A Sing-Song Kind Of Weekend For two days and two nights, our quaint beach town hosted a live music festival that attracted performers from all over the country. Around 150 acts and artists (along with 60 music industry professionals) participated in Singer-Songwriter Cape May. Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom was the main venue for the keynote performances while 15 local restaurants and bars in town hosted the remaining acts. It was a rocking good time.

AGENT CORNER: Stacy Hutchinson moved from Norman, Oklahoma to Cape May, New Jersey in 2004. The experience of buying and selling several homes across the country piqued her initial interest in real estate. With her personal experience and the desire to help individuals and families find the perfect home, she acquired her real estate license in 2012. By coupling her 15-year customer service industry experience with her ability to prioritize the demands of being a working mom, Stacy has learned that real estate is a people business. She believes that success depends not solely on expertise and skill, but more importantly interpersonal relationships. Her goal is to bring her customers complete Stacy Hutchinson satisfaction in their investment from the initial search to the final Broker Associate Cell: 609.972.6004 purchase. When not busy helping Cape May area buyers and sellers with real estate, you will find Stacy rooting for her six children in their various activities, walking the Cape May Promenade, or camping out on the beach until dusk, enjoying the sun and surf with her family and friends. The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. How many jelly beans are consumed during the Easter holiday? More than 16 billion in the US, or enough to circle the globe three times. We also eat 90 million chocolate bunnies and 90 billion — with a B — eggs. For peeps sake!

In 2012, country star Kenny Chesney played a sold-out show on Wildwood beach. But he did some of the promo filming at David Douglass Memorial Park. As Kenny would say, “Just trying to be a rebel in a small town.”

Thank you, Nature Center of Cape May for reminding us: This spring, we need to check our lawns for bunny nests before mowing! Trick: Put a wheelbarrow over a nest to keep dogs away. Just make sure a momma bunny can still slip through.

Cape May harbor, 105 years old, came to be when a power broker from Pittsburgh named William Flinn dredged 500 marshy acres, with the intention of using the spoils to develop East Cape May. The development project was DOA, but the harbor proved invaluable. During both world wars, it provided much-needed access to the Delaware Bay for our troops. Today, it’s home base for the second most lucrative commercial fishing port on the eastern seaboard.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — You walk across the Cape May bridge and you see a boat full of people, yet there isn’t a single person on board. How is that possible? Answer is on page 18. (Once again, Jack got the riddle in less than 30 seconds. As did Diane... let’s see how you fare!

Ramblings From The Editor

Y

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ou only have to spend a few minutes on Facebook to realize that a lot of people have a lot of opinions about this little place on earth. For instance, there are people who think that the sidewalk being built by the bay in Town Bank is a sign that the apocalypse is upon us, while others love the fact that walking by the beach just got more convenient (and arguably safer). Here in Cape May, you’ll find many people who love the new Rotary Park, while others are still bemoaning the fact that the old bandstand was demolished — they’re sad because they were married, or proposed to, there and don’t seem to care that it was rotting. So, yes, lots of opinions, and often expressed in ways that make you wonder about the state of the universe. However... there is a forum coming up where you are being invited to come and give your views on the future of Cape May. For those of you who like to hide behind the relative anonymity of social media... you should stay at home and continue to

carp via your keyboard. But for those of you don’t mind actually interacting with other human beings in a civil fashion and carrying on a constructive debate, head along to Cape May Convention Hall on Monday, April 16, between 7-9pm. The city is holding what it’s calling a Cape May Master Plan Re-examination Open House. This is government at its most transparent, and it’s what was promised by Mayor Chuck Lear when he ran for election in 2016.

The city wants to hear from residents (and, yes, that does include second-home owners) and business owners in order to develop a plan that will “provide for sustainable growth, recognize fiscal constraints, housing needs and protectin of natural, historical and community resources.” I hope a good cross-section of folks turns up, and not just the naysayers who are ONLY interested in how this affects their taxes without caring a bit about the city’s infrastructure. I well remember the open meetings that were held to discuss the new convention hall, a process that I firmly believe compromised the building, turning it into more of a liability than an asset. Yes, sometimes, I think too much public input can dilute the process. But I salute the city for making this such an open process. You’ve got a couple weeks to figure out what you think Cape May should (or even shouldn’t) be doing and how we can all make this an even better place to live... and visit. In the meantime, happy Easter!

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Steve Mitchum from The Mad Batter is up. How long have you been bartending? Two and a half years. Favorite drink to make? The BEST old fashioned and a scratch margarita. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer is visibly eager to order, but when you ask them what they want, they have no clue. Biggest tip you ever received? $90. From a customer who had only ordered a clam chowder and an iced tea.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Ocean View restaurant on Beach Avenue. It’s the island’s classic American diner. The server: Renee. She had cool nails that were painted with polish #120. Jack thought they looked coral in color. Renee said it’s more of an “orangey-peach.” Now you know. The run-ins: We saw retired fire chief Jerry Inderweis Jr, though we couldn’t see what he was eating. We also chatted with Larry and Jonathan Hirsch of The Montreal Beach Resort. Larry had just returned from Florida, sans a beard. Jack told him he looked good. Larry confirmed elderly widows were, indeed, pinching his butt in the Sunshine State. The music: We heard both Christina Aguilera’s “What a Girl Wants” (food, mostly) and Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes.” Little known fact: Betty Davis may have suffered from Graves’ disease, which makes for larger-and-more-glistening eyes than typical. The food: For the table, tater tots. (Enter a 15-minute conversation about the perfect ratio of tot crust to fluffy potato filling. Keep the debate civil, folks.) Then Kate had a cup of chicken noodle soup because “there’s just something about chicken noodle at a diner... you can’t go wrong,” as well as a Monterey chicken panini with the largest side of ranch dressing you’ve ever seen. Jack opted for the mahi mahi fish tacos. Mike ordered a cheesesteak with fried onions and mushrooms. (He tried to order sharp cheddar with this steak because “he wanted to sound cool,” Jack said. Would he have gone for cheese wiz had that been an option? Of course, because if cheez whiz is ever an option, you take it, dammit.) The slip-up: Mike accidentally referred to the Athenian salad on the menu as the Atheist Salad. Does this mean it comes with disbeLEAFS? Badum-ching! The conversation: As of this morning, Coca-Cola had signed on as an Exit Zero Filling Station distributor. Commence jokes about us finding a new Coke dealer. Commence Katie saying, “You’d better not write that!”

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Charlotte Thogersen and Karen Fromhold who are both in jewelry sales on their way to work. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Jesus. Hey, it IS Easter. The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you know the Easter Bunny was an April Fool? And invented in Cape May? It came about when our Rabbit-Hair Clothes Initiative came to a premature end. We’d thought the time was right to farm rabbits for their fur, with a view to selling high-fashion clothes. I think perhaps I had watched that classic movie Barbarella and thought what a vision Jane Fonda was, in what I presumed was rabbit fur, but was in retrospect likely mink. We purchased a score of pairs of those strange white rabbits with the pink eyes, and settled on an acre of land with high fences and little moats. We built the rabbits little Swiss chalet houses and gave them all names. To tell them apart, we outfitted them in tiny hats and waistcoats. At least one of them, Alphonse, was partial to a bowtie. In typical Cape May fashion, we overdid it. We gave them too much independence. Before we knew it there were street names and even tiny battery-powered rabbit automobiles. The latter we had to regulate to three miles per hour after a pair of enterprising

rabbits, fresh from watching Thelma and Louise at the miniature rabbit cinema we built, burst through the main gates in their convertible and fled the city. I think they set up home in Wildwood, where they went unnoticed and eventually ran for office. But by the time we had a thriving population, and had to seriously consider the whole process of making fur, we thought of the rabbits as little people, and no one was up for the actual kidnapping and murder of the creatures. I believe that one night Ernie

Hemingway got very drunk in order to try and actually take the life of a rabbit, and stumbled to the fence with his gun. Unfortunately, the idiot had taken his elephant gun. Once the smoke had cleared, there was no sign of a dead rabbit, just a crater. Ernie vowed never to shoot a living thing again, and we had to spend a small fortune on counseling for the rabbit witnesses. We did try to make the plan work — we opened a tiny rabbit barbershop and trimmed their hair, taking care to sweep up the tiny white offcuts. After a month, we had enough to hand weave a beautiful white fur cape, which sold to the Aga Khan for $100,000. But then the fashion in rabbit coiffures shifted to long, and none of them wanted a haircut, and so we never made another. All that was left was to work out some alternative industries for the unemployed rabbits: we tasked them with egg deliveries, and in time that became chocolate eggs, and for a while, Faberge Eggs to the rich and famous. The whole plan did come together on April Fool’s, too, if you can believe that.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, April Fool’s Day

S

pring makes people playful. Cultures across history and around the world have marked the season with festivals celebrating the lighter side of life — consider Hilaria, Holi and Purim. In modern America, it’s April Fool’s Day, a fun-loving salute to silliness. We imported the tradition from Europe, where it likely began in the Netherlands in the 16th century, after Pope Gregory XIII changed the calendar to start the year in January. People who continued to celebrate in spring were “fools.” The custom evolved, with varying rules, across the continent — fools were tagged with an “April fish” in France and Italy, dusted with flour in Portugal and sent on endless errands in the British Isles — but only until noon, or the joke backfired. Americans embrace all of these, and more. We put dry ice in a urinal, short sheet a roommate’s bed, or tell tall tales about a celebrity. Generally, we partake in harmless activities that get an eye roll more than a guffaw, for fun’s sake. There are some naysayers who frown on

silliness, especially when April 1 coincides with Easter Sunday. Because I firmly believe God has a sense of humor — have you seen a platypus? — I think there’s time for fun, even on the holiest day of the Christian calendar. You’ll still have time for traditional Easter events. Join the Easter Sunday Sunrise Service at the Cove, from 6:30 to 8:00am. Show off your Easter outfit at the Easter Fashion Stroll at Rotary Park at 1pm. Registration for this free event begins at noon, and prizes — treats, gift certificates, and ribbons — will

be given in a number of categories, including best Easter bonnet. The rain location is the Our Lady Star of the Sea parish hall. After the stroll, visit the merchants on the mall. Stop in to Just for Laughs and buy a funny dishtowel to make you giggle as you wash up. Pick up a whoopee cushion at the Toy Shop. Find a silly puppet at the Zoo Company, or go upstairs for a book of riddles at Cape Atlantic Books. Make time for roller skating, which is always good for a few laughs. Convention Hall has skating on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Admission is $5 plus skate rental — $2 for regular skates, $4 for inline. Admission for non-skaters is $2. Take a tiny person to play skee ball at the arcade. Back at home, “forget” to put out any eggs for the egg hunt. Or, color a couple of raw eggs and put them out with the boiled ones. Serve green jelly beans instead of peas with dinner. Take the kids to the zoo — I doubt there’s a platypus, but surely some creature there will convince you that god has a sense of humor. The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter is 12 years old and starting to get interested in boys, god help me. I am tempted to keep an eye on her electronics, naturally without her knowledge — iPad, smart phone, all social media accounts and maybe even her diary. Do you think I’m overreacting? And let me say — I have no reason not to trust her, but I fear the menace that is out there preying on those who are trusting. — Paranoid Dad Dear Dad First off, what a lucky girl she is to have all those electronics at her disposal. Secondly, your paranoia is justified. The Answer Lady would stop short, though, at reading her diary unless the circumstances call for it, which these do not. You do not necessarily need do all this monitoring without her knowledge.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

She should know you are a hands-on parent. You might also think of deplugging one day a week — all of you. Game night is a great family activity. The Nature Center of Cape May always runs a terrific program on the weekends. And the city offers roller skating on Friday nights. The more you engage with your children, the more probability they will make responsible decisions. Dear Answer Lady My first cousin works for a big advertising firm in New York, and I suddenly

find myself looking for a job in marketing. I haven’t seen my cousin since we were kids but he is still my cousin and I feel it is appropriate to call him and ask him if he can point me in the right direction. However, my girlfriend says it is inappropriate since we haven’t spoken in like 15 years. I still maintain that family is family. What say you, Answer Lady? — Hobnobbing King Dear Hobnob Keeping in mind that there is a fine line between networking and using people for personal gain, The Answer Lady’s first suggestion is to perhaps pay a visit to your aunt and uncle and ask them about calling your cousin out of the blue. First, stop by The Original Fudge Kitchen and pick up a pound of fudge or personalized Easter eggs so you don’t appear hat-in-hand AND empty-handed. You might also consider simultaneously using your own skill set to market yourself. One would think that getting a job on your own would be far more satisfying than having your cousin go to bat for you, if that is your intent.

Bird Droppings

P

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

eople from far, far away flock to Cape May Bird Observatory’s annual Optics Sale, which is happening all day on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15. As Cape May residents you are at a distinct advantage to lay claim to the best deals on binoculars and spotting scopes. Whether your interest is stargazing, hunting, boating or butterfly watching, there is an instrument for you. But first, some advice. Don’t fill your head with all kinds of formulas and jargon. There is only one test of a binocular. You bring them to your eyes, you see things quickly and easily. That’s it. Forget arcane references to things like “twilight factor” and “lightwave shift.” At CMBO, you’ll find knowledgeable sales people whose job is to fit you with the tool that makes the natural world come alive. To us, optics are a means, not an end Buying binoculars is something that should not be rushed. That said, the first day of the sale is a madhouse. But if you wait until Sun-

day, the real bargains may be gone. My advice is to visit the store at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point before the sale and test drive a number of instruments before the sale which will be held at the Center for Research and Education, 600 Rt 47 North — 1.7 miles north of Goshen. Things to check for include “close focus... depth of field... ease of focus... and parallax.” Yes, I know “parallax” sounds jargony but it is an important concern with closefocusing binoculars. Many binoculars that

focus closer than 10 feet suffer image separation beginning at 30 feet. This means that your eyes strain to draw the paired images together. Eye fatigue is the result. If you feel a tug or strain on your eyes when looking at flowers or pollinating insect, your binocular has a parallax problem — one that can only be fixed by buying a more forgiving instrument. By the way, studying flowers with binoculars is like stepping into a Georgia O’Keeffe painting. So, you local residents, take advantage of your proximity. Come a few days early, scout out the glass you like then, come April 14, scoop up your bargain. The sale prices are offered to everyone, no membership required. If you wait until Sunday, you won’t face a line and you’ll find sales people who can take time with you and make certain you and your binocular are a perfect match. And, sure, you can come before the sale and buy a great glass at a great price but not the sale price. Our optics dealers are strict abou0t that and the sales price is as low as they go.

The Movie Column

L

By Stefan Prosky, Curator of Cape May Film Festival

ast week, we discussed the short films we’re featuring at the 18th Annual Cape May Film Festival. Now let’s spend some time on the feature films. Friday night, we start off with Chasing Coral. With Cape May being so reliant on our natural resources (the harbor, wetlands, ocean), this is an especially important film for our town and inhabitants (that’s people AND wildlife). Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate and the public has no idea of the scale or implication of the catastrophe silently raging underwater. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. Also, we’re screening a a short film from Sarah Werner, one of our film camp instructors, The Things They Left Behind, inspired by a Stephen King short story. Our Saturday Night Feature is a screening of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The best part of coming to any film festival, and we set the standard at ours, is meeting the

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, April 7 people behind the films. And this night is no different. Joel is stunned to discover that his girlfriend, Clementine, has had their tumultuous relationship erased from her mind. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process to get the same treatment. But as his memories of Clementine begin to fade, Joel suddenly realizes how much he still loves her. After the film, there will be a Q&A with producer Anthony Bregman, moderated by myself and actor Wil Keenan. On Sunday morning, we have one feature film we think you will enjoy. It has New

Jersey written all over it! Pizza Shop: An Italian American Dream introduces us to Charlie and Fred Osso, brothers from Calabria, Italy, who have run a successful pizzeria in northern New Jersey for 40 years. Emigrating from impoverished post-war Italy, they had little chance for advancement, but through hard work and resilience, they’ve thrived. Now in their seventies, they’re facing construction of a new restaurant and encroaching old age. But retirement is a dirty word to these workhorses: Charlie is serious and detail-oriented, with a short fuse and a soft center, while Fred is lighthearted and easygoing, a passionate chef and bon vivant. This film explores how a mom-and-pop shop can be a hub for a community, the sacrifices parents make for their children, and what it means for immigrants when they live out the American dream. It’s a great lineup, folks. We hope you can come out April 6-8 at West Cape May Borough Hall. Enjoy these films with your neighbors and loved ones. Indeed, that’s the best way!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

MISSY came to the shelter after living with her family for eight years because her owner became ill. She is house trained and has excellent canine manners. She enjoys playing with her toys and running in the yard, but is also quite content to simply take a leisurely walk. She seeks attention and affection from people in the home. Adopt today!

QUINCY is three years old and the favorite among all volunteers and staff at the shelter. He arrived in February 2016 as a stray. He was thin, scared, and he did not have good manners. Quincey has learned to politely greet people and walk nicely on his leash. He loves to run in the yard and play fetch. He will be the most loyal companion. Adopt!

SHEBA is a mannerly, playful girl who loves people and enjoys a good game of fetch in the yard with a tennis ball. She loves to take long walks and has good leash manners. Sheba is also crate trained which makes the transition to a new home an easier process. Previously she lived with children. Stop by the shelter and give sweet Sheba a forever home!

The best read of the year! It starts with a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast of Cape May and develops into a story that will keep you turning the pages... Available from Whale’s Tale and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or you can buy a copy at the Exit Zero online store. Visit ezstore.us/books.
