New Brews On The Block The new Gusto Brew Co opened last weekend on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. Renovations on the space began in May, but the dream — like a good beer — has been fermenting for a while. Husband-and-wife team Zack and Adriana Pashley (who both grew up on the Cape) are behind the new endeavor, which “isn’t just the next dancer up in the delightfully diverse conga line of craft breweries,” according to their site. “It’s an idea, it’s a feeling, and it’s a cross-section of our community’s unique taste and character...” Cheers!

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What does “Auld Lang Syne” mean? The name of the tune traditionally sung on New Year’s Eve, Auld Lang Syne translates to “times gone by.” It was written by 18th-century Scottish poet Robert Burns, who is celebrated at the raucous Exit Zero Burns Supper every January. It’s Saturday, January 26 — get your tickets before they sell out!

Local Landmark
Three days ago, the North Pole’s only A-list celeb, Santa Claus, was spotted in Cape May. Reportedly, he arrived in the wee hours of the morning. While he didn’t dine at any of our establishments, sources say he enjoyed locally made cookies.
Muskrats — adorable, semi-aquatic rodents — don’t store food for winter, meaning you might spot one out foraging for roots and stems around Cape May’s marshes. They breed late winter, with one female producing up to 50 young.
Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, founded by whalers in 1714 and located on Seashore Road, counts as part of its congregation a number of Mayflower descendants — this is among the largest concentrations anywhere. The current building, affectionately referred to as Old Brick, was erected in 1823 by Thomas Hughes, the businessman who built Congress Hall seven years prior. Bald eagles are a common sight on the church’s campus, a swatch of land 150 acres strong.

Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
friend of mine mentioned the other day that she’d attended way too many funerals this year. It definitely feels that way. Last week, the community lost Leonard Sachar, who passed away at his home on the island at the age of 87. Leonard practiced law in his home town of Plainfield, NJ and later served as a judge of the New Jersey Superior Court until his retirement in 2000. In Cape May, Leonard passionately pursued his photography hobby... I was always impressed by his work and at one time talked with him about publishing a book of his photographs. My condolences to the Sachar family. And I hope 2019 is a better one... we lost too many local luminaries this year. This is my last chance to remind you in print that the most fun event of the Cape May winter season is creeping up on us. Yes, the 15th annual Exit Zero Burns Supper is happening on Saturday, January 26. On that night, nearly 400 people will file into Convention Hall for what has
³
become one of the biggest celebrations of poet Robert Burns in the world. From humble beginnings at the Ugly Mug in 2005, we’ve grown and grown. By my research, only Calgary in Canada has a bigger Burns Supper than Cape May! There will be 385 people enjoying great Celtic music from Philadelphia’s John Byrne band, plus Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks band. The food will once again be catered by
our friends at the Washington Inn, who did a fabulous job last year. Meat lovers can feast on scotch egg and either shepherd’s pie or haggis, while veggies will be offered scotch broth and veggie haggis. For those wondering who the heck Robert Burns is... he’s the legendary 18th-century Scots poet who wrote Auld Lang Syne among many others. Count among his big fans Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson, who apparently based his smashhit song “Thriller” on a Burns poem, Tam o’Shanter. Amazing, right? Tickets for all that entertainment and food cost $45. Buy them online at ezstore. us, or call our store at 609-770-8479. The next issue of Exit Zero will be published February 7. In the meantime, we will be working on our Cool Cape May book and also doing some exciting renovations at the Filling Station. Renovations already? I can’t officially tell you why (yet), but, all being well, when we re-open in Friday, it will be pretty fun times here. In the meantime, Happy New Year!

Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Tom McKeefery from Carney’s is up. How long have you been bartending? Five years. Favorite drink to serve? A Polish sambuca shot because you have to set it on fire and inhale the fumes before shooting it. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers ask, “what’s your cheapest beer?” When they ask that, I know i’m not getting a good tip. Biggest tip? $300. Thanks Tom!
BEER OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Last Hurrah - ABV: 15.00% A massive and overly indulgent Imperial Stout, it’s for going out with a bang. Brewed with an immensely complex grain bill -- this is their most over-the-top and excessive beer brewed to date. Has aromas of chocolate and freshly roasted coffee.
WINE OF THE WEEK
Collier’s Liquor Store Gruet Brut Sparkling Wine - $16.99 Believe it or not it’s American from New Mexico of all places. Great quality for the price. Pffers bright, crisp acidity complimented by a touch of yeast on the delightfully long finish. A classic house style!
Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that bluefish are in season. Did you know that bluefish are called“marine piranhas” because of their aggressive feeding habits. Bluefish have been known to strike at anything! They also get a bad rep for tasting too fishy, so cook your fish within 24 hours of catching it!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
as remiss last week in not wishing you, all my weird, faithful readers, a Merry Christmas. So, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas! (And to my liberal friends, Enjoyable Cold Season). And to my Jewish readers, Happy Hanukkah! And to my African-American reader, Happy Kwanzaa! I am coming to you this week from the cozy confines of the gas attendant booth at Exit Zero Filling Station. Along with shifts in the restaurant and gift shop and delivering the mag, this is the fourth hat on my noggin this month. It’s not terribly difficult, if a little chilly, and I’m happy to help out wherever needed, but these receipts really need a gratuity option on them. I’m making, like, .000001%! Biggest fill-up so far? 33.511 gallons (around $100) in a pick-up truck that must be 60% gas tank. Smallest? $4 in a mid90s Lebaron. I can relate, bro. I can relate. (Fun note: I unwittingly tripped the burglar alarm Sunday morning. Nothing gets the heart going like a couple of police cars wheeling in while you’re still wiping the sleep
out of your eyes. But… I survived.) I’ve also completed week three of delivering Exit Zero magazine across Cape May and I think I’ve gained the locals’ trust. I am now able to move among them freely and have even started communicating with them. “How’s it going?” and “Have a good one” seem to elicit the most favorable responses, though one must be sure that the subject has ingested a suitable amount of caffeine before attempting such interactions. May I suggest a decaf mocha latte from Ostara’s on Park Boulevard? It’s quite, as the
locals say, yummy. Old Man Yells at Cloud of the Week: $250 for earbuds? I didn’t pay $250 for my first car. The $85 knock-off version will do just fine, . Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to hitch up my pants and chase some kids off my lawn. Had another excellent dinner at the Red Brick Ale House in North Cape May, our sixth or so since they rebranded. (The Bayshore was a great old place, but if those walls could talk, they would say, “Bleach.”) Sheri Hemingway, Jim Linnington and company have done a fantastic job reinvigorating the joint and crafting an interesting and varied menu. The margaritas are good, too. (Thank god Owen can drive now.) Kudos to all involved. Can’t wait to see the new sign. I’m told it will be visible from space! I’m not sure who Devin is from the deSatnick Real Estate Christmas party photo last week (I’m not only an Exit Zero writer, I’m an Exit Zero reader!), but, in that particular photo, she’s a dead ringer for Robin Scherbatsky, aka Robin Sparkles, aka Cobie Smulders from the imminently rewatchable

How I Met Your Mother, which I just finished for a third time. If you’re not streaming your entertainment by current year, you’re a big dummy. Cable is for old people. (Gas Station Side Note 1: Some gas caps are more challenging than others. Who knew?) (Gas Station Side Note 2: I see you, people backing into your parking spaces at the Filling Station. Big man! What, you think you’re better than me?) The thing in my ear has a thing in its ear. For those who have asked... yes, all those photos in and around EZFS from the 40s and 50s are absolutely authentic and taken right here in this building that opened August 1, 2018. I kid, of course. EZ chief Jack Wright spent 6,000 hours meticulously researching each photograph to pair best with our curry menu. I’d tell you more about the Filling Station, but I don’t want to bore you with that age old tale of “Man Leaves Successful Magazine Career In Scotland/London/New York Moves To New Jersey Starts Magazine Opens Indian Restaurant And Gas Station.” It’s been told a million times. I try to avoid getting too Comic Book Nerdy in here, but sometimes, well… Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a fantastic movie. The animation style takes a bit of getting used to (about five minutes), but what follows is possibly the best Spider-Man movie to date. Spider-Man 2 with Dock Ock holds a special place in my heart, and Tom Holland is a great Peter Parker let down by a not-great movie. Spider-Verse will entertain Silver Age geeks like me and your normie friends who don’t know Peter Parker from Peter Frampton. Before I run out of space I should tell you that TNT Acoustic (me and Tim Joyce) will be playing the 28th and 29th at Anglesea Pub in North Wildwood (that’s a town outside of Cape May, where life does exist), and The Brown Room at Congress Hall on the 30th. New
December 27, 2018 Year’s Eve Eve! And, in a bit of exciting news, the Seventh Annual Beatles Night, Cape May will now be encompassing three nights and two venues! MLK Sunday, January 20, Love Me Dudes will be playing at Carney’s for the first time, which we’re pretty excited about. Then, on President’s Day Sunday, February 17, we’ll be back at Cabanas. After that we’ll be playing a joint Cabanas/Carney’s show on St. Patrick’s Day Saturday, March 16, for the polar bear plunge. Rumor has it they may shut down that stretch of Beach Avenue for what will be a huge, outdoor party featuring Cape May’s BEST (and only) Beatles tribute band! We’d love, love, love to see you at any and all of these shows. Hell of a start to 2019. (FYI, my wife and boss, Cathrine, just made me make her a cup of coffee. Almond milk then Truvia then the coffee, in that order. Is this sexual harassment? It feels like sexual harassment.) And now, your Unapologetically Sappy Final Paragraph of the Year... as my return to the pages of Exit Zero this year was something of a lovely surprise, and because one never knows what the future may bring, I just want to thank everyone who re-embraced The Undertow in 2018. A lot has happened the last 39 weeks. Here at Undertow Central we’ve suffered some crippling losses, but among that loss came much objective good. There was also lots of stuff in the middle. In other words, life happened. And I was very pleased to be able to share it all with you. Your words of kindness and support, your good-natured ribbing, your reminders that many of you have “known” my children since before some of them were born, they all count, and they all mean a lot. They also help me remember why I moved here 25 years ago for the summer and never left. Thank you. ’Til next year, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have the greatest Christmas gift ever, for all of you. No, no, not another year of me as benevolent unofficial ruler, style guru and inappropriately affectionate uncle-figure: that comes as standard, and in fact is obligatory. And not a repeat of that time I bought every man, woman and child a bejeweled elephant. How was I to know that rather than being the “affectionate ex-circus elephants who adore doing tricks and taking people for rides” as the ad suggested, they were in fact vicious attack elephants liberated from Saddam’s palace. It was fortunate — if messy — that Ernie Hemingway was in town that weekend with his hunting rifle. I will not describe events in detail. Suffice to say that every house in our dear city received a complementary elephant’s foot umbrella stand and a set of ivory chess pieces. Nor will it be a replay of the year I gave each citizen a million pounds in cash. I had hoped that the result would be a trickledown of money to artisans and tradesmen as worthy citizens constructed museums, art galleries and sports fields. And possibly a statue of
myself. But no... instead, most of you added a ludicrous “games room” to your homes, featuring a pool table and a gauche mini-bar, and then purchased jet skis. The waters around Cape May sounded like an irritated wasp’s nest until I had Kitchener fetch our supply of salvaged torpedoes from that Nazi U-boat we sank. What a fun afternoon we had! This year I will give you Cape May. No, bear with me and put down the telephone you have on speed dial to the Bide-a-Wee Rest Home for Special Gentlemen in Stimpson
Lane. I mean, I am giving up my legal ownership of Cape May and will return it to you, the common masses. Normally that entails the formation of a trust of upstanding citizens and incorruptible public servants, but as we are in short supply of both, I have decided instead that the city will be split into equally sized and randomly assigned lots. We have called in the best minds (I asked Wally from the takeout, as he’s a whizz with the math) and calculated that you will each receive 2,450 square feet of land. That is a square measuring around 50 feet on a side. Once our supercomputer (purchased from the government in a fire sale in 1964 for $100) in the basement of the D’Catur Mansion has a few spare weeks to crunch the numbers, you will all be assigned your new land. And be compelled to live on it. Of course, that will mean some of you owning an entire narrow condo, while others will be restricted to a small patch of swamp, but I like to think it will bring out the best in you! I, of course ,will be immune as the Mansion is officially part of Liberia. More of that later.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, ringing in 2019!
elebrating the new year can feel like wishing yourself good morning at 4am when the alarm doesn’t go off until 6am. It can also be as luxurious as silencing the alarm and going back to sleep. Centuries ago, when many people were farmers, the farm calendar dictated the new year celebration in a logical, 6am kind of way. The Babylonians celebrated during barley-sowing season with the festive returning of borrowed farm equipment. Ancient India celebrated when the first crops were picked, and so barely had time for a big meal. Egyptians paraded a baby around when crops sprouted — and then went back to work. For farmers, spring is the busy season. You don’t see accountants scheduling big shindigs on April 14, do you? Perhaps that’s why the most celebratory New Year’s traditions evolved after Julius Caesar changed the calendar. Winter is a quieter time for hardworking farmers, so they could mark the new year at their leisure. Over the centuries there was time to concoct proverbs and traditions. Fill
your cupboards, pay your debts and kiss the person you want to keep kissing. Don’t do laundry or you will wash away your luck. Look for a south wind as an omen of growth. Eat 12 grapes at midnight, black-eyed peas, and pork. Or sauerkraut. Or cake. Wear red undergarments, or yellow; throw plates at your neighbors’ doors or break glass in the street; carry an empty suitcase around the block or burn effigies. Noisemaking to chase away evil spirits evolved from singing to bell ringing, gunshots, rock concerts and fireworks. Sea captains dropped balls into the
water to help mark time, and farmers eventually modified the tradition. In addition to the ball drop in New York’s Times Square, there’s an onion drop in Bermuda, an acorn drop in North Carolina, a orange drop in Miami and a potato drop in Idaho. Beach Plum Farm has its Egg Drop for New Year’s. Their sold-out event features a chef ’s dinner, a BYOB happy hour with farm fresh mixers, a hayride and a barn dance. At the Merion Inn, you can feed the kids before they drop, with kid-friendly seatings at 4:30 and 7, and a jazzy, grownup dinner at 9:30. For information and reservations, call 609884-8363 or visit merioninn.com. The Mad Batter offers dinner with live entertainment from 7pm to midnight. Call 609-884-5970. At Tisha’s on the Washington Street Mall, enjoy a la carte — call 609-884-9119. For a noisier night, consider Elaine’s for a rockin’ party and midnight buffet. The Boiler Room offers rockabilly, pizza and beer. Hemingway’s at the Grand offers a five-hour open bar, surf-and-turf and entertainment. Happy New Year!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Finally, my youngest daughter is engaged. She is 33 years old. Not that being single the rest of your life is a bad thing — but she has always wanted a husband and a family and, up until now, made bad choices. This time, we think Mr Right has come along. I want to throw them an engagement party New Year’s Eve. My husband says that’s too old school and makes people feel they must come up with present at a time of the year when they are already burdened with presentitis. He suggests a quiet family dinner. My daughter seems open to either. What would you do? — Happy Mom Dear Happy The Answer Lady thinks an engagement party on New Year’s Eve is a lovely idea, but it
Wise answers to perplexing questions
is awfully late to plan it. So, it would perhaps be family and good friends who have not already made plans. The best of both worlds. As to presents, your husband can relax. The old school onus is no longer the prevailing etiquette. Presents are not required — if someone does bring one. it should be a small token or sentimental gift. You might want to visit Patricia Jackson’s jewelry shop and find a lovely bracelet to commemorate the event. As to food, the Answer Lady suggests The Lobster House and Seaside Cheese Co. for
an elegant starter. Sunset Liquors, Collier’s or Joe Canal’s for champagne. Enjoy! Dear Answer Lady I’m stepping down from a job I’ve had for 20 years and am happy to be moving on to something else, but I don’t know what that “else” is and don’t quite know what to do with myself in the interim. What happens January 2 when the alarm goes off and I have no where to go? — Retired Dear Retired The Answer Lady is confident you will work it out. You need to give yourself the luxury of time to do so. Think about volunteering for one of the many nonprofits that Cape May is lucky to host. From the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities to the Nature Center of Cape May to the Bird Observatory of Cape May there is a lot to choose from. Remember, you are retiring from a job not making reservations in the retirement home. In the spring, think about a part-time job to give you a chance to see what you want to do going forward.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he Winter Solstice is behind us and the Northern Hemisphere is inclining degree by degree toward summer, still two seasons away. We who are attuned to the natural clock will be mindful of the many milestones that mark the passage of one season into the next. In January, the inlets will ring with the clamor of love-struck long-tailed ducks. Great horned owls will also be in full song, making the winter air vibrate with their deep, resonating hoot. On any warm day, you might see red bats cruising over sunwarmed roads as the sun sets. By February, the owls will be incubating eggs, along with bald eagles, our earliest breeders. And the first northbound migrants arrive — northern pintail, whose V-shaped flocks drive a wedge into winter. On warm nights in mid-February, expect woodcock to be courting. Any open field adjacent to woodlands serves as a launchpad for these hormonally fueled birds. Warm, windless evenings are best for listening. Higbee Beach and South Cape
May are traditional watch sites. By the end of February, pine warblers will be singing on Jakes Landing Road. The strong February sun should also get spring peepers going. In places, the conjoined voices of these tiny frogs is almost painful. Wood frogs will join the chorus about two weeks later. By the beginning of March, waterfowl of every stripe and hue are crowding freshwater ponds, rimmed with swamp maples, whose buds are beginning to flower. In
tidal marshes, the chirping notes of greenwinged teal approach the level of a din. Then one morning, you’ll wake to the sound of geese. Rushing into your yard you’ll see line after line of snow geese heading for breeding grounds in the Arctic. In April, the first neotropical songbird migrants arrive, as waves of northbound warblers, tanagers and orioles sweep over Cape May like a feathered tide. Whip-poor-wills and chuck-wills-widows appear in late April and early May, filling the night with their namesake calls and their cavernous mouths with moths. By the first week in May, horseshoe crabs will be gathering in the shallows off Delaware Bay beaches. When ruddy turnstones and red knot arrive, they will be laying down lines of lipid-rich eggs. By June 1, the ranks of northbound birds will thin. Another summer will have come to Cape May, just in time for the first southbound birds to arrive in the last week in June. Milestones, you can mark your calendar by them — ruddy or knot.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
RHEA is a 10 month old girl who was uprooted from her home and is a bit confused with her new surroundings. She is very energetic and loves to run in the yard and chase toys. Rhea needs a family that will continue her training. She has the potential to be a loving, wonderful companion and one that has a lot of love to give. Adopt!
BUSTER would be a terrific companion for almost anyone who loves dogs. He is a very happy and calm dog who is comfortable around other dogs, enjoys long walks, and loves to chase and play with toys. Buster does not belong in the shelter... he is too nice a dog to be overlooked. Give him the love he deserves and adopt today!
ODEN loves to play ball in the yard, take long walks and snuggle up for love and affection. Oden is a very special dog with good canine manners and we are determined to find his forever happiness with the right family. Unfortunately, Oden needs to live in a household as the only pet or his wilderness caretakers would be his forever family. Adopt!
The best read of the year! It starts with a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast of Cape May and develops into a story that will keep you turning the pages... Available from Whale’s Tale and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or you can buy a copy at the Exit Zero online store. Visit ezstore.us/books.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!
ANNIE is the classic, moody calico. You can’t blame her, she had a bad home life. One day, the people who she thought were her family just shoved Annie in a tiny carrier and brought her to the animal shelter. They pretended she wasn’t their cat, they said she was a stray! Annie would love to find a nice home, someone kind who will not abandon her!
BLONDIE can be a cranky, old cat at times. This doesn’t mean she wouldn’t appreciate a nice home. She had the good life for 12 years living in a small home with many other cats,. Then her owner passed away and the door to the house was locked. She was left outside to fend for herself until a neighbor picked her up and brought Blondie to the animal shelter.
