Premier Of “The Shuck” On September 20, The Shuck had its world premiere at Cape May Stage. Written by Cape May native Shawn Fisher, the play tells the story of a woman who has spent her life on the deck of an oyster boat and, after her son is lost at sea, must now confront the truth about her family. Playing the lead role is four-time Emmy winner Kim Zimmer, best known for her work as Reva Shayne on Guiding Light. Appropriately, oysters from Cape May Salt Oyster company were served at the preopening party in the theater’s courtyard. The show runs through November 9.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Do plants feel pain? According to biologist Daniel Camovitz, they can feel themselves being cut or eaten... but they don’t have pain receptors, just pressure receptors. In other words: Don’t feel too badly about mowing your grass.

Local Landmark
As the Wall Street Journal once put it, Pete Dunne is the “bard of birding.” He’s written 20 books on the subject and brought international attention to Cape May as a birdwatching destination. He’s also an Exit Zero columnist!
It’s hawk migration time in Cape May! Look out for the peregrine falcon, commonly spotted from the Hawk Watch Platform overlooking Bunker Pond. It’s the fastest animal on the planet, reaching speeds of more than 200mph during dives.
The Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park two years ago celebrated its 40th anniversary. Ranked among the best hawkwatching spots in the world, the platform is homebase for Cape May’s annual hawk count, which kicked off on September 1. It’s a three-month affair run by Cape May Bird Observatory in which biologists work from dawn to dusk tallying migrating hawks from 18 species, while other CMBO naturalists stationed on the platform educate the public.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 20. What is the building that you leave without ever having entered?

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Donnie Piacentine from The Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? 11 years. Favorite drink to serve? The coldest bottle of beer in the cooler. What’s your bartending pet peeve? There’s two. When a customer waves their hand in my face, (especially when i’m already making eye contact,) and when they yell their drink order when i’m helping other customers. Both valid...both annoying. Biggest tip ever? $500.

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that brussel sprouts are in season. Did you know that they really are named after Brussels, the capital of Belgium and in 2014, Stuart Kettell pushed a brussel sprout up Mount Snowdon with his nose for charity. The climb took four days, 22 hours and used 20 sprouts.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
M
an, I thought last week was busy, then this week happened. Where to begin? Perhaps the beginning. We started off on Monday at the Phillies game, where the LCMR High School and RMT Middle School bands were part of a tri-state marching band competition. My boys Owen and Henry participated, which was great. Unfortunately, we had to sit through a Phillies game after. The highlight of the evening was Owen and band mates dancing with the Phanatic on the Jumbotron, as seen all over my wife’s Facebook. As for the Phils, most knowledgeable fans (I am not one) knew they were playing well above their heads this season and that their early success was not sustainable. Still, first place in August… would have been nice to see it through. Bryce Harper will cure a lot of ills for this team next year. I honestly don’t remember what I did Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Probably a few shifts at the Exit Zero Filling Station, where I got to see Rico Suave aka Richard Hemenway and Mary Smith as they dined
al fresco (in the nude… just kidding, they ate outside) with their cute little purse puppy. I suggested the dog try one of our excellent buffalo-sriracha cauliflower bites. Mary suggested something I cannot print. Friday I know I definitely worked at the Filling Station because I remember I was the only breakfast server… then another breakfast server came in. Hallelujah! I can go home! Except Cath (my wife and manager in no particular order) wanted some help crafting an online document, so sure! I’ll help you with that, then go home! Hallelujah! Then the shop
girl came in and declared herself too sick. Well isn’t that convenient! Terry’s here! He’ll cover the shop! Won’t you, Terry! Hallelujah. But I don’t mind working in the shop. I get to talk to people (which I rarely do), get ideas for short stories and work ahead on my column so I don’t miss my deadline (he says typing feverishly on Tuesday morning, three days past deadline, with his editor texting him, “Column?”) Because the Spotify in the Filling Station starts repeating songs after about 20 minutes, I pulled up the old Youtube on my laptop and played some Paul Carrack. I am probably the only person in America who is excited he has a new album. You may think you don’t know who I’m talking about, but you’d be wrong. If you’ve heard “How Long” (Ace), “Tempted” (Squeeze) or “The Living Years” (Mike and the Mechanics), you’ve heard Paul Carrack. He’s who I want to sing like when I grow up. Went for a quick nap Friday around 6:30 before my Rio Station Terry O’ke gig. My alarm went off at 7:45, so naturally I hit the snooze. I rolled over and, a few minutes later,

thought it was odd my alarm wasn’t going off. I looked at my phone... 8:36. Apparently that one eye-blink took 50 minutes. I would apologize to all the singers I kept waiting that night but they were all in Wildwood for Irish Weekend. My culture feels so appropriated right now. Someone who was definitely NOT at Rio Station singing karaoke was Bill Mastrianni. He totally DID NOT sing “Beth” by Kiss or “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum. I swear on a stack of Cape May Heralds. Speaking of Soul Asylum, in the early 90s there was this movie about the early days of the Beatles called BackBeat. The movie is a C+ but it’s most wellknown for The BackBeat band, which consisted of Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner on vocals, Nirvana’s Dave Grohl on drums, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills on bass and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore on guitar. I bet you did not know that. Saturday saw the world debut of my new band, The Credibles, an event witnessed by literally almost three-dozen people. I was a little nervous heading into this one, as I am with any new project, but the guys (and gal) acquitted themselves well. There was a beginning, a middle and an end and nobody gut hurt, which is the goal at every gig. The Credible return to Cabanas on Saturday, October 27 for their big Halloween costume party. I’m taking suggestions for band costumes. I think four of us should dress as cowboys, one of us as a doctor and go as Westworld. Sunday was our first ever fall Beatles Night, which was only slightly more well-attended than our Credibles gig, but I’ll chalk this one up to the torrential downpours that rained down throughout the night. As ever, the band sounded amazing. And, as ever, the Webbers, the Dunlaps and the Mogcks were there to cheer us on. We do appreciate your being around. The gigs are ridiculously fun to play, but it’s just as fun to see the same faces at every show. Gives the whole endeavor a sense of community.
September 27, 2018 And while we didn’t play “Yellow Submarine”, we did need one to get home. There’s talk of a Christmas with The Beatles show, so stay tuned. Congratulations to Exit Zero Filling Station server Tish Roussos on her 2018 Ugly Mug Froth-Blowing trophy. Those eyes, those legs, those lungs… My phone keeps telling me “Everything is OK.” I know it’s just a message from my anti-virus, but it still makes me feel good. (I need adult friends.) Driving home from work the other night I noticed a leaf flapping on my wiper. Then I thought, “That leaf looks an awful lot like a frog.” And it was! Poor little bastard was hanging on by one suction foot. I magnanimously pulled over to save its little green life and it proceeded to jump from the wiper onto my chest (I did not shriek like a little girl, who told you that?) and into my car. I spent the next 20 minutes trying to find it so I could kill it. He eventually hopped out into the grass to safety. I hope he got eaten by a cat. Rebecca Sundstrom SWEARS she is not a TNT groupie since she does not find me attractive (her own hurtful words), and that she’s only in it for the food. In her defense, the food at Rusty Nail is pretty great. And we decided that TNT grou… enthusiasts should be called either Sparklers or Firecrackers. Lastly this week, since fall is officially upon us, I’d like to take a moment to say thank-you to everyone who came out and supported me this summer at any of my myriad jobs. It was a weird season and my first since 2005 without one primary job, but I think we did okay piecemealing it together. It was great to get out and perform music, my real passion, along with some theater, my real passion, and some writing, my real passion. Who knows what my next real passion will be, but I’ll be sure to share it with you here. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Alan and Carla who are both in sales from Somers Point, NJ and on their way to the beach. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Benjamin Franklin. It’s all about the Benjamins...baby. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
t is time for me to press myself against some fur. And by that I do not mean Young Albert — a Yorkshire terrier’s coat is more like a harsh brush than luxurious fur. Nor am I referring to yon brutish Scotch editor of this fine newspaper: though I admit, that time I accidentally pressed my bare chest against him in a press to get to the bar at The Brown Room (I was fresh from the annual Cape May Turkish Wrestling championships, where I of course won) it was like running against a rain barrel wrapped in mink: very firm and sensuous. No, dear friends, I mean that now the weather has turned chilly, I can smell snow in the air. Oh, you may laugh, until such time as I encounter you on my morning stroll through the city, at which time I will rap you on the temple with my silver-topped walking cane, and you will laugh no more! I smell seasons coming month away, and I tell you, this will be a harsh winter. And not one for people to face with those gauche artificial fiber garments. No, real men and women and every other gender definition
currently in vogue should stick to tweed, wool and fur. Ideally all at the same time. Of course, I am less happy with the source of fur than I used to be: when I was a lad, herds of buffalo used to pass through Cape May and it would take days before one could cross Stimpson Lane safely. But luckily for me, the late and occasionally lamented Ma D’Catur had a collection of fur second only to the Aga Khan himself. And when she passed away, her will specified that every D’Catur heir must wear one of them at least once a day. In sum-
mer, of course, I fulfil that by strolling around the library, fanned by a bevvy of young men and women with palm leaves. But now that fall is here, chased by winter, I can stride out looking both paleolithic and fashionable. Of course, over the years I have donated some to Cape May Zoological Society: I had noticed their Siberian tiger was looking a little threadbare, and so donated a fur coat made from the pelt of one of its ancestors. After that, the took off, and I take annual pleasure at the Shoebies gaping at a such sights as a lion in a tiger coat, a tiger sporting a silverback gorilla cape, and a dozen meerkats sharing a snow leopard jacket. That leaves me with some of the collection’s gems, mind you: Ma once commissioned Ernie Hemingway to make her a coat from Cape May’s unique and rare troupe of pygmy golden gerbils. Each was no larger than your thumb, and glowed like 25-karat gold. I must say it looks magnificent, although, in retrospect, killing all 3,000 gerbils for it was a trifle gauche.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, fun fall events
omething interesting happens in Cape May every Labor Day weekend. The unofficial end of summer is pronounced and pooh-poohed simultaneously. Practical people point to “meteorological summer” which ends on August 31 and pack up the beach chairs. Others hang their hopes on the autumnal equinox and insist there is time for more ocean swims, more lying in the sun and more of all the wonderful things that make summer summer. Then, both groups prove themselves right by acting accordingly. We humans kid ourselves that we have control over our response to the seasons, but science says humans, like all animals, undergo biological changes as the seasons change. In the autumn, your brain activity increases and you are better at memorizing than during other times of the year. Your blood pressure will likely increase, perhaps as an evolutionary attempt to keep your body temperature up. Dopamine increases, encouraging us to bond with the ones we love, and studies show that people have lon-
ger phone calls, with fewer people, in the fall. Conception rates rise because we’re doing a lot of snuggling. Our immune systems gear up for the uptick of colds and flu, our moods get darker and we want to sleep more. Embrace your inner animal and mark the onset of autumn by focusing on nature. Take an early morning walk around Rea’s Farm with New Jersey Audubon and watch for the warblers, sparrows and raptors that migrate through Cape May. Admission is $6 for members and $10 for non-members. No registration is necessary — meet at the Beanery, 213
Stevens Street at Bayshore Road, at 7:30am. At Beach Plum Farm, you can spend Saturdays through October 27 celebrating Fall at the Farm from 11am to 4pm. They promise a “low-key celebration” featuring hayrides, pumpkin picking and corn hole for the kids. Visit the pigs and chickens — just don’t get too attached. Toast the season with local brews and spirits — Cape May Brewery and Nauti Spirits Distillery will be represented. Shop the farm market for vegetables while live music plays. Free admission. Celebrate West Cape May’s favorite vegetable at the Lima Bean Festival on October 6 from 9am to 5pm at Wilbraham Park. Local musicians will keep you entertained as you shop and snack on lima-themed delicacies. That same weekend, the Cape May Wine and Music Festival takes over Hawk Haven Winery (600 S. Railroad Avenue, Rio Grande) on Saturday, October 6 from noon to 6pm. In addition to wine tastings from New Jersey wineries, there will be music, food trucks and a beer garden. Admission is $25 in advance or $35 at the door. This is a must-see event.

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Now that my children have moved out of the house, I would like to have a pet again but do not know how go about it. My friend has urged me to get a pedigree puppy or kitten, but I’m not sure that’s the right thing to do. The plus of getting a kitten or a puppy is that they adopt to your way of life easier than an older animal that has history. On the other hand, there are so many unwanted pets. What do you suggest? — Paws For Thought Dear Paws The Answer Lady recently was in the same predicament. You need to visit the animal shelter on Park Boulevard, West Cape May and a get a tour from the wonderful volunteers there of all the cats
Wise answers to perplexing questions
and kittens. Also, the Cape May County Animal Shelter at Crest Haven in Cape May Court House is a good place to visit for dogs as well as cats. The Answer Lady walked into Cape May’s shelter for a kitten and walked out with an adorable five-year-old cat and couldn’t be happier. As to the pedigree argument — unless you have a strong inclination toward a particular species, isn’t it better to have the satisfaction of giving a homeless fourlegged friend a forever home?
Dear Answer Lady I am a single man of a certain age and a member of a very active church. Last month when I was recuperating from an operation, the minister informed the congregation of my situation. One of the women, also of a certain age and single, brought over a pot of chicken soup. Which was AWFUL. A few days later it was lasagna — equally bad. We’re a month in and she won’t quit, despite my protestations. How do I delicately extricate myself from this and the squash the expectation that it will blossom into something? — Overfed, Underwhelmed Dear Underwhelmed Get a good female friend to spend some time at the house and when she shows up with the next offering, have her answer the door and say you cannot come down because you are indisposed. You might also want to show up at church with her as well. If she says something, say the woman is a friend, which is all you are interested in. In the meantime, call Exit Zero Filling Station and order a juicy burger and fries to go.

Dottie Knapp reviews “Silent Sky” at East Lynne Theater Company
he story of Henrietta Leavitt, a Harvard astronomer who discovered a way to measure distances to other galaxies, is the must-see production currently showing at East Lynne Theater Company. Leavitt’s work changed the belief that the milky way existed alone and led us to understand that we are one of a vast number of galaxies. Her story is told in Silent Sky, by Lauren Gunderson, a production filled with humor and love. Henrietta (played by Kathryn Barnhardt) is so enthusiastic and filled with passion that you can’t wait to get outside and stare up at the stars. You feel her exuberance and you empathize with what she gives up to make her dream come true. Walk in and see a charming, understated set. When the characters appear, you’ll find stars both in the abstract and in the flesh. And at the end, you’ll bask in the universe. The play becomes magical, thanks to Tom Byrn (director) and Lee O’Connor (lighting, sound, stage manager). It’s well worth the price of admission. The incidental music by
Jenny Giering adds to the enjoyment. Henrietta works as a woman “computer” for Harvard astronomer Edward Pickering. She joins two other computer colleagues. The first, Annie Cannon (Nikki Ferry), is a brilliant astronomer and an enthusiastic suffragette. Ferry plays Cannon’s two sides very well, the stern boss of the computers and the mentor who encourages Henrietta to pursue her obsession with pulsing stars. The second, Williamina Fleming, played by Mary Elizabeth Scallen, had been Pickering’s housekeeper until he declared that she could
do a better job than his male students. He hired her as a computer, and indeed she did. Williamina is the life of the party. When orienting Henrietta, she says they are cleaning up the universe for men as women have been doing for centuries. All three delight in cracking jokes at the expense of Peter Shaw (Pat Dwyer) who gives us insight into Harvard’s view of women and becomes Henrietta’s suitor. Dwyer makes the journey with grace and lovability. No less important is Henrietta’s sister Margaret Leavitt (Veronique Hurley) who chooses a life quite different from her sister but manages to support her. Veronique shows her range from warmth to bitterness to forgiveness and caring. Director Tom Byrn did an outstanding job taking us from earth to the stars. I was smiling or laughing through most of the play and I didn’t expect to need a tissue at the end that I had to share with my husband, Mal. Silent Sky plays through October 13 at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May. More information and tickets at www.eastlynnethrater.org.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hen Cape May birders think of fall, they typically think of the ranks of rare and unusual species that will be descending upon the peninsula. But fall also means saying goodbye to the many species that enliven summer days. One such bird is purple martin, enlivening summer skies with its cookie-cutter flight and seemingly endless burbles, chirps and trills. Then there are the prairie warblers. Never common, this bird of brushy edge calls South Jersey its breeding stronghold. For the next several months they will be residents of Florida, Cuba and the West Indies. Bye for now — see you in April or May. Even laughing gulls are leaving, and the terns and herons and egrets. Their departure is brief, though, and their retreat not far. Sure, there are lots of birds to take the place of those departing — waterfowl, sanderling to enliven the beaches and thousands of hawks. But if you want to see a bobolink, look fast or buy a ticket for Argentina where these colorful blackbirds spend the winter.
They’re in their winter garb — dingy yellow, sparrow-like birds that may perch up on a reed stalk in front of the Hawk Watch Platform long enough to note the boldly striped back. If you are lucky the bird will call, a wind chime-like bink that says “Hi, I’m a bobolink.” But don’t expect to hear the male’s song. Song has long since been stripped from the mouths of these birds. The absence of song is one of the defining characteristics of fall. Only Carolina wrens and mockingbirds, who maintain territories and pair year-
round, are singing any more, and mourning doves, who may nest every month of the year. Yes, happily, some birds, including northern cardinal, American goldfinch and red-winged blackbirds are year-round residents, not subject to the seasons. September is synonymous with migrating warblers, birds that fall in the now-yousee-them, now-you-won’t category. Breeding for the most part in the Boreal Forests of Canada, most will winter in Central America and the West Indies. To get an eyeful of migrating warblers, try the wet wooded area next to Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point. You may pick up an oriole, grosbeak or cuckoo, too. Come October, the trees outside the east-facing windows host yellow-bellied sapsuckers, best recognized by the white racing stripe tracing the edge of the folded wing. They really do drink sap, but they are equally interested in the small insects drawn to the sap, as is the Cape May warbler. If you want to see the warbler discovered here, find a sapsucker. But don’t dawdle. Autumn waits for no birder.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
MARCY is about 6 months old and arrived at the shelter as a stray. Although she is playful and friendly, she has not had any training. Marcy will make a good pet for someone who has the time and energy for training. She is very young and good natured. She will be best placed in an adult household or one with more mature children. Adopt today!
LEO is a frisky 1 year old boy who arrived at the shelter with his litter mate (Ollie). Their owner was no longer able to take care of them and was heartbroken to have to leave them at the shelter. By looking at his pictures, you can see he enjoys playing with toys in the yard and already knows a number of behavior cues. Adopt Leo today!
TITAN is a beautiful brindle pitbull mix. He is just one year of age and comes from a loving home. He was surrendered to the shelter because his owner was ill, but the family had great affection for him. He is well mannered in the home, enjoys car rides and is house trained. Titan has a lot of energy and enjoys running in a fenced yard. Adopt today!

“Ed helped us purchase our summer cottage at Cape May Point. During the 3-month negotiation process he was patient and supportive. He went the extra mile for us during this time, opened a lot of doors and was always just a phone call away to promptly respond to our concerns. Because of Ed the purchase of our cottage was a smooth transition. We definitely recommend Ed if you are looking for a knowledgeable individual who will work hard on your behalf.” — gloria & bill CAROL A.
