And The Oscar Goes To... It was a red carpet screening kind of evening at Elaine’s on Sunday. The Cape May Film Festival’s Annual Oscar Party featured prizes, trivia, hors d’oeuvre stations, wine tastings, a whole lot of movie chat and fashion trash talk (did you SEE that dress?) and even a life-sized sculpture of the Oscar statuette — a n(ice) touch. The proceeds of the evening benefitted the Young FilmMakers Camp. More photographs inside.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Why do we turn the clocks back and forward? It makes for longer evenings and saves on energy. Nearly half of the world now does it. Germany and Austria were the first countries, in 1916. BUT the town of Thunder Bay in Ontario actually got there first, in 1908.

Andy Reid, head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and former head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, stayed in Cape May in 2012. Two years later, it was Reid who made sure the Eagles drafted Nick Foles instead of the higher-rated Kirk Cousins.
Have you been to see the newest camel at the Cape May County Zoo yet? Walter, not even a year old, is an endangered Bactrian type, meaning he’s got two humps for storing fat when food is not available. And boy is he cute!
Historic Cold Spring Village is an open-air, living history museum that focuses on early 19th-century American life — aka, the age of homespun — particularly in south Jersey. Set on more than 30 acres and encompassing 27 restored buildings from across the county, this is the largest living history museum in the state. When you’re finished visiting with the site’s historical interpreters, check out the bakery, ice cream parlor, country store and brewery (yes, brewery!) on site.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — Jack and Diane got this one immediately. Answer is on page 18. A man was walking on the mall when it started to rain. He didn’t have an umbrella and wasn’t wearing a hat. His clothes got soaked, yet not a single hair on his head got wet. How could this happen?

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
etween March 23 and March 28, a sitcom pilot will be filming at The Abbey on Gurney Street and at its sister property, The Breakers on Ocean Street. It’s an idea that got its start last summer, when Page Cooper Anderson saw a storm rolling over Saint Pete’s Church in Cape May Point, where she’d recently been married. “I took a picture at this crazy angle of all these dark clouds over the building, and it looked like such a haunted church,” she told us. “I thought: I’m supposed to write a scary story. I turned to my husband and said, ‘Michael, do you realize? We’re at the end of the Garden State Parkway, Exit 0. There’s nowhere else to go. People come here to die!’ He was laughing at me, but I had a really good feeling about this and it percolated in my head for some time.” Page, who lives in New York but has a home in West Cape May, is a commercial actress you might recognize from her work in a Beano (it’s a dietary supplement) commercial. She’s also the owner of Table33
Productions in New York City, and she recently won Best Director in the London International Filmmakers Festival of World Cinema. For this project, armed with Craig McManus’s Ghosts of Cape May series, she researched all the haunted tales associated with Cape May, most of which she found heartbreaking. But then a writer friend who’s worked on shows such as The Golden Girls and All in the Family suggested she take her idea in a more comedic direction. Page

got to work on a screenplay about a family — some dead, some alive — who are stuck together in a house for various reasons. “Think Arrested Development meets Beetlejuice,” Paige said. The project has a lot of local support. If the film is picked up by Netflix or HBO, which is the hope, you’ll notice Magic Brain coffee mugs and Exit Zero magazines on set. One of the characters, Jane Dough (Dough! Get it?), is related to the RSK doughnut family. Behind the scenes, the crew — 33 of them — will have access to transport provided by Cape May Carts. We’ll be following Table33 Productions on Instagram for updates. Congratulations to West Cape May Elementary secretary Dorey Bryan, who has been nominated for the national LifeChanger of the Year award, an honor that recognizes teachers and school employees who exemplify excellence, positive influence and leadership. The grand prize is $10,000, to be shared with the nominating district. We’re rooting for you, Dorey!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Dan Oliver from the C-View is up. How long have you been bartending? 18 years. Favorite drink to make? It’s called the Summer Blast. Made with Stoli blueberry, blue curacao, lemonade, sprite and a splash of cranberry. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers snap their fingers to get your attention! (Yeah, we hate that, too.) Biggest tip you ever received? $300.
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Cape May Stout - ABV: 5% Full-bodied, rich, and roasty, this brew packs in the flavor thanks to a grain bill of pilsner, caramunich, roasted barley, oats and chocolate malts. Notes of chocolate-covered coffee beans permeate with a toffee and caramel-like sweetness.
Collier’s Liquor Store Redemption - $20.99 Dry Creek Zinfandel This delicious dry red showcases the typical briary, brambly, dark fruit that makes Dry Creek Valley famous. With aromas of blueberry, blackberry, vanilla and spice, this Zin is an absolute winner.
Seafood Report Ever wonder the best time is to eat an oyster or a crab? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. This week, after chatting with several local fishermen, we were informed that clams are in season. Did you know that shellfish are best in months with the letter R, as in September through April. very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Rio Station, a veritable hop, skip and a jump away, in Rio Grande (Route 9 is quicker than the Parkway, FYI). The vibe: It’s got the cozy, non-fussy feel of a family-owned, American steak and seafood house. No gimmicks! Unless you consider a regularly updated beer menu a gimmick... The server: Crystal Michener with the cool nails. The drinks: Surfer girl Katie went for a Kona Big Wave Golden Ale from Hawaii — perhaps she was anticipating the epic swell that would hit the Cape this past weekend. Jack decided he wasn’t going to drink... then decided he was going to have a Manhattan with Bulleit Bourbon. Twist his arm. Diane stuck to water, and Mike ordered a Purple Monkey Dishwater stout for the second week in a row. The food: There were mango habanero wings for the table that were supposed to be an “ouch” on the hotness scale — perhaps our spice tolerance has gotten a little *too* high, what with our collective Sriracha habit and all. Mike wasn’t feeling too well, so he ordered “something light,” a BLT... we like a world where bacon gets to be light! After much indecision, Katie opted for a pulled piggy sandwich with braised pork shoulder, JD BBQ, pickled purple cabbage and honey Sriracha aioli (we weren’t kidding about that Sriracha habit). Diane ordered a grilled cheese because winter can be long and hard and grey and grilled cheese helps. Jack went for the fiesta wrap with blackened chicken, black bean and corn salsa, cheddar cheese, grilled jalapeno, pico, lettuce and chili-lime sour cream. Delightful! The conversation: There was much discussion over what the uniforms at the new Exit Zero Filling Station will look like. Suspenders? Bow ties? Puffy sleeves and parachute pants? Only time will tell. Then we heard the harrowing story of how Katie’s tire sprung a leak on her recent trip back to Cape May after a weekend in the Poconos. After an hour-and-a-half, several offers of help from concerned citizens and a sort-of-shady-but-ultimately-successful trip to a car repair shop located in the back of a van, all was well. The takeaway: Sometimes, nothing but Rio Station will do.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
T
he time has come for eyeglasses. Or “spectacles” as the young ones seem to call them. It’s not that I “need” them, as such. But I am finding that in order to read the newspaper easily, I need to use the fake arms I took from Billy The Kid (The Kid had lost both arms in the annual “gran the cannonball before the fuse burns down” contest, and we’d had a new set crafted from ivory and silver). It’s not hard to slip my own (fully working, and rather splendidly muscled and manicured, I should add) forearms and hands into them, and hold the paper an extra two feet away. At which point I have Kitchener slip a powerful set of magnifying lenses we took from the old South Cape May lighthouse onto my head. Then I can see my own magnificent column in its full glory, laughing and shaking my head at my own genius. But it is not what you might call easy, and I am thinking that a set of those portable, lightweight lenses on a metal frame might be the answer. I could, of course, continue to insist that everyone I talk to shuffles back a
few feet, but that might be seen a little heavy handed. Plus, I think I might look rather dashing, as I thoughtfully slide the eyeglasses down the bridge of my handsome nose, in order to regard someone with intent and give the illusion that I am listening. Of course, Cape May is where the first ever “contact lens” was invented. We had received a batch of those odd-accented fellas in 1945, the blond ones who could build rockets, and one tinkered in his spare time, making all kinds of weird gadgets. Of course,
his “pocket-atom-bomb” we confiscated and threw into the ocean off The Point, setting the detonation timer to 100 years, as it was clearly a waste of his time and a fake, designed to alarm children. He then came up with a pair of polished diamond lenses that would, he said, let the wearer see perfectly. They were marvels, I have to say, but were each four inches across, giving the wearer the aspect of a fly, and when the first test subject looked up into the sky, said “I can see the heart of the sun!” and then shrieked as steam came out of his ears, we knew we should discontinue the project. So, every one for modern delights, I took myself off to a local peddler of eye lenses and had all kinds of hokum tests done. I ordered very specifically: frames made of solid gold, and an extra glass layer added to the front, that depicted eyes just like mine, set in an expression of rapt attention, so that I may nap and look at other, more interesting things in our fair city, when any of you are trying to talk to me for more than five seconds about your mundane lives.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, solve the mystery
E
veryone wants to be a hero. As kids, we pretended to save the world, copying characters from television, movies and books. Thanks to our imaginations and the 1970s television lineup, my Nancy Drew worked with my brother, the Incredible Hulk, and my sister, the Bionic Woman, to keep the world safe from bad guys. (You’re welcome.) We used the timer from a board game and set tasks — open the safe, defuse the bomb, repair the space ship — to outwit the villains. When we succeeded, we shared the credit — none of us was a supporting character. We all want top billing. No one wants to follow Wonder Woman across the battlefield or play Inspector Lestrade, who misses the important clue Sherlock Holmes uses to solve the case. Today’s kids idolize different heroes, but the idea is the same. We never outgrow the desire to be unstoppable. Nancy Drew would never let a locked room stop her, and Escape May lets you hone your sleuthing skills. Escape May is a “real life action adventure.” Players
work together to crack codes, spot clues and solve puzzles to “unlock” Old Man Albert’s library, Mrs Farley’s jewel-filled billiard room or Captain Kidd’s ship. You have 60 minutes. Escape May is located at Rio Grande Shopping Plaza, 1500 NJ-47. Reserve at escapemay.net and arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Admission is $27 per person or $250 for a private room. Rooms are wheelchair accessible, but the billiards room is a little tight. Or, pretend to solve a murder at a
Murder Mystery Weekend sponsored by the East Lynne theater Company. “Frank Smith,” a Philadelphia police detective, gets you started. Spend a weekend (March 9-10, March 23-24, April 6-7, or April 13-14) at the Henry Sawyer Inn, gather clues and solve the crime. The cost for two people starts at $499 plus tax. Reservations are made through The Henry Sawyer Inn by calling 609-884-5667. In April, mystery surrounds the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street. “An Evening To Die For” lets you explore what happens when a man convinces his wife to leave the country for a “lucrative business opportunity.” Travel plans change when someone drops dead. Interact with the cast of likely suspects and solve the mystery over a fourcourse dinner. Tickets are $55 for adults, $30 for children ages 3-12. Reservations are necessary — purchase tickets online at capemaymac.org, at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street, or at the Physick Estate. Next week: Plunge for St Patrick

T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My mother and my sister-in-law have put me in the middle of a family argument which has nothing to do with me. My sister-in-law has done everything she can to alienate my mother to the point of my mother threatening to cut my brother from the will and give me everything. I don’t want that. I also don’t want the fight which will be the result of this. BUT I am sympathetic. My sister-in-law is a psycho. It’s hard to shut up when she talks to my mother so contemptuously and to see my brother allow it. I have to walk out of the room. — Number One Son Dear Number One You may tell yourself this family feud has nothing to do with you, but it DOES. The best thing you can do is to take your mother and brother to brunch at the Blue Pig, without
Wise answers to perplexing questions
your sister-in-law. Try to find more and more moments like that to bolster your relationship, without any outside tension. Privately, encourage your mother to consult a lawyer about setting up trust funds or finding another way to resolve the inheritance issue, besides throwing you under the bus to deal with it after her demise. All of you should avoid the sister-in-law — her husband included. Dear Answer Lady My pedigree golden retriever got skunked right before his “date to mate.” I had to cancel
and fear this was a missed opportunity, plus I still don’t know what the best way is to deal with the deskunking. How do I get my golden boy back in the groove and do I send a gift in apology for the missed “date?” Is there a protocol for all of this? What if his “mate” finds another “date?” — Pedigreed Dear Pedigreed The Answer Lady’s dog guru Sandy McCullough says the best deskunking formula is one-quarter cup baking soda, a teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent, mixed into a quart of peroxide. We are also told that Swain’s Hardware sells a product called Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. And then there is the old mainstay — tomato juice/ soup poured all over that golden boy and then a nice shampoo. By the way — sooner rather than later on this issue, because whew! As to the jilted “mate” — a trip to Dog Days of Cape May’s bakery may be necessary. Nothing says, “I’m sorry” like treats. As to your fear that the skunk may have skunked his chances with his soul mate — another day, another time. And, if necessary, another mate.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
O
n average, I receive one email a day from people wanting me to identify a bird coming to their feeder. Today’s image was a male house finch, a species only slightly less common than apples in an orchard. The gentleman had certainly seen the bird before. The real question is: why wasn’t he motivated to learn the bird’s name before this? There are hundreds of guides, including basic ones that cover the birds of our region. My favorite is the Kaufmann Guide to the Birds of North America. Written with beginning birders in mind, the Kaufman guide is pocket-sized, intelligently organized and image-driven. It makes bird identification simple and save you the trouble of emailing me. Another favorite is Sibley Birds, which features the finest bird illustrations this side of the Pearly Gates. The comparative arrays that introduce each bird family is genius and makes bird groups as confusing as gulls and sparrows seem approach-
able by mere mortals. I rank it among the greatest human achievements of the 20th century. Right up there with cell phones, free checking, online dating and turning right on red. You can find all these guides and more at the Northwood Center 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. How can you stand to go through life not knowing the elements that give elevated meaning to this life? If you DO choose to go through life blissfully

unaware of the elements that surround you, sooner or later, Morte will solve the problem for you, in which case you may find Roger Tory Peterson’s Field Guide to the Angels and Saints (in progress) quite useful. The angels will be the radiant beings with wings. Saints are best distinguished by the diagnostic gold ring over their heads. If you happen to run into any beings dressed in red, shod in cloven hooves and carrying pitchforks, check the range map in your guide — you’ve strayed outside of the books range and you’ll probably find, too, that your cell phone can’t pick up a signal. At least the roaming fees won’t kill you. Too late for that. But while life still courses in your veins, don’t you want to learn more about the elements that make life worth living? You can start with house finch. Now only 9999 birds to go. The quest should take you the rest of your long natural life. As good a reason as any to start watching birds.

Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews some of his favorite short films
here were few surprises at the Oscars this year. And what you can always count on is the Cape May Film Society hosting a fabulous party. Veronica, Jerry, Elizabeth, Doreen, MC Will — wait, don’t pull me off the stage yet! You and a outstanding team of volunteers pulled together a wonderful event, right down to the real limo outside ready for our guests’ glam shots. And thanks to the Cape May glitterati who turned out in their red carpet finest to support the society and its Teen Film Camp. Elaine’s of Cape May generously provided the historic venue for this star-studded event. It was an evening of fun, film and fabulous food. Thank you to Shirley of Elaine’s for her warm hospitality and generosity. Now on to the movies. As is typical, it seemed most films walked away with something — a few went home empty-handed. This was a good year for fantasy films. The Shape of Water won Best Picture and Best Director. The film brings together sci-fi and romance into one nostalgic and clearly well-made film. It was good to hear
Frances McDormand took the Best Actress award Guillermo del Toro emphasizing his immigrant status. Also, one film came in with two significant wins: Blade Runner 2049 was a sequel that some say was much lighter and brighter than the original film more than 35 years old. It picked up two major awards for cinematography and visual effects. Staying with the fantasy films, Get Out won for original screenplay awarded to the first African American, Jordan Peele. Dunkirk may have surprised with three wins for exceptional
editing and sound work. What did surprise was probably the two major actor awards. One was for Gary Oldman. He has been at this a long time and this is his first Oscar. He had been nominated once before six years ago as lead actor for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was an exceptional filled with wonderful performances from a stellar ensemble cast. Frances McDormand won Best Actress award. This is her second award... she won nearly 20 years ago for her work in the Coen Brothers’ Fargo. In her acceptance comments, she asked all the women nominated to stand up and be recognized. Sam Rockwell, a favorite, also won for Best Supporting Actor from Three Billboards. A few notables: Coco won for best animation and best original song. Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway got a chance for a redo and this time announced the correct film for Best Picture. All in all this was a very inclusive award program. Hopefully this element is as predictable as the awardees every year.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
COOKIE is a young girl who is quiet in her kennel and watches as people go by. She lived with children as well as another dog and appreciates people that let her make her own pace at introductions. Cookie walks politely on a leash and takes treats calmly. She is looking for a family that will make her sad eyes light up again. Could this be you?
LUCKY is three years old and has been waiting at the shelter for over a year. She is very petite for her breed, but has a huge personality and tons of energy. Whether she is settling quietly in her kennel or showing off her favorite tricks, she loves meeting new people. Lucky is waiting for her very special someone to love forever. Adopt today!
LAYLA came to the shelter after living in an outside environment. As a result, she loves to interact with people at her own pace. Her previous owner had several children and said that Layla was comfortable with them. Layla has a soulful expression that begs for attention and care. She loves to romp in the yard and take long walks followed by cuddling.
The best read of the year! It starts with a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast of Cape May and develops into a story that will keep you turning the pages... Available from Whale’s Tale and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or you can buy a copy at the Exit Zero online store. Visit ezstore.us/books.
