Bring On The Wine! Last weekend saw one of the most highly anticipated events of the season on this peninsula: The Cape May Wine and Music Festival at Hawk Haven. The two-day fete featured live music concerts, a beer garden comprised of beverages from five local and regional breweries, several food vendors and wine by the glass and bottle from nine local and regional vineyards. Attendees brought their own beach chairs and blankets and enjoyed the serene outdoor setting and good tunes of eight musical acts — a pretty perfect way to say goodbye to summer and usher in fall.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

How do elephants say hello?

To say “nice to see you,” they’ll tap each other with their trunks. Over a longer distance, they’ll emit a sub-sonic rumble that travels via the ground. The target elephants receive it through their feet.

Actor Burgess Meredith performed at the Cape May Playhouse, a casino turned theater, in 1932. He’s best known for his roles in Rocky”(1976) and Grumpy Old Men (1993), but he was also the voice of Skippy Peanut Butter and United Airlines.

Northern harriers, medium-sized hawks, look like owls (in the face). Young ones practice hunting by “catching” inanimate objects like corn cobs. The males practice polygamy but the females, if larger, are more dominant. In Cape May now!

Brothers Joe and Paul Bogle launched the Original Fudge Kitchen in 1972 as a couple of teenagers. What started as a way to make some money for college became a career for the Bogles — and a beloved pastime for Jersey Shore visitors. Now, there are six locations throughout Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor and Ocean City. The secret fudge recipe is known only to a privileged few. And while the taste keeps people coming back, it’s the tradition that makes each visit so special.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 20.

A man is washing windows on the 25th floor of an apartment building. Suddenly, he slips and falls. He has nothing to cushion his fall, and no safety equipment—but he doesn’t get hurt. How is this possible?

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

Y

ou’ve likely heard of TED, conferences held over the world in which opinion shapers from business, sports and life in general share — in 18 minutes or less — ideas worth spreading. Exit Zero has been a sponsor of TEDx Cape May since its launch seven years ago under the energized direction of Norris Clark. But this year, we’re even more stoked (old guys can say stoked, right?) than usual. The event, this Sunday at the 1,000seat theater at LCMR High School, will feature outstanding speakers, including Deb Wallace (who played the mom in ET), Paul Jaffe (an aerospace engineer with a James Bond-like plan for saving the planet), and Cape May’s Richard Crossley (an acclaimed birder). You can read more about the lineup in the TEDx program in this issue. It’s not just the talks we’re thrilled about — a Civic Dinner is happening after tshe event, at Exit Zero Filling Station 4-6pm. The evening will be hosted by Jenn Graham, a TEDx speaker who heads up the Civic Dinners organization, which works

with cities and groups across the world to promote meals for social change. The idea, which has been recognized by President Obama, is to encourage a conversation that matters between diverse voices over food. The dinner at EZFS, focusing on common ground, is a pilot dinner, the first of its kind to tackle the political space. The goal? To push pause on screaming at one another over social media so we can engage in a constructive way in real life. I think it’s fair to say we’re all as hungry for a little under-

standing these days as we are for good food. “We’ve been taught to avoid talking about politics and religion, and this has led to a lack of understanding,” Jenn told us. “Imagine if, instead, we’d been taught how to have a civil conversation around a difficult topic. That’s the beauty and simplicity of what we’re trying to do. Oftentimes, people don’t feel like they can express how they feel without being shamed by friends or coworkers or family.” No worries — the questions you’ll be asked to discuss with your tablemates over dinner (for instance: What do you love about America and what embarrases you?) are meant to bring people together, to help us recognize a shared humanity. They’re NOT not meant to end in a shouting match. The meal, which is $33 including tip, will include three courses. To reserve your seat, visit tedxcapemay.com and click the Civic Dinner tab. Hope to see you there! PS: Went to Harbor Square Theater in Stone Harbor Monday: A Star is Born really is THAT good! Give Lady Gaga the Oscar now!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Buzz Elliott from Fins is up. How long have you been bartending? 15 years. Favorite drink to serve? A Coors Lite bottle. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers ask for water. You have a drink in front of you! How thirsty can you be? There’s an ocean right there! Ha-ha... great answer. Biggest tip you ever received? Too big to mention. That’s what she said...

It was grown in Germany and presented in October 2016. Also, every single part of a pumpkin is edible. Yep, you can eat the skin, leaves, flowers, pulp, seeds, and even the stem!

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Mike and Elizabeth who are both doctors from Plymouth Meeting, PA who were strolling the mall with their baby in tow. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Bradley Cooper. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

s I write this to you at 8am Saturday morning, my most happiest, joyous of times, I can barely contain my anger. I know it’s been a trying week for all of us, our relentless, partisan media feeding you scads of fake news and untruths in a blatant smear attempt. Why is it so hard to simply present the facts as we know them? To present the news and not become the news? With this in mind, I must hereby demand an apology and retraction from Exit Zero Publishing; those band photos from last week were NOT from Beatles Night — rather the debut of my new band, The Credibles. To my fellow Credibles, Sue Polcer, Al Olivero, Jon Branca and Dr David Bee, I humbly apologize for this glaring oversight on behalf of this publication. To my fellow Love Me Dudes, Sue Polcer, Al Olivero, Rachel Husta, Herb Moore and Terry Dougherty, I humbly apologize that you were mistaken for the jokers listed above. Personally, I blame Katie Repici, Exit Zero Girl Friday, for asking me, free of any

context, what the name of my Beatles band was. I would also blame EZ photog Aleksey Moryakov but he hasn’t taken a bad picture of me in about three years and you just don’t mess with that kind of volcanic chemistry. I mean, what’s next? I suppose next week my Billy Joel band, The Strangers, will be captioned as an Elton John tribute. BILLY JOEL IS WAY BETTER THAN ELTON JOHN AND MAYBE ELTON JOHN SHOULD STOP MAKING SO MANY STUPID RECORDS! (Deep breath.) Hopefully we can now put this whole

messy affair behind us. Hey, speaking of the Piano Man, I’m writing this the day before our Sunday Billy Joel Night. So… I hope you went? And if you didn’t… I guess that’s okay, too? I don’t know. It’s weird writing about stuff in this little grey time area. So maybe I shouldn’t. Please strike this testimony from the record. Kudos are in order for local actor Kyra Adams, currently performing in Cape May Stage’s production of The Shuck. I’m sure her colleagues Kim Zimmer and Bill Tatum are great, but I never threw them up in a show with two hours notice the way I did Kyra in 2015. (I believe she would describe my directing style as “learn your lines and don’t bump into the furniture.”). Spend any amount of time with this young lady and it is immediately apparent she is destined to become the next Sutton Foster. She also recently appeared on HBO’s The Deuce. And she’s so kind and pert that I’m not even filled with jealous rage at her success! Congratulations, Kyra. (Who’s your agent?) Question of the Week: “Am I dead? Is this

heaven?” From an Exit Zero Filling Station guest while eating his lunch in our retro dining room and listening to 50s rock and roll. Answer I Wish I Had Given at the Time: “No, this is Iowa.” Not only am I ashamed I didn’t think of it on the spot, I am morbidly ashamed that Jack Wright thought of it before I did. Come on, Terry. You’re better than that. Jack was a little miffed I didn’t mention the Filling Station in last week’s column, so now I will overcorrect. I know most of you don’t wake up and think, “Hey, let’s go to the publishing office for breakfast.” Or, “You know where we should go to dinner tonight? The gas station!” But you can, and you should. Because Exit Zero Filling Station is all things to all people. Okay, it’s some things to most people. Well, it’s definitely a thing, that’s for sure. And it’s a great place to have a yummy breakfast or a ridiculously decadent burger or curry. Plus, I’m there. How can you possibly resist! My fellow EZFS server Trisha Sweeney shared her thoughts on our fresh brewed iced tea, opining that it’s only good for 48 hours before it gets weak and cloudy. I know just how you feel, iced tea. I know just how you feel… Was happy to serve lunch to Jim Moffat, Jen Mckeown and Dave Clemans, who were huddled up discussing some top-secret stuff I couldn’t quite get close enough to eavesdrop. They had our divine Thai Shrimp and Coconut Soup and three of the most tantalizing cans of beer I’ve ever seen. Dave has a new book out, Destination: Exit 0, available in the gift shop where you can still not buy my book, Murder-Oke. If you can spare a good thought this week, please send one to Darlene Tschopp. Darlene is as sweet as the day is long and one of my favorite karaoke singers. She recently lost her dad and now her fella, Bob Rogers, has fallen ill. Bob is an ornery cuss when fully healthy, so I can only imagine what he’s like in the

October 11, 2018 hospital. Even Mother Teresa would want to slap him one. But if anyone can see him through, it’s Darlene, who makes Mother Teresa look like a real jerk. Speaking of karaoke, as my Friday nights at Rio Station limp along in underwhelming fashion with two or three singers a night, I can’t help but wonder if karaoke died and nobody told me. Ten years ago I was hosting eight shows a week with huge crowds all fighting for a turn at the mic. Now, well, suffice to say enthusiasm has been lacking. Has this thing run its course? Or am I just a bad host? The Eagles have the look of a 10-6 team this year. I was a regular-if-not-avid listener to Mike & Mike on ESPN radio for years. Generally during rides to school. It was there. Inoffensive and sometimes entertaining. But since Mike Greenberg was replaced by Trey Wingo it’s the aural equivalent of chewing tin foil. Mike Golic feels the same. I can just tell. But he’s gotta keep gettin’ dem checks. I think I love Gritty. I know I was a little hard on A Simple Favor last week, but it’s a bad movie. So Tom Sims probably loved it. Lastly this week, we hope to start producing some new Undertow podcasts in the coming weeks. (Visit theundertownetwork.com to listen to existing eps.) Co-host/engineer Chris Nagle and I had crazy summers but are now ready to get back behind the mics and start making fun of each other. Unfortunately, the Undertow Players (our little theater troupe) will not be performing in October as anticipated, but we hope to get our shit together for November. And don’t forget TNT (Tim & Terry) move to The Brown Room this Sunday for some acoustic goodness. To support any and all of these projects, visit Patreon.com/terryoke1 and drop in a buck. Now, back to The McCain Funeral... ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

e need a space elevator. Or to be more precise, we need to find our old space elevator. But first things first: what, you ask, is a space elevator? Well, it’s an elevator that has a top button saying “space”. We first constructed the Cape May space elevator in the mad days of the space race: when dear JFK told America we would land on the moon, he was promoting the rocketship program, and rightly so. But the following weekend, when he came to the city to enjoy a cocktail at Martini Beach, he asked us (me, Ernie Hemingway, a pre-teen Bill Gates, the science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) to work out a less showy but more effective way of getting there “just in case”. We had planned our space cannon, which was initially promising, but when we tested the full scale prototype using “volunteers” from Wildwood, we found that the delivery system was perfect, but the G-forces (by coincidence, G-Force was the name of a short lived but most enjoyable bar during this city’s Cape Gay heyday) required

meant that our brave Capestronauts were a thin layer of jelly on the floor of the capsule by the time it reached orbit. This was not the televisual material JFK needed, and so Arthur chimed in with his elevator plan. He explained that it would become a tourist attraction that would make us all rich. And so we quickly built the elevator from materials we had to hand, and within a week, we were testing it. Viktor, the bartender grizzly from The Brown Room, insisted on going first (it’s an ursine thing) and 24 hours

after departing with a cheery wave, he was back (elevators are not fast: ours was powered by a treadmill where volunteers and petty criminals would supply the watts) wide0eyed and claiming that (a) it worked, (b) the view was tremendous, and (c) he had seen the face of god, and god was a bear. All was going swimmingly, until JFK called to warn me that Russian agents had heard about the elevator and were intent on sabotage. Well, we immediately painted the elevator, using a (large) can of secret prototype “invisible paint” we had left from World War Two, and that solved the problem. The only downside being that we could no longer see it ourselves. And in all of the fuss, it turned out that the map showing the elevator’s location had been used by a hasty painter to clean his brushes, so that too became invisible. As did Viktor, who tripped and fell in the attendant unseen mess. So should you stumble on an invisible bear, do be a darling and ask him where the elevator is.

2018 Program: Common Ground

T

his Sunday, October 14, from 9am-3:30pm, TEDxCapeMay returns for its seventh season to explore “Common Ground” through outstanding and innovative presenters from a wide variety of fields. The event takes place at the 1,000-seat performing arts theater at Lower Cape May Regional High School and includes an open bar lunch reception at Congress Hall. At a TEDx event, video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx events. TEDxCapeMay seeks to develop and leverage the TED experience at a regional level, bringing together innovators and inspirational speakers to the Cape May area.

Dee Wallace Actor, Author & Michael Eagle Educator & International Speaker Activist You likely know Dee Wallace as Mary — aka, the mom from Steven Spielberg’s ET: The Extra-Terrestrial. (Ahem, the woman who knocked America’s favorite alien with a refrigerator door.) But this Kansasteacher-turned-prolific-actor is also an internationally acclaimed speaker who knows a thing or two about perseverance — when she booked her first of more than 200 commercials, she had only $4 in her bank account. “I left for New York, and my mom thought I’d be a goner in a week,” she said on the talk-show circuit following the release of ET. Instead, she went on to make 130 films, author five books and, now, grace the stage of TEDx Cape May.

Michael Eagle is a new voice in the education revolution. Having taught for nearly 20 years in US public schools and academia — including the University of Texas, NYU, and Stony Brook University — Michael left what he describes as the “exhausted” traditional system to design and develop innovative educational products that combine accessible technology with personal interaction. He believes it is up to each of us to change our educational systems by demonstrating our natural ability to learn and grow through experience and creation. Michael is also a world champion drummer and percussionist who teaches and performs all over the world.

Katya Simonsen High School Student & Artist

If the children are our future, then the future’s looking bright. At least, that’s the case with Katya Simonsen, president of the junior class at Lower Cape May Regional High School. An honor student and three-season athlete, Katya is also an entrepreneur who sells her own paintings. It’s not just a side hustle — it’s a business that thrusts the local community into greater identification with the power of art to connect: classmates, neighbors, even generations. Katya will take a break from dismantling millennial stereotypes to share her insights on the TEDx stage. Kids these days.

James Mtume Musician & Social Activist

Jame’s Mtume’s name means “messenger” in Swahili, which is a on-the-nose for this Grammy Awardwinning musician. A former percussionist for Miles Davis, the songwriter also headed the band Mtume, a group that helped define R&B’s jazz-funk roots. (Parts of their song “Juicy Fruit” have been incorporated into recordings by Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Faith Evans, and more.) While the Philadelphia native’s pedigree also includes composing for motion pictures and producing for the likes of Mary J Blige and R Kelly, he’s equally well known for his activism. He uses his platform to promote the role of music in defining a generation and advancing social progression, one song a time.

Logan Thomas Student & Racial Equality Advocate

Born and raised in a predominantly white town, Logan Thomas is aware of how a small difference in skin tone can grow into large misconceptions and stereotypes about race. A Middle Township High School senior and member of Jack & Jill of America —an organization dedicated to nuturing future African American leaders — she is on a mission to find common ground within her peer group and, ultimately, around the world. Logan embraces her culture in just about everything she does. In deconstructing how African American music, food, style, and even physical appearance influence society, her ultimate goal is to underline the intrinsic value of black lives.

Jenn Graham CEO & Social Innovator

Jenn Graham has a clear passion for raising awareness, understanding, and collective action around important issues from racial equity to transportation to early childhood education. This civic focus is on display throughout Civic Dinners and Aha! Strategy, the two companies she’s founded. Her latest endeavor, Civic Dinners, is an award-winning civic engagement platform that brings diverse voices together for conversations that matter. More than 500 dinners have taken place worldwide, from Atlanta to Auckland, and they’ve sparked real and lasting change, including the launch of several nonprofits and new companies. Jenn’s work has been recognized by President Obama.

While so many young people (and, let’s face it, older people) are glued to their screens, high school student Jack McDonough is connecting with the natural world around him. A local and avid nature photographer and birder, his interests have recently expanded to include dragonflies, salamanders, minks and wildflowers as he studies the complex relationships and behaviors of these creatures and the ecology of the landscape. His presentation will offer fascinating insights into local animal life, especially bird calls.

Sanjana Buddi is a senior at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, NJ. She is a varsity tennis player, double bass musician, volunteer with RWJ hospital, and a Girl Scout working on her gold award. With the assistance of PURE Youth, Sanjana works with schools all over the world to make sure they get the assistance they need. About two years ago, Sanjana and her mom started a PURE branch and, through this, she has completed successful fundraisers for many schools, from the inner cities of North America to the rural areas of south India. Helping fund dining halls, online facilities, and libraries has helped her understand the power of young people to change the world.

While it’s impossible to know the exact number of birdwatchers in America (estimates range from 45 million to upwards of 60 million), it’s safe to say the hobby has... taken flight. And Richard Crossley, internationally acclaimed birder, has key insights into why. The award-winning author and photographer knows just how minimal our differences with other animals are — despite what society believes — and he advocates connecting with nature in order to rediscover our common ground. His lessons from the birding frontlines promise to engage not just those enamored by all things avian, but those who can’t tell the difference between a warbler and a wren.

A satellite capable of harnessing solar power from outer space and beaming it back to Earth may be the tense sci-fi plot of the James Bond film “Die Another Day,” but if spacecraft engineer Paul Jaffe has his way, this uber-tech could become reality. Paul, who has held major roles in dozens of space missions, has a plan for implementing a space-based solar program that could result in the world’s only clean, constant and global energy supply — rainy days bedamned. In other words: Houston, we have power. And Cape May? We have a seriously engaging talk.

The #metoo campaign launched a social media movement. So... now what? Enter Debjani Biswas, an Amazon #1 bestselling author and executive coach who regularly appears on CBS, ESPN and iHeart Radio. Her latest book, #Ustoo, centers on ways all of us — yes, ALL of us — can recognize gender biases and smash them with the contempt they deserve. Her frameworks for increasing inclusivity have been implemented in more than 20 countries, her insights are fresh, and her TEDx Cape May talk promises to be — hashtag — brilliant.

Professor Mark Rahdert is a member of the Beasley School of Law faculty where he specializes in the areas of constitutional law, torts, and comparative constitutional law. He is an award-winning author of scholarly books and is often called on by national media to comment on a variety of topics, including recent Supreme Court nominations and decisions. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was Note Editor for the Yale Law Journal, and a summa cum laude graduate of Harvard University. In addition to Constitutional Law, Comparative Constitutional Law and Torts, Mark’s teachings include political and civil rights, federal jurisdiction, freedom of religion and the Supreme Court.

P

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, dressing up for fun

laying dress-up frees children to experiment with identity, allowing them to try on a variety of personas as they figure out who they are. Costumes allow them to claim power, express their admiration for a character from their favorite movie or embrace a challenging behavior. Dressed up, they can be aliens or superheroes or royalty. Behind a paper mask, they can be wild animals with no rules, or robbers breaking rules or even mommies and daddies making rules. In October, adults get in on the fun. Stripped of our daily costumes, we shed our responsibilities for a while. For a few hours, your job is not your job. Explore the road not taken or take a trip back in time. Squeeze into your school uniform and be a carefree kid. An eye patch and a tin foil hook make you a pirate. Adapt an old graduation gown and you can be a demon, an angel or a priest. Be a mime so you don’t have to talk or be a newscaster whose microphone lets you never shut up. For help in coming up with a costume

or exploring your darker desires, Elaine’s (513 Lafayette Street) presents Dead Sexy Boolesque on October 11 and October 12 at 8pm. The Salty Sirens offer a revue “filled with tingly torment and hauntingly delicious delights.” Tickets are $30, available in advance from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, online at capemaymac. org or at the Washington Street Mall information booth at Ocean Street. Doors open at 6:30 and food and beverages are available for purchase. Want to make your ghost costume authentic? MAC also offers Phantoms of the

Physick Estate: What Happens After Dark on Fridays and Saturdays, October 12 through 27 at 7pm. Tour Dr Physick’s house with a spirit guide and find out what strange things happen at the estate when the lights go out. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 children. Spend a weekend getting up close and personal with the spirits at Elaine’s Ghost Hunter Weekend, October 19 to 21. Take in a show, take a walking ghost tour and enjoy a private reading with psychic Laurie Hull. Visit elainescapemay.com for reservations and information. Maybe you want to dance the Time Warp again? Gather your props and rehearse your lines. Elaine’s hosts a free Rocky Horror Picture Show party on October 19 at 7 p.m. at the Patio Bar, featuring “new fall libations on special.” Call 609-884-1199 for more information. Or, save your creativity for the Drunken Pumpkin Carving Contest on October 30 from 5 to 9pm. Bob for apples and enjoy live music by the firepit. Advance registration — $10 — is required and proceeds benefit Animal Outreach of Cape May County. Call 609-884-1199 to reserve your space.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband is considerably older than I am, but that was never an issue until recently. Lately, it seems we spend more time going to the doctor or talking about upcoming doctor appointments than we do anything else. None of these medical issues are major. Allergies, rashes, moles. My fear is that he is becoming a hypochondriac and perhaps looking for an excuse to avoid romantic encounters. What should I do? Should I say something? — Neglected Dear Neglected Of course you must say something. Gently, lovingly. You act as though you are a demanding wife. Not so, but a concerned one. In this day and age, most romantic problems can be rectified. As to the

Wise answers to perplexing questions

hypochondria, he might be going through a mild depression. Encourage him to do new things which take him out of himself and his every day concerns. One easy cure is a romantic getaway which you can do easily right here. A weekend reservation for Congress Hall, LaMer or one of the B&Bs like the Peter Shields Inn would give you a view of the ocean when you wake up and a wonderful place to dine in the evening. See if that helps relax him and opens him up to talking about his malaise.

Dear Answer Lady Every Friday my buddies and I go to the Ugly Mug. There are five of us and we each take a turn buying a round of beers. We welcomed the new guy aboard a couple weeks ago. He seems to like us. He seems nice enough but EVERY time it’s his turn to buy a round, we find him hiding behind some tall guy at the end of the bar. Or he suddenly has to go to the bathroom. Or catch a smoke. We try to wait him out, but how long are you going to wait for a beer? We have to work with this guy who also happens to be our supervisor. — Sick of Get-Over Guy Dear Sick Stop buying rounds of drinks and each pay for your own. Sometimes guys are so rooted in ritual they never think out of the box and this is an easy box to break out of. This takes the angst off of you lot and puts New Guy in the position of having to pay for his own beer. Watch, the Answer Lady bets dollars to RSK Doughnuts that New Guy stops coming on Fridays once he gets on to the new rules.

Tom Sims on all the local cinematic happenings

ormally right about now I would start hyping the Cape May Film Festival. For many years, in the fall we would host New Jersey’s favorite film festival — got three annual NJ People’s Choice Awards (in a row no less) to prove it. But just because we now host the event in the spring doesn’t mean the Cape May Film Society has a quiet season coming up. Quite the opposite! It starts next week. On Friday, October 19 the Society is screening Under an Arctic Sky, and for the first time we are partnering with Cabanas to host the event. Six surfers sail out off the coast of Iceland knowing the worst storm to come ashore in 25 years is about to hit. Surf’s up... temperature’s down! Film society president Veronica Scutaro first saw the film at a surf shop in Long Beach Island... and she had to bring it down to the surfing enthusiasts in Cape May. “The cinematography when they surf under the northern lights is breathtaking,” she says but quickly adds, “the whole film is

Under An Arctic Sky is showing October 19 exciting and intriguing. And of course one of the surfers is a native New Jersey surfer.” On November 30, the Film Society is showing RBG at the West Cape May Borough Hall. With the Supreme Court so big in the news, come learn about the life and times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The film provides a rare glimpse into the 84-yearold judge, and it has been met with critical acclaim. New Yorker critic Sheelah Kolhatkar writes, “I left the theatre informed, inspired, and eager to go to sleep at a normal hour”

(a response to Ginsburg’s ability to work on only a little sleep). Veronica and husband Jerry are hosting coffee after so attendees can have a chance to talk about the film. And keep your calendar open for the beginning of December as the Society is rescheduling it’s screening of Wes Anderson’s animated feature film Isle of Dogs. This is a quirky film from a quirky director featuring the journey of outcast dogs. Appropriately, the film is being screened to support local animal welfare group Animal Outreach. Anderson’s films (be they live action or animated) always capture an unconventional view in their storytelling and character development. And when you “get it,” you tap into something truly unique. Not a bad lineup for a film society that was supposed to pull back after trading in its autumn time-slot for a spring festival. And if you love the movies, be sure to reach out and let us know! We are always on the lookout for new volunteers. See more at www.newnjstatefilmfestival.com.

Bird Droppings

C

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ape May’s volume and diversity of birds is a constant source of amazement to me. It’s North America’s greatest birding destination, beating out the Everglades of Florida, the subtropical riches of the Rio Grande Valley and Alaska, from the Pribs to Cordova. But don’t take my word for it. Head on over to the Hawk Watch Platform and look at the upturned faces of people who have come from all over the planet just to run their eyes through the migratory river of birds that is Cape May’s signature spectacle. Many other states advertize the natural riches of their dominions: autumn foliage, inland waterways, snow-capped peaks... but only one state can boast the riches of Cape May. Millions of migrating monarch butterflies, the greatest concentration of breeding horseshoe crabs on the planet, coastal marshes teeming with life. There is not a single state that doesn’t envy the ecotourism engine that is Cape May. If recognition on the part of local businesses lags, it is not the fault of the birds. The

problem is that many people still regard bird watching as a quaint cottage avocation practiced by a small fraction of the population. The truth is that 70 million Americans are active bird watchers. They rent houses, motel rooms, dine out and go away with glowing accounts of Cape May to share with friends. Just this past weekend I overheard a non-birding trio as they mounted the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park. Perplexed by the mass of binocular shod people assembled, one correctly assessed that all

of them were “bird watchers.” It was they who were in the minority. “Must be a bird watching convention in town,” one hypothesized. Nope, it was just the typical weekend in October crowd when winds are northwest and raptor migration is in full swing. It will be this way into November and standing room only crowds canl persist into December when northwest winds coincide with a weekend. Yes, hawks continue to migrate right through December. Burley red-taileds, colorful red-shouldereds, even a golden eagle or two. Dress warmly. The wind will drive a chill into you. But for the next few weeks, warm weather will prevail and the airspace over Cape May will be filled with Cooper’s hawks, American kestrel and the last of the Broad-wingeds. Arrive in late afternoon and you’ll be treated to the sight of merlins hunting migrating dragonflies. They leave monarch butterflies alone. Toxic, you know. One munch and a falcon is cured of its taste for monarchs for life.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BRONSON maintains his big smile in spite of saying good bye to his family when they moved and could not keep him. He was clearly loved by his family which included a small child who hugged him very tightly before he went to his kennel in the shelter. Give Bronson another chance at happiness and adopt him today!

BUSTER would be a terrific companion for almost anyone who loves dogs. He is a very happy and calm dog who is comfortable around other dogs, enjoys long walks and loves to chase and play with toys. Buster does not belong in the shelter... he is too nice a dog to be overlooked. Give Buster a happy home and the love he deserves today!

CHASE is a 9 pound bundle of energy that loves to be with people and show off his tricks. He catches balls in the yard, sits when asked and rolls over on command. Unfortunately Chase’s owner could no longer keep him, and she and her children were sorry to surrender him. Give Chase another shot at happiness and adopt today!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

PIXIE is a black and white tuxedo cat who is waiting patiently in her cage until someone scoops her up and takes Pixie to her forever home. She is a young kitty, who loves to be pet and adored. So if you’re looking for a furry friend to keep you company and listen to all your stories, adopt sweet Pixie girl today!

SABLE loves to be petted and given attention. He would love the chance to catch the occasional mouse for you, or if you don’t like that, he could keep your feet warm in bed instead! Although Sable requires a special diet, it’s not a big deal. Please come and say hello to Sable. He deserves a happy home just like every other kitty!

GIDGET was a homeless mother who was found on the streets begging for food to feed her babies. She was scooped up and taken to the shelter and was worried sick for days without her kittens and noone to care for them. Finally, a nice man brought Gidget’s babies to her and they have all been adopted. Now it’s mommy’s turn. Adopt today!
