All Squared Up At Congress Hall The Squares rocked the Ballroom Sunday night by taking the audience on a tour of the best of country music. From classics such as Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight” to romantic songs like Randy Travis’ “Somewhere in my Broken Heart” and some original tunes such as MQ Murphy’s hilarious “Country Song.” It was a toe-tapping, honkytonk good time had by all. The next Winter Concert will be held on March 25 and will feature The Clavicles.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Why do so many Irish people have red hair? It’s not as many as you think — a tenth of the population. Having said that, this statistic does make it the most red-haired nation in the world. Second behind Ireland is Scotland, with 6%. As for the reason? It’s complicated.

Eight years ago, Meghan Trainor, then Kelli Trainor, participated in Singer-Songwriter Cape May. At the time, she was a student at Berklee. Now, the 24-year-old is the Grammy Award-winning writer of “All About That Bass.”
Nice! National Geographic has named Cape May number two best birdwatching destination in the world — you’re in for a “feathered fashion show” here — behind only South Georgia Island (located east of Chile’s Cape Horn).
Lucky Bones Backwater Grille, launched in 2006, was the brainchild of the Craig family. At the time, their lease on The Pelican Club, an acclaimed fine dining establishment on the island’s beachfront, was up. They could have relaunched that concept somewhere new, but instead decided to go for a more casual vibe — and Lucky Bones was born. So what IS a lucky bone? That’s the hook-like claw of the horseshoe crab, worn by fishermen (and waitstaff) for good luck!
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — Jack proudly got this before Diane. Answer is on page 18. A man rides horseback into Cape May on Friday, stays for three days, then leaves on Friday. How did he do it?

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
am going to assume that Captain Samuel Ewing would have been pleased by the actions of the Borough of West Cape May in granting approval last week for the construction of a 22-room hotel. The plan is to add on to an existing home that overlooks Wilbraham Park, a building that Captain Ewing moved there from South Cape May in 1904 — an excellent idea since South Cape May was swallowed by the ocean after the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944. Captain Ewing was, apparently, an energetic entrepreneur. Among other things, he ran boats from Cape May to the Carribean; was the contractor hired to take apart Cape May’s Light of Asia, a large wooden elephant that compared to Lucy from Margate and which was the symbol of a failed real estate development in South Cape May in the 1890s; and owned the Shoreham Hotel in Cape May Point, which you know now as Saint Mary by-the-Sea, a nun’s summer retreat house. In 1904, he moved a Gothic Revival home to Wilbraham Park, making some tweaks to the details that transformed it into a Colonial
Revival, which was all the rage at the time. Around 10 years ago, the Borough of West Cape May changed its Master Plan, which inspired the home’s owners, Mark Lukas and Eddie Celata, to begin thinking about creating a hotel, a place that they wanted to be a lush, peaceful haven on the island, close to the beach but seemingly far from the hubbub. The plan is to incorporate a rooftop swimming pool (the plans look beautiful), along with a restaurant on the first floor of the existing building.
Mark, who has spent 30 years in the fashion business, much of it in Europe, told me, “We’ve visited magnificent country houses in Britain, chateaus in France, villas in Italy, and we plan to use that inspiration to create a place that combines classic period details with modern fittings. This project is allowing me to take all of my passions and experience and create something that’s beautiful and unifying.” Not surprisingly, some of the neighbors aren’t thrilled. After all, who would want an hotel to appear in their backyard. But places like Cape May (all places, really) would stagnate without the injection of visionary entrepreneurs. Without people like Captain Ewing or Thomas Hughes, who built Congress Hall, or Curtis Bashaw (who saved it) or Harry Hirsch, who built the Montreal Inn, or Nick Neza, who created the Miami-esque Ocean Club, or Harry Kulkowitz, who started the restaurant revolution with the Mad Batter, or Toby and Rona Craig, who continued it with the Washington Inn, this island would be a very different place. And not in a good way.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Stephen Augustine is up. How long have you been bartending? Fifteen years at Congress Hall. Favorite drink to make? A Bulleit Old Fashioned (shout out to Jack Wright). What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers make hand gestures when they want more snack mix. Biggest tip you ever received? Tickets to an Eagles game. Touchdown!
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Corrosion - ABV: 6.5% Opening with massive aromas of fresh citrus and tropical fruits, it hits with a firm hop presence accentuated by an upfront acidity. Kettle-soured before finishing as an IPA, it is uniquely balanced between the world of sours and the world of hops.
Sunset Liquors Sea Monster - $16.99 2015 Eclectic White Wine With exotic smells of lemongrass, honeydew melon, white flowers and tropical citrus notes. Tastes of tangerine and peach followed by marzipan and candied apricot. A sexy wine that pairs well with sushi.
Seafood Report Ever wonder the best time is to eat an oyster or a crab? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. This week, after chatting with several local fishermen, we were informed that striper is in season. Did you know that you cannot commercial fish for striper in New Jersey? It’s only for personal use.
Happy St. Patrick’s! Come Stock Up.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: The Ugly Mug on Washington Street Mall. The vibe: This is a super-caj pub. (That’s how the kids say “casual” these days, right?). The mugs: Suspended from the ceiling in a tradition dating back to the days of barbershop quartets, they belong to members of the Ugly Mug Club. The mugs of deceased members are positioned facing the ocean. The server: Patrick. Not only was this Philly native an efficient, friendly waiter, he had nachos for breakfast this day, so you know he’s our kind of guy. The drinks: A Modelo beer for Katie. A Honey Porter from Cape May Brew Co. for Jack. A Guinness for Mike. And water for Diane. (Not pregnant, just likes water). The music: Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You came on at one point (because doesn’t Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You ALWAYS come on at one point?). You know the song... it’s the one that goes: “I’m in love with the shape of you, We push and pull like a magnet do, Although my heart is falling too, In in love with your body.” Jack tells us he finds these lyrics offensive and objectifying, because “a person is so much more than her body.” That’s right, folks— we’re woke. The food: Jalopeno poppers to start, followed by a crab salad sandwich for Mike. “You eat like a baby girl,” Katie told him when he said he was pretty full about halfway through. (FWIW, Mike did finish nearly all his lunch, except for a little bit of crust.) For her lunch, Katie ordered a tasty lobster roll with fries (which she did NOT finish), and she ate all of Mike’s pickles. Jack had a chicken chipotle panini, and Diane ate a fruit and spinach salad. (Not on a diet, just likes salad.) The conversation: We talked about Mayer’s Tavern, Cape May’s legendary dive bar currently undergoing a major reno, and all of the urban tales surrounding it. Mike told the story about one of Mayer’s legendary fights involving two men, one of whom ended up on the floor with a foot on his neck, barking like a dog on command. We can neither confirm nor deny the identities of these men.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Trudy Rigolizzo, a retiree from West Cape May who was on her way home. So who would she most like to share this bucket with? Her husband. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
S
ensitive noses run in my family. I am dictating this as I stand atop the Mansion, sniffing the breeze and shouting my findings to my manservant, Kitchener, who is in the garden far below with a notepad. Kitchener carries this notepad wherever he goes, scribbling with a disposable pen. I originally assumed he was taking down my every thought, but one night, when he was sleeping, I happened to find the book left open where I could see it, right in the bottom of a locked drawer in his security box. “The buffoon enters from stage left,” one entry read, “loudly and vapidly announcing his every foolish thought.” Well, I was so excited that I woke Kitchener there and then, by pouring the contents of his water jug over his somnolent head. “My dear boy!” I shouted, “you are writing a marvelous fictional stage play, and didn’t tell me!?” I MUST have the part of that poltroon you describe! He’s a gem!” The rest is history: We ran for 308 nights at Cape May Stage, pulling record
crowds, who laughed from the moment I stepped on stage until way after my dramatic exit, chased by a pack of Yorkshire Terriers. Anyway, I digress. I smell things you can only imagine. On the distant breeze, the scent of the saltwater taffy ranch, where the coming year’s taffy bunnies are almost ready for harvest. The meat will be fed to Cape May’s Performing Bears (a company owned, run by and starring rescue bears — no humans are permitted
a say in their affairs, which makes for an interesting business plan), the fur spun into taffy and consumed by the gallon by credulous Shoebies. I also smell spring. I know some of you are still firmly in winter mode, but trust me... I can detect the aroma of hotels being spruced up — beds made, malevolent spirits exorcised, morose Lithuanian and Latvian teens invited to stand around looking beautiful and judgmental — tens of thousands of meaningless items of vaguely nautical tat being shipped to sell on to visitors with a sworn vow that should they hold the item to their ear, they will hear the ocean. I can smell the fear on the brow of those honored volunteers who will soon be put into baskets and f loated out to the current, to appease the kraken gods and ensure a good bathing season. And I can smell a whiff of oxygen, seeping from the cylinders we have at every street corner, that make visitors just a little giddy and prone to spend. I smell Cape May. I smell money.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the St. Paddy’s Day Plunge
S
t. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, but spend some time with my Irish aunts and you’ll hear more about Ireland’s other patron saint, St. Brigid. St. Patrick gets most of the press — he travelled around the Emerald Isle and spread Christianity to all the natives. St. Brigid established monasteries, convents and schools, and worked to feed the poor. Or, as Aunt Peggy used to tell it after a thimbleful of Jameson’s, Patrick wandered around socializing while Brigid did all the work. History is a little fuzzy, but St. Brigid (453-523) may have been the daughter of a slave woman. Brigid served her father/ owner as a dairymaid. She helped the farm to flourish, but often clashed with her father because she gave the milk to the poor. Although she was a beautiful woman, she prayed to be “relieved” of her beauty so she could become a nun. Legend holds that St. Patrick was present for her vows and declared her “destined for great things.” Brigid established her first convent at age 15 and managed so well that the bishops
encouraged her to create convents all over Ireland. A stickler for efficiency, Brigid established the first “double monastery,” for both monks and nuns. Warriors claimed that a cloth dipped in one of her wells could heal their wounds, and wells dedicated to St. Brigid are still found all over Ireland. St. Brigid also knew the value of a good beer, if only as a source of nourishment for the poor. At a leper colony, she transformed bathwater to beer and ”dealt it out to the thirsty in plenty.” Faced with a shortage of beer at the
end of Lent, she made one barrel serve the faithful of 18 churches. Surely she would approve of raising a glass to her friend Patrick while helping a good cause. Carney’s answers Brigid’s call for generosity with the St. Paddy’s Day Plunge —in the frigid ocean. It’s a fundraiser for Family Promise, a sheltering program for families with children. Registration is $50 for the plunge and accompanying 5k Run, or $25 for the plunge OR the 5k. There are discounts for children under 14 and local students. The festivities begin on Friday, March 16, with live music and the crowning of the Plunge King and Queen. On Saturday morning at 9, there’s a free Kegs and Eggs breakfast for participants. The 5k run (and 1-mile walk) begin at 11 at Convention Hall, and the polar plunge begins at noon on the beach between Jackson and Decatur. After you dry off, it’s back to Carney’s for more music all day long. They want to see you “freeze your shamrocks off ” for a good cause. For information and registration, visit carneysnj.com.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am organizing a lunch for about eight women who worked with me on a fundraiser for our church but I am thinking of not inviting one because I fear she will ruin the lunch. She talks about herself obsessively and constantly draws the conversation to center around herself. She never shows any interest in others and on top of it she’s a low talker, which makes everyone stop and listen to her. And does she have anything of substance to say? No. It’s all dribble. My question is — can I disinvite her? Or schedule the lunch and “forget” to tell her? — Church Lady Dear Church Lady You know perfectly well you cannot disinvite, nor ignore this woman, whom you admit helped you with a fundraiser, as did the other ladies. Suck it up. It’s a lunch not a
Wise answers to perplexing questions
marriage proposal. Get a large table at Fins, for example, and make sure you seat her at one end; you at the other. “Low talkers” cannot dominate a table and as the organizer of the lunch, it falls on you to steer conversation along. People are people and sometimes they get on our nerves, but it sounds as though this woman helped you achieve a common goal and should not be ostracized. As a church lady, you already know this. Dear Answer Lady I work with a woman that I have become
fond of. We seem to get along well and I know she is available — she and her fiancé broke it off in the fall. I would love to ask her out, but every time I go to ask her, I get cold feet. I’m not that smooth with women, as you can tell. I wonder if you have any advice that will help me change my personality. — Awkward Dear Awkward You absolutely do not need a personality change. You do need a confidence builder. Baby steps. One morning tell her you are going over to Coffee Tyme for coffee and a sweet roll. Offer to bring her something, hopefully without having to include the entire workplace. The coffee run will be barometer. If it goes well, ask her if she’d care to go to George’s for lunch. If that makes you too nervous, ask a mate or two to join you. Step three; tell her you and a couple of friends are going to Oyster Bay for Friday happy hour. And make sure you do go with some friends. You don’t want her to feel like it’s a setup. After all that, believe The Answer Lady when she tells you, she’ll let you know if it’s a go/ no-go.

Bird Droppings
C
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ome March and bird watchers are counting down the species until spring. By the time this column goes to print, pine warblers will be singing at Jakes’s Landing, laughing gulls will be following the ferry, and osprey will be winging their way north, their arrival timed for St. Patty’s Day. It’s a long way from the Amazon Basin to Cape May and the perils are many, but these are professional birds. Their internal clocks are ticking down until they return to the nest they occupied last year. The arrival of osprey in Cape May signals the beginning of the fishing season. In years of plenty, osprey can raise three fledgings. If fish numbers are low or bad weather makes the water too murky for fishing, osprey may fail to raise even one. But on the whole, fish numbers are more than adequate to support large broods. Bald eagle, who likewise raise one to three young per season, are also eager to see osprey return. Nesting already, eagles are largely dependent upon osprey for food.
Where osprey can plunge beneath the water in pursuit of fish, bald eagles can only pluck fish from the surface or steal fish from a successful osprey. Osprey feathers are uncommonly greasy, their waterproofing produced by an unusually large uropygial gland located near the base of the tail whose waxy oil is applied with care as birds preen. I have often wondered if the waxed cotton jackets favored by British birders and gentry was not inspired by the osprey’s waterproofing
technique. While cosmopolitan in distribution, osprey reach their greatest breeding density along the Atlantic seaboard of North America with the waters of Delaware Bay being particularly favored, a testimony to the health of the aquatic environment and the availability of trees and artificial platforms sturdy enough to support ssprey’s large stick nests, which are then lined with grass and other cushioning material including (sadly) tangles of discarded monofilament fishing line in which young osprey may become entangled, causing injury or death. So fishermen, when stripping line off your reels, please burn it or discard properly. Beach strollers, if you come across some tangle of line, take it with you. But be aware that a lure or barbed hook will probably be attached. Some young osprey may benefit from your thoughtfulness and the gulls will thank you. Insatiably curious, gulls will pick at anything and wrapped around a wing, monofilament line can cut right down to the bone, rendering birds flightless.

The Movie Column
T
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Black Panther”
his column prides itself on bringing you the quirky, hard-to-find films that you may not see at local theaters. This is not one of those times. Black Panther is the latest Marvel Studios production that seems to be filling the theaters to overflowing. T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman) is the King of Wakanda, a nation in extremely remote regions of the African continent. It is cloaked and invisible to the rest of the world. Wakanda is a land of plenty and the most powerful kingdom in the world because of its rich deposits of vibranium, the strongest material known to exist. In the beginning, we are caught up with the back story of T’Challa’s father (the former King T’Chaka, played by John Kani) being killed... a storyline from the 2016 film Captain America Civil War. T’Challa is challenged for the throne in a duel he handily wins. T’Challa wears the Black Panther vibranium suit to defeat bad guys in ultimately an a attempt to keep the precious material from falling into the wrong hands. This is one of the criticisms of Wakanda, that it remains
Black Panther... a winner all-round hidden from the world and does not help others with its superpowers. This argument is made even more pronounced by an outsider, a native of Wakanda who has been in exile from his home land for many years. He is a staunch critic of the powerful nation for allowing suffering in the world when there was so much good that could have been done over the years. The social commentary in this film is as poignant as the special effects are brilliant. The action drives the film and overarching
themes provide the depth necessary to make it a hit all the way around. One of the more significant parts of the cast is the kick-ass, all-female guard to the king. This is a different take on secret service. These fierce fighters demonstrate undying loyalty to their beloved leader — and they are expertly treated in the story for the genuine warriors they are. So if you haven’t felt like pushing through the crowds to see this one, wait for the lines to die down a little and make a plan. Black Panther has the agility to commandeer racial divides like its hero skillfully masters a fight sequence. In the end, maybe a better planet can be the benefit. We look forward to seeing you at the 2018 Cape May Film Festival, April 6-8 at the West Cape May Borough Hall. We will feature the best new short films being created in or for New Jersey. We also have special guests and films never screened here! Visit www.newNJstatefilmfestival.com for details.
