The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

First song played by a human in outer space? Walter Schirra Jr and
Thomas Stafford snuck some bells and a harmonica onto Gemini 6 in 1965 and played Jingle Bells. It was part of a prank they played on ground control, adding that they’d spotted “a command module and eight smaller modules in front” (aka Santa) entering earth’s orbit.

Sixty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr gave a speech entitled “nonviolence and racial justice” at a Quaker conference held in Cape May’s Convention Hall. Just six years later, he’d go on to become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Sprickets — aka, spider crickets — look just as you’d expect. They love dark, moist conditions this time of year, particularly your basement. They are harmless, but might jump on you. They don’t see well and jump in order to scare off potential threats.
Cape Island Home and Gardens in West Cape May’s property boasts 10,123 plants for sale, according to a tongue-in-cheek sign on Broadway, including shrubs, flowers and, this time of year, a plethora of Christmas trees. (It’s where the EZ crew purchase our Douglas fir every year.) Owners Judi Bernard and Cindi Franklin offer a full-service operation, including landscaping services, and they specialize in native species that attract the birds and the bees (and butterflies). Check ‘em out for all your holiday greens.

Ramblings From The Editor
Y
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ou’ve heard of Christmas in July, but this coming weekend will be like July in December... if you catch my drift. It will be at least 30 degrees cooler than midsummer, but the crowds will rival the busiest time of year in America’s Original Seaside Resort. On Friday, there is the tree-lighting ceremony at Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland, followed on Saturday by the 53rd West Cape May Christmas Parade on Saturday. Also on Friday, you’ve got the city’s tree-lighting, then there are Christmas Candlelight House Tours, run by MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. They kick off on Saturday from 5:30-8:30pm and also happen on December 8 and 15. If you haven’t been to Congress Hall’s Brown Room on the night of the tree-lighting, you’ll probably not believe how crazy it is, especially when the crowd moves out for the moment that 35-foot tree gets illuminated. Winter Wonderland, with its cute little train that circles the hotel grounds, clas-
late and cider, while Cape May Honey Farm are offering hot chocolate and tea. And we at Exit Zero Filling Station are offering free samplers of our famous Thai soup. Let’s just hope the rain stays off. Cape May lost an icon with the death on November 20 of Danny Cohen at the age of 63 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Even if you didn’t know this pillar of the business community, you know his product very well. Danny was the owner of Atlantic Capes Fisheries, which comprised a fleet of fishing vessels out of Cape May, Point Pleasant and Ocean City, Maryland, and supplied premium scallops, oysters, lobster, crab and more. But Danny was more than a successful businessman — he was a powerful and extraordinary advocate for sustainable fishing and the environment. He founded Fishermen’s Energy of New Jersey, which planned to build the first offshore wind farm in the United States before running into political roadblocks. This town and this world will be a poorer place without him.
³ sic carousel, tented shopping village and the opportunity for the kids to meet both Mr AND Mrs Claus, while receiving candy canes from the Congress Hall elves whose job it is to keep this festival running, is a must-do for anyone who has a festive bone in their body. And, of course, the Christmas parade is that classic Cape May event. Adding to the festivities this year are some free treats by West Cape May businesses — our neighbors Sunset Liquors are offering free hot choco-

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, JP Linnington from Delaney’s is up. How long have you been bartending? Four years. Favorite drink to serve? A Bulleit Rye Manhattan up. It’s an oldtime classic cocktail that I’ve been told I make very well. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When out-of-towners ask about the off-season and when things start to slow down. It’s more having to repeat the same story, because every customer asks! Biggest tip? $75 on a $100 bill.
BEER OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Baddest Cat in the Whole Damn Town - ABV: 10% An imperial maple brown ale that is malty, rich and smooth as silk. CMBC conditioned this beer on top of gobs of Vermont’s finest Grade A pure maple syrup, yielding a beer Leroy Brown would be proud of.
WINE OF THE WEEK
Collier’s Liquor Store Breca Old Vine Garnacha $16.99 Deep blackberry and raspberry flavors are layered throughout this medium to full bodied red. An excellent value well worth its 90+ rating. Pairs well with beef, lamb, deer, pasta and poultry.
Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that striper are in season. Did you know that older, large female stripers are called “cows” (how rude!) while younger, smaller stripers are called schoolies or shorts? They also don’t have eyelids, which may explain their preference for dawn and dusk feeding.
ENTER THE CLIPART CONTEST We concealed a typewriter in an ad. Enter in one of two ways: 1. t’s the most Undertow time of the year! Hope you all had as… interesting a Thanksgiving weekend as I had. Thursday started with a rise-and-shine trip up to Exit 145 and West Orange, New Jersey, where my brother Mike is finally rich enough to own a whole house AND a Greyhound named Fenn. I mean, really; a Greyhound? That it the most rich people of dogs. (Hot tip: Invest heavily in Netflix stock. That’s what Mike did and now he’s a rich bastard.) The weeks leading up to this gathering of O’Briens were spent negotiating terms on Facebook, what was acceptable table conversation and what was not. A firm NO POLITICS rule was enacted, which was really just a TERRY SHUT UP rule because I’m the only Republican in a family of Commie pinko liberal crybabies. Get a haircut, hippies! Anyway, dinner was prepared and cooked by my wonderful niece Becca, which may not be interesting to you, but you’re not the one with a page-and-a-half to fill, so stuff it! Classic turkey and fixings, a case of Cape May Brewing Company IPA (for said Com-
mie pinkos with their hipster man-buns) and lots of pie made for a pretty great day. I did pretty well, snacking on a beautiful meat and cheese plate (there’s a fancy name for that I can’t recall at the moment… crudite? Tapas? Nom-noms?) and limiting myself to one plate for dinner. That plate was a hubcap, but still… one plate. I did so, so good. Until the drive home, a pit stop at the AC rest area, and a bag of Burger King. But… one plate. It was the first family gathering I can recall that a guitar didn’t make an appearance. Like, seriously, ever. (We O’Briens don’t
like to talk, so we express ourselves through singing.) Fortunately, Mike has a baby grand piano in his living room (rich guys, amirite?) and he spent all week practicing “New York State of Mind.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him that the thought of singing that song give me full body heaves (I may have sung it more than Billy Joel, at this point), so we played it not once, but twice! Yippee! But seriously, it was an awesome get-together and inspired my kids to want to get closer with their Irish cousins. They’re already in tight with the Italian half, now they’d like to see the polar opposite. The Fiorentinos are a loud, boisterous, happy bunch. The O’Briens just kind of wander around, bump into the furniture, then bust out a perfect hour-part harmony on “God Only Knows.” It’s… pretty weird. And congratulations to my brother Mike on his semi-retirement. (FYI, The Cure’s “Pictures of You” is playing on YouTube while I’m writing this. It is one of the greatest songs ever created. You should listen to it now. If not, you’re a bad

person and should feel bad.) That 300-mile Thursday round trip was followed by, you guessed it, Friday. And on Friday I had a TNT Acoustic gig at the Rusty Nail with my wing man, Tim Joyce (he’s single now, ladies, so make your play…). It was, how shall I put this delicately, not heavily attended. But the people who were there seemed to like us. I don’t know — I think we’re pretty okay. Two of the biggest gluttons for punishment, aka our most stalwart fans, were there: Kathleen Scullion and Dean Bloemer. Not only are they good friends and good tippers, they distinctly request “any song that’s not Brown-Eyed Girl”, which is my favorite song. Much like my two favorite football teams are the Eagles and Whoever’s Playing Dallas. But that’s neither here nor there. We ended a little early, which gave me a little free time to drop into the Ugly Mug for long enough to realize I may have aged out of the Ugly Mug, then a pop-in to Fins, from which there is no doubt I’ve aged out of. Won’t someone please think of the middle-aged white guys? Two great bars, though. (Ooh, now “Fall on Me” by R.E.M. is playing, which is one of the few songs better than “Pictures of You.” Sidebar: If I start an R.E.M. tribute band will you come see it? Leave your answer in the comments below.) Saturday was one of those bitter and sweet days. Bitter because I made the 100-mile drive to Kennett Square to say a final goodbye to my brother Greg, who passed away this summer; sweet because later that night was my 30th high school reunion, also in Kennett. It was, obviously, very sad. Greg was a great guy who touched a lot of lives, but finally succumbed to his demons. If only he knew how much he was loved. But it was also an opportunity to see some folks I haven’t seen in a very long time. Some not even since that Thursday two days prior. Like any good farewell, there were tears and
November 29, 2018 laughter. And like any good O’Brien farewell, there was a lot of music. His ashes now lie in his most sacred of cathedrals — a baseball field. I miss you, Greg. You were a good brother. (It just got really dusty in here… pardon me a moment...) I cooled my heels for a couple hours at my friend Barry Davidson’s house (he’s another rich bastard, with a big rich bastard house and a lovely rich bastard wife, Cecilia) sipping Macallan and reminiscing about old friends. Unfortunately we then had to go hang out with them. You know, I like the idea of class reunions. Actually going to one is like speed dating; three minutes talking to each person, exchanging basic details, maybe a kiss or a hug, then it’s over. The people who were nice to me then were nice to me now. And vice-versa. So, it was nice seeing everyone, I guess? Though $60 seemed a little steep for an open bar, a few trays of hors d’oeuvres and desserts from a box. But I’m a bit of a tightwad. The most delicious part? My old high school bully was our bartender. The dick. (I still tipped him well, I’m not an animal. Sunday brought me back to Cape May and a TNT gig at The Brown Room, which is swiftly becoming my favorite place to play. Great vibe, discerning crowd and awesome staff. We’re back there December 9, 16 and 30. Love to see you there. That about does it. Be sure to come to Congress Hall on Friday (tomorrow!) night for the tree-lighting ceremony. The wonderful Congress Hall Choir performs in the ballroom 6-7. TNT: Christmas Edition (me, Tim, Terry Dougherty on the upright bass, Rachel Husta on the upright microphone) plays by the tree from 7-8, they they light that mother up. It’s going to be fantastic. And cold. Somebody bring me a hot chocolate. Now, if you’ll pardon me, John McCain is counting votes in Florida. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
adore Rainy Season. Of course most of America does not call it that, which is a shame: only Cape May has a legal and official Rainy Season. I think this was in part the doing of grandmama D’Catur, from Scotchland: that drab wee nation has 184 different names for rain, did you know? I also became accustomed to a proper Rainy Season when in India, when I was an Officer of Steam Cavalry during the Raj. Of course, there were some things from those days that I am not proud of. Actually, a great many. In fact everything we did was inexcusable. Except for Tiffin. But the rainy season was so wet that I had to decamp to my elephant, Emily. I had a roomy tent up there, and all the home comforts, most crucially a bag of buns for Emily, in return for which she carried me through the floodwaters and deterred unwelcome visitors, stamping on them with her India Rubber boots that I had specially made. Well, Emily came home with me and was the real-life inspiration for the Wooden Elephant. We used to be quite something, Emily and I, as we took our morning walk
along the boardwalk, trumpeting to ladies and gents and stepping on Shoebies. Poor Emily. I miss her, though she lives on, in the form of a large umbrella holder in the hall, a fly switch, and a set of chess pieces. Anyway, Cape May’s Rainy Season is a damp affair, squeezed in between the heat of summer and the Arctic blast of winter. So I do make the best of it, in my oilskins and sou’wester. I do fear, though, that those poltroons whose grasp of climate change is restricted to the view outside of their kitchen
window, have missed the point, which is that those small parts of our fine city that are not underwater in 50 years (or part of our secret Floating City project — I best say no more here, other than that seats on this contemporary ark will start at $100 for steerage and go all the way up to a million for a penthouse with a balcony from which to watch the world drown) will enjoy endless warm wet rain, which, when it pauses, will see invasions of zombies. Actually, I may have gotten that last from the televisual documentary The Walking Dead, but I in many ways that’s not unlike peak summer season, except that zombies eat brains rather than saltwater taffy. That (fools, rather than zombies) is why Ma D’Catur used to say, “Give every idiot his or her say, but when you have counted to ten, deliver a sharp blow to their temple, with either two knuckles, or a folded cigarette card.” If this is you, I urge you to step outside, raise your face to the rain and open your mouth and eyes. That thing you can taste? That burns your eyes? It’s acid rain from coal-fired power stations. You maroon.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, how to craft your Christmas list
veryone gets at little crafty at the end of the year. Some of you can craft carefully-worded-and-almost-polite responses to awkward questions from relatives, like, “A PhD? How much does that cost?” or “Will you ever get married, or are you happier living in sin?” or “Are you sure you want to eat two pieces of pie?” Others craft excuses to avoid interacting with those relatives. Some craft a list of gifts to buy for the kids, strategically planning how to win the “cool auntie” arms race; others can entertain a passel of young’uns for hours with paper airplanes and rubber bands. You may be able to build museum-worthy mental maps of short cuts around town, likely parking spaces and dining options; your brother can stretch Thanksgiving leftovers into pot pies, soups and sandwiches so he never has to face the crowds. We all have our strengths and we can all stretch our crafting muscles in Cape May this holiday season. Make your own wreath at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave-
nue, on Thursday, November 29 from 10am to noon. Register by calling 609-427-3045. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members, and you’ll come out with a wreath or garland made of fresh evergreens and other natural material which will make your home look and smell festive. (If you’re crafting a neater yard, you may be able to donate your excess evergreens — call to make arrangements. ) Learn how to improve your gingerbread decorating with the help of an expert. At Congress Hall, you can learn Gingerbread
Decorating with Mrs Claus and, really, who better to teach you? On Saturdays and Sundays through December 23, learn how to turn ordinary, pre-fab cookie houses into culinary works of art. It’s like HGTV for the younger set. Kids will learn how to use the tools of the holiday trade — icing, gum drops and peppermint — to create a fairytale-worthy mini cottage. Reservations are $25 per house — one house per two guests — and though parents can help, Mrs Claus hopes they remember that it’s the process, not the product, that makes the memory. Call 609-884-6542 for reservations and more information. Exercise your appreciation of other crafters at the Crafts at Christmas show at Convention Hall on Saturday, December 1 (9am to 4pm) and Sunday, December 2 (9am to 3pm). Shop with an ocean view and pick up unusual apparel, jewelry, art and accessories for your friends or yourself. Poke through Cape May’s many antique shops for examples of fine old craftmanship, and find fine art in the galleries along the Washington Street Mall.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady The holidays are here and I am feeling a lot of pressure to propose to my girlfriend of three years. The hints are coming from everywhere and were very apparent at Thanksgiving dinner. I want to get married, just not TODAY. Nor do I like being pressured. And the bridal magazines laying around are no help either. I know everyone is expecting me to propose before Christmas and I’m not going to. Is there a diplomatic way of handing this without it ending in a breakup? — Cornered Dear Cornered Although The Answer Lady appreciates the pressure you are under, she wonders if it is not of your own making. Clearly you have not made your position clear, and there is an expectation. The Answer Lady suggests
Wise answers to perplexing questions
you go to one of Cape May’s jewelry stores — Henry’s, Victorious, Patricia Jackson, Queen May, MaryAnn’s — and buy her a necklace or bracelet as a pre-engagement present. Give it to her Christmas Eve and explain to her what your timeframe is. And you must have one — a timeframe. It isn’t fair to your girlfriend to expect that she’s going to just keep hanging around while YOU decide on the right time to get hitched. Dear Answer Lady My mother is insisting on hosting
Christmas dinner — as she did when dad was alive. She remarried and her new husband likes to drink — with each drink becomes more intemperate with his comments and language. My brother and I have little children and they are not used to that kind of behavior and I don’t want to expose them to it. On the other hand, I don’t want to create a rift. My brother agrees, but is afraid to say anything. — Protective Dad Dear Dad Awkward! The first thing The Answer Lady suggests is that you talk to your stepfather and explain the situation. Tell him the kids are a wee bit afraid of him. So, if he would watch the potty mouth, you and your brother would be grateful. If he tells you to bugger off, implement Plan B. Host the dinner yourselves — you and your brother. Gaiss’ will be a great choice for your turkey dinner. Tell your mother the kids are too young and would prefer being at home or at their uncle’s. That way you can control the liquor flow and, hopefully, minimize the fallout.

B
Gus Mosso reviews East Lynne Theater’s “O. Henry’s Christmas Tales”
e prepared to thoroughly enjoy an outstanding performance of O. Henry’s Christmas Tales adapted and performed by Gayle Stahlhuth, artistic director of East Lynne Theater Company. Take a trip back in time when the celebration of the Christmas holiday was pure and innocent. Stahlhuth researched O. Henry’s works especially as they relate to this joyous season and the audience is fortunate to witness the results of this study as they partake in this performance. “One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That’s all I have,” sighed Della in “The Gift of the Magi”, just one of the O. Henry stories adapted and performed by Stahlhuth. The selections this year all take place in Manhattan, and all have to do with an exact amount of money. Della needs to buy a Christmas present for her husband, and only has $1.87. A kindly old gent spends $1.30 on dinner for someone he barely knows in “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen”. A millionaire offers $100 to anyone who will return his five-year-old daugh-
ter’s rag doll in “Compliments of the Season”. Bobby Gillian inherits $1,000 in “One Thousand Dollars”, and wonders how to spend it. With the exception of “The Gift of the Magi”, these stories have never been performed before by Stahlhuth. “There are just as many real Christmas stories as ever, if we would only dig ’em up,” wrote O. Henry in his “Unfinished Christmas Story”, published posthumously in 1919. Stahlhuth has been digging up and adapting American Christmas stories for Cape May audiences since 2005, performing works by Zona Gale, L. Frank Baum, Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Edward Everett Hale, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. For
over 35 years, she’s been performing one-person shows, beginning with her own “Lou: The Remarkable Miss Alcott”. Imagine one superb actor, Stahlhuth, convincingly portraying thirty-plus O. Henry characters, each one with his/her own persona. Although some of his stories may have been unfamiliar to today’s audience, our minds were now open to meeting new people. “The Gift of the Magi” is the most popular and well known of O. Henry’s repertoire. To witness Gayle’s character portrayals of the simple and heartwarming experiences of two married lovers is an unforgettable moment. The audience was mesmerized by Gayle’s perfect diction, facial expressions and subtle body movements. The characters became alive on the ELTC stage! In this world of too much materialism ,what better way to reflect on simpler times? The show is playing at First Presbyterian Church of Cale May, 500 Hughes Street on December2, 6, 7, and 8 at 8:00 pm. On Saturday, there is also a matinee at 2:00pm. Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hanksgiving gave me cause to ponder the universal appeal of birds, an epiphany prompted perhaps by the group’s widespread gastronomic appeal. No other animal group figures more prominently in our religions, legends and lore. But this is merely a manifestation of their appeal, I’m searching for the source. Yes, their vivid colors and song ignite our senses. But in order to hear and see birds, they must be nearby. And birds are, occupying every corner of the planet we do, and some we do not. Our close association goes back to a time before our ancestors descended from the trees and we shared the limbs of trees with these vibrant neighbors. The earliest reference to “bird watchers” involves a letter from the king of Babylon to the Pharaoh Egypt to request the intercession and interpretation of one of his “bird watchers” to offer council on one of the king’s empire shifting enterprise or another. Today, birds continue to portend the future. Birds feeding frantically at your feeder suggest impending cold or an approaching
storm. If you are a deer hunter, you may have noted that birds become vocal when deer move through their feeding area. And birds are, of course, heralds of dawn. But none of this answers my question: “What is the source of our fascination?” I think the answer is their simple presence. Other animal species flee from us. But birds, owing to their danger-nullifying powers of flight, allow close approach. And we reward their trust with affection. But more than this, landscapes without
birds are largely static. Go to the Grand Canyon today and go back tomorrow and you’ll note a certain sameness — but birds reshuffle the deck. Their presence or absence imparts an existential novelty, With birds present, no two scenes are exactly alike. It’s why we rise every morning, isn’t it? To appreciate what new and exciting enticements the universe has rolled out for us. So here we are, 200,000 years into our human evolution, continuing to engage birds with the appreciation and fascination we did when we were branch mates. I have no idea what the birds make of all this, being unable at a glance to distinguish between hunters who want to eat them or writers who wish to appreciate them. So with regards to humans, birds have developed a blanket policy. Get too close, they increase the distance. Some walk or hop to safety, some swim, most fly. And it might be that it is their enviable power of flight that is precisely that source of our fascination we find with them. Enjoy. Today, Ma Nature rolls out a new show with a new cast of winged characters.

CENA is an adorable, sweet, loving, 6 year old, neutered male patiently waiting at the shelter for his forever person. He is playful, smart and dreams of a chance at a life outside of the shelter. He would do best as an only animal and no children. Stop by the shelter and adopt Cena today! He’s eagerly awaiting your arrival.
NERO is a six year old, house trained, well mannered rottweiler that has been in the shelter since July 28, 2018. His size alone is impressive! Weighing in at 150 pounds this guy is one BIG dog! Nero is comfortable in a car and friendly toward people. He lived in an adult household until his owner could no longer care for him. Adopt today!
MOLLY and BRIAN are a bonded pair of adult beagles that should be adopted together — this affectionate duo has been together since birth, and you don’t want to break up the band. After playtime, they curl up together on their blanket to relax. They’re both great with other pets and, well, just look at those faces! All together now: Awwww.

MARIGOLD was found roaming around near the Big Lots in Court House. Apparently she was out looking for some great deals! Speaking of deals, Marigold qualifies for the senior for seniors deal. That means she is free if another senior adopts her! Now that’s a deal you can’t pass up! Please visit Marigold at the Rio Grande PetSmart today.
BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?
DUSTY was born in beautiful Victorian Cape May. He was a happy kitten. He was loved, played, hunted like any other kitten. Other cats came and went but Dusty was special. His owner knew he could never part with him. Unfortunately, Dusty’s owner passed leaving him alone, sad and scared. Won’t you be the one to make him happy again? Adopt!

Stateof-the-art kitchen includes a highspeed Bosch cooktop. Living room, dining room, first master bedroom and kitchen are all 28 x 16 and run the length of the house. If you want to experience summer life as it was for the lucky few in Victorian Cape May, this is the place! $2,800,000
