The Parade Must Go On! Despite a dreary forecast, the West Cape May Community Christmas Parade took place Saturday in dry conditions — call it a Christmas miracle. The parade, which drew 10,000 people, featured a mix of professional and student acts from around the region, as well as floats from local businesses. “It’s a wonderful cross-section,” said West Cape May Mayor Carol Sabo, who says planning for next year is already underway. The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

Local Landmark

The late Joe Frazier, aka “Smokin’ Joe,” was a gold-medal winning Olympic boxer and a heavyweight champion from 1970 to 1973. He made cameo appearances on two Simpsons episodes and played himself in Rocky. He had several homes in Cape May.

Due to conservation efforts, New Jersey went from one nesting pair of bald eagles in the 1970s to more than 200. Now, they’re often spotted at the South Cape May Meadows and Higbee Beach. Adults have a wingspan of nearly seven feet.

Did you know there’s a World War II-era lookout tower located *inside* the Grand Hotel on Beach and Philadelphia avenues? You can see it peeking above the roofline. The military structure was used in conjunction with other towers — like the restored Fire Control Tower No. 23 in Cape May Point — to pinpoint the locations of German U-boats. It was part of an elaborate Harbor Defense system that protected the Delaware Bay, known as Fort Miles. Towers in North Wildwood and the Crest were torn down.

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

haven’t been shouting from the rooftops about THE event of the winter, the Exit Zero Burns Supper. Time to begin! It’s at Cape May Convention Hall on Saturday, January 26. Once again, there will be a three-course meal — scotch egg or scotch broth; haggis (meat or veggie) or shepherd’s pie; plus dessert. But this year we will have THREE bands for your enjoyment! The Nae Breeks pipe band will return, along with Pittsburgh’s Bastard Bearded Irishmen plus, new this year, the John Byrne Band. For $45, you get a three-course meal and close to five hours of entertainment! Bargain of the year. Tickets are on sale on our website, ezstore.us. Also new this year is a sponsorship deal with, appropriately enough, Robert Burns whisky. I visited their distillery in the beautiful island of Arran in my native Scotland two years ago and had a fine time. Because of this sponsorship deal, we’ve already been able to make a donation of $5,000 total to two charities helping victims of the California wildfire — United Way of Northern California and North Valley Animal Disaster Group. Huge

props to Candace Carpio, restaurant manager at the Washington Inn, who came up with the idea that Cape May should help the victims (both humans AND animals) of this appalling disaster. There’s more fundraising to come from Cape May since the folks at Washington Inn and Cape May Winery are planning a big benefit soon (watch this space). There’s more than just the Saturday night supper this year. On the Friday (January 25, which is actually Robert Burns’ birthday — he’s the legendary Scots poet in whose honor

this whole shindig is held), we are hosting an exclusive, gourmet Scots dinner at Exit Zero Filling Station. The aforementioned John Byrne (a Philly-based Dubliner) will be playing solo by our roaring fireplace that night, as we serve you delights such as authentic Scots fish-n-chips, gratin of smoked haddock and crab, red curry salmon chowder, a haggis burger and more. The event begins at 7pm and is limited to 60 guests, so you NEED to make reservations by calling us on 609-770-8479. There’s no fixed price — menu is à la carte. The wife and I stopped by a couple of Broadway parties on Saturday, enjoying another West Cape May Christmas Parade. Despite a rainy forecast, all was good. “There was a lot of speculation about the right thing to do in terms of canceling or not,” said West Cape May mayor Carol Sabo. “But, ultimately, we made the right decision.” Huge shout-out to CMPD, particularly Lieutenant Dekon Fashaw, who coordinated state police, county sheriff’s office and local police. “It may seem like overkill to some,” Carol said, “but safety is always a top priority.”

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Leslie DeRose from Fins is up. How long have you been bartending? 10 years. Favorite drink to serve? A chocolate martini because they are delicious and I like the presentation with the chocolate drizzle. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers order drinks one at a time instead of giving me their whole order at once! Biggest tip? I’m not going to say a number, but people are usually very generous around Christmas.

BEER OF THE WEEK

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Apple Bomb - ABV: 8.00% It’s an explosion of apple flavor in a well-balanced wheat beer, adding the apple-y goodness at the tail end of fermentation to retain a soft and gentle apple aroma. Its bready and biscuity malts are balanced by the sharpness of the apples.

Sunset Liquors 2016 Blaufrankisch Vom Kalk $16.99 This Austrian red is dark, juicy with plump cherries on the nose that carry right through to the palate where they are met with a bright freshness that holds all of this pretty pure fruit in check. Pair with pork.

Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that tautog aka blackfish are in season. Did you know that tautog have teeth that are like human teeth but very crooked and razor sharp. These teeth and their powerful jaws help break through mollascs and crab shells.

I am writing to you this week, once again, from the cozy confines of the Exit Zero Filling Station, your local ocean-friendly restaurant, where the electric candles are lit, the plastic tree is trimmed, the fake fire is roaring and your robot server, T-Bot 3000, waits to take your order. Like me, none of these things will end up in a turtle’s snout come January. A month ago I received a phone call from Cape Resorts entertainment honcho Myra Vassian asking if TNT, my acoustic duo with Tim Joyce, would be interested in playing a set outside before the tree-lighting on the Congress Hall lawn. Sure, I said. What’s the big deal? I said. A few songs on the lawn then they light a tree, I said. What’s the big whoop? I said. Well, turns out the whoop was pretty big. I figured we’d be standing on the grass, playing through a small PA system while maybe a dozen people listened to us as they crossed the lawn from the carousel to the choo-choo train rides (Congress Hall’s fantastic Winter Wonderland is open now

until December 31). I, uh, figured wrong. I arrived to find a six-foot high stage, with red and green spotlights, had been erected for our use and, later, the Congress Hall Choir’s, and that a professional sound team had been brought in. Big whoop, indeed. It was around this time I started to get nervous. Real nervous. As the lawn continued to fill with people, my nerves got even worse. Holy crap, I said. This IS a big deal. Tim arrived shortly after I, followed by Rachel Husta (vocals) then Terry Dougherty (upright bass) and we had a brief sound-

check. From six feet up, the lawn looked even busier. And I was more nervous. Rachel, also nervous, suggested a glass of wine. I was very much in favor of this, so we headed into the Brown Room where my karaoke buddy Frank Colontonio was having a bite. Frank, ever gracious, bought the wine for us (served by the ever-handsome Steve Augustine). This took a bit of the edge off. Also helpful was the second glass I literally snatched from Lorraine Baldwin’s hand, with Pete’s blessing. (Pete is pretty cool, even though he missed the verse I tailored for him; “Have a holly, jolly Christmas, and when you walk down the street, say hello to friends you know if one of them is Pete.” And is it me or do a lot of my stories start and/or end with me drinking?) With the Congress Hall Choir making beautiful music in the ballroom under Myra’s direction, it left us a little time to stew and kibbutz. And the lawn just kept filling up. I started to hear people talking about this being the busiest tree-lighting they can remember, and that was before the

200 or so people watching the choir joined the throng. What I’m trying to say is... the damn place was packed. Around 7 we got the nod. After a brief introduction from… PJ? JP? Dammit… I knew I should have written it down… we played our first song, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and were off and running. And while it wasn’t quite Freddy Mercury at Live Aid holding 150,000 in the palm of his hand, it was still awesome to stand on that stage, look out on that field, and sing for a sea of people. My nervousness was gone, replaced by a certain kind of joy I achieve only through singing. (And, um, being a husband and father.) Most of you know what a weepy sap I’ve become in the 15 years I’ve been writing this column. I mean, a fairly well-made coffee commercial will draw a tear. But it’s a Christmas gig! What could possibly happen that would turn me into a gasping, sobbing idiot? Here’s what... my wife and children appearing as if out of nowhere in front of the stage as we began the Bing Crosby-David Bowie version of “Little Drummer Boy.” Less than a week after spreading my brother Greg’s ashes on a baseball field. “I pray my wish, will come true. For my child, and your child, too.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME DAVID BOWIE!!!??!??!??!!! WHAT THE HELL???!!?!??!?!? Anyway, like any good Irishman, I gritted my teeth, swallowed those emotions and proceeded to have a great time. Yeah, there were some clams here and there (though we did pretty well for a group that had never played together and had only one rehearsal) but the crowd didn’t know or didn’t care or had enough to drink or some combination of all those things because they were hootin’ and hollerin’ and singing along and making an old singer feel pretty good about himself. At the request of Bill Caterini, who was running sound in the ballroom and hanging out

December 6, 2018 with his best girl, Karin Rickard, we closed our set with the Barenaked Ladies-Sarah McLachlan (does it get any more Canadian than that?) version of “We Three Kings” and begrudgingly ceded the stage to the choir. I could have stayed up there all night. I’m starting to run out of space here so I’ll just finish by saying what an incredible time it was. It’s not often I devote an entire column to one topic, but this seemed worth it. I got to sing some songs, listen to more, hold hands with my wife as we inched through the teeming masses. I got to kiss Myra Vassian on the cheek, and kiss Curtis Bashaw on the cheek, like, six times. Had a nice talk with David Von Savage as Claudia and my Cath and Amy Souder bonded over dance tales and spiked hot chocolate. I also found out that a man can leave a stage, fight his way through the thickening crowds in the Brown Room and Blue Pig, make his way to the Boiler Room bathroom using a few well-placed hands on shoulders and sharp elbows, and make it back to that stage in less time than it takes Rachel Husta to sing “Last Christmas” by Wham. But it was close. (Extra special thanks to Rachel and Terry for bringing a touch of class to TNT, when usually it’s just me and Tim in assless chaps and leather dusters.) And just a little inside baseball FYI... I wrote a whole different column this week which EZ chief Jack Wright crumpled into a little ball and threw at my head because it didn’t talk about the tree-lighting, “the biggest Christmas event in town!” according to a certain angry Scot. So I tapped this baby out in its place and now have next week’s column already written! Ah, life. Sometimes it’s not so bad. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to get back to the Christmas parade, which this year was longer than John McCain’s funeral. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

s it Christmas again? Must be, judging from the appearance of hundreds of ingratiating cards from my worthless progeny. It is a D’Catur family tradition to compete for the attention of the current head of the family by being the first to wish him or her well on any occasion. That can be irksome when, ahead of a dental appointment, I receive hundreds of bouquets of flowers, bottles of wine and declarations of loyalty from great-great-grandchildren I cannot recall, and am sure I would dislike should I be able to. Given that another family tradition is to strive always to become the head of the family, by whatever means present themselves, every bouquet needs to be examined for toxic thorns, every wine bottle tested for poison and the ink of the letters presumed to be mixed with arsenic. And then there is the dentist him or herself, who has likely been bribed, and who usually undergoes a brief and memorable loyalty test at the business end of his own drill before being allowed to examine the D’Catur ivories. That right of succession extends not just to blood relatives, but to personal staff and even

pets, so you can imagine the daily tensions in the mansion. I have an extensive library of blackmail material on all of them, including Young Albert, who like most Yorkshire Terriers likes to project an image of decadent amorality, when in fact he likes nothing better than to curl up with a Grisham novel and his clay pipe. Relax – Albert refuses to read my column, which he regards as nothing more than the opium-induced rantings of a deluded blowhard. I take offense only with the “deluded”. Anyways: Christmas. As I watch the

screening of all my family’s cards, and in return plan my own gifts (based on the toxicity of those arriving at the D’Catur Mansion, another tradition is that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I also told that to the eccentric scientist, Newton, who I believe applied it to some of his own scientific tinkering, I am reminded that it is also a tradition that I deliver unto thee all gifts of such magnificence that you will be all at once filled with gratitude and overcome with shame that you will be unable to send me anything comparable. To that end, the elves have been set to work in the basement. At least, I think they are elves: Kitchener assures me they are, but I have a suspicion they are merely small Wildwooders he rounded up. No matter: they have nimble fingers, those Wildwooders, and will be paid handsomely for producing exquisite handpainted wooden soldiers, wind-up mechanical chimpanzees on little tricycles and train sets that puff actual steam. Of course, one in a hundred of those toys is programed to be homicidal... but what better plan for an exciting Christmas Day?

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Christmas trolley tours

hen nights are long and bedtime beckons early, let your imagination loose. We all know that imagination is good for children, but we sometimes dismiss its value for adults. Imagination is a good way to boost brain health. MRI studies show that you exercise different parts of your brain by pretending. You can improve your skill at a task by imagining completing it successfully. Scholars speak of visiting rooms in your mental attic, but one of the best imagination techniques is traveling to a play zone, or, as the dear, departed Mr Rogers called it, a neighborhood of make-believe. Fred Rogers was a puppeteer with a simple storytelling technique. He invited his audience members to hop on a trolley to Make Believe. From its earliest incarnation on Josie Carey’s The Children’s Corner in 1954, the trolley served as a link between the realistic parts of of Mr Roger’s Neighborhood and the fantastic neighborhood ruled by King Friday XIII and Queen Sara Saturday. Mr Rogers understood, before scientists proved it, that

children appreciated being in on the game. After Mr Rogers changed into his sweater, fed the goldfish and visited a factory or learned cello from YoYo Ma, it was time for pretend. American children celebrated the wedding of King Friday and Queen Sara, and the birth of their son, Prince Tuesday, who went to school in Someplace Else. We watched Henrietta Pussycat’s jealous reaction to a new member of the neighborhood family. We appreciated Lady Aberlin’s patience with the grouchy Lady Elaine Fairchilde. We looked to the helpers, like Officer Clemmons, when

things were scary. We learned that imagining things helps to make them real. Take your own trip to Make Believe on one of Cape May’s trolley tours, presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC). On the Ghosts of Christmas Past tour, a costumed actor from East Lynne Theater Company performs a holiday-themed ghost story as you ride through Cape May’s decorated streets. The bubble of light inside the trolley creates an intimate setting for the storytelling and makes the audience feel a part of the tale. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 children (ages 3-12). The Holiday Lights trolley rides offer singalongs and stories about Victorian Christmas traditions — $12 adults; $10 children. Mrs Claus escorts children of all ages on Santa’s Trolley Rides, which features stories and songs. The big guy himself will greet children with a treat at the Carriage House. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. Rides start at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Visit capemaymac.org for more information.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend promised to come to Christmas dinner with my family to meet everyone. Now, as the date nears, he is backing out saying, “I don’t want to be grilled.” He does not live here. He has a child by a previous relationship and he is a musician. He thinks all these things will not play well with my family. My family is not judgmental at all. Is there anything I can say that will change his mind? — Christmas Solo Dear Solo Ahh, The Answer Lady has been getting so many queries like this one. The problem is that the stakes are so high at the holidays to make everything perfect, like a Hallmark movie. Why not take the steam out of this pressure cooker and either have your beau

Wise answers to perplexing questions

meet them after dinner, for dessert, or the day before? No more than an hour or two. Otherwise, let him pick his own time and place. The Answer Lady understands how disappointed you are, but have faith. There will, hopefully, be many more Christmases which the two of you can enjoy together. Meanwhile, it sounds like your honey needs some honey. Stop by the Cape May Honey Farm and pick from one of their many fine products. A jar of homespun honey can take the edge off the stress of Christmas.

Dear Answer Lady My daughter gave me a necklace for my birthday last week. I know it was quite expensive, but I hate it. My husband and I have been arguing about this. I want to take it back and get something I will wear and enjoy. He says I am being selfish and inconsiderate. I don’t see why. Shouldn’t she want me to be happy? And why should she waste her money on something I will never wear? I know you will agree with me. My husband reads your column all the time. — Unhappy in Cape May Point Dear Unhappy The Answer Lady does not agree with you and, in fact, thinks your husband succinctly summed it up. What cost to you would it be to wear the necklace when you and your daughter are out together? Why hurt her feelings when she has taken so much trouble to please you? We understand the point regarding the cost. So, next time suggest a gift card. Accent on Beauty, for example has a great deal on gift cards. And who can’t use an accent on beauty?

The Theater Column

T

Veronica Scutaro reviews Cape May Stage’s “An Actor’s Carol”

he finale of the Cape May Stage 30th Anniversary Season, An Actor’s Carol, rounds out the year with wit and true theatrical joie de vivre. The backdrop of this romp across the boards is A Christmas Carol — but fair warning to all Dickensian purists, this story takes the viewer to a new place, weaving a new story with shades of the old. Directed by Roy Steinberg and written by Cape May playwright Charles Evered, this work brings 21st century reality to a timeless Victorian tale. The Ebenezer of this production, Hugh Pendleton, played by John Little, is a dried up hasbeen actor, a bitter man who drinks too much and, like the original Ebenezer is, frankly, a humbug. Little plays the scenes of Christmas past, present and future with poignancy and heart. His scene of Christmas present, featuring Karack Osborn as Derek, is not to be missed. Osborn’s Derek is sympathetic, vulnerable, sweet and perfectly imperfect. Osborn plays a number of roles in this production with such precision and ani-

mation that, like any chameleon worth his stripes (or dots or paisley), he becomes each character uniquely. He plays a teenage boy protecting a young Hugh Pendleton from bullies, a theatrical agent and a lonely aspiring actor, to name just a few. When he is in any character, the viewer can completely forget that just a minute before he was someone else entirely. He seems to change physically as he assume each new identity. Bravo, Mr Osborn. The theater owner and nephew of Hugh Pendleton is played by Kevin Cristaldi, who is a perfect Fred — optimistic, caring and

loyal. His portrayal of the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come has just the right blend of creepy and comical. Kristin Hopkins’ roles are executed with perfect timing and pitch. As Fred’s wife, her combination of skeptic, cynic and affectionate wife strike just the right note. In her performance as the stage manager Ghost of Christmas Present, she lets everyone know who’s the boss. The four actors of this production play 17 roles seamlessly. The magic of taking a class like a Christmas Carol and making it something completely different is not for the faint of heart. Any actor who can and will bring laugh out loud humor to roles based on such a Victorian standard must be applauded. And this troupe of performers is fearless. Thank you for that. The play runs through December 30 with more information at capemaystage. org. Congratulations to Cape May Stage on 30 years of fine theater. May every future season bring joy and wonder to audiences and actors alike.

Bird Droppings

E

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

very time I stand on the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park, a handicap-friendly platform constructed out of western red cedar, I wonder what the young 24-year-old journeyman hawk watcher would have made of all this: the daily total board at the base of the platform, interpretive signage, interpretive interns and not one but two counters, a primary counter and an alternate, plus scores of eager visitors. Back when I started the count in 1976, the platform consisted of the rickety table I built out of plywood and two-by-fours. Interpretive signage was limited to a handwritten sheet. Visitors? Maybe 20 all fall, including my girlfriend down from North Jersey. It wasn’t until 1977, year two of the count, that I thought to borrow a lifeguard chair so I did not need to stand for 10 hours a day. Substitute counter? Not on your life. This was my count, Day in, day out, seven days a week September 1 to November 30. Hawk watching was a passion, not a job. Back in 1976, there were maybe six people in

North America who could call themselves professional hawk counters. My official title was even underscored by the federal government. The season count ended when hawk migration ended. Applying, somewhat naively, for unemployment benefits, I was told I’d waited too long since terminating my job as a carpet installer. But the resourceful social worker came up with a program designed for migrant workers. “Yes,” I confided, “I certainly qualify for that. Counting migrants is what I do.”

The Perfect Fit

Now, 42 years later, I am brought to regard today’s young hawk watchers on the platform and wonder if they ever contemplate the uncertain path that led to their “Season at the Point.” Even today, the number of professional hawk counters in the US work force, is very limited — under 50 I’ll wager. And even though my eyes are not what they used to be and I find I can no longer stand for 10 hours at a stretch, any time those counters need a day off, I’ll be happy to get off the bench and count migrants for an inning or so. Fortunately, optical improvements have kept pace with my diminished visual acuity. Now all I need to do is figure out how to compensate for all the floaters that gather in swirling “kettles” every time I train my eyes on a clear blue sky. It’s certain I could break the one day broad-winged record even if there wasn’t a hawk in the sky by counting floaters. Maybe, it’s better I stay on the bench and leave the counting to young eyes.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

JACK is a sweet and, importantly, housetrained Chesapeake Bay retriever and lab mix. He’s also been diagnosed with OCD (really!) meaning he’s very engaged with his toys. How cute/quirky is that? Just like some people, Jack would prefer a home without kids. He would also prefer an exclusive relationship — ie, he wants to be your only dog.

MARCY is six months old and arrived at the shelter as a stray. Although she is playful and friendly, she has not had any training. Marcy will make a good pet for someone who has the time and energy for training. She is very young and good natured. Marcy will be best placed in an adult household or one with more mature children. Adopt today!

MOLLY and BRIAN are a bonded pair of adult beagles that should be adopted together — this affectionate duo has been together since birth, and you don’t want to break up the band. After playtime, they curl up together on their blanket to relax. They’re both great with other pets and, well, just look at those faces! All together now: Awwww.

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

DALSU’S personality is just as fun as his name! He is nothing more than the biggest love bug you will ever find. Weighing in at 21lbs, Dalsu is the largest boy at the shelter. He wants nothing more than to crush your lap and be squeezed with a hug. And that’s exactly what Dalsu is looking for. A home with loving hearts as big as he!

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

BINX they call him. But his full name is Bartholomew Baxter Bartok. Quite a mouthful! You can’t tell in this picture, but Binx here has gorgeous green eyes that pop with his gray and white coat. He’s quite the handsome fella! He’s got the looks, now all Binx needs is the love. So spread some love this holiday and adopt Binx today!
