The second annual St Paddy’s Day Polar Plunge was all the buzz Saturday morning with 120 brave souls running into the icy 40 degree ocean while around 350-400 less brave souls watched from the shore. It’s all to benefit Cape May County’s local charity, Family Promise. Before the plunge took place, Carney’s hosted a Kegs and Eggs complimentary breakfast for the participants, followed by a 5k run and onemile family walk. And there was more... two bands rocked Carney’s main room from early afternoon until the wee hours of the night.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What’s a cool piece of spring trivia? There’s a growing movement to call the spring equinox the March equinox in order to avoid what’s called Northern Hemisphere Bias. In the Southern Hemisphere, spring lasts from August to November.

Urban legend has it that Harry Kulkowitz won the Carroll Villa on Jackson Street in a poker game. Truth is, he fell in love with the place during a poker game, and came back with a bank loan to buy it. In 1976, he opened the Mad Batter, a catalyst for the city’s food revolution. In 2014, President Obama honored Harry on the 70th anniversary of D-Day for lying about his age in order to enlist. Today, Harry’s son Mark, Mark’s wife Pam and their children run the restaurant and hotel.

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ape May, are you ready to rock? (And sway and tap your feet and chill out, too?) Reason I ask is this coming weekend is one of my favorites on the calendar. It’s the 11th annual SingerSongwriter Cape May, which means around 150 acts from all over the country will converge on our little town and perform for our musical delectation. Once again, we’re set to be plagued by rotten weather. I’ve been involved with this wonderful event since the first year and I cannot remember a single weekend where it wasn’t raining, snowing and/or frigid. But that’s all the more reason for planning yourself a weekend of music at SIXTEEN (count ’em!) different venues, ranging from Carney’s and Cabanas to Corinthian Yacht Club and Congress Hall. There will be a huge amount of musical diversity and I can’t offer too much in the way of guidance because listening to a couple hundred YouTube videos wasn’t an option... BUT I can tell you I’m heading for The Boiler Room on Friday night after listening to sev-
Kennedys, both based in New York. Dan had a gruesome leadup to the event, severing all four fingertips of his left hand in a snowblowing accident at his upstate home a week ago. Kudos to Dan... he’s still coming to Cape May, although someone else will be playing the guitar, for obvious reasons. Hopefully, he’s able to eventually resume guitar-playing. Staying on the musical front, it’s only a few weeks before another musical tour de force comes to town. That’s the Exit Zero Jazz Festival on April 20-22. Among the highlights are acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti, who’s had four Grammy nominations and one win (for Best Pop Instrumental Album in 2013); piano wunderkind Joey Alexander, who will sell out the house again; and Memphis legend William Bell (who wrote the lyrics to the iconic “Born Under A Bad Sign.” For information on tickets and venues, visit exit0jazzfest.com or call 609-849-9202. Please note that we do NOT sell tickets or organize the event. We’re sponsors... it’s Michael Kline who works all the magic.
³ eral songs from AfroBear. This four-strong band from West Chester are sexy, smooth and mix it up with a few different vocal styles and compelling hooks. The EZ crew were instant fans. Can’t wait to see them. The band with the longest name at the event also sound like a must-see. Jake Tavill & the Indigo Child Blues Band, from New York, are playing 501 Beach (that’s the basement of the Marquis de Lafayette) on Friday night and Cabanas on Saturday night. The headliners are Dan Bern and The

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Jenna Monastra from the Cape May VFW is up. How long have you been bartending? Ten years plus. Favorite drink to make? A green tea shot. Because that’s what we are known for. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers get mad when you ask for their ID. Biggest tip you ever received? A man sat at my bar and that man is now my husband. So meeting my husband was the best tip I ever received. How sweet!
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Ebb Tide Creamcicle IPA A new-school IPA brewed with massive amounts of Citra, Mandarina Bavaria, and Amarillo hops, then smoothed out with lactose and vanilla for a sweet finish, Ebb Tide is particularly brewed for the warmer days ahead.
Collier’s Liquor Store Acacia Winery Lake - $16.99 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir This dense Pinot is an excellent expression of the terroir of Carneros. With hints of cherry, vanilla, and spice this wine will compliment many lighter style dishes.
Seafood Report Ever wonder the best time is to eat an oyster or a crab? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. This week, after chatting with several local fishermen, we were told that flounder is the fish of the week. Did you know that a flounder is a carnivore and its diet is based on fish, shrimps and crabs?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Dog Tooth Bar and Grill in Wildwood. This is a casual, surf-inspired pub, brought to you by the folks behind Poppies Brick Oven Pizza and Kitchen, and the soon-to-open MudHen Brewing Co. The menu is part Asian, part Mexican, part American. The food: Trigger warning for health nuts... we went for fried. Like, really fried. We’re talking a starter of green bean fries, buffalo chicken cheeseteak egg rolls, buffalo wings AND volcano shrimp in a spicy “lava” sauce. Then, for entrées, we all shared a jalapeno burger with fries, plus a chilean seabass dish over a bed of rice with Andouille sausage. Then we... well, we don’t remember much else because of the respective food comas. The conversation: The night started out like an episode of Fashion Police with Joan Rivers, with Felicia criticizing her own khaki pants, which she wore straight from work as athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Training Center. (Do you have an opinion on whether khakis are still cool? Tweet us @exitzeromag!) Then Felicia gave us some advice (squat jumps!) for healing the sports-related injuries in our group. Jack promptly demonstrated said squat jumps — in the middle of the restaurant. Apologies to the food runner who nearly became a casualty. The (slightly tipsy) conversation: Oyster farming. How does it work and why don’t farmed oysters carry the same stigma as other farmed seafood? Glad you asked! It’s because, although these oysters often start as spawn at a hatchery, they’re actually raised in the wild, where they feed only on natural, er, bay stuff. (Hey, that’s the best we can do after a few drinks. Speaking of...) The drinks: Felicia ordered a vodka club. Diane and Katie had the spicy mule. Jack went for a Bulleit Manhattan — up — in a rocks glass (so predictable). There was also a Fly Like an Eagle thrown into the mix — vodka, blue curacao, pineapple and lime juice. It did look green! The sign of spring: There were renovations happening on the outdoor patio at Dog Tooth while we were there. Power tools never sounded so sweet. Bring. It. On.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Trudy Rigolizzo, a retiree from West Cape May who was on her way home. So who would she most like to share this bucket with? Her husband. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
was dismayed but not surprised to read in my morning news clippings (my staff use scissors to select, snip and finally present the best of the morning newspapers in a leather-bound book that I can digest over my boiled eggs and toast soldiers. They insist that there is this new thing called The Google that will do this for me on my ludicrously large new cell phone, but I trust it not) that a self-driving charabanc has struck and killed a pedestrian. Now, you know my thoughts on Thinking Machines: they should all be smashed with clubs and destroyed with fire. Ideally with their inventors locked inside them. And you know my view of cars: they are an expression of a man and his freedom. Freedom to pick a course in life, to stop on a whim, to feel the wind in your hair. And to crash into anything that annoys you or cannot get out of the way. But that was the OLD days in driving, right after we dispensed with the fellows with flags walking ahead, and just before every man jack purchased an automobile. In those days the highways were smooth, new and
sparsely populated. In fact it was such a rarity to pass another car that both would slow, and the drivers shake one another by the hand, before tooting their impressive horns by hand (that is no euphemism) and carrying on. Now, the roads are holed, patched and crumbling like some dreadful postapocalyptic stage play like that one I saw on the televisual device not so long ago: Mad Maximilian, possibly. And they are plagued by terrible drivers at the wheel of ugly, boring cars. And vice-versa.
So it is with some sadness that I throw my weight behind the movement to self-driving vehicles. Obviously, it would be best if they did not mow people down, at least without first determining that they were from out of town. But really, given some 50,000 Americans are killed or injured on the roads annually, I think we can allow the machines the latitude to dispose of a few thousand, don’t you? I for one would relish the chance to sit in the back of a new electric robot-driven vehicle, perhaps reading a book, or having a manicure, or even in the bath, so long we we didn’t corner too fast, or go over the bridge out of town. Of course we would need to ensure the robots did not simply drive us to a cliff and open the doors, then take over the world, so we would have a stout stick mounted close to hand, with which to strike the robot on the head should it be tricksy and show signs of true sentience and a wish to commit genocide. Much the same as I do when taking a trip to Wildwood, and entrusting myself to a local driver, it must be said.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, scavenger hunting
H
umans are seekers. In spite of the ease of our modern lives, our brains still excel at spotting things we need. Anecdotal evidence argues against this — struggle to find your water on the bedside table or the ketchup in the refrigerator and you may have doubts — but science says we are good hunters. Our brains like a challenge. Perhaps that’s why we still enjoy scavenger hunts. Scavenger hunts are treasure hunts for things nobody wants. You try to find the items your host requests — a coat hanger, a ticket stub and a maple leaf, for example — without spending any money. Modern versions may involve selfies with a firefighter, a dog and a mannequin. You could call Pokemon Go a scavenger hunt. In the early 1920s, a party hostess named Elsa Maxwell popularized scavenger hunts, asking her guests to find items ranging from the “red pom-pom on a French seaman’s hat” to “mustache hairs from Kermit Roosevelt” to goats and street signs. Her gatherings mixed people from all classes and fields.
Composers played cards with politicians. Einstein played the violin. Jimmy Durante contributed his shoe to a scavenging team. Maxwell had such a knack for attracting interesting people that the Waldorf-Astoria gave her a suite rent-free, predicting that guests would enjoy seeing Maxwell’s celebrity friends strolling through the lobby. Eleanor Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe, Maria Callas, Cole Porter, Winston Churchill and others enjoyed her hospitality, perhaps because of her insistence that party
goers contribute to the success of a party. “Bores are the vacuum cleaners of society,” she cautioned. Play along in Cape May with a family scavenger hunt from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. For $5, pick up a packet at the Physick Estate or the Washington Mall Information Booth and hunt for architectural elements around town; or choose to search the Physick grounds to answer questions about life in Victorian times. Or, head over to Congress Hall, where guests will solve puzzles and follow clues to find the missing Taffy Box. Tickets are $10 per person. Call 609-884-6542 to reserve your place — 11am and 1pm on April 11, 13, 15 and 17. Visit caperesorts.com for more information. And, this time of year, you can also hunt for Easter eggs. Join the Kiwanis Club Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31, at 10:00am at Cape May City Elementary School. This event is free for children up to eight years old and features a celebrity guest — the Easter Bunny.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am working with a close friend on a project and need to be in touch with my cochair. But she and her husband do not believe in cell phones. I’m forced to call their landline when I need to talk to her and that means her husband is more apt to answer it. Her husband is unbelievably volatile. Last week I called and before I could even say, “Hello,” he barked into the phone, “What do you want? I’m cooking here.” I paused. He hung up. Later, he called and asked if I wanted something. He’s a bully and he gets away with it because people like me never say anything. On the other hand, I don’t want to jeopardize my friendship with his wife. —Berated Dear Berated Having a friendship does not mean you become a doormat for rude behavior. The
Wise answers to perplexing questions
next time it happens — and there will be a next time — simply tell him in a calm matter that you do not appreciate being spoken to in that manner. Stand your ground but do not lose your temper. Think of him like a child who is in the throes of a temper tantrum. As to your friend, she’ll have to decide herself how to handle the situation. That really cannot be your concern. In the meantime, you need a café mocha at Coffee Tyme and a sweet roll. Dear Answer Lady I stupidly hired my friend’s daughter at
her mother’s urging and now find I may have to let her go. She is never on time. She works well enough when she does come to work but there is always drama and attitude. Her boyfriend is dumping her. She’s losing her house. It goes on and on. However, I feel an obligation to her mother. I have to admit I’ve been putting the inevitable off. Do you think I should give her a second chance? — Procrastinating Dear Procrastinating It is the Answer Lady’s experience that parents who act as agents for their kids never produce good employees. They also are under the impression that they won’t be fired. You are doing her no favors by ignoring bad behavior, but more importantly, you are hurting your business. Let her go as soon as it is convenient for you. And do so without consulting your friend lest she tries to talk you out of it. Once the deed is done, then you should pick up the phone, give her a heads up and invite her to breakfast at The Blue Pig Tavern. If it ends the friendship, how good was it?

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
e recently hosted our quarterly Associate Naturalist’s meeting in Goshen. On the agenda was the spring program agenda — the suite of CMBO daily walks and program offerings. Approximately 30 naturalists were in attendance to get their marching orders, catch up 0n winter estranged lives and enjoy a dose of lore relating to golden eagle migration. It’s this quarterly injection of cutting edge insight that the naturalists pass on to walk attendees and what keeps CMBO programing fresh, poignant and engaging, season after season. What struck me was not the enthusiasm but the level of commitment these volunteers bring. When CMBO was founded in 1976, a cadre of teacher/naturalists dedicated to the task of dispensing natural lore to Cape May residents and visitors was unthinkable. Back then there were only five birders/naturalists living in the county. It was Pat Sutton who recognized the potential of harnessing the tutorial skills
of Cape May’s growing naturalist community, drawing from the ranks of retirees whose passion for birds guided them here. Bird watching is an avocation that appeals to a broad spectrum and welcomes people regardless of race, sex, creed, age or belt size. And those new to birding need not worry about their lack of experience. The only thing better than being an experienced birder is being a new birder because a whole world of discovery and wonder await. CMBO’s walks vary in length and phys-
ical challenge but all are leisurely paced. My favorite is Monday mornings in South Cape May — “my walk.” But I flatter myself. It is common for up to 10 Associate Naturalists to turn out for this popular one-and-a-half mile exploration of one of the planet’s premier birding hotspots. To learn about birding trips and CMBO program options go to birdcapemay.org. Or stop by the Northwood Center, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point and pick up a schedule of events and free Cape May Bird Checklist. And don’t forget — the 23rd annual Optics Sale is on April 14 and 15. Meet company reps and enjoy unheard-of discounts on new, used and factory refurbished instruments. Maybe you already own binoculars. But if your instruments are more than 15 years old, you are cheating yourself every time you bring them to your eyes. Yes today’s optics are that much better. Come before the sale and test drive some of the alpha birding binoculars that are setting the bar today.

By Stefan Prosky, Curator of Cape May Film Festival
he 18th Annual Cape May Film Festival is April 6-8, just a few weeks away. We can get used to this new time slot. Let’s face it, it’s warmer than November (when we used to host this festival). Okay, maybe there’s still a chill in the air, but we’re getting closer to warmer weather. This year, we’ve got a fantastic lineup of films made in New Jersey or being shown for the first time here in South Jersey. Either way, welcome to the one festival that has been impressing audiences for nearly two decades. We know you’ll this year’s lineup as much as we did getting these films together! Everything starts Friday night, April 7. We will then screen Chasing Coral, the award-winning documentary by the creators of Chasing Ice. This film has been critically acclaimed globally for its cinematography as well as its message. In advance of that we will screen The Things They Left Behind from film camp instructor Sarah Werner. A year after 9/11, a pair of red glasses and other things lost on that horrific day haunt a World
Trade Center worker who suffers from severe survivor’s guilt. This is a remarkable film based on a Stephen King story. On Saturday at 10:30am, we kick of our Young Filmmakers Short Selection. Movies include Outside, In, a film from the 2017 Teen Film Camp. The slings and arrors of outragious fortune… internalized… hurt. Next director Roberto Steele (a local whose name you’ll find familiar as his father was a member of the film camp faculty for many years) presents B-Ball Star. Saturday continues with a host of films including: Legends of Free Flight: A film dedicated to
a few of the many Flying Aces Club Legends. The Tunnel: He gets by with routines and exercise, but as time goes on he’s more and more curious — is there anything outside of this world? Eggs and Soldiers: A single man’s older son risks everything to get his younger brother a real Irish Christmas. Thurman Comes Home: A homeless man reflects upon his life when he is unexpectedly met by an old mentor. Monolith: A documentary about painter Gwyneth Leech’s solution to a new building blocking her studio’s view of Manahatan. We have invited Temple University’s film school to join us again this year for a seletion from their Diamond Select Film Festival. On Saturday night, meet Anthony Bregman, producer of the Jim Carrey film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and other movies. On Sunday, the documentaries continue including the New Jersey story of a couple of pizza entrepreneurs! Don’t miss out. Learn more at www.newnjstatefilmfestival.com.

Dino may be shy at first, but will warm up quick when he knows you won’t make fun of his size. He loves other cats and laying in the sunlight. Please come and meet Dino at the shelter, he is eagerly waiting for you!
MERLOT is like a fine wine. There’s no better way to end your day then with Merlot. Testing positive for FIV doesn’t slow him down. He’s in great health and in great spirits. So if you’re looking for a long-haired cutie to spend your hours with, then curl up with some Merlot. He’s patiently waiting to meet his new family and cozy home.
ELLA is a black and white long hair mix who is looking for an older companion such as herself. Someone who likes long talks, is affectionate and will be able to pet and brush Ella for hours while she sleeps in your lap. If you’re looking for a cuddly friend, then Ella is the perfect match for you. Don’t waste any more time, stop by the shelter and adopt!
