time to rehearse once or twice before then. The Credibles will be a lot like your average Saturday night Cape May party band, except awesome. We’re going to play a lot of songs you’ve heard a lot, a handful of songs you’ve heard a little, and a few you’ve never heard at all. I’ll introduce the line-up as we get closer to the gig, but it’s a group I’m excited to work with and I can’t wait for you to hear us. We also have a couple of Beatles shows coming up; Saturday, September 15, the Love Me Dudes are the headliner at the Cape May Brewfest at the Emlen Physick Estate, 3pm-6pm. As well as Sunday, September 23, 8pm at Cabanas, for something of a “surprise” Beatles Night. I love this band, and while we only play about a half-dozen gigs a year, they are the half-dozen nights I most look forward to all year. Would love for you to come join us. (Plus, I’m not sure how much longer I can keep hitting thee McCartney notes.) There’s also a Columbus Day weekend Billy Joel show on the horizon, and theater
August 30, 2018 returns to the Iron Pier Craft House with The Mostly Dead, just in time for Halloween. But more on those later. Did I tell you I got to meet Dr J on Saturday? It’s true! The Sixers Shore Tour was in Stone Harbor (after stops in Cape May and Wildwood) for the day, I clicked on some “Click Here to Meet Julius Erving” tab, and lo and behold Henry and I were chosen for a meet and greet with the guy who invented the NBA as we know it (and my personal childhood hero). The “meet and greet” was more of a “handshake and hurry”, but it was still great to say hello to the owner of the two greatest in-game dunks in the history of the game — 77 over Bill Walton, 83 over Michael Cooper. Fight me. Terry O’ke at Rio Station was a little laid back (read; SLOW) this past Friday, but that didn’t keep me from rubbing elbows with Lataysha Matos, owner/operator of Caribbean Hair in Wildwood. Tay (pronounced “Tie” unless you’re the karaoke host who likes to annoy her) says she gives the best haircuts around. Since I haven’t had a haircut since around 1997, I’m prepared to take her word for it. You should, too. Check her out if you get over the the island. And ask her to sing Marc Anthony. For several weeks now I’ve been SURE that the actor Andre Braugher (Glory, Brooklyn 99) has been researching a role as a pizza delivery man because I was POSITIVE he’s been coming to the Rio for a drink after work in his Domino’s uniform. After delicately broaching the subject (and making sure I wasn’t being racist), it turns out this man is Gary Bethune, who is most decidedly NOT Andre Braugher, but, oddly enough, IS related to Donald Faison, of Scrubs fame. His aunt also helped found ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Harold Buckley a marketing man from Massapequa, NY who is currently walking the mall. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? Abraham Lincoln.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
A
An Open Letter to Our Dear Departed Shoebies nd by “dear departed” I do not mean those who have, through accident or (our) design (because they annoyed us) shuffled off their mortal coils, as deceased people do not, as far as I am aware, receive subscriptions to Exit Zero, though it is said that if you randomly open the paper with your eyes closed and mark the spot with a pin or marker pen, that the next three words will give you an accurate summary of your future. Try it now, and write to the editor with the results. If any of those pins strike an advert, then buy that thing right away, mentioning my name, then try again for another letter. Obviously this newspaper is full of pictorial images and so should you land on one of them, you must straight away and with no ado, go to that spot: luck will follow. Clearly, should it land on a photograph of a child on the beach, you must under no circumstances at all seek to find that person (if you are not convinced, then come and see me: I will beat the wrongness out of you with my silver-topped walking cane). Anyways, this column is an ode to the out-
of-town visitors who come here like the great herds of buffalo that used to travel this land from coast to coast (or from wherever buffalo liked to be, to wherever they next liked going, such as a nice stream, or the herbivore equivalent of a coffee shop), leaving behind mountains of steaming poop. Oh, wait, no, that was the actual buffalo. Shoebies seldom do that. But really, I want to apologize if I was at any time rude to you. Perhaps you stumbled in my way during my morning constitutional, or took my favored spot on the boardwalk, or
cast a vast shadow over my god-like form as I sunbathed on the beach. And possibly, in a (justified by I must admit, hurtful) rage, leapt to my feet and struck you with fists and feet. Or worse, set Young Albert on you, to savage every square inch of you, or at least every square inch below the knee. But really, you should know we love you, and appreciate you, and would not change a thing about you. Mostly. Well, not too much. At once. But for now, let’s celebrate all we adore about you: your vast appetites for food, drink, saltwater taffy and on average 36lbs of assorted tat to assist you remember what a remarkable time you had here). Your wish to enjoy every single activity in the city, no matter how ridiculous, and to pay for the privilege. Your purchase of beach tags, your stays at local hotels that in turn employ glorious and surly visions of youthful eastern European perfection who will smile and say offensive things about you in Latvian under their breath when you flirt clumsily. Remember: Nobody loves you like Cape May does.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, craft shows
raft shows are having a moment. Our tech-loving society still needs to connect with people who make things by hand. We have had enough of Photoshopped perfection and Snapchat filters. Instead, we seek the humanity of handcrafted items. Like people in the Victorian era who rejected factory-made items, we seek “visible artisanship.” “Makers” are earning respect, and at a craft show, you get to meet your makers — in a good way. Connecting with the artisan who crafts an item adds to its value, making a gift more meaningful and a souvenir more memorable. Surprises await — maybe the maker of that delicate earring is a middle-aged man or the painter of that graphic nature scene is a young woman. Get the story behind a piece — ask when a photograph was taken or what materials were used for a painting or where the beach glass in the jewelry was found. You never know what you’ll find at a craft show — maybe a beach-themed note card to let your college freshman know
you’re thinking of her. (For my fellow empty nesters — the Original Fudge Kitchen ships nationwide, so send some saltwater taffy to the dorm for your kid to share with new pals.) It’s not too early to think about Cape May souvenirs for the holidays — you may find hats, keychains or scarves. Local honey, jams or pickles let you extend the taste of summer. Perhaps there’s a painting to fill that blank wall at home. Look for hostess gifts — wine glass markers, for example, or fancy doggy treats. Summer clothes in next year’s size will brighten up winter birthdays.
Of course, you have to bring your manners to a craft show. If the booth is crowded, your on-on-one connection will have to wait. Remember that some items are expensive — fine fabrics, art and jewelry are costly even when they are sold over a plastic table at the beach. Don’t bring your beverage into a booth. Don’t touch things without asking, especially if your fingers are covered in sunscreen, and ask before taking pictures. Watch your kids. And remember, that technology we’re rebelling against is a great way to keep in touch with a vendor you like. Meet your makers at the Summer SendOff Craft Show on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday September 2 on the promenade from 10-5. Admission is free. If you like your crafts served with beer, visit the Harbor Brew Fest at the Physick Estate on September 15. The Physick Estate also hosts the Autumn Crafts and Collectibles Show on September 29, the Victorian Weekend Show on October 7. Convention Hall has additional craft shows on October 13, November 3 and November 23.

Tom Sims reviews “Mission Impossible: Fallout” and “Christopher Robin”
ime for a mash-up! Mission Impossible: Fallout and Christopher Robin are as unlikely a pair of movies as you’ll ever see. So what do they have in common? Mission Impossible is the 95th installment in the Tom Cruise series. Nah kidding — but I did lose count. It’s highoctane summer madness at its peak. And by that I mean the highest point on a mountain where Cruise can hold on for dear life. Fast car chases, death-defying escapes, trick plots — oh heck throw in a ticking timebomb (make it nuclear, for good measure). I missed the first few flicks in this series — got bad ratings. But I caught the last one, subtitled Stop Me if You’ve Seen This Stunt Before — honestly, it wasn’t that bad. Fallout wasn’t bad either if you don’t have high expectations. It’s hot outside. There’s a bunch of crappola in the news. Why not sit in a cool theater and escape. Get a popcorn while you’re there. The theme that stood out is that the Cruise character, and only his character, could save the day. It made me think. How
many times in our lives are we in the unique position to “save the day”— maybe not very often, maybe a lot. Maybe you are the kind of person who steps into a situation and makes things right. A doctor, a nurse, a teacher, really can be any job — you know you were born to do the job and help in only the way you can. There aren’t many of us around who can say that. Enter the live-action Christopher Robin
(played by Ewan McGregor). Now, this film I thoroughly enjoyed. With two daughters who were in love with Winnie the Pooh growing up, there was no doubt I was going to connect with this movie. But did I ever connect! Hand me another tissue. The plot is as simple as that “silly old bear.” When Robin grows up, will he remember his friends in the hundred acre wood? He’s magically transported back to where his old gang needs him most. And, like Cruise, he must save the day from fearsome ( yes, imaginary) heffalumps and woozles. At one point, Robin smashes his briefcase of work to make it sound like he’s defeating the dangerous creatures! Brilliant! Only the one man who knew the woods so well as a child is in the position to help. Pooh remains one of the most endearing (and enduring) characters of our times. And this movie does him justice. Go see it, because let’s face it — in the end, you’re the only one who can save the day from the heffalumps and woozles we all have in own own lives!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I broke up with my boyfriend about a year ago and he still does not talk to me. We lived together for five years. I don’t understand this. I never did anything to him that deserves such harsh treatment. It wasn’t working out and we went our separate ways. Admittedly, I did initiate the break-up and I thought it was amicable. It bothers me that he doesn’t acknowledge me when we are in public. It’s embarrassing. What should I do about it? – Bewildered Dear Bewildered Amicable or not, you rejected him and it would seem he still feels the sting of that rejection. Give it another year or another girlfriend. In the meantime, do not force yourself on him. If you see him in public
Wise answers to perplexing questions
make eye contact, if he turns away, that is your cue to do likewise. People are not puppies, they don’t always respond the way we would wish. You, on the other hand, should get together with your girlfriends and have a night out at Hawk Haven Winery. A little wine, a little entertainment and a beautiful setting will ease your discomfort. Dear Answer Lady I am 33 and still single. It seems that the men in my life are either incredibly needy and cling-ons who never allow me any
space or they are so unbelievably distant and non-committal that my space is an empty cavern. I want to be married and have a family and I need to get on with it. Do I put out some signal that prevents me from attracting the kind of man I want to spend my life with? I am just so frustrated. I feel as though I should try celibacy. — Looking for Mr Right Dear Looking As to celibacy... no need to go postal. The Answer Lady is a big believer in feng shui. It appears that you are ambivalent about your intentions and, therefore, putting out mixed signals. If you truly want to be married and have a family, you must begin each day with that intention and embrace the fact that you are worthy of that. Do that and The Answer Lady is confident Mr Right will appear — BEFORE you waste time finding out the obvious. Visit Lace Silhouettes and choose something sexy and frilly; something that says, “I have a secret and that secret is that I have a lot to offer to the right man. All others, need not apply.”

Bird Droppings
F
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
or many, late August ushers in the season of back-to-school-shopping. In early September we enter pro-football season, to be followed by The Holidays. Bird watchers follow a different timeline. The Holidays begin now. A time marked by mass movements of assorted bird species, We’re talking, National Geographic spectacles arriving daily on our doorsteps, The other night, about 750,000 purple martins descended into their Maurice River roost just north of the Mauricetown bridge. The next morning, waves of eastern kingbirds fanned out across the Cumberland County skies. But you don’t need to leave Cape May to feast your eyes on masses of these dapper, pugnacious flycatchers. The canopy of Higbee Beach’s woodlands is one of the kingbird’s most important migratory staging areas. By October, the kingbirds will be gone. Seasonality is like that. Now you see ’em, now you don’t. So catch that wave. Enjoy also the waves of orioles, yel-
m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s
low warblers, cuckoos and bobolinks, all responding to the setting of their internal clocks and waiting for their migratory urge to be triggered by a passing cold front. We birders live and die by cold fronts. Butterfly watchers should pay heed, too. Any passing front in September and early October will trigger an orange wave of gossamer-winged insects. It looks like a good year. Where summer was rainy in New Jersey it was mostly dry in Northern New England. Dry summers boost monarch productivity.
Another early migrant worth watching is ruby-throated hummingbird. On a recent Monday morning South Cape May Meadows bird walk, we tallied about six. A good place to see them is the visitor building near the Nature Conservancy’s parking lot just off Sunset Boulevard. The red blossom-bearing vines are a magnet for hummingbirds. A good place to look is the nature trail at CMBO’s Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drivr, Cape May Point. You should find migrating warblers, orioles and vireos there as well. Stop by the nature shop and ask what’s being seen. But if you have your heart set on migrating shorebirds, go now. The season’s ending. Those sandpipers you see on the beach constitute the curtain call for southbound shorebirds. Called sanderling, they don’t breed here, they are high Arctic breeders, heading south. By the time Dunlin arrive, in October, shorebird migration is over. Don’t worry, there are still weeks of fall migration ahead, apportioned by the species that pass.

SISSY is a 9 month old black lab mix who was found wandering and brought to the shelter. She is a social girl who is eagerly learning new skills to make her transition to a home easier. She loves to run in the yard chasing toys and has beautiful leash manners. Sissy would be a wonderful addition to any family. Adopt today!
LIZZY is a calm and friendly pointer/lab mix. She is very gentle and walks extremely well on the leash. She seems to enjoy long walks and relaxing in the exercise yard with shelter staff and volunteers. She is about 5 years old. Lizzy could live with another dog with an appropriate introduction. Lizzy would make a wonderful addition to any family. Adopt!
SHEBA is a mannerly, playful girl who loves people and enjoys a good game of fetch in the yard with a tennis ball. She loves to take long walks and has good leash manners. Sheba is also crate trained which makes the transition to a new home an easier process. Previously she lived with children. Stop by the shelter and give sweet Sheba a forever home!
