In Honor Of Andy The 2011 death of 45-year-old Cape May Fire Department lieutenant Andy Boyt shook the community. The consensus in town? If you knew him, you were really, really lucky. On October 8, Andy’s memory was honored by an annual paddleout to celebrate the indelible mark he left on this island.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

How much do clouds weigh?

No, they’re not as light and fluffy as they look. Your average fair-weather cloud, aka the cumulus kind, can weigh upwards of one million(!) pounds. Most are made of tiny liquid drops that add up.

Jenni “JWow” Farley of MTV’s Jersey Shore fame — er, infamy — this weekend dined at Peter Shields Inn and took a carriage ride through the historic disctrict with her husband Roger Matthews on their third anniversary.

The Black Duck on Sunset Boulevard — opened 16 seasons ago — has become an institution on Cape Island. That’s because the restaurant’s concept, fine dining food with a casual vibe, works so well in the hands of owner/executive chef Chris Hubert. (He’s a veteran of The Ebbitt Room and Union Park.) The EZ crew is particularly fond of the ahi tuna dish but, predictably, you can’t go wrong with the duck, either. Bon appetit!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, John Hanstein from Fins is up. How long have you been bartending? 12 years too long. Favorite drink to serve? A non-alcoholic baybreeze. I enjoy flipping the mini pineapple juice cans in the air. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When drunk guests shake their glass, tap their bottles or treat staff like personal robots instead of human beings. Biggest tip you ever received? Don’t tell someone you love them if your heart isn’t in it.

We are closed for the season. Thank you for another crabtastic year!

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Sea Mistress - ABV: 8.50% Session IPA is anything but harsh -- she’s loaded with hops, insanely aromatic, and bone dry, yet crisp and ridiculously refreshing. We’ve loaded this session IPA with citrus and fruit-forward hops, keeping the body strong.

Sunset Liquors Foxglove Zinfandel Sale price - $14.99 Paso Robles, Central Coast, CA. A true Zinfandel with springy, berry character and generous body, the soft and smooth tannins leave you with a bright fruit note. Try with burgers or BBQ.

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that cranberries are in season. Did you know that cranberries bounce? Small pockets of air inside the fruit enable it to bounce and float. And on that note... cranberries do not grow in water. Bogs are flooded with up to 18 inches of water the night before the berries are to be harvested.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Sunny from Rio Grande who is in sales and was currently working when we ambushed her. So who would she most like to share this bucket with? Molly.

Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

write to you again this week from my happiest of places — sick as a dog at 8am on a dreary, rainy Saturday morning in the Exit Zero Filling Station gift shop. Woo-hoo. It almost seems like the weather is reflecting my mood, because I know god cares that much. Don’t you all feel bad for me? (I knew you did.) Anyway… As bad as today is, last Sunday was the complete opposite, because I got to play with my awesome band, The Strangers, on Billy Joel Night at Cabanas. I wasn’t feeling great-great that afternoon, which was compounded by a series of transportation snafus (dropping Kid A off at Location X, picking up Kid B from Location Y and dropping at Location Z, etc. Thank you Sue Polcer for being a top-notch piano/horn player and showing Spock-like reserves of patience as my family’s chauffeur), so I walked in to sound check in a pretty foul mood. This already foul mood was exacerbated by having to wait until the Eagles game ended before we could start playing. And the Eagles lost, so we weren’t playing to what I would call a buoyant crowd.

But… as soon as we hit the first few chords of “The Stranger”, all the angst and irritation melted away and I was able to focus on how lucky I was to be singing some of my most favorite music by one of my most favorite artists for some of my most favorite people. Song after song I couldn’t help but smile and, on occasion, struggle with my emotions (I’m a big softy at heart, especially with Wendy Redelico sitting front stage center weeping at all the ballads; thank you Wendy and Randy for another bag of books) as the music took me back to another time and place.

Weekends: Bar @ Noon l Dinner @ 4 Wed - Fri: Dinner @ 5 l closed mon & tues

It truly is my privilege to interpret so many great songs. Like Billy or not, there is no denying he has composed some of the great pop songs of the modern era — “Italian Restaurant”, “Billy the Kid”, “Just the Way You Are”, songs just about everybody knows. As well as B-side gems like “All for Leyna”, “Everybody Loves You Now” and “Laura”. I even busted out my Android to find the lyrics for “Captain Jack”, a song I personally don’t care for but the crowd sure seemed to love. (It’s possible, just possible, I am wrong in my assessment of this song as a real snoozer, as Billy himself has proclaimed.) In short (too late, I know), for four hours or so I was just able to belt out about 50 great songs in what, in my opinion, was one of the great vocal performances of my life. (I’m a pretty harsh self-critic, but I was pretty damn good that night.) So thank you Dave Landis, Sue Polcer, Al Olivero, Walt Sapsai and Steve Kyle for providing the wave on which I rode. We left it all on the field, as they say. Fashion Advice of the Week: From

Beatles and Billy Joel stalwarts Rebecca Sundstrom, Kathleen Scullion and Dean Bloemer: Apparently it’s time to retire my super-cool Iron Fist T-shirt from all future gigs. I will… try. But come on! It’s my gig shirt! Monday, a little wobble-legged and unable to speak above a whisper, I made my way to the Rusty Nail for my acoustic gig with Tim Joyce, reasonably sure I was going to be a well-compensated tambourine player for the day (as I said, I left it all on the field Sunday night; my voice was shot). But, as fate would have it, we did not have to play due to a scheduling snafu. While I would have squeaked my way through as much as possible, I must admit to being a bit relieved. Tim? Tim got a free meal out of it so he was fine. And we look forward to playing for you every other Sunday in the Brown Room. We’re back the 28th, 7-11. Tuesday I was off but got “The Tickle.” You know, the little itch in the back of the throat that signals impending doom. Wednesday I powered through a breakfast/ lunch shift at Exit Zero Filling Station (your local home for food, gas, food gas and Exit Zero swag!), went home, went to bed, and got out about two hours ago. How sick was I? Sick enough that, for the first time since Labor Day 2000, I had to call out from a gig. So, my apologies to anyone who missed me at Rio Station last Friday. I promise I’ll be back this week, rain, shine or plague. Which reminds me (segue!): Friday the 26th will be the annual Scary O’ke show at Rio Station! We’ll be setting up in the big room on the big screen and, as ever, there’ll be prizes for the best, scariest and sexiest costumes (which I win every year with my “Slutty Karaoke Host” outfit). This is always one of the best Halloween parties in the area, so swing on by, sing a song or two, enjoy some pumpkin spice whatever and let’s get weird! The 26th will also be, most

October 18, 2018 likely, my last Terry O’ke at Rio Station for a while as we take some time to consider how best to deploy my brand of Fake Music Magic. I love the Rio and all the friends I’ve made there since 2005, and in no way do I think the book is closed on this, my most venerable gig, so don’t cry for me, Rio Grande. But as I pondered last week, perhaps karaoke as a weekly thing has just seen its day. We’ll figure it out and I’ll let you know right here. Or on my Facebook. Or on my Twitter. But don’t go on my Twitter. Question of the Week: “Are you Jack Wright?” From a table at breakfast last weekend. “I wish!” I answered, “I’m only in crushing debt. Jack is in hopeless crushing debt! No, I’m more like his body double, like Saddam Hussein used to have.” An opinion that is sure to Make Tom Sims’ head explode (Tom is our resident film critic); Vernom is not that bad. In fact, it might be pretty good. It’s a pretty standard super-hero origin story (except this super-hero bites off the occasional head). There’s some great action, a number of solid laughs, and any excuse to watch Tom Hardy go bugnuts is good enough for me. He is the Tom Cruise of gonzo. And you can tell he took all that restraint he showed in Mad Max: Fury Road and unleashed it on his unwitting Venom co-stars. Especially Michelle Williams, who looks like she’d rather be anywhere else. Shout-out to my good “friends” Geoff Rogers and Jack Morey, who each took the time to text me FROM GERMANY to remind me how hopelessly lost I got us back in 2010 during an R&D trip when I worked at Morey’s Piers. If you’d like to see me fly into an instant murderous rage, just say the word, “Kiel.” Lastly this week, I’d like to thank everyone in my immediate family and circle of friends for not dying (at least as of 11:08am Saturday, October 13). ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

f there’s one thing I love more than a fur muff, it’s a double entendre, so I am full of regret that I omitted to use that line in last week’s animal-pelt-themed column. Still, it does remind me of that fabulous joke about a lady going into a cocktail bar and asking the bartender for a double entendre, and the barman gave her one. Moving along... it is high time Cape May had a famous comedy venue again. Oh, I know, some amusing things happen in Carney’s, and there is at least one gentleman who frequents The Brown Room who considers himself quite the raconteur. But we do lack a venue the likes of the long lost and lamented Aristocrats, where America’s funniest used to come and be subjected to Cape May’s special welcome, which was on average one-fifth applause, one-fifth heckling, another 30 per cent blank silence and the remainder a mix of thrown tomatoes and a Molotov cocktail. It was actually the last of those, after Fatty Arbuckle had a gig, that the venue was burned down, along with the rest of the Admiral Hotel.

Cape May natives do have a rather black sense of humor. Who can forget when those unicycling mime artists mistimed their procession along Beach to intersect with our annual Antique Steamroller Convention. It is why we have always had a predilection for employing the occasional ursine (and, before the ban, simian) seasonal workers: the possibilities for random and comic catastrophe are endless when you combine bears, Shoebies and alcohol. We weren’t laughing, though, when Ivan the

Grizzly (bear, that is — not to be confused with Ivan the Grisly, our own homicidal maniac, or Ivan the Gristly, the maker of sub-standard and suspect meat pies, who was eventually run out of town) ran amok at the wheel of the beach tractor. Actually, now I think of it, we were guffawing when he happened upon the fire juggling druids. But I think it is time we tempered out natural caustic wit with some kindness, don’t you? With that in mind, we will be running weekly joke classes, that celebrate the best in inclusive humor. As a kickoff, my own favorite gag: What’s the difference between toast and a Frenchman? The answer is, of course, that you can make a soldier out of toast. See? It’s possible to be amusing and kind. Assuming you ignore the implicit bigotry, borderline xenophobia, and toxic masculinity. On reflection, I think I will just go out for my usual evening walk, with a bag of banana skins, looking for people with unhealthy body mass indexes.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the joy of being scared

umans are built to enjoy being scared. Epinephrine, the side effect of that useful “fight or flight” reflex, is a chemical associated with dopamine, the pleasure hormone. You have probably noticed the connection yourself — moments after you hop on the chair to avoid a mouse, you get the giggles. You climb reluctantly to the high dive and then, after you jump, you immediately want to do it again. Your pulse races and your breath quickens as your heart pumps extra blood, making you feel powerful. It’s exciting and entertaining, which is why we like roller coasters, ghost stories, and haunted houses. Naturalists, naturally, are in on this biological joke, sometimes giving scary names to innocent creatures. Ghost crabs are kind of cute as their light grey bodies scurry from the waterline to their sandy homes. The vampire squid is not a blood sucker. The goblin shark is ugly, but far too slow to be an effective hunter of humans. The fangtooth is harmless. Even the killer whale has a clean record in the wild — there has never been a fatal attack on

a human, except in captivity. Scientists also give innocent names to deadly beasts. The northern stargazer sounds like a peaceful fellow, but he burrows under the sand in shallow Atlantic waters and shocks his unsuspecting prey with electric current. A species of sea cucumber — who fears a cucumber? — emits a deadly poison when threatened. The frilled shark devours prey more than half its size. Dime-sized “clinging” jellyfish don’t sound so bad, but their toxic touch can lead to hospitalization. Sometimes, the name and the fear match. The sarcastic fringehead sounds like

a pouty adolescent, and poses little danger unless you stick your finger in its face. The Bathyphysa conifer has been dubbed the “flying spaghetti monster” and is about as threatening as that sounds. Take a look at the naturally scary side of Cape May this month. Bats are special guests at the Fall Festival of Birding, October 18 through 21, at the Grand Hotel and Convention Hall. The Nature Center of Cape May hosts a Halloween Open House on October 31 from 5-7 at 1600 Delaware Avenue. Stroll the spooky trails through their haunted meadow, touch some creepy animals, including a tarantula and a few snakes, and enjoy some candy while you reflect on the fact that they aren’t so scary. Paint yourself a scary jack o’lantern at Historic Cold Spring Village’s 26th Annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 20, from 10-4. Bring a non-perishable food item and enjoy games, a hayride, and a haunted house throughout the day. Crafters and food vendors will sell their wares along the Village’s shell-paved lanes.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I live in a small apartment building. My problem is that one woman watches everything I do then runs to the building manager to tell him. I like to decorate my door. It is against the rules, but everyone seems to enjoy it. She’s down in the office ratting me out. I have insomnia — she lives below me — and she complains about my “pacing” at least once a month because, she says,” it keeps her up.” I do not “pace.” I do walk around the apartment, because I am up much of the night. Finally, I protested what I consider her harassment and quite frankly bias against me as a gay man. There is a waiting list for these apartments and I suspect she wants to get me out and finagle her best friend in. Fortunately, the office

Wise answers to perplexing questions

has ignored her because she is also busy turning everyone else in for the smallest of infractions. Is there no dealing with this in a more civil manner? She makes me so mad. — Fed Up Dear Fed Up The best revenge is to put on a happy face and then pound your fists into a pillow when you are safely in your apartment. You should take great pleasure in the fact that the office manager has been supportive. All her protestations are for naught. You

need to walk over to Fins and order up a nice refreshing Moscow mule. All seems so much better after one of those. Dear Answer Lady I had a date with a guy I really like and then didn’t hear from him for two weeks. Then we had another date — I didn’t hear from him for a month. The last time he took me to The Ebbitt Room for an incredibly romantic dinner, followed up by a wonderful weekend. Again — silence. If he doesn’t like me, just end it. I hate this lingering in the back wings. Should I force his hand? — In Limbo Dear Limbo There is just one issue to address. What do you want? Do you want to pressure him to spend more time with you? That cannot end well. However, if the lack of commitment on his part is a dealbreaker then you must make that decision. He may very well be dating other people and is struggling with this on his own. If you can bear the indecisiveness of it, it might be worth a whirl to step back and see where this goes.

hen my friend Mo and her son, a nine-year old, self-proclaimed science kid, invited me to go see the new documentary feature Science Fair, I didn’t think much of it. Admittedly, I’m not much of a science guy. Suffice it to say, I was blown away. The film was produced by National Geographic, and it is a testimony to the high-value films that the powerhouse network still generates. The premise is simple yet can easily be lost because of its vastness. The destination is the International Science and Engineering Fair. Each spring, 1,700 high school students from nearly 80 countries arrive to compete for prizes and the chance to get into one of the best colleges in the country. We could easily lose interest as an audience by seeing such an immense swarm of kids. But the movie’s expert filmmakers, Cristina Costantini and Darren Foster, create a storytelling masterpiece. The film starts with a recent winner

Science Fair is inspirational of the grand prize from the festival, Jack Andraka. You know him. He’s the 15-yearold who advanced cancer treatment light years. Since winning the award, he was featured on television shows and magazine articles. The first scene in the film beautifully captures the exuberance of his winning the award — and it is completely engaging and adorable. The film goes on to feature nine students from around the world who, in one way or another, get the opportunity to go to the big fair. Their stories are compelling, in

some cases gut-wrenching. From a number of entrants out of Jericho, New York, who’s teacher is the ultimate “mother hen” to a student from South Dakota who can’t get her science teachers to sign on to her project. By the time we as the audience arrive to the science fair, we are perched on the edges of our seats. At least I was. And so were the attendees at Sundance — where it took home the audience favorite award. But what did Max think? Here’s a science kid who would be interested in the subject. He really liked it, picked out his “favorite character” and was wrapped up in the storyline. No doubt I’m more of an arts geek, but I do relate to the my science geek sisters and brothers in this film. We nerds need to stick together. Seriously, the kids in this film will change the world. They should be center stage as we encourage them to cure our illnesses or save our environment. So “get your geek on” (or support the kids who will make your life better) and see this truly inspirational film.

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ver the course of the next several weeks, one of the planet’s epic spectacles will sweep across Cape May. You owe it to yourself to witness it and marvel at the blind faith that propels hundreds of millions of birds to set their wings to the wind and set off for destinations unknown. No vantage point offers more insight or spectacle than the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park. There, surrounded by human spectators from many lands, you can raise binoculars and be awed and inspired by creatures crafted by natural selection to vault hemispheres. Cape May ranks among the best places on earth to see migrating peregrine falcons. Heralding from Greenland west to the Yukon, these blade-winged speedsters filter down the Atlantic coast to winter in the tropics. The very shape of a peregrine says “speed.” The bird is a miracle in progress and while I must have seen 10,000 launch themselves, I am as moved by each leap of faith as I was in 1976 when I first saw

migrating peregrines. Today, with the peregrine populations almost fully restored, the great birds are no longer uncommon, but they are ever revered, hailed by the official counter so that all on the platform can draw inspiration from the shape of a crossbow set in the sky, the signature field mark of this long-distance voyager whose name falco peregrinus means “wanderer.” But by the time the Arctic peregrines find Cape May, their wanderlust is guided by purpose and

direction, south. Migration is one of the planet’s great reapportionments of life. By using it, birds are able to exploit the seasonal bounty of the northern hemisphere. But migration is a road that runs two ways — as winter closes its grip across the Arctic, what goes up must come down. Shorebirds, waterfowl, songbirds and some insect species are crowding Cape May airspace. It’s the greatest show on earth and we in Cape May enjoy front row seats. Arrive before 10am and you’ll claim yours. Cape May Bird Observatory provides the interpretive naturalists, Swarovski Optik the binoculars, Ma Nature, the spectacle. So, head over to the hawk watch platform and turn your eyes skyward. North to northwest winds are best but any condition short of pouring rain will find some birds of prey navigating tight ropes in the sky, treading a line between summer and winter, carrying their genes forward. Now put this paper down and get out there. Autumn won’t go on forever.

Congratulations PHILLY & SINA! Now 5 Deva curly girl specialists to serve you!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

TITAN is a beautiful brindle pitbull mix. He is just one year of age and comes from a loving home. He was surrendered to the shelter because his owner was ill, but the family had great affection for him. He is well mannered in the home, enjoys car rides and is house trained. Titan has a lot of energy and enjoys running in a fenced yard. Adopt today!

BUSTER would be a terrific companion for almost anyone who loves dogs. He is a very happy and calm dog who is comfortable around other dogs, enjoys long walks and loves to chase and play with toys. Buster does not belong in the shelter... he is too nice a dog to be overlooked. Give Buster a happy home and the love he deserves today!

COTY is a 10 year old chow who found his way to the shelter when his owner passed away. He was severely matted when he arrived at the shelter so his look has changed dramatically. Coty looks like a shorn lamb! Coty is quiet and polite in manner. He would make an excellent companion in an adult household that is predictable and calm.

- Client Testimony “ The entire time you were always professional, kowledgeable, and helpful. You were consistently upbeat and when things did not work out you would say, ”don’t give up, the right one is out there and you will find it.” You were correct and eventually we found that right one for us. We appreciate the fact that you always promptly responded to texts, emails, and phone calls and answered all of the questions we had no matter what they were.“ -Lou & Maureen
