It was back to the 40s at Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum when the annual AirFest event was held, August 31 thru September 3. There was music from a swingtime band, a 1940s radio show by DJ Ted Schwartz, a lecture from an Auschwitz survivor, a chance to meet Rosie the Riveter — and for the really lucky visitors, the chance to fly in World War Two aircraft including B-17, B-24 and B-25 bombers. The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Why are more babies born in September? It’s the most common birthday month in the US largely because Christmas-time is the most common time for... nookie, let’s say. Least common birthday month? December.

The Italianate-syle Harrison, designed by renowned architect Stephen Decatur Button, was commissioned in 1867 as a private residence for Philadelphian Samuel Harrison, who was rich with post-war money. One of the home’s most recognizable features is a cupola that served as Victorian-era air conditioning. When all the windows were open, hot air would be pulled up and out the center. These days, The Harrison is an acclaimed (and beautiful) bed and breakfast inn.

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
A
s I write this, it’s Tuesday after Labor Day weekend. This morning, I walked my dogs and then drove to CVS for a gallon of milk on roads that felt considerably larger than those I’ve been walking and driving down the last few months. On an empty West Perry Street, I felt relief. This is not a tourism-shaming column. I am not relieved that the people who are the economic lifeblood of this community are gone. As a business owner, I feel the opposite — I’d take crowded beaches and impossible parking if it meant a few more bodies in restaurant seats come the sleepier seasons. Rather, my relief at seeing an empty West Perry came with the absence of another emotion: a summertime fear that I will run over one of the many bikers navigating the perilously narrow space between parked and driving cars in the West End Garage section. It’s as white-knuckle a stretch as you’ll get in Cape May, made scarier by heavy pedestrian traffic. I’ve seen drivers wag fists and fingers at these bikers when they migrate toward the
center of the road, but can you really blame them? Joining the flow of traffic seems somehow safer than skirting alongside it without the buffer of a bike lane. I didn’t even realize how great my fear of taking out a toddler on a tricycle is until I felt the relief that set in this morning. It strikes me that Dread on West Perry Street, while a decent horror film title, is likely not something our tourists are missing about Cape May right now. It’s my hope that, before next season, our relatively new bike and pedes-
trian safety committee will make this area of town a priority. One suggestion: Perhaps we close Myrtle Avenue to cars and we close West Perry to bikes. Everyone then gets their own lane, with Wilbraham Park in between. In the meantime, if you ARE one of those visitors who’s now left town for the season, and you’re reading this from your year-round home, know that we’ll miss you. But it’s not goodbye, as they say. It’s see you later. We’re sure glad we didn’t run you over while you were here. Was so sorry to hear of the death of Ronnie Tedesco, a real Cape May character. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, I’ll bet a lot of you have bumped into him. Ronnie was the mascot of the Ugly Mug, Cape May Fish Market and Delaney’s. You’ll have seen him dresssed as a lobster and as a leprechaun, an outfit that suited him well since Ronnie was always full of laughs. He was also our unofficial carrier of the haggis at the Burns Suppers we held at the Ugly Mug. As we say in Scotland... we’ll miss you, wee man. Rest in peace, Ronnie.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Matt Jackson from The Rusty Nail and a “fill-in” at the C-View is up. How long have you been bartending? 12 years. Favorite drink to make? A frosé. It’s frozen rosé. I press a button and it comes out. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer orders a water and leaves without taking a sip, leaving the full glass of water on the bar. What a waste of water! Biggest tip ever? $100.

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that eggplant is in season. Did you know that eggplants aren’t really vegetables, they’re berries. Which isn’t that strange, considering other fruits are commonly mistaken for vegetables – like tomatoes. Like the tomato, its skin and seeds can be eaten, but like the potato, it is not to be eaten raw.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
as Aretha Franklin’s funeral ended yet? (As I typed this sentence in the Exit Zero Filling Station gift shop, “Respect” came over the speakers. I will take this as a sign that I best not venture any further into Aretha Franklin humor.) Speaking of Exit Zero Filling Station (I have a BFA in segues), if you haven’t been, drop in for a bite. I just had the spectacular huevos rancheros bowl (on Saturday, at 8am, my happiest time) and I’ve served just about every dish on the equally spectacular dinner menu and the only complaint I’ve gotten so far is that the food is just TOO DARN GOOD. (Yes, Exit Zero pays me for this column. No, that does not influence my opinion. Have you seen me? Food is my favorite thing. And puppies.) Visit me every Wednesday and Thursday (and the occasional Tuesday and Saturday) and remember the Terry O’Brien Guide to Tipping: 15% for adequate service; 20% for exceptional service; 25% for Terry O’Brien.
While you’re there, grab some EZ swag from the shop, which nicely blends the feel of Macy’s and 7-11. T-shirts, hats, glasswares, books. Lots of books. So many books. So, so many. Which reminds me; you can order your copy of Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales, published by Exit Zero, on Amazon. The Exit Zero Filling Station is staffed with many fine people. And by Colleen Joyce. Kidding! Colleen is a sweetheart. John, her husband, I’m not sure about. But Colleen is awesome and loves to tell me
how much fun she had dancing her ass off at my Bruce Springsteen tribute show at Casablancas. (It was Billy Joel at Cabanas, but who am I to argue with a fan?) Ryan Krill (co-owner, Cape May Brewing Co.) stopped in with his wife, the lovely Kaysi (Casey, for the unpretentious). She was glowing, he had that mild glaze of anticipated panic, so it was no surprise when they told us they’re expecting their first child. I offered unsolicited advice (enjoy the good and bad times, don’t let them walk too soon, be prepared to have poop on you at all times). The brewing company is expanding, renovating and hiring. Hmmm… a beer column. Never has the old axiom “write what you know’ been more apt. Congrats guys! Last Monday at the Rusty Nail is the hottest I ever sang. And I’m not talking about how good I was. The heat was so intense Tim Joyce almost wore shorts. (Tim is my wing man in TNT Acoustic.) I mean, my sweat was sweating. Randy and Wendy Redelico (ding!) looked like they

walked through a car wash to get there. It was so hot I didn’t even eye-roll Tim for playing “Margaritaville” for the billionth time. Also hot? My wife, who sang with us and got the biggest applause of the day. Our Friday TNT Electric happy hour gig at Cabanas was, I guess, a Stump the Band show, with requests all over the map, from Iron Maiden to Barry Manilow. (How is there not an Iron Maiden-Barry manilow mash-up/ tribute band called Iron Manilow?) This trend continued into Saturday and our Cape May Distillery gig. On the bright side, my ragged voice was a nice fit for “The First Cut is the Deepest”, first made famous by Rod Stewart, then Sheryl Crow, to the neverending dismay of Cat Stevens, who wrote it. But that’s okay. He’s kind of an ass. I’m really looking forward to season two of The McCain Funeral. Exit Zero movie columnist Tom Sims is becoming my arch nemesis. Not only did he dismiss Ant-Man & The Wasp, last week he had the temerity to only moderately enjoy Mission Impossible: Fall Out, the greatest action movie ever made. What’s next? Two stars for Princess Bride? Blazing Saddles is overrated? Wanna kick my dog while you’re at it. (My metaphorical dog. I own two useless cats.) I challenge Tom to list his 10 favorite movies next week that I may mercilessly ridicule with impunity! (Life is much more interesting when you have an enemy. My life is very interesting.) Ran into Pete Baldwin outside Exit Zero Filling Station attempting to change the tire on his smokin’ 57 Porsche (aka Volkswagen kit car). He was cursing his wife Lorraine up and down for not breaking down closer to the air pump. Ok, that’s fake news. Pete could not have been more zen about it. They’ve also been two of my biggest supporters
September 6, 2018 over the last half-dozen years, attending most and maybe all of my Beatles and Billy Joel shows. But, really, can you blame them? Email of the Week: “Oh lord…” from Joe, in reaction to my, uh, bodily fluid column from a couple weeks back. What can I say, Joe? I’m a silver-tongued devil, licking all up on the words. My son Owen, who will be a high school senior by the time you read this, has done his dad proud, working at both the Tea Room at the Physick Estate and the Filling Station, washing dishes, cleaning up, making food. You know; the shit he never does at home. It’s almost as if money motivates him. Was editing my script for The Mostly Dead (October 25, Iron Pier Craft House) in the EZFS shop when I stumbled upon a disturbing bit of dialogue I had no recollection of writing. “I want to suck on your bon bons, m’lady.” Turns out I left my laptop open and unattended in the presence of Jack Wright for 30 seconds. This was ill advised. Of course, I kept the line. It’s a killer. I wasn’t sure about Jim from The Office as kick-ass CIA agent Jack Ryan, but that show looks pretty great. The idea of him as Captain America in 2010 (which almost happened) seemed laughable at the time. Now I think I’d like to see that movie. Lastly this week, please consider this your one-week warning to come to the awesome Cape May Brewfest event on Saturday the 15th at the Physick Estate. Not only will there be, duh, beer, along with other assorted goods and services, but my most excellent Beatles tribute band, Love Me Dudes, will be playing 3-6, headlining an all-day roster of talented local impresarios. Music and beer. Are there two better things? ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Kerry Kirk a consultant from Fairfax, VA who is enjoying a cup of coffee at Coffee Tyme before sadly going back home. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e need a science museum in Cape May. The thought came to me last week when I made a tiny error and turned on the electrical motorized vehicle one of my verminous great great grandsons purchased for me (I forget the manufacturer, but it featured a “T” – I am almost certain it was the new Model T Ford: that dreadful blowhard, Henry Ford, used to winter in Cape May and he always did say that one day charabancs would be powered by electrical current. Mind you, he also said they would be driven by wind power, or Little People on a treadmill, so I wouldn’t go ascribing any supernatural powers to the fool). Anyway, it had a button that promised that it might drive for me, and so I settled down in the back seat and demanded it take me to the library. Well, when I woke from my nap, I seemed to be in the Liberty Science Museum way up near the top of our fine state, dangerously close to that den of iniquity that people call New York City. I must say I had a fine old time, apart from a puzzling exhibition that seemed to be
all about snot and poop and such (I assume for the New York visitors, who are unnaturally fascinated by such things). When I was done, I stepped outside and whistled, and eventually an exasperated young lady retrieved my electrical Model T for me. Once home, which took less time with me in the driving seat — and was rather exciting, as the car can accelerate from zero to 60 in less time than it takes one to pump nervously into the plush driving seat — I decided we need a new museum. We had a Scientific
Museum back in My Day, of course: it contained amongst other things, Noah’s Ark (and the original dinosaurs who were aboard: none of your creationist blabber here), a distilling machine that turned tap water into the Elixir of Life (it was a dangerous invention, as one sip too much and one did not simply gain immortality, but turned into a wee babby), and the Dr Frankesntein’s machine (when there was a thunderstorm we invited a lucky guest to bring along a deceased pet, or relative, and we would wire them up and revive them for the amusement of the audience. I think this time we shall have a variety of wonders, including my patent pending “Here’s To Your Flat Earth, You Jackass” machine, whereby one of those maroons who claim the moon landing was fake (it was not: I was there) and the earth is a disc, is fired from a modified artillery piece and soon after achieves orbit. On the offchance they are not reduced to jelly, they will see the curve of this amazing planet and can telephone their idiot friends and assert that they were wrong, just prior to burning up in re-entry.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, grown-up time
fter Labor Day, the kids are back to school, or in my case, off to school, and Cape May belongs to the grownups. There are fewer kites and skateboards and the rhythm is a little different. Dare I say it? It’s glorious. Sure, there’s a touch of melancholy in an empty nest. My house is a little too quiet, what with no one to mock our date nights with Midsomer Murders or Columbo. There is also a surprising sense of liberation and the celebration of a job well done. Somewhere in this giddiness, I discover that the man with whom I have raised the finest humans on the planet bears a striking resemblance to the cute guy who first made me laugh in 1981. Freed from the marching band/ school/ soccer schedule, we can spend more time in Cape May. The Lion in Winter at Cape May Stage, through September 14, offers an interesting look at a long marriage — we may squabble, but we haven’t imprisoned each other yet. We can enjoy East Lynne’s Silent Sky, starting September 19, without
being accused of lecturing. Maybe we’ll check out the Revolutionary War encampment at Historic Cold Spring Village on September 8, unencumbered by a notetaker grumbling while taking notes for a school project. We can try our luck at the annual Froth Blowing Competition at the Ugly Mug on September 9 and raise money for the Police Athletic League. Sign-ups to join the competition start at 4pm and the event starts at 6, and there is a trophy for the winner — it’s been a long time since one of us took home a trophy. We may spend more time at restaurants
without macaroni and cheese on the menu. Shamone, with its chef-selected tapas menu, is at the top of our list to try, along with other fine dining spots which serve fish that still looks like fish. Or, we may have one of those giant lobster rolls from Quincy’s for lunch and skip dinner entirely. Perhaps we’ll take the ferry over to Delaware for no good reason, or the Grand Lighthouse Cruise at Miss Chris, on Saturday, September 15. The Full Moon Climb of the Lighthouse on September 24 sounds romantic, as does a long walk on the beach in the evening, with no sparklers and no destination in mind. We’ll block off some time without company. We’ll speak our conversational shorthand without anyone asking us to explain Fawn Hall or Ed Meese. We’ll dive into the ocean and frolic in the waves without keeping our heads on a constant swivel. We’ll wave at the adorable preschoolers still around and sympathize with their tired-looking parents. We’ll relish our FaceTime sessions with the kids. And, we may take the kite out — just the two of us.

Tom Sims reviews “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Equalizer 2”
here is no growth in comfort, and there is no comfort in growth. Some subjects are so complex it can take two separate movies to spark challenging conversations. BlacKkKlansman is the latest from Spike Lee, one of my favorite directors. He is as insightful as he is irreverent, and always fresh and timely. This film is a welcome addition to his catalogue. As always, he looks for a few moments to make you laugh, maybe even a few to make you cry — but always to make you think. The second film is The Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington in his first-ever sequel. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, a prolific director who worked with Washington on Training Day (2001). That film earned the actor his first Oscar for a leading role; he had won a supporting Oscar for his performance 10 years earlier in Glory (1990). Spike Lee’s film (or joint) is the (somewhat) true story of Ron Stallworth (played by the relative newcomer John David Washington). Stallworth is an African-American cop from Colorado who infiltrated the local
Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman is impressive Ku Klux Klan to uncover violence and illegal activity. How could an African-American infiltrate the KKK? With the help of a white cop in his squad (Adam Driver). Together the two discover hatred and bigotry so disgusting it’s astounding. And Lee took several opportunities to demonstrate how that same insanity is alive and well today. In The Equalizer 2, Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, a Jason Bourn-
esque character who is seemingly unbeatable and intuitively unfaltering. Part observer and part administrator of sometimes very painful justice, McCall resolves unsettlingly situations with swift and certain action. Critics can say there’s nothing innovative here — and they may be right insofar as the vigilante premise goes. But the action sequences are as sure-footed as its social commentary. In short, it’s not without depth. Points for that. Villainous supporting performances in both films are notable. That 70s Show’s Topher Grace plays the dangerous David Duke in BlacKkKlansman. Listening to him makes your stomach turn a little. And Lee pulled no punches putting forward Hollywood’s biggest embarrassment in its history as Duke screens supposedly legendary director D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation (1916) tribute to the KKK and Tinsel Town’s first feature film. Also noteworthy is the enemy of McCall, who is unnerving (not going to reveal who that is, you’ll have to see for yourself).

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My best friend likes this girl. He was trying to get up the nerve to ask her out all summer. There is a dance coming up at school and he is planning to ask her out when he sees her again. He has an elaborate plan about sitting with her at lunchtime. Anyway, last night she called me up and asked ME to the dance. I had to tell her that my friend liked her and was planning on asking her to it but she said she likes me. So, I said, “Okay. I’ll go.” Yes, I like her too, but now what do I do? Do I let her tell him she doesn’t like him or do I tell him? What a mess. — Dancing with the Star Dear Dancing The Answer Lady thinks it must have been quite a boost to the ego to find out
Wise answers to perplexing questions
you were the object of her affection and not your friend. What to do? Call the young lady back and tell her you need to tell your friend first before making the date final. Tell her the truth — that you like her but you can’t do that to a friend, at least not without a heads=up. She will protest that she was not even aware of your friend’s interest, which is a fair point. But before anything else proceeds, you need to ask your friend out for a burger. Go to Bella Vida and tell him what has transpired. It’s a touchy thing
and he may not take it well, but you will at least be doing the right thing. Dear Answer Lady My son is computer junkie. He is 15 and I think it’s time for him to start looking at girls — real girls. It’s time for him to start getting involved in school activities now that school is back in session. And it is definitely time for him to put that smartphone away and start making eye contact. We made great progress this summer, but I fear he will regress. What can I do to convince him that human contact beats virtual reality any day? — Worried Dad Dear Worried Human contact takes nerve, at least initially. The anonymity of the computer is very seductive. A regular family night out is the ticket. Depending on his and your skill level, try miniature golf at Sunset Beach Mini Golf. Think about joining the Cape May Tennis Club or Cape May National Golf Club. If neither of you is athletically inclined — birding is another option. As to girls — that will resolve itself.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
t’s time for migrating hawks to file past the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park — on average, nearly 60,000 migrating hawks, vultures, eagles and falcons are tallied each year. The platform is something of a social nucleus for local bird watchers and you are likely to find multiple authors present. Bring your Shorebird Guide, your Warbler Guide and Birds of Prey. I’ll be happy to autograph, having as I do power of attorney over Pete Dunne’s affairs. You’ll have to track down co-author Kevin Karlson, yourself. Why will I be there? Possibility. It lives just below the horizon and you never know what Ma Nature is going to serve up. If your bird identification skills are ill-defined, there will be plenty of experts to help you out. In September you can count on lots of osprey, a few northern harrier and daily sightings of bald eagle. On August 23, 6-8 were seen and that wasn’t even peak season. The best flights occur on days with winds coming from the north or northwest. But it’s fall in Cape May, migrating birds and but-
terflies are present every day. T If it’s hot, walk the short trail at Northwood Center in Cape May Point. The wet woods are a magnet for migrating warblers, vireos and thrushes, What’s a vireo? Go on a Cape May Bird Observatory field trip and find out. But when it’s hot, even canopy specialists come down to the pond to drink and bathe. Seated comfortably in the shade of the bird blind, you have a front row seat. After watching the show, go into the air con-

ditioned nature shop and log your sightings or get a canopy level view of foraging birds from the windows. Autumn in Cape May. It’s unrivaled on planet earth. Check it out and discover why Cape May is known as The Migration Mainline. New birds are arriving daily. Here today, gone tomorrow. So get a head start on the season, stop by the Hawk Watch and see why 70 million Americans have taken up bird watching. There’s no fee and all you need to do is pin the name to the bird to cast a spell of binding upon it. Over 400 species have been recorded in Cape May, and there are 10,000 species in the world. No single individual has seen them all. You can be first and it all starts with a trip to the Hawk Watch Platform, in the shadow of the Cape May Light. See you there under raptor filled skies. Mind the weather. When the weatherman starts talking about “cold fronts,” mark your calendar. Call in sick and head for Cape May Point. Tell your boss you are suffering from acute Northwest Wind Syndrom.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
MISTY is only one year old. She lived in a home with young children, cats, and another dog. Unfortunately, she did not do well with her canine sibling which caused her family to relinquish her to the shelter. She is playful, well mannered and very sweet but would be best in a house as the only pet. Give this beautiful lady another chance and adopt!
BELLA is a calm and well mannered lab mix. who loves to take walks and play fetch in the yard. Bella takes her time getting to know new people, but once she is comfortable with you, she is very affectionate. She would be an excellent choice for anyone looking for companionship with few demands. Adopt this beauty today!
ODEN loves to play ball in the yard, take long walks and snuggle up for love and affection. Oden is a very special dog with good canine manners and we are determined to find his forever happiness with the right family. Unfortunately, Oden needs to live in a household as the only pet or his wilderness caretakers would be his forever family. Adopt!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
ROXY is at the stage in the game where she wants nothing more than a warm bed and some yummy treats. Not all the hustle and bustle of life that kittens are looking for! Roxy just wants to be able to lay down and watch her stories! Can’t an old girl get a little bit of peace at this point in her life. Give this cutie a nice retirement and adopt today!
GIDGET was a homeless mother who was found on the streets begging for food to feed her babies. She was scooped up and taken to the shelter and was worried sick for days without her kittens and noone to care for them. Finally, a nice man brought Gidget’s babies to her and they have all been adopted. Now it’s mommy’s turn. Adopt today!
SIR-TIGER of the Cape is his name! A truly heroic cat that knows no fear. Not from the small children or the large canine. He is as feisty as he is majestic. A knight of legend. No mouse can hide or ball can roll that Sir Tiger shall not hunt and find! So if you’re looking for a regal kitty to run the household, look no further. Adopt Sir Tiger today!
