Hospitality Night on Washington Street Mall took place on December 6-7. This heartwarming experience was not just because of all the free wine and cheese... although that didn’t hurt. It was a real chance to meet the lovely folks who run businesses on the Washington Street Mall, and to remember how wonderful and important shopping locally can be. Let’s keep shopping local all year, not just at Christmas!

The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What’s the deal with earwax? Made of sloughed-off skin cells and secretions from glands within the ear, ear wax is necessary for shielding your ears from bacteria and dust. Weird fact: You’ll secrete more of it when you’re afraid. File this under Things You Didn’t Know and Probably Didn’t Need to Know, Either.

TRACEN Cape May is the only coast guard training center in the nation. The base is the fifth largest in the country. It includes the coast guard’s biggest hospital as well as the maintenance facilities that support military ships which deploy from the harbor for, say, enforcing treaties or enacting counterdrug missions. Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ave to love it when local businesses support people less fortunate. It’s the sign of a healthy, vibrant community... and there are lots of examples of this kind of spirit being alive and well in Cape May. The latest example is the Merion Inn, which is hosting a Christmas Dinner Fundraiser for the Homeless on Tuesday, December 25. All of the proceeds (that’s 100%) from Christmas Day dinner sales at the Merion will be donated to the emergency fund for the homeless under the joint administration of A Voice for the Homeless of Cape May County and The Branches Episcopal Outreach Center in Stone Harbor. To eat a three-course Christmas dinner at this beloved Cape May eatery will cost $65 ($30 children), with seating from 2:30 to 7:00pm. Enjoy live piano music and a keepsake photo... and you’ll know that every penny of it goes back to help people less fortunate than you. Call 609-884-8363 for reservations. Good job, guys.

³

Speaking of fun events that give something back, the 15th annual Exit Zero Burns Supper is happening, as always, at the end of January. On Saturday, January 26, nearly 400 people will file into Convention Hall for what is now one of the biggest celebrations of poet Robert Burns in the world. It’s true! Calgary has us beaten (more than 500 turn up for that) and there’s an event in Dumfries, Scotland that attracts thousands over the course of a week. But still... little Cape May!

There will be 385 people seated caféstyle, enjoying great Celtic music from Philadelphia’s the John Byrne band, plus Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks (translation: No Pants) band. The food will once again be catered by our friends at the Washington Inn, who did a fabulous job last year. Meat lovers can feast on scotch egg and either shepherd’s pie or haggis, while veggies will be offered scotch broth and veggie haggis (which is seriously good). Robert Burns, in case you are unaware, is the great 18th-century Scots poet — he wrote Auld Lang Syne among many others — who is honored at Burns Suppers all over the world. Tickets for all that entertainment and food cost $45. Buy them online at ezstore.us, or call our store at 609-770-8479. Another fun event? Brinch with the Grinch this Saturday and Sunday at Exit Zero Filling Station, from 9-1. Enjoy great food and a really grumpy green guy. No reservations required. See you there!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Brenda Freeman from The Lobster House is up. How long have you been bartending? 28 years. Favorite drink to serve? A chocolate martini because I make them very well. I also beat my co-worker Chuck in a chocolate martini contest! What’s your bartending pet peeve? I’d have to say taking credit cards. Because almost everyone pays with one and with the new chip it takes so much longer for one transaction! Biggest tip? $100

BEER OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Fizz the Season - Brut IPA The dryness mimics that of a carbonated beverage from the Champagne region of France, which lends a crispness that accentuates the two hops sporting a white grape-like flavor. This brew is nearly translucent, extra dry, and super effervescent.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Collier’s Liquor Store Pendulum Cabernet On sale - $16.99 Alluring aromatics of black pepper, charred oak, and dark berries introduce notes of van cherry, red apple and sweet fresh tobacco on the palate. Pair with grilled meats, vegetables or simply by the glass.

Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that fluke are in season. Did you know that all fluke are flounder but not all flounder are fluke. Generally speaking, left-side up flounder are flukes, and right-side up flounders are called flounders. A fluke’s eyes are on the left side whereas a flounder’s eyes are on the right.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

ndertow Public Service Announcement: Please wait until at least January 1, 2019 before placing your chairs for next year’s Christmas parade. I tried for, like, 12 minutes to think up another Suess-ian rhyme about Brinch with the Grinch this Saturday and Sunday, 9-1 at Exit Zero Filling Station, but rhymes are really hard, so instead I’ll just tell you to come to Brinch with the Grinch this Saturday and Sunday, 9-1 at Exit Zero Filling Station. Blublation. I’ve heard there’s going to be a green eggs and ham curry and… know what? I can’t finish that joke because I just made myself a little bit sick. Stop on by. I’d like to apologize for smooching all over Curtis Bashaw after the Congress Hall tree lighting last week, but I was feeling pretty gay. GAY WITH YULETIDE SPIRIT! (And whiskey.) But still, that is no excuse for non-consensual cheek slobbering. Seriously, I was like a puppy. Greg and Adrienne Owens stopped into the Filling Station for breakfast. When I asked their names for the column, Greg said,

“We’ve already been fodder for the column.” I said, “Well, I guess I’ll just have to re-fodder you then.” This drew a laugh, but I wish I’d been quick enough to have made a “hello modder, hello fodder” joke. Regardless, Adrienne had the Big Country bowl (tater tots and cheese sauce topped with eggs, bacon and sausage, super-yummy) and Greg had the Cheesy Thai bowl (rice, curry sauce, eggs) to which I remarked, “Here’s a Cheesy Thai for a cheesy guy.” I’m beginning to realize now why I never made it as a joke writer. I wasn’t able to overhear the devious

plans of Filling Station cabal Dave Clemans and Jim Moffat this week, as I was working in the gift shop at the time, but they brought Ed Henry with them this time, which is never a good sign. They’re either opening a restaurant or planning the New World Order. Or both. “Welcome to the New World, can I take your New World Order?” (Writing jokes as layered as these isn’t as easy as I make it look…) Speaking of Dave Clemans (Segue Alert! Also, did you know the guy who invented the Segway died when he drove his Segway off a cliff? True story.), if you’d like to know more than you ever wanted to about him (and his lovely bride, Christina), be sure to pick up his latest book, Destination: Exit 0. It’s a deep dive into his life, which is interesting if you like Dave Clemans, and into the B&B era of Cape May, which is very interesting. (Author’s note: this paragraph was written before Dave walked into the shop and told me I’m getting handsomer every day, which I clearly am. Thanks, Dave, you too!) Zero Burns Supper, a weekend-long celebration of all things... well, both things Scottish; haggis and whisky. Purchase your tickets by calling us at 609-770-8479. It’s going to be a hoot, man! This Week in Things I Never Do: Hit the open mic at Mad Batter last Sunday. Tim Joyce accompanied and we used our 20 minutes on some U2, Don Henley and Ed Sheeran. And Don Shough (Shaw) was kind enough to let me grab a harmony on “Reelin’ in the Years.” I also got to catch up with, among others, Bob Riper and Claire Reeves, Wendy and Randy Redelico (DING!), and Cape May gadabout John Cooke, who is everywhere and nowhere, a whiskey-sipping phantom. Also met a couple from Maryland who caught TNT: Christmas Edition at the tree lighting and thoroughly enjoyed it. I still can’t believe how much fun that was. Anyway, The MBOM has become a Sunday ritual for a lot of folks and it’s easy to see why. Jimm Ross, filling in for MQ Murphy, was a generous host, and all the players were interesting. Hope to be back soon. Caught a lot of raised eyebrows last week as I filled in for regular Exit Zero delivery guy Mike DeMusz. Most of them raised in disappointment that I wasn’t Mike. (FYI, 2000 copies of EZ to about 100 locations in West Cape May, Cape May Point, North Cape May, Villas and Rio Grande covers roughly 80 miles and takes six hours. Which is pretty impressive because I did it all on foot.) One of those raised eyebrows, the only hair he has left, belonged to Mark Chamberlain. (When will this bald-on-bald violence end?) Mark is an owner at North Beach Health Club in NCM. I started to say, “Hey, Mark, I’m thinking about…” He cut me off, “Don’t even tell me you want to start working out again!” (Mark’s a real motivator.) When I said, “No, I want to try to run the Hallowed Half Marathon next October,” he gave me sev-

December 13, 2018 eral minutes of excellent training advice. This, on top of the list of recommended running shoes I got from avid runner (most of the time) Diane Stopyra, will make running it a cinch! Right? Right? I’m going to die, aren’t I. Inkwell owner/operator Heidi Cummings stopped in for a bite with a gaggle of friends on Sunday morning. I’m only writing this so Heidi knows I haven’t forgotten the money I owe her for those Beatles Night T-shirts she made me in February, which I wouldn’t owe her at all if more of you cheap bastards had bought some Beatles Night T-shirts. In a related matter, I now have enough Beatles Night T-shirts to last me several more Beatles Nights. (The Seventh Annual Beatles Night, Cape May are 1/20 & 2/17 at Cabanas.) Lastly this week, had a disconcerting conversation with EZ chief Jack Wright about whether my Sherlock Holmes story would work better as a serialized novella in these very pages or if it was better suited as a the foundation for a new book (my first book, Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales, is available on the interwebs for around a penny). He replied, and I paraphrase, “I’d love to do a new book with you, but I’ve already got a bunch of great books on my shelves with really interesting back stories that aren’t moving at all.” So while you’re out doing your holiday book-buying, stop by the EZFS and pick up some local works like The Cape, In the Land of Exit Zero or Privilege of the Dead, to name a few. It would mean a whole lot to a handful of people. (No, I’m not saying this so you’ll buy my book; Murder-Oke sold out its initial print run of 3,000 earlier this summer, but if you feel bad that it’s not available in the shop, just hand me $10 next time you see me and we’ll call it even). So, if you can, please support your local arts and artists. Because if you ignore us, we’ll only beg harder. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have the greatest Christmas gif for all of you. No, no, not another year of me as benevolent unofficial ruler, style guru and inappropriately affectionate uncle-figure: that comes as standard. And not a repeat of that time I bought every man, woman and child a bejeweled elephant. How was I to know that rather than being the “affectionate ex circus elephants who adore doing tricks and taking people for rides” the ad suggested, they were in fact vicious attack elephants liberated from Saddam’s palace. It was fortunate – if messy – that Ernie Hemingway was in town that weekend with his hunting rifle. I will not describe events in detail. Suffice of to say that every house in our dear city received a complementary elephant’s foot umbrella stand and a set of ivory chess pieces. Nor will it be a replay of the year I gave (note to everyone: “gifted” is not a verb. Not is “trepidated” an adjective) each citizen a million pounds in cash. I had hoped that the result would be a trickledown of money to artisans and tradesmen as worthy citizens constructed museums, art galleries and sports fields. And

possibly a statue of myself. But no: instead, most of you added a ludicrous “games room” to your homes, featuring a pool table and a gauche mini-bar, and then purchased jet skis. The waters around Cape May sounded like an irritated wasp’s nest until I had Kitchener fetch our supply of salvaged torpedoes from that Nazi U-boat we sank. What a fun afternoon we had! This year I will give you Cape May. No, bear with me and put down the telephone you have on speed dial to the Bide-a-Wee

Rest Home for Special Gentlemen in Stimpson Lane. I mean I am giving up my legal ownership of Cape May, and will return it to you, the common masses. Normally that entails the formation of a trust of upstanding citizens and incorruptible public servants, but as we are in short supply of both, I have decided instead that the city will be split into equally sized and randomly assigned lots. We have called in the best minds (I asked Wally from the takeout, as he’s a whizz with the math) and calculated that you will each receive 2,450 square feet. That is a square measuring around 50 feet on a side. Once our supercomputer (purchased from the government in a fire sale in 1964 for $100) in the basement of the D’Catur Mansion has a few spare weeks to crunch the numbers, you will all be assigned your new land. And be compelled to live on it. Of course, that will mean some of you owning an entire narrow condo, while others will be restricted to a small patch of swamp, but I like to think it will bring out the best in you! I will be immune as the Mansion is officially Part of Liberia. More of that later, my friends...

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, holiday freebies

n the American melting pot, we have the freedom to celebrate in our own ways. This idea became real to me years ago, when I bonded with co-workers who covered each other’s winter holidays. We thanked each other with a new tradition — a January gathering that blends cultures and cuisines and demonstrated that latkes, milk-soaked dates and sugar cookies work together in a buffet. For us and the children we’ve added over the years, it’s the essential finale for the season. Some people consider a pre-dawn shopping trip a tradition; others must watch A Charlie Brown Christmas. Some find holiness in nature, others turn to houses of worship. Some families pile on the presents, others follow the four gift rule: something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. Still others follow a strict “no presents” rule, firmly convinced that the best things in life are free. Whatever your tradition, you can probably use a few more freebies. Cape May offers lots of free things to do this time of year. Bundle up and visit

the Cape May County Zoo to see how the animals are enjoying the winter. Put extra steps on your Fitbit with an evening stroll to enjoy the holiday lights and decorations. Stay out late and go stargazing. If you’re a morning person, get up early and comb the beach for sea glass and driftwood. Winter storms send lots of treasures on to the sand, and the cold keeps all but the most dedicated hunters away. Window shop. Go caroling and sing with enthusiasm, even if you can’t carry a tune. Visit the exhibit at the Carroll Gallery

at the Emlen Physick Estate. An Old-Fashioned Christmas showcases holiday traditions through the years and features model trains, toys and more. The exhibit is open daily, except Christmas, through January 1. Admission is free. Visit capemaymac.org for hours. Enjoy a free holiday concert of sixty voices performing traditional and secular music with the Angelus Chorus Holiday Concert at Convention Hall on Wednesday, December 12 at 7:00pm. Admission is free. Or visit St John Neumann Catholic Church in North Cape May for the Community Band Holiday Concert on Tuesday, December 18 at 7:00pm. The program is designed for audiences of all ages and invites you to sing along to your favorite Christmas tunes. If you’re a MAC member, the Lunch & Learn series is free, and it’s only $5 for non-members. Bring a bag lunch to Cape May Lutheran Church on Wednesdays and learn more about history, culture and the arts. Beverages will be provided. For information, call 609-884-5404.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I do not know what to give my children and grandchildren for Christmas. They are of an age now where I don’t know how to please them and I am tired of trying. I have a son, a daughter, four grandchildren, 8-12; a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law. What do I do with that? — Perplexed In WCM Dear Perplexed The Answer Lady has the perfect solution. Give them the gift of Cape May, beginning with a trolley ride, sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. There are any number to choose from and you can hire a private trolley if the tour you want is sold out, which it may be. Also, Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland is worth the visit. The rides are

Wise answers to perplexing questions

mostly for wee ones, except for the merrygo-round, but the festive atmosphere puts a smile on your face. There are kiosks to peruse, hot chocolate to be sipped and a nice fire ins the Blue Pig Tavern when the gang is ready for a burger. Finally, a horse and carriage ride is fantastic in this crisp, wintry weather and will take them back in time. Just make sure you bundle up. Dear Answer Lady I want to have a cocktail party before the holidays are over, but I have a friend, not

a close friend but more than an acquaintance, who can be antagonistic and aggressively opinionated. I would like to leave her off the guest list. But this is a small town and word will get back to her. Is there diplomatic way to handle this? — Party Time Dear Party Time The question you need to ask yourself is: if you don’t invite her and she finds out, will the potential loss of her friendship be worth it? Most people are able to maintain a cordial persona in a festive setting — how she expresses herself with you may not be how she is in a formal social milieu. One thing you must not do is lie. Invite her or not, but do not make up some fabrication because you want to spare her feelings. That’s an insult from which no one recovers. If she finds out and says something, could say, “I know you don’t get along with such-and-such and thought it would be better if you and went to lunch at Tisha’s.” The Answer Lady feels you should invite her and have faith in her ability to respect your friendship. If she’s incapable of that, then why is she considered a friend?

The Movie Column

M

Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Green Book”

y list of favorite Christmas movies has a subcategory called “accidental holiday flicks.” Die Hard makes this list... a few others, too. These films probably didn’t plan to be seasonal classics, but they happen to capture the spirit. Green Book is now on this list — and on my list of top movies this year. Oscar buzz has already started on this one since it picked up several well-deserved Golden Globe nominations last week. Let me jump on that bandwagon! The year was 1962. Viggo Mortensen plays Tony Lip, an out-of-work club bouncer of Italian descent. Mahershala Ali plays Dr Don Shirley, a world-class pianist and composer of African descent. Shirley is embarking on a concert tour throughout the deep South, and knows he needs a driver but more likely a bodyguard as well. Tony confronts horrific racism in the south like he’s never seen before — well, except maybe in his own heart. He needs to overcome his prejudices while protecting his new boss.

Mortensen and Ali shine in Green Book The pianist comes to a new city and wanders to places no person of color should go when visiting the south in the early 1960s. (Unfortunately, the same story could be told today with only incidental modifications.) Few movies straddle broad social issues and particular interpersonal dynamics as well as this film — certainly none better this year. The dialogue is heartfelt and delivered by two of the finest actors working today. Both actors received Golden Globe nominations — Mortensen for lead, Ali for supporting. Mortensen has received two previous Oscar lead actor nominations for Captain

Fantastic (2016) and Eastern Promises (2007). It would be Ali’s second Oscar should he be nominated and win. He had already won for best supporting actor in the hit Moonlight (2016). Director Peter Farrelly has picked up his first two Golden Globe nominations for screenplay and directing for Green Book, and he will likely get his first nod from Oscar this year. He’s known for quirky films that I’ve liked such as Shallow Hal (2001), Fever Pitch (2005) and Stuck on You (2003). He’s also the culprit behind some flicks I wasn’t even able to finish, like Dumb and Dumber (1994) and Hall Pass (2011). Please, Mr Undertow, I know you probably own the last two on DVD. No commentary please. It would not be surprising if Green Book swept the Oscars, but more than likely it will receive one or two big categories. The artistic direction was superior coupled with outstanding direction, acting, and dialogue. Don’t miss this new accidental holiday classic. Meantime save the date: The Cape May Film Society Oscar party will be February 24, 2019. We will have details as they are finalized.

Bird Droppings

F

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

all migration is over, Nothing to do but curl up and hibernate until spring, right? Not the worst idea, but just because birds have mostly stopped migrating, doesn’t mean there are no birds to be found. Lots of ducks, more than 20 species, are all there for your viewing pleasure. Take a spin around Lake Lily or a trip to Bunker Pond or a walk around the South Cape May Meadows. Ducks are large, colorful and they play fair by staying in the open. Habituated to people, they can be approached close enough to see distinguishing characteristics with binoculars alone. Of course, you’ll need a field guide to tell them apart. Years ago, in front of the Northwood Center in Cape May Point, I met an effervescent young birder to be named Patty. Inquiring as to what ducks she was seeing, I was treated to a look of near bewilderment. Looking down at her hands I was not surprised to find the Audubon bird guide. There’s your problem, I offered. Get rid of that (expletive deleted) book and buy a guide

that works. It took two days before she came storming into my office demanding to know what was wrong with her guide, given to her, I came to learn, by her boyfriend. I told her why the guide was flawed and she went out the door with another. That was 30 years ago and Patty is now a bird bander whose road to conversion began by buying a field guide that works. Happily, there are a number of fine guides on the market. Stop by the Northwood Center and ask for a recommendation,

then step outside, study Lake Lily and set foot on an adventure that can take you all over the world. Your next stop might be the Concrete Ship, where you will find assorted diving ducks, most notably black and surf scoter, and maybe red-breasted merganser or even an eider. These hardy northern ducks like rocky coast and the mussels they provide. The concrete ship and Avalon’s seawall are as close to rocky coast as we get around here. If you look offshore you may see strings of waterfowl hugging the horizon. Some of these are lesser scaup. The large black-andwhite birds arrowing into the water are northern gannet, a sullid species. To find other sullids, like brown and redfooted booby, you’ll need to head for tropical waters, which seems like a pretty fine idea. So, ducks for the budget minded; Boobies and frigatebirds if you can spring for a trip to the tropics. Birds are everywhere. Pack binoculars and high expectations. The birding road begins at Lake Lily but it extends to the most remote corners of the planet.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BOOMER is a little over a year old and is very energetic. He was stressed when he arrived at the shelter, but has become increasing friendly as he gets to know the volunteers and shelter staff. He’s looking for an adult household or one with older children and one that will keep him active and occupied. Bring Boomer home for Christmas!

NERO is a six year old, house trained, well mannered rottweiler that has been in the shelter since July 28, 2018. His size alone is impressive! Weighing in at 150 pounds this guy is one BIG dog! Nero is comfortable in a car and friendly toward people. He lived in an adult household until his owner could no longer care for him. Adopt today!

MOLLY and BRIAN are a bonded pair of adult beagles that should be adopted together — this affectionate duo has been together since birth, and you don’t want to break up the band. After playtime, they curl up together on their blanket to relax. They’re both great with other pets and, well, just look at those faces! All together now: Awwww.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

DUSTY was born in beautiful Victorian Cape May. He was a happy kitten. He was loved, played, hunted like any other kitten. Other cats came and went but Dusty was special. His owner knew he could never part with him. Unfortunately, Dusty’s owner passed leaving him alone, sad and scared. Won’t you be the one to make him happy again? Adopt!

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

BOWIE is not the “rebel rebel” given his rockstar name. He is just looking for some “modern love” like “all the young dudes” are looking for! So if you’re looking for some sweet, furry “changes” in your life, then stop by the shelter and adopt Bowie today! He’s the puurfect holiday present a music lover could get!
