Brinch With The Grinch Brinch with the Grinch at Exit Zero Filling Station last weekend featured a festive dining room, servers dressed as Whos, the Jim Carey version of The Grinch who Stole Christmas playing on the TV, some green-themed menu additions and, of course, the mean one himself skulking around our fireplace. The Grinch harassed, er, took pictures with eager customers and gave out Christmas presents. Okay, the presents were just pieces of fruit, but this IS the Grinch we’re talking about. We weren’t expecting it, but we think the grownups had more fun than the kids...

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Where do reindeer get their name? Nothing to do with the reins of a sled. It comes from the old Norse word (hreinn) for deer. Another fun fact? While you’ve heard of Rudolph’s glowing nose, all reindeer sniffers are pretty special — they’re designed to warm air before it gets to the lungs.

Harriet Tubman, who helped slaves to liberty via her Underground Railroad, worked as a cook at The Mansion House, on Washington Street, in the early 1850s. The Macedonia Baptist Church will be converted into a museum honoring Tubman by 2020.
The bad news? Many of New Jersey’s 22 snake species can be found in Cape May County. The good? All are harmless. One type, the black racer, grows up to 60 inches. He’ll slither away from approaching humans... or lift his head to study you.
St Peters by the Sea Episcopal Church in Cape May Point is one of the quaintest (and most photographed) on the island. It was built in 1876 at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, but as the event closed down, the frame was dismantled and shipped to the Point, a hamlet founded as a religious community the year before by John Wanamaker of the Philadelphia department store. Due to beach erosion, the church was moved a block in 1896 to its present location on Lake Drive.

Ramblings From The Editor
C
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
all me unoriginal and repetitive (hey, I’ve been called worse!), but I’m going to bang the same drum as last week for two reasons. Number one: It’s the season of goodwill and I don’t have anything controversial to share with you (yet...). Number two: There are a couple events you need to know about, and maybe you weren’t fully paying attention last week, what with all the Christmas shopping you have to do and all those parties you need to attend. First up, our friends at the Merion Inn are hosting a Christmas Dinner Fundraiser for the Homeless on Tuesday, December 25, aka Christmas Day. All of the proceeds from dinner sales will be donated to the emergency fund for the homeless under the joint administration of A Voice for the Homeless of Cape May County and The Branches Episcopal Outreach Center in Stone Harbor. To eat a three-course Christmas dinner at this beloved Cape May eatery will cost $65 ($30 children), with seating from 2:30 to 7:00pm. Enjoy live piano music and a
keepsake photo... and you’ll know that every penny of it goes back to help people less fortunate than you. Call 609-884-8363 for reservations. Secondly, this is the penultimate opportunity I have to remind you that the 15th annual Exit Zero Burns Supper is happening on Saturday, January 26. On that night, nearly 400 people will file into Convention Hall for what is now one of the biggest celebrations of poet Robert Burns in the world. For those who keep
count, Calgary has us beaten (more than 500 turn up for that) and there’s an event in Dumfries, Scotland that attracts thousands over the course of a week. There will be 385 people seated caféstyle, enjoying great Celtic music from Philadelphia’s the John Byrne band, plus Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks band. The food and drink will once again be catered by our friends at the Washington Inn, who did a fabulous job last year. Meat lovers can feast on scotch egg and either shepherd’s pie or haggis, while veggies will be offered scotch broth and veggie haggis (which is seriously good). Robert Burns is the great 18th-century Scots poet — he wrote Auld Lang Syne among many others — who is honored at Burns Suppers all over the world. Tickets for all that entertainment and food cost $45. Buy them online at ezstore.us, or call our store at 609-770-8479. In the meantime, Merry Christmas!!!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Bobby Ransom from The Boiler Room is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to serve? A cosmo. Because the ladies love them and I make them really well. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers order one drink at a time instead of giving their whole order from the start. Biggest tip? $100 on a $5 bill. Nice. Thanks Bobby!
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Aiding and A’Bretting - ABV: 8.5% Normally responsible for ensuring Brett and bacteria stay out of the beers, the Lab Team threw caution to the wind – then aggressively hopped this Brett-filled IPA with Idaho 7 and Azacca. The result is dry, fruity and abundantly hoppy.
Sunset Liquors Schild Estate Sparkling Shiraz - $24.99 “Red fizz” shows full, round and textural up front with juicy Morello cherry and berry fruit flavors sitting alongside teasing glimpses of chocolate. The perfect holiday bottle of bubbly!
Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that loligo squid are in season. Did you know that squid change color to blend in with its surroundings and so becomes invisible to both its prey and predators? And the squid’s only defense is to escape behind the dark clouds of “ink” that it squirts into the water?

I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
t’s perfectly normal to be six days from Christmas and have no tree, no presents and no money to buy presents, isn’t it? Ah, the holidays… My second go-round as the Exit Zero Delivery Guy went a little smoother than the first. With a few route changes and more familiarity with the turf, I was able to trim my mileage (80.7 to 68.5) and time (a shade over six hours to five-anda-half), though people still seemed disappointed I wasn’t Mike DeMusz. I can’t help it if he’s younger and thinner and almost as handsome as me. I was born this way! Then I ate a lot. Speaking of Mike DeMusz (a little early in the column for a segue this smooth, isn’t it?), kudos are in order to he and Uncle Brian DeMusz for the installation of the nifty new mural on the grand wall of the Exit Zero Filling Station. Impressive work in a short period of time. Rumor has it they may tackle an exterior wall next. Or as Brian puts it, “Same brush, different wall.” Painter humor, amirite? Sad Sight of the Week: A very nice pair
of glasses sitting in the urinal in the Boiler Room men’s room. (TNT Acoustic played the Brown Room on Sunday night.). If nothing else, they had a pretty good view of the Eagles’ playoff chances. Speaking of the Brown Room and the Eagles (the super-rare double-segue, do not try this at home, you might strain something), Sunday was hella banging for both! (Do the kids still say hella?) BDN has, for now, given the Eagles life (BDN is a nickname for Nick Foles. Just Google it. If you’re over 18.) and Tim Joyce and I had yet another
incredible night there. Our entire fall/winter run there has been a massive success, with this past Sunday being the most massive-est. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s becoming a little bit magical. (Hey, it’s the holidays, let an old man be a little hyperbolic.) There’s something about that room that connects us to our audience. We have one more date there, the 30th, and I’d love for you to come see what I’m talking about. I hope everyone that plays there feels the same because it’s an awesome way to feel. Also awesome? Seeing John and Suzanne Cooke in said Brown Room. I mean, I assume it was John; same height, same weight, same face, but he was drinking wine. JOHN! BLINK IF YOU’RE BEING HELD AGAINST YOUR WILL! Of course, they were only there for our first set, then traipsed off to The Mad Batter for open mic night, as so many people do. (I encourage this; the MBOM is a great time, just throw TNT a little love on your way to or fro.) So I saw this quintet of 20-somethings in The Brown Room that I’d also seen at the

Filling Station earlier that morning, and thought it pretty rude that they didn’t acknowledge me or say hello or something. Then it dawned on me that they hadn’t seen my face as when I saw them that morning I was in my Grinch mask and costume. I told them this story and boy did we have a laugh! Well, I had a laugh. Okay, nobody laughed, but at least it was super-awkward. (Important Safety Tip to Future-Self: If you feel like you’re allergic to something in the Grinch costume that is making you itchy and closing your throat and you have to sing late that night, you probably are. Though at least my Don Henley sounded really Don Henley.) North Beach Gym guy Mark Chamberlain texted me to offer congratulations on my sick burn at his expense last week. See? Mark gets it. Mark is also an excellent trainer and motivator. And his skepticism of my intention to run that half-marathon in October is well-earned; the last time I was in his gym he put me through a very mild workout that resulted in my almost needing an ambulance. And I’ve only smoked about 10,000 cigarettes since then, so… yeah. (I really am going to die, aren’t I.) Man, I should have taken that part in An Actor’s Carol that Roy Steinberg offered me back in April (when we recorded the first and, so far, only episode of the Cape May Arts podcast). That show looks like a blast. Chapter Four of my autobiography, “The Most Famous Person You Never Heard Of”, will be titled “The SixTimes I Almost Worked at Cape May Stage.” Served breakfast to Karin Rickard last week and she shared some of the local hot gossip with me. Of course, I won’t divulge it here as I am the picture of confidentiality. Karin, on the other hand… (THIS IS A JOKE. Karin simply shared a rumor she’d heard about me that is completely false and I’d need my head examined if it were true. The really good stuff was all about Bill Caterini and not fit for print in this family-friendly
December 20, 2018 magazine. ALSO A JOKE. Calm down, Bill. I can see your face getting red from here...) The other day I served lunch to Philip and Zach Boyd (how do I know their names? From our Exit Zero Frequent Filler sign-up sheet, where you can receive 7.5% cash back on every visit to the restaurant or gift shop, and your local gossip columnist can acquire your names, addresses and emails. This is how journalism works, right?), who are local “builders” of indeterminate things. Zach is hoping to be the Exit Zero Bartender of the Week one of these days (he works at the Rusty Nail, where he recognized me as a singer in an acoustic duo. Mind you, he didn’t say he liked my singing, only that he knew I sang there). I told him to hang in there; there’s a finite number of bartenders, his number is bound to come up eventually. And Philip brought his girlfriend to Scrooge at Elaine’s a couple of years ago, and she proceeded to blurt out “God bless us, everyone!” just before my fiveyear-old Tiny Tim. It’s cool. It’s only the most famous line in the show. But never fear; we exacted our revenge by completely humiliating her as she returned from the ladies’ room. And isn’t that what Christmas is all about? (In a karmic boomerang as vicious as it was predictable, it just took me four tries and 25 minutes to enter Philip’s info into our computer system. Well played, universe…) Speaking of the Exit Zero Frequent Filler program, we have one! All we need is your name, address, email address, birthday, social security number, credit card number (plus threedigit verification code), blood type and next of kin. It’s as simple as that! (Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration; name, address, email and birthday will do. And ladies, I will enter ALL your birth years as no earlier than 1980, because I’m a gentleman.) ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
B
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
race yourselves for Santa! For I will be coming down YOUR chimney, with my bulging sack and giving you a good... ah, I can’t do these gags any more. I’m worn out from all those years of it. In fact, I think my days of dressing up as that fat rogue are over. And it’s not just that today’s children are vile and entitled. Or that Christmas lists used to be a few carefully penned items on a piece of fine paper, rolled up and placed carefully on the spikes on the cast iron fence that surrounds the D’Catur Mansion (all local kids know that Santa and I have a close relationship, and that if you offend one of us, then best beware the wroth of the other. Not many know that the actual Santa is on a 20-stretch on Riker’s Island for some very non-festive acts. Actually, they were festive, but only for him. And that I have taken up his mantle and at huge risk (have you ever tried to drive a flying sleigh? It’s harder than finding a parking spot on Beach in season) and expense (You thought the elves actually made those fabulous Faberge Eggs so many of you have
received? Those layabouts do little other than sit around drinking eggnog and farting in time to a capella versions of “Deck The Halls”). But I am tired of it all – too many glasses of warm beer, an excess of cheap candy and too many friction burns from coming down too many chimneys. I know, I hear you say that sounds like an average Friday night in Wildwood. But it’s no laughing matter. So I am handing over the sable mantle to whoever I judge to be the best local candidate. I will not be conducting interviews as such:
no, I have been able to watch and evaluate every one of you for years. I was initially going to give it to Boris the Silverback barman, as he is both efficient and taciturn, but the poor dear goes ape (ahaha) for a banana, and that can be a hazard. Young Albert was up for it, but really, there’s no amount of suspension of belief that can make a Yorkshire Terrier Santa plausible, especially when he is prone to savaging the ankles of anyone he finds sleeping in their beds. That leaves a shortlist of demands that I fear cannot be easily met — the right candidate needs to be burly, possessed of a booming voice he (or she) is fond of using (preferably with an accent of some European stripe), glib, able to handle infeasible quantities of alcohol without passing out, and with an in-depth knowledge of our fair city. Furthermore, they should have muscular calves, as those will be the first thing any late-to-bed witnesses will see. Also, they should be able to read well, for deciphering all those notes from sugar-infused kids. I am at a loss, so will ask the brutish editor of this very rag if he knows anyone.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, holiday yarns
ccording to the Farmer’s Almanac, we’ve got a hard winter ahead. The experts at the almanac haven’t revealed the formula behind their remarkably accurate predictions over the past 226 years, but they do offer some clues. Spiders supposedly build larger webs before bad winters, and corn husks are thicker than normal. The snowy owl will arrive early. Acorns are abundant. The monarch butterfly departs early. If you kept track, for every day of fog in August, there will be a snowfall in winter. Add it all up, and the Farmer’s Almanac predicts a long, cold winter, with average snowfall but low temperatures, lingering well into spring. Faced with the prospect of a hard winter ahead, add a little softness into your life. “Knitting is the new yoga,” claim the folks at Fiber Arts Yarn Shop in the Washington Commons. Knitting is a great hobby that lets you relax and feel productive at the same time. It’s a unisex activity in most of the world, and, as you work, you keep yourself warm. Knitting and crocheting are rel-
atively cheap and easy to get started, and beginner mittens or potholders make great gifts. Perhaps your pet needs an extra layer for those early morning walks. A knit hat can be completed in a weekend, and legwarmers are back in style — perfect for the teen who won’t give up her leggings when the mercury falls. Or, form a knitting group and turn squares of scrap yarn into afghans for people in need. Fiber Arts offers free help with your projects when the store is open. They can help knitters of all levels decide how ambitious they want to be — for example, cables
are impressive, and more doable than you may think, but you do have to concentrate. Let the staff guide you, or wander through the store and let the yarn pick your project. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm at 542 New England Road also offers a selection of fine yarns to soften up your winter, along with premade items like scarves, stoles, gloves, sweaters, bags, and blankets. Their yarns tend to the natural colors, like white, tan, rose, gray and black. They offer different grades for different projects along with finished products. The farm store is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm or by appointment. As a bonus, you can meet the alpacas. West End Garage offers a selection from the Bay Springs Alpaca Farm, as well as 60 other vendors to keep you cozy. Housed in a building that began life as a gas station, West End Garage is now a year-round magnet for shoppers looking for unusual gifts. They have a cafe to warm you up, and special holiday hours — open Christmas Eve until 2pm, and and New Year’s Eve until 5pm.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My niece’s wedding was in July and we were unable to attend because of a health issue. Now it’s Christmas and I still haven’t given her a gift. To make matters worse, she is my goddaughter. How late is too late? One reason this happened is that we did not care for the selections on the gift registry and wanted to do something more significant. Alas, we ended up doing nothing at all. Do I make the cash gift I had planned a Christmas present instead? — Delinquent Uncle Dear Delinquent The rule used to be that you had up to a year after attending a wedding to send a gift, but The Answer Lady’s research now indicates that the consensus is that you should aim to have your gift delivered by

the three-month mark. It allows the couple to get their wedding thank-you notes out within six months of the wedding. Pop into the Whale’s Tale and buy a beautiful holiday card, slip your check into it and include a note apologizing for the tardiness. Tell them you hope your gift will help ensure they have a blessed holiday and a joyous first year of marriage. You might also consider giving them a romantic weekend in Cape May at one of our lovely B&Bs like the Queen Victoria or the Peter Shields Inn.
Dear Answer Lady I just started dating a woman in November and I want to know what do I do about Christmas? I’ve been caught in this quagmire before and I don’t like it. What present do I buy? Too much and she’ll be looking at wedding dresses. Too little and I’m left out in the snow without a hat or coat. How do I straddle this landmine? – Jittery in Cape May Point Dear Jittery Bah! Humbug! You can’t figure out what to buy someone you care enough about to see on a regular basis? A bouquet of flowers from Kate’s. Something beautiful from Splash. Something elegant from Lace Silhouettes. Some combination of those would be ideal. The Answer Lady would add that you think too much and the spirit of Christmas has eluded you. Focus more on the reason for the season rather than the consequences to you personally. But whatever you do — do NOT buy her a gift certificate. That weasel move will definitely put you on the back porch looking in. And rightfully so.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
n winter, most songbirds are quiet. With no territories to defend or mates to woo, male songbirds greet the dawn in silence. Not so Carolina wren. This large russet-backed backyard skulker maintains both its territory and pair bond all winter so vocalizes its trademark “tea kettle, tea kettle, tea kettle,” song through out the winter months. Meandering through bushes or flipping leaves in search of insect larvae, wrens lead busy lives in winter when energy needs are high. Unless snow blankets the land, Carolina wrens are capable of surviving the winter unassisted, but an offering of suet cake is always welcome. Prolonged snow cover means many wrens starve. The wrens in our yard have taken to using our shed on cold winter nights, whose ill-fitting door offers easy access. Once, upon our return from a Christmas holiday in California, Linda and I opened the front door to discover that a Carolina wren had appropriated the wreath for a roost site. It led us on a merry chase that ended in an upstairs bedroom and the wren
being released outside. Carolina wren is not our only wintering wren. One tiny, nub-tailed wren, aptly named winter wren, thrives in Cape May by delving into downed logs, tree stumps and brush piles in wooded swamps. Easily recognized by it’s doubled jip-jip call, winter wren’s remarkably long, warbling and tinkling song is only uttered where they breed and that is not here. So until house wren returns in May, Cape May residents will have to contend themselves with the lusty song of the Carolina.
Northern cardinals and mockingbirds are also winter vocalists but these species don’t commonly become vocal before February, when lengthening hours of daylight trigger their territorial imperative. To attract these, and other, winter residents to your yard, try black-oil sunflower seed for cardinal, raisins for mockingbird. Remember to keep feeders away from glass windows and keep your cat indoors. Dr Daniel Clem, a leading authority on window strikes, estimates that 50% of all strikes result in fatality and multiple studies have been shown that cats are a leading cause of bird mortality. Carolina Wrens as ground foraging birds are particularly susceptible to cat predation. Heck, even our feeble-minded King Charles spaniel Mackenzie manages to catch one now and again, which she presents to us saliva-sodden and moderately masticated but otherwise unharmed. Hey Linda, time to put on the tea kettle, tea kettle, tea kettle, Mackie’s brought us another present. “Bad dog.”
