Can’t Steal Christmas Here

Chase Jackson Turns 70 At The Ferry Terminal P41-45

Ho, Ho, Ho! It’s A Christmas Bazaar P50

He showed up with termites in his smile and all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile! But even the Grinch was no match for all the joy of the Emlen Physick Estate’s annual tree-lighting ceremony, held last Saturday. The property was open for free, self-guided tours, and visitors brought non-perishable food items for the Cape May Community Food Bank before boarding trolley rides with Saint Nick. In fact, there was so much Christmas cheer to go ’round that by the end of the night, even the Grinch’s heart had grown three sizes. More photos inside! Top: The Godshall-Schoolman-Dale family gets Grinched. Left: The newly lit tree, in all its glory.

What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

«Email us at photo@exitzero.us (write Photo Order in subject line) and tell us the date the photo appeared and on which page. If you don’t have email, call us on 609-770-8479.

«Email info@exitzero.us and write PHOTO REQUEST in the subject line. Or call 609-770-8479. There is no charge, but we can’t ALWAYS guarantee we will show up. Aleksey is a busy guy!

«We love pictures of our magazine on vacation. Email your photos and details to info@exitzero.us and write EZ ON VACATION in the subject line. Do NOT send hard copies. They don’t print well.

The ring finger became the ring finger because it was once believed that a vein in that digit led directly to the heart. The tradition of exchanging rings dates back to ancient Egypt. Now you know.

«Although we no longer offer subscriptions to the weekly issue, you can still subscribe to the FOUR color issues next year. Call 609-770-8479 for more information.

This summer, Cape May fisherman Chris Fischer competed for the second time on the Discovery Channel’s show Naked and Afraid, in which participants try to survive in the wild, well, naked and afraid. Chris lasted his entire 21 days in Colombia.

KYW Radio has put together a guide to “a Cape May birder’s autumn.” Among their must-visit spots for birding (or merely enjoying a pretty day)? Cape May Point State Park, Sunset Beach, and Beach Plum Farm. And for food? Oyster Bay.

Queen May jewelry store — the striking, black building on Washington Street Mall — is owned by wife-and-husband team Amanda Adams and Daniel Uffleman. Both in their early 30s, these young entrepreneurs are first-generation jewelers who specialize in large, estate diamonds. Fun fact: A chest in their shop window once belonged to Jennie Hecht, daughter of Marilyn Monroe’s autobiographer Ben Hecht. Inside are telegrams from Hollywood starlets.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 22. People from all over the country come to Cape May to have Thanksgiving dinner at one of our fine establishments. What kind of rock music do they like?

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Michael Carney from Carney’s is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to serve? A mojito. Just kidding. I hate making them so please don’t order that! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When people throw coasters at me to get my attention. [Editor’s note: Please stop doing this.] Biggest tip? $500 from a wedding party.

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Boughs of Barley - ABV: 11% This Imperial Stout spent a year aging in second-use Cognac barrels. Expect a warming, roasty character and oakiness to dominate, with wisps of chocolate and sweet Cognac-laced vanilla notes coming through, especially on the finish.

Sunset Liquors Sexual Chocolate - $28.99 You’ll recognize this red by it’s handwritten label. A blend of Syrah and Zinfandel from Santa Barbara, California, Sexual Chocolate has a rich, warm feel and a smooth finish. Plus: a really great name. Can’t go wrong!

Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that crappie are in season. Grab your poles... they become most active in the late fall — aka, now. This small, freshwater sunfish species is best enjoyed pan fried at high temps (low heat can lead to a mushy texture). Don’t be afraid to think out of the box — crappie is great in a chowder.

Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.

t was a pretty quiet week here at Undertow Central, so you should mentally prepare yourselves to absorb many Terry O’Brien Nuggets of Wisdom. Terry O’Brien Nuggets of Wisdom are the best kind because of the chewy center. I come to you again this week from the Exit Zero Filling Station, having narrowly survived the moving of three massive and heavy freezers from the second floor down to the kitchen. I, personally, assisted with two of them, the third they got without me (and for which Jack Wright could not even wait until the damn thing was down the stairs before breaking my balls about). And, being reasonably certain I’m not going to have a heart attack, I bring you this week’s Undertow. (It’s possible I’m having one of those three-day-long heart attacks, so if I’m not here next week, you’ll know where to find me.) Anyway, I was remiss last week in not talking about the 274th (I think?) Annual Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Now, jazz isn’t really my cup of tea; like the blues, about 15 min-

utes a year fills my quota (all apologies to Jay Bethel, Herb Moore, Terry Dougherty and Rachel Husta). But it very obviously is the tea of choice for the thousands of musicians and attendees who fill our lovely little town with music and cash. (I heard the bartenders at Carney’s pulled down more on Saturday than I make in a year.) And many of those musicians and attendees visited us here at the EZFS, for which we are very grateful. Congratulations to Michael Kline and his crew for yet again pulling off the impossible. I’d love to see some of these creative

Open Friday and on Saturday, when Bluebone finish off our first year!

See you in the Spring of ’19!

and logistic forces get behind a Cape May Theater & Arts Festival in the near future encompassing not just theater, but comedy and other performing arts. With so many great legacy theaters in town (Cape May Stage, East Lynne Theater Company and, fine, Elaine’s), Bill Sterritt’s SPQR company moving to the Marquis De Lafayette and my own burgeoning Undertow Players troupe, the makings may be there to give it a shot. I already have a name, The Cape May Cringe Festival. Could be a pipe dream, but aren’t those the best? Or at least second best? I would like to, not exactly apologize, but back off a bit from my statement regarding Facebook and politics last week. It was, perhaps, a bit fiery for what it supposed to be a silly little gossip and humor column. But the fact remains that no one in the history of the social media era has ever had their mind changed by your anti-this or anti-that meme, and no one since the election of George Bush has changed their mind about anything. The only thing certain is this... nobody knows everything.

104 JACKSON STREET

I hope my wife and children understand the irony of me being the only one brave enough to pull the massive clumps of hair from our bathtub drain. Speaking of which, I was trying to honor the whole No Shave November thing, but I start to look ridiculous after two weeks of not shaving or trimming my dome. So I shave it all off on Thursday before my double at EZFS and immediately start feeling fluish, which worsens throughout the day and causes me to miss work Friday. What I’m saying is basically my hair is my super power. Like Samson. I am three weeks karaoke-free and doing fine. On the 15th, a Saturday, in December, we offer a brunch that you’ll always remember. From 9 until 1 the Grinch will be here, so you can take pictures (or bring him a beer). So if you’d like to Grinch up your Christmas vacation, visit the Exit Zero Filling Station. With klip-klops and whozits and thingamabobs, with zip-zaps and klompers and plibbity-plobs. (Man, writing nonsense rhymes is easy, and none of our food is very greasy.) Bring the girls, bring the boys, bring all of your tots! You can have lunch with waffle fries or Tater Tots! (Okay, rhyming tots with Tots is Pitbull bad, but on such short notice, it’s the best that I had.) Come one, come several, come many, come all! Actually, if you’re bringing more than 10, I’d give us a call. And… You get the idea. It’s Brinch with the Grinch on December 15, 9am-1pm. Christmas’ biggest butthead-turned-hero will be available for photo ops and to slice the roast beast. (And I know I’m no Dr Suess, just show some damn Christmas spirit, wouldja?) Welcome to Philadelphia, Jimmy Butler! I was as big a Process guy as you’d find (The Process = losing as many games as possible to secure high draft picks to acquire top end talent), and I hate losing Covington and Saric, but the end game of the

November 22, 2018 Process was always to make Philly a desirable place to attract free agents (Lebron James, Paul George) or, failing that, have enough talent on the roster to trade for a superstar like Butler. Now, we go after Kevin Durant… I barked my shin on the corner of a little tray in our house in June of 2017. It still hurts. I recently discovered the not horrible Epix adaptation of Get Shorty. Not sure if it’s following the anthology path of the brilliant Fargo (same title as the movie, and there ends the similarity) or if it hues closer to the original Elmore Leonard story, but it’s very well written, if a little slow, and the cast is amazing, with stand out turns from Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano. I may have a bit of Sherlock Holmes Stockholm Syndrome (I’ve written two original Sherlock Holmes shows and am currently working on a Holmes novella), but I don’t think Hollywood could conceive of anything that looks less funny than the Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly Holmes & Watson. John Alvarez (currently directing Scrooge at Elaine’s, who go through directors like the Eagles go through cornerbacks) shared the promotional poster on Facebook about a year ago and my instant reaction was, “No.” I stand by that reaction. A few reminders to close out the week — TNT Acoustic (me and Tim Joyce) will be at the Rusty Nail on Friday and the Brown Room on Sunday, both gigs 7-11. You can hear a lot of great songs and witness me on my Frodo-like quest of getting Tim to come back from break on time. And on the 30th, TNT: Christmas Edition (me, Tim, Rachel Husta, Terry Dougherty) will be playing outside Congress Hall for the tree lighting at 7pm. I’ll also be singing with the wonderful Congress Hall Choir in the ballroom, 6-7 (assuming I can learn all these songs…) ’Til next week, Gobble Gobble.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

t is time to have my winter jammies laundered and pressed. I had this thought the other day, when I was waiting for my faithless manservant, Kitchener, to finish heating my lightweight fall nightclothes. We got into the usual fight, where he demanded I “be a proper American” and call them “PJs” and I kept shouting “Pyjamas!” until we came to blows. Thus we have settled into an uneasy peace and refer to them as “jammies.” But at this time of year the D’Catur Mansion is not the warmest of places, even when the basement boiler is fully crewed by muscular, shirtless young men who shovel coal as if they are firemen in the cab of the famed steam train Mallard, which once came through Cape May. I recall the crowds turning out to watch it: the gents in their stovepipe hats and the ladies in their wide-hooped skirts, and the children in tiny sailor suits. The Mallard was meant to stop in our fair city but, unbeknownst to us, it had slowed down in Wildwood in error, at which point the citizens had swarmed aboard, removing anything

Adored by Visitors...

shiny that was not nailed down, and the crew took no chances after that. So it howled past at speed, creating a mini tornado that carried away hats, skirts and the smaller children. And so the entire staff swap fall jammies for winter jammies. Back in the day, we all wore mink, which at night gave the mansion the air of a huge rodent burrow. But while I adore the decadence of fur jammies (I once had a snow leopard set, with the paws serving as slippers and gloves), they are really not the most

comfortable to wake up in. We experimented with other fibers, but the purple silk affairs produced a rustling that at first was sensuous and soon became infuriating. And the less said about Kitchener’s leather jammies experiment the better. So we fell back on tradition and now we all wear the most luxurious flannel that tiny hands in India can make. I myself favor designs that invoke D’Cator family crests and art. On the whole, this works well, and I am certain that our seamstress cuts and positions the fabric so the decorations are in places that are most apposite. The prancing unicorn that invariable ends up on my right breast pocket is majestic, while the traditional Scotchman bagpipes can make an amusing posterior decoration that can reduce the staff to helpless laughter if timed properly. I was less pleased with the positioning of the D’Catur agricultural produce arrangement of two potatoes and a cucumber — when I unwittingly answered the door to find the mailman staring at me, he howled and fled off at speed.

Loved by Locals! New Gluten-free options!

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoying a Christmas play

heater is just the ticket for the holiday season. Whether 2018 has been Grinch-y and you need to borrow some holiday cheer, or you’re living a Pinterest-perfect life and need a little bitter to temper the sweet, Cape May theaters can help. Live theater is good for the soul, offering a chance to gather with your fellow humans and share an experience. Go as a family and start a tradition, or if you’re really lucky, let a thoughtful aunt or uncle take your kids so you can have a couple of uninterrupted hours to work on your Christmas list. Cape May has almost as many theater choices as Santa has reindeer. Starting November 23, Elaine’s Dinner Theater presents Scrooge: The Musical, a light-hearted version of the Christmas classic. Call 609884-1199 for reservations. Tickets, including dinner, are $49.95 adults, $39.95 for teens, and $29.95 for children ordering from the children’s menu. Appetizers and cocktails are available for an extra charge. The show starts at 7:30 — go early for cocktails at Phin-

ney’s Pub. (Bonus tip — look for Elaine’s outdoor Who-ville parties in December.) Cape May Stage offers An Actor’s Carol, a twist on the Scrooge story, through December 30. Shows are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm, with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3. In this comic reminder that no one is too jaded for holiday magic, a cranky actor who has often played Scrooge is visited by three spirits of his own. Tickets range from $25 to $40. Visit capemaystage.org for information on Dinner-and-a-Show specials, and the December 16 Pay-What-You-

Wish promotion. At East Lynne Theater Company, see O.Henry’s Christmas Tales, performed by Gayle Stahlhuth. O.Henry stories showcase the magic of everyday people without hiding the gritty reality of early 20th century Manhattan. Tickets are $28 for adults, $20 for students and military, and free for children 12 and under. Shows are offered at 8pm on November 23 and 24, December 2, 6,7 and 8. There is also a 2:00pm show on Saturday, December 8. Congress Hall offers snark to cut through the season’s sweetness with The Santaland Diaries: a David Sedaris Play unning Thursday through Sunday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm through December 28. This modern holiday classic offers a behind-the-scenes look at life as an elf in Macy’s Santaland. Behind the candy canes, there are incompetent managers, bad Santas and lots of laughs. The play is intended for an audience of MATURE elves only. Tickets are $25. There are lunch- or dinner-and-a-show specials available. Call 609-884-8422 to reserve.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I was in Carney’s last weekend and ran into my ex. That was awkward enough, because I thought he had moved out of the area, but worse — he was with a good friend of mine. But what really frosts my fingers is that she and I have been out to lunch several times and she never said a word. Of course, she cowered when she saw me. How would you handle this? I am tempted to wash my hands of her, but we work on a lot of projects together and that might not be practical. — Friendship Gone Wrong Dear Gone Wrong Clearly your friend does not like confrontational situations. Here’s the thing, you are feeling betrayed by her silence probably more than the relationship. Reconcile yourself to the fact that she is

Wise answers to perplexing questions

never going to be a close friend and may have justifiably slipped into acquaintance status. Keep it civil but cool and move on. Put all this to the back of your mind and treat yourself to a cheese and charcuterie platter and fine glass of wine at the Ebbitt Room. Think about the future, not the past. Dear Answer Lady I play golf with the same guys every week, year-round, but lately one of the guys plays so slow I’d rather go to the dentist than play a round of golf with him. I sus-

pect he’s smoking some funny cigarettes before we go out. I mean it’s ridiculous. I’m not the kind of guy who brings things like this up. Is there some passive-aggressive way to get the message to him? — Delay of Game Guy Dear Delay That’s a tough one. A couple of things. Put the guy who plays the fastest in the cart with Slow Guy and see if that encourages him. It would be helpful if Fast Guy is also the most outspoken. Secondly, you could give a time limit in your head and then pick up his ball — by mistake of course. That should set him off. And when he says something, tell him it had been so long since you teed off that you forgot what ball was yours. Lastly, depending on the course, you could ask the pro to tell the foursome to speed up play IF there are others waiting. Meanwhile, head on out to Cape May National and hit some golf balls. It will improve your swing and get that tension out. And — you might consider just telling Slow Guy to get it in gear or pick another sport.

The Movie Column

M

A holiday preview by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

aybe you had an early meal and you’ve already been through the full-out recliner nap. Family is still buzzing around picking at that fantastic pie. What’s the next thing you do? Please don’t tell me you actually want to watch one of those sappy TV holiday movies. Let me save you the trouble — she gets the guy in the end. C’mon, get everyone to go out to the movies! And by movies, yeah I guess I could mean the new Grinch animated movie. It’s getting so-so reviews. Disney’s Nutcracker flick is getting trashed even worse. So here’s what I’m looking forward to seeing. Green Book tells the story of a black classical pianist (Mahershala Ali) being chauffeured by Viggo Mortensen through a concert tour in the south during the 1960s. They need to follow the green book that tells them where all the safe places are. Creed II... Yeah, yeah, you can call it “another Rocky movie” but I liked the first Creed. It’s a Philly thing, c’mon. Hey, at least the old man (Stallone) isn’t fighting in this

Creed II... maybe it’s a Philly thing one. Right there that shows a maturity in Sylvester we’ve been waiting years to see! Bohemian Rhapsody...Has anyone seen it? Besides my sister who is a zealous Queen and Freddy Mercury fan. I’m hearing mixed reviews (but the zealots love it). The movie tells the story of the legendary rock band. Widows is the latest from Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), and it’s getting a lot of buzz. It got rave reviews at Toronto Film Fest, where it premiered. A group of

women get together to plan a heist after their husbands (who the wives didn’t know were criminals) are all killed. One film I’m going to pass on is Venom. I mean, Terry O’Brien already said all that needs to be said when he eloquently wrote, “It’s not that bad.” High praise indeed. And look at Mr O’Brien getting all sappy about Stan Lee. He and I seem to agree on this one. In a world where comic books were set in fictitious towns (Gotham, Metropolis) and heroes had sort of “ordinary” superpowers (Batman, Superman), Stan Lee lit the place up with far-out crazy heroes. And he put those wackos in New York or LA. Add to that the fact that one of his lead characters, Spider-Man, was a teenager just like us kids reading the books, and you could say he revolutionized the industry. It wasn’t until the 1990s that Hollywood’s special effects experts could catch up and do justice to these high-end stories and visuals. Thank you, Stan Lee. You will always be remembered as a true master!

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ne might assume that the hawk watch at Cape May Point State Park is all about hawks. And I’m not going to lie to you. Migrating birds of prey take center stage, but other species are not disdained and sometimes birds of other groups steal the show. Such was the case Saturday when three tundra swans descended, made several passes, then landed on Bunker Pond. Mute swans showing orange bills are European transplants. Tundra swans are native — breeding as the name suggests in the Arctic from Baffin Island to the Aleutians. Smaller than mute swans and distinguished by their black bills, the bird is a favorite of mine. Occasionally, they winter on Lake Lilly but in recent years, our vigilante troop of mutes has taken to driving the natives away. What I love most about these noble birds is their call. Difficult to describe, it sounds to my ear like a cross between a whoop and a sigh. When migrating, often at heights above the range of unaided sight, the birds are frequently heard before they are seen. Flying

in large V-shaped configurations, a wedge of swans etched upon a sapphire blue sky is the epitome of autumn and close to autumn’s swan song, too. When these hardy birds fly, winter is not far behind. But the appearance of the trio of swans called to mind the importance of Cape May. Many of the birds migrating through now breed in the boreal forests of Canada or the Arctic Tundra. Cape May is the place they will spend the northern winter. Here they find the food and shelter to reach next year’s breeding

season in shape to retrace their route, establish territories and rear next year’s young. If not for the richness of our region, the strategy of these wintering birds would fail. If you want to measure the distance between the Arctic and Cape May, you can do it in miles, leagues and degrees of latitude, but the most poignant measurement is wing beats. How many? That depends upon the size of the species and the strength of the tail wind, but one thing is certain — if that whitecrowned sparrow, brant or snowy owl does not find the habitat they require, their life line ends here. We who live here relish our diverse natural dowery. It excites our senses, it bolsters our economy and it obligates us to ensure that we do our part to keep the great hemispheric transit system functioning. The environment is not a competing interest. It is the playing field upon which all human interests compete. Rule number one in any land use decision is: Protect the playing field. The swans are likely still there. Head over and celebrate the return of the natives

JACK is a sweet and, importantly, housetrained Chesapeake Bay retriever and lab mix. He’s also been diagnosed with OCD (really!) meaning he’s very engaged with his toys. How cute/quirky is that? Just like some people, Jack would prefer a home without kids. He would also prefer an exclusive relationship — ie, he wants to be your only dog.

AURORA is a young doberman pinscher mix who loves human interaction. (And given the state of humanity right now, that’s impressive, no?) She’s learning great leash skills, and she loves to be rewarded for good behavior. She came in as a stray but, hopefully, she’ll be leaving as a very loved family member. She deserves it.

MOLLY and BRIAN are a bonded pair of adult beagles that should be adopted together — this affectionate duo has been together since birth, and you don’t want to break up the band. After playtime, they curl up together on their blanket to relax. They’re both great with other pets and, well, just look at those faces! All together now: Awwww.

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

COORS is an affectionate old girl looking for a family. Any family. One with kids, other pets, aliens in the basement... whatever. This mellow girl is guaranteed to fit right in. So... what are you waiting for? Stop by the shelter and meet this sweetie pie today. She is eagerly waiting for someone to whisker away. (See what we did there?)

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

PHILLY is a female cat who will provide you with tons and tons of brotherly, er, feline love. She may be a senior, but you know what? So was Jamie Moyer when he pitched for the Phillies — at least by baseball standards — and he set the record for the oldest MLB player to record a run batted in. In other words: Age is just a number, baby.
