The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

Cape May has had three convention halls. The first, built between 1916 and 1917, was destroyed by the Ash Wednesday Nor’easter of 1962. The second was meant only as a temporary structure but, to everyone’s surprise, it lasted 45 years. The third and current hall, which cost more than $10.5 million, finally opened in 2012. Since then, it’s hosted musical acts, lectures, town hall meetings, conferences, weddings and — a beloved Cape May tradition — roller skating.

Ramblings From The Editors

Y

Our special correspondent gives the lowdown on last week’s Cape May election candidates debate

ou have to hand it to Cape May Taxpayers’ Association. Their Candidates Night at Cape May Elementary School last Thursday, was a professionally run evening which strove to keep the playing field level. The League of Women Voters mc’d the event and CMTA Treasurer Pete Iurato told the candidates to put their notes away after they completed their two-minute opening statement, ensuring that answers to the random questions were indeed given spontaneously and not written out in advance. Bonus: They brought in a sound man and everyone could actually hear what was being said, especially the candidates. The event was not sparsely attended, but it was by no means a full house, a far cry from the mayoral election two years ago. We estimate about 75 people attended, many of whom were there to support their respective candidates. For those not in the know, on November 6 Cape May voters will be choosing three council members from a roster of five can-

We were very sorry to hear of the death of Jerry Inderwies at the age of 83 last week. Jerry was a former public works superintendent in Cape May, a volunteer fireman, a council member and, from 200108, a popular mayor who always carried himself with dignity. Jerry is survived by Lydia, his wife of 60 years, three children — Suzanne, Jennifer and Jerry — 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Rest in peace, Jerry. didates to serve a four-year term beginning January 2019. The three seats up for grabs are those currently held by Bea Pessagno, Roger Furlin and Shaine Meier. Meier is the only incumbent running for a second term. The other four candidates are: Mark Disanto, Zack Mullock, Stacy Sheehan and John Van de Vaarst. DiSanto is a sport fishing captain whose driving campaign theme is a proposal to build a municipal marina and municipal golf course along the Cape May harbor on

Delaware Avenue with a harbor walk connecting the two. His idea is to “put money in your pocket not take it out.” He also proposes building a parking lot where the proposed Lafayette Street Park renovation and expansion is being planned. Incumbent Meier “loves what he does” and “loves helping people.” In answer to the question, “should the mercantile tax be increased given the fact that Cape May is now a 10-month season resort,” he answered no, reasoning, “when tourism goes up, taxes

go down.” He suggested the city should focus on those not currently subject to a mercantile license or tourism levy like whole house rentals and the new kid on the block — AirBnB and VRBO. Mullock, who operates Cape May National Golf Club and whose family owns the Chalfonte Hotel, ran for council in 2016 and serves on the Historic Preservation Commission. He has been a strong critic of plans introduced at a January Planning Commission meeting to make the Washington Commons shopping center and surrounding area a redevelopment zone. Back story: Although the plan was shot down at that meeting, the city has brought in experts in redevelopment to educate the public on the concept and to take another look at that property as well as the former Beach Theatre site on Beach Avenue. Mullock maintained that redevelopment skews tax advantages for the developer and deprives the taxpayers of having any input in the project once the zone is designated for redevelopment. He has been an advocate for a referendum on the subject. Sheehan, whose brother is CMPD Captain, Rob Sheehan, the former police chief, and whose uncle is Bob Elwell, former mayor of the city, is a 25-year employee of Merck Pharmaceutical Company with a background in research and vaccine development. Many of her answers stressed a desire for transparency and a need to “work as a team.” Her particular concerns were with regard to the sea wall and the fact that “25 percent of all residential properties in Cape May are below elevation and therefore mitigate flooding.” She suggested taking a second look at the Army Corps of Engineers’ recommendations for Poverty Beach and stressed the need to examine all the facts before the city before reaching

October 25, 2018 any conclusions. Van de Vaarst, who worked for the federal government for 36 years before retiring to Cape May 14 years ago, described himself as a “strategic thinker who likes to listen.” Van de Vaarst, whose campaign slogan is “Working together works,” spoke a great deal about the need for fiscal responsibility. He cited the need for a much-discussed public safety building with the codicil that, “You can do more with less, but you can’t do nothing with nothing.” Van de Vaarst served on the Planning Commission and currently sits on the Zoning Board. He does not oppose a redevelopment zone but stressed the need for “transparency” and public input. The candidates fielded questions for what seemed to be a marathon Q&A — just short of two-and-a-half hours. Some of the questions were repetitive, while others were bizarre, like the question Sheehan fielded on whether or not she was in favor of the legalization of marijuana. Given her work in the pharmaceutical industry, she might have been the most logical to answer the question. For the record, she is in favor of medicinal marijuana but opposed to the legalization of the drug for recreational purposes and, as we all know, never the twain shall meet. Van de Vaarst answered a question on whether he favored council meetings starting at 6pm, which began with the current administration. The two previous administrations held a work session at 1pm the first Tuesday of the month and a 7pm meeting the third Tuesday of the month. In case you are wondering, he likes the 6pm meetings because people who work can attend and because, if it is a late meeting, he can be in bed by 9:30. Disanto gets the prize for Most Relaxed. Between questions, he leaned back in his chair, microphone pushed away

and waited, with a huge smile on his face, for the next parking question — he answered basically the same question three times about what he sees as the need for a “remote parking lot” at St John and Lafayette streets. In answer to a question regarding the appointment of residents asked to serve on the mayor’s numerous advisory committees, De Santo did not mince words. He feels there are too many committees and those that are necessary should “not just be the mayor’s friends.” Meier and Mullock were given a rare opportunity to demonstrate their civic knowledge by defining our present form of government. For inquiring minds, we have a strong city manager form of government as opposed to a strong mayor. Both candidates were up to the task of getting their definitions correct. Mullock added that he thought the current city manager Neil Young should be more vocal and more informative during the council meetings. Meier sees the mayor’s role as being that of a “tribal leader.” The big questions of the night and the issues of this election cycle centered mostly around redevelopment and the need for a public safety building. In case you are out of the loop, tight now the plan is to construct an estimated $10 million public safety building at the exiting fire hall site and to use the parking lot of that facility for the police station which would face Washington Street. Council approved a $300,000 bond to pay for a conceptual architectural plan to facilitate an RFP (Request For Proposal) to select an architectural firm to develop final plans. The Sorting Committee is going through eight proposals as we speak. So, let’s see where the five stand... DiSanto sees the need for a public safety building but would like to see the city use the existing “thumbprint to rebuild a new steel structure.” He also

October 25, 2018 would be in favor of a referendum on the question. He is not a fan of redevelopment. Meier said a public safety building is “long overdue” maintaining that the police and firemen “deserve a safe place.” As to redevelopment, he said he was glad the Planning Commission shot down the January proposal because the “people were not included and the public did not understand what redevelopment is” and stressed the need to be more “inclusive” in the future. We’ve already gone over Mullock’s resistance to redevelopment except to add that he is in favor of “rehabilitation,” either for a public safety building or over redevelopment and again pressed for a referendum on both questions, adding that “the public should be included in all decisions.” Sheehan cited the need for “more transparency” and inclusion of the citizens in making any decision regarding the city. As we said earlier, Van de Vaarst is in favor of the public safety building with fiscal responsibility at the top of his priority list when it comes to the construction phase. As to redevelopment, he also referenced the tool metaphor, calling for a town hall format to air proposed plans and citizens’ concerns. Overall, the evening was pretty innocuous — there was the predictable parting shot at the end by one candidate questioning the veracity of the other with obviously no opportunity to refute said charges, but that is to be expected. It is after all, an election. This is an important election for the city because the three elected will define the council for the next four years and beyond. We hope voters will not dismiss the election as being not worth their time. It is indeed very much worth your time. In many respects, the outcome will determine the future of the city’s landscape for years to come.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Kaylee Devine from The Mad Batter is up. How long have you been bartending? One month. Hey, we never said our bartenders had to be seasoned bartenders! Favorite drink to serve? The Manmosa because it’s the most popular drink we serve here. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When the keg kicks and you go to pour a beer and it splashes on the customer sitting near the taps and they look at you like it’s your fault. WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Fresh Brewed Coffee Stout ABV: 5.0% CMBC take their dark, slightly sweet, and full-bodied stout and condition it on locally-roasted coffee from Avalon Coffee. Consume as a delightful dessert beer or an arousing breakfast beer.

Collier’s Liquor Store Rio Madre Rioja - $11.99 This Spanish Red is 100% Graciano and offers a ripe bouquet of black cherries, dried flowers and leather in a well balanced medium bodied red. Tons of flavor and character abound in this little gem of a wine! Pairs well with lamb or other gamey meats.

Produce Report After chatting with local farmers, we were informed that butternut squash are in season. Did you know that butternut squash are often regarded as the winter squash, but are never grown in the winter? They are picked in the fall. Also, they are a natural antioxidant and are great for skin and eyesight health. A healthy holiday option indeed!

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Michelle Shimonis and crew from Duryea, PA who were walking the mall when we ambushed them. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Bob Marley. Yea Mon.

O

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

ne side benefit of being sick for 10 days straight? I dropped about 8lbs. I celebrated this by eating half a Domino’s sausage and extra cheese pizza. Okay, it was a whole Domino’s sausage and extra cheese pizza, but it was only a medium! This reminds of a couple of things... 1. How sincerely I appreciate everyone who reached out on social media while I was under the weather. The internet is usually a manure field. But you people are the truffles. 2. How long it can take to get your Domino’s pizza and how difficult it is to tip your driver if you accidentally click Take-Out instead of Delivery. Completely my fault, I admit. And they were nice enough to re-cook my order after an hour. But after about six calls from my delivery driver I felt like should have bringing her a pizza. Had a couple of nifty Congress Hall-type gigs last week with my wing man, Tim Joyce. (He’s the talent, I’m the eye candy.) 1. First was Sunday night in The Brown Room, or Cape May’s Living Room. I usually

make fun of marketing taglines like that, but this one is apt. Crackling fire, comfy chairs and sofas, Randy and Wendy Redelico (Ding!) buying me drinks. It’s just like home! Except at my house we have no fireplace, no comfy chairs or couches, and the only drink I get served is the juice box from somebody’s kids meal. But still! It was an excellent gig highlighted by my friends Cuz Ray Heslip, Kathleen Scullion and Dean Bloemer shutting down ‘Brown Eyed Girl” before it could begin. I am SO proud of them. 2. Tuesday we moseyed over to The

Rusty Nail to play the Cape Resorts managers’ party. It was a little chilly so we set up our gear inside the outside bar (if that makes any sense). When everyone moved inside for dinner we moved our gear with them, and started playing just in time for everyone to move back outside. Harumph. Still, was a fun evening among fine folks and we look forward to being back there in November. I’m kind of liking this numbering my column thing. Why? 1. It gives the page a little visual pizazz. 2. It helps me remember where I was. 3. Now, where was I? This is your final reminder to come to the Rio Station this Friday for our annual Scary O’ke costume contest and song-singingpalooza! Costumes! Beer! Prizes! Beer! Karaoke! And beer! This is always one of the best Halloween parties in the area, and it’s my last Terry O’ke show for the foreseeable future. Being Halloween, if you don’t sing well you might get a lot of boos. (I know, but think about it; that joke works on several levels.) Ran into Leslie Weidel at Sunset Liquors

the other day. (Honestly, you can find her there most days, hanging out, asking people to get her a twelve of Bud and a pack of smokes because she looks 17…) She told me she’s now running her own business, Shore Soaps, a “soap and skin care boutique offering all natural, 100% vegan, cruelty-free products.” Damn hippies, I like my soap with the usual amount of cruelty! After trying to explain to me for 10 minutes where it’s located, we settled on “where the leather shop used to be across from City Hall.” She and co-owner Corinne Rietheimer will clean you up good. So stop in and support your local soap folk. Or visit their website, ShoreSoapsCapeMay.com. I hear they’re on the tech bubble. (Heh… soap jokes.) Dave Clemans and Jim Moffatt stopped into Exit Zero Filling Station (again) for a beer and a burger. No conspiratorial whisperings this week (as far as I could hear) but you just know they’re up to something. They got that look about them. (You probably can’t tell, but I’m writing this between tables at the Filling Station, where you can grab yourself a tasty breakfast, lunch or dinner. In groups of two to twenty. And all at once, apparently. Ooh, my aching feet! I do not envy my socks…) It was with no small amount of sadness that I informed my agent, Sarah Howell of the Reinhard Agency in Philadelphia, of my intention to retire from acting. Or at least from chasing down the small-time gigs I never seem to get. In no way is this meant to denigrate the many actors who make their living on these jobs. God bless ’em. It’s just… not for me any longer. Two-hour drive through city traffic for 30 seconds in front of the camera then two hours back home; not the path I’m willing to continue on. But rest easy... Larry Crinkle lives forever! I get the feeling that if I am ever to find real success as an actor it will be in something I write and produce, either from one of my existing short stories

October 25, 2018 or the original script I’m working on, Music Town, about an aging Cape May singer angling for his first break. I don’t know where the idea came from. It’s a gift, really. The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix) is the umpteenth adaptation of the classic Shirley Jackson tale of psychological horror. My favorite is the 1963 version with the ephemeral Julie Harris and impish Russ Tamblyn (who stole my heart as Riff in West Side Story), but this one is pretty solid… until the last few episodes turn into a Ted talk about love overcoming all and other such psuedo-intellectual gobbledygook. Still, it was worth the 10-hour investment, and there are a number of solid scares in the opening episodes. And Timothy Hutton bumps everything he’s in to an extra level. Speaking of Ted talks (nailed it!), I was pleased to be invited (thank you, Norris Clark) to the first Tedx Civic Dinner at the Filling Station last Sunday. The topic was, and I paraphrase, how to bridge the (very) wide political divide in our country. As the lone registered Republican in my group (in the restaurant? In the town? In the state?) I naturally disagreed with a few of my fellow talkers, and naturally received a lot of “so what you’re saying is Problem X doesn’t exist?” In reply... 1. I recognize that problems exist. I’m Republican, not blind. 2. I am simply not ready to cede total control of said problems to a government that can’t run the trains on time. 3. Trump is making you all crazy. 4. The salmon was excellent. Belated Joke of the Week: Randy Redelico at our Billy Joel show a couple of weeks ago, where my band, The Strangers, melted all the faces. “You guys know each other? I thought you were all Strangers?” That one goes in the Dad Joke Hall of Fame. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

H

ave you received your invite to the legendary D’Catur Halloween Costume Extravaganza? If not, look out this very day, for you are due a wonderful surprise! The hand-drawn invites were sent by skunk mail, a hilarious delivery method pioneered by my own laboratory. We bred and trained 300 of the creatures and sent them out wearing tiny leather saddlebags. Upon reaching their assigned house, the skunks will scrape at the door in menacing/creepy fashion, until it is opened, then scurry in and seek out ONLY the intended recipient (every skunk has been trained to recognized its particular invitee) and then stop and chitter until the person summons the courage to open a saddlebag. There are, of course, two saddlebags, and only one contains the invite. The person opening the correct one will receive a cheerful skunk smile, and the beast will run out. If you open the wrong one, you will be instantly sprayed in the face — at which point your invite will be brought home and a secondary invitee assigned. I am sure you

will agree that this is both entertaining AND in the spirit of Halloween? The event itself will be the usual modest D’Catur affair — ice sculptures, liquid gold fountain (with a warning sign up: last year we had someone attempt to dive in, and the end result was gratifyingly similar to that scene in the televisual documentary Game of Thrones, when the pale fop demanded the hairy oafs give him his crown), performing elephants, the entire cast of Cirque De Soleil, most members of Cats, and that Elton fellow.

The dress code is tartan, in memory of my late and unlamented grandmother, who claimed to be Bonnie Prince Charlie. She had a wicked right hook and a cruel sense of humor, but the lady knew how to dress. Her Sunday Best outfit, composed of 300 yards of Stewart tartan, was a confection like no other. It resembled nothing so much as the offspring of Alexander McQueen and an entire marching bagpipe band. You do not have to be too fancy — in fact, I usually prefer that my ensemble be the most eye-catching. I will not spoil the surprise, but let me drop the hint that I will be naked and have had the state’s best tattoo artists laboring on my rippling torso day and night for a month. I will not say which part of me will be a staggeringly accurate scale model of a set of bagpipes. But you are all welcome to come and have a toot. Young Albert, decked out like a plaid hound from a shortbread tin, will be on hand to mete out tiny savage justice to anyone arriving in blue Braveheart face, or trying an accent.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Boo at the Zoo

nimals have Halloween fun with Boo at the Zoo at Cape May County Zoo. Or maybe they don’t. Psychiatrists caution against ascribing human emotions to objects and animals. They warn that anthropomorphizing may indicate mental illness — as in, you can’t put a spoon in the drawer because the spoon doesn’t like the dark — or lead to danger, as when you get eaten by a “friendly” bear. Although new studies indicate strong social connections among dolphins, birds and elephants, there is no agreement that these are akin to human emotions. Our instinctive love for animals is not in doubt — infants are drawn to light that mimics animal movements more than other patterns from the time they are two days old, and veterinarians have seen the world’s strongest humans crumble over 20 pounds of fur. It’s their love for us that is in question. There is no question in my sister’s mind. She had a relationship with a cat named Rocky that was downright symbiotic. She’s convinced he loved her and not just because

she kept the keys to the kibble. My daughters think our dog loves them, but I’ve seen her fickle side, so I have doubts. There’s usually little harm in ascribing emotions to an animal, and zoos make the most of anthropomorphism at Halloween. The Oregon Zoo released spooky x-rays of some of their animals in a salute to seasonal gothic art, and the iguana and ball python look for all the world as if they enjoy posing. A hippopotamus at an Illinois zoo feasted with what looks like delight on pumpkins. Beluga whales at a Connecticut aquarium seem to be smiling

before they tear into their seasonal treats. Your little animals will surely enjoy Boo at the Zoo, and it will be educational. Kids naturally analyze similarities and differences among animals, and between animals and humans. Zoos also boost reading confidence because signs contain familiar words, and social skills, because the kids are not waiting for a psychiatrist’s permission to have full conversations with the lemurs. Adults will also have fun, because a golden frog never stops being magical, and a child dressed as a giraffe talking to a giraffe never stops being cute. Boo at the Zoo is Saturday, October 27 from 10am to 2pm at Cape May County Park and Zoo. Admission free. Visitors are encouraged to wear costumes and registration for the costume contest begins at 10. There will be entertainment, games, an obstacle course and plenty of candy. Remember you can’t bring any food into the zoo, but you can picnic in the park. Pack a cooler and a thermos of hot chocolate and leave it in the car.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady A couple of weeks ago I wrote to you about my phone sex partner. You described my friend as “non-committal” and said the situation was good as it was going to get. I showed the column to my friend and he said I should “watch what I say to you” and has broken off the relationship with me. This was not my goal. I only wanted to affirm that if our relationship works, it should be of no concern to my inquisitive friends. Now it is all topsy-turvy. How do I get him back? — Wrong Ending Dear Wrong The Answer Lady also recalls telling you that “you seem quite content” with the “relationship” and that should be enough for you and your inquisitive friends. The

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Answer Lady wonders why you would show him the column in the first place and then be surprised by a negative result, especially given that he is of the impression that The Answer Lady betrayed a confidence. Which she did not. Where exactly do you think this “relationship” is going and what have you actually lost if it is over? But no worries — he’ll be back. It’s the perfect scenario for a long-distance rendezvous. While you wait for his return, pop over to Dairy Queen and get yourself an extra-large Blizzard.

Dear Answer Lady I have been monitoring my 12-yearold daughter’s texts, because I have caught her in several lies about homework assignments and where she goes after school. I am not happy about the conversations or the potential problems I see down the road with her choice in friends, whose parents leave them home alone a lot more than I am comfortable with. Do I take her cell phone away and tell her why? — Super Spy Dear Spy Not yet. Then she knows you are “monitoring” her texts. Use the information to keep her safe. She has no right to privacy — she’s 12. Take your daughter to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House for a stack of pancakes and over maple syrup talk about the dangers young women face when they put themselves in peril as well as the most difficult life lesson of all — that people are not always as they seem, especially if they have parents who are not as diligent as you are. It may not seem like she is listening, but some of it will stick. If not — no cell.

The Movie Column

Y

Guest columnist Brock Armstrong reviews “A Star is Born”

ou should know the story of this remake (despite the last version being more than 40 years ago). In A Star is Born, a struggling singer (Lady Gaga) is about to give up on her career when a successful performer (Bradley Cooper) fast-tracks her career. Beautifully simple. Yet Cooper’s character struggles with issues that make their relationship complicated. Everybody from audiences to critics is raving about the film. Is it worth the hype? There’s no doubt Cooper gives an engaging and deep performance, and Lady Gaga’ singing is outstanding, of course. I appreciated the slow-burning infatuation between the two in the first half of the movie. But it seemed to get old as the film went on. Cooper is an accomplished actor who brings a broad range to his role. He’s green as a producer/director, but he pulled off a great deal — unique casting, raw engaging cinematography and admirable talent as a singer and musician. Some have said that Lady Gaga’s acting

The Cooper-Gaga chemistry is undeniable seemed effortless. I would agree. But to me she was not acting but rather “re-acting” to Cooper’s more-scripted lines in her normal personality as... Lady Gaga. This was more obvious later in the film when she appears with big hair and makeup with each scene. Lady Gaga’s performance at the outset had some sincere elements. But when she sings, there’s a power that comes through that would seem unavailable to the insecure, apprehensive character she portrays. There is a lot of Oscar buzz around this movie and as a fellow Philadelphian, I’m

rooting for Cooper. But there’s a lot of time between now and when the season closes. Regarding the category of best supporting actor, Sam Elliot has been mentioned. To me, his and Cooper’s characters were too similar — even for brothers. My vote for best supporting actor goes to... Andrew Dice Clay? I can’t believe I just said that, but his role as Gaga’s father was endearing, restrained and subtle — and if you are familiar with the performer, you will know he’s not known for subtlety. Dave Chappelle is another pleasant surprise in the film and moves away from his signature, wirey persona to give us a deeper performance. This movie seemed longer than needed to be. For the first hour, I was engaged — for the second hour, I was shifting in my seat. And it appeared to end several times before it ended. The relationship between Cooper and Gaga is charming, but I was looking for a little range of emotion. Not perfect, but certainly worth the view to see a “star” born again.

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

n October 12 I witnessed something I never dreamed of seeing. The oneday American kestrel record of 5038 was shattered with a total at day’s end of 5,406. What makes this amazing is the plight of America’s smallest, jauntiest falcon. For nearly 30 years, kestrel numbers have been in steep decline. Some authorities point to the worldwide decline in large insects, kestrels’ primary food resource. Others blame a shortage of cavity nests. All I can say is that the October 12 flight was as affirming as it was exciting, with 300 people on the hawk watch platform. While I have witnessed more than my share of great migratory flights, I have only once shared one with so many admirers. That was the day Hawk Mountain Sanctuary tallied their one millionth bird. The day I set the broad-winged hawk record of 9,400 birds, way back in 1977, there were only four other people present to witness the moment. This time hundreds will be able to say: “I was there.” Don’t despair, there are still plenty of hawk-watching days ahead.Watch

the Weather Channel and listen for the magical words “a cold front will pass and strong northwest winds will dominate.” Call in sick, cancel your golf outing — magic without witnesses is just natural phenomena. It’s you and your enthusiasm that turn epic events, into memorable events. Dress warmly, the wind will drive the chill into you. And remember sun screen. The November sun still packs a punch. If you are not a skilled field birder, relax... the interns at the hawk watch have you cov-

ered. Count on them to call out the birds and to provide loaner binoculars. In no time you’ll be telling sharp-shinned hawks from Coopers and red-taileds from red-shouldereds. If you don’t, it doesn’t diminish the spectacle. Savor the passage of birds and try not to be in the way when someone shouts “golden eagle!” There is still one major question hanging over that October 12 flight — the paucity of sharp-shinned hawks. I saw less than 20. Once accounted our most numerous raptor migrant, their near total absence that day was downright eerie. But Sharp-shinneds, too, have been declining. One can only hope their population has not reached a tipping point. More questions than answers, that’s science, and it explains why year after year it is important to keep counting. You never know when another DDT crisis is going to come along. You can only hope you perceive a problem in time to address it. Raptors are truly our canaries in the coal mine. But if all you want is to be inspired by these magnificent birds, you’ll find yourself in good company

Congratulations PHILLY & SINA! Now 5 Deva curly girl specialists to serve you!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

AUSTIN is a 5 year old Beagle who lived in a household with multiple dogs, cats, and children. He is at the shelter because his owner passed away and family members could not accommodate the number of animals living in the home. This is a nice beagle who has hit a rough spot and he needs a loving home. Stop by the shelter and adopt today!

NORMAN was brought into the shelter as a stray and has quickly made his presence known through his happy personality. He loves running in the yard and chasing toys, although he hasn’t quite gotten the idea of returning them! Norman needs a family that will give him some “tender loving care” and continue his training. Adopt today!

MARCY is about 6 months old and arrived at the shelter as a stray. Although she is playful and friendly, she has not had any training. Marcy will make a good pet for someone who has the time and energy for training. She is very young and good natured. Marcy will be best placed in an adult household or one with more mature children. Adopt today!

“ The entire time you were always professional, kowledgeable, and helpful. You were consistently upbeat and when things did not work out you would say, ”don’t give up, the right one is out there and you will find it.” You were correct and eventually we found that right one for us. We appreciate the fact that you always promptly responded to texts, emails, and phone calls and answered all of the questions we had no matter what they were.“
