First Annual HalfHallowed Marathon P31-42

Exit Zero’s annual West Cape May Christmas Parade fundraiser October 29 raised $2,000 for the cause. The sold-out, three-course dinner featured costumed servers, spooky music, a witch’s brew amuse bouche ladled from a cauldron and, of course, Halloweenthemed decor. From lightup skeletons in the fireplace to a cobwebbed dining room, local artist Mike DeMusz helped us bring the theme to life. Now, the Exit Zero Filling Station is busy preparing for the holiday on deck by tweaking a special turkey curry recipe. The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. How popular is Instagram? It’s the world’s fastest growing social media platform, and more than 16 billion photos have been uploaded to the site since its launch. If you don’t already, what are you waiting for? Local Landmark

Ryan Howard, former Phillies first baseman and current grand slam record holder, paid a visit to the Cape May County Zoo last summer. We always knew that place batted 1,000. Zing! Howard is also the author of six children’s books.

The results are in! The average number of monarch butterflies counted per hour by census takers at Cape May’s Monarch Monitoring Project this year was 47.1. That’s down from last year (94.09) but up from 2016 (14.71).

Since 1990, Flying Fish Studio on Park Boulevard has been conceiving of and screenprinting their own offbeat clothing designs inspired by life on the Cape. Their apparel pays homage to the island’s beach vibe as well as its storied agricultural past. Flying Fish is also responsible for some of the coolest shirts at the Lima Bean Festival (“Bean me up, Scotty!”). Check out their line of Merry Fishmas tees before the holiday. If you’re in need of customprinted, sustainable apparel, get in touch.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 22. A man kills his wife and hides the body in some bushes. The next day the police call and say his wife has been murdered and tell the man to come to the crime scene right away. As soon as the man gets there he is arrested. Why?

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

am writing this before the election results were announced so I hope that three excellent candidates were elected to Cape May City Council (sorry, Lower, but there just isn’t time to get involved with you, too) and that the kind of dirty tactics seen during the campaign are a thing of the past. Onwards and upwards, as they say. I want to mention two wonderful events, one of which happens this weekend and one of which happens at the end of January. Many talented usicians will be hitting town this weekend for Exit Zero Jazz Festival. I’ve said it before and it bears repeating... you do NOT have to be a jazz fan to love this festival. I’m not, but I do love music, and I especially love events that bring thousands of people to town in the offseason, helping to keep our stores and restaurants in business. The jazz geeks among you are already primed about what’s going on, so I’m going to give a shout-out to some performers who will entice everyone. Don’t miss Davina and the Vagabonds. This Minnesotabased whirlwind has already shaken the

town during previous festivals. This time up, she’s at Carney’s on Saturday at 8:45pm and 10:45pm; and on Sunday at 3:45pm and 5:45pm. Then there’s Conjunto, a raucous Philadelphia ensemble who bang out pre-Revolutionary Cuban tunes. They play Cabanas on Friday at 6pm and 7:45pm; are back there on Saturday at noon; and they’re at the Ugly Mug on Sunday at 7:55pm. I bet you’ll also love Brother Joscephus, playing Cabanas on Friday at 9:30pm and

11:15pm; and on Sunday at the Ugly Mug at noon and 4:45pm. For more information, visit exitojazzfest.com. And please note that, although we are a proud sponsor, we do not organize the event or sell tickets. Call 609-849-9202. As for another great weekend, a lot of people have been calling up and asking about the Exit Zero Burns Supper. We will still be holding a big event at Cape May Convention Hall, on Saturday, January 26, with catering once again by the Washington Inn (who did an amazing job last year). But we will also be having a Scots-Indian dinner at Exit Zero Filling Station on the Friday plus a whisky tasting and movie (the wonderful Scots tale Angel’s Share) at Cape May Stage. We are still working out ticket details — check our Facebook page for more information. I’m really excited about this. I’m also very happy to say that we have an official sponsor, Robert Burns Whisky. Given that Robert Burns is the reason for this whole shebang, that’s pretty appropriate.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Robin Sutton from Lucky Bones is up. How long have you been bartending? Six years. Favorite drink to serve? A cosmo. It’s one of my favorite drinks to drink so I know how they should taste! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers snap their fingers to get your attention. If you’re one of those people, stop doing this! No bartender likes it. Biggest tip you ever received? $100.

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co BBA Concrete Ship - ABV: 10.10% Full-bodied Russian Imperial Stout, with notes of cocoa and coffee, subtle roastiness and a silky smooth mouthfeel. Laid in freshly dumped 7-year Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels. With the oak and vanillins pulling out a rich, velvety texture.

Collier’s Liquor Store Zerran Spanish - $14.99 This full bodied red is a blend of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Syrah. Layers of blackberry, smoke and spice abound throughout. Enjoy with pasta or various red meat dishes.

Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that scallops are in season. Did you know that each ring on a scallop’s shell represents a year of growth, although a ring might also record a stressful incident in the scallop’s life? Also, scallops have eyes that enable them to perceive and respond to shadow and movement.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Mr and Mrs Danielle Antonelli who are preschool teachers from Philadelphia who were browsing the mall when they were ambushed. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Frank Sinatra. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

ot gonna lie. It was a little weird not hosting karaoke last Friday... In other news, had a fantastic time at Exit Zero Filling Station Halloween shindig last Monday. All manner of Cape May royalty was on hand to have dinner and drinks and support an awesome event — the West Cape May Christmas Parade, which for generations has thrilled and delighted children of all ages, and infuriated drivers of every nationality. But, seriously, the parade is a great event that brings 1000s of people to town, giving a nice shot in the arm to many local businesses at just the right time of year. And we were happy to do our part to pitch in. Waiting tables dressed as Michael Myers, however, was a bad choice. Speaking of holiday doings (segue master, I), TNT Acoustic (me and Tim Joyce. Tim Joyce and I? Eh…) will be playing prior to the Congress Hall tree lighting on Friday, November 30, laying down all your Christmas favorites. Joining us will be Terry Dougherty and his fine-ass stand-up bass, along with Rachel Husta and her… vocals.

TNT: Christmas Edition will be playing outside by the tree from 7-8, after which we’ll be joined by the Congress Hall Choir as the tree is lit. In true Congress Hall style, there will be a load of activities for everyone to partake in. Congress Hall does a lot of things well. Christmas is near the top of that list. Got to meet longtime Undertow admirer Greg Owens last week over a Decadent Burger at EZFS (his daughter had the Big Country breakfast bowl; both are equally yummy in their own ways). Things were going just fine until he asked to swap out his

waffle fries for tater tots. I don’t even know where to begin... Cheryl Patten Wu is having an art show at the Mad Batter, opening reception December 9. It’s called “Sisters of the Sea: Retablos.” (A retablo, in Mexican folk art, is a devotional painting. Thank you, Mr Google.) Cheryl was formerly the costume designer at Cape May Stage. I knew I’d heard her name before, during several of my job interviews there for which I did not get hired. I could write a book about the jobs I didn’t get… Speaking of Exit Zero Filling Station customers, had the pleasure of meeting Steve and Mary Jane Enoch. They said lots of nice things about how this column has made them laugh over the years, which is strange because this is all supposed to be super-serious, but that’s neither here nor there. They told me how they used to bring the grand kids to Kiddy O’ke in the Boiler Room some years back. In exchange for their kindness, I gifted them with the final copy of my book, Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales, a

heartbreaking work of staggering genius according to my mom. (She’s dead now, so no arguing.) FYI, Murder-Oke is still available on Amazon for $.01. A bargain at twice the price! Barely avoided a death-by-homicide vehicular attack by Matt Reeves outside Sunset Liquors on Thursday. He came wheeling in with a huge tree branch sticking out of his door. Now, I knew Matt was a hippie tree-hugger, I just did not know to what extent he took it. Pretty far, it seems. (I’ll be filing charges at The Mad Batter, where Matt shakes his thangs.) Had a brief email exchange with EZ honcho Jack Wright about a new Sherlock story I’m working on (either for the magazine or, more enticingly, a second book that will take 10 years to sell out its print run). Anyway, I’m adapting my original script for Sherlock Holmes and the Werewolf of London into a novella. The centerpiece song of that show (a musical) was “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes. And what song came on Pandora during that five-minute window? Between 50s classics “Stagger Lee” and “Cathy’s Clown”? You guessed it. “White Winter Hymnal.” Weird, right? If only it was some kind of a sign… Congress Hall’s own Jeannie Ronk and pal Julie Yeager popped in for dinner Thursday night around 6 o’clock. And left at around 9 o’clock. They had the Mushroom Masala (Jeannie) and Grilled Salmon (Julie). And that’s when things went a little sideways. There was a 15-minute debate over which milkshake to get for dessert, the Strawberry Shortcake or Black & White. To settle this dispute, I brought them both but only charged for one (don’t tell Jack). This was followed by several hours of “Girl Talk.” Ever seen one of those time-lapse photographs where the flower is planted, blooms then dies? I was that flower. I’d say more, but they tipped well. And by “they” I mean “Julie.” (Thank you, ladies! You’re welcome to sit and kibbutz any

November 8, 2018 time!) Later that evening, yet somehow still before Jeannie and Julie left, I served Kelsey Graham and her mom, Karen McKee. I’ve known Kelsey for 12 years but didn’t recognize her in her pretty dress, smart glasses and noticeably slimmer frame. (Also in my defense; I usually see her surrounded by eightyear-olds in tutus, in a Cape May Dancers T-shirt and yoga pants, sweat across her brow.) It’s so weird seeing people out of context, isn’t it? Oh well. Catch you all at synagogue! It has come to my attention that there is some internal strife brewing in the AP English Department at LCMR High School between teachers T.J. Belasco and Chris Vitale. Apparently one has been getting a too much publicity lately (not sure where) and the other is feeling a little left out and tensions are rising. This is the West Side Story of the nerdiest timeline. Lastly this week, a big congratulations is in order for the LCMRHS cast of Taming of the Shrew. Shakespeare is no joke. Difficult stuff. Made more difficult by my son Owen jumping around like Batman all night and spouting off ad-libs and breaking the fourth wall like… some other actor I know. Middle son Jackson also acquitted himself nicely and only broke into dance twice during this non-dance, non-musical show. (Honestly, I had him pegged for five or six jazz-tap solos.) Evan Warburton, Aaron Agostino, Quinn Dougherty, Evan Smilyk, Reid Shriver, Avery White, Ryleigh McKeown, Ava Reichle and all the others I’m running out of room to mention, you should all be very proud of yourselves. It won’t get any harder than that. (If anyone is listening, Guys & Dolls would be an amazing show for this group. And, uh, I know a pretty good director…) Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to get back to The McCain Funeral. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

am not one for elections. I mean, where would we be in dear Cape May if my own position was subject to the whims of the great unwashed? Why, I’d be no better than a common mayor, and who wants that? Not that my position is encumbered by anything as mundane as a title. I tend to think we D’Caturs are a type of local president, able to dip in and out of city life where we judge it to be most beneficial to the city, unfettered by law or conscience. Also, when you give every ass a vote, what do they do? They waste it, in the same way as if you gave them a $100 bill and bade them walk past a candy store. Most of you, my dear friends, might pop in and spend a small quantity of that money on some saltwater taffy, and the rest would go on a nice facial, or a new pair of spats. But some maroons would go in and spend the whole lot on a short-lived sugar high, to be seen capering and spinning in the street, yelling like loons, before collapsing and vomiting. The notion of one man, one vote, has had its day. Of course, not for us, the notion of a dic-

Adored by Visitors...

tator: we have tried that, here in Cape May, and it was an ugly thing, where one bemedaled poltroon was displaced by another, who was assassinated by the next, who in turn was poisoned by his own replacement. And so on. That is how we ended up with Barry, the Monkey King. The older readers will remember Barry, a strutting, barrel-chested muscular primate with a short temper, not unlike a certain newspaper editor I know and love. Well, in the end, he had to go and ended up on the wall of the trophy room of

the D’Catur Mansion, from where he glares at all and sundry, with glassy eyes. As for Barry, I am not sure what happened to him in the end: I hear he moved to Wildwood, where he is worshipped as the wisest person in town, and also the least hirsute. But from now on, we are done with elections, and instead, the person who rules Cape May will be the one who wins in that ultimate test of skill, cunning and patience: whack-a-mole. Yes, every summer the contest will take place, with the winner taking the crown and runners-up being dispatched by the very same wooden mallet, to make sure there are no pesky coup attempts. And at the end of the year, the much loved monarch will be taken under a specially design whack-a-mole board, and when the would-be heirs are taking their turns, the outgoing ruler will pop up alongside the moles, to be ceremonially sent off in some style and only a medium amount of mess and screaming. Thus the new ruler will be blooded early in the process.

It’s a necessary nutrient, but not all salt is created equal. Try the Yakima-Applewood salt...it’s delicious!

Yes, they have their own house blended olive oil for you to purchase. Containing one Greek, one Italian, one Spanish, it’s packed with flavor.

All the white balsamic vinegars are interesting, but the White Pineapple version makes a salad dressing you won’t soon forget.

The Activity Column

N

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, company is coming

ovember kicks off prime entertaining season, and sometimes it feels overwhelming. It’s tempting to let hosting fall to the bottom of your crowded priority list. The thing is, you do love your friends and family, and you likely feel more connected to them after they visit. Call up your tribe and invite them to dinner. It doesn’t have to be fancy. If you’re struggling with grief or illness, juggling small children, or you just don’t have the energy, host pizza night. Dim the lights, light some candles and ignore the dust in the corners. When your friends ask what they can bring, be honest. It is a gift to let someone help you, so tell them what you need, even if it’s toilet paper, a quart of milk or hearing aid batteries. It’s not just a performance, this gathering together of people. It’s a necessary thing, and it’s the only way to get through life’s tough times. On the other hand, when things are going well, it’s fun to channel Martha Stewart. (Can you channel a living person? I’m not up on my channeling etiquette.) Use

Cape May products to set a relaxing atmosphere. Clean the house — treat yourself to professional help, if possible. Call Western Pest Services if your deep cleaning turns up any uninvited guests. Incense from Good Sense will help you set the mood. Decorate the blank spaces with the help of Madame’s Port. Add seasonal decor from Cape May Wicker or Import Bazaar. Dress your table with vintage dishes from Out of the Past Antiques. Upgrade your towels with a trip to the Cape May Linen Outlet. Remember that some friends will reach into the linen closet

to “save” the towels hanging on the towel rack, and you don’t want your BFF to end up with a hole-y towel. Get creative with your soaps and shampoos with the help of A Place on Earth and Bath Time. Stock the medicine chest with supplies from Cape May Market, like Deep Pain Healing Skin Salve to soothe the aching muscles after the “friendly” football game gets rough. In the kitchen, use oils and pastas from Cape May Olive Oil Company, flavors from the Spice Cellar of Cape May and desserts from the Cape May Peanut Butter Company. Set up a coffee bar with Cape May Roasters from Love the Cook and offer sweeteners from the Cape May Honey Farm. Stock up on wines, spirits and beers from Cape May’s local producers, or ask the experts at Collier’s, Sunset Liquors, or the Wine Cellar. Buy fresh fish from a local supplier like the Lobster House and fresh meat from Westside Market or Gaiss’ Market. If you’re too tired to cook after all of that preparation, ask if your favorite restaurant offers catering. Then, connect with your people.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady It’s nearly Thanksgiving and again my adult children expect me to cook. Three children, their spouses and they each have three kids, ranging in age from two to 12. Before my husband died two years ago, I was happy to do it and it gave me pleasure. Now, I cannot bear the thought of it. The work. The organization. And, more importantly, the toll it takes on me physically. I guess the difference is that my husband was my partner in everything, including in the kitchen. We would share a mimosa while stuffing the turkey. We basted it together, carved it together and always had a glass of wine together just before we served the turkey. I need to break this tradition. Please tell me how to do it. — Turkey Angst

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Angst Perhaps if you give yourself a reprieve from this for a couple of years, you might feel differently. However, your children aren’t toddlers. They are grownups and should be helping you, if not hosting the dinner themselves. You are correct, it’s time to pass the torch. And this is why god created reservations. The Merion Inn, the Blue Pig and Aleathea’s all serve a fine feast and are prepared for big parties. IF your children don’t like going out, let them step up.

Dear Answer Lady I’ve asked my mother to watch my two young children while I go out of town on a business seminar. Although she is going to do it, I can tell it is not willingly. My husband is a great father, but a poor time manager and he is not up to the task of getting them ready for daycare and preschool; packing lunches; and getting them to school on time. Am I asking too much? — Frustrated Dear Frustrated They are her grandchildren, but they are your children. She raised hers and perhaps does not want déjà vu all over again. The problem is your husband. Why are you enabling him? Help him set up a schedule he can follow while you are home and can continue in your absence. You appear to have three children, not two. Your mother is not at fault. Your inability to deal with the real issue is the point. Go to Good Scents and buy a journal so that you and your husband can track your time in getting the little ones ready. Bring the kids into it so they can help and you can take the tension down.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ow it’s down to ducks. Fall migration, I mean. Most of the Northern Hemisphere’s songbirds and raptors have fled south. Ducks and geese that migrate and winter just ahead of winter’s reach among are the last birds to bail out of the north. Migrating sea ducks are still being seen in the hundreds at the Avalon Sea Watch, located on the northeastern corner of the town. The town’s “cooler by a mile” seaward jut causes many southbound coastal migrants to press close to shore, allowing good views for observers with binoculars and spotting scopes. Continuing into February, this annual exodus also includes numbers of red-throated loons and northern gannet. Less challenging to view are the hundreds of ducks and geese festooned across Bunker Pond in Cape May Point State Park or scattered in the array of ponds in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows. Yes, there are lots of mallards, but scattered among their green-headed ranks are rakish pintails, dapper gadwall,

and American wigeon, a favorite of mine. Showing gray heads and ruddy sides, these compact dabbling ducks communicate with a comical, two-note whistle. Among the “dabbling” ducks, you’ll find “divers” — most notably ruddy ducks, brandishing up-cocked tails and ring-necked ducks with their pied-colored bills. Among New Jersey’s considerable boasts are the number of brant that winter on our coast. A trip to Nummy Island and Herford inlet will almost assure you views

Hair In Seconds Human Hair Extensions

of these short necked, marine geese. Feeding primarily upon sea lettuce or eel grass, the birds will also graze on the clipped grass along road sides, a trick they learned back in the winter of 1976 when bitter cold froze many coastal bays and inlets. So cold and relentless was the blast of Arctic air that the water mains in Cape May Point froze and brant starved by the thousands. Now recovered, their quavering, harmonic call is, once again, as much a part of our winter audio-landscape as the keening cry of herring gull. Add the slapping sound of waves and the metallic “plink” of sanderling and you have a winter symphony. But until winter closes its grip over the land, head on over to Bunker Pond and feast your eyes on the kaleidoscope of color that is the waterfowl array Ma Nature has assembled for your viewing pleasure. Ducks make good subjects for study as you dip your senses into the world of birds — and don’t forget, the optics wizards at Cape May bird Observatory have a binocular to fit every budget and Christmas stocking.

Nero is comfortable in a car and friendly toward people. He lived in an adult household until his owner could no longer care for him. Adopt today!

NORMAN was brought into the shelter as a stray and has quickly made his presence known through his happy personality. He loves running in the yard and chasing toys, although he hasn’t quite gotten the idea of returning them! Norman needs a family that will give him some “tender loving care” and continue his training. Adopt today!

“ The entire time you were always professional, kowledgeable, and helpful. You were consistently upbeat and when things did not work out you would say, ”don’t give up, the right one is out there and you will find it.” You were correct and eventually we found that right one for us. We appreciate the fact that you always promptly responded to texts, emails, and phone calls and answered all of the questions we had no matter what they were.“
