Harvest Brew Fest After a week of dreary weather, the sun came out just in time for the annual Harvest Brew Fest, held on September 15 on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. There was plenty of local food, local artisans and, naturally, lots of good local beer! We were proud to have two of Exit Zero Filling Station’s own on site — Terry O’Brien performing with his Beatles tribute band as well as Doug Marandino selling delicious honey from his Cape May Honey Farm store. Cheers to a great community event!

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What does ensorcell mean? To enchant or fascinate someone, as in: It’s so easy to be ensorcelled by a Cape May sunset, especially in the fall, when the colors are particularly vibrant. Or: I’m ensorcelled when I learn new words!

Errol Flynn, that dreamy American movie star best known for his portrayal of Robin Hood in the 1938 production of The Adventures of Robin Hood, reportedly stayed at the Spanish-style Mission Inn on New Jersey Avenue in the 1940s.
Bladderwack may sound like some type of onomatopoeia, but it’s a type of brown seaweed with air-filled pockets — aka, poppable bubbles — that help it float. It’s been used to treat everything from acid reflux to constipation to thyroid issues.
The John Wesley Inn on Gurney Street was built in 1869 as part of the Stockton Hotel campus. The Stockton, a behemoth that could accommodate 475 guests, was demolished in 1911, but its auxiliary cottages — including the John Wesley — thankfully remained. It represents the Carpenter Gothic style, popular for its fanciful details. Today, there’s a high romance factor in each room, all of them complete with lace window treatments and a fireplace.

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
P
retty much at the end of every summer, I ramble on about how much I look forward to the fall. It’s a little piece of Cape May cheerleading I like to do, reminding people that, although the balmy nights of summer are over, there is so much more to look forward to. Many years, I have written those words with a sense of regret for the summer just passed. Not this year. I really AM glad summer is over. I can’t put my finger on it, but something felt off. It wasn’t just that me and the rest of the EZ gang were overwhelmed with opening (and running) the beast called Exit Zero Filling Station... with all of the employee-related drama that goes with it. I spoke with many other business owners who said there was something a little strange about this past season. I’m being vague here because everyone else was, too. Was it the appalling state of civic affairs in this country permeating the Cape May bubble? Was Mercury in retrograde for three months? Is there an alien invasion of our planet impend-
ing? I don’t know, but, hell’s bells, Halloween and pumpkins, sweaters and boots have never felt so alluring. Bring it on! Once again, Cape May has lost another big character. I was so sad to hear of the passing of Joe Lotozo at the young age of 64. I started to get to know Joe shortly after I moved here — the Lotozo family of Joe, Sue, Eliza and Bela were my neighbors on Stimpson Lane. If you’ve eaten at the best Cape May restaurants over the last few decades, there’s an excellent chance you’ve
³
benefited from Joe’s skills. He enjoyed a long and successful career cooking at places like the Bayberry (before it was the Blue Pig Tavern), Mad Batter, The Ebbitt Room, Café Promenade (now Harry’s), Mansion House and Washington Inn. The man was a natural in the kitchen. My friend Mark Chamberlain put it better: “Joe was the man in the culinary world in the 80s and 90s here. His star was shining bright. Everyone loves him.” Unlike my mermaid of a wife, I’ve no love for the water. The thought of jumping off the ferry (as people do every year in Escape the Cape) gives me nightmares. So I’m in awe of good people like Chuck McPherson, a local volunteer fireman who was first on the scene when a man leapt from the West Cape May bridge last week. Not just first on the scene, but first into the water to help the poor guy, who thankfully survived. Kudos also to the construction workers of Northstar Marine, who helped in the rescue of the 54-year-old man. Happy fall, y’all...

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Helen Linney from The Ebbitt Room is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to make? An old fashioned. It’s a classic drink that I take pride in making and making it well. We can attest to that! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers ask me if this is my “real job.” Biggest tip ever? $200 from one person. Thanks Helen! Always a pleasure.

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that apples are in season. Did you know that apples are actually part of the rose family, just like pears and plums, and that there are more than 7,500 varieties of apples grown around the world. It would take you more than 20 years to try them all if you ate one a day!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
W
ew, lad. What a week. In terribly exciting news I hope you’ll find mildly interesting, or at least non-hostile, my new band, The Credibles, makes it world debut Saturday at 8pm at Cabanas. The Credibles are built from parts from my other bands, Love Me Dudes, The Strangers and Ten Eddy Drive (which is not really “my” band, but in the interests of brevity… crap, too late) plus one new component — Sue Polcer and Al Olivero of the Dudes and Strangers, Dr David Bee from T.E.D. (have to tell you, when a guitar solo comes up, it’s pretty cool to yell “Take it around Dr Bee!”) and newcomer Jon Branca, whose main talents are playing bass and being available for gigs. Our playlist runs the gamut from, yes, Beatles and Billy Joel (but less than you’d think), to a slew of awesome 80s and 90s hits and curiosities, all the way up to Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. Sung by me. Which is pretty ridiculous, but here we are. We’re pretty jazzed and, though we may not be perfect Saturday night (as of this writ-
ing we’ve had one), I can guarantee you I’ll be giving it 110%, and I won’t accept anything less from my band, who won’t accept giving anything less. (And yes, I know 110% isn’t a thing.) Exit Question: Should my next band, a Prince Tribute, be fronted by a fat, bald, nearly 50-year-old white guy? Discuss. Equally exciting... this Sunday at 8pm, Love Me Dudes takes the Cabanas stage for a “surprise” Beatles Night. We usually host these shows in January and February (and still will in 2019), but Cabanas GM Payton
Bowman, in his infinite wisdom, thought a fall show would be a good idea, and who am I to argue? Me, Al, and Sue, along with Terry Dougherty, Herb Moore and Rachel Husta, are completing our fourth year together and getting tighter than a snare drum. As you know (because you read this column every week, right?) we played the Harbor Brew Fest last Saturday and it may be the best we’ve ever sounded. Kudos to Sea Shore Sound (Joe McLaughlin and Tom Hogan) who had it dialed in. It’s the best on-stage mix we’ve had since they ran the show last year. Thanks, guys! (Cabanas sound man John Fullerton, your mission, should you choose to accept it…) Old School, a band comprised of active and retired educators, preceded us and warmed up the crowd. I was finally able to give a face-to-face apology to Rick Ferrante for a last-minute cancellation a few years back. I’m not sure he was mollified (I use fancy words sometimes), but he was gracious and that’s really all you can ask for. Tuesday was the first official meeting

of The Credibles. We ran down about 25 songs with no major hiccups. This is not remarkable. Rehearsing in an optometrist’s office, that’s pretty remarkable. My favorite Facebook comment: “Um, are you guys playing Human League at my eye doctor’s office?” Yes. Yes, we were. And judging by the thumbs-ups we got from various passersby, we were doing it pretty well. After singing Monday and with no gigs scheduled until Saturday, I let it fly at rehearsal, proudly earning myself a raw throat in service to the rock gods. So, naturally, Congress Hall asked if we could play The Brown Room on Wednesday. “Yes!” I yelled as loudly as I could and TNT Acoustic played Cape May’s Living Room. While happy to have the gig it was a drag we only got it because Maddie Hogan, an immense talent (ahem, American Idol, ahem) and genuine firecracker, wasn’t feeling well. Get better, Maddie! The world’s a better place if you’re singing in it. Thursday was the Exit Zero Filling Station. where I’ve kind of been splitting my time between the restaurant and the gift shop and I’ve met so many readers of my column who are so nice that I’m getting a little sick of it. Don’t they know I’m the local jerk? Guh! (Of course, I appreciate everyone who takes the time to share a kind word. Though I’m still kind of a jerk.) As ever, my week was bookended by gigs at the Rusty Nail with Tim Joyce (TNT Acoustic). Monday was noteworthy because TNT mascots Sue Polcer and Rebecca Sundstrom attended the first of their three shows of the week (what do you call TNT groupies… Dynomites?), my sister Erin Beaver, her husband Larry and assorted hangers-on arrived in town (it was the first we’d seen each other since our brother Greg passed, which neither of us realized until I started singing “Your Song” and choking back tears of sadness for my brother followed by tears of rage for my sister for making me choke back tears of sadness
September 20, 2018 for my brother), and that it was, I believe, the sixth time we started playing outside, only to move our gear inside due to the weather, and after I strongly suggested we set up inside. Why does no one listen to Terry? Sunday was noteworthy because I was shredded from my Beatles show (I was doing okay until “Helter Skelter” because you can’t sing that shit halfway) and had no idea how I was going to get through this gig. Fortunately the Mogcks were there to chew up most of our time by either heckling us (Diane) or requesting 72 songs we don’t know (Herb). Also noteworthy; another appearance by my wife, Cathrine, who joined us for a song and wouldn’t leave the stage. “I’m helping you!” she said, elbowing me out of the spotlight and calling out songs to Tim. “Won’t you let me help you?” This is why I keep work and life separate. Of course. It’s always a pleasure to sing with Cath, though I could have done without the crowd yelling “LOOK INTO HER EYES!” as we sang together. (In my defense, she’d had some garlic.) Thank you Cath and Tim for dragging my withered husk through another show. Lastly this week, I often reflect with no small amount of appreciation about the wonderful people my silly little karaoke business has brought into my life. Regina Scott was among the best of them. I consider myself lucky that her husband, Frank, a gifted photographer, wandered into Terry O’ke one night in 2005 and many, many nights after, often with Regina in tow, equal parts impressed and embarrassed by her husband, as most wives are, but always smiling. Over dozens of Beatles and karaoke shows we developed our own strong friendship, she often, but not always, sparing the rod. Last Friday, her four-year battle came to an end. She fought. She fought well. Now she can rest. Frank, Regina (Gina, Jr), Maribeth, Brian, I wish you peace. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Juan Herrera from Hatillo, Puerto Rico who is a cook and was working when we ambushed him. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? His wife. Aaah, what a guy.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
f you see gaggles of confused but curious Shoebies wandering around our fair city, worry not! They are not the usual post-season strays, awaiting tranquilizer darts and nets, and a return to Philly in crates. No, these are Special Shoebies (though I know, I know, ALL Shoebies are special in their own way, bless their hearts). These are Home Grown Organic Cage-Free Shoebies! What is this marvel, you ask? Well, the problem is, during the season we have an excess of visitors, and then the blighters vanish overnight! We are forced to close our businesses, shut down our saltwater taffy mine, and return our legions of beautiful, sullen Eastern European youths to the cryogenic storage facility under Congress Hall. We have over the years tried all kinds of clever marketing devices: our “Come and See Cape May in Fall: It’s Cold, But Not Often Fatally So!” poster campaign was, unaccountably, a flop. And our incentive to pirates, to shanghai affluent tourists from ferries and cruise ships that strayed too close to the shore,
and gently release them in Cape May, was not the success that it should have been: typically, they would fill up on pancakes and then bolt for freedom, pausing only for candy every few yards. Obviously, chasing them down with dogs was fun, but hardly conducive for good reviews on that Yelper thing. So, one late night at Iron Pier, we hit on a plan. “Why don’t you?” slurred Bill Gates, who vacations here with the strange Zuckerbeg fellow, and some surly lads who seem to be from Giggle. “Why don’t we make
our own Shoebies?!” Well, how we laughed! And how we thrashed Bill with our canes! Afterwards, though, I thought: “the chap has a point…” And so, over the past few seasons we have been surreptitiously taking DNA samples from the crème de la crème of our visitors: a smudged wine glass here, a swift stab from my walking cane there, a nip from Young Albert … though that latter carries the real risk of the target catching some awful canine maladies. The laboratory under the D’Catur Mansion has been busy and having lots of fun. And now we have our first batch of genuine, cloned Shoebies! We made a few genetic tweaks here and there, of course, to curtail some of the more annoying traits: they are less likely to stop abruptly on the sidewalk every few paces and yell, “Say! How CUTE is that?!?!”, for example. We, of course, cloned the originals’ credit cards, cut new car keys, and photocopied their dollar bills, which I am sure will not pose any problems further down the line.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, running this fall
all is a great time to become a runner. Cooler weather makes it more pleasant. The changing leaves give you something pretty to look at, and their crunch underfoot is satisfying. For morning runners, the end of daylight savings time is cause for celebration. Because we’ve been programmed since kindergarten to work a little harder when school starts, the return of autumn makes it easier to train consistently. Experts advise the best way to get yourself to stick to a running routine is to sign up for a race. There’s a theory that every runner is running away from something, like stress, or age, or grief. Statistically, more people run when there is a crisis in the world, but many also run toward something, like a natural high or an extra piece of Halloween candy. Some want to be able to outrun a hurricane or a toddler; others just enjoy running. Once you get going, you rediscover what your younger self once knew it’s fun to run. It’s even more fun to run in a race, and Cape May offers some that are
especially fun. The Run the Vineyards race at Cape May Winery is already sold out. This popular event on September 23 offers runners a flat 5k route that finishes in the vineyard and includes a souvenir wine glass. Sample the course with a run from the winery to Historic Cold Spring Village and sample the atmosphere with a Friday happy hour visit to the tasting room. Their tapas menu is full of extra calories to fuel your run, including lavender truffle honey. There is live music and this year’s rainy summer means a late harvest, so the vineyard looks pretty.
The Hallowed Half on October 27 at 7:30am is a new race this year. The people at Cape May Running Company — local running experts — and Cape May Brewing Company are organizing this fun event, which will wind its way past the Emlen Physick Estate in Cape May, past the farms of West Cape May, around the lighthouse and Cape May Point before finishing up on Beach Avenue. Bring your friends and wear your costume. Sign up at capemayrunning. co/hallowedhalf. Fall is a good time to think about the other type of fall, too. Those pretty leaves are slippery and icy pavements are on the way. Falls are common even among the young and fit, and changes like weight loss, new medications or pregnancy can increase their likelihood. If you fall while running, don’t hop right back up because you’re embarrassed. Take a moment to assess yourself. Do some first aid. See a doctor if you’re over 60, if you black out or vomit, if you cut yourself and need a tetanus booster, or if you’re still in pain after a week.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I belong to a group of about 20 beachgoers. At the end of the summer, we get together for our annual picture. I do not get along with one of the wives, who is new to the group. She married a man who divorced a few years ago. Since she has come on board, the dynamic has changed. I called last week to find out when our photo was taking place only to be told it was taken. This woman was put in charge of organizing the photo and left us out, claiming she “couldn’t get a hold of us.” This is such a slap in face. How far do you think I should press this without looking petty? — Left Out Dear Left Out The Answer Lady’s first question is – why did the others allow that to happen?
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Why didn’t they insist on waiting until you were all together? Sounds as though this woman has bullied her way into relevance. Unfortunately, you and your spouse must decide to wage a war counteracting her, or disassociate yourself from them. It is, after all, a beach activity, not work-related. Maybe the best thing is to continue enjoying the beach but distance yourself from the group. Sometimes The Answer Lady has devilish thoughts. You could Photoshop yourselves into the photo and submit it to
Exit Zero. Or... take a Zen moment. Go to the Ugly Mug. Dine al fresco and enjoy that lobster dinner they offer and fahgetaboutit. Dear Answer Lady I hosted a barbecue over Labor Day and offered the usual — dogs, burgers, shrimp wrapped in bacon, corn and salads. But I was aggravated when two of the couples informed me they were vegetarian. I would have made a pasta dish or some other alternative. Don’t you think they should have let me know this? — Embarrassed Dear Embarrassed Clearly, they were okay with making-do and enjoying all the other foods you had and thought that would be enough. It is very thoughtful of you, as hostess, to want to accommodate all your guests but you cannot do that if you are not informed. You need to relax and stop beating yourself up for something beyond your control. Did everyone have a good time? The Answer Lady surmises that is a resounding YES. Take yourself to Harry’s. Order a margarita and enjoy the ocean view.

The Movie Column
A
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”
s I contemplated a movie to watch for this column, there was this gnawing feeling that I’d seen a movie recently but didn’t review it. Then there was a song in my head. “Do you hear the drums, Fernando?” It hit me! Oh my, in a frenzy of movies I’ve seen this summer, I saw Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the sequel to the 2008 musical! How could I have forgotten? Well... there’s a reason for that… in that it wasn’t all that memorable. Like cotton candy that gives a quick sensation as it hits your tongue but evaporates and leaves little trace of having ever been there, so goes this movie. My daughter, Julia, really pushed me to see this film, but she wanted me to first go online and check out The Onion’s YouTube review. It’s hysterical — but I am NOT the curmudgeon that commentator Peter K. Rothenthal is talking about! In the review, he says, “[This is a film] you can either choose to enjoy for the perfectly fine piece of entertainment it is, or live out the rest of your exis-
If you like ABBA, you’ll love it. tence as a miserable killjoy.” It’s just that I have a healthy suspicion of movies with expansive star-studded casts. This one has it! And it’s not like everyone in that cast didn’t show up and deliver. They did for sure (okay, maybe Pierce Brosnan mumbled through a few lyrics and barely shuffled his way around the dance sequences — but, hey, I’m not complaining!). In the first film, Donna (played by Meryl Streep) has a daughter, Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried), who is getting married.
Donna doesn’t know who the father is, so Sophie invites the three men who could be her dad to the wedding. Merriment ensues. In the sequel, Donna has passed and Sophie is re-opening the hotel her mother loved so much. Flashbacks explore the confusing past concerning Sophie’s father with younger versions of all the main characters — and some new but familiar faces to the mix. Like Cher and Andy Garcia. The film was funny, frivolous and, if you like ABBA music (which I do), it will not disappoint. It actually tried to get a little moving, so props for that. It’s just that in the end... (very cautiously I think of Julia as I write this) it would have made a great Netflix Original. But I am NOT a killjoy! It was fun to watch. The production values werehigh with lots of singing and dancing and all that! It was… ummm… effervescent dammit! So there. You’re not going to label me “your grumpy old man,” kid! Special thanks to Aly, Sean and Jacquie for the birthday present screening.

Bird Droppings
M
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ute swans might well be the natural world’s greatest ambassadors. That sound you hear is the wailing of dedicated birders who despise the things. Why? They are not native. They consume the aquatic plants our waterfowl depend upon and, frankly, it’s avocationally fashionable to be disdainful of swans. Yet, when non-birders mount the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park, they are immediately riveted by the sight of the 40 or so swans clustered in Bunker Pond. And rightfully so, the birds are big, beautiful and easy to observe. Unlike hawks which are often mere specs in the stratosphere, swans are right in your face. Several years ago I was given first-hand insight into the power of swans. My neighbor Michelle, an antique dealer whose interest in birds goes no farther than drumsticks and feather dusters, was enticed to accompany me on a brief outing with the promise I’d show her a bald eagle. As I set up my spotting scope on the local eagle nest, Michelle screamed with visceral delight at the sight of
swans in an adjacent pond. “They’re beautiful,” she said. “Yes,” I agreed, “and here’s the eagle.” She never did look at the eagle but three years later she still talks about the swans. Swans are so arresting, they even stop traffic. The other day, heading north of Goshen on Rt 47, I saw a line of cars crawling southbound with an emergency vehicle at the head of the line. A mute swan, apparently unable to fly, was ambling along just ahead of the truck’s bumper. As New Jersey Audubon’s
Birding Ambassador, it occurred to me that I might intercede, but decided against it. There is nothing more single-minded than 40lbs of mute swan. Mute swans are native to Europe and were imported here to serve as ornamental centerpieces of well-landscaped yards complete with ornamental ponds. The wild birds we see today are ferals whose ancestors escaped their gilded lives. Along the Atlantic coast they are found from New Hampshire to Virginia. In winter they concentrate where they find open water, including Bunker Pond and Lake Lilly, and their feeding action and body heat keep water from freezing, thus serving many smaller waterfowl species. Highly territorial, they are also sometimes introduced into golf course water hazzards in an effort to discourage Canada geese. If you go to the platform to see the birds and want to impress the birding crowd with your swan savvy, know that the male is called a cob and the female a pen. I don’t know why and frankly the sexes share the same plumage. You can’t tell them apart in the field.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
MARCY is about 6 months old and arrived at the shelter as a stray. Although she is playful and friendly, she has not had any training. Marcy will make a good pet for someone who has the time and energy for training. She is very young and good natured. She will be best placed in an adult household or one with more mature children. Adopt today!
LEO is a frisky 1 year old boy who arrived at the shelter with his litter mate (Ollie). Their owner was no longer able to take care of them and was heartbroken to have to leave them at the shelter. By looking at his pictures, you can see he enjoys playing with toys in the yard and already knows a number of behavior cues. Adopt Leo today!
TITAN is a beautiful brindle pitbull mix. He is just one year of age and comes from a loving home. He was surrendered to the shelter because his owner was ill, but the family had great affection for him. He is well mannered in the home, enjoys car rides and is house trained. Titan has a lot of energy and enjoys running in a fenced yard. Adopt today!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
DALI came to the shelter with her sister Lilly. They had a great home but their owner was moved into a home and could no longer take care of them. Dali is an indoor kitty and very sweet. Although she is making lots of new friends at the shelter, Dali is longing for a real home. Someone special, like you, to scoop her up and take her home. Adopt today!
CAESER is three and half years old and came to the shelter with his sister Drewcilla. They have had a rough life and their owner couldn’t afford to take care of them anymore. Caeser is a bit shy so he would love to stay with his sister, because she makes him feel safe. So if you’re wanting to save to souls, stop by the shelter and adopt today!
NEWMAN was brought into the shelter in such a rough condition. It’s the reason why his tail is so short. Newman has seen some rough winters, but last winter was the worst. And then he was finally found! Warm beds and toys and cuddles. So many cuddles! Now all Newman needs is a nice family to show him what love is like! Could this be you? Adopt!
