We’re proud to say that Exit Zero Filling Station super-server, Tisha Roussos, took first place while her boyfriend, Emir Santos, came in second. More photographs in next week’s issue. Clambake At Cape May VFW The 36th annual clambake fundraiser at the Cape May VFW was a great success — more than 400 people attended, despite blustery weather. The event featured a DJ, a 50/50 raffle and two auctions of local, donated items. But the real star of the show was the club’s oldest veteran, 93-year-old Ralph Gallaher. “Unfortunately he arrived after the photographer,” said club manager Tracy O’Neill. “But I was impressed he made it all, since he’s been in the hospital with pneumonia. He talked them into letting him come for a couple hours.” Go, Ralph!

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. It’s humid. Why do fitter people sweat more? Those who exercise
regularly have greater blood volume, which provides the fluid for sweating. Also, the bodies of fitter people recognize the need for cooling faster.

Local Landmark
Neil Peart, former drummer for the rock band Rush, has ridden the ferry from Lewes to Cape May. He called it “an enjoyable interlude of cool salt air [with] passing seabirds and boats, and even time for a nap on a bench on deck.”
The sand dollars you see washed up on the beach are white, but when living in the water they’re typically dark grey or green. They move via a fuzzy coat of spines and swallow sand to increase weight in turbulent water.
The Clubhouse was built in 1872 as a private gambling club for gentlemen. In 1972, when Cape May was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was one of 16 properties that helped the city make the cut. Five years later, Tom and Sue Carroll took it over, renovated it, renamed it The Mainstay Inn and turned it into the first B&B on the island. Today, current owners Pete and Esther Scalone continue the tradition of acclaimed hospitality.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 20. What rock group has four men that don’t sing?

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Amber Slawek from the Ugly Mug is up. How long have you been bartending? Six years. Favorite drink to make? A chocolate martini because I make them delicious. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers waste water, flag me down when they aren’t ready to order and when I have to retell the story of the mugs. Biggest tip ever? $100 from one person who handed me a $100 bill every time I walked by. Wow!

Cape May Brewing Co City to Shore - ABV: 7.80% The sexy hops in this Double IPA bring a wave of citrus, grapefruit, and other exotic fruits to your face. Not as dry as our usual hop-bombs, we leave a touch more of the body behind to bring out the juicier hop profile.
Collier’s Liquor Store Baron De Ley Tempranillo $14.99 This red wine from the Rioja region of Spain delivers mature fruit and round tannins. Perfect to drink with Tapas and various red meats.

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that grapes are in season. Did you know that wine has been made from grapes since 5,000 BC, it takes about 2.5 pounds of grapes to make one bottle of wine and you can get about 15,000 glasses of wine from an acre of grapes?

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
t was finally my turn this week. My turn to return the favor. My turn to answer the call. That call being, “Ter? Ter! TERRRRRRRR!” I bolted up out of bed as my wife screamed my name from the bathroom. (There’s a sex joke in there somewhere, but dammit I’m being serious!) While Cath’s problem wasn’t as, uh, fluid as the one I shared with you a few weeks ago (you’re welcome), it’s still distressing to see your partner in pain. (If I’m being honest, I was a little glad she wasn’t feeling well; usually when she screams my name she’s mad at me. But dammit, I’m being serious!) We navigated our way from the shower to the bedroom in the least sexy way possible, got dressed and went to the hospital where they gave her good drugs and diagnosed her with an extreme case of vertigo. (I always make the girls dizzy, but dammit I’m being serious!) All was well after a few scary hours (she was so scared she told me she loved me) and you can come see Cath at Exit Zero Filling Station, where she works between hospital stays, managing the restaurant, kicking ass
and taking names. For tables. (I’ll leave out the part where I warned her not to overdo it after a decade out of the workforce and warned Jack Wright not to over-schedule her after a decade out of the workforce because no one likes a petty husband.) Cathrine, please stay alive. We all love you and you’re the only one the cats like. I, like many of you, was shocked, SHOCKED, I say, to learn that the venerable Rio Station was up for sale. In a bit of Edward R. Murrow-like truth-seeking and muckraking, I investigated, texting Jim and
Rick Jr, the Rutherford offspring, and I quote, “??!!!??!??!??!??!” After sorting out what exactly in the hell I meant, Ricky told me the place has been on the market for some time and likely won’t be sold until at least after the Super Wal-Mart is complete. Either way, I hope they get that sweet $3.5m they’re asking for then lend me a bunch of it. Now, where do I collect my Pulitzer? Speaking of Rio Station (segues like this are a true art form), I’ve been hosting the karaoke there since 2005 (minus the couple of time they fired me, but, honestly, who hasn’t?) and I would like to see your faces over there on Fridays. The food is excellent, the service is impeccable (unless you get Crystal Ghrube, in which case it is merely peccable) and the crowd is welcoming-to-not-hostile most nights. And just think how great you’ll look and sound after your third beer! (Get an Uber.) In the Rio Station package you’ll find Richard Kassinger, a sweet old guy who’ll probably give me the business for calling him “sweet” and “old”, but he put up one of those

vaguely dark Facebook quotes last week (you know the ones; I may seem strong on the outside but inside I’m soft like a kitten) and, well, I just wanted him to know that someone is reading, and that a good cure for the blues is lots of karaoke. And alcohol. Labor Day Sunday I had the pleasure of singing to a gigantic crowd at the Rusty Nail. It was my third consecutive double and, well, the pipes are still copper, but they do rust up, at times. So it was gratifying to receive so much applause while not at my best. As I approach 50 and the one-quarter mark of my life (ha!), I try, though often fail, to appreciate these moments. It’s been my honor to perform for you these last 25 years. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep singing these Paul McCartney songs, but rest assured I’ll sing them as hard as I can for you. Speaking of Paul McCartney (for segue writing lessons, email me at undertow@exitzero.us), my killer Beatles band, Love Me Dudes, hope to see you this Saturday afternoon at the Physick Estate where we’ll be rocking the Cape May Brewfest from 3 til 6. We only play about six gigs a year but they’re the six gigs I most look forward to. It is my absolute pleasure to stand in front of Al Olivero, Terry Dougherty, Herb Moore and Sue Polcer and alongside ace co-vocalist Rachel Husta and deliver these amazing songs. All you need is love, and I love these dudes. I would like to apologize for the previous two non-sarcastic, sincere paragraphs. I would also like to apologize to those who pushed back against my (very mild) John McCain joke last week, but I’m not going to. Lots of gigs and shows coming up over the next six weeks. I’ll spare you details (because I’m running out of space) but won’t spare you the reminder to support any and all of my upcoming musical and theatrical productions by visiting Patreon.com/ terryoke1 and dropping in a buck. Trust me, we’re worth it. Exit Zero Filling Station
September 13, 2018 dinner manager and server Tish Roussos has a very unique tell. The more stressed she gets, the more she descends into baby talk. So if a leggy blonde approaches your table and says, “Huwwo, my name is Twish,” RUN! Mary Scott of the Lucky Bones Breakfast Crew confided in me that she likes our EZFS water bottles so much she almost nicked. Oh, Mary. Never confess to The Undertow columnist. (Actually, it was her friends that dropped the dime, and we’re very glad you enjoyed your breakfast. Lucky Bones is awesome.) Colonel Rich Nowakowski pulled in on his motorcycle for gas last week in his leather bomber jacket and driving goggles, looking for all the world like the Red Baron. Oddly enough, 15 minutes later, Snoopy came in for coffee and a Snickers. Arriving for my server shift last Wednesday a car honked and lo and behold, Randy and Wendy Redelico (ding!) were filling up and Wendy just had to have a “Terry hug”, which is like a regular hug only squishier. Randy was headed home and Wendy was headed back to the beach house where she’s hosting a bitching kegger! Lastly this week, it’s a bittersweet time of year (bitter for my wife, sweet for me) as we sent our boys off to school. Owen is, unbelievably, a senior at Lower Cape May. Jackson, perhaps more unbelievably, is a sophomore. And Henry, very believably, has started seventh grade. I mention this not because it is all that unique; all us parent-types have or will experience these milestones. I mostly mention it because so many of you have told me over the years that “I feel like I know you and your kids!” from the column. I have always found this very touching and, in fact, I’m a little verklempt as I write this. I also mention it because, even though this all makes me feel a little old, I can’t imagine how old it must make you feel. Love to all. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner are Mary Bieber from Douglassville, PA and Mary Bower from Bartow, PA who are retired and currently enjoying Cape May. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Elvis Presley. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
t is time for the much anticipated annual Beach Clean. Those of you who have an official “pirate’s share” in Cape May (from back when the city was sold for a hundred gold doubloons to the remaining crew from Captain Kidd’s crew, and every founding citizen was given one of the coins that would forever indicate that family’s ownership of the town) will already have your invite. We shall observe the usual routine: a round of single malt (I am fond of a 1964 Macallan: bottles of that gem change hands for $25,000 and I am fortunate indeed to have an entire case that washed up after the freighter carrying it accidentally sank off The Point after striking an unmapped mine left over from WW2, by a strange coincidence we will talk no further of), then assemble on the beach, with the Special Raking Machine. This isn’t the usual cosmetic raker. Oh, no. This beast digs six feet down, combing every grain of sand and extracting foreign objects, which are deposited onto a moving belt at the rear of the slow-moving machine, along which we are arranged with stout gloves, loot bags and boating hooks with
which to subdue still-moving treasure. Obviously, there are quantities of actual garbage which are responsibly sealed in biodegradable sacks collected by electric vans and driven in the dead of night to Wildwood, there to be placed on doorsteps where they are taken for gifts and happily received. But the real goods come from deeper. The watches (from 50c trinkets to million dollar Rolexes); the credit cards (we destroy them all, after taking a city tax of $1000, using the cunning machine one of our summer workers
constructed for us before being run out of town on a rail); the wallets (we gift one, with all the contents and the official identity of the original owner, to a homeless person, who, if they are smart and listen to our advice, can assume that person’s identity, car, home and family); the buried bags of silver dollars (those we honestly cannot fathom, but we assume that they are gifts from Poseidon, who is grateful for the small annual tribute we deliver kicking and screaming to his watery depths); and the diamonds (Cape May Diamonds are so valuable that we are paid handsomely by the world’s gem dealers to store and never release on to the market. We have something close to 20 tons in a basement on Stimpson Lane, currently). All of these things, plus the odd Faberge Egg, a patent for a machine that transmutes base metal to gold, the crude teleportation device (it works, but leaves a limb behind every time) and other marvels, we split evenly. Other, less useful finds, such as folks from Ocean City, hidden mob corpses and Nazi zombies, we simply bury again until such time as humanity can deal with them.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, take a spin on your bike
steady stream of bike riders adds color to Cape May’s summer streets. There are families headed to the beach, wearing towels around their necks and dangling buckets from their handlebars. Little kids test the limits of their training wheels or pedal furiously, ineffectually, towed behind a parent. Barefoot teenagers pass, hands free, homework free, using their geometry skills only to find a space on a crowded bike rack. Adult tricycles are loaded with groceries, or beach gear, or grandchildren. The stream dries up after Labor Day. The streets are quieter, and there is plenty of space on the bike racks. It’s a great time to take a spin. All summer, the bike has been a necessity. Now, it becomes a pleasure. You can ride without a destination in mind. There’s room to maneuver a surrey. You can pause at the Cove without causing traffic. There is — or will be — a breeze. You can pedal at a steady clip and get some real exercise, perhaps even enough to burn off a summer’s worth of boardwalk food. Riding your
bike is a great way to improve your health. It’s low-impact exercise. Although it’s easy to do, it gets you out of your head because you have to concentrate on the road. It boosts your mood because you get outside. It helps you feel connected to your community because you discover new spaces. And, if you let it, it can boost your self esteem, because although we know that covering five miles on foot is the caloric equivalent to 14 miles on a bike, 14 sounds better. If you’re going to ride regularly for exercise, consider adjusting your bike so that it fits properly. Google “basic bike fit” — 20
minutes of adjustment can spare you some aches and pains. You may want to purchase a new bike — your nephew’s hand-me-up is fine for the occasional ride, but not if you’re going to be riding for fitness. To avoid knee pain, for example, your seat should probably be higher than you think - too high to place both feet flat on the ground. If you’re thinking about serious riding with cleats and clips, consult an expert at your local bike shop. And please, wear your helmet. Cape May County is expanding its bike lanes. The Cold Spring Bike Path (starting at Sandman Boulevard and Sally Marshall Crossing) and Middle Township Bike Path (starting at the Cape May County Park and Zoo) are now connected, giving you more than ten miles of smooth biking. (Just remember — you have to pedal back.) You may encounter strollers and joggers, but often, your only companion will be a monarch butterfly. Stop at the Cold Spring Brewery or plan to visit Hawk Haven Winery for charcuterie along the way. Next week: Run the Vineyards

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady We have a large house on the island and frequently have visitors. My wife and I go to great pains to prepare meals, served on a rustic table on the patio looking over the sunset on the bay. The problem is we recently had a guest, whom we adore, who insisted on making dinner for us. We told her multiple times we do not like people in our state-of-art kitchen and have already planned an extensive menu for everyone. Still, she insisted until it got testy. She only relented because she was dependent on us to drive her around shopping for said dinner. This is not the first time this has happened with other guests. What’s up with that? Don’t you think it is incredibly rude? — In A Snit
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Snit The Answer Lady wants to know what she can do to get an invitation to these sunset dinners and promises to never ask to use your kitchen. The issue is not kitchen envy. It is one of competition. You are high need-achievers and surround yourselves with like-minded, which is great on a cursory level but when they move in, they want to be the alpha dog. Like all good trainers, you must instill good manners and be firm — as you have been. Is it
exhausting? Yes. To restore your creative powers, a nature walk is in order as well as time spent at Cape May Point State Park. Dear Answer Lady My step-daughter came to visit last week with her toddler, newborn and husband. She then informed me that her brother (different father), his wife and their three children would be coming the next day and staying overnight and “was that okay?” Well, what was I to say? And how should I handle this in future? — Reluctant Hostess Dear Reluctant The next time she comes down, simply ask her, “Is anyone else coming?” Decide at that time if that is okay with you. You might want to stress to your step-daughter that you and her father would like to spend time with her and her family not have it dissipated with other family members. It sounds as though you need to visit A Place on Earth and get yourself some fine bath salts and handmade soaps and indulge yourself as a reward for your stellar hospitality.

The Movie Column
A
Tom Sims (after being prodded by another EZ columnist) delivers his top 10 of all time...
pparently, EZ columnist Terry O’Brien has asked me to list my top 10 movies of all time. And although my better judgement tells me to avoid the undertow, not catch it… I guess I should respond. Before I get to my top 10 movies, let’s talk about Mr O’Brien’s comments about what he thought was my lackluster response to Mission: Impossible – Fallout. He calls it “the greatest action movie ever?” Really… “ever?” You know, ever is a really long time. If a movie gets high marks on a tomatometer, it doesn’t mean we unconditionally accept canned dialogue and overused formulas. It’s better than average summer eye-candy — sure it cost $178m to make but that only makes it expensive candy. Like I recommended, grab a popcorn and find a cozy theater to have fun with this flick. Anyway, here’s that top 10: The Yes Men Fix the World Gonzo journalists expose cover-ups, corruption and otherwise big corporate fraud using the best (and most hilarious) pranks ever. We fea-
The classic To Kill A Mockingbird tured it about 10 years ago at the Cape May Film Festival. Little Miss Sunshine That is one messed-up family. Last dance scene is unforgettable. Groundhog Day Sure it’s quirky but there’s something about it. Who hasn’t experienced a groundhog day once in a while? Another Earth Outstanding indie — exceptional storytelling, very subtle and yet very profound. True Grit (Coen Brothers version): Remarkable remake with lots of… well…
grit. The Shawshank Redemption Not sure anyone can argue here, right? The Sixth Sense A masterpiece of suspense from M. Night Shyamalan, clearly his best work Toy Story All three of them. I know, I know. That means this is a list of 12. But not really. Toy Story represents the best trilogy Hollywood has ever created. It’s a Wonderful Life Go ahead, call me sentimental. To Kill a Mockingbird This is still my favorite book too. Aticus Finch faces a true Mission: Impossible. Wait, what’s that? Not one action flick? Dare I ask? What’s in your top 10, Mr O’Brien? Give me yours, then give me your top 10 that doesn’t include explosives or comic book heroes. And I’ll give you this: you can include animation (after all, I did). I would say you can include a holiday movie like I did, but I’m not sure I can accept Die Hard. On second thought, simply have at it. I can’t wait to read it...

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his column is supposed to focus upon birds, but when it comes to migration, gram for gram, nothing can out migrate the mighty monarch, an insect weighing less than a legalsized envelope, yet millions of these welter weight travelers will migrate from New England to Mexico City. Cape May sits astride the monarch migration mainline. Sometime during the last week in September or first week in October an avalanche of gossamer-winged insects will migrate through here. It’s a National Geographic special on our doorsteps. Some years are better than others. Cape May Bird Observatory has been monitoring the monarch migration for over a decade. A good place to watch the parade is Cape May Point State Park. I have counted more than a hundred passing insects a minute. The evening after a big flight the insects roost on the branches of shade trees that are protected from the wind and are positioned to catch the first rays of morning sunlight. Wings folded, the trees look like they are
covered in dead leaves but with the touch of morning sun, the animals open their wings and the trees bloom with orange blossoms. By noon they will be gone, heading off over Delaware Bay to continue their epic journey. Our task is more simple. All that is required of us is to marvel and perhaps plant some milkweed, the butterfly’s host plant. The biggest monarch migration I ever witnessed was in 1977. The air was so filled with insects they frustrated my hawk-counting efforts. The reason I know it was the
biggest is because the bike lanes along Sunset Boulevard were smothered in monarch wings, the carnage left over from collisions with passing cars. I have not seen such a tragedy since, so I conclude the migration was one for the record books. So I guess there is one more thing you can do to help migrating monarchs. Drive slowly and brake sensibly. Brake for an insect? Sure, I do. Check your rear view, first. Not everyone can be counted upon to read this article. Watch the weather channel. When the forecast is for northwest winds, head for the Point. Where are the roost trees? Sorry, it’s a secret. Just follow the insects. I once had some screwball badger me for the roost site locations because she wanted to integrate the butterflies in her lampshade designs. No, sadly, I’m not making this up. So marvel away but let the butterflies fly. As for birds, they leave monarchs alone. The diet of milkweed makes monarchs near toxic to birds. One misguided taste and they leave monarchs alone for life.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
SISSY is a 9 month old black lab mix who was found wandering and brought to the shelter. She is a social girl who is eagerly learning new skills to make her transition to a home easier. She loves to run in the yard chasing toys and has beautiful leash manners. Sissy would be a wonderful addition to any family. Adopt today!
COTY is a 10 year old chow who found his way to the shelter when his owner passed away. He was severely matted when he arrived at the shelter so his look has changed dramatically. Coty looks like a shorn lamb! Coty is quiet and polite in manner. He would make an excellent companion in an adult household that is predictable and calm.
TITAN is a beautiful brindle pitbull mix. He is just one year of age and comes from a loving home. He was surrendered to the shelter because his owner was ill, but the family had great affection for him. He is well mannered in the home, enjoys car rides and is house trained. Titan has a lot of energy and enjoys running in a fenced yard. Adopt today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
SABLE loves to be petted and given attention. He would love the chance to catch the occasional mouse for you, or if you don’t like that, he could keep your feet warm in bed instead! Although Sable requires a special diet, it’s not a big deal. Please come and say hello to Sable. He deserves a happy home just like every other kitty!
KITTY-KAT has been in the same home for 7 years. Unfortunately her owners decided that she could no longer stay. Kitty likes other animals but prefers the company of adults. At her age young ones can be stressful. So if you are looking for an independent kitty that will hang out and still play, then Kitty Kat is the perfect kitty for you. Adopt today!
SIR-TIGER of the Cape is his name! A truly heroic cat that knows no fear. Not from the small children or the large canine. He is as feisty as he is majestic. A knight of legend. No mouse can hide or ball can roll that Sir Tiger shall not hunt and find! So if you’re looking for a regal kitty to run the household, look no further. Adopt Sir Tiger today!
