Hallowed Be Thy Name! Six-hundred-and-sixty-six runners participated in the first annual Hallowed Half Marathon, put on by Cape May Running Company. (Yes, 666 was an intentional part of the spooky theme.) And although the runners faced scary nor’easter conditions, including winds gusting to 60 miles per hour, the 13.1-mile race received rave reviews for its top-notch organization. A date, October 26, has already been locked down for next year’s event.

What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three. Call 609770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
C
Our special correspondent gives the lowdown on last week’s Cape May election candidates debate
onfession: I seek out Hallmark Christmas movies. Lately I’ve been eating that cheesy stuff up. Apparently it IS a thing. I read a story that stated people who were traumatized or disenfranchised by our societal/political divide were craving the dreamy, smalltown Americana that the Hallmark Channel serves up — especially at Christmas. Yes, there are only a couple of plots used for hundreds of movies. One involves the small town Christmas parade being imperiled, usually by a Scrooge-like business mogul, who then sees the light of day and the parade is saved! (Also: A handsome man and a pretty woman, who despised each other at the start of the movie, fall in love at the end.) I’m thinking of this right now because our own parade is coming up fast. And, no, the West Cape May Christmas Parade (which is exactly as old as I am — 53) is NOT in peril. But... it survives completely on donations. The good people who run the borough don’t spend taxpayers’ money on the event. This past Monday, we hosted a fun
As well as our own annual event, the Chalfonte Hotel and Fins hold fundraisers. “Even if all the businesses that stay open in December donated $100, that would make a huge difference,” says Carol. How can individuals help? Drop off cash or a check (or mail one) at 732 Broadway, West Cape May. But the easiest way? Donate via Paypal on either westcapemay.us or the borough’s Facebook page. I stayed away from endorsements for the upcoming local elections — partly because I haven’t been sticking my nose into Cape May politics since mayor Chuck Lear brought democracy back to City Hall and partly because Exit Zero Filling Station sucks up every minute I have. But PLEASE... use your vote on Tuesday, November 6! Cape May said goodbye recently to a lovely fellow called Jim Schultz, one half of the beloved JimBob couple. It won’t be the same in The Brown Room, Lucky Bones etc without Jim, but for his partner Bob Epaldo, there’s a lot of love out there for you... see you around town soon, Bob.
³ Halloween dinner at Exit Zero Filling Station which raised $2,000 for the parade. It’s something we gladly do every year. The parade brings a Hallmark-type glow to the island. And, in tandem with the tree-lighting that marks the beginning of Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland, the first weekend in December provides a big boost to businesses. West Cape May mayor Carol Sabo told me that 9,500 watched the parade last year, many of whom also took advantage of all the restaurants, stores (and accommodations).

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Stephanie Sharp from The Mad Batter is up. How long have you been bartending? 12 years. Favorite drink to serve? A margarita because I make them well and I love tequilla. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers don’t look up from their phones when they’re ordering. How rude! Biggest tip you ever received? $500 from a group of boat captains when I bartended in Ft. Lauderdale.
BEER OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co King Porter Stomp - ABV: 7.4% A nitro variation of King Porter Stomp only smoother and silkier. With the natural chocolate in perfect syncopation with the five different malts that make up the bass line of this robust beast, its medium body more like a chocolate milkshake.
WINE OF THE WEEK
Sunset Liquors Line 39 Cabernet - $13.99 Exhibits expressive fruit flavors of currant, blackberry and ripe plum with hints of dark chocolate on the palate. Rich and approachable, this wine can be enjoyed with a variety of roasted and grilled meats.
Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that sea bass are in season. Did you know that sea bass are hermaphrodites, functioning first as females and then as males? This sex reversal may not occur in all fish, and the absence of large males may induce some large females to assume the male role.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Steph, Gabby and Kaite from Cape May who all work at Lace Silhouettes on Washington Street Mall. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Elvis Presley.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
nce again I come to you live from the Exit Zero Filling Station… Well, not LIVE live. But… you know what I mean. Spooky cobwebs and skeletons adorn our cozy little restaurant as we gear up for our big Halloween party, which is masquerading as a fundraiser for the West Cape May Christmas parade. (Masquerade? Halloween? Get it?) Anyway, it’s sure to be a ghastly good time. And I’d invite you to come join the festivities but, uh, it was Monday. But it’s never too early to make your reservations for the 2019 party! Assuming we all survive the midterms. (UPDATE: The party was last night, it was a smashing success, and I’d tell you more about it but I’m already past my deadline.) Swing by the Filling Station for a hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner. When you do, get the Thai shrimp soup, the Cray Cray burger and the lobster Thai curry. Everything on the menu is yummy — those are just extra yummy with a side of mmm mmm mmm. If you’re lucky, you might get an attractive young server. Otherwise, you might get me.
Last Friday brought an end to my tenure at Rio Station, where I’ve been hosting karaoke on Fridays pretty much continuously since 2005. It was our annual Scary O’ke Halloween party which, again, I’d invite you to, except that it happened a few days ago… but 2019! I went as Slutty Karaoke Host (Okay, I actually went as Michael Myers, the serial killer from Halloween, not the washed-up comedian who became a volcano of cringe next to Kanye West, but Slutty Karaoke Host is just funnier. SIDE NOTE: A Michael Myers mask with no mouth hole greatly reduces

one’s ability to drink beer.) and had a blast as friends old and new showed up to wish me a fond-ish farewell. Victoria Defrancisco took home the Best Overall costume prize with her extremely authentic take on Harley Quinn (which included clubbing this columnist several times over the head with an oversized mallet, which I probably deserved). Francis “Don’t Call Me Francis” Mikulak went home with funniest costume with a very good Bob Ross look. (Ross is the late PBS painter famous for being, well, for being Bob Ross, the most chill fellow on the planet.) Alvin Shapiro, a pretty scary fellow without make-up, took home the scariest prize for his Captain Spaulding get-up. This would be Captain Spaulding from movies like House of 1000 Corpses, not the wacky Captain Spalding of Marx Brothers fame. (My movie knowledge is extensive, and pointless.) There was also a prize for sexiest costume but I don’t even know who won it because I just don’t look at people through that prism. I’m sorry if this makes me better

than you, it’s just how I am. My favorite costume of the night was Andre the Vocal Giant’s; Andre in Raincoat. He, uh, he didn’t win any prizes. All in all, a fitting send-off from my longest-tenured gig (I feel like I’m using a lot of hyphens this week — does it feel like a lot of hyphens to you?). And as so many people have asked, I will answer: The decision to leave was mine. Ricky, Jimmy, Tami, everyone at the Rio, has been great to me. So don’t be mad at any of them. It was because I like them so much that I decided a hiatus was in order, as it began to feel like stealing during the slow nights, which had begun to far outnumber the busy ones. So we’re going to take some time, regroup, and figure out if there’s a way to get this thing rocking again. Rio was one of my busiest gigs in my 2005-2009 karaoke heyday. There’s no reason we can’t bring it back to that level again in the future. So it’s just farewell for now, not goodbye. (I’m not crying, you’re crying.) Congratulations to Firecracker Rebecca Sundstrom. (A Firecracker is a TNT groupie. TNT is an acoustic duo featuring myself and Tim Joyce.) Becca has not only recently joined the team at Coastline Realty in Cape May, which I’m sure she’ll be great at, but she is also charging headlong into pursuing modeling and acting on a more full-time basis. (Be careful Becca; those nudes always come back to haunt you. I’m told. Ahem.) So best of luck to you, young lady. To me, you’ll always be Princess Dandelion (The Mostly Dead). And Carolina Franklin (Young Dracula). And Regina Stabbey (Downton Stabbey). And Lucrezia the Gypsy (Sherlock Holmes & the Baffled Butlers). And Isabelle Fezziwig (Scrooge). There’s a couple I’m forgetting, but you get the idea. The Hallowed Half (a half-marathon) wound its way through Cape May last weekend, with the route bring all the runner (and a few walkers) right down Sunset and past the Exit Zero Filling Station. I really felt
November 1, 2018 for those poor men and women, running 13.1 miles in the rain, as I sipped my coffee and lit a cigarette. And really? A half-marathon? What’s the point? (Sincerely... congratulations to all the finishers. I have a goal of entering that race next year.) I had a couple of decent jokes written up about uber-commie, pinko hippie T.J. Belasco (and his lovely wife Myra, who makes T.J. look like Sean Hannity), but they tipped me really well Monday night. So, no jokes. Same goes for my man Zach Toll, food and beverage manager over at The Rusty Nail. I was going to pick on his beard but I’m not sure if it’s a fashion or religious choice, so I’ll leave it alone. You know I’d hate to offend anyone. (See you on the 23rd, Zach, when TNT makes its triumphant return to the Nail.) Speaking of TNT, we had ourselves a regular hootenanny at The Brown Room last Sunday. (ALSO, why isn’t a group of owls called a hootenanny? Missed opportunity.) The usual suspects were on hand to ply us with alcohol (Randy and Wendy Redelico. DING!), while my friends Maryse and Howard Selit, long-time karaoke enablers, caught my acoustic act for the first time, Maryse even joining us for a rousing “Me & Bobby Magee.” How hype was it? So hype that the burly Irishman who offered us a stack of cash to keep playing took the fight all the way to upper management, where he was eventually talked down by Congress Hall’s welltrained staff, who handled the situation with aplomb. TNT. We make people crazy. Dear, long-time friends (see? Hyphens!) Ed and Teresa Henry are the best people I know at making sure you feel loved by sending cards out for, literally, every holiday. They are also the worst at remembering to put any money in them. (Got your Halloween card. Thanks! Also, who sends out Halloween cards? These guys, that’s who.) ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, walking the cape
alking is a proven way to improve your health, and autumn is a great time to get moving. Just 20 minutes a day is all it takes to boost your immune system, and 10 minutes outside is enough to cut stress and improve concentration. Plus, you are much less likely to want to slap your annoying coworker, which is especially important if you work alone at home. Sunlight is also your best weapon against seasonal affective disorder, and Cape May’s beauty helps to soothe your soul. Summer’s humidity has yielded to crisp, breathable air and changing foliage gives you something new to look at every day. Walk the streets and take a long, leisurely look at the architecture that draws tourists from around the world. Bare branches make your neighborhood’s treasures easier to see. As a bonus, you may encounter new friends to make you smile, like the refrigerator-sized dog who sits in my neighbor’s window like a cat; or the little boy I saw practicing his trick or treating two weeks ahead of Halloween. Naturally,
a few neighbors were happy to reward his efforts. Park your car near the cove (meters are off after November 1) and march along the promenade. Skip the headphones and let the sound of the waves to keep you company. Dress in layers — the wind is chilly, but you’ll work up a sweat. You’ll still need sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Turn inland and tramp the streets, window shopping and making your Christmas list. Find your way to an unfamiliar section of town and steal decorating ideas from your new favorite houses.
Or, skip the streets and walk on Cape May’s wild side. Explore the South Cape May Meadows, where cows once grazed, and listen for the echoes of cottages lost to mid-20th century storms. The Nature Conservancy, the Army Corps of Engineers and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection cleared out the phragmites and restored the freshwater wetlands in 2004. Walk through Cape May Point State Park and put the lighthouse in the background of your pictures. Look for birds and animals while you enjoy the smell and sound of the ocean. Explore the boardwalks and shell trails of the wildlife refuge at Two Mile Landing. No pets, kites or picnicking, just maritime forest so you can pretend you’ve taken a trip back in time. In autumn, you don’t have to worry about clouds of gnats or mosquitos buzzing about, but experts say you should still wear tick repellent. Deer ticks are known to wake up thirsty on warm days, even after the first frost. Tuck in your socks, wear long sleeves, and check yourself and your dog after walking through wooded paths.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My friends and I have a mutual acquaintance whose cat was going blind and needed an operation, which the acquaintance could not afford. She started a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money and about 20 of us contributed. I don’t think anyone gave more than $20 but it has been two years. The cat is still blind and she still has our money. Should we confront her or let it go? — Taken Dear Taken Two thoughts. One: Caveat Emptor (Latin for Let the Buyer Beware). But that begs the question — should good-hearted people be made to feel as though they made a mistake in trusting this person? The Answer Lady thinks not. Second: The Answer Lady’s father used to say, “It’s
Wise answers to perplexing questions
worth it sometimes to have the person not pay you back,” or in this case, not fulfill their promise. She can never ask you or your friends for money again and expect to have the same generous result. Mark it off as a bad debt from an ethically challenged person. And by the way, poor kitty. Why don’t you and your friends go to one of Beach Plum Farm’s Guest Chef Dinners. Enjoy the farm-to-table dinner and a lovely bottle of wine from Sunset Liquors to top off a nice evening celebrating your
generosity while reviewing your vetting process for the next time. Dear Answer Lady Twelve years ago, I fell in love with a man I thought was going to be my husband. He abruptly dumped me and married another woman. Now, that marriage is over and he has reached out to me on Facebook, knowing I am a recent widow. I have never fell out of love with him but I am not sure I want to open myself up to the possibility that he could do the same thing. Still, I am so tempted to meet him, go out with him and then dump him. Please tell me that is the wrong road to travel on. — Avenger Dear Avenger Revenge is a dessert best served cold. But you don’t sound cold. And what kind of revenge is that? It’s been 12 years, girl. Move on. It sounds like you went on to have a happy marriage and he — not so much. Go to Victorious, get a sexy outfit, round up a friend and go to The Brown Room for cocktails, music and the prospect of meeting someone deserving of your love.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ell, the 72nd Cape May Autumn Bird Festival is history. If you were there, you went home awed by the astonishing natural dowery that is Cape May’s. If you missed it, you can still get a taste of autumn here. Over three hundred bird species were tallied and the number of yellow-rumped warblers was enough to instill caution in pedestrians and came close to making bird watching a contact sport. But the real story was the volume of tree swallows. Challenged by one weekend participant to put a number to one swirling flock, I came up with 12-14,000 birds. Then there are the legions of scoter that are migrating down both sides of the peninsula in skeins of 50 to 300 birds. The scoter flocks pass each other as they round the tip of the peninsula. I often wonder what goes through a duck’s mind at such a meeting. It’s clear somebody’s going the wrong way. But insofar as Delaware Bay is the destination for many of these mollusk-eating
birds, the confusion is likely momentary. Hawks? Plenty. And while fall hawk migration is winding down, November is still prime time, the month burley buteos and eagles take center stage. Bunker Pond, in front of the hawk watch platform, is shore-to-shore waterfowl. American wigeon, dapper gadwall and mallards dominate, but in the ranks observers can find ruddy ducks, ringnecked ducks, northern pintails and other less common species. The best thing about
ducks is their array of plumage. The next best thing is their penchant for swimming out in the open where they are easily viewed. Unlike warblers, who hide in the bushes, ducks play fair, which is good news for those new to bird watching. Owls? Yes, owls are migrating, too. Be the first to navigate the trails at Cape May point State Park and you may catch a glimpse of a long-eared owl, snugged up against a tree trunk, ear tufts erect — the cryptically plumaged birds look like part of the forest itself. It takes patience and very sharp eyes to find roosting owls. Being alert to the scolding calls of chickadees and jays often pays off. They have better eyes than we do so let them do the work. Another technique is to stand in the South Cape May Meadows at dusk and scan the twilight sky to the west. Owls getting up to continue their migration will be silhouetted against the glow. Light northerly winds are best. Owls don’t like buffeting winds.
